The engineering geological mapping of Metropolitan Area of Jopo Pessoa in the littoral zone of the Parafba State, northeast of Brazil, made possible the ambient characterisation for space using and its implications on the environmental resources. This region comes lately denoting an accented industrial growth and this work would help future projects of urban planning, distinguished by quick ground occupations for residential, industrial installations, farming, beyond mineral extractions. The mineral sector supplies material and substance demanded by industry and civil constructions, like as clay deposits, sands, calcareous rocks and mineral water. Many companies working there do not have the permission or inspection of ambient agencies for planned extractions of mineral resources. The consequences of this activity pass for the low profit of the reserves, bad uses of the sources, ground degradation, vegetation suppressions and physical impacts on landscapes, beyond noises and vibrations. These activities have causing accelerated alterations and transformations in the environment, compromising the sustainable development. It thus becomes clear that urgent solutions must be find to solve the problems with human interferences by closer inspection and management for disciplined use of its natural resources.

Different mineral structures can act as mineral reservoirs for the immobilisation of toxic compounds. In the paper different mineral structures will be explained and their potential for incorporation of heavy metals and anions will be shown. The following structures will be explained (P÷llmann, 2007):apatites (incorporation of heavy metals, silicate apatites);ettringites (fixation of oxo-anions);layered double hydroxides (fixation of heavy metals, fixation of anions, fixation of organics, sorption materials); andmanganese oxides. Different possibilities of solid solution and incorporation in crystal structures will be explained and advantages of stable minerals be proved using experiences with real toxic wastes. In the process of thermal treatment the formation of primary mineral reservoirs will be shown. The precursor phases (similar to well known cement minerals) react in contact with water to form secondary mineral reservoirs (cement hydration mineral products). The formation condition of primary and secondary mineral reservoirs and their stabilities and incorporation possibilities will be shown. Examples for incorporation of various elements are given. Application for water clarification will be outlined.

Hydrocyclones are the most widely used device for classification in a grinding circuit. However, even the most efficient hydrocyclone has a bypass of fines from the feed to the underflow which reduces comminution circuit performance, as well as misclassification around the cut point. Fine screens classify only according to the particle size, allowing for a reduction in the recirculation of fines back to the mill. The development of high capacity multi-screens makes fine classification in a grinding circuit a viable option. Minera Saucito recently substituted hydrocyclones with screens in its grinding circuit. The change of classifier resulted in an increase in throughput and lead recovery but a decrease in silver recovery. This case study presents the changes in comminution and flotation performance that occurred after the installation of screens and uses historical operational data collected over 12 months of operation to investigate the reasons for these observed changes. When ore is being selected from a regularised block model, a common procedure is to accept as ore any block whose iron content exceeds a cut-off value, and whose content in each contaminant analyte is below an appropriate cut-off value. This method defines a quadrant within the multidimensional analyte space, such that any block lying within the quadrant is accepted as ore and any block lying outside the quadrant is rejected as waste. The cut-off levels can be adjusted to maximise ore tonnage at a target grade (or analyte vector). When the method is applied to a project comprising multiple pits with systematically differing grades, it is found that ore tonnage at target grade is maximised if different cut-off quadrants are used for the different pits. This is apparently illogical, because it implies that an ore block from one pit may be accepted as ore, but an identical block from another pit is rejected as waste, even when ore from both pits is to be blended into the same product and there are no production cost differences between the pits. The paradox is an example of the ætheory of the second bestÆ: if there are multiple conditions for optimality and one condition is broken, then obeying the other conditions may not be the best policy. The problem lies with the quadrant cut-off method, which is shown to be inconsistent even for selecting ore from a single pit. A criterion that is inconsistent cannot be optimal. It is shown that a linear composite cut-off function provides maximum ore tonnage, and that a single composite cut-off criterion is consistent and optimal over multiple pits. Further, it is shown that a composite cut-off function not only maximises ore tonnage at a specified composition, but also can be used to select ore so as to maximise project value, if marginal costs and values are available.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2013. Photoelastic and equivalent material model ling techniques for studying stresses and defor- mations and modes of failure in geological and engineering structures are described. The appli- cation of these techniques to the solution of tunnelling design problems is outlined. Models may contain heterogeneous components to simulate geological and man-made structures and may be two- or three-dimensional. Prototype construc- tion procedures and time dependent behaviour may be modelled. Examples of recent model studies carried out for the design of underground railway tunnels are given. Development of photoelastic and equi- valent material modelling techniques and facili- ties at the CSIRO, Division of Applied Geomech- anics are described, including a biaxial and triaxial frame for testing large scale two and three dimensional equivalent material models and components of full scale prototype structures.

Bolting forms a prestressed elastic layer of rock which is capable of supporting loads at right angles to the bolted surface. Investigations on rock bolting made with a number of different models give rise to empirical and theoretical prin- ciples for the formation and action of the layer. In the models, flat and arched layers of many materials were used simulating rock conditions ranging from closely interlocked blocks to fragments of various shapes. Results of observations made in the underground works of the Snowy Mountains Scheme are related to the mode of action of bolted surface layers of rock. There is abundant experimental, theoretical and practical explanation for the well-demonstrated capability of bolting as a means of rock support.

As a part of the Newcrest, Telfer Expansion Project, a consortium of Australian, Canadian and South African Mining Contractors in joint venture have been contracted to develop the hoisting shaft. The parties namely; Byrnecut Mining Pty Ltd, Murray and Roberts RUC and Thyssen Mining Construction of Canada Ltd have combined their individual expertise to excavate the shaft. There is a particular emphasis on the use of proven shaft sinking techniques from North America and in particular integrating electric hydraulic drilling equipment and personnel from the Canadian Mining industry. The Telfer hoist shaft when completed will have a finished diameter of 7.1 metres and extend to a depth of 1170 metres below the collar. The shaft will be fully concrete lined and will later be equipped for hoisting ore from the Telfer deeps at a rate of five million tonnes per annum. The shaft when completed will be the largest shaft ever completed in Australia on a volumetric basis. This paper will examine the technical aspects of the shaft sink, as well as exploring the integration of personnel and equipment from the frozen prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada into an operation in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia. What are the spin-off benefits for the development of other shafts within Australia?

The Miitel nickel sulfide deposit has been overprinted by a family of late stage structures that have acted as conduits for fluids that have contaminated the orebody with arsenic minerals. This has resulted in highly variable and unpredictable arsenic grades throughout the Miitel orebody. The ore produced from Miitel is processed under a toll-treatment agreement with Western Mining Resources Kambalda Nickel Concentrator. Part of this arrangement includes a financial penalty if monthly average arsenic grades in ore delivered exceed 800 ppm. This constraint has provided an extra challenge to the Miitel mine geologist in addition to daily underground duties. Routine development and stope mapping, close spaced sampling and cross-sectional interpretation were used in building an understanding of the structural controls of arsenic mineralisation and ore repetition at the Miitel nickel mine, and in providing maximum input to mine planning and scheduling. The distribution of structures responsible for arsenic introduction is now well understood from detailed mapping, sampling, and interpretation. By applying these insights to mine scheduling, the operation has successfully managed arsenic levels within the required specifications. Geological mapping has also improved the understanding of the structural complexity of the ore deposit, leading to the addition of ore tonnes and an increased confidence in resource modelling. Regular sampling and tight controls on data quality provided confidence in a strongly skewed arsenic data set. Multiple Indicator Kriging has been used for resource estimation of the arsenic contaminated nickel ore since it allows explicit control of the spatial influence of extreme grades in the positively skewed arsenic sample population. Both the grade control and exploration data sets are used to model the arsenic distribution.

The mining and minerals industry has had and will undoubtedly continue to have a considerable impact on the development of this State. For the first 60 years of its history the colony of Western Australia made slow progress; its population in 1889 being only 43,000. However, as a-result of discovering gold at Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie the Eastern Goldfields alone had a population of 25,000 by 1897. The income generated by the gold mining industry allowed the Premier of the day, Sir John Forrest, and his Government to support the proposal put forward by the State's Engineer in Chief, C.Y. O'Connor, to construct a pipeline to carry water from the Darling Ranges to Kalgoorlie ; a distance of 600 kilometres. The demand for people knowledgeable in the science and art of mineral exploitation also prompted the State Government to establish a School of Mines in the Goldfields in 1902, where it has remained ever since. The gold mines of this region have been a major source of employment for over 70 years and there is no doubt of the fact that their continued prosperity minimised the effect of the world recession on Western Australia in the 1930's.

Strata bolting/dowelling reinforcement techniques are being reintroduced into the mines of the National Coal Board. There are strong reasons for the selection of the full hole anchorage principle of bolting and for the development of the wood/resin dowel. There are strong reasons also for the measurement of strata bed separation as the method of assessing the effectiveness of a roof bolting system. There are several designs of bolts. Instruments have been developed for investigation and control purposes. Different drilling and bolting machines have been employed in trial sites. In addition comparative laboratory model work has been conducted on simple non-bolted and bolted systems.

Initial glory holing was followed by sublevel stoping, with a small proportion of total production mined by shrink and cut-and-fill methods.The sublevel stoping method was successfully modified to cater for altering ground conditions encountered at increasing depths. At present, 94 per cent of production comes from sublevel stopes. The evolution of this mining method and current techniques and practices is outlined. A combined shrink and,sublevel benching method was also developed to increase the mining rate of narrow orebodies over the standard stoping lift of 380 ft. Pillar recovery and stope filling operations have been continuously modified to suit the relIuirements of a rapidly developing mine.INTRODUCTIONOre production commenced at Mount Isa Mines in June 1931. Since then production has increased from approximately 2,500 tons of lead ores per mine day to the current 11,000 tons of sulphide ores per mine day comprising 3,100 tons of lead ore and 7,900 tons of copper ore. For worker safety, mining companies are required to stop production and inspect hoist ropes. Visual inspection is generally done daily and EM inspection occurs every three to four months. During visual inspection, rope speed is generally reduced so an inspector can look for problems. In EM testing the LMA and LF traces are printed on a paper strip chart and a skilled operator interprets these traces. Mining companies only find large defects during visual inspection and are sometimes concerned about the content of EM trace information. This paper will present research outcomes that show how muck can be hoisted while performing a complete visual rope inspection at full speed. Other research results will show that digital signal processing can increase the amount of information available to the EM rope inspector. The research was funded by Inco, C-CORE, three AMIRA International sponsors and six sponsors from the Canadian Deep Mining Research Consortium (DMRC). The research will be commercialised in 2005.

This paper describes the programing and specification requirements which affected the choice of excavation methods on the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop (M.U.R.L.). The various methods that were chosen are briefly described, and the three most used are compared in more detail. Excavation rates, cycle times and other statistics are compared for full face tunnel boring, full face drill and blast, and heading and bench using a road header excava- ting machine. The length of tunnel excavated is sufficient to enable meaningful statistics to be presented and the significant specifi- cation and geological factors are described to weight the statistics where necessary for purposes of comparison. Average tender prices are given for excavation and primary support to indicate the reimbursement sought by contractors to carry out this type of tunnelling.

The ground handling system needed for the second lift of the underground block caving operation at Northparkes Mines had to link into the existing infrastructure. Production requirements indicated that an annual output of 5 Mtpa was necessary from a depth of approximately 850 m. The shaft that serviced the first lift stopped at a depth of 520 m. This paper covers the selection of the design for the system and the factors that were taken into consideration in making the decision. It will describe the installation program and methodology and highlight areas of significance and then detail some of the issues concerning commissioning of the ground handling system.

Radioisotope X-ray and neutron techniques of analysis can be used for the determination of a wide range of elements in minerals. The most important applications of these techniques to the mineral industry are for on-stream analysis of slurries and solids, and for geological assay. The radioisotope X-ray techniques are the more developed ones and two installations for on-stream analysis are in routine use in mineral processing plants in Australia. Neutron techniques are being developed, and should prove valuable for geological assay of large numbers of mineral samples, for borehole logging, and for specific on-stream analysis when the cost of the equipment is warranted.

The use of compressive crushing equipment such as gyratory crushers within minerals processing plants can potentially generate large quantities of dust. Remedies to this problem include the retrofitting of shrouds, enclosures, local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems and water suppression systems. The single or combined application of these systems must be optimised to ensure they operate efficiently. It is desirable that the future design planning of such facilities include integrated dust suppression and/or removal systems to ensure material delivery rates are maintained and the welfare of the workforce is protected. The characteristic release of dust and the disturbance to the surrounding ventilation airflow is investigated by the construction and solution of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models validated by data obtained from scale experiments. A 3D computational model was constructed using the FluentTM CFD software to represent the background ventilation regime within an underground crushing installation. The falling ore is represented as a continuum granular fluid falling under gravity from the raised bed of the dump truck. Transient path lines are computed to simulate the updraft airflow generated by the tipping process and indicate the dispersion path of any entrained dust. The relationships between the falling ore material, the displaced air and the shear induced flow are determined by an analysis of the computed volume/mass flow rates predicted across the crusher opening. An analysis of the airflow patterns predicted by the CFD simulation models indicates strong shear flows induced between the tipped material and the surrounding airflow in the vicinity of the crusher during tipping, and a strong influence of the background ventilation regime on the path taken by this shear flow. Scale experimental studies were conducted to characterise the induced shear flow and visualise the potential entrainment and transport of dust. An analysis of these experiments is presented.

Resource estimation and selective mining of structurally complex, high nugget orebodies presents a major challenge to the Mine Geologist. At the Golden Pig BIF-hosted gold deposit in Western Australia, an estimation method has been developed that replaces an assay-based resource estimate with one based on mineralisation intensity. Subjective coding of the mineralisation intensity has a more robust connection to local grade than drillhole assays. Indicator variograms of the five mineralisation codes are well structured with anisotropy directions similar to observed structural controls. The proportion of each mineralisation code is estimated and a weighted average of the average grade of each code calculated for a block. Initial validation has shown that the model is a good predictor of the mineralisation intensity, and the application of appropriate local average grade for each mineralisation code gives a reliable block grade estimate.

This paper presents the physical modelling results of subsurface fracture development associated with Iongwall mining operations and an application of image processing techniques to interpretion of the results. Physical modelling results haióbeen obtained by employing a large sand and plaster model loaded purely by gravity as a means of fracturing the subsurface strata above the longwall excavation. The results have shown fracture development and crack propagation as a longwall face advances and demonstrated that the strength of stratified rocks, the presence and position of a weak band-, and the extraction thickness, have significant effects upon the overall fracture patterns above the excavation. Binary images of fracture patterns were scanned from the black and white photographs of the tested models using an image analyser coupled to a video camels. These images were manipulated by a custom written C program which allows the images to be processed in both vertical and horizontal direction. The images were filtered to quantitatively differentiate between vertical and horizontal fracture intensities. The vertical fracture intensity is particularly important as vertical fractures are considered to provide the main avenues for surface and subsurface water inflow into the excavation. The use of the image analysis techniques has shown a promising improvement in image enhancement and in model results interpretation in a quantitative manner. The numerical nature of the image analysis results will allow further statistical comparison with other modelling techniques to be undertaken and significantly increase the scope for use of the modelling technique results.

This paper presents the methodology for optimising blasting and comminution processes in terms of fragmentation developed by Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific and South America (MMPT). The methodology is called process integration and optimisation (PIO) and involves a number of steps: benchmarking, rock characterisation, measurements, modelling/simulation of blasting and comminution processes and where required, material tracking. The measurements collected while at site are combined with rock characterisation and definition of ore domains to model the complete process chain. These data are used to develop site-specific models of blast fragmentation, crushing, grinding and flotation. This allows customised blast patterns to be developed that optimise both crushing and grinding performance. For each domain, blast designs are recommended to generate the optimal fragmentation size for downstream processes. The objective is to minimise the overall cost for the entire process and the changes often have a positive impact on the mining operation. Process constraints such as wall stability, ore dilution, muck pile characteristics, size of mining equipment, size and installed power of crushing and milling equipment and other process bottlenecks are considered in the blast designs. This methodology has allowed many operations around the world to significantly increase their production: generating typically five to 20 per cent higher concentrator throughput. A number of case studies will be discussed in this paper to describe the structured approach taken and demonstrate the benefits that are achievable. This paper will focus on the role of blasting in the optimisation of the entire mine to mill process chain and discuss elements of the PIO methodology: rock characterisation, fragmentation modelling and measurement, the relationship between fragmentation and mill throughput and material tracking.
