Knight Piésold and Co. hosted its annual roundtable discussion on March 17, 2011 at the Stockman Hotel and Casino in Elko, NV. The theme for Roundtable 2011 was, ?High density tailings, paste, and filtered tailings,? although the topic may well have been subtitled, ?Don?t prematurely rule out any technologies before they are given their day in court.? Bryan Ulrich, Knight Piésold?s local representative, as well as Tom Kerr from Knight Piésold?s office in Denver, CO, were on hand to help facilitate the discussion. Ulrich and Kerr are senior vice president and president of Knight Piésold?s U.S. practice, respectively. The event played host to more than 30 attendees from several western states. Attendees included personnel from a dozen mining properties and various corporate offices. There were also attendees from manufacturing and specialist consulting firms who have been providing services to various high-density tailings, paste and filtered tailings operations worldwide. It may be noted that the term ?filtered tailings? is used in this discussion. Alternative terms, such as ?dry stack? or ?dewatered tailings,? should be avoided whenever possible, as such terms tend to give a false sense about the nature of the material since these materials typically still retain a significant amount of moisture.

There is as yet no accepted method of predicting flotation frother performance in plant processes based on laboratory scale characterisation techniques. This paper investigates the use of dynamic surface tension, using the maximum bubble pressure method, as a means of evaluating frothers and frother mixtures. An adsorption model is presented, which has been used to quantify the role of frother type and concentration during frother bubble interaction, based on the correlation of model parameters to physical frother characteristics. This approach was found to provide useful insight with respect to blending and selection of flotation frothers to meet specified flotation performance criteria.

Gypsum wallboard manufacturers in the United States shipped 3.18 billion m2 (34.2 billion sq ft) of wall-board products during 2004 versus 2.93 billion m2 (31.5billion sq ft) in 2003. Following a historic high production of gypsum wallboard products in 1999, production decreased in 2000. But it has steadily increased during2001 through 2004. Wallboard production in the United States increased about 8.6 percent in 2004 from 2003. Following several years of a “building boom” of new wallboard plants and the expansion of the manufacturing capacity of several existing plants, 2004 was a relatively quiet year. However, several new plants and capacity expansions were announced or are in progress during 2004.

The implementation of autonomous technologies for production in surface mines demands changes in the existing monitoring and control systems. The present study deals with the concepts involved in the development of a decision support system (DSS) for the supervision of a combined fleet of manned and unmanned equipment operating in a surface mine. The project was carried out as part of an autonomous mining program that lasted from early 2006 until the end of 2008. The objective of the DSS was to achieve short-term planning goals while maintaining safe working conditions. Supervisory tasks become more complex when several autonomous vehicles operate simultaneously alongside manned equipment. The operation center where the DSS was installed allowed autonomous vehicle operations to be controlled while tracking technology reliability experiments performed on control display interfaces and interaction provided design parameters for more complex supervisory systems for autonomous mines. This article advances an innovative concept explaining the connotation and technical system of "green" mining. The important theoretical foundations of "green" mining are the distribution and development characteristics of joints, fractures and bed separations, and the seepage and flow behavior of methane and water in the broken rock strata following coal mining. The main focus of "green" mining technique includes water-preservation in mining areas, coal mining under buildings with bed separation spaces grouted to retard surface subsidence, partial extraction and backfill mining, simultaneous extraction of coal and coal-bed methane, coal roadway supporting and underground disposal of rock waste, underground coal gasification, etc.

If an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM is operated effectively tunneling can be carried out producing negligible ground movements. Using the methods given in this paper face losses of the order of 0.5% and less are generally obtainable using an EPB. Operating the EPB TBM in this manner reduces the requirement for the building protection measures used to protect surface structures. This can result in a considerable cost saving for the construction of a tunnel under built up areas. This paper to give guidance on the causes of ground movements around a TBM and the methods of running an EPB TBM that will minimize those movements. Details of how this was successfully done during the construction of the Bangkok Metro are given. On August, 31, 2006, Tropical Storm Ernesto hit the City of Richmond, Virginia. The Battery Park area was hit particularly hard, as flooding forced an evacuation of the area. A large sinkhole collapsed a sewer line in the Battery Park area, blocking the pipe and causing more serious flooding. This case history describes the fast track design, bidding, and construction of an emergency tunnel to bypass the collapsed sewer. Innovative value engineering, tunneling and shaft sinking methods, and final lining design all contributed to the success of this project. The storm inundated Richmond, Virginia with up to twelve inches of rain in some areas causing widespread flooding and damage. One of the hardest hit areas of Richmond was Battery Park. A major trunk sewer in the Battery Park area collapsed causing local combined sewer and storm-water flooding. The collapsed sewer was an 8'-3" wide by 9'-6" high arch sewer that was constructed in the nineteen twenties and later filled over with municipal solid waste and a soil fill cap to current elevations. A sinkhole was created in the area of collapse approximately sixty feet deep and one hundred feet in diameter causing the existing arch sewer to become blocked. As a result of this blockage contaminated flood waters reached depths in low lying areas in excess of twenty five feet. [ ]

Centrifugal air classification and li-quid-phase sedimentation are the principal methods of industrially sizing materials of dimensions smaller than those handled by screens. Increasing application of materials such as composites and high performance ceramics has furthered the need for closely-sized, fine, industrial mineral and synthetic products of controlled properties. Sedimentation can be used to separate very small sized particles but introduces problems of liquid-solid separation, de-agglomeration and drying. Some of the advantages and limitations of centrifugal air classification will be discussed and laboratory and plant measurements using centrifugal machines will be presented to support the discussion.

Introduction Many old underground mines have been developed extensively into reserves requiring large numbers of workers to maintain and rehabilitate lengthy track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, large numbers of fans are required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. Problems that beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability are presented. Brief history The Vesta No. 5 mine was opened in 1908. Drift development began near the Monongahela River, which was the primary avenue for shipping metallurgical coal to coke ovens in Pittsburgh. Over the ensuing 75 years, the main haulage entries were developed a distance of 16.1 km (10 miles) to the present mining area. Track haulage was used to transport coal from working sections to the river loading facility. As haulage distance and areas of high water influx increased, management decided, in 1973, to construct an underground conveyor belt system. The project spanned 36 months and culminated in a system of 22 flights, ranging from 205.7 to 1767.8 m (675 to 5800 ft) long. Six intake and eight return entries were developed as the mains were advanced. These entries provided adequate ventilating capacity over the years, but as extensive gob areas progressed and roof conditions deteriorated, the entries became inaccessible and more resistant to airflow. By 1981, five fans were being used to circulate 943.9 m3/s (555.5 cfm) of air through the mine. An average of 6440 t (7100 st) were produced from 20.8 continuous miner unit shifts and 2.7 longwall unit shifts each day in 1981. The ratio of support to production personnel was 1.94. To maintain the outby 16.1 km (10 miles) of haulage, 110 personnel were used. The average cost per ton was $43.54 ($39.58 per st), resulting in excessive bottom-line losses. The mine possessed a rather promising reserve, mostly in lease, of good quality, medium-sulfur metallurgical coal, but it also had a number of formidable operating problems. Operating problems Contributing factors toward relatively low productivity and high costs were the conditions of the track haulage, conveyor, and ventilation systems. The Lake Hodges to Olivenhain Pipeline project is part of a 40-megawatt pumped storage project linking two reservoirs as part of the San Diego County Water Authority’s $939 million Emergency Storage Project. Seeking to expedite project completion, the project was advertised as Design-Build, a first for the owner. Awarded to Kiewit Pacific with Parsons as designer, the 1,750m (5,700ft) long, 4.25-m (14 ft) horseshoe tunnel was excavated with conventional drill-and-shoot technique. The mining method was well suited to deal with the shear zones, the very abrasive rock, and 13.3% and19.6% grades. At the apex of the alignment, a 60m (200ft) by 3.6m (12ft) diameter raisebore shaft with surge chamber to protect against pump malfunction was constructed. Upon completion of mining, the tunnel was lined with a 3m (10 ft) diameter high strength steel pipe. Scheduled to come on-line by January 1, 2008, the Lake Hodges to Olivenhain pumped storage project is valued at $108 million, delivering a reliable source of water in emergency situations and electricity-generating capability to meet the growing demands of the San Diego region.

Experience has shown that, since the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, over-compaction of spoil during the reclamation process has severely limited tree growth on reclaimed land. Researchers at the University of Kentucky have conducted a ten-year investigation at a surface mine in eastern Kentucky that monitored the changes in selected spoil physical characteristics for various reclamation and compaction alleviation methods. More specifically, research plots were developed for reforestation that employed three different levels of compaction and two different methods of ripping for overly compacted spoil. Each year measurements were made in the field of dry bulk density, using a nuclear density gage, and maximum penetration depth, using a recording cone penetrometer. In addition to good correlation between tree growth and selected spoil characteristics, the data demonstrated a gradual convergence of the measured spoil characteristic data over the study period.

During the past several years — much to the delight of producing firms and countries — copper prices have surged from under $1 to more than $3/lb. Anyone familiar with the industry also knows that since the early 1970s the long-run trend in real copper prices has been significantly downward. This sharp contrast between short-run and long-run trends raises the issue of the forces behind these developments. What has been driving short-run prices up and long-run prices down? Simple economics suggests that it is all a matter of supply and demand. When demand is rising faster than supply, prices will rise and vice versa.

One of the most common errors uncovered while performing a reserve, or resource, audit is not in the geological modeling or grade problems due to poor sampling, prepartion or assaying. The error most commonly found is in tonnage or, more specifically, in the tonnage factor - that factor applied to volume to derive tonnage. Tonnage factors In the metric system, the tonnage factor is the density, or specific gravity. Specific gravity (Sp.g.) is defined by Dana (1947): • "The specific gravity of a mineral is the ratio of its density to that of water at 4° C (39.2° F). • "Density is the mass of the unit volume or weight of the body divided by the weight of an equal volume of water." When Sp.g. is multiplied by the metric volume it yields metric tonnes. In the English system, the tonnage factor is usually expressed in cubic feet per short ton (cu ft/st). When the volume in cubic feet is divided by cu ft/st, the resulting figure is in English short tons. Table 1 gives the cu ft/st factors equivalent to specific gravities from 1.6 Sp.g. to 5.8 Sp.g. The table is based on the following equation: cu ft/st = 0.9072 divided by Sp.g. times 0.02832 The blase attitude that most geologists have toward tonnage factors is echoed in the prevailing definitions of Reserves and Ore, as provided by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (S.C Form S-18), Canadian National Policy 2A and the SME Proposal for Reporting Terminology (SME February 1991). In each case, it is stated that "quantity" (SEC, SME), or "tonnage" (Can.2A), "is computed from dimensions revealed in...." etc. Unfortunately, "dimensions" do not directly yield tonnage. Dimensions must be factored by density to derive tonnage.

"The mineral raw materials industry is a key-component of the Gross Domestic Product of industrialised economies, closely related to both the building and the industrial sectors. Despite this, at local level mining and quarrying are associated with both irreversible environmental damage and several visual alterations affecting the natural landscape. In this sense, SIA (Social Impact Assessment) has become a strategic tool that can not only improve the prediction but also the assessment of the social impact by involving the local communities in a participatory process. Taking into account the SIA experience, together with the examination of some relevant international case studies, it is possible to draw up a list of good practices for mining project management, from exploration through to closure and beyond, with quarry restoration. Such good practices will complement the existing studies, focusing on environmental issues, with the social issues arisen considered in SIA application."

What decision making tools and methods are available to a project owner when there is no clear differentiator between construction alternatives? A team led by a joint venture of Parsons Brinckerhoff and PGH Wong Engineering (PB/Wong) has been providing preliminary engineering services to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). The SFMTA and PB/Wong team developed several alternative construction methods for the tunnels and stations of the San Francisco Central Subway Project, none of which could be judged clearly better than another using traditional approaches and metrics. The team employed a risk assessment and analysis frame-works as a means of comparative analysis, drawing upon the knowledge of industry experts in the geotechnical, tunneling and construction fields to assist in the effort. This paper presents the approach and results of a cost and schedule risk analysis for two such analyses designed to answer two different questions regarding the advisability of different construction approaches. These assessments paved the way for key decision making in the preliminary engineering phase of the project and formed the foundation for continuing risk management efforts on the project. The focus of this paper is primarily the first two stages of risk management?identification and assessment?and some of the organizational dynamic issues that arise in such efforts.

The mineral resource potential of the Los Bronces deposit was successfully evaluated by an intense, coordinated program over a 37-month period (April 1978-May 1981) as part of an economic feasibility study. The program included more than 120 km of core drilling, 63 km of access road construction under adverse topographic and climatic conditions, detailed geological mapping, plus other related activities. This Tertiary-age copper-molybdenum deposit is composed of an earlier mineralized porphyry-type body intruded in part by a large complex of mineralized hydrothermal breccia pipes. Both intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks are present. Erosion, oxidation, leaching, and supergene enrichment of copper have resulted in a deposit now exposed at the surface that contains more than 368 Mt grading about 1% copper equivalent as sulfides.

Borates are essential to life, and to many products that are essential to an acceptable standard of living. They occur naturally in seawater at an average concentration of five milligrams of boron per liter. Fresh water lakes, rivers, streams and ground water generally have concentrations of about one milligram boron per liter. Borates are also present in soil at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to three milligrams of boron per kilogram. Because most of that boron is locked into insoluble minerals, clay or organic matter, boron deficiency is more widespread than boron enrichment. Borates evaporate into the atmosphere from seawater, rain, snow and hot springs. In rain and snow, natural boron concentrations range from 0.002 and 0.1 milligrams boron per liter. All told, boron moves through the atmosphere at a rate of 5 Mt to 7 Mt/a (5.5 million to 7.7 million stpy).

Traditionally, mineral sands are evaluated by preparing several mineral products using a combination of heavy liquid-, magnetic-, and electrostatic methods. Whole-rock assays (WRA) are then conducted on ilmenite, rutile and zircon products in order to determine trace element contents, which may affect project feasibility. Combined methods can be time consuming, expensive and even outdated due to the use of banned and toxic chemicals such as clerici solution. Coupled with large field-sample quantities, these procedures can potentially introduce unacceptable sampling and related errors. Modern mineralogical analysis techniques can provide complete mineralogical inventories on a single THM product, reducing the amount of processing involved in satisfactory characterization of early exploration samples. A small exploration sample can be processed to produce a small THM concentrate using readily available gravity/density methods. In turn, the THM product is submitted for Whole Rock Analysis (WRA) and mineralogical inspection by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and microscopic evaluation. Modal mineralogy and textural data can be determined using optical methods, automated image analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) based systems. Benefits of automation are reproducibility and the capability of rapidly analysing thousands of particles as opposed to manual optical methods. Automated systems include the use of Automated Digital Image Analysis (ADIS), and SEM-based systems such as the Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) and QemSCAN. For detailed mineral chemistry, microanalysis techniques ranging from electron microprobe (EMPA) to Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry and Laser Ablation Mass-Induced Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LAM-ICP-MS) are used. Examples of these automated and analytical methods are presented. ADIS at SGS-Lakefield Research uses optical characteristics to identify and measure mineral species in THM samples; rutile, pseudorutile, ilmenite and leucoxene can be distinguished. Analysis of a single THM product provides bulk modal mineralogy and grain size distribution of particles and the individual mineral grains. Textural information is also obtained detailing mineral associations as well as degree of alteration. Where textural and chemical resolution renders mineral identification ambiguous, SEM-based methods offer better resolution. Examples of this ambiguity are shown in this paper, which leads to QemSCAN as the preferred method where within-grain variability is concerned. Sampling and measurement strategies are followed to meet study objectives, providing a value-added framework for a sequential, cost-effective strategy, which will meet due diligence and bankable accreditation criteria. Studying a THM product by electron microprobe and LAMICP-MS may reveal potential fatal flaws related to mineral chemistry. Low detection limits in the range of 200 to 500ppm are possible using electron microprobe analysis for suitable matrixes (U, Th in zircon). For the detection of ultra low level elemental contaminants, LAM ICPMS is the most accurate method of evaluation. Elements including U, Th, La, Ce, Nb, and V in Ti-minerals can be determined down to 50 ppm.

Most geologic and mining engineering consulting firms* began to experience the recession with declining billing levels, number of inquiries, and proposal requests in late 1981 or early 1982. As of today, most of them have been functioning at reduced income levels for nearly a year. And while many consulting firms have apparently reached a stabilized income level, they can see little prospect for attaining normal (pre-late 1981) billing levels and income for the remainder of 1983. A few firms have escaped being affected by the recession. Such com panies almost without exception are small (fewer than 20 personnel), offer a limited range in technical capabilities, and tend to be highly specialized in a particular niche. They include those specializing in the heap leaching of precious metals ores, in ground water testing programs, and in the derivation of computer-aided programs to monitor particular mineral processing functions. Those firms affected by the economic downturn have instituted a variety of policies and undertaken actions to cope with significantly reduced incomes to bring fixed costs in line with the depressed demand for services. These changes fall into the following broad categories: • management and management practices; • markets and market definition; • marketing and the pursuit of assignments; and • administration and personnel relationships. Not all of the perceived changes have necessarily been instituted by every consulting firm, and any one appears sporadically instituted. Management and Management Practices In favorable times the managers, and often the owners of the equity, of consulting firms tend to concentrate their attention on the part of the business they find most satisfying and enjoyable. For some, this means acting as project or assignment leaders, even undertaking a specific technical aspect of the job. For others, it means constant marketing with the associated heavy travel and entertainment schedules. In unfavorable conditions, such as the current recession, managers tend to spread themselves far more thinly, expending time and effort on all facets of the business including marketing, proposal preparation and cost estimating, budgeting, general administration, accounting and cash flow monitoring, project/assignment overview, and actual client work. The manager who in favorable times concentrated on client work is now less billable. The manager who concentrated on marketing is somewhat more billable. The manager now needs to pay attention to and expend equal effort on each facet of the business just to keep all the facets in relative balance. Falling behind schedule on a client job or carrying an unduly large percentage of accounts receivable exact a cost to the firm. Clearly the absolute cost to the firm is the same whether demand for service is good or slack. But in periods of slack demand the firm is frequently less able or even unable to bear such costs. Marketing and Market Definition Markets appear to have undergone some significant changes: • Federal and state governments have assumed a greater importance as providers of work vis-a-vis both industry and private groups. • Projects with increase-in-capacity aspects have given way to projects with maintenance or reduced operating cost aspects. • Projects searching for new deposits of minerals in generally new locations have given way to projects reviewing known mineral districts or known deposits. • Industrial mineral and mining companies have exhibited a great propensity to cut back the use of consultants and to undertake as much work as possible in-house. Further-more, a number of industrial mineral and mining companies have entered the competitive arena with consulting firms, submitting proposals (usually to the federal government) in an effort to keep their staffs intact and occupied. In response, consulting firms have reevaluated their capabilities by reviewing old work and reassessing personnel. The purpose is to broaden the services offered and the potential client base, thus redefining the available market. For example, a firm specializing in assessment of technical and cost parameters of a deposit would normally assist a prospective lender in judging the deposit's suitability for project financing. That same company could easily expand into the field of analyzing production costs for an individual operation -something that is needed in periods when lower prices reduce profit margins. Similarly, a firm that has confined such economic assistance to commercial banks could expand to provide its expertise to other lending and even equity buying in-stitutions such as insurance companies. SUMMARY Commitment by all parties to partnering goals established early in the contract aided Affholder, Inc. in constructing 2,360m (7,700') of soft ground tunnel in Rancho Cordova, CA. Despite two zones of known contamination, encountering a zone of loose cobbles and boulders in a matrix of flowing sand, some perched water tables and a flooded tunnel after 2 upstream safety plugs failed, the Contractor finished the work 33 days early and only 1.91% over his original bid.
