The effects of the injection of dry limestone additives into boilers for the sorption of sulphur dioxide have been studied in pilot and full-scale systems. The effects of such injections on boiler mass particulate emissions as well as collectability characteristics of the fly ash and reaction products are presented. Implications of the effects on the design and economics of particulate collectors, in particular electrostatic precipitators, are discussed.

"Since the most of mineral processing are wet, and for more specific applications where it is necessary to increase the purity through leaching and / or concentration, the proper dispersion is the first, and perhaps more crucial stage in the whole chain of processing. This specific process is based on the formation of a dispersion or suspension of mineral, trying to make the mixture as homogeneous as possible, and with specific rheological conditions. Sometimes it is not enough agitation to make it happen, so that chemical additives are used as an aid. However, the addition of chemicals strongly alters the viscosity and other rheological properties of the suspension factor to consider for subsequent steps to ore beneficiation. In other hand, in a process where no chemicals used often employ large quantities of water to achieve dispersion. But if an efficient chemical agent, which optimizes said dispersion through a specific physicochemical effect on the particle surface is used, also it can generate rheological advantages, besides achieving rational use of water and increase the recoveries of the product main about also optimal costs. The aim of this work is to find the optimal rheological conditions for a dispersion of kaolin as study case, looking for stability, best disaggregation, viscosity and pseudoplasticity.To find the optimal additive, the evaluation parameters were: 1) Best degree of dispersion of the suspensions according to the analysis of the flow curve; 2) Best level of disaggregation of particle chemical analysis delaminated by Particle Size Distribution; and 3) Best thixotropic rheological parameters and pseudoplasticity. Finally the optimum additive as one that meets the best combination of parameters is proposed.INTRODUCTIONKaolin is a clay material formed by altering of feldspar composed mainly for kaolinite. Depending on the application, the kaolin as raw material must be refined and processed because the ores of clays contain usually a lot of impurities derived of its sedimentary source, such as feldspar, mica and quartz (Torres, et. al., 2011). According to the experience on the plant floor and the publication of several scientific papers, it is known that the dispersion is a crucial stage in mineral processing (Greene, Duke, & Hunter, 1965) (Raghavan, et. al., 2004), not only because of the disaggregation of particles, besides because of the humectation of them. Is clear that disaggregation of particles give to the suspensions rheological stability, and the humectation improves the effect of further processes like grinding or chemical treatment. The dispersion process involves making a suspension of the mineral with a solvent which is usually water, to obtain a homogeneous dispersion, with the aid of energy of stirring. Sometimes is not enough the agitation (even with high energy) for this to occur, so is necessary the use of dispersing substances which introduce ions and molecules as modifiers of chemical potential, forcing the molecules of the material to disperse. Sometimes their use even could affect the pH of the suspension in a non-desirable condition. (Flores, 2013)."

"This new tool can be used as a quick guide f or the assessment of the potential economic wealth of any risky capital project. It does provide an unambiguous recommendation of the type ""go or no go"" to the decision-maker simply by comparing two different ratios profit/investment. "Fluid inclusion studies from the Cinola deposit indicate low salinities and low C01 contents of the ore fluid. This supports a suggestion that the mineralizing fluids originated from pore water in the fluviatile host rock (mid-Miocene Skonun Formation). Bimodal distribution of filling temperatures suggests the existence of at least two temperature regimes centred on 160°C and 270°C during mineral deposition. Independent age and stratigraphic evidence indicates that depth of mineralization is between 1.1 and 1. 8 km, corresponding to a hydrostatic load of between 110 and 170 bars.RESUMELes donnees sur les inclusions fluides du gisement Cinola indiquent de basses salinites et basses teneurs en C01 . This paper proposes a charge induction dust measurement method based on detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) for use in coal mine environments, based upon electrostatic interference, dust properties, wind speed, particle size, moisture content and other factors. In this methods, sequence x(t) is first obtained through a dust concentration sensing probe, and then the cumulative deviation y(t) is calculated, and y(t) is divided into same lengths. Secondly, a first-order linear fit is used for data of each interval, and mean-square deviation filtered DFA was calculated for each interval. Finally, the dust mass concentration of the corresponding time is obtain by supplemented calibration coefficient and fitted the data point which is the mean and square root for all lengths of interval. Simulation and verification experiments showed that the charge induction dust measurement method based on DFA can reduce coal mine electrostatic interference effects with high accuracy. The design has been successfully applied to select areas.

Iron is a significant component of all copper concentrates leached in the HydroCopperTM process. The metals in the concentrate are leached in a chloride solution by oxidation with cupric ions. Copper enters into the solution as a cuprous chloro¬complex. Iron dissolves at the same time in the ferrous form, but it is immediately oxidized to the ferric state. Oxidation is effected by sparging air or oxygen into the leaching reactors. Because the pH is 1 - 2.5, ferric ion precipitates as akaganeite (T<90°C) or hematite (T> 90°C). Arsenic, antimony and the main part of the bismuth co-precipitate with iron and report to the leach residue. Cupric leaching is faster than iron oxidation; thus, leaching of low-iron concentrates (secondary copper minerals) is quicker than leaching high iron concentrates (chalcopyrite). Pyrite does not dissolve during copper leaching, but is oxidized slowly at higher redox-potentials after the copper has been leached.

Natural hazards such as rock bumps, methane, coal dust explosions, airborne respirable dust, outbursts of gas and rocks, water, radiation caused by natural radioactive materials, spontaneous fires, and climatic hazards, occurring in the Polish hard coal mines, should be controlled. These hazards are characterized by different scale levels numbered from 2?5. To recognize the amount and levels of hazards, research works were carried out in 109 mining districts of mines belonging to Jastrzebska Spólka Weglowa, Katowicki Holding Weglowy and Kompania Weglowa. These are 86 % of all mines and could be regarded as representative of the majority of Polish mining. The hazards have been classified as regards the frequency of their occurrence as: commonly occurring ? with a frequency of 100 % (like airborne respirable dust and fire hazards), high occurrence frequency ? frequency from 60 to below 100 % (methane hazard ? 83.5 %, coal dust explosion hazard ? 92.0 %, and water hazard ? 99.1 %), medium occurrence frequency ? from 30 to below 60 % (rock-bump hazard ? 52.3 % and climatic hazards ? 51.4 %), and episodic occurrence frequency ? below 30 % (outburst of gas and rocks and radioactive hazards). The dynamics of effects of growth in hazard levels to their intolerable values is diverse. Some of them are passive in nature, which allows for longer observation of changes and appropriate early response (as for climatic and spontaneous fire hazards). However the majority of them take on the character of disasters, like methane or coal dust explosions and damage of the excavation structure ? as occurs after a rock-bump or rock outburst; and creation of an atmosphere unfit for breathing ? during open or spontaneous fires, or after gas outbursts containing methane. There are also latent hazards whose effects do not influence indeed a process of production; however they are detrimental to health when a worker is exposed for a long time to airborne respirable dust and radiation. For other types of hazards a level of danger may be only estimated. Since the systems monitoring allows a wider range of control, therefore, aside from rock-bump and methane hazards, there are monitored also fire hazards including measurements of other air parameters (velocity, pressure, humidity, temperature, O2, CO2 concentration). A few types of monitoring systems are used in Polish mines, like the monitoring systems for environmental parameters such as SMP-NT, SMP-NT/A, the telemetric systems CST-40, CST/A, including the computer-aided system for methanometry control officer SWµP, the computer-aided measuring systems KSP-1, KSP-2, KSP-2C, or the production and safety control system VENTURON. The underground part of the systems monitoring of natural hazards contains measuring devices and equipment for automatic control (power-off) of machines and electric devices in case of increased methane hazard. The surface part of the monitoring system allows the measuring data to be visualized and pre-alarm (warning) and alarm states to be displayed. Furthermore it makes it possible to archive and report the data and to control the underground supply and signalling devices. The EMAG Institute developed monitoring methods to extend a measuring range of monitored parameters (such as methane and fire hazards) as well as to monitor so far unmonitored hazards like dust hazards (by continuous monitoring of dust levels in mine air) and climatic hazards (by online monitoring climatic parameters of mine air).

"IntroductionCALEY (1945) and Evans (1950) pointed out that certain instances of convergence between Devonian and Silurian horizons, frequently evident in wells drilled for oil and gas in Ontario, appear to be related to local thinning of salt beds in the Salina formation and they suggested that leaching of the salt beds may have occurred. Exploratory drilling by Imperial Oil Limited since 1945 has brought to light several examples of structures similar to those discussed by Caley and Evans. The writer has had the opportunity to examine cuttings and data from wells which penetrated these structures and the attempt to interpret them in the light of the theory of leaching and subsidence proposed by Landes ( 1945a) to explain the marked brecciation and deformation of Upper Silurian and Middle Devonian sediments which crop out in the Mackinac Straits region of northern Michigan has led to the observations presented in this paper."

The production process of a coal mine can often be interrupted by all kinds of events scheduled or unscheduled and thus often needs gas drainage for a temporary or long-term sealed area. Gas drainage has a relatively high risk, therefore attention must be paid to its design to keep the process safe. Based on the conservation laws of mass and constituents, and under the conditions of the allowable gas concentration limit in the return air route, the relationship between gas concentration and gas drainage flow rate as a function of time during the drainage process is discussed in detail to build a mathematical model of gas drainage from a sealed area. With respect to the gas drainage process, two different conditions need to be considered: one with a methane free fresh air supply, the other with a low gas concentration. This paper presents the derived mathematical models for these situations and then shows that they can be incorporated into one model with some modification. This combined model can be employed to determine the optimum gas drainage flow rate with the shortest drainage time. The application is coded using the C# programming language within the .NET framework. Finally, the application program developed by the author is used to validate the mathematical model through an example of gas drainage with varying rate.

The program to increase production at Sherritt Gordon&apos;s Lynn Lake property, which began in 1956, included increasing the rope speed and the horsepower of the ore hoist at the "A" shaft. Because of the limited power sup-ply from the two 7,000-hp. hydroelectric plants, and the ? 3,600 hp. predicted for the combined hoisting requirements of the three production shafts, it was considered desirable to lessen the impact of this type of load on the relatively small power system by equipping all future hoisting arrangements with Ward Leonard direct-current drives. The manually operated 8-by 4-ft. hoist at the "A" shaft had a rope speed of 1000 f.p.m., and was driven by a 385-hp., 380-r.p.m. wound rotor motor with liquid rheostat control. This A.C. drive was replaced by a semi-automatic Ward Leonard direct-current drive with a 515-hp., 566-r.p.m., shunt wound motor, providing a rope speed of 1,500 f.p.m. During several months preceding the con-version, all possible preparations were carried out to keep the changeover period to a minimum, and this resulted in a total shutdown time of twelve days. The capability of the "A" Shaft hoist was increased from 109 tons per hour to 134 tons per hour, and both mechanical and electrical maintenance were reduced considerably. The total cost of the conversion amounted to $130,000. The hoistmen who had been required for the manual A.C. drive were transferred to the new Farley shaft, and the reduction in operating labour costs of the "A" Shaft hoist

"The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) operates a gold and silver refining toll operation in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The silver refining line is a recent addition and was commissioned in 2005. One source of silver in the refinery is from gold doré which undergoes Miller chlorination before electrorefining to 99.99% cathode gold. Treatment of the Miller salt or silver-copper chloride produced consisted of a 2-stage high temperature reduction process step using soda ash prior to 2005. Copper-rich silver bars were produced and shipped offsite for further refining.The copper-rich bars could not be blended into sufficient high grade silver doré to dilute the copper and allow electrorefining in a silver nitrate medium. A new wet process was developed and commissioned to replace the high temperature reduction and allow removal of bulk copper. Thus upgraded impure silver produced was cast into anode for electrorefining to 99.9% purity silver flake. The 2005 RCM Hydromet Slag process is presented as well as its more current version. In addition, mention is made of a novel processing scenario for the introduction of Miller chlorination silver into the electrorefining circuit."

The hot deformation behavior of a Mg-9A1-1Zn alloy produced by high pressure die casting has been investigated by means of compression tests in the temperature and strain rate ranges of 125-300°C and 10-5-10-1 s-1 and torsion tests over 150-450°C and 5, 0.5, 0.05 5-1 . The compression samples were deformed in the die-cast state or after homogenization at 415°C for 2 h to evaluate improvements. A premature fracture at 45° with respect to the compression axis was observed in samples strained at low temperatures and high strain rates. The torsion specimens were tested as received or after a predeformation-homogenization treatment. In addition to constitutive analyses suitable for modeling previously published, the results are fitted to a relationship between strain rate normalized by diffusion coefficient and flow stress normalized by modulus. The results fit well with a set of published creep experiments that were conducted in the range of 70-150°C.

Nowadays, all French former uranium mining sites are remediated and redeveloped. If needed, mining waters containing radium have to be treated before discharged into the environment. Classical radium treatment consists in a (Ba,Ra)SO4 salt precipitation and radium monitoring was carried out using a time-consuming analysis called emanometry. Three zeolite samples have been tested to remove 226Ra from mining water. In batch experiment, radium was totally (R=100%) and quickly removed after 2 minutes contact time. Continuous sorption experiments were carried out through a vertical column at lab scale. Chabazite is the most efficient zeolite with an 226Ra activity below 0.2 Bq/L until 60000 Bed Volume. Chabazite is always efficient although radium content in material reaches 150 Bq/g. 226Ra uptake was also tested at semi-industrial scale on a pilot plant. More than 3000 m3 were successfully treated with a radium content below 0.1 Bq/L. The environmental impact assessment of Ra-chabazite was characterized by using batch leaching tests made according to the NF EN 12457-2 standard as applied on all wastes. Ra-chabazite stability is excellent during this test: radium leaching is very low, less than 0.005%. A new 226Ra measurement method was developed by ICP-MS for a better analysis reactivity. This new method was carried out in a couple of minutes with a lower sample volume than emanometry. The validation was performed according to the French NF T90-210 standard for the calibration function definition, the limit of quantification, the accuracy and the interferences.

The reliability of mining systems is generally low due to their harsh working conditions. Currently, efforts for improving mining system reliability are often made in isolation. This practice could substantially limit the effectiveness of the efforts on overall reliability improvement of the mining system. To enhance the overall reliability of mining systems, an integrated improvement approach is necessary. In this paper, we developed a framework for integrated mining system reliability improvement to address this issue. In this framework, there are five major components including data integration, business process integration, hardware integration, software integration, and analysis/decision integration, but we only focus on the integrated reliability analysis which is important to the analysis/decision integration. The reliability analysis considers the interactions between machines, and the impacts of design, operation, maintenance, automation and working environment on the overall system reliability. These multiple interactions present a big challenge to accurate reliability prediction. In this paper, we for the first time systematically investigated integrated reliability analysis approaches for dealing with this challenge using novel models and methods, including covariate hazard models, intelligent reliability prediction approach, and complex system modeling methods. While these models and methods have found some successful applications in other industries, they in general have not been effectively used for the reliability analysis of mining systems. Our study results show that the system integration approach is applicable to mining systems and can be used for developing a computer aided integration system for the implementation of the integrated reliability improvement approach.

"In this work, the kinetics of ferric-ferrous redox reaction on a passivated sphalerite electrode is studied by the application of chronoamperometry method in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution. The electrochemical behaviour of ferric and ferrous couple was investigated on two sphalerite minerals acquired from two different geological regions (Iran and Canada). The carbon paste electrode (CPE) of sphalerite was initially prepared and passivated in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution and after reaching the steady-state condition, ferric and ferrous sulfate solution was added. The registered current density differences between the current density of the passivated electrode and that of the electrode in the iron salts added solution were interpreted for kinetics of ferric-ferrous reduction-oxidation reaction. The equilibrium potential for ferric-ferrous couple on sphalerites surface was about 500 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. The exchange current density (i0) for ferric-ferrous redox reactions on the sphalerite samples had the same magnitude of 10–6 A cm–2. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements at 550 mV vs. Ag/AgCl illustrated that sphalerite oxidation was controlled by two charge transfer process in both of Fe-free and Fe-containing solutions. The charge transfer resistance remarkably decreased when Fe salts added to the 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution, owing to the ferric-ferrous redox reactions being the predominant reactions on sphalerite surface.INTRODUCTION Direct atmospheric leaching processes for sphalerite concentrates are performed by reduction of an oxidant (e.g. ferric ion and oxygen) and oxidation of sphalerite to zinc ions. "Abstract - The Little Falls member of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation is situated in the northern part of the Brunswick Belt of the Bathurst Mining Camp and has been interpreted as the distal equivalent of proximal tuffaceous rocks that host the stratiform Brunswick No. 12 and No. 6 Pb-Zn massive sulfide deposits. It comprises fine-grained, greenish-gray tuffaceous sandstone in the lower part, and coarse-grained, crystal-rich tuffaceous sandstone in the upper part. Petrographic evidence suggests that these rocks have a turbiditic origin. The Little Falls member is underlain by the Vallée Lourdes member, mainly composed of relatively shallow-water calcareous rocks, and is conformably overlain by Mn-rich sedimentary rocks, mainly red argillites that host the Tetagouche Falls Mn-(Fe) deposit. All these rocks are considered to belong to the Nepisiguit Falls Formation, part of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Whole-rock geochemical data from the fine-grained tuffaceous sandstone and coarse-grained tuffaceous sandstone indicate that the two units of the Little Falls member are distinct. Zr and TiO2 contents, and total rare earth element (REE) values are higher in the coarse-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.040, average SREE = 247 ppm, n = 6) than in the fine-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.048, average SREE = 158 ppm, n = 17), which can be attributed to the variation in crystal content between the two units. Both units are HREE-enriched and have elevated La/Yb relative to the typical Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Overall, the geochemical data combined with evidence from the bounding units suggest that the Little Falls member was deposited in relatively shallow water, possibly in a near-arc environment. The relationship of volcanic facies within the Nepisiguit Falls Formation and the geochemistry of these facies indicate strongly that fine grained, reworked tuffaceous rocks, regardless of whether they are the distal equivalents of proximal tuffaceous rocks, are not associated with the major ore-bearing horizons of the Bathurst Mining Camp. Les données lithogéochimiques des grès tuffacés à grains fins et à grains grossiers indiquent que ces deux unités du Membre de Little Falls sont distinctes. Les teneurs en Zr et en TiO2, ainsi que la teneur totale en Éléments des Terres Rares (ÉTR) sont plus élevées dans l’unité à grains grossiers (Zr/TiO2 moyen = 0.040, SREE moyen = 247 ppm, n = 6) que dans l’unité à grains fins (Zr/TiO2 moyen = 0.048, SREE moyen = 158 ppm, n = 17), ce qui pourrait s’expliquer par la variation de la quantité de cristaux dans chacune de ces deux unités. Chacune de ces deux unités présente un enrichissement en ÉTRL ainsi qu’un rapport La/Yb relativement plus grand que ce qui est typiquement observé dans la Formation de Nepisiguit Falls. "The Rexspar uranium deposits are located near Birch Island in central British Columbia. The property lies within the Omineca crystalline belt of the Cordilleran Orogen. Gneiss, schist, tuffaceous and porphyritic trachyte are the main rock types encountered on the property. These rocks are of pre-Late Triassic or probable Mississippian age.Lenticular bodies of mica and pyrite-rich rock are the host of three closely spaced uranium deposits and are found close to a fluorite deposit. The altered trachytic rock as well as the fluorite and uranium deposits are found in the upper part of the trachyte unit. The latest tonnage estimates are 1,441,820 tonnes averaging 23.46% CaF, for the fluorite deposit, 490,966 tonnes of 0.084% U10afor the 'W' deposit, 164,290 tonnes of 0.074% UP8 for the ""B"" deposit and 459,124 tonnes of 0. 071 o/o UP8 for the ""BD"" deposit.A hydrothermal replacement origin was first proposed for the fluorite and uranium deposits. The mineralizing and altering solutions would have been genetically related to a felsic batholith outcropping a few kilometres south of the property. Another hypothesis has been proposed more recently. A volcanic centre has been tentatively identified in the upper part of the trachyte unit, close to the mineral deposits. "Abstract - Potentially commercial deposits of kaolin are found in the fluvial Lower Cretaceous Chaswood Formation, the sedimentologically proximal equivalent of deltaic sediments of the offshore Scotian basin. The geological setting of the kaolin deposits has been interpreted from high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles and boreholes, and mineralogical studies on one reference borehole. The kaolin is a product of early diagenesis involving meteoric water below the water table. The distribution of kaolin is controlled by the presence of intraformational unconformities that were sites of ground water recharge, and are marked by the development of oxisols above the water table. Such diagenesis was facilitated by interbedded, loosely consolidated, permeable sandstone. The highest-grade kaolin deposits are found in areas close to river belts, where overbank muds were not sufficiently drained to develop paleosols, but where later uplift created intraformational unconformities. In the sandstone, meteoric water flow altered feldspars to kaolin, thus yielding commercial silica sand deposits. It also altered ilmenite to rutile, which is concentrated as secondary placers in modern rivers that have eroded the Chaswood Formation and tills derived therefrom. Le contexte géologique de ces dépôts de kaolin a été interprété a partir de profils de seismique-réflection à haute résolution, de sondages, et d’études minéralogiques sur un sondage de référence. Ce kaolin est un produit diagénétique précoce formé par de l’eau météorique sous le niveau de la nappe phréatique. La distribution du kaolin est contrôlée par la présence de zones de recharge associées à des discordances intraformationelles marquées par le développement d’oxisols au-dessus du niveau de la nappe phréatique. La présence d’interlits de grès perméables faiblement consolidés a contribué à l’efficacité de ce processus diagénétique. Les dépôts de kaolin les plus riches se trouvent en périphérie des rivières, là ou les boues de la plaine d’inondation n’étaient pas suffisamment bien drainées pour permettre le développement de paléosols, mais où des mouvements verticaux subséquents ont crée des discordances intraformationelles. La circulation d’eau météorique dans les grès a entraîné l’altération des feldspaths en kaolin, générant ainsi des dépôts économiques de sable de silice. Elle a aussi causé l’altération de l’ilménite en rutile, que l’on trouve dans des placers secondaires situés dans des rivières contemporaines qui ont érodé la Formation de Chaswood et les tills qui en sont dérivés."
