Challenges facing middle management in the 1980's and beyond are not confined to business matters such as industrial relations, government and legal constraints, corporate takeovers, and commodity marketing. More particularly they deal with people issues and the interrelationship of corporate/ family relationships. There is a need for corporations to acknowledge the growing conflict between corporate/family roles being brought about by such matters as equal opportunity, double professional marriage partnerships, personal mobility and the increasing stress faced by managers as a result of current demands and expectations being placed on them. While the main responsibility for managing professional life as well as the relationship between professional and private life rests with the individual executive, corporations nevertheless have a major responsibility to assist these executives in this management process. Corporations in Australia are taking steps to address this situation but much more needs to be done. This was highlighted in the March 1985 "Middle Management" course with its associated Spouses Programme presented jointly by Australian Mineral Foundation and The Australian Administrative Staff College. Effective communication is at the heart of the matter but no amount of training on this subject will bear fruit unless there is an associated commitment by executives to improve the effectiveness of their communi- cation process both in their corporate and family roles.

The complexity in treating environmentally harmful impurities such as As, Sb, Bi from the base metal matte or metal in the smelting stage are responsible for the high cost of the refining process. The impurity capacities (such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth) of slags were calculated a priori using Reddy-Blander (RB) model. The capacity predictions were for a wide range of matte and slag compositions in copper smelting conditions. The calculated impurities capacities and impurity distribution ratios results are in good agreement with the available experimental and industrial slags data. The a priori knowledge of impurities is useful for reduction of energy consumption and enhanced environmental control in the current and future non-ferrous metal processes.

Aberfoyle's Hellyer Division has filtered very fine flotation concentrates using two different makes of pressure filter. At the Luina concentrator a Larox pressure filter was used to treat a combined Pb + Zn or bulk concentrate. At the Hellyer concentrator two Lasta pressure filters are being used to filter copper/silver, lead, zinc and bulk concentrates. Operating parameters and performance at both operations are described. In both concentrators it was found that correct cloth selection was critical and that cloth failures contributed significantly to downtime. Thorough preventative maintenance progammes were required to ensure adequate availability of both makes of filter.

The BHP Billiton Cannington mine uses sequential flotation to treat a silver, lead and zinc ore supplied from an underground mine. The final products from the process plant are a silver rich lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. Operational history of plant performance highlighted that the majority of valuable metal losses to final tailing occurred in the -5 ¦m fraction. Research completed on the flotation characteristics of this size fraction in plant feed resulted in the development of a split flotation process to improve the silver and lead mineral recoveries. Construction of a $A 9.5 million brownfield project to install the new split flotation circuit at Cannington was completed in July 2002. The circuit consists of three stages of cyclone classification to recover the ultra fine material to a final cyclone overflow stream, conditioning of this pulp to achieve optimal process conditions, and conventional rougher and three stage cleaner flotation to produce a silver rich lead concentrate. The rougher tail from the new circuit is recombined with the cyclone underflow streams and processed through the original lead-zinc flotation circuit. This paper discusses the circuit design, material properties, material selection for components of the circuit, operational practices and requirements to ensure the circuit succeeded in meeting production targets. Since 1981 two single entry roadways have been driven at Ellalong Colliery for a total distance of 1 030 metres. They were driven at a height of 1.73 metres within the 3.7 metres thick Greta Seam using a Dosco In-Seam Miner (I.S.M.). Ventilation of the drivage was accomplish- ed by an exhausting fan in series with steel ducting and flexible ducting in the immediate face area. The air quantities provided at the face were more than adequate to comply with the requirements of -the auxiliary fan rules and the Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended. The experience gained in these drivages demonstrated that the ventilation of long single entry headings can be practically and safely achieved using existing equipment.

The potential for iron ore in the Central African Archean belts has received much less attention by comparison to their equivalents in other cratonic regions of West Africa, South Africa, Australia and Brazil. Historically, iron ore is known to occur in South Cameroon and North Gabon with significant iron ore deposits (eg Mbalam in Cameroon, Avima in the Republic of Congo, Minkébé, Bélinga and Boka-boka in Gabon), having been the subject of geological exploration programs carried out by government institutions and exploration companies. Although the presence of strong aeromagnetic anomalies, undeniably related to the presence of greenstone belt formations, has been recognised, this study is the first attempt to assess the potential of banded iron formations (BIF) in the Northern part of the Gabonese Republic in the region between Minvoul and Minkébé (>10.000 km2). Deep lateritic weathering, inaccessible equatorial rain forest and high operational costs are some of the reasons why only limited exploration has been undertaken in the area. This work aims to improve the geological knowledge and to highlight the potential for iron ore of the eastern margin of the Ntem Complex units dated between 3.3–2.7 Ga. Field work showed a series of mafic rocks (amphibolite, anorthosite and gabbro), schist and BIF (described as itabirites in neighbouring areas). Samples from Minvoul BIF showed an extensive and deep weathering to powdery hematite revealing the presence, in thin sections, of iron oxides including magnetite, hematite and martite, primary and secondary quartz, garnet, hornblende, anthophyllite, cummingtonite and epidote. Mineral assemblages and coarse grain size suggest a metamorphic grade ranging from medium to upper amphibolite facies. The existence of known economic iron ore deposits in neighbouring regions combined with an extensive weathering enrichment process are promising factors for potential iron ore discovery in this remote area.

Customer requirements concerning the final products of iron mines are extremely stringent. Because of this, there is an ever-increasing need for mine operators to monitor and strictly control the quality of their product. This quality, as measured by the stockpile grade variability, is the result of a very complex process, where natural characteristics (the orebody and its geology) are transformed through the mining technique (open pit, shovel and truck fleet, blending into stockpile). The only way to reproduce and hence to control the variability of such a system, which is composed of several interactive sub-processes, is by simulation. A complete simulation of a Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd (HI) ore deposit has been undertaken to forecast the impact and cost of various mining methods, mining schedules and product stockpile sizes on variability of chemical and physical characteristics of the products. The mining simulation was made on a conditionally simulated orebody. On a range of criteria, the simulation was considered to fulfil the objectives set and was a valuable aid to analysis of product grade variability, operating and capital costs, selection of equipment, mine scheduling and setting of product grade targets.

In many underground mining applications where-dry fill is used, only a token acknowl- edgement of the fill properties is given. It is the aim of this paper to induce mining engineers to consider dry fill as an engineer- ing material rather than a mass to place in unwanted voids. Dry fill is generally cheap, inert and readily available, but it can still contribute to mining performance. In particular, the choice of the dry fill becomes more critical as stope sizes increase, controlled choked draws are used or pillar recovery introduced. Selection must be initiated from an evaluation of the role of the fill in the mining operation. In most cases the fill must be chosen before quarrying begins and an investigation must be made of available sources and appropriate quarrying methods. Some of the properties of fill are described together with evaluation techniques. A com- parison of placement conditions is limited by the complexities of material flow and degrada- tion: However, field and model tests can aid interpretation in these cases. Examples are given of aspects of dry fill selection and their incorporation in mining design.

The manufacture of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is not only energy-intensive but also releases a significant volume of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. In addition, OPC in concrete often causes premature deterioration that affects the durability of concrete structures. This paper explores an alternative to OPC concrete called geopolymer concrete.The present research utilises low calcium (class F) fly ash as the source material to produce geopolymer concrete. Several factors that affect the mix design process such as mix proportion, curing time, and curing temperature have been studied. In addition, the long-term properties such as drying shrinkage, creep, and exposure to sulfate attack are also being investigated.The test data presented in this paper reveal that geopolymer concrete possesses high compressive strength, undergoes very little drying shrinkage and moderately low creep, and shows excellent resistance to sulfate attack. The result is extremely promising and demonstrates the sustainability of geopolymer concrete as a construction material for a sustainable future.

Slope stability has now become a practical tool in the design and oper- ation of open pits. The stability of rock slope depends on many factors, including not only structural geology, the existence of weak layers, ground- water, blasting and weathering, but also the virgin stress field. This paper presents an application of a numerical method to investigate the effect of the virgin stress on slope stability. The finite element method is employed to simulate the excavation of open pits. Redistributed stress fields in the slope of open pit are computed for several different virgin stress fields. Based on the redistributed stress fields, the shear force which tends to produce sliding of a rock mass and the frictional resistance to sliding are evaluated. The possibility of potential failure is assessed by the limit equilibrium method. The combination of the finite element method with the equilibrium method provides a powerful analytical tool for slope stability. The significant effect of virgin stress on the stability of slopes is shown by studying a typical case.

The homologous series of saturated fatty acids investigated in this study generally show a steady gradation of properties with chain length. The solution pKa values were assumed constant at 4.9, however reported pKa values could be lower or higher. Hematite flotation response and surface pressure for aqueous solutions of these fatty acids were measured as a function of pH. For the shorter chain fatty acids, the undissociated acid was shown to be the predominant surface active species with flotation, supplemented by the physical adsorption of acid anions as the chain length increased. The reduced solubility of the longer fatty acid carbon chains made these reagents ineffective as flotation agents. The maximum flotation response of hematite using tetradecanoic acid corresponded with the precipitation edge of the reagent. The results show that the values of surface pressure of the surfactants are not always a good indication of their effectiveness as flotation collectors.

The field of astrometallurgy is a growing area of study. Metal production on the Moon is likely to begin in less than a decade as major space agencies such as NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and CNSA (China National Space Administration) are preparing to construct permanent lunar bases. The utilisation of regolith to generate oxygen and metals is expected to be important in the development of a sustainable lunar habitat. This paper provides an overview of potential metallurgical processing methods for lunar conditions, emphasising the impact of lunar factors on slag chemistry. The interaction between regolith and the extracted metals, as well as their impact on slag composition and refractory performance, are critical considerations in metal production on the lunar surface. The initial research on lunar metallurgical technologies is focused on oxygen extraction and Fe-Si alloys are reported as the by-products of these processes. This paper delves into the fundamental thermodynamics associated with the carbothermic reduction of lunar regolith. Thermodynamic analysis using the FactSage™ ver 8.2 software package indicates that the Fe-Si alloy can be produced as a metallic product from the lunar regolith at temperatures ranging from 1400°C to 1600°C under terrestrial conditions. However, under ultra-high vacuum conditions (3 × 10-15 bar) on the Moon, the required operating temperature for producing ferrosilicon would be significantly reduced. Thermodynamic modelling results indicate that under lunar vacuum conditions, Fe-Si alloys only exist as solid phases at lower temperatures below 650°C. At higher temperatures, both Fe and Si are expected to be present in the gas phase. In this work, the carbothermic reduction of the Lunar Mare Simulant (LMS-1) is conducted under terrestrial conditions. The findings indicate that the process can readily yield Fe-Si alloys with 7–10 wt per cent Si at 1600°C. Additionally, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis of the resulting Fe-Si alloy indicates the presence of phosphorus up to 1 wt per cent.

Mercury is precipitated from weakly acidic sulphuric acid plant waste liquor at the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited. Factors determining the choice of process and reagent, as well as details of process development including scale- up, and the time scale of implementation are outlined. The plant is designed for a maximum flow of 120 m3/h.of liquor containing mercury and saturated with sulphur dioxide. Mercury is precipitated by fluidised beds of aluminium pellets contained in lead columns. Liquor is then clarified with plate and frame presses. Experimental work on the mercury precip- itation reaction was conducted in three phases involving a scale-up of 100 times in equipment size. Extensive pilot filtration work was carried out on a 1 m2 press. Scale-up of 120 times was required for specification of plant filters. The basis of scale-up is outlined.

"In sulfide nickel deposits throughout the world, pentlandite and pyrrhotite are commonly found together along with varying amounts of chalcopyrite and platinum group minerals (PGMs). The mafic or ultramafic host silicates associated with the sulfide mineralisation commonly exhibit a complex assemblage of magnesium bearing silicates, many of which themselves contain significant nickel. Four types of ore are proposed, each presenting their own processing challenges. These are: economic grades of Ni, Cu and PGE (platinum group element) in a pyrrhotite-bearing sulfide deposit, with low pyrrhotite to pentlandite ratios  economic grades of Ni, Cu and PGE in a pyrrhotite-bearing sulfide deposit, with moderate to high pyrrhotite to pentlandite ratios uneconomic high pyrrhotite: low tenor deposits low-grade low sulfide, high MgO ± PGE deposits that can sometimes be economically mined and processed.The grades and recoveries of nickel concentrates produced from sulfide ores can be significantly impacted by the ore mineral texture, the nickel tenor of the sulfides, and the polytype of pyrrhotite which may be either hexagonal (non-magnetic) or monoclinic (magnetic). The mineralogy of the silicates is also of great importance, especially the magnesium silicates and those which tend to produce particles which are asbestiform or which affect slurry viscosity. Other magnesium silicates such as serpentine carry nickel in solid solution, limiting the recovery entitlement of nickel by flotation because serpentine is not amenable to sulfide flotation mechanisms. Differences in plant flow sheets and reagent assemblages are required to effectively separate these minerals.Experience from a variety of plant operations and from extensive flow sheet development programs are discussed. This paper describes a hybrid ventilation system, which uses secondary fans that also act as de-facto primary fans to extract fresh airflow from the mine intake raise system. Also discussed are the associated problems such as uncontrolled recirculation, inadequate decline airflow, fire safety issues, prolonged blast fume clearance times, high air temperatures in main access routes, neutralisation of mine air cooling by heat from secondary distribution fans, increased ventilation system complexity, reduced flexibility and high pressure differentials (which cause safety issues with personnel access and reduce secondary ventilation system performance).Practical suggestions are provided on options to avoid these problems listed.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2013. Methane is present in varying degrees in nearly all underground coal mining operations. At mixtures with air near 5-15% it is explosive and consequently since it is not usual for these levels of contamination to be reached in the general body of a mine ventilation system it is not unusual to experience it in specific places. On longwall faces the most used power loader is the shearer machine and because of its general shape, situation and operation it is likely that all the factors which are required to cause a frictional ignition can be present. This paper makes a general appreciation of the causes of these ignitions and methods which are and have been used to control these situations on and around these machines.

The increasing exhaustion of raw materials entails the exploitation of poorer orebodies where the target mineral occurs frequently in a very fine dissemination. Consequently it is necessary to grind more and more fine to achieve an adequate mineral liberation. In other words, it is of fundamental importance to know what size one should grind in order to avoid the following detrimental situations: 1. Excessive grinding - giving rise to the generation of ultra-fine slime particles which may be lost in the ulterior concentration process and simultaneously leading to higher energy consumption. 2. Incomplete grinding - giving rise to insufficient liberation and consequently leading to considerable losses of the valuable components in the tailings. Although this issue constitutes one of the most important steps in mineral processing, little research has been done compared to other processes, mainly due to the fastidious experimental work required. This paper describes a complete and integrated system of image analysis, where some algorithms to determine automatically the degree of li beration, for different levels of grinding, are proposed. These algorithms, mainly based on mathematical morphology theory were tested with images obtained from polished sections of different grain size fractions. Cases studies on a complex sulphide ore from an important copper and tin deposit located in the South of Portugal are discussed. Samples of the unbroken ore are also studied by image analysis to predict the degree of liberation obtained according to the fineness of grinding.

Open pit operators are facing a number of challenges in the area of blasting and blasting processes, such as wall control, quality of fragmentation, explosives consumption and vibration. Remaining financially viable is one of the most significant objectives for mining professionals as they work through the blasting challenges within the mining chain of processes. This objective is such a significant challenge, primarily due to the high consumption of materials and the direct consequences on the downstream processes in the mining work flow, including loading, hauling, crushing, milling and mineral concentration. This paper reviews and discusses a technique to achieve this objective, namely air-decking. The performance in a number of mines around the world is reviewed focusing on the economic contributions of air-deck blasting. Various scenarios are investigated and simulated, covering both conventional and air-deck blasting, using JKSimblast software. The scenarios explore a range of issues and found that optimum results could be achieved with a minimum amount of explosives. The results obtained from the simulations were verified with blasts at Rixs Creek Coal Mine, Australia. Based on the verification results the simulations were then modified to more accurately model the actual conditions and parameters on site and to ensure that the models derived meet the production and control requirements at the mine site. Ultimately, overall analysis and comparisons were applied to the outcomes of the conventional and air-decking blasts revealing a reduction in material consumption of around 25 per cent with consequential savings and up to a 30 per cent reduction in ground vibration.CITATION:Abdalla, M A, Laing, T and Hagan, P, 2012. Coal washery wastes comprise tailings, finer than 0.5 to 0.1 mm depending on the sophistication of the washery, and coarse reject, typically finer than 50 mm. Subaerial disposal of coal tailings slurry at about 30 per cent solids by mass results in the formation of a delta with an average slope of about 1 in 100, representing one extreme. The ravelling of coarse reject on loose-dumping, results in an angle of repose slope with an angle of about 37o (1 in 1.3), representing the other extreme. The pumped co-disposal of coal tailings and coarse reject results in the formation of an upper delta with an average slope of about to one in ten, between the two extremes. The depositional behaviour of these three waste streams is discussed and compared in this paper. The important depositional and material parameters, and a theoretical description of the processes involved, are also presented. Comparisons are made between the depositional behaviour of the various coal washery waste streams, and natural depositional systems, such as rivers, alluvial fans, and scree slopes.
