The following paper presents the results of geostatistical studies of the selected hard-coal deposits in Poland. Geostatistical methods were applied mainly to the characterization of variability structure of the coal seams thicknesses as well as sulphur and ash contents in the coals. Results imply that the accuracy of coal reserves estimations can be improved if kriging method is applied. Kriging allows predicting more precisely the values of such parameters as thickness and sulphuring content.

Operation of a pilot-scale Floatex density separator was studied using a pyrite concentrate slurry feed. Experimental measurements were further utilized in parameterization of a hindered settling simulation model. The model incorporates particle slip velocity calculation and also a separation efficiency function, adjusted to describe the feed material characteristics. The model was used to compute the overflow and underflow compositions when both fluidization bed pressure and teeter water flow rates were varied. In addition, prediction accuracy and the model validity were evaluated. The simulations gave good results when the teeter interstitial velocities were moderate enough to avoid excessive turbulence in the fluidization. Prediction of the cumulative overflow and underflow size distributions in most experiments yielded essentially less than 10% relative error between the sample data and the estimated value of the 50% passing sizes.

This paper will describe the copper concentrate slurry pipeline and pumping system between the concentrator and the port at Bougainville Copper Ltd. The operations of Bougainville Copper Ltd. are located on the island of Bougainville in the South Pacific. Geographically, it is the northernmost island of the Solomon Group but, politically, it is part of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a United Nations Trust territory administered by Australia, having recently been given self-government, with independence scheduled for December 1974. (Fig. 1). The island is approximately 130 miles long by 30 miles wide, with the Crown Prince mountain range forming a spine along its length. The mountains in place are over 8,000 feet high with the mine located on the western flank at an elevation of 2,200 feet. Exploration on Bougainville for copper by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia (CRA) began in 1963 and by 1968, through geophysical, geochemical and diamond drilling methods, an orebody containing nearly one billion tons of ore grading approximately 0.48% Cu. and sane gold had been outlined. Bougainville Copper Ltd., the company operating the mine, is 53.6% wined by CRA, 20% mined by the government of Papua New Guinea with the public Folding the remainder of the shares. Through the USGS's National Coal Availability program, coal resource appraisals have been completed for three 7.5-minute quadrangles (Willow Crossing, Colstrip East, Colstrip SW) in the Powder River Basin area of southeastern Montana. Available coal reserves (original reserves minus tonnages affected by current restrictions) vary from 44 to 70 percent of the original reserves. Major restrictions impacting each area also vary. In each area, one or two beds contain most of the reserves, but up to eleven beds contain available coal. The main beds in completed studies are the Knobloch, Rosebud, Sawyer and Flowers-Goodale. Three additional areas (six 7.5-minute quadrangles) are in preparation.

This research work discusses the development of a two-dimensional model that represents the flow that occurs in the inlet section of hydrocyclones. The governing equations are the two-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in cylindrical polar coordinates with primitive variable formulations. In this approach, no assumptions have been made other than independence in the axial direction. The full two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation in the r-a plane is used. The commonly used simplifying assumption of axisymmetry is not used. A numerical technique based on a newly developed spectral-difference method is used to solve the equations. The spectral-difference method is a multi-domain, and multi-dimensional extension of the Jacobi polynomial collocation technique. The computational grid for the inlet section is composed of 25 sub-domains which result from five partitions in the angular direction and five partitions in the radial direction. Several test cases are used to validate the appropriateness of the numerical model.

Compagnie Minière Espérance mines a primary gold orebody in an openpit. The ore is processed through crushing, primary gravity concentration, grinding and secondary gravity separation, generating tailings with remaining fine gold. Analysis of the material in the pond has indicated a residual gold grade sufficient to justify a chemical treatment process to recover the gold. However, direct cyanidation would require a prohibitively large installation for the site, which is located in a remote rainforest environment. It was decided to test the feasibility of preconcentration using flotation. As lab tests proved up the technical feasibility of the flotation process, an on-site pilot operation was carried out to assess the continuous circuit performances, define the best configuration and obtain enough data for industrial circuit sizing. Data collected during the pilot campaign was used for calibrating a process simulator built with the USIM? PAC software. The simulator validated the feasibility of upgrading the existing plant, including the reprocessing of tailings to obtain an acceptable fine gold recovery from a small amount of concentrate.

The 71st Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Section of SME and the 59th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held jointly April 14-16, 1998, in Duluth, MN. Registration was estimated at 450 people, about the same as last year's attendance. A short course on mine productivity and a trade show that included about 75 exhibitors were also held in conjunction with the SME meeting. This year's theme was "Iron ore and integrated steel - where are we going?" Although generally optimistic in the near term, the general feeling among the attendees is that the industry faces serious competitive challenges. The iron mining industry in Minnesota experienced a tremendous rebound from the devastating downturn of the 1980s. Today, however, all seven of Minnesota's taconite plants are operating at full capacity. And these high production levels are expected to continue during the next several years. Longer-term, however, Minnesota's producers face an increasingly competitive worldwide market, including stiff competition from Canadian operations. Because of the increasing competition, industry representatives in Minnesota believe that it is critical to strengthen their operations. To accomplish this, companies are looking to: ? Further reduce production costs. ? Bring new technologies into their operations. ? Develop value-added facilities such as direct-reduced iron. ? Expand their markets. The industry is also seeking more collaboration between industry and government. The National Steel Pellet Co. and Minntac are looking at using ported kilns, which would reduce energy consumption significantly. Cleveland Cliffs, EVTAC, Northshore Mining and Minnesota Iron and Steel are all looking at building value-added plants. One such project that received attention among the attendees was Minnesota Iron and Steel's proposed $1.2 billion combined mine, taconite plant, direct reduced iron facility and steel production facility. If the operation is built, it would produce about 3.4 Mt/a (3.39 million ltpy) of direct-reduced iron pellets. Financing is pending. An announcement is expected in the fall of 1998. The pellets, containing 70% iron, would be processed into steel in electric arc furnaces. The steel produced would then be processed into hot-rolled coil, which is used by the appliance and automobile industries. The keynote addresses and technical sessions focused on these issues as well as on environmental issues.

This research aims to test the hypothesis that the low retention rate of women in the mining industry is caused by workplace culture and policies established due to gender segregation. A quasi-experiment is developed to determine the cause-and-effect relationship between gender segregation-inspired culture and the retention of women. The experiment considers the impact of the job type and the operational environment. The analysis provides information on factors that cause low retention of women in the industry, the extent to which gender segregation plays a role, and insights that allow actionable and measurable changes in the industry.

The Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit is located in the Bayhorse mining district about 20 air miles southwest from Challis, Idaho. Cyprus Mines Corporation began exploration on the property in 1968, and at present is in the pre-production stripping phase. Molybdenum mineralization is contained in a late Cretaceous (88 m.y.), composite, biotite granodiorite-quartz monzonite intrusive complex. The complex intruded carbonaceous argillites, causing local silicification and hornfelsing of the sedimentary rocks. The main portion of the orebody is unconformably overlain by up to 1000 ft of Challis volcanic rocks (49 m.y.). Surface mineralization and related rock alteration can be recognized over a 2500- x 8000-ft area extending northwesterly from the discovery outcrop. Molybdenite occurs in a network of subparallel quartz-biotite-muscovite-orthoclase veins and veinlets within the intrusive rocks. The zone of +0.020/0 Mo mineralization outlines a steeply dipping tabular configuration in the main orebody and gradually changes into a hood-shaped configuration along strike to the northwest. The overall grade [ ] of the deposit is controlled by the abundance of the quartz- molybdenite veins and veinlets in the intrusive rock. Very little disseminated mineralization is present, and no economic mineralization occurs in the argillaceous sedimentary rocks. Muscovite, biotite, and orthoclase/microcline define three alteration zones that conform with the overall zone of mineralization. The upper alteration zone contains dominantly muscovite and sericite associated with quartz veins. The central zone contains coarse biotite and locally orthoclase and microcline. Molybdenite is most abundant within this zone. The lower zone contains thin envelopes of orthoclase/microcline around quartz veins. Based on about 313,000 ft of drilling and 8592 ft of underground development work, computer-derived ore reserve calculations indicate 200 million tons averaging 0.1 1% Mo at a 0.050/0 Mo cutoff grade with a waste to ore stripping ratio of about 3:l.

Today the longwall is getting increasing attention in the United States as an excellent way to mine coal. This is not to say it is the best way in every mine because conditions, capital costs, and markets may well dictate another method. However, operators with working longwalls are often showing preference by phasing out room-and-pillar sections and replacing them with longwall. In the United States there are about 90 longwalls in operating coal mines and the number is increasing. In Europe, 95% of underground coal mining is by longwall compared with only 5% in the United States. In the Western States about 25% of the underground coal mines use longwall mining. There is logic behind the increase in longwalling. Compared to room-and-pillar mining, straight single-pass longwall has important advantages that show up in underground coal mining in any part of the country.

"Frac sand is industrial silica sand much like glass, foundry, filtration and blast sand. The sand must meet certain specifications set forth by the industry that consumes the product. The production and consumption of frac sand has experienced record growth in the last 10 years because of new oil and gas drilling, new horizontal well drilling, multi-stage fracturing and the stimulation of older wells that have little or no production. Frac sand is needed to “prop open” the fractures in the rock reservoirs to allow oil and gas to flow out more freely.According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the estimated production of frac sand in 2015 was 71 percent of the total production of industrial silica sand or 67.4 Mt (74.3 million st). This is a decrease of about 12 percent from 2014. However, the silica sand industry and other industry sources estimate only 50 Mt (55 million st) of frac sand were produced in 2015. In recent years both the USGS and industry studies have been very close in estimating the production of frac sand but with the recent downturn in frac sand production, perhaps, reporting to the USGS was not as accurate. These discrepancies may be that the USGS statistics are based on voluntary reporting by the industry and some companies report their approximate production, others may not. It is always difficult to obtain accurate production figures of any industrial mineral or construction aggregate operation as most companies tend to keep those figures somewhat confidential. It is certainly accurate to report that the production of frac sand had decreased since the last quarter of 2014 and through 2015. The oversupply of oil and natural gas has led to this decline in frac sand usage. Oversupply has idled drilling rigs and well completion activities. World Oil Magazine reports that 2015 was the worst year for rigs in a quarter century. The only wells being completed are those that have contract agreements to do so, others have been capped. Very few new wells are being drilled. Since about 98 percent of well completion is sand and water, the sand supply has caught up with the demand. There are some bright spots in the “oil patch” as the Permian Basin in Texas and the Woodford Shale in Oklahoma have kept pace somewhat with drilling and completion. It has been reported that the frac sand producers in the Brady-Voca, TX area are producing to nearly capacity. The northern frac sand producers like those in Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota are feeling the downturn because of the cost of shipping sand to these moderately active basins and plays. The “rule of thumb” is that freight is 2/3 and sand is 1/3 the cost."

In the estimation of recoverable resources, geostatistical techniques such as Multiple Indicator Kriging require a change of support correction to derive theoretical recoveries based on an assumed level of mining selectivity. The change of support models most widely used in practice entail model based generalized corrections either on a global or local basis. Examples include the affine and indirect lognormal methods. Change of support corrections derived empirically through short-scale conditional simulation realizations often show notable differences compared with theoretical corrections determined using model variogram parameters. The existing changes of support models are reviewed and an alternative method is proposed.

TRANSPORTATION TUNNELING The use of tunnels for transportation, namely rapid rail transit systems and highways is on the increase. How much that increase might be through the 1980's is the question that is discussed in this paper. In 1975, there were 218 route miles of subway tunnels for rapid rail transit and 154 lane-miles of highway tunnel. From the viewpoint of many transportation planners and designers, the tunnel is one of the tools which may be used to by-pass many types of obstacles: a mountain, a body of water, or a Central Business District (CBD). Therefore, the transportation tunnel is a rural as well as an urban solution with major emphasis on the latter because of the current transportation needs of our cities. In the case of rural locations, tunnels are usually constructed through mountains in order to eliminate miles of steep grades and dangerous curves, such as the Eisenhower Tunnel which cuts through the Continental Divide in Colorado along 1-70 and saves 10 miles and 40 minutes of driving time. Tunnels also provide an excellent transportation link across bodies of water in order not to interfere with shipping lanes. The Chesapeake Bay Tunnel and Bay Tubes of the BART system are excellent examples of this type of tunnel.

The value addition potential of ilmenite was examined using several characterization techniques. Raw ilmenite is composed of 93.65 wt.% of FeOTiO2, 3.55 wt.% of SiO2, 1.22 wt.% of Al2O3, and the remainder being other minor oxides. Ilmenite and powdered carbonized coconut shells were mixed in the weight ratio of 4:1. A separate fraction of the same mixture was added with powdered seashells in the weight ratio of 4:1:0.5. Six fractions of each mixture were distinctly milled from 1 to 6 h in a planetary ball mill. XRD spectra (broadened and diminished reflections of ilmenite) and FTIR observations (Ti―O―Cbonding) of milled samples indicate the possible incorporation of carbon into the ilmenite structure. Any clues of an occurrence of new rutile peaks were not observed in XRD spectra of milled samples. Consequently, the carbothermic reduction has not been initiated during mechanical activation. In this case, samples powdered for 6 h in a mill were isothermally annealed for 2 h under normal airflow at temperatures of 800 °C, 1000 °C, and 1200 °C, respectively. According to the X-ray diffractograms, the annealing temperatures of 1000 °C and 1200 °C exhibited almost similar trends with rutile (R), pseudobrookite (PB) and elemental iron (F), and a very few ilmenite (I) peaks. Consequently, 6 h of milling and 1000 °C annealing were concluded as the optimum conditions for the carbothermic reduction. Moreover, this study indicated seashells as a potential rate raiser for the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite at 800 °C. Therefore, this process is applicable to upgrade ilmenite into a mixture of synthetic rutile and elemental iron.

Fault-slip bursts induced by mining activities can result in severe damage to nearby mine development. In general, engineers designing rock support in burst-prone mines not only need to consider stress redistribution resulting from excavation, but also dynamic loading that results from seismic waves generated by large mininginduced fault-slip events. In this study, we simulated dynamic waves in sedimentary rock from a blasting source and from a mining-induced-seismicity source using a Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) model with discrete fracture networks (DFNs). Our purpose was to investigate the stability of openings and the adequacy of existing support systems at an underground limestone mine in South Korea. A baseline model with only static loading was also simulated, which verified observed stability under such conditions. The results indicate that the current support system of shotcrete lining is likely to work well under dynamic loading caused by blasting. However, when the dynamic source was a far-field fault-slip event, the dynamic loading exceeded the support capacity of the shotcrete lining. Thus, if a mine is operating in ground with an elevated risk of mininginduced fault slip, mine engineers should consider seismic wave propagation and ground motion distribution from a remote, mining-induced fault-slip event to determine a suitable support design.

Whether accessing sophisticated ERP or maintenance management systems, engaging in fleet management, video surveillance, or access control, or protecting miners with wireless locator systems, these networks serve as a literal lifeline between workers deep within mines and surface operations. For this, mining networks require more than permanently installed network cabling, it also requires unique deployable systems designed for quick installation, extension and even relocation as the active mine site area moves, or equipment is moved in and out.

In recent years, economies of scale have continued to drive copper projects to larger throughputs to offset depleting lower grade resources. A decade ago, there were only a small number of projects that stretched beyond 100 kt/d (110,000 stpd) throughput rates. Today, and moving forward, virtually all the major copper projects are sized beyond this, with throughput rates up to 250 kt/d (275,000 stpd) now under evaluation for a number of key projects in Chile and Peru. This paper explores the development from the 160 m3 (5,650 cu ft) flotation cells, through to the 257 m3 (9,076 cu ft) cells and to the current 660 m3 (23,380 cu ft) machines. The contributions of specific copper concentrators to this growth phase are reviewed in this article. The historical basis of flotation machine scale-up is also briefly discussed. Metallurgical results as well as layout, maintenance and operational aspects are highlighted.

The title of this session is "Wall Street Looks at the Mining Industry," and I am going to attempt to answer the question: Shouldn't Mining Stocks Sell at Higher Price Levels? Or, What Does Wall Street See When Looking at the Mining Industry? Well, it sees a capital intensive business, a technical industry, and a growing industry becoming more vertically integrated. But, at the same time, Wall Street sees a cyclical industry, a fragmented industry of erratic earnings, spotty public relations, a feast-or-famine business where the public usually does not differentiate between coal mining or metal mining, and does not appreciate either the risks or the rewards. As a result, mining stocks generally sell at relatively low price learnings ratios in comparison to other industrial groups. This PIE ratio, the current market price of the capital stock divided by annual earnings per share, is probably the most popular index of a stock's value. The average of the price/ earnings ratios of the 30 stocks comprising the Dow Jones Industrial Average is over 14. This diverse group of stocks is widely regarded as being a cross-section and representative of the industrial companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange. However, in comparison to 14, Asarco and Kennecott shares are currently available for about 8 times annual earnings. Even discounting earnings from South America, the stock of these two companies sells at only 10 times earnings. Of course, Peruvian politics is currently preventing Cerro shares from selling above 6 times earnings, and Chilean politics keeps Anaconda shares at a PIE multiple of 7. However, even in better times, these companies rarely sell above 10 times earnings. American Metal Climax and Newmont sell at only 11 times earnings as does Phelps Dodge and St. Joseph Lead. What is the preferred electrolytic cell design and why? Hall: Considerable research remains to be done on electrolytic cell design. Studies are presently being conducted to determine optimum voltage and amperage. Zadra cells, which were used in some of the first carbon plants, are efficient when properly installed. Gold and silver are deposited on large-capacity, cylindrical steel wool cathodes. At times high value sludge falls from the cathode to the bottom of the cell. Rectangular cells, which were developed at some smaller operations in Nevada, require less floor space and have some desirable features in that cathodes can be moved and sludge can be removed from cell bottoms without actually shutting down the circuit. In South Africa two types of cells using graphite and diaphragm configurations are being tested. Duncan: The rectangular cell has one problem it's easy for shortcircuiting to occur. If you don't have a good seal on the side of the tank and on the bottom, the solution is going to want to flow around the bottom and sides of the cathodes and you're going to get poor performance in the cell. That is the advantage the Zadra cell has over the rectangular cell. With good sealing, which is a must, you should be able to get a ratio of the value of the solution going in to the value of the solution coming out of 10 to 1. Ken, can you tell me what you're attaining on the Zadra? Hall: At the Homestake gold operation in Lead, the cathode in the No. 1 electrowinning cell is loaded to about 600 ounces when it is moved to the refinery. At this time the No. 2 cathode is moved to the No. 1 cell. The No. 3 cathode is moved to the No. 2 cell and a cathode with new steel wool is placed in the No. 3 cell. In rectangular cells this sometimes is not possible because the loading on the cathode in the last cell may be as high as that in the No. 1 cell. As Don has pointed out this can probably be prevented by good seal design between cathodes. Potter: At the risk of sounding as though I'm straddling the fence, I really believe that either the round cell, as developed by Jack Zadra, or the rectangular cell will do an acceptable job. The Zadra is a fine unit. Leaks are not unknown but there are not very many. However, the rectangular cell is very saving of floor space. Plastics have been greatly improved during the past year or two and there is a very efficient design for the rectangular cell. It would have six cathodes in it and contain about 25 ft of steel wool. The body of this rectangular cell would be reinforced fiberglass plastic but with an integral lining of a high temperature plastic. I think either cell is so efficient and reliable that I would almost be tempted to flip a coin depending on floor space requirements. Either cell can be used to pull a loaded cathode and to advance the lesser loaded cathodes. Don, what is the configuration of your cell? Duncan: The Pinson rectangular cell has dimensions 2 ft wide, 30 in deep, and 10 ft long-long enough to take a dozen cathodes and anodes. We are currently using six of each but are not up to full capacity as yet. It's a steel tank coated with rubber. We have copper bus bars, which brings to mind that the last cathode in the tank, in one instance, was loaded heavier than the first one. That was probably a function of poor contact between cathodes and the bus bar. You can have erosion of the bus bar and if you don't get current flowing into the anode and out of the cathode, the cells will not function properly. Kappes: Just a few comments on cell design. In an alcohol stripping circuit we are running in Beatty„ NV, we are using PVC pipes for all circuitry piping and a commercial polypropylene electrolytic cell. They seem to be working quite nicely. The cell itself has eight cathodes measuring 18 in2. At six gallons per minute flow into the cell, at an average gold content of about 500 ppm, we seem to get good loading on the first three to four cathodes and not much on the end cathodes. At 12 gallons a minute flow we seem to be seeing gold uniformly along all eight cathodes. We are running at quite a high amperage level, about 400 amps into that cell. Gene McClelland, US Bureau of Mines, Reno Research Center (from the floor): I was associated with a company where the packing density of their steel wool cathodes was much too high and created some short-circuiting problems in their electrowinning circuit. I would like to ask the panel if they can recommend a packing density for cathodes in pounds of steel wool per cubic foot. Hall: The weight of steel wool put on one of our cathodes is 10 lb and the dimensions of the cathode are such that density would be about 0.75 lb/ft3. Duncan: I made a rough calculation and I'm estimating about 2 lb/ft3. Potter: In checking over a number of electrowinning operations, I found apparently very satisfactory operation within the limits that have been mentioned. I have come to a figure of about 0.5-1.0 lb of medium grade steel wool per cubic foot packed as uniformly as possible, of course. One consideration in packing is the fact that there should be good contact between the steel wool and the conductor. Operators tend to compact the steel wool more than would be desirable just to try to maintain good contact.
