Mines are often located in remote areas that are not well served by æstiffÆ power grids. Radial transmission networks, high lightning incidence (eg in South Africa the Witwatersrand experiences seven to ten strikes/km2 per year), low short circuit strengths and diesel generation are not uncommon. All these factors result in the electric power supply to many mines being unusually prone to dips and disturbances. æLegacyÆ winder drives û cyclo converters and dc drives û convert power directly from the supply to the motor, with no intermediate energy storage element. Further, they rely on the supply network for commutation and are therefore sensitive to supply voltage disturbances. There is a high probability that a dc or cyclo mine winder will trip during a supply disturbance, often resulting in lost production time and call-outs for technical staff to reset or even repair equipment. In contrast, a voltage source inverter (VSI) ac drive stores a large quantity of energy (in the dc link capacitors) and is fully self-commutating. Hence, this topology is inherently more immune to supply voltage disturbances. Indeed, vendors of ac VSI mine winders make general statements about the superior performance of their drives during supply disturbances. However, the advantages have apparently not been previously quantified. This paper compares different winder drive topologies and their sensitivity to supply disturbances, considers categories of supply disturbances and quantifies the cost of the effects on the different drive types.

In a recently completed AMIRA project, 20 samples were searched for gold mineralisation using the automated location facility (ALF) for rare phases on a scanning electron microscope in the CSIRO Division of Mineral Products, Melbourne. The samples were submitted by mining companies in Australia, and Papua New Guinea, and included crushed ore samples, cyclone overflow and underflow products, a flotation concentrate, and 12 tailing samples. Their gold contents ranged from 600 to 0.2 g/t An. Native gold and gold minerals including a gold telluride, gold-silver tellurides, and a gold bismuth mineral, were located in the samples as free grains and associated with other minerals such as pyrite, magnetite, hematite, ankerite, copper sulphides, silicate minerals, and quartz. In the highest grade samples, both micron sized and 200 ¦m grains of gold were found with ALF. It would be difficult to locate such d wide size range of gold in a manual search. Gold mineralisation was located in the tailing samples assaying 0.4 g/t An and higher. In several tailing samples coarse grains of native gold over 40 p.m in size were located. One grain was estimated to have contributed 40 per cent of the gold in the sample. As well as locating gold mineralisation, the ALF examination resulted in the identification of uranium, mercury, and bismuth minerals in the samples. Knowledge of the distribution of these minerals in processing streams could be important in the operation of a concentrator.

Scaling in Bayer Refineries is a natural consequence of the super-saturated liquors used in the process. The caustic liquor is supersaturated not only with alumina but also silica and calcia at various stages of the process. The basic scaling mechanisms are reviewed and examples of the two basic types, growth and settled scales, are given. Examples include gibbsite scales formed in the precipitators and silica scales formed in heat exchangers. The main factors affecting the rate of growth of growth scales are temperature and supersaturation and are highlighted using a silica scale example. For growth scales chemical cleaning rates can readily be predicted from kinetics and an example for a gibbsite scale is given. For settled scales the growth rate cannot be predicted and the hydrodynamics within the system have most effect. There is no simple method to predict the potential for chemical cleaning of settled scales; some of the relevant issues are discussed, in particular methods to identify the cementing phase in the scale. The application of photogeological techniques and analysis of more advanced remote sensor images can be a cost and time effective tool in the search for desert placer gold deposits. Examples are given of regional analysis using standard false color composit Landsat images and conventional black and white aerial photography. The examples include identification of sites to sample to evaluate the pathways of .alluvial gold migration and identification of potential sites of concentration. The results of these studies developed an increased number of target areas and exploration in proceeding with promising results. In addition to the development of additional target concepts and identification of specific target areas data useful to evaluation of mineability can also be obtained from photogeological investigation. Some indication at least can be obtained of the existence of duricrusts and salines that may hamper mining. Identification of possible sources of water is another important task in the desert environment. In addition indications of the clay content of the material to be worked is very important because of its economic impact on operational costs and overall recovery. The application of photogeology to these questions is discussed.

One of the challenges in the development of mineral processing simulators is modelling the liberation characteristics of particles produced by comminution circuits. Understanding the mineral characteristics of these particles is one of the keys to predicting their behaviour in separation circuits. While more fundamental research seeks to model the non-random breakage of ores this work examines whether we can move forward now by using observed characteristics of ores to model the composition of particles generated in comminution processes. Several researchers have noted the similarity of the liberation characteristics for a selected size fraction of particulate material, whether the fraction comes from a coarse material, such as the product from a jaw crusher, or a more finely ground material, such as the product from a ball mill. In most cases these observations were reported as an aside and were not the main focus of the published work. This observed behaviour has the potential to be a useful tool for modelling the particle characteristics in mineral comminution and separation circuits, particularly as we move towards the development of multi-component models. However, before the behaviour can be used widely we need to understand which ore types follow the observed pattern and which do not. The current work examines a range of ores and identifies which exhibit the pattern of similarity of composition for particles in a given size class that has been produced as the result of a variety of breakage conditions. The impact of mineralogy and texture on the evolution of liberation characteristics for both valuable and gangue minerals is discussed.

The Olympic Dam copper-uranium-gold-silver deposit, located 520 km NNW of Adelaide, S.A. was discovered by Western Mining Corporation Ltd in 1975, and is now being developed as a joint venture between WMC (5107o) and the BP Group (4907o). The discovery of this deposit resulted from the application of a conceptual model for the formation of sediment-hosted copper deposits. This model postulated that the oxidation of basaltic rocks could release significant amounts of copper into solution and that, under favourable conditions, these solutions might pass upwards along faults, and the copper be precipitated in reduced- facies sediments higher in the sequence. The Stuart Shelf province was chosen for exploration because geological interpretation suggested the presence of suitable basal- tic source rocks at depth, and favourable host sedimentary rocks in the overlying sequence. The Olympic Dam site was selected for drill-testing because of the presence of coincident gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies suggesting the presence of basalts and/or mineralisation at depth. This site also had a favourable tectonic signature, indicating the presence of deep crustal structures which might have allowed fluid migration.

The Callie Underground Gold Mine (Callie) is owned by Newmont Asia Pacific and located 531 km north-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Historically, stopes have been mined utilising a primary and secondary stoping sequence with cemented aggregate fill and rock fill respectively. Current and near-future mining will employ long hole open stoping with rib pillars and rock fill with a paste fill system approved to allow a higher extraction ratio from mid-2011. The Callie rock mass is of good quality with little or no mining difficulties during development and stoping to a depth of 1140 m below surface. Development is currently occurring at depth of 1360 m below surface. Stress damage previously observed only in secondary stope accesses is now observed in development unaffected by stoping stresses. A change in rock mass properties is being experienced with depth, with more pronounced and frequent joint planes. Also, other structures are intersected more commonly, such as lithological boundaries and fault zones. The 'Callie rock factory' mentality that has persisted for years is challenged. This paper covers an appraisal of the stress and ground condition changes at Callie. The appraisal outlines the mine design criterion that was developed and examines the transition from a low stress environment to one where stress damage is observed. Discussion includes a judgement on the rock mass damage observed in development, the dominant geotechnical factors influencing the change in ground conditions, and if a correlation can be made between the observed rock mass damage with stress through the use of numerical modelling.

The technology of coal preparation, while based on similar processes to those in common useage in the 1950s, has improved significantly over the past 15 years primarily due to advances in process control. This technology at least offers the potential for most coal preparation unit operations to be optimised to a considerable degree. However, to maximise the overall yield of an operation from pit to port, factors often outside of the control of the preparation plant operator have a dominant effect. Specific factors include an in depth knowledge of the feed characteristics of the various sources of coal, the detailed mine scheduling to provide an appropriate blend to the plant, and the interim handling and stockpiling processes between the mine face and the customer.This paper summarises the criteria for optimising the yield for a variety of mining, processing and stockpiling options, based on the principle of operating at constant incremental ash. Pragmatic operating assumptions such as extension of the principle to operating at a constant density for gravity operations will be discussed. A means of optimising the compromise between maintaining specification product ash to the customer and maximising yield by always washing at constant incremental ash, without the benefit of a homogenised feed, will also be Presented.

An investigation was carried out at a US underground mine to characterise diesel aerosols and to asses the effects of various control technologies on the concentrations and properties of particulate matter and gases emitted by heavy-duty diesel-powered equipment. This study was dedicated to evaluating the impact on mine air quality of contemporary diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems installed on mining equipment. Additional efforts were made to assess the effect of blended biodiesel fuels, yellow grease and soy, ultra-low sulfur fuel, a fuel emulsion and of selected diesel oxidation catalysts on air quality and emissions. The carbon analysis performed on the collected samples showed that the tested DPF systems reduced the mass concentrations of elemental carbon in mine air by between 70 per cent and 92 per cent. In addition, TEOM measurements, collected during these tests, showed that the total diesel particulate matter concentration in the mine air was reduced by greater than 65 per cent when DPF systems were used. The tested biodiesel blends were found to reduce elemental carbon concentrations in the mine air by between 49 per cent and 33 per cent, for the B20 (20 per cent biodiesel/80 per cent #2 diesel) of soy and yellow grease respectively and between 66 per cent and 56 per cent for the B50 (50 per cent biodiesel/50 per cent #2 diesel) of soy and yellow grease, respectively. The water-in-diesel fuel emulsion was shown to reduce elemental carbon concentrations by as much as 85 per cent. NO2 measurements showed an increase in the maximum concentrations of NO2 when catalysed DPF systems were used instead of mufflers.

In recent years there have been significant developments in the tech- nology available for blast monitoring, analysis and simulation. Progress in these areas has been achieved through research conducted by explo- sives manufacturers and independent research groups from universities and mining companies. Miners are increasingly keen to exploit this tech- nology to help them design blasts which make optimum use of explo- sives to produce easily excavated muckpiles for the minimum possible cost. The art of blast design in the future will increasingly depend on an adequate understanding of the nature of the rock mass, the perfor- mance of explosives and the characteristics required of the muckpile to suit the chosen excavation machinery. Despite recent advances in blast simulation and the prediction of blasting performance, the best way to determine how a particular explosive will function relative to other explosives is to conduct properly designed and monitored field trials. This paper discusses recent work at Mount Thorley Colliery which demonstrates that field blasting trials can be monitored and analysed to provide quantitative data on the relative performance of bulk explosives. Techniques used in the trials included the sampling and analysis of explo- sives, insitu measurement of VOD, monitoring of near and far field vibra- tions, high speed and still photography and survey measurement of muckpiles. These techniques provided data for the analysis of throw, swell, fragmentation and burden movement together with data on the consistency and robustness of different explosive products. The blasting trials allowed both the shock and heave energy of various explosives to be observed in the field and led to the derivation of design rules for the use of differ- ent explosives at the mine.

Ironstone outcrops on the Savage River were discovered by State Government Surveyor C. P. Sprent in 1877. The limonitic outcrops were initially regarded as the surface expressions of pos- sible tin-bearing lodes, the tin deposits at Mt. Bischoff to the east having been found in 1871. By the turn of the century, shafts, adits and trenches had been developed on the deposits in the unsuccessful quest for gold, silver and base metals. The deposits were first reported as a possible source of iron ore by Tasmania Department of Mines (TDM) geologists in 1919. Modern exploration began in 1956 with the area registering the best magnetic response during an aeromagnetic survey of North- western Tasmania by the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR). The area had previously been reserved by TDM in anticipation of the lifting of the iron ore embargo. Reconnaissance Geologi- cal mapping (TDM) and grid-based magnetometer surveys (BMR) indicated that resources of iron-bearing material could approach hundreds of millions of tons. The Cosmo Project falls within the Archaean to Palaeo-Proterozoic Pine Creek Orogen, one of the major mineral provinces of Australia.The Cosmo Deposit is interpreted to be a series of steep north-west-plunging gold mineralised vein, breccia and shear systems within the tight Howley Anticline and hosted within interbedded siltstones, mudstones, banded iron, phyllites, dolerite sills and greywacke.A folded environment poses a number of technical challenges, particularly for estimation.Handling of tightly folded and in some cases narrow domains might include subdomaining for orientation, omni-directional three-dimensional (3D) estimation within constrained domains or software-enabled unfolding/un-wrinkling procedures (transformation of the data and estimate space into a two-dimensional environment). Each technique has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages.A further method (one applied at Cosmo) is where the estimation parameters (specifically search and variography orientation) are modified in a frequent or ‘dynamic’ sense to suit the orientation of the domain whilst maintaining 3D space. Control of the resource estimation orientation can be done in several ways, including the use of sectional panels of a specific size or, alternatively, orientation sector divisions. The sector approach provides some significant reductions in processing time over the panel technique and could be applied in a number of software packages.Three-dimensional ‘dynamic’ interpolation reconciles well with production data from Cosmo, whilst the sector method provides a practical technique that can be executed without the complications of transformation or the need for labour-intensive orientation subdomaining and with acceptable resource estimation run time.CITATION:Finch, A and Pridmore, C, 2014. MOUNT STEWART is situated half a mile south of Leadville railway station, which is distant 240 miles by rail from Sydney via Mudgee. It forms a low ridge from which rock waste and alluvium slope gradually to the black-soil flats of the Coolaburragundy River. The Mt. Stewart mine comprises:(a) The Mt. Stewart workings in M.L. 44, parish Talbragar, Co. Bligh.(b) The Grosvenor workings in M.Ls. 44 and 45, parish Talbragar, Co. Bligh.(c) The Extended workings in M.L. 44, parish Talbragar, Co. Bligh.The workings contain 1375 ft.. of vertical shafts, 1105 ft. of underlay shafts, 800 ft. of rises and winzes, 8520 ft. of drives and crosscuts, and 18,000 ft. of stapes.The mine was first opened in 1888 as a silver-lead mine, and a waterjacketed furnace was erected during 18B2. The furnace was installed with two internally-fired tubular boilers of 35 h.p. and 25 h.p. respectively, and two Baker's rotary pressure blowers. The results of the smelting campaign indicate that, during 14 months, a total of 15,000 tons of ore were treated, yielding silver and lead. It has been a generally held concept that crushing operations were, by their nature, too simple to benefit from the implementation of advanced process control. The commissioning of an OCS¬ expert control system and image-based oversize detection system, VisioRock, at the Pilbara Iron Tom Price facility are dispelling these notions. A constraint-based OCS¬ expert control system has been designed and commissioned on the high-grade crushing and screening plant along with a vision-based oversize detection system functioning on six product conveyor belts. To date, the expert control has demonstrated the ability to increase production by maximising dynamic constraint utilisation. Dynamic constraint utilisation is a concept developed by Rio Tinto Technical Services for effectively evaluating constraint-based control logic performance. The VisioRock system has been installed and configured and has been operating for a period of several months. Currently, Tom Price and Metso personnel are working to define correct oversize detection thresholds. Details of the plant implementation are discussed.

The 5.6 km Canning Tunnel was constructed to improve water supply from Canning Dam to the Perth metropolitan area. The site area is in the Darling Range which is essentially a laterite-capped plateau-remnant underlain by Archaean granitic rocks, intruded by dolerite. Two arrangements were available. After geotechnical investigations which included geological mapping, seismic refraction geo- physics, diamond drilling and mechanical rock testing, a single tunnel was selected in pre- ference to two short tunnels and a connecting pipeline. The tunnel is hydraulically equivalent to a fully lined tunnel 1.83 m in diameter and 5 580 m long. The alignment diverged from a straight line so that the initial upstream section was almost normal to the contours which allowed for minimal support requirements in a weathered zone. Although steel and con- crete lining was needed at both ends, the main section of the tunnel was unlined except for a concrete floor. A sand and rock trap with a capacity of 46 m3 was constructed near the outlet portal to collect debris and sand down to a size of about 2 mm. Portal excavations were in highly to completely weathered rock which extended 56 m into the tunnel at the upstream end, and 18 m at the downstream end. There is an increasing trend in the extraction and development of copper resources from complex deposits. These deposits pose mineral processing challenges, as they often contain low grade disseminated copper ore with high levels of impurities particularly arsenic. Although arsenic is a naturally occurring element, the concentrations of arsenic can be magnified by mining and mineral processing activities. Therefore, while arsenic has no significant market value, its presence in the ore deposit will have production, environmental and human health implications. Lichens are a symbiosis of fungi and algae. Air borne elements and gases are absorbed very efficiently over the entire surface of the lichen, because they have no protective structures such as a waxy cuticle or stomata. A survey in 1977 (one year before the Sudbury Regreening program began), indicated that several Cladonia spp had invaded the soil in Sudbury’s open birch woodlands. Pollution sensitive species such as Cladonia rangiferina and C. mitis occurred 20–25 km from the smelters. It was anticipated that the improvements in air quality and reclamation efforts would allow a natural invasion of pollution sensitive species into what once was a lichen desert that surrounded the smelters. The purpose of this project was to study the invasion of terricolous (soil-inhabiting) communities of lichens and mosses on reclaimed land in the Sudbury region 45 years after commencement of the Sudbury Regreening Program.

ABSTRACT- I Results are given for a series of tests in which a 300 mm pilot-scale Jameson cell has been used in copper recleaner flotation, and for the flotation of a lead rougher feed. the results indicate that the production rate of solids, at the same superficial air velocity Jg, is higher than in conventional columns. Thus in the copper recleaner application, the pulling rate reached 14 gm/cm2/min compared with between two and three for an operating column, while in the lead cleaner application the comparable figures were 12 - 14 gm/cm2/min for the Jameson cell vs 8 - 9 gm/cm2/min for a test column. A froth crowder was used to increase the air superficial velocity Jg in the Jameson cell in the copper recleaner, while holding the collection mechanism and pulp feed rates constant. The recovery increased from 50 per cent to over 90 per cent, suggesting that recovery is controlled mainly by the froth conditions, rather than the particle-bubble interactions in the Downcomer.
