Os aços inoxidáveis austeníticos apresentam interessante junção de propriedade mecânica com elevada resistência à corrosão. Porém, quando aplicados em temperaturas na faixa de sensitização e submetidos a ambientes agressivos, tornam-se suscetíveis à corrosão intergranular. Para verificação da suscetibilidade desses aços sofrem este fenômeno são realizados ensaios de corrosão. Dentre eles os mais utilizados são os contidos na norma ASTM A262, que possui cinco diferentes procedimentos. Este trabalho consiste na comparação dos procedimentos das Práticas A, C e E, contidos nessa norma, para determinação da tendência à corrosão intergranular do aço AISI 304L. Para isto, amostras do aço foram sensitizadas a 675°C por uma hora e em seguida submetidas aos diferentes ensaios descritos na norma. Após a realização dos três procedimentos, considera-se que a metodologia mais assertiva e confiável seja a Prática E, conhecido como ensaio de Strauss, e que as amostras analisadas não apresentaram corrosão intergranular.

Control of true steel level in the tundish during casting is desired in order to maintain the correct pressure head and thus provide a stable flow to the mold. Also the control of tundish draining prevents slag carryover and can increase yield at each end of cast sequence. At Steel of West Virginia (part of the SDI Group), it was understood that to be able to measure the true steel running level and control the drain level at the end of casting would be a great benefit during production at their three strand billet caster. This paper sets out to show how an evaluation process was started to find the best method to determine steel level in the tundish and to prevent the steel level dropping low enough to allow slag to enter the mold. Also how the decision was taken and a real time molten steel measurement system was installed and by utilizing the resulting data in the process, how slag in the mold was removed as an issue, how lost production was reduced and how consistent steel level has provided constant casting speeds and improved stream integrity, all leading to realized quality improvements. Other areas discussed within the paper will be the training of operational staff, the difficulties to be overcome when first installing new equipment and how these teething problems were cured by close co-operation between the steel plant and the equipment suppliers. In conclusion the paper will discuss the production improvements achieved, production cost savings at the plant and how the generated data was integrated into the plants process control system.

Proporcionar um ambiente aprimorado na sala de controle para uma rápida solução de problemas e conectar subestações de locais hostis e distantes reduzem não apenas tempo de manutenção, mas também aumentam a segurança das equipes. A norma IEC 61850 nos permite entregar uma solução para um sistema mais intuitivo com acesso rápido a informações que melhoram a supervisão da planta na sala de controle.

The hot blast stoves are a regenerative heat exchange system, accounting for 10 to 20% of the total energy requirement in an integrated steel plant, responsible for the supply of about one-third of the blast furnace heat input and responsible for a constant flow of hot air to the blast furnace, according to the required production. Because of their important role in the hot metal production, a stable operation and an appropriate combustion control is necessary. This paper aims to present the results of an investigation and modifications performed as an operating multi-furnace plant, as well as the parameters considered to ensure thermal equilibrium, improving in the stoves heating cycle.

Currently there is a constant and essential concern of preserving nature. Over the years the concern with the environment is increasing, new environmental laws are emerging and being applied more rigorously and consequently emerge economic needs and mineral processing practices and other materials. In this sense briquetting becomes an alternative to fine particles agglomeration by means of pressure and or temperature, with the aid or not of a binder, which allows to get a product not only compressed, which presents shape, size, and adequate mechanical properties. The reduction in volume of the material in some cases (beyond the technological benefits) also allows fine materials can be transported and stored more economically, safely and effectively. The production of coke is greater as the content of better coking coal is, thus he low capacity coking coal is not much used in coke ovens. This research aims to demonstrate that briquetting of mineral coals with low coking coal capacity is possible, additionally allows increased coke production, obtaining then a better yield of coke. Basically they take advantage of low price of no coking coals without changing the quality of the coke produced. Anyway, briquetting became a smart alternative to aggregate values, economy and care for the environment.

At various stages during the hot rolling process, the different rolled products – blooms, billets, bars, respectively sections, but also slabs or plates – need to be cut. While the cross sections of these products are being reduced during each rolling pass, the lengths are being increased accordingly. Thus, it becomes necessary to cut the products to shorter lengths suitable for the next steps of production by state-of-the-art designed dry abrasive cut-off machines.

Universal cardan joints are widely used in drivetrains of rolling mills for steel and aluminum making, as well as for non ferrous alloy industry. Working conditions are extremely tough due to high alternating or pulsating rolling torques in the roughing stands and high torques and speeds in the finishing stands. Overloads and lubrication along with oxide and slag are also critical issues that contribute to create severe working conditions. For a constant and reliable power transmission rolling mills performance and uptime rely on Universal cardan Joints which are the most critical equipment of the drivetrain. Fatigue assessment of the most important components of the Universal cardan Joint is therefore definitely vital for the mill in order to avoid failures and consequently downtimes. Considering the component’s dimensions and weight and in addition the time needed in order to reproduce full scale tests, a new approach to study the Universal cardan joint’s main components fatigue behavior has been investigated. It consists in reproducing the local stress condition of the main joint components on small scale specimens that can be tested by conventional laboratory fatigue machines. The aim of this study is to analyze the most critical stress concentration areas in the universal cardan joints highlighting how a universal cardan joint Wöhler curve can be determined through laboratory tests of small scale specimens.

Foi estudada uma forma de reduzir o custo de produção de aços que atendem a norma NBR 6656 LNE 38 (ou LNE 380) na Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN). Esses materiais são utilizados em peças de conformabilidade crítica principalmente para indústria automotiva. Na CSN, o Forno Panela tradicionalmente faz parte da rota obrigatória de fabricação desses materiais constituindo um “gargalo” de produção. Efetuou-se uma análise da composição química, então empregada para os aços e das propriedades mecânicas resultantes, e então se buscou uma nova composição que atendesse a norma e que permitisse outra rota de produção. Percebeu-se que uma redução no teor de manganês em relação ao normalmente utilizado propiciava uma melhor adequação à norma, além de permitir o uso de uma rota alternativa que maximizava a produção e permitia reduzir custos.

A precise roll stack deformation model of a flat rolling mill is crucial for strip profile assessment as it depends strongly on the roll’s deformation. The need for more and more advanced products with stringent both geometrical and mechanical tolerances (e.g., Advanced High Strength Steels – AHSS), with thinner and harder steel strips, demands more advanced simulation models. The present paper addresses assumptions made in Finite Element Method (FEM)-based roll stack models on some important, yet barely discussed features: What is the impact on precision of the simplifications such as symmetry and anti-symmetry? Should roll neck boundary conditions in bearings be considered as fixed or simply supported? In this paper a hybrid model developed by the authors for a general flat rolling mill is used to assess those questions. This model runs much faster (100x in some cases) than a whole-FEM-modeled 6-high rolling mill with the elastoplastic strip deformation, thanks to its simplifications adopted. This model assumes a steady state rolling condition, and the roll stack is modeled with tridimensional finite elements, and the loads are calculated via a slab method adopting a plane strain state for the strip deformation (especially true for thin strips). An industrial 6-high cold rolling mill is modeled and results on the application of symmetries and different boundary conditions on the roll’s necks are presented. It is concluded that the application of symmetries and anti-symmetries for the 6-high rolling mill is possible for thin strips. And the way the necks are modeled does not impact on the final strip shape, though it influences the magnitude of the roll’s displacement. The coupling of the strip with the work roll applied assuming a symmetry plane of the arc of contact has little influence on the strip shape.

Recently several studies have been developed on the use of microalloyed steels with low Mn content (below 1%) in the controlled rolling of heavy plates for the manufacture of pipes. However, this novel concept of alloy has peculiarities in its thermomechanical processing. Lower Mn contents should lead to the acceleration of NbCN precipitation kinetics during rolling, leading to a reduction in the soluble Nb content in austenite that delays its recrystallization by drag effect. This fact, plus the heavy and fast passes applied under virtually isothermal conditions in a heavy plate rolling mill with high power, increases the risk of partial recrystallization during the finishing stage of the controlled rolling, since strain hardening of austenite becomes significant and the interaction between precipitation and recrystallization is increasingly delayed. The objective of this study was to analyze the evolution of mean flow stress during the finishing stage of controlled rolling in these low Mn, high Nb microalloyed steels, in order to better understand the metallurgical mechanisms acting during this process and identify conditions that allow full compliance with the requirements of this product class.

With the growth of nanoscience and nanotechnology, the synthesis of nanostructured oxides has received a special attention. Metal oxides are widely used in the manufacture of microelectronic circuits, piezoelectric devices, fuel cells, catalysts, filters and bactericides systems. These metal oxides represent a large class of semiconductor materials suitable for photocatalytic processes. In recent years, new materials of this class such as TiO2 and ZnO have been developed due to their photo-catalytic abilities to degrade various environmental pollutants. This work aimed to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of zinc oxide previously synthesized by combustion synthesis in solution using citric acid as fuel and different reasons fuel/oxidant. After synthesis, the powders were subjected to heat treatments at different temperatures and photo-catalysis. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of a solution of methyl orange in a photochemical reactor of UV illumination, after which the transmittance of the samples measured with the assistance of a spectrophotometer. To analyze the results, a commercial zinc oxide was used as standard. The products of combustion synthesis in solution showed that photocatalytic activity varied according to the ratio fuel/oxidant and as a function of heat treatment. The results showed a higher photocatalytic activity for the products obtained with disabilities fuel in the reaction and heat treated.

The increase in industrial demand is responsible for a consequent evolution in the process of injection of aluminum under pressure (Die Casting) to achieve requirements such as; greater geometric complexity of injected parts, larger dimensions, hard-filled cavities, thin walls, and more refined mechanical and aesthetic requirements. Thus, the industries have searched for sensible increases in pressure and injection speed, always combining the best resistance and performance of the wells submitted to the new process conditions. The need for more aggressive applications for the cavities means that there is a constant evolution of the entire production chain in the manufacture of molds, passing through several processes, among them; machining, designs with complex engineering solutions, refining in the process of heat treatments and surface treatments. Allied to these needs, high performance steels manufactured by differentiated processes with high fracture resistance, hot strength and wear must be selected. This work aims to present the main factors considered in the development of high performance molds, the engineering of materials involved, technological trends and technical engineering solutions for the different variables of the die casting process.

O processo de análises físicas e químicas de amostras de minério de ferro [3] é um processo crucial para avaliação do tipo de minério que está sendo extraído, beneficiado e expedido nas operações das mineradoras. Assim, aplicar novos conceitos e equipamentos altamente tecnológicos, que irão garantir resultados cada vez mais precisos e a execução das tarefas de forma cada vez mais segura, é a chave e o desejo das empresas. No laboratório da VALE S/A, em Itabira, foi realizado um estudo de caso de um sistema automatizado de preparação de amostras capaz de realizar as etapas de divisão da amostra abaixo de 1mm, pulverização, confecção de pastilha prensada e fundida, análise de perda por calcinação (PPC), limpeza de utensílios e acessórios e descarte de resíduo de minério de ferro. Nesse estudo é abordado a avaliação dos equipamentos e tecnologias instalados e os desafios tecnológicos e de processos enfrentados durante a implantação desse projeto.

A solução de eletrocentros aplicada a subestações elétricas dentro de uma planta industrial vem se consolidando no processo de mineração no Brasil em virtude de suas diversas vantagens de modularização, montagem e testes em fábrica, acelerando a instalação e energização das subestações em campo aonde os prazos de disponibilidade são sempre curtos para o início da operação da planta. Adicionalmente ao conceito de eletrocentros, a automação de subestações elétricas tem possibilitado através da utilização de redes de comunicação baseadas na norma IEC 61850 uma nova visão de integração dos diversos equipamentos, painéis elétricos e de automação que compõem as subestações dentro de uma plataforma integrada com a automação de processos da planta, disponibilizando um maior número de informações para o correto controle da subestação e gerenciamento de energia, bem como a redução significativa do cabeamento interno de controle e comando entre painéis facilitando ainda mais a modularização dos eletrocentros. Além das vantagens de montagem e comissionamento, o conjunto eletrocentro e sistema integrado de automação possibilita para a operação e a manutenção da planta consideráveis avanços através do gerenciamento remoto e integrado de informações, garantindo uma maior eficiência em seus respectivos processos.

Juntas soldadas por centelhamento (flash butt welding) de trilhos de aço do tipo intermediário foram caracterizadas mecânica e estruturalmente. Além disso, ensaios preliminares de dilatometria foram aplicados ao metal base e correlacionados ao processo de soldagem. Os resultados indicam que o metal base atendeu aos requisitos da Norma AREMA (2013). A microestrutura de toda a região soldada é formada por perlita e os ciclos termomecânicos provocaram significativas alterações no tamanho das colônias perlíticas e na sua morfologia, com destaque às mudanças de espaçamento interlamelar em toda a junta e início de esferoidização na região de transformação parcial. Como consequência das alterações morfológicas da perlita, a microdureza foi significativamente reduzida na região de transformação parcial e refino de grãos. A taxa de resfriamento média após o processo de soldagem foi estimada a partir dos ensaios de dilatometria.

O presente trabalho pretende estudar o comportamento mecânico do cobre eletrolítico C11000 e da liga de cobre cromo C18200. Esses dois materiais são objetos de estudos da equipe técnica que está desenvolvendo a câmara de combustão do motor foguete propelente líquido L75. Atualmente, não há disponível na literatura informações sobre o comportamento mecânico desses materiais em altas temperaturas. A fim de suprir essa necessidade, foram realizados ensaios de tração a quente, no intervalo de temperatura de 27 a 500°C. Adicionalmente, foram realizados ensaios de dureza Vickers e metalografia para avaliar a capacidade do material em resistir mecanicamente em altas temperaturas. Os resultados obtidos demostraram que o cobre eletrolítico sofre amolecimento a partir de 400ºC e que o cobre cromo, apesar de apresentar elevada resistência mecânica quando comparado com o cobre eletrolítico C11000, é um material frágil.

O modelo utilizado como base para elaboração deste trabalho, foi desenvolvido com os dados coletados no start up da planta de desfosforação de gusa líquido, fornecida pela TECNOSULFUR S/A, localizada em Sete Lagoas - MG a Siderúrgica CISAM, localizada em Pará de Minas – MG. Esse modelo prevê de forma precisa a quantidade de agente desfosforante necessário para o tratamento de desfosforação de ferro gusa, considerando o teor de fósforo final objetivado e levando em consideração o fósforo, silício e temperatura iniciais. O objetivo deste trabalho é testar esse modelo em outros reatores que possuem processos de desfosforação, tais como: desfosforação de aço em convertedores e fornos elétricos. Inicialmente foram coletados dados de desfosforação de algumas publicações para verificação de viabilidade desse trabalho e como o modelo se mostrou eficiente, futuramente ele será testado em algumas empresas e se necessário será ajustado.

Em uma usina de processamento mineral podem existir dezenas de controladores que alteram automaticamente variáveis como taxa de minério, vazão de polpa, nível de caixa, quantidade de insumos, etc. Esses controladores existem para manter o processo em seu estado mais produtivo com o mínimo de ação humana. Para que este sistema de controladores funcione adequadamente, é preciso que estes sejam avaliados e sintonizados periodicamente. Devido à grande quantidade de controladores, diversos métodos de avaliação e inúmeras técnicas de sintonia, a tarefa pode se tornar extremamente complexa, confusa e longa. Por esta razão, nesse trabalho é proposta a aplicação da abordagem Seis Sigma DMAIC para gerenciar de forma eficiente e concisa as atividades de avaliação e sintonia de controladores industriais. A aplicação foi realizada na SAMARCO Mineração S.A. em Mariana/MG e os resultados comprovam a importância da abordagem proposta.

Os aços ferramenta para trabalho a frio são utilizados em diversas aplicações em decorrência de propriedades como elevada estabilidade dimensional, alta resistência ao desgaste e elevada temperabilidade. Tais características estão diretamente associadas à microestrutura do material, isto é, à quantidade, à distribuição, ao tipo e à morfologia dos carbonetos presentes e à quantidade de martensita revenida e austenita retida. Neste contexto, no presente trabalho foram caracterizados mecanicamente e microestruturalmente quatro aços ferramenta para trabalho a frio empregados na fabricação de cilindros de laminação a frio. Para isso, amostras foram retiradas dos próprios cilindros e foram realizadas análises de dureza, microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura, espectroscopia por energia dispersiva e espectroscopia de emissão atômica por plasma. De acordo com resultados, uma comparação entre as propriedades dos aços foi conduzida visando concluir qual deles é o mais adequado para a referida aplicação.

The deployment of autonomous haulage system causes several impacts in mining production chain, being necessary an appropriate change management policy, crucial to observe and gather all the benefits brought by the technology. The change management is also necessary to guarantee the adaptability of the organization in the long term. This paper briefly presents the technology deployed in the autonomous trucks at Vale's iron ore Brucutu mine, the changes that the operation team faces in the adoption of autonomous technology and the required training path to develop new procedures to deal with the sensitivity of the autonomous haulage system, besides the new operational dynamics from a process point of view, with safer, more consistent and more productive operations.
