The Theory of Sampling (TOS) has contributed significantly to chemometrics by allowing data analysts to become more aware of total measurement uncertainty as total sampling error + total analytical error. This has allowed a new view on, for example, validation of multivariate data models and their performance. This keynote focuses mostly on the reverse perspective: how can chemometric multivariate data modelling be of help in an augmented sampling context? The basic principles of multivariate data analysis are presented and application examples are outlined from several areas in the geosciences to facilitate answers to the question posed, including a geochemical multivariate anomaly concept defined by a multivariate background model. Applications from geochemical prospecting, geochemical mapping, environmental chemistry and anthropogenic outlier recognition are outlined, as are the interdependent relationships between geostatistical modelling (variographics) of singular variables versus linear combinations of a multitude of variables, in chemometrics called scores. The potential synergy between chemometrics and TOS is far from exhausted at this time; much work remains.CITATION:Esbensen, K H, 2014. Porphyry Cu-Mo (Au) deposits of southern and western China are localised in ancient arc environments and continental-collision orogenic belts. Despite the contrasting tectonic setting, the known deposit geology and geochemistry appears identical in both. As such, the application of existing ore deposit models to atypical collisional settings suggests that significant potential exists for future discovery of significant porphyry deposits throughout the accreted cratonic blocks of Asia. Computer controlled truck dispatching systems is a newly-developed technical system in surface mines with shovel-truck technology. The real time dispatching criteria, as the core of optimal truck dispatching software, are analysed and a new criterion, complex dispatching criterion, is put forward. Dispatching criteria previously proposed include: 1. `Earliest Loading' (EL) - to assign a truck to the shovel at which the truck can be loaded earliest. 2. `Max Truck' (MT) - to assign a truck to the shovel at which the truck will have the shortest waiting time. 3. `Max Shovel' (MS) - to assign a truck to the shovel which has been waiting for the longest time. 4. `Minimum Saturation Degree' (MSD) - to assign a truck to the shovel at the branch where the truck flow saturation degree is minimum. 5. `Minimum Saturation Degree with Truck Cycle time consideration' (MSDTC) - as the MSD principle, with the truck travel cycle also considered. 6. `Fixed Dispatching' (FIX) - to assign trucks to fixed shovels. A system simulation model has been set up for truck dispatching system analysis. A few surface coal mines have been selected for case studies. Equipment waiting times and shift production of the system are obtained as the main outputs of the model. Simulation results show that each dispatching criterion has its own applicable range, no one can absolutely dominate the others. For example, when under-trucked, EL and MT criterion can obtain higher production than the MS criterion; when over-trucked, it is vice versa; while for MSD criteria, better results can be obtained no matter how the truck numbers fluctuate. From the view point of shovel output balance, large fluctuations occur for EL and MT criteria, while a good balance can be obtained for other criteria. In the light of dynamic change of mining system conditions, a single dispatching criterion is not necessarily reasonable. A complex dispatching criterion has been put forward to seek the complex optimum effect. Taking the advantage of each dispatching criteria, the dispatching result of a complex dispatching criterion dominates over individual dispatching criterion and a comprehensive optimum effect can be reached.

In mining, grade control generally focuses on blasthole sampling and the estimation of ore control block models with little or no attention given to how the materials are being excavated from the ground. In the process of loading trucks, the underlying variability of the individual bucket load will determine the variability of truck payload. Hence, accurate material movement demands a good knowledge of the excavation process and the buckets’ interaction with the environment. However, equipment frequently goes into off-nominal states due to unexpected delays, disturbances or faults. The large amount of such disturbances causes information loss that reduces the statistical power and biases estimates, leading to increased uncertainty in the production. A reliable method that inferences the missing knowledge about the interaction between the machine and the environment from the available data sources, is vital to accurately model the material movement. In this study, a twostep method was implemented that performed unsupervised clustering and then predicted the missing information. The first method is Density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) based spatial clustering which divides the diggers’ and buckets’ positional data into connected loading segments. Clear patterns of segmented bucket dig positions were observed. The second model utilised Gaussian process regression which was trained with the clustered data and the model was then used to infer the mean locations of the test clusters. Bucket dig locations were then simulated at the inferred mean locations for different durations and compared against the known bucket dig locations. This method was tested at an open pit mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The experimental results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method in inferencing the missing information of bucket-environment interactions and therefore enables miners to continuously track the material movement.

Mill operators have traditionally been forced to rely on grade-recovery curves and overall flotation rate constants when analysing proposed improvements to plants. This has led to loss in money and time when a proposed change that showed potential in laboratory scale tests failed to show improvement in the plant. Frequently, this is a result of the operators being unable to gain insight into how and why the proposed change affected the flotation performance. This is due to the classical models not including any description of the subprocesses of flotation and their individual contribution to the overall flotation performance. A new flotation model has been developed as part of the AMIRA P9 project that separates the flotation process into subprocesses and includes the contribution of both the pulp phase and froth phase to the overall flotation recovery. It is not possible to determine the individual components of this new model on traditional pilot plants as they lack the required flexibility and scale. Therefore a new pilot plant has been developed known as the Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR) that has the flexibility and features required for the determination of the flotation subprocesses. The flexibility and features of the FCTR also make it an ideal tool for investigations into many different aspects of flotation research. These include the effect of reagents, grinding, and power on the flotation performance. This paper will describe the methodology for using the FCTR in these fields of research and highlights the advantages of using the FCTR over traditional methods.

Geological heterogeneity is one dimension of complexity in mining. Significant effort is put into developing an understanding of this complexity so it can be used in resource estimation, mine planning and economic modelling. However, over the decadal lifespan of a mining venture, many other dimensions add to the complexity of a mining operation. These include: technological evolution, market fluctuations; investor confidence; social norms; local expectations; and ecosystem functionality. As with geology, these factors are all heterogeneous, uncertain, time varying and represented through sparse and incomplete datasets. Recent work (Valenta et al) is beginning to show us how these risks correlate in different global settings. By analysing data relating to known, but as yet undeveloped copper deposits, this work (the complex ore body database) is demonstrating that it is the combination of issues (both price sensitive and non price-sensitive) that determine the viability of a deposit for extraction in the 21st century.CITATION: Littleboy, A, Plint, N and Valenta, R, 2018. Vitrinite of humic source (often designated as vitrinite A) is the maceral by which the rank of a coal ought to be determined. Therefore its recognition, and the precise identification of other vitrinites is essential. The majority of Australian petrologists are not differentiating between the vitrinite group macerals in maturation studies, the results of which have led to unexplained phenomena in coal characterisations and evaluation, such as 'reactive inertinites' and inaccurate predictions in petroleum source rock studies. The Callide coal has been chosen as a case study, with examples from other coals. The coal seams from the Callide Coal Measures show variation in the predominance of some macerals, indicating successions of environmental changes. The application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to the study of the Callide coal has enabled a better understanding of the nature and origin of some of the less understood macerals such as micrinite and vitrinite B. Two forms of vitrinite have been observed, each with a distinct reflectance range. The wood-sourced vitrinite A displays an average reflectance of 0.56 per cent, and a range of 05. - 0.7, implying a higher rank than the 0.49 per cent Ro total vitrinite reflectance recorded in previous publications. Vitrinite B is one of the most commonly-occurring macerals in the Callide coal. The lower-reflecting vitrinite B which forms bands, often several hundred microns in thickness, in TEM appears to be electron transparent lipid rich. Vitrinite B is interpreted to represent accumulations of leaves, and is believed to be a major source of hydrocarbons in Australian sedimentary basins. The Callide coal has entered the oil window, and oil has been generated from some exinite, cutinite, and resinite, as evident from the amber to light brown fluorescence of exinite and the presence of exsudatinite in cell cavities and cleats. However vitrinite B, the major potential source of oil, is seen under the microscope to be generating oil, thus placing this coal at the top of the oil window. Micrinite, the origin of which has been much debated, occurs as cell filling or infill of spaces between laminations in vitrinite B.

The Porgera Gold Mine, west of Mt Hagen in PNG is a large open pit and underground operation currently producing gold at the rate of almost one million ounces per year. This deposit has produced some 8.8 million ounces to-date and has current reserves of 103.4 million tonnes @3.2 g/t Au. The Porgera Joint Venture has invested over $A1 billion in infrastructure in this project. Technical management of this operation involves the interrogation of some 700 000 metres of diamond drilling, some 50 000 blastholes per year, and very large volumes of laboratory, geotechnical, environmental and production reporting data. Over the past seven years this data has been consolidated into a single centralised, relational database which now acts as the single reference point for all the technical application systems used for surveying, grade control, production reporting, deposit evaluation and modelling. Data transfer to application programs and management systems is controlled by the centralised database, this process at times involving a two-way, real-time, binary data transfer. The benefits of a specialised database application include security and integrity of the data asset, ease of access, and performance in a multi-user environment. This replaced fragmented, inconsistent data sets stored inefficiently as individual, unindexed, variably formatted files associated with the different application programs. Most importantly, the database has allowed mine management at all levels to make timely, confident investment, cash flow and optimisation decisions as it provides the primary link between the deposit and operational data sets on one hand, and the application programs and management and performance measurement systems on the other. This paper discusses the economic value and importance of technical data in terms of the resource asset and the means by which this data is being managed and used at Porgera.

Much of AucklandÆs transport infrastructure has been developed on surface with little or no consideration of underground options. Current and planned transportation routes are now facing high costs due to land values and increasing environmental resistance to surface development. The option of utilising underground space becomes a feasible investment decision for these links as well as being the only option to develop the rail network within the inner city area. Transportation tunnels offer a quieter, more energy efficient means of getting around with minimal impacts on the surface environment. One of the major impediments to tunnelling is the high construction cost, which is partly related to the risks of encountering unexpected ground conditions and/or the possibility of causing surface ground deformations which could damage structures. The geology of Auckland has had substantial investigation through various studies and projects. The sediments of the East Coast Bays Formation (ECBF) underlie most of the Auckland urban area. It is classified as a soft rock and is a suitable material to tunnel through using either a tunnel boring machine or a roadheader. This paper reviews the limited amount of tunnelling completed in the urban Auckland area, together with the international advancements that have been made in the tunnelling industry. From the known features of the local geology and the problems encountered historically, the likely risks of tunnelling in Auckland are presented and ways in which those risks could be reduced and managed, are discussed. In addition, contractual arrangements between client and contractor are assessed with respect to complicated projects (such as tunnelling), so that the risks can be managed to create efficient infrastructure routes with reduced costs.

Numerous Fe-Cu-Au-rare earth element (REE) deposits have been identified within the Palaeoproterozoic Dongchuan Group of the Kangdian region of SW China. Geochronologic and geochemical data of the dolerite dykes and other volcanic rocks reveal extensional activity occurred about 1.7 Ga called ‘Kunyang Rifting’. The Kangdian region underwent variable degrees of extension, meaning that breakup in the central part of this region occurred earlier than in the north. Research on microphysiography, isotopic geochemistry and inclusions of the Yinachang typical Fe-Cu-Au-REE deposits suggest that the dominant mineralisation fluid is high-temperature, high-salinity magma fluid, containing alkalic components, volatile phase and Cu-Au. Metasomatism and mixing between this magmatic fluid and carbonaceous wall rock and meteoric water caused the precipitation of Fe, REEs and Cu-Au. A chalcopyrite Re-Os age from the Yinachang deposit obtained during this study is some 50–100 million years younger than the timing of emplacement of the deeply sourced Haizi and Dongchuan dolerites. The Yinachang deposit is a typical iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG)-type deposit, and the presence of this and other deposits in the Kangdian region indicates that the region hosts an intraplate extension-related IOCG system within the western edge of the Yangtze Block, China.CITATION:Hou, L, Ding, J, Zhang, J R, Zhu, S B, Wu, S Y and Peng, H J, 2015. There are two discrete aspects to collecting portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) data to obtain reliable results and to comply with reporting requirements under the 2012 edition of the JORC Code (JORC, 2012) – sampling method and quality assurance. A robust sampling program is required to obtain representative material for analysis. The appropriate method should be established for a particular project using a small orientation study. A variety of approaches to sampling soils, drill cuttings, rock faces and diamond drill core are discussed. These include using multiple spot analyses, scanning using a single operating beam and the collection of cutting saw pulps. The operator must also be aware of the attenuating effects of analysing through sample bags of different material types for various elements as well as the limitations of current pXRF instruments in reporting reliable data for certain elements. The analysis of the samples must also be accompanied by a quality assurance program in order to generate data that are ‘fit for purpose’. This includes recording X-ray tube resolution on a routine basis, using matrix-appropriate standards for which total elemental concentrations are available, using silica blanks, capturing sufficient duplicate analyses to constrain data precision and obtaining check assays to calibrate pXRF data against laboratory data. Examples of quality control approaches and data are presented. Table 1 of the 2012 JORC Code also recommends that information on instrument make and model, reading times and calibration be provided in any reporting of pXRF data. To this should be added information on operating mode and temperature, software version and moisture content of the samples. A robust sampling methodology with a suitable quality assurance/quality control program should produce pXRF data of sufficient quality for public reporting purposes, provided that the data are presented using appropriate cautionary language and adequate supporting information.CITATION:Arne, D C and Jeffress, G M, 2014. A chemical study of the petrographic components of Greta (Maitland) coal, carried out by the Metropolitan Gas Co. (Melbourne), has revealed an anomaly in the composition of the durain which was thought to warrant petrological investigation.The original study, by the Metropolitan Gas Co., extended over eight shipments of coal received during the winter of 1943.The percentages of the several petrographic components were eslimated by careful handpicking of large samples of each shipment, and analyses were made of the handpicked components, which were also tested as to their gas-making and coking properties.The results are summarised in Tables 1 and 2. At first sight the components of the Greta coal bear a general resemblance in composition to those of other bituminous coals of similar rank, apart from a notable richness in volatiles, which is a distinctive feature of Greta coal. The durain has a typically higher ash content, and lower volatile content than the clarain (Table 1); and the coking behaviour of the four components is typical (Fig. 4).When, however, the analyses of Table 1 are re-calculated on a dry, ash-free basis, an anomaly appears: the clarain and the durain, on this 'pure coal' basis, have practically identical compositions, with the durain containing a slightly higher proportion of volatiles than the clarain (cf. Table 3); but the tar yield of these two components is very different (Table 1). Re-calculated on a dry, ash-free basis, the yield from the clarain is 18.9 gallons of tar per ton, while, that of the durain is 29.0 gallons per ton. The gas derived from the durain is correspondingly richer in illuminants (CH etc) and poorer in hydrogen than that from the clarain (Table 2), and is also notably richer in nitrogen.That the composition of the Greta durain is consistent is proved by the analyses of Table 3, in which the compositions of the respective durains and clarains of eight separate shipments of coal are compared. In most bituminous coals, the durain contains several per cent less volatile matter than the associated clarain, and high volatile content in a durain usually indicates a durain rich in spores.

Is the Northern Territory different? Certainly it is more remote, has less people and relies more heavily on two or three industries for its survival. On the other hand, its mining industry is governed by Acts not dissimilar to those of the major States - a Mining Act provides the basis for acquisition of tenure, a Mine Management Act provides regulatory control, a Mineral Royally Act collects revenue in return for the right to utilise the land's bounties, an Environmental Assessment Act provides the public face to rehabilitation and environmental safety, and the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act purports to give development criteria for inalienable land use. With the exception of the latter, at least until the advent of Mabo, all these are simply variations on a theme, and are common to most States. This paper will show how the Department of Mines and Energy works in relation to the Northern Territory mining industry.

The difficulty in fine particle flotation has been attributed, among other things, to a low bubble-particle collision efficiency. Many technologies have been developed which aim at increasing bubble-particle collision efficiency, either by generating micro bubbles or by enlarging particle sizes. However, commercial applications of these technologies are limited. Over the last five years COREM has been actively testing fine particle froth flotation technologies with the objective of commercialisation. Several fine particle flotation technologies, such as dissolved air flotation, electro-flotation, floc flotation, selective flocculation-flotation and carrier flotation, were tested on both single minerals and ore samples in order to identify the reasons that prevented these technologies from being used on a commercial scale. It was found that the two most noticeable factors that prevented the successful application of these technologies were: Mechanical entrainment of fine gangue minerals. This was a general problem in fine particle flotation, but was aggravated by these technologies that either generated micro bubbles or enlarged the sizes of hydrophobic particles. Oxidation of (sulfide) minerals that resulted in hydrophilic oxidation product coatings. The oxidised fine particles could not be recovered by these fine particle flotation technologies effectively. Solutions to the two problems, ie gangue entrainment and fine particle oxidation, were proposed and tested. It seems that polymeric depressants with both depression and flocculation functions could significantly reduce gangue entrainment, and hydrophilic surfaces of oxidised fine particles could be modified by high intensity conditioning or controlled sulfidisation, thus increasing the recoveries of fine valuable minerals. The improved fine valuable particle flotation and reduced fine gangue entrainment along with fine particle flotation technologies resulted in much improved flotation separation of fine particles.

Extensive gold mining activity û dominantly alluvial û has taken place in the Sofala-Wattle Flat district since the 1850s.This work will have located most, if not all, of the visible sources for the gold in current stream systems.Also, there are many gold bearing elevated Tertiary alluvial terraces in the district which may confuse possible gold signals from primary hard rock sources in the streams.Associated element signatures eg As and other chalcophiles, will discriminate non-alluvial signatures but will not necessarily distinguish non gold bearing mineralisation.Both trace elements and conventional gold analyses will dominantly re-identify known occurrences. Conventional BCL sampling is considered misleading as experience from the Oberon area to the south of Sofala demonstrated that BCL sampling was very sensitive û perhaps too sensitive.All occurrences û major or minor û of gold will be detected (Gatehouse, 1992). To improve on BCL sampling, a small, -120# sample with selective duplication was recommended to screen coarse-grained gold anomalism and a program of sampling covering an area thought to be prospective was enacted.Samples returning anomalous Au were analysed in duplicate and if the results demonstrated reproducibility, indicating fine gold only, the sample site was assigned a high priority.It was found that most of the reproducible samples clustered in one area û Spring Gully. The results of this sampling program led to immediate identification and, ultimately, the successful delineation of the Spring Gully gold deposit near Wattle Flat.

Morro Agudo is an underground zinc and lead mine owned by Nexa Resources. The mine uses room and pillar as the main mining method. The recovery of pillars as well as the opening of new excavations using sublevel stoping as mining method has been studied. On some occasions, the need to recover pillars and open a stope by using the sublevel method happens in a region that is already excavated or in deeper areas than those mined so far. These changes represent a major geotechnical challenge due to the complex openings of the mine and interaction between two different mining methods. Historically, geotechnical mapping, kinematic analysis and a 2D numerical model were used to evaluate the new mine openings, and in 2021, 3D numerical model was introduced, which enabled global and local assessment of new excavations impact and the stability of openings after recoveries. The 3D model, made with MAP3D, is used to evaluate each pillar to be recovered, considering the spans of the resulting openings, the ideal sequencing of removal to maintain stability, in addition to the impact and geometry of the pillars left in the chambers. Pillar recoveries done in 2021 and the impact of it on the pillars left were the sources of the back analysis to calibrate parameters inputted on numerical model to assess recovery on new chambers and Phyllite has been considered into the model and it has been a source of instability due to its parallel position to roof of room and pillars and stope hanging walls.

As demands for mineral resources continue to rise, mining companies are under increasing pressure to address environmental impacts, minimise waste generation, and optimise resource utilisation. These challenges underscore the importance of Research and Development (R&D) roadmaps as strategic tools for guiding innovation and sustainability efforts within the sector (Jochen Berbner, 2022). A design-led methodology offers a structured approach to R&D roadmap development, emphasising stakeholder engagement, collaboration, and alignment with industry objectives. By leveraging design principles, mining companies can ensure that their R&D initiatives are responsive to evolving challenges and opportunities, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Against this backdrop, the project aims to address the pressing challenges associated with sustainability and circular economy in the mining industry. Through the development of R&D roadmaps and the application of a design-led methodology, the project seeks to identify innovative solutions for enhancing resource efficiency, minimising environmental impacts, and promoting sustainable practices within mining operations. This paper highlights the collaborative efforts among Isle, the mining industry, and water utilities, which have yielded tangible benefits. The study demonstrates how the outcomes from the roadmaps outlined below effectively align research with strategic objectives, fostering innovation to address pressing challenges.

As the surrounding environment continues to change and evolve, mine managers face a changing climate of expectations. TodayÆs mine managers must juggle competing pressures to deliver sound social, environmental and economic results. Leadership is a fundamental tool for the effective mine manager. Whilst mine managers require solid technical and operational skills, importantly the manager must be able to engage a workforce, build and retain employees and seize opportunity for growth and development when presented. An important tool for engaging employees in the business at Rio Tinto Aluminium is the business improvement programme. At Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs Weipa mine, the business improvement methodology Six Sigma is used to deliver measurable, sustainable outcomes for the business. The next step in Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs improvement journey is to implement Lean Manufacturing at all managed operations. The operating environment for mine managers continuously evolves and effective mine managers must be flexible and adaptive to meet challenges. Governance and regulation constantly change in an environment of commodity cycles and finite resources. This increases pressure on the economic return achieved by the operation. As such, effective mine managers must be aware of and manage the operating environment û the broader, issues-based environment not just the immediate day-to-day responsibility of mine managing. This includes delivering on safety, community and environmental priorities. At Rio Tinto Aluminium, part of managing the business is via investment in the area of social partnerships to engage employees and the broader community in Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs commitment to sustainability. The Future Reef partnership entered with the Great Barrier Reef Research Foundation in 2005 forms an important part of Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs climate change strategy. This four-year, A$1 million investment funds programmes looking at the effect of ocean acidification on the Great Barrier Reef. The partnership is a unique example of industry and science working together on an area of mutual and national concern. Modern mine managers require a broad set of skills to effectively deliver outcomes. TodayÆs mine managers must make innovative and courageous responses to determine todayÆs strategy for tomorrowÆs future.

The mining industry has been rightly proud of its environmental achievements and it would be fair to say that in some areas the Australian mining industry is at the forefront of world practice in environmental management and mine rehabilitation. The `environment' has certainly been a growth area over the past three decades with growing awareness in the 1960s, some large battles and the of significant legislation in the 1970s. The most important period however has been the 1980s and so far the 1990s where, in addition to the of some more rigorous legislation, we have seen the practical application of environmental management/rehabilitation Techniques.

In order to assess whether polysaccharide depressants are strongly or weakly and reversibly bound to the surface of talc, a series of experiments was conducted on New York talc in which the floatability of the talc in a microflotation cell was determined. The talc was conditioned in solutions of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) or guar gum in 10-2 ionic strength Ca(NO3)2 or Mg(NO3)2. The talc was then washed with four successive aliquots of water, or cation solution, to try to remove the polymer and the flotation response of the talc was assessed. CMCs of different charge (DS) were used to assess the effect of charge on the strength of bonding. The results show that CMC and guar gum could be removed to a large extent from the talc surface by washing with water (the floatability was restored), however very little could be removed from the surface by washing with cation solution. The higher charge CMC was easier to remove from the talc planes in the absence of cations than the lower charge CMC. Thus CMC bonding to talc has been shown to be irreversible or very slowly reversible only if cations are present, implying that cations are necessary to keep the polymer bound to the surface of the planes to effect depression. The presence of ions in solution also had the effect of maintaining surface coverage of the talc by guar gum.
