"The Dome Mine, located in South Porcupine Ont. has been in operation since 1910 and is owned and operated by Placer Dome Inc. The current milling facilities were constructed in two phases with the first being commissioned in 1982. It consists of a grinding, gravity separation, thickening, and leaching circuits. The second phase was commissioned in 1988 with the addition of the CIP, stripping, electrowinning, and carbon regeneration circuits.It is now common practice in the gold processing community to add liquid oxygen to leach circuits to increase both recovery and kinetics. Along with these benefits the metallurgical group at the Dome realized the potential to replace compressed air with liquid oxygen as a source of oxygen for the dissolution of gold. A plant trial of liquid oxygen was undertaken during the fall of 1991. The results of this first test were favourable enough to warrant further investigation, and a second plant trial was conducted in December 1991.The data generated as a result of each trial revealed that oxygen could be economically substituted for compressed air as a source of dissolved 02. The energy savings in required horsepower enabled a rapid payback period. Thus the project was approved in the spring of 1992 and l should be operational during the final quarter of 1992. INTRODUCTIONIn a continuing effort to reduce operating costs and improve recovery at the Dome mill it was decided to investigate the feasibility of adding liquid oxygen (02) to the leach circuit. It is now common practice in the gold processing community to add 02 to the leaching process to increase both kinetics and recovery. It was anticipated that an increase in kinetics would allow us to eliminate one or more leach tanks while maintaining acceptable recoveries. The metallurgical group felt that along with these benefits, the potential was also there to reduce power consumption through the reduction in the processing of compressed air which is quite costly (12 cents/1000 cubic feet per minute in 1991)."

"The potential for mudrushes is a potential hazard that should be evaluated during cave mining studies. Mudrushes are a phenomenon that can have very different origins, but produce the same results: injury, loss of life, damage to property, excess dilution, production delays, or mine closure. Although mudrushes are more common in cave mines than other mines, any mining activity that enables the accumulation of fine particles and water is susceptible to mudflow. This paper describes the process developed by the authors during the past decade to evaluate the risk of mudrushes, specifically in caving and sublevel caving mines.RÉSUMÉ Un danger potentiel qui devrait être évalué durant les études d’exploitation par blocs foudroyés est la possibilité d’afflux de boue. Le phénomène des afflux de boue peut avoir des origines très diverses; les résultats sont cependant les mêmes : des blessures, des pertes de vie, des dommages à la propriété, une dilution excessive, des délais de production ou des fermetures de mines. Bien que les afflux de boue soient plus fréquents dans les mines exploitées par blocs foudroyés, toute activité minière qui permet l’accumulation de particules fines et d’eau est sujette à des coulées de boue. "High carbon rods are typically used as the grinding media in rod mills. Usually an AISI I 090 grade of steel is used which provides the high hardness needed for abrasion resistance and sufficient toughness to prevent rod breakage.Work to improve performance in the past has mainly concentrated on increasing the hardness for improved abrasion resistance. This has been accomplished by adding alloys to the steel which uniformly increase the hardness across the rod section.However uniformly increasing the hardness of the rod produces a more brittle product and at high hardness l1evels can lead to rod breakage problems. Heat treatment processes can be used to selectively increase the surface hardness to high levels while maintaining the core at lower hardness levels to give a product that wears slower without breakage. AltaSteel has developed and mill tested a higher hardness heat treated grinding rodThis paper describes the development of a simple model to predict performance improvement with different hardness profiles and the AltaSteel heat-treated grinding rod process. Mill characteristics of the Endako operation are summarized and predicted performance improvements based on hardmess are compared to the approximate 25% achieved in trials running since July, 1991 at this mill. Early results of other mill trials are also presented.INTRODUCTIONAltaSteel, in Edmonton is a major supplier of grinding media. We have a strong desire to continually increase the quality and performance of our products and thereby improve the efficiency of our customers' processes. In the area of grinding rods, we wanted to produce a product with a significant improvement in wear rate. Second to energy, rod consumption usually represents the next highest cost in processing. This paper presents our development of a heattreated grinding rod that has reduced consumption by about 25% in trials to date."

"Chairman - To start this discussion off, I wonder if Mr. Dave Livingstone or Mr. Jeffrey of Granisle Copper would give a description of the crushing plant at Granisle since it is somewhat different from the usual plant, W. N. Jeffrey - Granisle Copper The main difference between the Granisle crushing plant and many others is the Livingstone method of putting the screens under the crushers instead of above them. This method allows a more compact arrangement and eliminates the heavy superstructure required to take care of the screen vibration when the screens are mounted above the crushers. There is a small surge bin above the tertiary crusher which takes care of the variation in circulating loads.All three crushers are gyratory crushers. There is no grizzly ahead of the primary crusher but the fines are removed from the primary crusher discharge at the first screen and sent directly to the fine ore bins. N. Jeffrey - The primary gyratory is a 42 x 65 with a nominal open side setting of 61'. We do at times get a run of oversize material. For anything too large for the crusher to handle, we use what is known as the Esco hook, which is a type of grapple used to remove oversize rocks.The disadvantage with this equipment is that the crane is too slow. "Abstract- The Century mine in northwest Queensland,Australia, is a major sediment-hosted zinclead- silver orebody, located within the western Mount Isa Basin. Stratiform, carbonaceous shalehosted mineralization is developed within Proterozoic shale and siltstone sequences of the Lawn Hill Formation. CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) discovered the Century deposit in 1990 and open pit mine development commenced in 1998 under the ownership of Pasminco Century Mine Limited (PCML). The deposit contains an identified mineral resource of 105 Mt @ 12.1% Zn + 1.7% Pb + 46 g/t Ag (Broadbent and Waltho, 1998) which is currently being mined at a rate of 5 Mt/y.In December 1998, an exothermic reaction was observed between explosives spilt onto shale drill cuttings from a blasthole. This reaction is referred to as ‘reactive ground’ and has the potential to cause premature detonation of explosives in a charged blasthole with catastrophic consequences. The incident led to a subsequent geological and geochemical assessment of the different rock types at the Century deposit and their potential reactivity with ammonium nitrate-based (AN) explosive products. This assessment was conducted in an attempt to characterize zones safe for blasting with uninhibited AN-based explosive products. A direct result of this study is a set of procedures outlining the use of different AN-based explosives in areas defined as potentially reactive or non-reactive for the different lithologies present. Black shales contained in both the waste and mineralized sequences contain the sulfide mineral pyrite (FeS2), which is thermodynamically unstable with AN contained in commonly used explosives. The potential reactivity of partially weathered pyrite can ultimately result in the decomposition of an AN-based explosive. It was determined that only pyritic black shales showed any potential to react with AN, irrespective of their position in the stratigraphic sequence. Other lithologies present at Century, including Proterozoic sandstone and Cambrian limestone, are classified as non-reactive with AN. This is a geological risk management situation present at the Century mine."

The Argyle diamond mine is located in the Kimberley region in the northern part of Western Australia at approximately 16°43'S, 128°23'E in subtropical bush/shrub savannah. The 46 ha (113 acres) pipe is situated in the Halls Creek mobile zone, which was cratonized about 1800 Ma ago and adjoins the Kimberley Block, a plateau upheld by Early to Middle Proterozoic rocks underlain by presumably Archean basement. The crater and upper pipe zones of the diatreme have been preserved within tilted and faulted strata of Middle to Late Proterozoic age. Its age of intrusion is about 1178 Ma. The diatreme rock is not kimberlite but olivine lamproite which was not recognized as a primary diamond host rock until 1978. The Kalumburu Joint Venture, a syndicate of local and overseas mining companies, started in 1972 to prospect the Kimberley Block with a modest annual prospecting budget of $125,000. Annual expenditure doubled each year and reached $1 million in 1975 after which CRA took over management of the newly-formed Ashton Joint Venture with an annual expenditure of $2 million (all figures are in current US dollars). The Argyle diatreme was found near the end of the eighth field season and after a total expenditure of $12 million. Annual production is about 34 million carats which places Australia as the world's number one diamond-producing country, although, because of the low value per carat, it is number four in terms of total annual value. The global cost required for a major diamond mine is between $300 and $400 million, with a discovery every 10 to 12 years. Because Canada contains large areas of prospective platform rocks underlain by Archean basement it is likely that a major diamond deposit does exist there. It is probable that it will be found before the end of this decade and exploration expenditure may be in the order of $100 million.

Sedimentary phosphate-bearing rocks are found over a considerable area of so utheastern British Columbia that extends from Fernie east to the Alberta-British Columbia boundary and from the International Boundary northward to the headwatei: s of the Elk River. Phosphatic beds occur at the following four stratigraphic levels: 1. lower part of the Banff-Exshaw sequence of Mississippian age; 2. lshbel Formation of Permian age; 3. base of the Fernie Group of Jurassic age; 4. belemnite bed within the Rock Creek Member of the lower part of the Fernie Group. To date, considerable tonnages of phosphate rock have been proven in the area. However, no commercial production has been initiated because of a relatively low P2O5 grade. Data on assays and thicknesses of the phosphatic beds are in part recalculated from the paper by Telfer (I 933) and in part from assessment reports filed at the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources.

In the period 1970-1995, a number of hydro metallurgical processes to treat copper concentrates to overcome the pollution problem due to S02 emission in smelters were developed. Pilot and commercial scale plants were built and operated for some time, but eventually all were abandoned a few years later. It is constructive to examine why these processes were abandoned after so much expenditure of funds and effort, so that errors should not be repeated in the future and lessons from the past are learned.

Over the years, concentrator plant design has evolved from a large number of small grinding mills to a small number of large mills. In many cases, all of the tonnage runs through a single mill (typically a large SAG mill), so that the plant’s performance hinges on the productivity of this one machine. Industry specifications attempt to address the critical nature of today’s grinding mills in a manner that is often overly complex, neglects economics, and is not clearly focused on the end user’s goals. This paper surveys current industry practices, and proposes an improved approach to standards writing recognizing that product design, procurement, manufacturing, and quality are all inter-related in contributing to a project’s success. The lessons learned here can be extended to specifications for all types of machinery.

The Au/?-Al2O3 catalyst prepared by AuCl3 impregnation is subjected to the influence of residual chlorine after an oven drying. A post-impregnation NH4OH treatment was able to eliminate chlorine, and to reduce the cluster size of Au moiety. However, the CO oxidation activity was not increased by this post-impregnation NH4OH treatment. This suggests that certain metal-support interaction (MSI) is the determining factor for the activity of Au catalysts. Thermal treatment under H2, O2 or He was attempted to increase MSI of the prepared catalyst with or without the post-impregnation NH4OH treatment. No significant activity enhancement was found but the TPD analysis suggests that a H2 treatment has a higher chance to induce MSI.

The Mobrun VMS deposit in northwestern Quebec does not fit the classic Noranda type model, but exhibits characteristics more consistent with a Mattabi-type deposit. The orebodies are underlain by fragmental volcanic rocks indicative of explosive volcanism in shallow water. Felsic volcanic rocks are more abundant than mafic rocks. Alteration assemblages comprise chlorite, carbonate, sericite, and quartz. Broad semi-conformable alteration occurs high in the footwall to the 1100 lens. Mobrun occurs higher in the stratigraphic sequence than most of the other deposits in the Noranda camp. In this part of the stratigraphy, zones of pervasive carbonatization may be more useful guides for exploration than zones of silicification.

OZ Minerals owns and operates the Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator in South Australia, built in 2008 and commissioned in early 2009. The concentrator operates via semi autogenous grinding in a thirty four foot ThyssenKrupp Polysius mill followed by a twenty four foot Polysius ball mill in closed circuit with hydro cyclones, designed for an ore throughput of eight million tonnes per annum. The main aspects of designing the circuit are discussed along with the issues faced in the early stages of operation. A review of the optimization strategy applied to the milling circuit such as cyclone optimization, advanced process control strategy implementation and reline management to improve availability is then discussed highlighting areas of significant process improvement that have seen the plant exceed nameplate throughputs above nine million tonnes per annum.

The Úrkút rhodochrosite deposit and Branisko Mn showings (rancieite, manganiferous calcite), located in Lower Jurassic marine sedimentary rocks with black shale, were studied by organicgeochemical methods. Both depositional localities were affected by the Lower Jurassic Toarcian anoxic event. UrkUt shales are rich in organic matter (av. 2.94 wtOJo total organic carbon), the composition of which indicates derivation mainly from marine sources, with some terrigenous component. The shales matured in a bacterially active environment under reducing conditions of diagenesis-catagenesis. Branisko shales (~0.2 wt % TOC) with lenses of Mn oxide ore were weakly metamorphosed and their organic matter thermally degraded. The model for Mn carbonate ore formation envisages reaction of Mn derived from sediments, with carbonate generated by a bacterially mediated process of decomposition of organic matter that also involved Mn reduction.

X-ray analysis systems installed in Canadian concentrators to-date may be broadly classified as wavelength dispersive analysers whereas the installation described herein is an energy dispersive x-ray analysis system. Energy dispersive x-ray analysis techniques may utilize radioactive sources to provide primary x-rays for excitation of elements and separate the secondary x-rays on the basis of energy levels. In contrast wavelength dispersive analysers apply high voltage x-ray tubes to provide primary x-rays and utilize crystals to disperse and thereby separate x-rays generated by bombardment of the sample."

"A description of the Geco orebody has been given by W .L. Brown and R.C.E. Bray (1). The mill flowsheet and equipment were described by M.J.S. Bennett, D. Wild and C. Lawton (2). Mill capacity is now 4, 150 tons per operating day of copper, silver, zinc and lead ore. A recent flowsheet has been published in the - Canadian Mining Manual (1966).Soon after the start of production in September 1957, it became apparent that large tonnages of sand would be required by the mine for backfill pruposes. Initial experimental work on the preparation of sand fill from the flotation tailings was begun in late 19 59. Cyclones of local manufacture, in a variety of sizes, were tested quite successfully. There were, however, several obvious advantages with some of the custom-built cyclones and a recommendation was obtained from the Techniquip Company. A single Krebs D-10-B cyclone was tested experimentally in 1960.INITIAL TESTWORKExperimental results showed that with our relatively coarse grind (in the order of 53 % minus 200 mesh) 75 - 80% of the flotation tailings could be recovered as backfill sand with one stage of treatment. Percolation rates of four inches per hour were obtained with cyclone inlet pressures in the range of 20 - 25 psi and feed densities of 20 - 23% solids."

"Abstract - This paper deals with industrial complexes such as: (1) a mine producing metal-bearing ore and a furnace(s)/converter(s) where the ore is melted into metal, either directly, or after a mineralurgical concentration; and (2) quarries producing the raw materials required for the manufacturing of cement and the kilns to which they are fed.Each mine or quarry operation results from the exploitation of a mineral deposit. This deposit is never homogeneous. The raw materials which are extracted from the mine/quarry can never be safely fed to a "process" such as a cement kiln or a metal smelter, because the devices involved lack the flexibility required to absorb a very inhomogeneous feed. Furnaces and kilns are known to be very sensitive, sometimes dangerously so, with regard to deviations from a certain ideal feed composition.The purpose of this paper is to present the conditions required to optimize the operation of such a complex, so as to maximize the production, the quality of the product, as well as the profit generated. Two key operations are involved: sampling (to know accurately the materials being dealt with) and bed-blending (to achieve the desired degree of homogeneity). The theories of sampling and bedblending have been developed by the author and presented in various books (Gy, 1992, 1998)."

As the building has recently become bigger, higher, and freeform, a technology called BIM(Building Information Modeling), which is a key technology that integrates construction and IT(Information Technology), has been rapidly introduced and expanded. Because BIM technology offers various benefits, countries that introduced BIM early has been actively promoted. However, misperceptions of BIM are prevalent in countries such as South Korea that have adopted it relatively late, with lack of awareness of its fundamental purposes. Under these circumstances, transparent and quantitative performance assessment needs to be executed in order to eliminate the misperceptions, and to explain and revitalize the BIM introduction. These quantitative performance measure KPI (Key Performance Indicators) to be measured should be prioritized. As derive performance indicators in terms of the four types (financial, customer, internal processes, learning and growth), and performance management systems, Uses the BSC to seek a balance between short-term financial goals, values and the value of long-term goals. Uses the BSC(Balanced Scorecards) to derive performance indicators in terms of the four types (financial, customer, internal processes, learning and growth), and performance management systems, seeking a balance between the value of short-term financial objectives and the value of long-term objectives. Through this, the KPI (Key Performance Indicators) which is used for measuring the effect of the BIM will be generated and also the method that can determine whether the generated KPI figures are objectively inter-connected will be suggested as well.

"The current increase in gold price may presage a resurgence of gold milling plants in Canada similar to that of the thirties. Because the industry has been at a low ebb for almost two decades, future operating responsibilities will likely devolve upon personnel with limited cyanidation experience. My comments, which may seem elementary to experienced operators, are directed towards these industry newcomers to highlight operational features in cyanidation which forty years' experience has shown me to 0e of importance. A brief review of what actually takes place in a cyanide circuit may help give a better understanding of the topics to be discussed.These will include: (1) expose the gold (2) dissolve the gold(3) make solid/liquid separation(4) recover the gold from solution.1. Expose the GoldThe chemical key to gold recovery by cyanidation lies in the ready solubility of the metal in a relatively weak solution (0.04%-0.075% NaCN equivalent by weight) of calcium or sodium cyanide. Obviously, dissolution cannot start unless the cya1ide is in contact with the gold. As an analogy, the yolk of a hard-boiled egg can oe taken to represent the gold particle and the egg white and shell, the surrounding gangue or sulphide host. As the sl1ell and white must be fractured to expose the yolk, similarly the surrounding gorngue or sulphide host must be broken or fractured to enable the cyanide solution to contact the gold."

In September 1996, Dofasco commissioned a 165 Mt twin shell EAF furnace and an associated ladle fleet. During and after this startup, refractory performance in the ladles was optimized on a holistic approach through several initiatives that increased ladle refractory retention times from 7000 to over 16000 mins (160 heats). This dropped the overall refractory costs by 40% while ensuring a consistent and predictable ladle performance. One initiative that drove enhancements was the proper brick selection for each particular refractory area and it's process conditions. The work concentrated on the selection of a resin bonded alumina magnesia carbon (AMC) brick in the barrel area of the ladle, upgrades to the 2 piece monolithic alumina cast ladle bottom and increasing the slagline refractory brick quality with the appropriate zoning/paneling. The adoption of a magnesia alumina carbon (MAC) brick in the transition area of the barrel/slagline has also improved performance and predictability. The design developments have lowered the overall wear rates and balanced the service life of the entire ladle. Safety was improved and breakout potential reduced by changing the safety lining from a high alumina brick to a state of art technology - monolithic shotcrete lining. This initiative decreased the overall manpower required to brick a ladle and increased shop ladle availability. The ladle bricking area environment was also improved by adopting a post combustion device to burn phenol fumes from ladle preheating practices. This has improved the overall health & safety of the reline teams. The consistent and predictable performance of the ladle on a whole has allowed the shop to decrease the number of working ladles in operation from 5 to 4. This further decreased wear rates from over-oxidation and excessive thermal cycling, saving approximately $500,000 in natural gas from pre-heater operations.
