A geophysical technique of rock mass assessment for engineering purposes is being investigated and shows positive correlation with direct structural logging and mapping techniques for the detection of major geological features. The technique is cross-hole acoustic surveying incorporating high speed signal averaging, with a maximum hole separation in excess of 30 metres in hard unfractured rock masses. The bulk of the field test work was carried out in open stopes in the copper ore bodies of Mount Isa Mines Limited. The investigation forms part of an integrated study of blasting in mining, aiming for fragmentation control through blast design modification. The rock quality factor, Q, is presented as a blasting index and can be determined for a significant portion of a production stope.

The KR Process is a joint development by VOEST-ALPINE, Austria and its subsidiary company KORF ENGINEERING, Germany. This new technology allows production of hot metal on the basis of non-coking coal. The KR Process is based on the idea of separating the process steps realized in the blast furnace (generation of reduction gas, reduction of iron oxide and melting of the reduced iron) and including coking of coal. These reactions are carried out in two reactors: - the melter gasifier, where non- coking coal is coked and gasified into a high quality reduction gas and hot prereduced iron is melted. - the reduction furnace, where iron oxide is reduced by the reduction gas generated in the melter gasifier and discharged in a hot state. In order to prove the process a pilot plant has been set up in Kehl/ Rhine in 1981 with a nominal capacity of 60.000 tpy.

Addressing nutrient deficiency, among other factors, is vital to the growth and establishment of plants in mine spoils and tailings ponds. Although several organic amendments are available for this purpose, it is important to determine the appropriate ameliorant for the selected plant species. This research examined the effect of different amendments on the growth and ground cover of Centrosema molle, Calopogonium mucunoides and Sorghum spp. in copper/gold tailings. Plant growth and ground cover drastically increased with the application of organic ameliorants, especially manure. Among the three plants, Calopogonium exhibited the best growth and has shown its capability to establish a dense ground cover even in unamended tailings. Results suggest that the plant species and the ameliorants used in this study could be effective in a low-input approach to mine rehabilitation.CITATION:Domingo, J P T and David, C P C, 2014. Uranium solvent extraction, USX has been applied commercially for recovery and concentration for over 50 years. Uranium in acidic liquor, which is prepared following ore leaching, solid/liquid separation and clarification, can be treated through a sequence of operations; extraction-scrubbing-stripping, to obtain purified liquor. USX has dominated the primary uranium industry as the preferred technological route to converter grade yellowcake. The practices of design and operation of USX facilities has found renewed interest as new mines are developed following decades of industry dormancy. This article seeks to outline principles of design and operation from the practitioner’s perspective. The discussion also reviews historical developments of USX applications and highlights recent innovations. This review is hoped to provide guidance for technical personnel who wish to learn more about good practices that leads to reliable USX performance.

A breaker line support (BLS) monitoring system, BLSmon, has been designed and constructed by the CSIRO and installed and commissioned at Laleham No.] Colliery, Queensland. This system was designed to record hydraulic leg pressure and canopy position measurements and relay these, in real time, to the surface. The system has shown itself to be capable of operating on the BLSs without any adverse affect on production. Analysis of the results of the monitoring exercise has shown that rate of change of leg pressures on the BLSs could be used as an aid in the prediction of adverse mining conditions. Under favourable mining conditions the supports were observed to initially unload from the set pressure, this unloading reduced with time and by the end of a typical lift cycle had either ceased or reversed slightly. This behaviour was considered to be due to one of four possible causes, these being; the compaction of floor debris, and/or compaction of the floor, and/or crushing of the roof and /or support creep. The actual cause can only be determined through detailed monitoring of both roof and support convergence. However observational data would suggest that compaction of debris and softened floor material beneath the supports was the most likely cause. The few positive loading rates recorded under these conditions were of short duration and occurred towards the end of individual lifts. Where mining conditions were unfavourable the negative rates of change of pressure, unloading of the support, were reduced throughout a lift, in both duration and magnitude, when compared with favourable mining conditions. Over the same period the positive rates of change were observed to be greater. The rate of change of loading and convergence can be utilised to identify the onset of instability in the lift area. However, before this facility can be utilised by the mine for the reliable prediction of instability more monitored data and sophisticated processing techniques are required.

Much of this infor- mation has come from contemporaneous publications by the New Zealand Department of Mines. Alluvial gold production declined after 1902, and ceased completely in 1982, but is now rising again. The progress of the New Zealand alluvial gold mining industry is considered, together with some of its more exceptional successes. Recent developments are com- pared to those of the past.

Classification devices provide a link between comminution and flotation. Basically, it determines which particles are diverted back for additional grinding and which ones pass to downstream flotation. Therefore, the classifiers play an important role in the performance of a mineral processing circuit. Hydrocyclones are the most common classifiers used in wet grinding, despite being associated with poor classification efficiency. Hydrocyclones are widely used due to advantages related to low maintenance as well as reduced capital and operating cost. Other classifiers, such as fine screens, have much better classification efficiency compared to hydrocyclones. The major challenge of using screens in an operation, however, is their large footprint and increased maintenance requirements relative to hydrocyclones. Some researchers have demonstrated that switching from hydrocyclones to screens, as the classifier device in a ball milling circuit, resulted in a 20 per cent increase in plant throughput and significant improvements in coarse particle recovery, resulting in a 6 per cent increase in overall flotation recovery. However, it is known that these benefits of improved classification are very much ore specific, ie depending on the ore response. Therefore, there is a need to estimate the benefits of improved classification in pilot scale testing before the plant could consider the potential classifier upgrade. This paper presents the results of two pilot-scale grinding tests where the ore sample was processed using different classifiers: a traditional hydrocyclone and hybrid classification involving the use of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone followed by a screen. The size specific energy and circulating load were used to compare the performance of the grinding circuit. The grinding product was subject to mineral liberation analysis and the impact of classification efficiency on the mineral liberation is discussed in the paper.

Transmission and scanning electron microscopy together with X-ray spectral microprobe analysis were used to investigate the structure and chemical composition of pathological calcified formations on the bioprostheses of heart valves. Controllable synthesis was carried out under the conditions (T = 37¦C, pH = 7.4) when the ion composition of the main elements (Ca, P, Mg and NaCl) is close to their concentrations in blood plasma. It is proposed on the basis of the obtained results that the formation of the hydroxyapatite of calcific inclusions on bioprostheses occurs as a result of spontaneous precipitation in the blood plasma. One of the factors determining the formation of massive calcified bodies on the bioprostheses of heart valves can be decreased magnesium concentration in blood.

There are two fundamental methods for metalliferous sensing of primary crushed ore available for deployment at operations. These methods can be classed as surface measurement techniques (including XRF, LIBS, NIR, SWIR) or penetrative/semi-penetrative measurement techniques (including PGNAA, PFTNA, GAA, MR). While the individual sensing technologies exploit different physical phenomena to measure metal content, penetrative sensor measurements of grade are often regarded to be superior to surface measurement techniques due to the much larger sampling volume penetrative techniques provide. Surface sensing techniques often utilise simpler, established technologies that have considerable benefits in the speed of analysis, capital costs, ease of deployment, social license to operate and operational safety. This paper investigates whether surface sensing techniques achieve adequate sampling representativity of primary crushed rock mass to provide economic benefit over penetrative sensing technologies for bulk ore sorting applications. The paper details the methodology used to assess whether surface XRF measurements change throughout various stages of comminution, and increased surface exposure, from primary crushed ore (top size of -175mm) to finely crushed product for assay (top size -2mm). The methodology was applied to 2 ore mineralisation styles, across variable metals and grades, to identify any associated opportunities and limitations to surface sensing techniques. The results assist in developing a method to determine if surface sensing and measuring via XRF is an adequate representation of the rock mass for bulk ore sorting applications and identify any associated limitations in particle size distribution, mineralisation or natural deportment strength to guide suitable application of surface sensing techniques.

The safe life cycle of a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is founded on the fundamentals of proper design, construction, operation and closure. Leinster Nickel Operations (Leinster) utilises four active TSF cells that are cycled between filling (deposition), desiccation, and construction to meet a targeted rate of rise. This results in ongoing and consistent raising of the TSF walls. Critical to maintaining the safe life cycle through this consistent wall raising is precision construction and high frequency quality assurance to ensure compliance to design requirements and TSF walls free from defects. Leinster has recently deployed Intelligent Machine Control technology for TSF construction. Advances in Intelligent Machine Control have decreased variability in construction; ensuring variations are within the tolerances of design. The Intelligent Machine Controls are programed to ensure construction conforms to design tolerances of +/-30mm. This level of accuracy provides assurance of borrow area set out, compacted layers are as per design, compaction monitoring is within the zone placed, scarification between layers to prevent lamination is maintained, and batter angles are set to the correct grade. This level of control provides certainty that construction meets the design intent. In conjunction with Intelligent Machine Control, periodic drone surveys are conducted to verify construction against design. Advancement in survey equipment and techniques allow higher frequency, high accuracy survey to be completed on demand by site based personnel. This provides quality assurance through all stages of the construction phases, as well as the final constructed wall, ensuring compliance to design. Combining Intelligent Machine Control with higher frequency quality assurance provides an increased level of certainty that the TSF construction is defect free and within quality specifications. These recent technological advancements in Construction and Quality Assurance ensure cell raises are constructed to the design intent with greater levels of accuracy and precision than ever before.

The Australian underground coal mining industry is undergoing major changes. This paper analyses the technologies presently being researched in mines, and discusses their utilisation as major contributors in the underground mining of coal in Australia over the next 20 years. It describes the problems that underground mining of the year 2000 will face and the possible solutions to those problems based upon results of present day research. Methods, equipment and organisational requirements are outlined. Developments in micro-electronics, computerisation and monitoring will require a new look into human resource development, education and training, and organisation to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The mining system's philosophies of the future are Outlined.

Batch centrifugal gravity concentrators have become standard equipment in gold grinding circuits for recovery of gravity recoverable gold (GRG). The downstream benefits of installing a gravity circuit are well understood, and in general, if there is a reasonable amount of GRG in the ore, a gravity circuit is usually installed. The benefits of gold gravity recovery have also been well documented, with a large database of successful case studies. As well, predicting production scale gravity recovery results ahead of installing gravity has become a common practice. The missing link between lab and full scale has always been the ability to predict the recovery benefit of installing gravity ahead of actually doing so. Being able to predict the recovery benefit in advance would help an operation in assessing the economic benefit and help justify the capital costs of the gravity circuit with much less uncertainty.

Minimising dilution and ore loss is an important part of ensuring profitability of a gold mining operation. White Foil open pit gold deposit is a low-grade deposit and therefore managing ore quality is a high priority. Ground movement through blasting can displace ore and waste boundaries up to 10 m from their in situ location and therefore requires stringent ore movement monitoring and adjustment. There are currently only two options for monitoring blast movement – utilising visual targets (commonly lengths of polypipe) but this has widely been replaced by electronic blast movement monitors (or BMM). Regardless of the technology used, the basic principle is to compare the pre- and post-blast locations of the targets to determine the movement of the rock mass during blasting, which is then used to determine the final location of ore and waste boundaries.The Blast Movement Technologies (BMT) BMM system has been used at White Foil since June 2014. The system has been effective and reliable during that time; however, the annual cost of using the BMM system is greater than other monitoring alternatives. As such, the open pit geology team conducted a study comparing the BMM system against the conventional polypipe technique. The objective was to quantify the profit and loss that would occur based on the ore block transformations from both methods. Eight blasts were selected where polypipes were installed in additional holes adjacent to the BMM monitoring holes. The resulting movement vectors from the respective methods were used to create post-blast ore blocks by transforming the in situ ore blocks. While polypipe is a cheaper alternative, the BMM system tracks ore and waste boundaries more effectively resulting in better quality control, enhanced ability to minimise dilution and ore loss thus maximising profit. For these eight blasts, it is calculated that the BMM system resulted in A$664 978 extra profit through a reduction of ore loss. The total cost of a yearly BMM package was recovered in the first two blasts of this study. The primary reason for the difference is that polypipe had a poor recovery rate of 32 per cent compared with 92 per cent for BMM at White Foil. Therefore, the data used to transform the ore blocks was less representative, resulting in inaccurate post-blast ore block boundaries when using polypipe.CITATION:Watson, M E, 2017. Flotation behaviour can be controlled, due to diminishment of granula quality and extension of specific surface area, by adding coarse particles (high- grade concentrates) to condition pulp. It has been substantiated that coarse particles can intensify fine particle flotation and its mechanisms are effects of carrier, intermedium and assistant aggregation of coarse particles. Calculation and analysis of Reynolds numbers and their variation for different size particles, under specific turbulent dynamic conditions, reveal that agglomeration among granulae is subject to specific turbulent dynamic conditions. Furthermore, sizes and adhesion strength of flocculated particles are the function of specific physical and chemical factors. Based on this research an innovative ramification carrier flotation process has been developed, which has been applied to Fankou Lead- Zinc Mine, Guang Dong province, China, etc, with satisfactory results. These results shed light on distinction between conventional flotation and fine particle flotation, meanwhile, provide a basic approach for further solution of fine particle flotation problem.

The investigation of the explosion characteristics of nine Bowen Basin (Central Queensland) dust samples in a suitable coal dust explosion chamber using a new dust concentration probe provides several advances in the area of coal dust explosibility testing. The 20 litre explosion chamber, of novel design, uses rotation of the main body of the chamber together with air jets for dust dispersion, and allows testing of different types of explosion initiators and analysis of the explosion characteristics of coal dust/methane mixtures of varying concentrations.A new development was a dielectric dust probe for the measurement of coal dust concentration. A capacitive micrometry technique was successfully adapted to measure dust concentration. The system uses a ratio-transformer bridge for measurement of small changes in a capacitive probe designed to sample a representative volume. The device is accurate, and is capable of operating in the hostile environment within the explosion chamber.The explosion chamber and dust probe characterise the explosive potential of coal dust samples by determination of the dust lean limit concentration in varying mixture with methane. Plots of lean limit points obtained in this way present an explosion curve for each sample which indicates the potential of the coal dust/methane to explode under the conditions of initiation in the chamber. The explosion curve obtained for each sample presents a unique signature that appears to reflect the physical and chemical characteristics of the dust.The results from this series of laboratory experiments appear to provide a useful index and indicate potential areas of interest for future research.

"Brazil is the sixth worldwide producer of aluminum and Votorantim (Metals) has been operating three bauxite open pit mines in a particular way of working. In those the deposits occur on the top of hills, under forest, coffee, eucalyptus plantation or pasture area.The deposits are not large and normally mining takes an average of two months to be completed before starting the rehabilitation process, which demands a good strategy in mining planning to achieve the production goals.The benefit function developed to select feasible areas uses, beyond production costs, fees from the owner by using their area and rehabilitation cost. Both are based on land use and occupation field survey data. In this process each area with different land use receives a specific rehabilitation cost as input into a block model.Once the selection is made the mining schedule begins, taking into consideration the following premise: the orebody needs to be mined in a short period of time because during this time, the surface owners receive from Votorantim a compensation based on the expected profits from their plantation or pasture, plus royalties related to the ore amount existing in their area.Not all operations have waste dumps. Waste is pushed down by bulldozers to the lower part of the ore border. After loading and transporting ore, the waste is handled back to the mined area to fit the topography. With this step concluded, the mined area is directed to the environmental team who, alongside university partners, develop land reclamation to return them to their owners, eg in 2011, 110 ha were rehabilitated of which 29 per cent is native forest.Votorantim closes many mined areas a year and currently the entire mine planning considers this particular way of operation, making profit with minimum interference with the community and the environment.CITATION:Artioli, P, Kato, M S, Romanel, A and Piermatei, M P, 2012. The Eriez HydroFloat® is a flotation device capable of recovering significantly coarser and lessliberated particles than is possible using a conventional mechanical flotation cell. Originally developed for industrial and bulk mineral beneficiation, the HydroFloat® is attracting increasing interest as a means of increasing the required grind size for metalliferous ore flotation. Doing so would reduce the costs of processing complex ores, either by decreasing the energy required to grind the flotation feed or by increasing the throughput achievable with a given comminution circuit. Processing coarser particles would also result in coarser waste streams, potentially improving the mechanical and hydraulic performance of the waste dams that they are sent to. Recent work at pilot – and industrial-scale has proven the potential of the HydroFloat® technology to achieve these gains in metalliferous applications. However, in order to realise the full potential of the HydroFloat® technology, it is necessary to understand not just its performance but also the drivers for that performance. Doing so will allow the design and operation of HydroFloat® devices to be optimised for different ores and applications. For this work, a HydroFloat® pilot rig was deployed to a coppergold plant in Australia and was used to investigate the effect of stream and operating conditions for treating the tailings stream of one of the plant’s rougher flotation cells. Under each set of operating conditions, samples were taken of the HydroFloat® feed, tailings and concentrate streams, and processed to yield the grade and recovery achieved by the device. At the same time, the bubble size and bed behaviour inside the device were measured. This paper presents preliminary relationships observed between the operating conditions and the performance of the HydroFloat® cell, and thus suggests a range of possible drivers for the measured coarse particle flotation performance.

Proposals for engineering works in the River Dement in recent years have been made in the context of very little geological informat- ion. Breakage of the Tasman Bridge, forced a complete re-appraisal and collection of inform- ation in order to select a new site and predict problems. Seismic, magnetic and gravity methods foll- owed by drilling have allowed an assessment of the nature, thickness and distribution of mater- ials underlying the river bed. Key discoveries included recognition of low seismic velocity silts (1100 m/s) and a separate channel for the river since the Late Tertiary.

The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been procuring the expansion of their underground mass rapid transit rail network at a prodigious rate since the first line opened in 1987. Four lines (149 km) are currently operating and several more lines are at various stages of planning/construction; one of these is the Downtown line stage 2 (DTL 2).DTL 2 contract C917 was awarded in September 2009 for S$320 M. On 18 June 2013 the original contractor became insolvent, leaving the works incomplete. Following a fast-tracked tender process, McConnell Dowell was awarded the S$254 M contract on 29 August 2013 to complete the works. This contract includes two underground stations constructed by cut-and-cover methods and twin bored tunnels between the stations. Each tunnel is 1400 m long, excavated by earth pressure balanced (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) at an average depth of 20 m and segment lined to 5.8 m inner diameter. The tunnel alignment is located under a busy five-lane road lined with prime residential real estate and congested with utilities.To compound the difficulty the tunnels are located within the notorious Bukit Timah Granite formation. This has a very wide range of strength, from below 1 MPa to over 300 MPa. This strength range is a consequence of six weathering grades, from soil to fresh rock, with the fresh granite causing severe abrasion problems. The various grades can occur within a very short distance of each other. Consequently, the problem of supporting a mixed face exists, particularly in the intermediate weathering grades where intact rock is encountered in the invert and corestones within a loose soil matrix in the crown, which can increase the instability by allowing the ground to flow into the TBM.The focus of this paper will be the excavation of the bored tunnels by EPB TBM used by McConnell Dowell to complete these challenging works.CITATION:Jones, G and Shepherd, J, 2014.
