Maintaining and improving the economics of open pit mining in the future requires understanding of the characteristics of open pit mining that are different to other mining or business activities, designing mines in the first place to be less susceptible to changes in these important characteristics, and adopting strategies which yield reliable returns despite unforeseen change. Planning and production personnel require guidelines and performance standards that are based on sound economics not solely on production criteria. The guidelines adopted for long-term implementation must assume a declining price for mineral products along with declining real costs, with research efforts directed at development of both evolutionary and revolutionary ideas aimed at implementation. Decision-making must focus on risk and probability criteria rather than just simple return-on-investment criteria, and the approach for management of personnel must support the higher level of communication essential for fast decision-making in the new environment of continual change.

Uncertainty in prediction and modelling of geological (physical) ore continuity in geometrically complex ore deposits is a key risk factor in mining. Reducing geometric uncertainty of hard-boundary ore/waste contacts and related geological features improves the efficiency of local mineral resource estimation and reserve calculation, mine/stope planning, ore control and in-mine exploration. Detailed underground mapping of serial-level drives provides a continuous record of the characteristics and contact configuration of ore, as well as crucial ore-related geological features that are required to resolve geometrical variability when closely spaced drilling proves inadequate or is cost-prohibitive. The mapping-based approach described in this paper re-establishes the focus on the geology of the orebody by incorporating high-value, detailed geologic mine mapping information. Mapped ore-related configurations and relationships, recorded on a succession of faces or on a series of levels, provide the basis for 3D interpolation and extrapolation of the local geologic continuity of an orebody. Correlative points representing locations of key ore-related geologic features on each face or level are linked by 3D polylines or trajectories forming a coherent geometrical framework. The coherent progression of geometric changes mapped by these trajectories reveals the overall ‘dynamic’ of the geometrical framework, as well as the spatial tendencies of its geological constituents. Distinct sets of ore control trajectories are selected from within the framework and are used in the construction of alternative geological ore continuity models. As mining proceeds, alternative models are evaluated, and are then either refined or rejected. The geometrical framework is used to evaluate theoretical models and practical heuristics, focus exploration targeting and inform and guide all aspects of mine geology in active mines. This approach also lends itself to analysis of global ore continuity in the re-evaluation of mature or abandoned mines. Its use is particularly effective in geometrically complex orebodies such as the West Branch orebody and the orebodies of No 2 mine of the Balmat-Edwards-Pierrepont zinc district, which are used to illustrate the method. It is a common misconception that the grant of mining tenure, whether it be an Exploration Permit, Mineral Development Licence or Mining Lease, will entitle the holder to access all land within it in order to explore or mine. The ability for miners to access their tenure in order to undertake activities is critical to the industry. While significant time and energy is quite rightly dedicated to resolving native title and cultural heritage issues before the commencement of mining operations, the same cannot always be said for addressing potential impediments that arise as a result of the overlap between mining and other tenures. Miners should be aware of the overlaps that occur with other tenure and the impact of these overlaps on the minerÆs ability to explore or produce from the area. The existence of an overlap with petroleum tenure, nature refuges, national parks, wild river areas or reserves such as aboriginal land leases are all likely to have an impact on the minerÆs ability to access the area and conduct activities. In some instances, such as an overlap with petroleum tenure, Queensland legislation encourages the miner to reach agreement with the holders of the overlapping tenure. However, in other instances, such as an overlap with a national park, mining tenure is unlikely to be granted at all. This paper summarises the impacts and impediments that arise as a result of overlaps of tenure that are likely to affect mining operations. It also provides examples of how these impediments can, if possible, be overcome under Queensland legislation.

The Mt Muro gold and silver deposit in Central Kalimantan has been in production since December 1994. The geology is characterised by narrow high-grade lodes containing gold and significant amounts of silver. From a largely untrained workforce in the grade control department, production per crew and per geologist has tripled during the three years of production. Grade control drilling evolved from blast hole sampling to reverse circulation sampling. National geologists are trained in basic modeling procedures. A fully integrated reporting and reconciliation system was programed and implemented.

In this paper, life cycle assessment methodology has been used to assess the variations in water use associated with different metal production and processing routes and provide insights into the value derived from water usage in the minerals sector. Using water consumption data derived from the literature it has been shown that the æcradle-to-gateÆ water consumption (or embodied water) for production of the various metals considered in the study ranged from 2.9 m3/t for steel up to 252 087 m3/t for gold. The results largely reflect the grade of the initial ore used to produce each metal, and can be approximated by the following equation:W = 167.7 G - 0.9039 where: W = embodied water (m3/t refined metal) G = grade of ore used to produce metal (per cent metal) The study showed that indirect water consumption in the metal production life cycle, in particular that due to electricity generation, can make a significant contribution to the embodied water value, eg aluminium production. When expressed in terms of m3/t ore, the results for all metals considered indicated that the embodied water is roughly, on average, three times the water consumption of the mining and concentration stage. It was also shown that the economic value per m3 of water consumed for the minerals industry exceeds that for the agricultural and industrial sectors, supporting the view that allocating water resources to the minerals industry has a strong underlying economic basis. Water reforms currently taking place in Australia aim to address issues such as competition for water access, reduced security of supply and increase in cost. Consequently the minerals industry, along with others, can be expected to come under increasing pressure to reduce fresh or raw water use and to integrate water use across sectors. While water recycling is an obvious candidate to help reduce water consumption in the minerals industry, issues such as water quality, among others, will influence the extent to which this can be achieved. In addition, wastewater volumes can be minimised using techniques such as pinch analysis to establish and use the minimum water requirement for the process. The use of dry or near-dry processing technologies, for which the demand for water is small or zero, may be a more radical solution to the water consumption problem; however, it is possible that the introduction of dry processing would bring with it a new set of problems, including dust.

In the 1989 best-seller The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the author, Stephen Covey, highlights the importance of maintaining not only ‘production’, but also, ‘production capacity’. When operating a modern flotation concentrator, production is often measured in terms of concentrate tonnage, tonnes milled and plant utilisation. There are very few metrics that focus directly on flotation equipment condition in relation to performance, which is analogous to Covey’s production capacity principal. It is evident on many mine sites that flotation equipment condition is not monitored on a proactive basis and that the prevailing culture is to wait for a failure, before addressing an issue.This paper discusses examples of how poor equipment condition can lead to production loss through poor metallurgical performance. Actual examples are given where these problems have occurred in operating plants. At the Nikkel og Olivin nickel mine near Narvik, Norway, Outokumpu has been the operator since 1993. The mine was opened in 1989 and in 1992 Outokumpu commenced operations to secure concentrate deliveries to Harjavalta's nickel smelter in Finland. Annual production is about 740 000 tonnes of nickel ore grading 0.5 per cent Ni, about 25 000 tonnes of nickel concentrate and about 2800 tonnes of nickel metal. All production comes from underground operations which makes Nikkel og Olivin AS perhaps the lowest grade underground nickel mine in the world today. Production is currently from one of two orebodies, which is known as the Western orebody. The Eastern orebody was worked out by 1995. During Outokumpu's operational period the Western orebody has been delineated and taken to production. The underground exploration and definition drilling involved about 15 000 in of diamond drilling, which was carried out during a nine-month period. Following this a feasibility study was undertaken and production commenced. Improvements were made to the mining methods. Previously the mine utilised open pit equipment underground and this resulted in an enormous amount of additional tunnelling. Grade control and ore delineation were previously based on sparse diamond drilling and all geological information was processed manually. The improvements included the use of underground sludge drilling to increase the amount of geological information, the of a new computer system for grade control and mine planning, new automated underground longhole drilling equipment and the of underground mining equipment which reduced the size of the drives. These changes produced a marked increase in the efficiency of the underground Mine.

BHP is the world's largest copper concentrate producer with production from mines at Escondida (Chile), Ok Tedi (Papua New Guinea), and Island Copper (Canada). The entire concentrate production is further processed into refined copper by third-party smelters around the world. In anticipation of an expansion in the global copper concentrate production capacity and a corresponding increase in treatment and refining charges by copper smelters, BHP has continuously evaluated various opportunities for downstream copper processing. An expansion in the Escondida mine production, combined with BHP's interest in processing some of its concentrate production on-shore in Chile, ultimately resulted in the development of the Escondida Leach Process. This process was specifically developed for higher grade concentrates, such as from Escondida. An ammoniacal lixiviant and air are used under ambient conditions to leach less than one-half of the contained copper values. After solid-liquid separation, the solution is subjected to solvent extraction regenerating the ammoniacal lixiviant and the copper loaded organic phase is stripped in spent electrolyte returned from the electrowinning plant where ultra-high quality SX-EW copper is produced. The solid leach residue can, if required, be upgraded by flotation to produce a high-grade copper concentrate with improved fuel values and a pyrite tail for disposal. After an 18-month bench and pilot plant scale program and an engineering feasibility study, Minera Escondida Limitada decided to build an 80 000 tonnes of copper per year facility near Antofagasta, Chile. The installed investment cost amounted to around $160 million. The plant went into commercial production in November 1994 and better than 99.9995 per cent Cu cathodes were produced right from the start. BHP believes that the process and the commercial plant are an excellent example of a novel approach advancing the science of copper metallurgy in harmony with present demands for environmentally sound processes and high quality products.

In some parts of Australia, mine air cooling may not be needed until a depth of 1300 m below surface is reached. In other locations, it may be essential at a depth of only 300 m below surface. The reasons for these differences are multifaceted. This paper discusses the main factors and describes a simple method to assess whether or not mine air cooling will be required. The method uses a graphical relationship that considers depth below surface, geothermal gradient, surface climatic conditions and directness of the mine intake routes. This relationship has been developed, tested and refined over a period of more than ten years using data collected from most of Australia’s deeper metalliferous mines. The method provides a ‘first-pass’ indication of whether more detailed cooling studies may be needed. Perhaps more importantly, the method’s underpinning by benchmarking against other mines improves confidence in the assessment results. Two commercially available through-the-Earth (TTE) communications systems were evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. One system utilises magnetic field (H-field) antennae while the other system utilises electric field (E-field) antennae to achieve communication. A large portion of this mine is overlain by an inactive gas-oil field composed of densely spaced wells. This feature provided a unique opportunity to determine the impact of cased wells on both TTE technologies. The following communication modes were investigated: surface to underground, underground to surface, underground to underground and real-time two-way communications. Standard deployments of the TTE systems using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations under certain circumstances. As a result, the design and deployment that will optimise TTE transmissions are unique to each system and to the specific area of the mine. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. Research and development into alternate gold and precious metals adsorbents has resulted in the development of a new technology named the AUROSAVE adsorption process (ARGOSAVE'" for high silver con- tent ores). Adsorbents called VITROKELE'" can be tailored for either Gold I (cyanide leach) or Gold III (halide leach) applications. VITROKELE consists of a chemically synthetic adsorbent carried on an inert substrate, often a polystyrene bead. It is suitable for both in- pulp and in-solution use. VITROKELE adsorbent offers certain advan- tages over both carbon and ion exchange resin adsorbents. This paper describes testwork on Australian ores and commercial solu- tions obtained from operating Australian plants demonstrating the kinetic loading characteristics, elution methods and other operating parameters of VITROKELE adsorbent in the cyanide system. Brief reference is made to VITROKELE in the Gold III system.

The Latrobe Valley brown coal deposits are one of Australia's major energy resources with measured and indicated reserves amounting to some 162 billion tonnes. Economically recoverable reserves are estimated at some 65 billion tonnes, 47 billion tonnes of which are classified as available for mining (VBCC (1983)). These deposits contain one of the lowest grade fuels used anywhere in the world. Typical Net Wet Specific Energy values range from 6 to 9 MJ/kg. Despite the low energy value of the raw coal, the Latrobe Valley deposits represent approximately 90% of Victoria's indigenous non-renewable energy resources. Utilisation of this vast primary energy resource has been a key factor in the economic development of Victoria.

The Wisemans Creek derelict mine site is located in native forest approximately 150 km west of Sydney. Mean annual rainfall at Bathurst, 20 km to the north, is 634 mm and reasonably distributed throughout the year, with slightly more rain falling in the summer months. Evaporation is 1350 mm per annum and considerably exceeds rainfall in all but the winter months (May to August). This results in a water deficit for much of the year. Groundwater is relatively deep, as it has not been intercepted in the shallow open cut workings. Investigation of the groundwater regime was beyond the scope of the current study. Mining has taken place on the site for almost 100 years, during which copper, talc and gold have been sequentially extracted from surface and shallow underground workings. The site is now characterised by the presence of small open pits, unprotected shafts and adits, mullock heaps and an unconfined tailing deposit from a small cyanidation plant. From a distance, the mine area is visible because of two distinct steep bare slopes below the relatively small mine workings and mullock heaps. The mining area was characterised in terms of its environmental, safety and heritage issues. Mullock from the early copper mining was found to be acid forming and leachate from this, combined with clearing of timber, has most likely resulted in death of vegetation below the heaps. The mullock also contains elevated concentrations of heavy metals. The gold tailing is apparently benign and not acid forming, although there are indications of oxidation and acid formation in the derelict gold open cut. Oxidation of the acid forming mullock still appears to be taking place even after being exposed to the atmosphere for at least 50 years, resulting in continued contamination of the slopes below the heaps with heavy metals. The concentrations of metals decreases with distance below the mullock heaps and also is confined to the ground surface the further away from the mullock, providing further evidence to support the theory that the mullock is the source of contamination. Despite this continuing contamination, its spread beyond the immediate mining area appears to have been limited because of the relatively dry climate, with only intermittent rainfall and stream flows. Irregular storm flows in the nearby creek could also have washed any contaminated soil some distance from the site and beyond the area investigated in this study. Remediation of the site and restoration of vegetation on the bare slopes will therefore depend on elimination of the source of acid and metals. Options for remediation, focussing on minimising cost by retaining the materials on or close to the site, are identified. The volume of the open cuts would appear to be close to that required for burial of the acid-forming mullock, thereby removing the source of surface contamination while keeping it above the groundwater table. However, implementation of this remediation plan will depend on the availability of funds to undertake the work through the New South Wales GovernmentÆs Derelict Mines Program.

Prediction of rock cuttability by various excavation machines such as tunnel boring machines, road headers, rippers, picks, roller disc cutters, excavators, etc is of major concern to both civil and mining engineers and rock mechanics. In principle, the design of a rock cutting tool is based on achieving maximum excavation with minimum input energy, minimum applied force, minimum equipment weight and volume and, more importantly, minimum tool wear. When a rock material is indented by the force of a cutting tool and then unloaded several material zones form underneath and around the tool. As the tool moves into the rock the volume of its associated rock cavity (ie volume of displaced rock) expands and depending on the indenter's shape various phenomena may occur. Immediately beneath the tool a small zone in which the stress state is more or less hydrostatic, is formed which is underlain by an inelastic, or damaged, material zone. Both size and shape of this damaged zone control the magnitude of the indentation force and the chip formation mechanism during unloading. The rock is unable to store the whole strain energy induced by the tool and consequently the extra energy is expended either in forming new fracture surfaces and/or in plastic deformation in the damaged zone. Therefore, it is not surprising to see that both perfect-elastic and rigid-plastic constitutive models are not generally suitable for modelling indentation of rocks. In contrast elastoplastic constitutive models are more appropriate as they can include both elastic and plastic deformations (Kral et al, 1993). Elastic solutions for several half-space indentation problems can be found in most text books on elasticity and in particular in Timoshenko and Goodier (1951), Sneddon, (1951), Poulos and Davis (1974) and Johnson (1985a). If a failure criterion, eg the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, is applied to delimit elastic solutions for indentation problems, a lower bound limit of the applied indentation force (for a given indentation depth) can be estimated. It may be noted that elastic analyses, without any delimiting failure criteria, normally overestimate the indentation force. Plastic solutions for a few indentation problems may be found in Hill (1950), Johnson, (1985a) and Alehossein et al (1992). When analysing the behaviour of indented rocks the choice of an appropriate constitutive model describing effectively the behaviour of the rock at various stages and phases during indentation is a challenging issue. Several questions need to be answered before starting an effective analysis. The first question is of course: Which one of these is more appropriate for modelling zones underneath and around a cutter, elasticity or plasticity theory, continuum damage mechanics or fracture mechanics, and what is the bridging link between these various theories? Which mode is more dominant in fracturing rock, tensile or shear mode? What governs the mechanism of chip formation? What is the function, shape and the behaviour of the pulverised zone that forms just underneath a cutter? Is the hydrostatic stress state assumption reasonable for this zone? How does the rock change during the absorption and dissipation of the input energy and how does the indentation energy vary with rock type and depth of penetration? How can we model the damaged zone under the indenter? Furthermore does a plastic material form beneath the pulverised zone? When and how do radial and ring cracks form around and under an indenter?

Several mineral resources have been recognised to alkaline igneous rocks. In general, these mineralisations present low P grades, so a complex concentration process is required to achieve commercial grade concentrates. This process is guided not only by the ore characteristics, such as apatite grain size and liberation degree, gangue minerals and slimes content, but also by different apatite varieties, iron oxi-hydroxide surface coating and roughness. The main techniques applied to apatite and phosphate ore characterisation, such as optical microscopy, cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), surface techniques and magnetic separation are discussed, aiming to evaluate distinct apatite varieties and their technological behaviour.

The discovery of gold mineralization at the Manhattan mercury mine, Napa and Yolo counties, California in 1978 was the result of applying a new exploration ore deposit model in a region previously unprospected for gold. This discovery, the McLaughlin gold mine, owned and operated by Home-stake Mining Company, is a classic epithermal mercury-hot springs-gold deposit currently producing approximately 7,776,000 grams of gold annually.The exploration program that led to this discovery was based on a mercury-hot springs-gold genetic model. The model was developed using basic knowledge of ore-forming processes plus careful field observations made during examination of many known precious metal districts in. the Western U.S.A. Theoretically, hot spring systems could host gold deposits and, indeed, gold in these environments had been recognized for years. However, at the time of the McLaughlin discovery, it was not known to occur in sufficient quantities to inspire geologists to explore hot spring systems specifically for gold. Field observations recognized the presence of hot spring deposits and mercury mineralization asso-ciated with precious metal districts, (Bodie, California being a type example), and this associ-ation prompted the development of a hypothetical model. Subsequent exploration activities were directed towards the examination of mercury mines and prospects as potential targets for gold deposits. The model envisioned hot spring deposits (sinter) containing mercury mineralization at the surface with anomalous gold values grading downward into significant ore grade gold values.

Open pit mining at Bingham Canyon commenced in 1904 and about two billion tonnes of ore have been extracted since then. There remain just under one billion tonnes of ore in the pit and this will be mined by 2015. Because the porphyry system extends below the ultimate pit limits, Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation initiated a study in 1997 to determine the viability of underground mining. The study was initiated at that time because the results were to be used to compare the economics of a further pit expansion to that of an underground mine. If a pit expansion was viable then overburden removal would have to start in the near future. This paper is a summary of the work that was carried out for the underground study. Block cave mining was determined to be the most appropriate method to mine the deposit. Two block cave areas have been planned with a total production rate of 72 500 tpd. Additional sources of ore will come from skarn orebodies that are associated with the porphyry deposit. The geology of the deposits is described together with the geotechnical techniques that were used to characterise the rock in the absence of more detailed data that are normally available. A general description of the mine plan is given along with the reasons for selecting the particular methodology used. The study was completed at the end of 1998 and demonstrated the viability of underground mining at Bingham Canyon. Funds have been approved for further drilling and technical studies, which will lead up to a feasibility study in 2004/5.

"Continuous improvement on metallurgical treatment plants is possible only when good data and analysis of the data are available. Good data implies appropriate and accurate mass measurement coupled with good sampling practices and accurate chemical analysis especially when carrying out monthly metallurgical metal reconciliations. Adequate characterisation of key samples (eg tailings, feed, concentrates and others) at timely intervals is an important part of a good continuous improvement program. The data from this will help identify opportunities to improve operation performance and thus profitability. When Matthew Flinders entered in his log `This land forms the South side of the large bight; and besides projecting beyond the coast line, and being a little higher than usual is remarkable for having some reddish cliffs in it, and deep water near the shore', he was commenting on the deposit of bauxite at a place now known as Weipa. This sighting took place on 9 November 1802, and probably represents the first direct entry in Australia acknowledging a potential mineral deposit. Flinders, of course, had no idea as to what he was looking at, nor did he land to determine its content. If he had, he probably would have had no idea of the substance, and even less knowledge of its use. Nothing further was done to this for about 150 years.
