The South African base metals industry has been one mainly focused on the production of metals or metal compounds from primary ores. This is true for metals such as titanium, vanadium, chrome, manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and aluminium. The steel making industry has traditionally used a substantial portion of scrap steel, and could thus be considered to be somewhat of an exception. Secondary sources have played much less of a role, possibly due to at least some of the following factors. Scrap material is often of unknown composition, and thus it requires additional chemical analysis, and possibly special treatment. Tonnages are relatively small, and the incorporation of secondary materials is possibly seen to carry undue risk and inadequate benefit. South African consumers are still not very conservation and recycling conscious, which limits the amount of scrap made available. This attitude might also be expected to influence decision makers in these industries. Finally, pressure from environmentally motivated activists locally has not been unduly large. This landscape has been changing, and is continuing to do so. Various municipal authorities such as those of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town are reporting increasingly limited landspace for waste (Bondolfi, 2007). There are increasing concerns regarding the leaching of hazardous metals such as chromium, mercury and cadmium from landfill waste, especially electronic and electric wastes ? the so-called eWastes. In more developed countries such as the United States of America and Western Europe the problem of eWaste has grown to the extent where legislation has been enacted, such as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation of the EU (European Union Directive 2002/96/EC). The 19th and 20th centuries have seen major technological advances. Relevant to this paper is the availability of centrally generated electrical power, telecommunication, entertainment through recorded and transmitted music and images, the growth and pervasive influence of electronics, and the handling of digital data by computers and microprocessors. These developments have placed ever increasing demands on resources for the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, as well as on the generation of electrical power. Most of the resources required are non-renewable: copper, steel, aluminium and other metals, various thermoplastic polymers such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride), polyethylene and ABS ( acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene), thermosetting polymers such as epoxies, elastomers such as butyl rubber, glasses and ceramics, and composites such as fibre reinforced plastic (fibreglass). The conservation of non-renewable resources inevitably includes recycling. To a certain extent, recycling of materials locally is well established. The Witwatersrand Basin contains by far the most gold ever found, and has hosted mining from its discovery in 1886 to the present. For many years, South Africa was the world’s largest producerof gold, nearly all of which came from the Witwatersrand. Since 2000, South Africa has fallen back several positions because of declining gold output. There are many complex and varied reasons for this; however, declining gold resources in the Witwatersrand Basin are not one of them. As far as the author knows, there are no qualified estimates in the literature of gold remaining in the Witwatersrand Basin. This paper collects mining data from several sources and then, using elementary gold accounting and error analysis, attempts to estimate the amount of gold remaining in the Witwatersrand Basin. It includes gold underground in existing and defunct mines, in evaluated ore resources, and dumps. Compiled data from 1887 to 2019 shows that 50 200 t of gold were produced by Witwatersrand mines, while it is estimated that a further 48 100 t remainunderground, both within and outside of mine leases, a further 1 600 t on the surface in tailings,and an unknown amount in rock dumps. Nearly all of this gold will remain inaccessible with current mining methods, and major technical developments in mining will be necessary before any of the gold can be categorized as a code-compliant resource or reserve. To win this prize, the mining industry will have to rethink its approach to mining, both in old mining leases and in the unexploited ground. It will also have to find effective means of preventing gold theft and informal mining, which are on the rise.

The processing of heavy mineral concentrates can be enhanced by the use of power ultrasound to clean their surfaces of oxidation products and fine coatings, mainly through the large, but very localized forces, produced by cavitation. Results are presented of the application of power ultrasound to remove coatings from the surfaces of mineral sand concentrates in order to improve the sharpness of their high-tension separation and, in some cases, the quality of the low iron components such as zircon. Improvements of 10–15% in recovery and up to 20% in grade compared to unsonicated material were achieved in a single stage laboratory high-tension separation. Cavitation also ensures that a fresh, clean surface is presented to leachants during the leaching of suspended solids. At the same time, the effect of cavitation and the shearing effect of the sound wave passing over the solids ensure that the saturated boundary layer is kept to a minimum if not completely removed. This application of power ultrasound helps to speed up leaching processes as applied to the removal of excess alumino-silicate contaminants in some ilmenite. In an underground mine the ingress of heat can generally be attributed to two sources (Rock exposure and artificial mechanisms). The heat load relating rock exposure is subdivided into stoping [~40%] and haulages [~20%]. Rock is exposed to the ambient air and as a mine increases in depth the VRT (Virgin Rock Temperature) increases which leads to more heat ingress underground. To counter the heat ingress, especially in low-seam stoping areas of a deep level mine, air is, a) cooled artificially, b) the amount of rock exposed is reduced in the back areas of a stope by backfill applications, and c) ventilation air is used more efficiently. The heat reduction within a stope due to placed backfill could amount to ~50% for operations mining at a mean rock breaking depth of about 4500 mbc (metres below collar). Unfortunately, due to backfill transport methods, the physical fluid properties and application methods adopted, additional heat is induced into the air. The heat ingress due to backfill application could amount to as much as 25% of the overall in-stope heat load. This heat influx, seen as a negative aspect of backfill operations, is nevertheless overshadowed by the overall in-mine heat load reduction capability of about 20% attainable. The in-stope benefit [~50%] attainable from backfill operations could be increased with the incorporation of a heat exchange (cooling) methodology to offset the additional heat ingress into the surrounding air of a deep underground mine.

'Increased underground extraction of coal' was the theme selected for the 1981 mining vacation school, which was held at the University of the Witwatersrand in January and February. The response of the industry to the invitation to register was so good that three separate schools of one week each were arranged between 26th January and 13th February. In terms of the total number of delegates, some 225 actually attending, the school can be described as the most successful ever organized by the Institute.

Product designed characteristics like reliability and maintainability affect maintenance cost, service performance, and therefore product support strategy must be defined during design stage in terms of these two dimensions. Furthermore product support and service delivery strategy has considerable influence on the total life cycle cost and the economic viability of industrial systems/products. he paper presents a concept for the development of service delivery strategy for industrial products with a special reference to mining systems. In this paper we emphasize that the strategy for product support should not be centred only on ‘product’ but it should also take into account the service delivery capability of the manufacturers/suppliers and users service organization, users competence and capability, product use location, logistics and infrastructures, etc., to arrive at the best performance and economic results. Such strategy should invariably include services supporting the client apart from considering services supporting the product. The discussion in the paper is based on the experiences from the manufacturing industry engaged in manufacturing of mining systems and the observed trends in technology and management of operation and maintenance of mining systems. The structural age of the capital mining machinery, representing a part of the system of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia, has been dictated by the initiation and development of open pit coal mines. For example, the oldest bucket wheel excavators were installed some thirty-four years ago, and the average life of the relevant machinery exceeds twenty-two years. Operation of both capital equipment and machinery has direct effects on economic and business activities of open pit mines, and consequently forced us to make a decision and study thoroughly the problem of establishing the optimum exploitation life of capital mining equipment at the open pit coal mines of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia. The aim of this paper is to define and discuss the relative problems as well as to find out the possible solutions and establish the methodology for estimating the optimum exploitation life of machinery. The study was successfully carried out by a team of scientists engaged from and coordinated by the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade. This paper presents the key observations covering the subject problem. Mineral sand beneficiation plants comprise a complex combination of electrostatic, magnetic and gravity based separation techniques. These are combined and replicated in ways that provide the most efficient and cost effective separation of the valuable components. On line instrumentation has been developed at the JKMRC (eg. conductor/non-conductor(CNC) ) to measure the properties of the dry plant process streams. This paper provides results from the recent development of a novel low cost mass flow meter and discusses their combined use with the CNC instrumentation for the control of dry separation circuits.

Abstract: The amount of published literature pertaining to the field of rock mechanics has increased markedly in recent years. Whilst computer applications aid our understanding of the mechanisms of pillar instability, the applications do not take into account the effect of time; thus the determined pillar factor of safety has limited meaning. A more realistic approach would be to consider pillar stability in terms of time to failure. However such an approach would require a reasonable estimate of the in-situ pillar mass strength and a validated methodology linking the time to failure with in-situ pillar mass strength and the geometric layout of the working. Résumé: Le volume de bibliographie au sujet de la mécanique des roches a augmenté considérablement ces derniêres années. Alors que des modeles informatiques aident a la compréhension des mécanismes d'instabilité de pilliers, ces modèles ne prennent pas en compte les effets du temps; ainsi, la determination du coefficient de surete du pillier a un sens limité. Une approche plus réaliste devrait considérer la stabilité du pillier en fonction du temps de défaillance. Cependant une telle approche exigerait une estimation raisonnable de la resistance du massif rocheux du pillier ainsi qu'une méthodologie qui lie le temps de défaillance avec la résistance in-situ du massif rocheux du pillier et la géometrie de l'excavation souterraine. Zusammenfassung: Die Anzahl der Veröffentlichungen auf dem Gebiet der Felsmechanik ist in jüngster Zeit sehr gestiegen. Computerprogramme sind wertvoll um den Mechanismus der Pfeilerunbeständigkeit zu verstehen, aber sie vernachlässigen den Zeiteffekt. Daher haben die errechneten Sicherheitsfaktoren der Pfeiler nur begrenzte Bedeutung. Eine realistischere Bewertung wäre, die Stabilität der Pfeiler auf Grund der Zeit bis zum Verfall zu beurteilen. So ein Verfahren würde eine Schätzung der in-situ Gebirgsfestigkeit und eine validierte Methologie, die die Zeit zum Verfall in Abhängigkeit der in-situ Pfeilerfestigkeit und der geometrischen Auslage der Grube zusammenbringt, brauchen.

The common law requires an employer to take reasonable steps for the safety of employees. In general, the duty of care means that the employer, acting personally or through its employees or agents, must take reasonable care for the safety of its employees (Van Deventer v Workmen?s Compensation Commissioner; 1962 (4) SA 28 T; Oosthuizen v Homegas (Pty) Ltd 1992 (3) SA 463 T).The duty of care includes the provision of safe premises, safe machinery and tools and a safe system of work. The obligation is not an absolute one, but is restricted by the concept of reasonableness. The common law duty may, in certain cases, include the assessment of hazards and risks. 2 International law Great emphasis has been placed in the Western world on the prevention of occupational diseases and injuries. Detailed statutes and regulations govern specific industries in many countries. See, e.g. the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations of the United Kingdom and various regulations applicable to the use of asbestos and lead, fire protection, mines and quarries, petroleum, etc. Risk management is an important part of managing health and safety. In the United Kingdom, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, 1999, require every employer to make a ?suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to health and safety of his employees to which they are exposed whilst they are at work?. The particularity of the assessment is determined by the risk in question.

The stability of slopes is a crucial problem not only in open pit mines, but also in civil engineering situations. The deformational behaviour of slopes is in general monitored during/after the excavation by carrying out field measurements where displacement measurements are commonly adopted. In monitoring the slope stability it should be emphasized that the measurement results must be properly interpreted so as to assess whether the slopes are stable or become unstable in the future. In order to interpret the data, back analysis is extremely useful. In this paper a slope stability monitoring system is described. It consists of displacement measurements by GPS, and a back analysis of measured data. The use of GPS has a great advantage, because of the fact that continuous displacement measurements with high accuracy for a large extent of concerned area can be easily achieved. On the other hand, the back analysis can reveal the mechanical characteristics of the ground, which make it possible to assess the stability of slopes quantitatively.

The Konkola Mine, a subsidiary of the Konkola Copper Mines Plc (KCM) which is owned by the Vedanta group of companies of India and Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Holding limited, is located at Chililabombwe in the northern extension of Zambia's Copperbelt province. In its operations, the mine has been experiencing problems in ascertaining the optimum degree of fineness and the operating density of the hydrocyclone overflow in order to achieve high flotation performance. It was believed that recovery of sulphide copper minerals from Konkola ore is a function of the fineness of the grind so that it might be an economical justification to modify the grinding plant in order to run at lower cyclone overflow densities than the case is now. In an effort to improve these operations, it was decided to carry out test work on various hydrocyclones of sizes 0.381 m, 0.4575 m and on 0.508 m. The later was found to give satisfactory results and was installed on the plant. Despite giving satisfactory results there was need to investigate further to establish the working densities and size. Increasing the density of cyclone overflow decreases the per cent passing 75 pm at least in the range 1080-1 150 g/l. Furthermore, hydrocyclones give better separation at low densities of feed and hence the efficiency is high at low feed densities. Circulating load increases with an increase in feed densities and an decrease in the grind. The flotation performance in both sulphide and oxide copper minerals rougher stages is enhanced with an increase in the degree of fineness of the grind, with an optimum being obtained at a density of 1 150 g/l and 81.4% passing 75 µm. Tati Nickel is currently operating a hydrometallurgical demonstration plant in Botswana, using the Activox® process developed by LionOre Technology, to produce nickel cathode and a cobalt salt from a sulphide concentrate. Cobalt is extracted using Cyanex 272. This reagent also extracts all the iron, aluminium, copper, zinc, and manganese from the nickel stream. Versatic 10 carboxylic acid is then used as extractant to recover nickel from the stream, separating it from calcium and magnesium, and upgrading it to provide a suitable advance electrolyte for nickel electrowinning. However, the selectivity of Versatic 10 for nickel over calcium is limited, and gypsum formation in the extraction circuit is a problem when it is attempted to maximise the recovery of nickel. Mintek has developed a synergistic system with Versatic 10 for improved separation of nickel from calcium and magnesium. Laboratory test work was conducted on the raffinate of the cobalt solvent extraction circuit to optimise the Versatic 10/Nicksyn? (Mintek synergist) system to be employed. Extraction and stripping parameters suitable for this stream were optimised in the laboratory and then applied on the demonstration plant. A commercial batch (0.5 tons) of Nicksyn? reagent was produced for the demonstration plant. The laboratory test work results and the demonstration plant performance are discussed in detail in this paper.

In an effort to improve efficiencies and reduce costs, AngloGold has embarked on a process to develop and deliver consistent, high quality, tailings based support or construction products to stopes and tunnels on request. A three-phase approach of product conceptualisation, design and delivery has been adopted. To date a substantial amount of laboratory development has taken place with promising results, indicating that the project aims are achievable. Dans un effort pour améliorer le rendement et réduire les coûts, AngloGold s’est embarqué dans une opération qui vise à développer et fournir aux chantiers d’extraction et tunnels, sur demande, des produits de construction ou de support basés sur rejets qui sont réguliers et de haute qualité. Une méthode à trois volets a été adoptée : conception, création et livraison. A ce jour, un développement important en laboratoire s’est produit, avec des résultats pleins de promesses, qui semblent indiquer que les buts du projet peuvent être atteints. In der Bemühung, die Effizienz zu steigern und Kosten zu verringern, hat AngloGold begonnen ein Verfahren zu entwickeln welches auf Anfrage konsistent hochqualitative auf Haufwerk basierender Unterstützung oder Bauprodukte für Abbaustellen und Tunnels entwickelt und liefert Eine Dreiphasenplan zur Produktkonzeptualisierung, Design und Lieferung wurde adoptiert. Bis jetzt hat eine substantielle Anzahl an Laborentwicklung mit vielversprechenden Resultaten stattgefunden und aufgezeigt, daß die Projektziele erreichbar sind.

Abstract Hydraulic fracturing is a technology that has been utilized for more than 50 years in the oil industry. It was originally used for stimulating hard, brittle formations which typically exhibit low permeabilities and roughly linear elastic behavior. Nonetheless, an increasingly important segment of the industry is currently stimulating very soft and poorly consolidated formations; where the assumptions of ideal elasticity and relatively small fluid leakoff fail to hold (e.g. Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, Alaska, East China). In these rocks, hydraulic fracturing stimulation has been used for several years to control and solve critical production problems such as sanding and formation damage (caused during completion and drilling operations). Although successful1, the application of this method has not been accompanied by robust fracturing modeling techniques. In addition, long term production increases were often not materialized. In other words, engineers have been able, via trial-and-error, to avoid major ‘operational’ problems but with no optimization of such treatments. Thus, most hydraulic fracturing projects carried out in poorly consolidated rocks render unexpected results. A recent worldwide survey on net pressures by the Delft Fracturing Consortium (Papanastasiou, 1997) indicated that net pressures encountered in the field are 50% to 100% higher than the net pressures predicted by conventional fracturing simulators. The difference is yet higher for the case of poorly consolidated formations (Pak, 1997). The theory for the construction of a fully coupled elastoplastic three-dimensional hydrofrac simulator, specifically conceived for unconsolidated rocks, is presented in this paper. This novel model calculates the dimensions and changes in shape of the fracture(s) being created during hydraulic fracturing operations. No assumptions are made regarding either shape or geometry of the crack(s). Three main failure criteria are used simultaneously in this model: tensile and shear stresses, and volumetric strain. Incremental forms of the governing equations of equilibrium and fluid flow are presented. The scheme chosen for solving this problem is the finite elements method, which allows both equations to be solved simultaneously at any instant in time. Résumé La fracturation hydraulique est une technologie qu’a été utilisé pour plus que 50 ans dans l'industrie pétrolière. Elle a été utilisée au début pour stimuler les formations dure et fragile que typiquement ont des perméabilités basses et un comportement élastique à peu près linéaire. Néanmoins, un segment plus important de l'industrie stimule actuellement des formations mal consolidées; où les suppositions d'élasticité idéale et de relativement petite fuite de fluide ne se tiennent pas raison (par exemple le Golfe de Mexique, l'Afrique d'ouest, Alaska, la Chine de l'est). Dans ces roches, la stimulation avec fracturation hydraulique a été utilisée pour plusieurs années pour contrôler et résoudre les problèmes critiques de production comme les dommages de formation et d’ensablement (causé pendant les opérations de l'accomplissement et forage). Bien que prospère, l'application de cette méthode n'a pas été accompagnée de techniques robustes pour le modelage de fractures. En outre, les augmentations à long terme de production n'ont pas été souvent concrétisées. En d'autre termes, les ingénieurs ont pu, via le procès et l’erreur, éviter les majeur problèmes ‘opérationnel’ mais avec aucune optimisation de tels traitements. Ainsi, la plupart des projets de fracturation hydraulique ont été exécuté dans des roches mal consolidées et ont rendu résultat totalement inattendu. Une récente étude mondiale sur les pressions nettes par le Consortium Delft pour Fracturer (Papanastasiou, 1997) a indiqué que les pressions nettes qu’ont été rencontré dans le champ sont environ 50% à 100% plus hautes que les pressions nettes prédites par les simulateurs fracturant conventionnels. La différence est pourtant plus importante pour le cas de formations mal consolidées (Pak, 1997). La théorie de construction d'un simulateur elastoplastic d’hydrofrac à trois dimensions entièrement couplé, en particulier conçu pour les roches non consolidés, est présentée dans ce papier. There is currently limited knowledge concerning South African coal deposits as hosts for rare earth elements (REE). This project aims to determine the concentration of REE, including yttrium and scandium (REY+Sc) in various coal seams and adjacent sediments in borehole cores from the Ermelo, Witbank, and Waterberg coalfields in South Africa. Coal petrography (maceral count and vitrinite reflectance), XRD, XRF, sequential chemical extraction procedure (SCEP) before ICPMS, and mineral liberation analysis (MLA) were conducted on the coal and associated sediment samples. The coals were inertinite-rich, medium-rank bituminous coal, with moderate to high ash content. The two dominant minerals in all the coalfields are kaolinite and quartz, except for sample ZBS2M, where dolomite was dominant. The dominant major oxides are Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, and CaO, which concur with the XRD results. The ICP-MS results following SCEP indicated that both coal and the associated sediments were light REY+Sc dominant. There was also an elevation of medium REY+Sc in the Witbank coal’s associated sediment samples. Notably, the samples with the highest REY+Sc results were the sediment samples. The Waterberg samples had the lowest REY+Sc from both the coal (less than 2 μg/g to 7 μg/g) and associated sediments (2 μg/g to 15 μg/g). While the highest REY+Sc was yielded from the Witbank-associated sediments (500 μg/g to 2,500 μg/g). The carbonate fraction step proved to be the most successful leaching step, as most REY+Sc was recovered in that step for all coalfields. In addition to the carbonate fraction, the silicates and sulfide fraction in the Witbank samples, and the ion-exchangeable fraction for the Waterbergassociated sediments samples proved successful in leaching out the REY+Sc. MLA determined that monazite and xenotime in all the coal samples were the REY+Sc-bearing minerals.

Copper and cobalt are generally electro-won from their aqueous sulphate solutions. After optimised leaching of their ores, concentrates or calcine bearing minerals, the leachate is clarified and suitably purified prior to the electrolytic extraction of the metal of pursuit (Pearcy, 2006). Solvent extraction (SX) using appropriate organic solvents and ion exchange (IX) with relevant resins are known purification processes used for copper and cobalt recovery (Stanely, 1970).As zeolites in general and natural zeolites in particular, demonstrate ion exchange properties (Korkuna et al., 2005), an attempt has been made to use Southern African natural clinoptilolite in the recovery of copper and cobalt from their aqueous sulphate solutions. Initially, synthetic Co and Cu solutions were prepared. Preceded by laboratory ore leachate, plant solutions are to be used. AAS, XRF, XRD, Mossbauer spectroscopy and BET were characterization techniques used. Natural clinoptilolite was used as-received as well as acid activated; and cobalt and copper extractions were performed at room temperature.

By the time a reagent is finally accepted by a mine for use on its plant it could have gone through several screening and evaluation stages. These stages may include laboratory and plant evaluation testwork. This paper outlines the steps that were followed to select, design and implement a frother for KONKOLA COPPER MINES PLC Nchanga Copper Concentrator in Zambia. It discusses initial frother screening work conducted at the Betachem metallurgical laboratory and the subsequent laboratory screening testwork conducted at Nchanga Concentrator. A modified Bikerman test method is discussed which was used to design a frother for the Nchanga flotation plant. The paper also gives an account of several plant scale trials conducted on Nchanga flotation plant and discusses the plant results, frother consumption patterns and some commercial concerns, before the product was finally accepted by the mine.

Primary lead production using the lead blast furnace in conventional practice is carried out using sinter feed. At YMG, China, the sinter plant has been replaced with a lead ISASMELT furnace. The ISASMELT furnace produces lead bullion plus a high-lead slag, which is cast into lumps to provide a suitable feed for the blast furnace. In the present study the relative microstructures and reduction characteristics of industrial lead sinters and synthetic ISASMELT slag in CO/CO2 gas mixtures have been measured and compared. The microstructure and property changes, and the mechanisms of reduction in each case are examined and discussed. The results of the study are used to explain the successful implementation of cast slag feed in commercial ISASMELT- lead blast furnace practice.
