Gaby Copper Mining?s Gabriela Mistral property is located in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile, at an altitude of 2,660 m (8,727 ft) above sea level. The reserve contains an estimated 562 Mt (620 million st) of oxide ore with an average grade of 0.41 percent total copper. The mine went into production in 2008. Gaby Copper faced the problem of having no reliable way to measure the solids level. This is a challenge that exists throughout the mining industry, where dust in the air and accumulation of solids on a sensor make accurate measurements difficult in areas such as transfer chutes, the rock box underneath crushers, silos and anywhere else that information is needed on the level of solids. The next-generation technology in the Sitrans LR560 radar from Siemens addresses this challenge. With a frequency of 78 GHz ? higher than previous generations of radar ? it provides a more robust signal for measuring in areas where there are high levels of dust accumulation. The Sitrans LR560 provides a signal beam angle of four degrees, significantly narrower than any other product on the market can offer.

The Payback Period (PBP) is one of the most widely applied project evaluation criteria 'in the mineral industry. As much as this criterion is liked by practitioners, it is also criticized by academicians who seriously question its validity. Inspired by this criticism, the author of this paper examines the classical definition of the PBP criterion, and formulates a new one designed for both investment and borrowing projects. It is demonstrated that the PBP, in its revised version, is free from all the shortcommings of the old one, and is fully compatible with the Net Present Value (NPV) criterion, as well as with all the other NPV compatible project evaluation criteria. Since the traditional approach to the comparison of mutually exclusive projects (MEP1s) by means of the PBP criterion has been incorrect, the paper also outlines the correct approach to this problem. Finally, owing to the fact that the PBP depends on the assumed interest rate, and using a specially developed computer program, the PBP is graphically presented, in six numerical examples, as a function of the interest rate.

This paper presents an analysis of gold production and prices over an extended period. Production patterns are provided for the world as a whole and for the five major producing countries. Gold prices as a function of interest rates, as measured by municipal bond rates, are given for the period 1947 to the present. World gold production has had a phenomenal increase since 1980, with the exception of South Africa, all major producing nations participated in this increase, even though the price of gold generally has been decreasing since the high level attained in 1980.

Introduction In response to industry needs and requests, Joy Mining Machinery is aggressively evolving a "game changing" system of underground development mining machinery. This entry-development system (EDS) project is concentrated on providing clean, protected and ergonomic operator areas and a quantum leap in productivity. To meet these goals, a virtually continuous and automated mining system is needed. Operators must be able to efficiently and ergonomically perform required functions from a protected environment. Health-related issues, such as respirable dust and noise, must also be addressed. A new concept system of integrated face equipment, from the continuous miner to and including advancing the section belt and services, is needed. Phase I of the project was aimed at developing the bolting technology required. Through acquisition of Cram Australia and joint development efforts with Canyon Fuel Co., Joy now has this capability. The test platform, known as the Joy Multibolter, has successfully completed its trials at Canyon Fuel's SUFCo Mine (Fig. 1). These tests validated the bolting technology and operator protection and ergonomic issues. Phase II includes the development and testing of an integrated mining machine (IMM) capable of advancing a heading 1.5 m (5 ft) while simultaneously cutting a fullface width (single pass) and installing a complete bolt pattern. The IMM, unveiled at MINExpo 2000, incorporates the bolting technology of the Multibolter with automated full-face cutting. This machine was designed to meet Joy's stringent health, operator protection and 300m/d (1,000-ft/d) productivity goals. Phases III through V will include development of processes and integrated haulage, ventilation, power, material handling and section services advancing equipment. Processes and equipment developed will be designed for seamless integration into a complete entry development system. The focus of this paper is the new continuous miner (IMM) development, proposed testing and expectations for the EDS. The IMM is scheduled for commissioning and trials beginning in April 2001 at the SUFCo Mine. SUFCo Mine Canyon Fuel Co. is jointly owned by Arch Western Resources and the Itochu Corp. of Japan. It owns and operates three coal mines in Utah: the SUFCo Mine in Sevier County, the Skyline Mine in Carbon and Emery Counties and the Dougout Canyon Mine in Carbon County. Incorporating state-of-the-art-mining technology and advanced mine management practices, the SUFCo Mine is one of the most efficient underground coal mines in the world. The SUFCo Mine is located approximately 50-km (30 miles) northeast of Salina, UT, in the Wasatch Plateau portion of the Uinta coal basin. The mine property consists of 9,900 hm2 (24,470 acres) with approximately 118 Mt (130 million st) of recoverable reserves. Public utilities and industrial concerns purchase approximately 95% of the coal mined at SUFCo through short- or long-term contracts. Coal reserves are extracted by longwall mining, and the panels are developed using continuous miners. The longwall face at SUFCo Mine is 283-m (930-ft) wide, and the seam height ranges from 2.4 to 4 m (8 to 13 ft). The two development sections are in full operation using Joy 12CM12 continuous miners. Two super longwall panels, under development in the northeast portion of the lease block, are 4,270-m (14,000-ft) long with a 283-m (930-ft) wide longwall face. Mine tailings, the byproduct of mining and mineral processing, are increasingly mass-produced as a result of increased demand for metals and minerals as well as the advancement in technology that allows for the exploitation of lower-grade ores. Lower grades can increase the volume of tailings that may contain new gangue minerals that should be evaluated for the presence of critical minerals and other valuable metals. The practice of reprocessing, while relatively new, is crucial to reducing environmental damages, obtaining valuable critical minerals from waste, and contributing to more sustainable repurposing and disposal methods. With the increase in tailings dam failures in recent years, there is a large motivating factor in remining and removing the potential hazard to benefit the safety of potentially impacted communities. In analyzing the perspectives of various domestic and international studies, this literature review will determine the feasibility of reprocessing and reutilizing mine tailings waste for a more sustainable future while exploring current practices that have benefitted ecosystems and communities.

"Construction activities account for a large share of the global Greenhouse Gas emission. In the past 10 years, project decision-makers and researchers have been paying more attention to the carbon emission of tunnel projects. In this paper we study the carbon emission calculation in shield tunneling. The objective of this paper is to: (1) analyze the complex variables which affect the total emission of shield tunneling; (2) develop and illustrate a new data-mining-based method to estimate the carbon emission in the construction phase; (3) assess the emission prediction reliability of a data-mining-based method—the Randomforst model, with R programming language. This study is based on a large-diameter shield tunnel built in Shanghai, China, and shows that a reliable predictive performance can be achieved with this new data-mining-based method. INTRODUCTION Climate change caused by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission has been a hot topic in recent 20 years. Both governments and non-government-organizations are trying its best to control the climate change. Since the 1990s, the general consensus is that carbon emission reduction and carbon sinking (the work of capturing the emitted carbon) are two ways of mitigating the global warming effect, with the former being more exercisable. The challenge posed by global warming also motivates the project decision-makers to take measures to reduce the GHG emission. The 5th Assessment & Report on Climate Change (published by IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) suggests that building industry contributes to 5% of the total direct emission. The building industry has shown more awareness of the impact of GHG emissions with construction activities. Shield tunnels act as an important component of the infrastructure system, and have been the dominant way of utilizing the underground space, as well as a competitive alternative to passageway underneath rivers. To study the environmental effects of shield tunneling, there is a need to quantify the carbon emission of shield tunnel construction."

This paper discusses the effect of grinding media composition, mineral type and slurry environment on the wear rate of various grinding media (balls). Sufficient wear data have been obtained and correlated with the modes of wear determined from examination of the ball surfaces using scanning electron microscopy. Five modes of wear have been identified to be operative under certain slurry conditions for the various ball compositions studied.

The Fabian ore body near Malmberget, Sweden, has an ore reserve of 5 Mt of predominately low grade iron ore, containing 40-55% Fe. Mining began in 1971 with a new method called slot block caving. About 2 Mt were mined, but poor fragmentation resulted in too much secondary blasting. This decreased mucking efficiency to such an extent that the method was abandoned after only 40% of the ore volume had been mined. At this stage a large stope (180 x 30 x 100 m) had been excavated. Although the exposed area was quite large, no caving action occurred in the hanging wall or in the ceiling. LKAB decided in 1977 to introduce sublevel stoping using 105-mm-diam holes. This was the first time large diameter holes were used underground in Sweden. The method had been evaluated in collaboration with the University of Luleå (LuH), the Swedish Detonic Research Foundation (SveDeFo), and the Swedish Mining Research Foundation.

Water is the mainstay for the beneficiation of fine-size coal and minerals, but it is also the least desirable constituent of the final product. The basic concept of the novel process described in this paper is based on the differential surface heat absorption capacity of the individual particles. When a differentially heated solid mixture is placed on a moving belt that has been coated with low-temperature melting resin, the hotter component of the mixture will stick to the belt while the relatively cooler component will stay free on the belt and fall off at the end of the belt run. Experiments were conducted with pyrite, coal and quartz particles of 6 × 18 mesh size. The goal of the test program was to find the optimum conditions at which there exists a required temperature difference between minerals and coal particles by controlling the operating and system variables. Preliminary test results show that there is a potential for separating mineral matter from coal using the thermo-adhesive separation technique.

he power generation industry may be required to reduce carbon dioxide (C02) emissions if regulations related to global climate change are enacted. Coal-fired generation emits more than 80% of the power sector CO2 and would be a likely target for CO2 reductions. Compliance with the Kyoto Protocol will require a 33% reduction from the projected year 2012 emission level, even with moderate load growth. This article describes an analysis of power industry CO2 reduction options and their costs. It assesses how a generator would make compliance decisions under a mandatory CO2 emissions reduction program. Carbon sequestration, fuel switching and new plant construction are considered. The Global Climate Change Treaty signed at the Rio de Janiero Earth Summit in June 1992 set the long-term goal of stabilizing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. The December 1997 Kyoto Protocol established short-term mandatory targets for the United States and 37 other developed countries. The United States' target is a 7% decrease by 2012 from the 1990 "greenhouse gas" level. Developing countries are exempted from reductions, according to the Kyoto Protocol, despite projections that indicate a significant increase in their emission levels. The Kyoto Protocol must be ratified by the US Senate. US power industry carbon emissions were 490 Mt (540 million st) in 1990 and are projected to be 680 Mt (749 million st) in 2012, according to the US Energy Information Administration. Coal-fired generation emits more than 80% of the power sector CO2. Mine workers using diesel-powered equipment experience the highest occupational exposure to diesel particulate matter (DPM). This problem could be aggravated in underground stone mines due to their unique ventilation challenges with the large openings for airflow. Hence, adequate ventilation in these mines requires a combination of effective ventilation planning and delivering needed air quantities using auxiliary fans and stoppings. To meet this challenge, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Air Quantity Estimator (AQE) software as a mine planning tool to help underground mine operators estimate the air requirements necessary to dilute DPM in the main air stream to statutory levels. The major parameters required for the calculations are the engine’s horsepower, DPM emission rate, the percentage operating time, catalytic converter efficiency, and filter efficiency. In efforts to provide major updates to this software, this study describes the recent development of a revised version of the Air Quantity Estimator (AQE 2.0). With the revised version, users have access to a comprehensive database of over 40,000 pieces of equipment, can define their specific target DPM level, and can create specific equipment for a customized database, in addition to having an improved easy-to-use interface. The software output provides an estimated total airflow necessary to dilute DPM based on the projected emissions, and the user can generate a related results report. The results also provide the mine personnel with a tool to identify vehicles that are high DPM contributors and could further be used to optimize the ventilation requirement by making changes to the percentage operating time of the engine. This software provides the mine with a user-friendly tool that could help reduce the DPM exposure of workers.

Increased technical and legislative analysis by all parties of interest could result in more efficientand better directed regulatory legislation in the mining industry. Efforts to forestall or frustrate legislation through massive lobbying and public relations efforts are seldom effective over time and often lead to more stringent and far reaching legislation than necessary. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 is perhaps an outstanding example of such insufficiences; a future example may well be regulatory surface mine legislation. Although a lack of extensive hard data seldom enables rapid or sophisticated analysis early in the legislative process, even preliminary analysis may be sufficient. Simple statistical analyses of available data, assessment of the legislative rationale, and subjective appraisal of other non-quantifiable constraints to improved mine safety. An average of 115 underground fatalities at an exposure frequency rate of 0.67 can be reasonably expected in the immediate future, under existing levels of technology, degree of regulation, and economic conditions. If gross unrefined estimates of 6 preparation plant, 5 surface, and 30 strip mining fatalities are assumed, the total fatality industry level could be expected to approximate 156 Serious professional, economic, and technical constraints within the the industry probably preclude any major decrease of these accident levels within the near future

Bureau of Mines research in in situ uranium leaching includes injection well construction and environmental aspects. Clogging of injection wells is a common problem, and is affected by construction techniques. Part of the clogging can be caused by a low-permeability skin left on the borehole wall if the drilling fluids are not thoroughly flushed out. Certain polymer drilling fluids are less prone to cause clogging than bentonite muds, since a lower solids content can be used. The environmental research primarily involves two contracts. The first describes the environmental impact of in situ leaching and the effect of environmental legislation on leaching; the second describes the cost effectiveness of various methods of restoring ground water quality.

The Smoky Canyon Mine has recently installed a PROMPTED GAMMA NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS (PGNAA) on-line analyzer as part of a long-term advanced process control program. The on-line analyzer was adapted from a continuous dry analyzer and a large on-stream wet analyzer to a compact, multiplexed 3" slurry analyzer. The analyzation feed system utilizes a multiplexer system to accommodate up to fourteen (14) different plant process streams. The corresponding sampling system also provides for dewatering of sample streams too dilute for timely analysis. Key analysis includes, but is not limited to, phosphorus, aluminum, magnesium, calcium, and potassium. This data currently allows plant operations to be manually evaluated and controlled. Future development of a plant-wide supervisory control system will utilize the data for plant operations. This paper discusses the design, installation, and operation of the PGNAA on-line analyzer at the Smoky Canyon Mine.

Mining has been recognized among the most hazardous industries in the United States, despite the significant reduction in injury and fatality rates over the past century. This study focuses on the ground-fall incidents classified in the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) database as “fall of roof, back, or brow from in-place” and “fall of face, rib, pillar, side, or highwall.” The main objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive statistical analysis of the reported ground-fall incidents from 2010 through 2019 including both coal and metal/non-metal mines. Since most of the ground-fall injuries and fatalities occurred in underground coal mines and were attributed to falls of roof and rib, an additional analysis was directed to evaluate roof- and rib-fall incident trends in underground coal mines associated with the mining method, coal-seam thickness, mine size, and the seasonal effects.

Federal regulations require refuge alternatives in underground coal mines to sustain life for 96 h while maintaining an apparent temperature below 35 °C (95 °F). Research by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown that heat and humidity buildup is a major concern with refuge alternatives because they have limited ability to dissipate heat, and high internal air temperature and relative humidity (RH) may expose occupants to heat stress. The heat transfer process within and surrounding a refuge alternative is complex and not easily defined, analytically or experimentally. To investigate heat and humidity buildup in refuge alternatives, NIOSH conducted multiple in-mine, 96-h tests on a 10-person tent-type refuge alternative, a 23-person tent-type refuge alternative and a six-person metal-type refuge alternative. The results show that when moisture was introduced to represent perspiration and respiration from miners (wet tests), the average temperature at midheight increased by 10.5 °C (18.9 °F) and the RH approached 88 percent for the 10-person tent-type refuge alternative; the average temperature at midheight increased by 9.4 °C (16.9 °F) and the RH approached 94 percent for the 23-person tent-type refuge alternative; and the average temperature at midheight increased by 7.7 °C (13.9 °F) and the RH approached 95 percent for the sixperson metal-type refuge alternative. For the dry tests, where no moisture was introduced, the average internal temperature increased by 12.6 °C (22.7 °F) for the 10-person tent-type refuge alternative, by 10.3 °C (18.5 °F) for the 23-person tent-type refuge alternative and by 8.4 °C (15.1 °F) for the six-person metal-type refuge alternative. These results may provide refuge alternative manufacturers and mine operators with guidelines and considerations for evaluating temperature profiles for portable refuge alternatives. The information may then be used to make decisions on occupancy ratings and heat mitigation strategies based on the thermal environment in which the refuge alternatives will be installed.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has entered into a $l.5 million Cooperative Agreement with Alpine Equipment Corporation/Astro International Corporation ("Alpine") of State College, Pennsylvania, for the evaluation of water-jet-assisted (WJA) mechanical cutting of oil shale under actual mining conditions. A commercial-sized, heavy WJA mechanical miner is being assembled based upon the successful "factory testing" of a smaller prototype miner utilizing standard tungsten-carbide and Polycrystalline Diamond Composite (POC) bits in large oil shale boulders. Actual field testing of the machine will be conducted in an oil shale mine located in the Piceance Basin of Western Colorado. In-mine logistical support is being provided by several oil shale companies through the Colorado Mining Association (CMA) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM).

The investigation and uptake of filtered tailings continues to grow around the world, but cost and scalability are deterrents for mining companies. Filtration technology that is currently in use is unable to meet the needs of many operations and projects that would otherwise adopt filtered tailings. For tailings to reach the desired moisture content for dry stacking, the majority of processes require pressure filtration, with significant upfront and ongoing maintenance costs. Given the comparative lower costs associated with low-pressure Viper vacuum belt filtration, this technology has the potential to alleviate dependency on high-pressure applications and make efficient dewatering and handling of tailings a more economic and sustainable solution.

The highly competitive nature of the international iron ore market has forced producers to improve the quality of their pellets. The demand for low acid pellets suitable for direct reduction has resulted in an increase in the number of plants utilizing reverse froth flotation for silica reduction. Column flotation is being favoured for this service due to the low capital and operating cost of the equipment, as well as improved metallurgical performance when compared to conventional flotation cells. This paper describes the benefits of column flotation and discusses some important aspects of circuit design.

This paper is intended to provide information for one to be able to determine the slurry system head curve for pump applications. The slurry characteristics are the basis for what the size, material of construction, and critical carrying velocity of the pipe will be. The system head curve is adjusted by use of the pipe friction coefficient factor and slurry derate factors. An example using multi-staging of slurry pump curves is presented to compare the wear life relationship of pump parts for a tailing pipeline system head curve.
