"INTRODUCTION Conventional steel bar reinforcement is used in many tunnel linings to provide high flexural and tensile load resistance. These Reinforced Concrete (RC) tunnel linings may suffer flexural cracking during service or, in the case of precast concrete segments, during production, handling, or installation. Cracks can lead to corrosion of steel reinforcement, so limits are placed on maximum acceptable crack widths to reduce the likelihood of corrosion during the intended design life (AFTES, 2013; MC2010, 2012). However, the relatively light level of reinforcement used in many applications can result in quite wide in-service crack widths, so either additional steel bar reinforcement is required to limit maximum crack widths, or fibers can be included to control crack widths. Numerous investigations have been undertaken into the efficacy of including steel fibers to reduce crack widths in conventionally reinforced members (Stang and Aarre, 1992; Abrishami and Mitchell, 1997; Bischoff, 2003; Dupont and Vandevalle, 2003; and Jansson et al, 2010), but steel fibers suffer the problem that they are at least as sensitive to corrosion at cracks as steel bars and therefore have similarly tight limits placed on acceptable crack widths (AFTES, 2013). An alternative means of maintaining narrow crack limits in RC members has therefore been sought. The current investigation was instigated following an observation that theories promoted as an explanation for the ability of steel fibers to reduce crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members (Deluce et al, 2014) do not depend on the material composition of the fibers used but instead depend primarily on the tensile stress generated by the fibers across cracks. Since it is known that macro-synthetic fibers are capable of equaling the post-crack tensile capacity of steel fibers, it has been hypothesized that macro-synthetic fibers are also capable of reducing crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members but with the added advantage that macro-synthetic fibers are completely immune to the effects of corrosion. Use of macro-synthetic fibers to reduce maximum crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members subject to aggressive environmental exposure is more rational than use of steel fibers because steel fibers are very sensitive to the corrosive effects of environmental exposure at cracks. The current investigation was therefore undertaken to explore the potential use of macro-synthetic fibers to reduce maximum crack widths in reinforced concrete members subject to flexure. Barchip BC54 fibers were selected as they are one of the most widely used and competitive high performance macro-synthetic fibers currently available."

"A longwall gob is mainly filled with broken rocks from the collapsed roof and becomes a porous medium where explosive methane-air mixtures can accumulate. In bleeder ventilation systems, this mixture can migrate out of the gob into the longwall face and other active areas in the mine during barometric or ventilation-induced pressure changes. When external pressures change, the gob does not perceive this disturbance instantly but with a delay due to air flow resistance in the porous gob material. The delay of gob response to outside pressure changes increases the pressure differential across the gob and may cause an outflow of explosive air mixtures from the gob into the adjacent bleeder entries. With computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling, researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have evaluated the impact of gob pressure fluctuations on the outgassing of the explosive gas zones (EGZs), the magnitudes and rates of pressure changes, the volumes as well as the potentials location of outgassing if it occurs. INTRODUCTION The air pressure field in underground mines is controlled by many factors such as operating fan settings, ventilation controls, surface atmospheric conditions, and other local events that can intermittently disturb mine pressure, including blasting, roof falls, or inundations. Mine fan settings are rarely changed. Mine atmospheric pressure fluctuations due to adjustments in ventilation controls occur more often during the mining process. Atmospheric conditions and barometric pressures can generate fluctuations in mine pressure on a large scale. Atmospheric pressures change regularly every day but can fluctuate abruptly and become increasingly hazardous in adverse weather conditions. Investigations conducted in coal mines in the United States, Australia, Poland, and South Africa observed higher methane emissions from the gob during periods of falling atmospheric pressures, which led to mine explosions (McIntosh, 1957; Boyer, 1964; Kissell et al., 1973; Fauconnier, 1992; Belle, 2014; Wasilewski, 2014; Lolon et al., 2015). Falling external pressures are understood to cause potential outflow of explosive mixtures from the gob, while rising pressures may push fresh air into the gob. This phenomenon is widely known as gob breathing. The actual processes that trigger gob breathing are not fully understood, nor are the parameters that contribute to the process. Other major events such as roof falls or fan failures can also change the pressure conditions in the mine. In contrast to atmospheric pressure changes, these events can change mine pressures much more rapidly or immediately. TIME LAG AND GOB BREATHING CONCEPT In a bleeder ventilation system, the pressure in the gob is designed to be lower than that of the headgate entries and the longwall face. Air from the gob and gate entries flows towards the tailgate-bleeder returns. When the external pressures are disturbed, this designed pressure arrangement may change, potentially resulting in increased outflow from or inflow into the gob."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Not only is 1971 the Centennial Year of the AIME, but it also marks the One Hundredth Anniversary of the United States Portland Cement Industry. On September 26th in 1871 David O. Saylor of Allentown, Pennsylvania, received his patent Numbered 119,413 for the manufacture of portland cement. "Cement" had been used in the United States before that. This was, however, natural cement - a direct product of rocks as found in nature, usually burned at low temperatures in open kilns. During the early 1800s this natural cement played an important role in such projects as the building of the Erie Canal. It was only after the Civil War that small amounts of high priced portland cement was imported from Europe. The successful use of this material in construction led to Saylor's experiments and subsequent patent for the manufacture of a scientifically controlled product in this country. These one hundred years have witnessed four major "ages" of cement . . . three of them occurring in the last quarter century since World War Two. The first age was the "Age of Development", a seventy-year period which saw the growth of cement and its concrete end uses as major construction materials. Next followed a period called the "Age of Demand" when, after the war, cement became in short supply relative to large building requirements. In effect a cement shortage existed. The decade of the Sixties proved to be the "Age of Reaction", with its courses of action coming in response to the problems that arose when the industry's expansion programs provided too much capacity. Today cement, and the concrete industries, find themselves entering the "Age of Reason". The increase in depth of mines due to the depletion of surface deposits leads to unsafe tunnel construction and overall ore extraction. This is due to tunnel instability associated with the surrounding rock mass’s ability to exhibit creep that occurs over time. However, the explicit description of this mechanism using conventional constitutive models has proven to be difficult and inadequate. Hence, this paper presents an integrated viscoelastic viscoplastic visco-damage model with the Duvaut-Lions function. The presented model is calibrated by experimental data to determine the viscoelastic viscoplastic and visco-damage parameters. It is further implemented in a finite volume numerical code and verified on an experimental scale by numerical modeling of a cylindrical specimen. It describes the 3-phase creep mechanism perfectly as compared to the inbuilt conventional integer-order derivative model. Results from the conducted verification show that it can successfully be employed to describe the long-term behavior associated with the creep mechanism.

The aggregates industry is the largest minerals industry in the United States producing over 2.6 billion metric tons of crushed stone, sand and gravel annually. Approximately 5% of that production is fine material, passing a 75-micron mesh sieve. Of that amount, about 77% is not sold and represents one of the major industry issues. The material accumulates in stockpiles and settling ponds having an operational and economic impact on the site’s bottom line. Many factors cause this material to be produced: from blasting and processing techniques all the way to end use specifications.

Mining represents the first industry in the United States to have federally mandated training for its workers. Although the topics to be covered are specified in 30 CFR 48, course content is left to the discretion of the individual mine operators. Unfortunately, certain topics to be covered, such as prevention of accidents, are usually mine specific, making it very difficult to use the same course content in every mine. Further, training requirements may change from one mine to another, due to changes in the demographic characteristics of the workers, or changes in job and organizational characteristics. Therefore, if the intention of safety training is to modify the behavior of workers, it is expected that there should be some changes in the content of safety training programs in order to address the specific requirements of individual mines, or at least mines of similar worker and job characteristics. This study has been directed towards the development of a systems-based procedure for conducting a needs analysis. A special effort was made to understand the psychology of worker behavior by analyzing worker reactions to various organizational and job characteristics.

"In his 1989 book, The New Realities, Peter F. Drucker, Clark Professor of Social Science at Claremont Graduate School, Claremont, CA, stated: “Information is data endowed with relevance and purpose. Converting data into information thus requires knowledge. And knowledge, by definition, is specialized” (p. 209).The discipline of mineral valuation is knowledge-based and requires a mineral valuer to collect, analyze and interpret data that are material to a mineral-valuation assignment. In so doing, the valuer turns the data into information (data come first, followed by information as determined by the mineral valuer) for use by the client (from whom the valuer obtained the mineral-valuation assignment) and other intended users. The valuer uses his or her experience and education (each valuer’s knowledge base) supported by a foundation built upon competency, materiality and transparency, the three pillars of mineral valuation (minerals valuation, mineral-property valuation).The International Mineral Valuation Standards Template (IMVAL Template), third edition dated May 2018, defines mineral valuation as: “The estimation of the value of a mineral property in money or monetary equivalent. The word ‘valuation’ can be used to refer to the estimated value (the valuation conclusion) or to refer to the preparation of the estimated value (the act of valuing)” (p. 14).Furthermore, the IMVAL Template clearly separates valuation from evaluation: “The template deals with valuation, which is distinct from evaluation. The distinction inherent in these defined terms is that valuation addresses the estimation of value of a mineral property, whereas evaluation addresses the broader assessment of a mineral property for an investment decision (p. 2).”This is an important difference because the minerals industry commonly makes investment decisions using feasibility studies to evaluate a proposed mineral development and production project. The purpose of such investment-decision analysis is distinctly different from valuation of a mineral property, no matter where that property lies upon the mineral explorationdevelopment- production-reclamation timeline (Fig. 1). Valuation involves terms such as market value, just compensation, fair value, etc., whereas investment-decision analysis is concerned with the economic viability of a given proposed project. Although feasibility analysis and market valuation can both use discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis as a tool, the formulation of the DCFs and their interpretation are different."

Saudi Arabia’s mineral potential offers development target that compliment the national effort to diversify the income of this oil and gas economic based nation. Ma’aden, a joint stock company with paid-up capital of US$1 billion, has from its inception in 1997, actively developed in-house engineering and management skills to transform the Arabian shield’s mineral potential into such real projects. Gold mine operating facilities of 100,000 oz/yr underground and 50,000 oz/yr open pit are de-scribed, as well as 3 targets, two of which are underdevelopment; Al Hajar (3,000 tpd at 2.5 gpt Au)and Al Amar (5,000 tpd at 20 gpt Au). Emphasis is also on exploitation of phosphate rock and down-stream fertilizer products, based on the Kingdom’s107,000 sq. km. northern basin geological reserve. Al Jalamid, the prime target, represents 216 million tonnes of these P2O5 reserves. Saudis and expatriates, together, lead international engineering companies and contractors operating and developing these facilities.

Wet autogenous grinding is utilized in three iron ore concentrating plants operated by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company (CCI). This paper will trace some of the development in converting from the use of metal grinding mill liners to the use of rubber and will update the current performance of rubber liners in these applications. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company is a natural resources firm with major interests in iron ore mining and processing and oil and gas contract drilling. The company also has interests in oil shale, uranium, forest products, and Great Lakes shipping.

Trees are an essential ingredient of sound reclamation in nearly all surface mining regions. There are, however, possible problems in current reclamation regulations and practices which need to be evaluated and remedied. Recognition and accomodation of growth requirements for trees and other plants will greatly increase reclamation success. Surface mining encompasses a series of processes from a pre-mining baseline study to bond release following revegetation. Land owners, and society, have a great interest in subsequent plant growth on reclaimed areas and in future land values.

Exploration for ore deposits in southeastern Missouri in the 1950's resulted in the important discovery of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955. Further discoveries in the area led to the naming of the Viburnum trend. It has sometimes been referred to as the "New Lead belt" to distinguish it from older lead-producing areas to the east. As presently developed, the "trend" is 35 miles long, running north and south about 50 miles west of the Lead belt. Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined, with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chalcopyrite (copper) and silver recovered as economic by-products. The ore body is as much as 140 feet thick and 1,200 feet wide, and is found in the Bonneterre Dolomite (Upper Cambrian) at depths ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet. Since its discovery many companies have engaged in exploration and several major companies have developed new mines and constructed mills and a smelter in the area. The first mine in the Viburnum trend came on stream in 1960, but as more mines came on stream and others reached capacity, lead production increased to the point that the Southeast Missouri Lead district produced 432,576 tons of lead in 1970 to become the world's largest lead-producing region (Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources, 1971). The Viburnum trend area with its rolling, heavily forested hills and numerous clear running streams is in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. Until the recent development of its mineral resources, the area was sparsely populated and nearly unmarked by the activities of man. Operators of mining vehicles are exposed to high levels of whole-body vibration (WBV) and are therefore at risk of developing vibration-related health disorders. For implementing an effective control strategy, it is imperative to locate the source(s) of vibration, and the specific changes that might occur to the vibration signals during its transmission through the seats to the recipient human body. With this objective, Seat Effective Amplitude Transmissibility (SEAT) values of seat modules used in dumpers (n = 10) and other heavy earth-moving machines (n = 11) were evaluated in an iron ore mine. Vibration was measured simultaneously on the seat and on the cabin floor beneath the seat using tri-axial and uni-axial accelerometers. The study aims at determining the quality of seat modules of the transport and non-transport vehicles from the perspective of their natural resonance frequencies and capability of any such seat in reducing harmful vibration. The highest acceleration values were observed in the z-axis for all the dumpers. SEATrms values ranged from 78 to 133% and SEATvdv values ranged from 72 to 130% for the dumpers. For other HEMMs, SEATrms values ranged from 55 to 125% and SEATvdv values ranged from 56 to 123%. Mechanical vibration contains multiple frequency components. To understand the changes taking place to the different signals at these frequencies, 1/3 octave band analysis was carried out for the signals recorded both on the seat and the floor. There was significant attenuation (38 to 57%) at 4 Hz for three Dumper seats, whereas they resonated in the range of 1.6–2.5 Hz. The transmissibility(%) in the resonating frequencies ranged from 108 to 156%. Resonance frequencies for the remaining seven dumpers ranged from 3 to 8 Hz. The spine has been reported to resonate at 4 Hz, whereas resonance at 1.6 Hz has little significance to human beings in regard to WBV of a seated person. Hence, the characteristic resonant frequency of 4 Hz of seats as observed in the present study has the potential of causing adverse impacts on spinal health. Evaluation of SEAT factors and resonance characteristics of seats are therefore recommended to be examined while selecting a mining vehicle for regular deployment in mines.

A modified push-pull field test and a computer model of cation exchange were developed to aid in evaluating cation exchange parameters prior to in situ mining. Reliable determination of these parameters is essential when modeling restoration of groundwater quality. The field test involves a much larger volume and much less disturbance to the ore sample than is feasible with laboratory measurements. This test can be performed in two or three weeks. It is relatively inexpensive, requiring one injection- production well and two or more wells for collecting samples of leach solution. The use of the model in interpreting test results is illustrated with field data from an in situ uranium mine. Much of the research was performed by the University of Texas at Austin, and was partially funded by the Bureau of Mines.

Rio Algom Limited are currently undergoing a major expansion of their mining operations in the Elliot Lake area. To date this has involved the increase of output at the Quirke Mine from 4080 to 6350 tonnes per mill day (4500 to 7000 tons), the rehabilitation of the Panel Mine to produce at the rate of 2990 tonnes per mill day (3300 tons) by 1980, and the rehabilitation of the Stanleigh Mine to produce 4540 tonnes per mill day (5000 tons) by 1984. In addition, the planning for the rehabilitation of the Milliken Mine to produce 4990 tonnes per mill day (5500 tons) is now underway. This major expansion is taking place at a time of increasing awareness of occupational health matters and has involved very high capital expenditures and detailed planning related to the ventilation system to endeavour the provision of an acceptable environment. The paper discusses the ventilation systems, established and proposed, and relates them to historical and current data on mine air contaminants.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently studied several redirected scrubber discharge configurations in its full-scale continuous miner gallery for both dust and gas control when using an exhaust face ventilation system. Dust and gas measurements around the continuous mining machine in the laboratory showed that the conventional scrubber discharge directed outby the face with a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust curtain setback appeared to be one of the better configurations for controlling dust and gas. Redirecting all the air toward the face equally up both sides of the machine increased the dust and gas concentrations around the machine. When all of the air was redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, gas accumulations tended to be reduced at the face, at the expense of increased dust levels in the return and on the curtain side of the mining machine. A 6.1-m (20-ft) exhaust curtain setback without the scrubber operating resulted in the lowest dust levels around the continuous mining machine, but this configuration resulted in some of the highest levels of dust in the return and gas on the off-curtain side of the mining face. Two field studies showed some similarities to the laboratory findings, with elevated dust levels at the rear corners of the continuous miner when all of the scrubber exhaust was redirected toward the face either up the off-tubing side or equally up both sides of the mining machine.

Industrial minerals are receiving increased attention by metals, coal and other companies seeking to diversify and stabilize earnings. Each industrial mineral has a unique set (and sub-sets) of business dynamics, however, and the diversity can present a bewildering maze to the corporate planner. Shrugging off this complexity and relying on serendipity for entry opportunities often results in unsuitable acquisitions. An effective alternative used in exploration can also be applied to strategic planning. By providing focus and direction, this flexible methodology can prevent wasting corporate resources on random pursuits and result in a quicker, more satisfactory achievement of diversification goals.

The mineral industries have a continuing need for market forecasting and analysis for a variety of purposes, among which are organization and control of the sales effort, financial and corporate planning, and evaluation of the anticipated revenue from investment in proposed projects. For anything beyond the simplest extrapolation, some kind of economic reasoning or analysis is called for, which may or may not be incorporated into a formal or quantitative model. The principles described here apply to most of the commercially significant minerals and metals. The examples are drawn largely from the copper market, as it is the one with which I have the most practical experience. Practical forecasting is the process of analysis and synthesis from three categories of knowledge: facts and statistics, theory, and practical knowledge and informed opinion. Although many attempts have been made to build forecasts on only one of these three pillars, none has been successful as an operating procedure because of the lack of balance. There are no facts about the future-only about the present and the past. Facts can illuminate the future, but the future can be described only in terms of probability or more or less likely states of affairs-not as a continuous extension of the past and present. Likewise, theory, although useful as an organizing discipline and for providing a methodology of analysis, is inadequate for the complexities of reality. This is especially so when there is feedback between plans and forecasts to produce a new outcome and when there are significant elements of unpredictable free will, such as presidential jawboning or foreign policy considerations. Such elements are difficult to accommodate in neat theories, although they must certainly be reflected in the forecasts. Pure opinion frequently suffers from both a lack of-disciplined reasoning and the presence of biases or self-interest. While the future is unknown, it tends to cast its shadow before it; hence, forecasting is the art and science of positioning oneself so that the shadow becomes visible to the forecaster.

Recent developments in the design of concentration plants have reflected the increased recognition that has been given to the economic and metallurgical advantages of autogenous grinding. This has manifested itself in the increasing adoption of primary auto genous grinding in iron ore 'beneficiation plants in North America. Table 1 lists eleven major iron ore beneficiation plants which have either been put in operation since 1961 or are under construction at present. Seven out of these eleven plants have adopted primary autogenous grinding. Four of them have coarse grinding mills (8 to 14 mesh) and three have fine grinding primary circuits (48 to 65 mesh). Their nominal capacity totals 26. 2 million ltpy of concentrates or pellets, representing very nearly 75% of the aggregate capacity 135. 3 million ltpy) of the eleven concentrators listed. For a long time there was a tendency to consider that primary autogenous grinding was only applicable to suitable coarse grained ores, However, extensive testing of a very wide variety of ores, and actual operating performance in several commercial plants, seem to have established beyond reasonable doubt, that the majority of mineral ores which the beneficiation engineer may be called upon to process can be ground autogenously. The basis for the selection of autogenous or conventional grinding mills, becomes principally economic and depends on the liberation characteristics of the ores under consideration and their relative hardness and grindability.

With modern exploration techniques, it seems likely that an increasing number of the orebodies to be found in the future will be under alluvial fans or valley fill. As a result, a larger proportion of open pit mines will be confronted with the necessity for removal of substantial quantities of alluvial overburden; whereas in the past, for the most part, the open pit mine operator has dealt mainly with hard rock. If this proves to be the case, methods, equipment, and costs for alluvium stripping will become an increasingly important factor in open pit mine planning. Several operations are now faced with this situation, and various methods and equipment are used. At Pima Mining Company's operation the stripping ratio is in the range of 6/1 Well over half of the stripping volume is alluvium. The alluvium is removed almost entirely by carryalls hauling direct to a waste dump. Some removal has been accomplished by shovel and truck operation; more will be done by this means in the future. At American Smelting and Refining Company's neighboring .Mission Mine, nearly all alluvium removal is by large shovels and, trucks. U. S. Borax's Boron operation is accomplishing alluvium removal with carryalls but has been investigating other methods and equipment. The various operations in the Gas Hills Uranium District in Wyoming are stripping mainly with carryalls, although some small draglines are employed. The M. A. Hanna Company in the Mesabi Range employs large draglines and conveyor systems for removal of glacial fill. Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines in Northern Rhodesia strips overburden with a large excavating wheel and conveyor system. There are no doubt other open pit operations with which the writer is not familiar, that are handling large quantities of alluvial overburden.

Introduction Although mining in one form or another has existed for millennia, the use of numerical methods for mine design is a relatively recent development. The basic physics that control the behavior of rock or soil have been known for centuries, but it wasn’t until the last half of the twentieth century that analytical methods that could accurately predict the behavior of a large, irregular rock mass were developed. Before the advent of modern computers combined with differential and integral analytical methods, numerical methods available to mining engineers were limited to closed form solutions for simple excavation geometries. Today, mine-scale three-dimensional stress analyses can be performed on a relatively inexpensive personal computer. Many of the recent advances in rock mechanics modeling are the result of research funded as part of nuclear waste repositories around the world. The large scale exacting performance requirements of waste repositories are frequently very different from traditional rock mechanics projects. These facilities are designed and built under tighter control and scrutiny because of the potential hazards they present to the public. Therefore, a great deal of research towards advancing rock mechanics and numerical modeling resulted from these projects. Much of the repository research is applicable to commercial mines. The advances in modeling programs have been paralleled by advances in computer equipment. Today, a moderately equipped personal computer can handle most mine geomechanical modeling projects in a reasonable period of time. While the learning curve varies, an engineer with modeling experience can develop a medium sized model in a few days. The relatively low investment cost of geomechanical modeling today makes it accessible to most mining operations. The benefits of a solid geomechanical modeling program include reduced operating costs, improved safety, and reduced design costs.
