Three main genetic types of hematite can be recognised at Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF): Micaceous or schistose hematite derived by metamorphic/metasomatic process during regional metamorphism, increasing eastward, formed under temperatures ranging from 250¦C to 500¦C in CO2-rich aqueous carbonic, high- to medium-salinity fluids. Hematite in shear and mylonite zones, showing a wide variation of fluid and temperature conditions, between metamorphic and hydrothermal conditions. Deformed quartz-specular hematite veins formed during the late phases. Hydrothermal, compact and isotropic hematite developed during a brittle-ductile regime, forming the cement of the boudinage-kink breccia and jacutinga-type of gold mineralisation, under temperatures ranging from 80¦C to 140¦C in aqueous, low- to medium salinity, oxidant fluids, resulting from the interaction of meteoric and metamorphic/metasomatic fluids. Quartz-carbonate-sulfide veins were formed slightly later, through reducing fluids.

The iron ore deposits in India are rich in iron content but usually contains high alumina and silica. The current industrial practice results three products namely lump, fines and slimes. The lump and fines with or without beneficiation are directly fed to the blast furnace and sintering plant respectively while the super fines or slimes are presently discarded as tailings. Around eight million tonnes of iron ore slimes estimated as being 15 - 20 per cent by weight of run of mine ore containing ~48 - 62 per cent Fe, is discarded every year causing huge loss to the Indian iron ore industry. In addition, these slimes stored in massive tailing ponds pose enormous environmental and ecological problems. Extensive investigations have been carried out on three iron ore slimes generated at Barsua, Bolani and Meghahatuburu iron ore mines of India. The studies include physical, chemical, mineralogical characterisation and beneficiation studies adopting conventional hydroclyclone and wet high intensity magnetic separator. The characterisation studies have indicated that most of the gangue minerals are accumulated in finer fractions. The studies on hydrocyclone and magnetic separation had indicated that an iron concentrate of 61 - 65 per cent Fe could be obtained by recovering 59 - 78 per cent of the iron values present in the slimes. Depending on the nature of the slimes the alumina and silica levels have been brought down to 2.5 and 1.0 per cent respectively. The effects of different operating and design variables along with detailed characterisation studies have been highlighted.

The Mt Keith Operation, 90 kilometres north of Leinster in the north-eastern Goldfields of Western Australia, was commissioned in October 1994. Based on a large tonnage, low-grade nickel sulphide orebody the plant was designed to produce 28 000 tonnes of nickel in a high-grade 20 per cent nickel concentrate. Following a successful and rapid start-up the operation is currently expanding to a throughput of ten million tonnes per annum (mtpa) ore and an annual production of 42 000 tonnes of nickel. What is the best method of splitting a sample from a reverse circulation drill rig? How important is it to obtain a correctly split sample? What is the impact of an incorrectly split sample? These are just a few of many questions asked daily in the mining industry with regard to sampling. Modern sampling theory is well described in the literature in texts and is taught in short courses throughout the world, however little has been published on the relative performance of sample splitting devices used in the field. This paper compares the performance of the Jones tiered riffle splitter with a cone splitter manufactured by SGS Metal Craft in Western Australia. The testwork was carried out at AnglogoldÆs Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, 55 km south of Laverton in Western Australia. Mineralisation at Sunrise Dam is hosted in a structurally complex framework of shear zones with dips that range from steep (70¦) to shallow (25¦). The deposit is characterised by significant amounts of coarse gold, which presents a challenge in sampling, analysis and grade estimation. The three major areas where sampling errors can occur are in drilling, sampling, sample preparation and analysis. Sampling errors attributable to drilling and sample preparation often far outweigh the errors made at other stages in the process, however historically most effort to identify sampling errors has concentrated on the laboratory and analytical procedures. Splitter design and cleanliness can have a large impact on sample collection and preparation. Splitter performance was tested with respect to sample weights, particle size distribution, and gold grade consistency. The aim was to determine if each particle has an equal probability of being sampled, the resulting sample has integrity, and if any segregation problems occurred. The cone splitter was found to provide the best split in terms of particle size distribution, with no apparent size bias. Duplicate samples had more comparable masses than those provided by the riffle splitter. Most importantly, the cone splitter gave less grade variability between duplicate samples than the riffle splitter. Testwork also confirmed that, like the riffle splitter, the cone splitter must be oriented vertically and the design of the rig or cone splitter trailer should accommodate this requirement.

Acclaimed as one of the most remarkable orebodies anywhere on account of its length and richness, the Oroya Shoot occurs on the eastern side of the Kalgoorlie gold mining district close to the contact of a fine-grained with a coarse-grained greenstone, and in association with sediments. In the same stratigraphic position on the synclinal flanks of a large drag fold there are a number of other flat ore pipes, smaller, but almost as rich in tenor. Although differing in control structure they are believed to be related genetically as all show a characteristic development of a bright-green ore known locally as "green leader". Folding and bedding structures have played an important part in formation of the ore shoots.INTRODUCTIONThe Oroya Shoot is the biggest individual bonanza of Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile. It has been stoped almost continuously over a length of 4,300 ft., and about 2,000,000 oz. of gold have been won from it. Naturally pillars are not left in the best sections of such an orebody and the detailed geology of stoped out portions can only be inferred from examination of adjacent workings.No mention is made in the literature of the actual makeup of the orebody although a few structures are shown on some of the old cross sections. A diagrammatic cross section, Fig. 1, adapted from Stillwell (1929) illustrates the form of the Oroya Shoot.Gustafson (1937) drew attention to the role of folding, previously unrecognized, in Kalgoorlie geology, and indicated that the Oroya Shoot is associated with a minor drag fold on the east limb of the Brownhill Syncline, itself part of a larger left hand drag on the Central Anticline. The latter in turn appears to be part of a regional right hand fold system as shown by Campbell (1953).

Teller Underground Mine was established to extract ore from the Middle Vale Reef located on the eastern flank of Telfer Main Dome.The mine is located below a 150 m deep open pit operation. The ore body is shallow dipping highly structured, and is a main aquifer in quite difficult ground conditions.In respect of these conditions it was determined to access the orebody using an adaptation of coal mining and hard rock mining methods, with support being achieved using a combination of island pillars, rock bolts and timber stalls.The paper will describe these methods in more detail, then discuss the successes and failures of these methods when put into practice. As well, it will detail several factors whose influences were found to be greater than previously expected and stress the importance of good geotechnical advice.

This paper gives a description of the research undertaken by an explosives manufacturer to give better technical advice to the Mineral Industry. Blasting Physics is defined as giving a systematic and coherent account of the initiation and subsequent effects of high explosives upon the surrounding medium. As a result of this work a mathematical model based on the gener- ally accepted mechanism of blasting has been developed. The mechanism and the resulting model are briefly outlined. In many branches of engineering, there has to be an understanding of the motion of fluids in order to solve problems. Many safety and health problems in the mining industry are typical examples that involve the understanding and analysis of fluid flow, such as explosions, the spread of fires, dispersion of gas and dust, and ventilation patterns. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is concerned with the use of computers to produce information about the ways in which fluids flow in given situations. Until recently CFD has been widely applied to a variety of industrial sectors and increasingly to problems in the health and safety areas. With the arrival of more powerful computers and CFD packages, CFD techniques are no longer practised solely in a research environment, but can be used by engineers in many industrial fields. This paper introduces the basic concepts and general procedures involved in the use of CFD technology. A comparison is given as a guide to the major features of a number of widely used commercial CFD codes. Areas of potential CFD applications are identified in a range of safety and health problems in mining industry. An example is presented to illustrate the use of this technology. It is believed that the exploitation of these areas using CFD approach will contribute significantly to the solution of today's many mine health and safety problems.

The Central Extended Orebody is located within the Cracow Goldfield approximately 360 km northwest of Brisbane and approximately 220 km west of Bundaberg. It is an epithermal gold deposit hosted by the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian Camboon Andesite. The lode was mined by open cut methods and produced 170 458 tonnes of ore at 5.62 g/t gold.The geology of the rit is relatively simple, comprising two rock types, trachyandesite and rhyolite which have been sub-divided into several units. The trachyandesite is sub-divided into three rock types: brecciated trachyandesite which is the most widespread, hydraulically fractured trachyandesite hosts the mineralisation and the third sub-unit is chloritised hydraulically fractured trachyandesite and has no associated mineralisation. The mineralisation is confined to quartz veins in hydraulically fractured trachyandesite. Several phases of brecciation and subsequent quartz and quartz/adularia vein injection are evident although not all phases are mineralised. Two rhyolite dykes intrude the trachyandesite one is monolithic, the other is sub-divided into hydraulically fractured rhyolite (barren), silicified rhyolite and auto-brecciated rhyolite.

The Clermont Goldfield, from which about 300,000 oz of bullion have been extracted, was one of the major gold producers in Queensland. This paper is derived from a systematic study of the mineralogy, geochemistry, and stable isotope geochemistry of the deposit, based on detailed field work and logging of 57 reverse-circulation percussion drilling holes at the Black Ridge Gold Deposit (Fig 1), aimed at addressing the long debated question of gold-ore genesis at Clermont, i.e., whether it is of fossil placer or hydrothermal origin.Detailed petrologic and mineralogical studies indicate the hydrothermal alteration at Black Ridge is dominated by extensive siderite (+rhodochrosite-ankerite) veinlets and stockworks, which are concentrated along the deformed unconformity between the Anakie Metamorphics and basal conglomerates of the early Permian Blair Athol Coal Measures. Siderite alteration is also moderately developed in all other rock units represented at Black Ridge, including the Tertiary basalt. Weak to moderate phyllosilicate alteration is common throughout the deposit, including chlorite-sericite along the shear zone of the unconformity, and sericite-clay in the conglomerates. A sulphide-oxides zonation also has occurred, including pyrite below the unconformity, (pyrite)-chalcopyrite-marcasite-(hematite) along the deformed unconformity, and marcasite (hematite, pyrite) in the conglomerates.

During a programme of explosive performance evaluation at Hamersley Iron, Mount Tom Price Mining Operations, the relative performances of a range of heavy ANFO explosives were compared during normal production blasting operations. In addition, a number of heavily instrumented single hole blasting trials were conducted with each product type. The blasts were monitored in terms of blasthole velocity of detonation (VOD), measured using multi-point plasma conductivity probes with up to 16 measurements per blasthole. Up to 16 blastholes were monitored in each production blast. The results of measurements show a marked difference in performance of all heavy ANFO products between single blastholes and full production blasts, indicating a significant degree of interaction between blastholes in production blasting. The interaction is shown to result in a loss of detonation pressure of explosive, and considered to lead to a loss of fragmentation. The degree of interaction is seen to increase with increasing emulsion content in the products, and is more pronounced in some explosive types than others. The paper presents the methods of measurement and analysis, and the results of monitoring, together with implications on blast design and application of heavy ANFO products.

Rifting and transfer faulting in the Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary resulted in the formation of the Bundaberg Trough and Wallaville Basin and deflected the margin of the Maryborough Basin southwestward between the Kolan and Burnett Rivers. During the Cainozoic, three periods of volcanic activity occurred in the Bundaberg-Gin Gin area. The oldest of these periods, Paleocene to Early Eocene, resulted in the outpouring of tholeiitic lavas. During the Late Miocene to Pliocene, undersaturated alkali basalts generated at depths of from ca. 35 to 55 km were emplaced. These lavas were followed in the Pleistocene by the alkaline Hummock and Berrembea Basalts. The loci of eruption of all of these lavas were controlled by the intersection of the transfer fault system and pre-existing north to northwesterly trending faults in the Bundaberg-Gin Gin area.

An overview of flotation reagents used in sulfide and non-sulfide separations, from an industrial perspective, is given in this presentation to highlight the current applications knowledge. The historical and theoretical aspects, which are well documented in numerous books and reviews, will only be highlighted, when necessary, to support the theme of this paper, viz critical analysis of reagent research, design, selection and optimisation with an emphasis on relevance to plant needs and practice. The three types of flotation reagents; viz collectors, frothers and modifiers, used currently in the industry are briefly reviewed; pitfalls and gaps, arising from somewhat arbitrary and reductionistic practice in reagent applications, are identified; and the impact of environmental regulations on current and future reagent development is discussed. The importance of frothers and modifiers, which have received less overall attention than collectors, is highlighted. The need for a rational, holistic (or ætotal systemÆ, ætop-downÆ) approach for reagent design, selection and optimisation is discussed with a view to provide remedies for pitfalls and a platform for filling gaps in reagent chemistry and applications, and to develop reagent technology that can deliver robust solutions to plant needs. Today, more and more tunnel ventilation systems are based on NO2 (or NO) and visibility measurements. Due to the significant decrease of CO emissions in countries with EU emission standards, which were adopted by Australia in 2004, CO is no longer a key factor for tunnel air quality monitoring and is often only measured for plausibility reasons (eg according to the German guideline RABT2006). Nitrogen dioxide, which is a good indicator for the overall air pollution along roads, is now taking over the leading role not only for ventilation control but also for air quality monitoring and in future probably for checking the function of air filtration plants in tunnels. Due to the lack of equipment for reliable and long-term NO2 measurements in road tunnels in the past, there are only very few standards giving limit values for NO2 in road tunnels. Furthermore there are not many records of NO2 readings over longer periods in different types of tunnels. SICK MAIHAK, a major supplier of measurement devices for controlling tunnel ventilation, has introduced the first monitor in 2006, specifically designed for measuring NO2, NO and visibility simultaneously in road tunnels. There are now experiences and results from the first tunnels equipped with this kind of system. This paper will present and discuss the results and experiences from these tunnels and explain the different levels of NO2 in different tunnel types. Furthermore, the status of air quality standards for road tunnels regarding NO2 limit values and the current status of discussion in various countries about NO2 limits will be presented.

Production of refined zinc (99.95 per cent) at the minesite without increasing greenhouse gas emissions is considered. As an example, exploitation of the full reserve of the McArthur River orebody is proposed, using the existing concentrator, whilst introducing radically innovative smelting technology. Bulk flotation of all the sulphide minerals is followed by smelting in a melt circulation reactor with tonnage oxygen. By smelting the high-energy pyritic concentrate and reacting the evolved sulphur dioxide with near-mine dolomite, a large amount of electricity can be generated. This is enough to supply all the requirements for the smelter itself, an air separation plant and a facility for compressing and liquefying carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is disposed of off-shore for enhanced oil recovery or by other means. The reacted dolomite fixes sulphur as an inert and environmentally acceptable solid residue. Treatment by these means leads to virtually zero gas emission smelting. The paper concludes with a vision for the future in which expansion of zinc smelting capacity is seen to be definitely needed.

Despite advances in technology, the Australian underground coal mining industry continues to have incidents involving spontaneous combustion. Managing these incidents relies heavily on understanding the state of the event as it develops and controls are applied. Gas analysis plays a major role in aiding this interpretation. This interpretation is based upon laboratory testing of coal samples under conditions very different to those found in an underground coal mine. This paper will explore the links between laboratory data and actual events. It will highlight the difficulties of using laboratory data. It will outline the relevance of laboratory data and how it can be usefully applied to manage spontaneous combustion events as well as in establishing relevant trigger action response plans to facilitate early detection and control of such events. The paper will identify some of the factors that need to be applied when adapting laboratory data to apply to the underground coal mine. It will outline the need for comprehensive knowledge of the local conditions and gas concentrations to be expected at all locations in an underground coal mine. Further, it will demonstrate the need for mine environment monitoring to go beyond simply measuring gas concentrations but also to include reliable atmospheric pressure, temperature and air velocity monitoring.CITATION:Cliff, D, 2013.
