A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The Middle Palaeozoic Gurvansaikhan Belt (Southern Mongolia) of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt is one of Central Asia’s most significant emerging porphyry copper provinces. The belt has become the focus of extensive exploration for porphyry copper-gold deposits over the last decade following the discovery of the giant Oyu Tolgoi porphyry copper-gold deposit. The Gurvansaikhan Belt is known to host porphyry deposits of Late Devonian (~370 Ma) and Early Carboniferous (~320 Ma) age. The characteristics of Early Carboniferous porphyry systems are poorly known compared to their older counterparts, despite their probable abundance and potential economic significance. Exploration within the Kharmagtai porphyry breccia complex has identified multiple cogenetic gold-copper-porphyry centres and late-stage mineralised magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias emplacement within a composite high-K calc-alkaline quartz monzodiorite intrusive complex. Early porphyry alteration and mineralisation at Kharmagtai are zoned around vertically attenuated early- and inter-mineral quartz monzodiorite dykes and stocks and comprises a complex sequence of calc-potassic, potassic and propylitic assemblages. Hematite dusting is a common alteration product that gives intrusions and the host rocks a distinctive pink-orange colour. Several of the systems have bornite-rich cores, where mineralisation is characterised by high gold grades (0.7 to >5 g/t Au) that zone outward to chalcopyrite-rich and then outer pyritic halos. Early stockwork mineralisation is overprinted by magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias. High-grade magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias form part of a major copper-gold mineralised breccia system with significant exploration potential. The Early Carboniferous porphyry copper-gold systems of the Gurvansaikhan Belt represent a substantial exploration challenge in an area of increasing exploration maturity. This paper summarises the characteristics of the Kharmagtai porphyry system that have helped to define the Early Carboniferous porphyry province of the Gurvansaikhan Belt and discusses implications for future exploration.CITATION:Stewart, A L and Baatar, M, 2015. The wear mechanisms of impregnated diamond drill bit matrices are complex and believed to be the key point in solving drill bit self-sharpening problems. A method has been developed to find the change in c,, the wear rate of matrices having different fracture toughness K_ at the increment of drill pressure P. The worn surfaces of specimens were placed under a scanning electron microscope to examine the wear patterns and wear mechanisms at different pressures, and were compared with the worn surface of a practical drill bit. A model is proposed that within a wide range of pressures there exist two different wear mechanisms and three wear regions for cemented car- bide matrix materials. In region one (linear region), at low pressure, the major wear mechanism is plastic deformation in which the preferential wear of the binder phase of the matrix results in the loss of WC, tung- sten carbide particles. Wear rate is controlled by hardness, H as Archard's formula predicts. Wear enters region two and three (non-linear region) simultaneously as pressure is being increased. Consequently, wear transfers to fracture mechanism in which micro-fracture occurs at the root of wear grooves and the material is removed mainly in piece and mass. It has been shown fracture toughness K,, plays a more important role than hard- ness H. It is concluded that for a specific drilling condition, the pressure on the matrix should be carefully controlled and a balance between hard- ness and toughness of the material is essential for a steady drilling Condition.

A new class of collectors, Mercapto-Benzo-Oxazoles (MBO), exerting selective action on copper sulphides in the presence of Pb, Zn and Fe sulphides (galena, sphalerite and pyrite), has been synthesised in co-operation with Enichem's Donegani Insitute. The collectors have a mixed aliphatic-aromatic structure and contain functional groups which form chelates with copper. Some reagents of this class having hydrocarbon chains of various lengths have been laboratory tested on a complex sulphide ore containing chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite in pyritic gangue. Comparative flotation tests have permitted selection of the best collector for chalcopyrite, namely Methyl-Mercapto- Benzoxazole (MMBO). Systematic flotation tests have been performed with this reagent, varying collector concentration, grain size of the feed, pH and flotation time. The results obtained show that the synthesised collector is much better than potassium-amylxanthate (KAX) as regards selectivity towards Pb and Zn. Moreover, it is possible to work at natural pH (6-7) and the flotation rate is higher. In fact in the rougher stage with 80 g/t of collector at natural pH, a copper grade of 7.14 per cent was obtained with a recovery of 73.87 per cent, while the grade with KAX did not exceed 2.11 per cent for a recovery of 73.54 per cent. The amount of Pb and Zn reporting in the copper concentrate was eight per cent and ten per cent respectively, while with KAX it was no lower than 24.34 per cent and 22.71 per cent in that order. After two minutes flotation a copper grade of 5.2 per cent with 52 per cent recovery could be attained, against a grade of 2.5 per cent and a recovery of 44 per cent in the case of KAX. The efficiency of this new collector has been ascertained on two samples of complex sulphide ores of diverse mineralogical composition.

The global goal of Sustainable Development is not achievable without major changes in the way goods and services are delivered and material needs are satisfied, which requires tremendous innovation in the supply chains and life cycles in which minerals and energy processing take part. Values derived from minerals and metals processing need to be delivered with a fraction of current ecological impacts, which means removing technical obstacles to eliminating waste and emissions in the minerals cycle. The challenge is to find economically attractive ways to get there, through eco-efficiency gains in existing operations, capturing regional synergies, streamlining and greening the materials supply chain, and commercialising new process technology and new products. This paper summarises the outcomes of the Sustainable Resource Processing project, which was designed to provide a strategic analysis of what sustainability means for minerals and metals processing and how that can be effectively translated into technical and business innovation.

The increasing introduction of high capacity mechanical equipment into the coal mines of New South Wales following. tforld War II brought with it problems of roof support. Rapidly advancing headings in difficult country could not be supported with heavy, close,timbering due to the time involved in installation and the reduction of available' space for the movement of machines. _ The installation of low cost, space saving, rapidly installed roof supports became a necessity if the new mechanical equipment wa-s to be allowed to operate at maximum efficiency. As, a result of experience in the United States of America, the system of roof support using steel reinforcing bolts began to find increasing, popularity in the mechanised mines in this State. From the somewhat'crude methods of in- stallation adopted in some of the, early trials, the practice of roof bolting has advanced into a-highly technical operation, requiring care and skill to ensure optimum results.

There are continuing developments in underground narrow vein mining, from innovative mining methods using low-profile equipment to adaptations of current mining methods using equipment such as road-headers. The development of new mining methods and mining equipment has one purpose in mind û to extract narrow reef orebodies keeping dilution to a minimum, whilst maximising mining recovery. Achieving this will increase the head grade of the ore mined and reduce the tonnes delivered to the mill. Narrow vein mining in Australia has been limited to traditional hand held or mechanised drill and blast methods using existing æoff the shelfÆ equipment. Numerous trials have been undertaken using rock cutting technology and lower profile equipment, but these mining trials have not resulted in the full implementation of any new mining method or the adoption of low profile equipment in narrow vein mines as an accepted mining methodology. Mine operators in Canada and South Africa have teamed up with a number of equipment manufacturers and have taken steps to further mechanise and automate the mining of narrow vein orebodies, in particular to increase safety and productivity. The challenge to Australian narrow vein mining projects is to capitalise on work undertaken by overseas mining companies and equipment suppliers and to investigate the adaptation of low profile coal mining machinery to specialised metalliferous mining. With the inevitable fall in metal prices, it is necessary for Australian mine owners and mining contractors to apply these specialised methods and equipment to make narrow vein mining profitable.

At the operation of mine winders in deep shafts considerable oscillations of winding ropes may occur due to elasticity of both wind-ing and balance ropes. The amplitudes of longitudinal oscillations may reach + lm at relatively low frequencies, ranging from 0.5 to 2 c/s. These oscillations may be dangereus for the rope and produce several hazards to the winding installation as a whole. They may cause conside-rable instant accelerations on the pulley and dangerous tensions in ro-pe wires. The excessive acceleration may cause the uncontrolled rope slip on the pulley. Several methods of limitation of these accelera-tions were developed, some of them have been already in control system: of electric drive of the winder. The most simple ones are: a/ limita-tion of the rate of change of acceleration and retardation of the win-der /so called "jerk"/ and b/ the proper selection of regulators of the winder control system to get the optimal control. The trouble in solv-ing the problem of rope oscillations is that the dynamic system of the winder is a nonstationaryone owing to changing distance of conveyance from the pulley. Besides, the system is described by the equations with distributed parameters. The brief discussion of the theory and its practical aspects are enclosed as well.

During the forthcoming reline of No.3 Blast Furnace at the Newcastle Steelworks of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., facilities for the screening and weighing o' coke will be installed. The equipment is needed to optimise the sizing and the quantity of coke immediately prior to it being charged to the furnace. Up till the time the furnace was blown out in November, 1982, coke was charged to the furnace by volume, ie by skip fulls only. This resulted in variation to the ore/coke ratio charged due to bulk density changes and erratic skip filling levels. This in turn affects the heat balance of the furnace and causes fluctuations in hot metal chemistry and temperature. A coke rate penalty has to be paid also. Coke layer thickness in the furnace burden cannot be controlled closely, resulting in loss of control over gas distribution in the furnace. A grizzly type screen was incorporated in the skip loading chute but this ineffective method left a great amount of fines with the coke being charged to the furnace. Furnace permeability was therefore reduced, particularly in the hearth.

A paper describing the treatment of the Mary Kathleen uranium ores must necessarily be historical and confined mainly to a review of the four papers which have already appeared. Couche and Hartley (1958) described the development of the treatment process just prior to the commencement of operations in June, 1958. Harris, Boag and Hemingway (1961) described the treatment during the operations, and Wreford (1965) reviewed all aspects of the mine and mill, when operations were suspended in November, 1963. Harris and Steele ('1960 presented a paper especially describing the radiometric sorting operation. Some hitherto unpublished information is also presented in the paper to describe some of the peculiarities of the ore, indicate reasons for the adoption of the treatment flowsheet, and some interesting problems connected with this treatment.

The problems associated with achieving adequate accuracy for on-site axial flow fan performance measurements are discussed. The ability to test accurately rests heavily on equipment and installation design detail.Aerodynamic performance trials frequently cannot be carried out due mainly to the poor standard of installation design. In a majority of cases this results in unsteady, non-uniform inlet flow conditions to the fan. Details of installation design features and instrumentation, necessary for successful testing, are given for different types of installations and methods of testing. These cover both conventional practice, and new innovations which can provide solutions to difficult problems. Quantitative aspects of flow measurement are considered for various fan and duct configurations.Although the main emphasis is on large primary mine ventilation units which require on-site testing, the principles outlined have wide application to many other types of fan installation.

It is a well known fact that the best method of rock reinforcement is to avoid physical ground support. This goal can be achieved by means of: - Increasing the rock structural strength - Geological definition and forecasting. - Sequencing the excavation - Smooth blasting In many cases however, extra ground support is needed in order to maintain safe working conditions. In an open pit, the structural strength of rock cannot be increased by lowering the pit walls due to economical reasons. Economy demands steeper walls and less waste to be hauled to the dump. The geological conditions can also often be extremely poor and unpredictable. For excavation sequencing and smooth blasting there are good possi- bilities, such as cleaning of the pit walls after the main excavation, arul- ing of long small diameter straight inclined holes, use of smooth blasting techniques and lightened explosives.

The Hamersley Iron ore resources are geologically complex with fluctuations in mineral chemistry. From this resource Hamersley Iron must produce consistently high quality direct shipping products and have the ability to evaluate the effects of changes in demand. In order to achieve these objectives an incremental long term planning technique has been developed. This method reduces the total geological resource statement into a simple, logical sequence of events. A logical sequence of mining increments is defined within individual areas based on a final pit and access system. Increment characteristics are derived manually and from a computer based orebody model. The end product of the technique, an optimum mining schedule, is readily developed from the incremental information. Among its many benefits, this simple technique rapidly provides management with information for policy formulation.

From 1980 to February 1991 the Rosebery concentrator purchased ore from Aberfoyle's Que River Mine. Following the termination of the contract the concentrator reverted to treating Rosebery ore alone. Since that time it has become apparent that the circuit configuration employed was no longer optimum for zinc metallurgy. The circuit was designed to treat a difficult, slow floating sphalerite; however, the opposite was now found to be true. The sphalerite is fast floating and the circuit was cumbersome. During 1992 extensive circuit changes led to the provision of a simple open circuit flow sheet. The circuit is now easier for operators to understand and lends itself to improvements in process control. Middlings streams have been minimised, which produces a far more stable circuit. Significantly, it must be noted that the key to achieving potential results must lie in reducing variations within the process. A significant ore characterisation program has been undertaken, providing an insight into the metallurgical compatability of the ore to be mined. Using the information collected in this program, metallurgical recoveries and grades can now be predicted with a geater accuracy. Ore characterisation data suggests that an improvement from a 54 per cent zinc concentrate to a 57 per cent zinc concentrate should be achievable. By understanding the size-by-size mineral assemblage, a strategy for concentrate grade improvement has been developed. The requirements of the customer must in all cases determine the quality of the product. Pasminco is a fully-integrated zinc producer and as such significant gains can result by tailoring the concentrates to suit the Smelters.

The information age has arrived. In every aspect of life, at the end of the second millennium, computers and information technology have made significant inroads. In mining there has been huge growth in the use of digitally controlled systems. From resource evaluation to mine planning to daily operations, information is being acquired, analysed, modeled and presented, using state-of-the-art information technology. Explosives, too, have moved into the information age. Computer controlled trucks and manufacturing plants have been developed and are now a regular feature on many mine benches. The next challenge for the explosives industry as a whole is to integrate blast initiation with information technology. The benefits are there, both to the supplier and to the end-user. Much has been written in the past about the potential for blast improvement but there are other significant advantages to a digital initiation system. These include security from unauthorised use, stock control and minimisation, reliability through testability and ease of use to name a few. So why is it taking so long? Surely the complexity of an electronic initiation system is far less than that of mobile phones that have been around for a long time. The answer, it seems, lies in the level of new technologies that need to be developed. There are enormous technological hurdles to be overcome in order to put into the market a cost-effective, reliable, user-friendly electronic initiation system. The most significant of these are:Safely and reliably initiating an explosive from an electronic device powered by a small capacitor. Prior to the development of electronic detonators primary initiation of explosives was by shock tube spit or by passing large currents and voltages down a pair of wires. Electronic detonators do not have that luxury. For example the energy stored in a æBeethovenÆ exploder is more than 500 times greater than that available to an electronic detonator. Communicating to a multitude of devices over very long cables installed by miners in harsh conditions. The deployment of an electronic detonator system has been likened to building a large telephone exchange in the rain and getting it to work perfectly first time! New communications protocols needed to be developed and tested. Wiring and connection systems have to be designed to survive the mining environment. In spite of these technological hurdles most of the major explosives manufacturers have persisted with electronic initiation systems and we are now, in 1999, starting to see the results of these multi-million dollar efforts. At SMI we are often asked many questions about this technology. The remainder of this paper seeks to answer those most often asked. As with any business linked to information technology todayÆs breaking news is tomorrowÆs archive and we expect the rate of development and understanding to accelerate as these technologies become accepted by the global mining industry.

Slag cleaning is an important part of the pyrometallurgical operations at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. It is a complex system with many streams of different phases and composition. Some of these streams are very difficult to control and/or monitor. Through the use of a statistical computer package, called Minitab, key relationships affecting the economical operation of the slag cleaning process have been found. Data for the statistical analysis was collected from all possible variables around the appendage.

Any project carries a number of challenges and risks. Inappropriate design, poor project management, time, industrial disputation and capital over runs are all areas which can impact on a project cash flows and return on investment. In the resource Industry you have the added complexity and risk of geology which is difficult to predict and sometimes unforgiving. The Dartbrook Mine was designed and constructed as a high output longwall mine and has overcome a number of hurdles to produce over 2.3 million tonnes for the first year of operation. A number of problems were encountered during construction which resulted in the inseam development being delayed for six months. Dartbrook people have demonstrated they can manage adversity and produce world class results. The mine has been through a very steep learning curve during 1997 and with this experience behind the mine is now producing at an annualised rate of 3.4 MTPA.

A novel system has been developed using computer imaging techniques to make on-line measurements of material on a moving conveyor. Meas- urements of the mass or volume of conveyor materials are important in large open pit mining operations such as those operated by the State Elec- tricity Commission of Victoria (SECV). Such on-line measurements can be used for monitoring and controlling the production and transport of coal or overburden, and to assist in maintaining production levels. This paper describes a conveyor burden volume measurement system which is currently under development at the Research and Development Department of the SECV and although targeted initially for use in the Commission's open cut mines, the system is suitable for use on any open conveyor system. A basic developmental system has been built to demon- strate the viability of the technique used and further work on the system is planned. The measurement technique and the major components which have been developed as part of the system are described, some comparisons are drawn with other existing measurement systems and potential errors and future development are discussed.

Construction and mining sites are often subject to unexpected flooding and extensive delays may occur in locating and installing emergency pumps. This particularly applies to sites located in remote areas. A simple and effective pump, called an air-lift pump, can be built from the equipment available at the working site. The basic req- uirements are a compressed air supply, air hose and conventional water pipes. The air-lift pump is comparatively in- efficient but approximately 35 per cent of the available compressed air power at the site can be applied to pumping. Suprisingly high liquid discharge rates may be obtained in suitable applications. The theoretical and practical consider- ations of the air-lift pump are evaluated and a suggested procedure for the emergency design and construction is outlined. INTRODUCTION. Sudden inundations of water into mine and development excavations require the immediate removal of the water if extensive and often irrepairable damage is to be avoided. One of the most praninent Bouguer anomaly features in the Broken Hill District is the long wavelength high of 10-15 ngals above background which forms a northeast trending, oval zone sane 15 km by 45 km with Broken Hill on its northern gradient. Rock density measurements and modelling indicate that this anomaly can be explained by the presence of generally relatively higher density meta- sediments extending from the surface to a depth of about 2000 m. The regional Bouguer anomaly data show that the Willyama Block and Euriowie Block are mostly overlain by a fairly smooth Bouguer anomaly high in the range 5-15 mgals, whilst the surrounding younger sediment covered areas, including the Mundi Mundi Plain, Murray Basin fringe and Bancannia Trough, are mostly overlain by lows which range to minus 30 mgals. Thus in terms of the gravity pattern the Willyama and Euriowie Blocks form a fairly continuous and haogeneous entity. However, the 5-10 mgals relative low over part of the Torrowangee Synclinorial Zone indicates that the Adelaidean System metasediments are in aggregate slightly less dense than the Willyama Supergroup metasediments. The low can be modelled to indicate a basement link between the Broken Hill and Euriowie Blocks at 1000-2000 m depth.

Sandvik Tamrock Corp has developed an underground rock flow simulation tool OPTIMINEÖ which is a direct simulation tool for matching suitable technology in rock material flow for underground mine layouts and production requirements. The tool gives the possibility of determining intersections, limitations and critical points in the layout and working procedures at an early stage of a new mine/mining area planning process. The tool combines the supplier machine knowledge with operational know-how and mine environment. It can be used for identifying the effect of an individual incident such as the effect of one additional turn in a continuous loading cycle to the daily capacity. This paper discusses the way the OPTIMINEÖ simulation tool operates, the benefits and restrictions, and reviews how it simulates some example cases and how the mines benefit from the tool in maximising the performance and optimising the mobile fleet, scheduling work and fine-tuning the layout.
