The narrow quartz vein deposits at Konongo and Ghana Main Reef gold mines in Ghana were emplaced during the plastic flow cross folding of pre-existing sub-isoclinally folded volcanic and perivolcanic deposits of Proterozoic age. The older fold structures tightened differentially according to their position in relation to the axes of the cross fold pattern giving complex outlines to the reefs in both plan and cross section.Some 4500 measurements of bedding plane linears were used in the resolution of the Boabedroo footwall structure at Konongo. The methodology developed at the Boabedroo mine was then successfully applied to other complex bodies at the Konongo and Ghana Main Reef mines.All mine development, especially stope preparation, of the folded quartz reefs at Konongo and Ghana Main Reef was controlled by the geologist to ensure that the veins were removed with as few geologically enduced hiccoughs as possible.

The feed preparation section of the Whyalla iron ore pellet plant includes a screening and crushing plant followed by dry grinding mills. Improvements in the efficiency of the vibrating screen and cone crusher have enabled screening plant throughput to be increased and product size to be decreased. This, in turn, has enabled improvements in the grinding mills' operation.

Poor ground conditions associated with historical workings have presented significant challenges to the drilling of production downholes at the Sons of Gwalia Mine. The combination of foam and polymer drilling, the use of Aquacrete to drill through voids and the practice of lining completed holes has allowed downholes to be effectively drilled and blasted in delaminated ground.

Substantial savings in terms of project time, cost, and financial viability can result through the expert involvement of independent financial advisors in the early stages of any mining project's preparation. This role is not confined to project financing, financial modelling, valuations and corporate finance advice, but may in the early stages be much more strategic in nature, covering a wide group of subject areas. A number of separate examples and case studies are outlined, which show the manner in which financial advisors can be effectively used. The benefits arising from involving an additional professional team with the project group must be offset against the separate and additional cost factors involved.

The nature of exploration in Australia is reviewed from its inception to the present time. It is seen as consisting of three phases: the first, prospecting; the second and third, mainly company-based activity. The first yielded the discoveries on which the mining industry was originally built. The great recent growth of the industry has been due mainly to the discoveries of the third. The technical, organisational, legis- lative and other aspects are reviewed. The overall result has been a very great increase in the known mineral resources and, viewed collectively, exploration is seen as providing the principal means of assessing, evaluating and building up the nation's mineral resources.

A detailed study on oil agglomeration of fine metal oxide particles is presented in this paper. The major content embraces several aspects which may possibly reflect the current trends in oil agglomeration such as the effect of chemical and physical parameters, the activation of target minerals and the deactivation of gangue particles, the mechanisim of bridging liquid and the kinetics of oil agglomeration process. Systems of ilmenite-feldspar, manganese dioxide - quartz were seperated successfully through oil agglomeration followed by decantation or flotation technique respectively. A triple mixture of vandium-bearing titanomagnetite ilmenite and feldspar was processed satisfactorily using a composite technology: oil agglomeration-decantation-magnetic concentration.

The Kidston Gold Mine i s located in northern Queensland some 2 Ukm northwest of Townsville. I t is the largest gold mine in Australia and produces approximately 25 percent of Australia's gold and one percent of the world's gold.Initially, traditional mining industry management approaches resulted in the rejection of what appeared to be an attractive low-grade deposit as an uneconomic proposition. Critical re-examination revealed that the rejection was based upon managerial inflexibility and traditionally over-conservative methods of mine evaluation, construction, operation, projected commodity prices and contingency factors. Drainage aids are designed to assist in filter cake dewatering by reduction of surface tension. By the early 1980's severalspecialist chemical manufacturers had developed drainage aids specific to the alumina industry. Thus, after some initial laboratory work, drainage aid addition to the product hydrate filter cake was first tried at Gove in early 1981. Encouraging results led to further plant trials and a laboratory trial comparing eight different products. Fromthis last trial a product was chosen and a plant trial run in March 1982. The results achieved encouraged a further plant trial to be run during April and May, 1982 and a decision was then made to adopt the full-time use of drainage aid on the plant.Optimisation work with the drum filters and drainage aid continued until late 1983. This work not only led to optimisation of dose rates, concentrations etc., but also to significant improvements in the mode of operation of the product filtration area.

It is self evident that in many cases mining disrupts communities, however, community reaction to mining varies enormously. This is due to a whole host of factors, some physical, some financial, some political and some a direct result of the projected mining company attitude towards the community at large. Physical and political factors are increasingly being dealt with realistically and financial aspects are to a significant extent determined by profit margins. If the acceptable profit margin canÆt accommodate all necessary costs (which now includes a variety of community considerations unheard of even a decade ago), then the project is just not viable. Despite major commitments now made by many mining companies to their affected communities, corporate attitudes, and their projection, remain as the most outstanding factor in mining project development where real gains can still be made in effectively reducing social risk. This paper addresses both international and domestic experience gained in managing this aspect of mining development risk, including initiatives implemented by multilateral institutions.

The success of the Australian mining industry depends on the quality of its skills. High quality skills supported by a culture which demands success lead to innovations, good practices and prosperity. Average skills lead inevitably to mediocrity. Universities play an essential role in the development and use of skills but the crucial industry-university links have been subordinated to conventional academic interests in training mining and processing engineers. It is only in the area of post-graduate research degrees which are oriented towards the mineral industry that Australia can claim world leadership. Deficiencies are not due to lack of training resources, they are due to inadequate utilisation of the resources that are available. Australia can and should have the world's best mineral engineering school, with a branch in Asia where many of its customers are and close ties with South America where some of its production operations will be. Some steps which might be taken to achieve this are proposed.

Passing a direct current through a jointed fine grained soft rock mass auses the movement of water by the process of electric-osmosis. There are other processes such as electrolysis which transport ions that interact with associated ions and can, in turn, be oxidised. This results in the dissolution products being transported towards the cathode electrode. In the cathode region the ferrous hydroxide is oxidised to ferric hydroxide %%ith consequent precipitation. The cracks and joints are current pathways, along which the ferric hydroxide is deposited. This deposition reinforces the joints and increases the shear strength. By adding calcium chloride to the anode, the rate of corrosion is increased with the concomitant increase of deposited ferric hydroxide along the joints. This, in turn, significantly increases the joint shear strength. The process is pervasive in that the current via the water paths travels through the crack and joint systems The result is that not only specific joints are reinforced but the cracks and mtciconnected voids are also reinforced.

Mount Isa Mines Limited commissioned the Heavy Medium Plant in August 1982. The first processing stage using Mogensen Sizer 2056 dry screens, experienced unresolvable cloth blinding problems in attempting to separate fine, damp Lead/Zinc ore at 1.7 mm. A large proportion of the fines incorrectly reported to oversize and hence to the wet preparation screens. This wet preparation screen overloading produced multiple operating and maintenance problems. The plant configuration precluded retrofitting any alternative proprietary screen. An internal Mount Isa Mines research and development programme was established to design and build a screen to achieve the required per- formance within the site constraints. The resulting ISA SIZER screen has exceeded metallurgical performance expectations. A `clean sheet' approach to the design also permitted elimination of maintenance difficulties experienced with the Mogensen Sizer. Four `production model' ISA SIZERS were installed in February 1988. The ISA SIZER screen, now fully developed is available commercially and will satisfy many screening plant requirements.

During recent years, Central Queensland has experienced a boom in its coal mining industry. This has involved many companies in projects requiring large capital expenditure. As with most projects of this size, many operating problems are now being experienced which were unforseen at the feasibility stage. One of these problems is the failure of pit slopes and spoil piles at some of the strip mining operations. There have been serious stability problems associated with Utah Development Company's strip mining operations in Central Queensland, in particular the Goonyella Mine. A field investigation programme was under- taken to determine the cause of highwall and spoilpile slope failures. Spoilpile failures were found to result from weakness near the spoil/floor contact zone. Highwall failures were found to result from a combination of unfavourable bedding plane dips and weakness, and the presence of joints in weak o~erburdep; Satisfactory solutions fa the staiity, problems are difficult to formulate, and-field stability experimentation is still at an early Stage.

THIS paper is not intended to be more than a mere outline of the economic geology of Tasmania. It is desired to present in a condensed form the present state of our knowledge in regard to the distribution of the ore, coal, and oil-shale deposits of Tasmania in time and space.Tasmania is exceptionally well endowed with mineral wealth, particularly in the north-western and western districts. In the enthusiasm resulting from the first discoveries of mineral deposits at a great number of localities in those districts, it became a generally accepted belief that the whole of that portion of Tasmania constituted a continuous metalliferous province. As geological research in these, areas has progressed, however, it has become increasingly clear that ore-deposition has been confined on an economic scale to definite well-defined areas or belts which have a genetic relationship to certain tectonic and petrologic phases of the general geology. The interfaces between the Broken Hill ore lenses and the enclosing wallrocks are, on a broad scale, parallel to metamorphic layering in the wallrock gneisses and quartzites. In detail, however, the concordant contacts are interrupted by piercement structures, formed by plastic injection of ore into the wallrocks during metamorphism.These discordant bodies vary from minor projections measuring less than I m long, to major ore shoots ("droppers") as much as 60 m long. The intrusive bodies consist of fragmented ore and wallrock in amatrix of recrystallised sulphides. Wallrock fragments have been altered to manganese-rich and calcium-rich mineral assemblages. The injected ore is enriched in sulphides compared with the parent ore, and there has been enrichment in a number of minor elements.Piercement structures formed during the waning phase of high grade metamorphism, when incompetent ore was injected plastically under pressure into the wallrocks, particularly at fold crests. Adjacent to the "droppers", retrograde schists developed as a result of shearing along the ore-wallrock interface.

The provision of a water supply is a major consideration in planning mining developments particularly in remote areas. The evaluation and development of adequate water supplies in arid areas of Australia is often as important as the discovery of the orebody. The copper orebody at Warrego near Tennant Creek could not be mined economically if cheap treatment water was not available near the mine. This paper describes the difficulties in obtaining water in the Tennant Creek area and the water supply investigations carried out near the Warrego Mine which resulted in the successful discovery and evaluation of a reliable large scale water supply. It is contended that the establishment of a water supply must be approached on a systematic and scientific basis similar to the approach with the exploration and establishment of actual ore reserves. Mining companies with similar water supply problems may benefit by approaching their problem on this basis. The approach adopted by Peko Mines is outlined in this report.
