EMPLOYERS of engineers have not always been satisfied with the training that young graduates have received in the conventional four-year course. Specifically, employers of petroleum engineers for a number of years have believed that a four-year course does not allow sufficient time for the student to secure a fundamental engineering background plus the fundamentals of petroleum engineering. A group of California employers went so far as to set up a type of curriculum for a petroleum-engineering course, which was based on four years of undergraduate work and one year of graduate work, with most of the petroleum-engineering courses included in the graduate year.

THE following paper has been prepared to meet a demand for a concise review of the California oil industry. It is based largely upon information secured during the course of the senior, author's professional activities, and upon data obtained during the course of investigations for the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Considerable information has been obtained from other sources, and to those who by publication or otherwise have contributed, the writers extend their thanks. GENERAL STATEMENT In 1912 the United States produced 63.25 per cent. of the world's production of petroleum, Russia, its nearest competitor, yielding only . about 19 per cent. The production in 1912 reached 222,113,218 barrels (or 29,615,096 metric tons), compared with 220,449,391 barrels in 1911. The average price per barrel in 1912 was nearly 74 c., as against nearly 61 c. in 1911. The total value, therefore, increased 22.20 per cent., or $163,802,334 above the value for the previous year. These figures of production include pipe-line runs, independent railroad shipments, oil piped direct to refineries, and the crude oil consumed as fuel in oil production. The production does not include oil in storage in the field which has not been sold.

SALKOVITZ1 has given a number of useful angles between planes for use with the Laue method in determining the orientation of bismuth single crystals. Bismuth is usually considered as having a face-centered-rhombohedra1 structure with its axial angle 87°34', Fig. 1. A similar figure given by Sal-kovitz appears to be in error in that the angle there marked as 87°34' should be 92°26. The primitive cell is a single rhombohedron of axial angle 570 14. The structure is almost face-centered-cubic and hence high accuracy in measurements is essential if there is to be no confusion in indexing poles or zone axes. It is easier to get this accuracy if zone axes are plotted on the stereogram because they will lie near the basic circle where the net has a more open scale. The zone axes can be read from the film, using a Greninger chart, and can be plotted more accurately than poles. Also, the angles between points near the basic circle can be read more accurately than those between poles near the center. In order to use the zone axes the angles between directions have been calculated from a formula given by Niggli,2 and are given in Table I. Miller indices

In order to evaluate the ability of a Hydrafrac treatment to effect a sustained increase in well production, data were accumulated on the first 65 wells in 26 fields treated by Stano-lind. Since these data were obtained from such a large number of fields, it is felt that individual well or reservoir characteristics do not affect the overall picture, as might be the case if the study were made in one field or one group of wells in a field. These data are tabulated in Table I and plotted on Figs. 1 and 2. An analysis of Fig. 1 shows that at the end of six months, 75 per cent, or 45, of 60 wells on which data were available showed a sustained production increase. At the end of two years, data were available on 25 wells. Of these, 15 wells, or 60 per cent, showed a sustained production increase. At the end of three years, 55 per cent, or 10, of 18 wells had a production rate greater at that time than before Hydrafrac treatment. The lack of information on additional wells at the end of the third year is primarily a result of the small number of treatments conducted in the early stages of field application

Hofman and Hayward in their experiments, proving that a low percentage of copper sulphate with a variable percentage of salt, depending on the ore, gives the best results, confirm practical mill-work which I did in 1895. I have none of my notes, taken at the time, to refer to, so have to rely solely on memory, which precludes the conciseness that is alway desirable. In 1894 I took charge of the plant of the San Rafael Company, near Chinipas, Chihuahua, Mex., which at that time was treating a very refractory ore carrying about $15 in gold and from 20 to 25 oz. of silver per ton, the bullion being about 300 fine in gold. The silver in the ore was in the form of a sulphide. Although carrying an average of 0.75 oz. of gold per ton, free gold could rarely be seen by panning, but upon roasting a sample of the ore the gold became visible at once—a result which was discovered by chance and used to advantage later. In order to utilize the old mill to the best advantage, it was decided to use pan-amalgamation after roasting. The roasting, done in a lime-kiln, was similar to the ordinary " burning " operation. The roasted ore was trammed to the mill-bins and crushed by 10 stamps to pass a 30-mesh screen. The pulp was de-watered and fed to four 1-ton pans. My recollection is that upon starting the mill-work, the charge contained 1.5 lb. of copper sulphate and 5 per cent. of salt per ton. From the start the extraction was unsatisfactory and the loss of quicksilver was very large. Experiments were then carried out on a working scale. Densities of cerium metal and several lour-melting binary cerium alloys were measured over the range 25° to 800°C. A rolumeter, using NaK as working fluid, was used to obtain the data. The cerium, Ce-Co, Ce-Ni, and Ce-Cu alloys all exhibited an increase in density on melting, while a Ce-Mn alloy expanded on melting. FOR the proper design of a nuclear reactor, the change in density of the fuel with temperature must be known. This is especially important in a system utilizing molten fuel, such as LAMPRE (Los Alamos Molten Plutonium Reactor Experiment), since a relatively large change in density usually occurs during the solid-liquid transition. The fuel for LAMPRE is a Pu-2.5 wt pct Fe alloy with a melting temperature of 410°C. However, limitations in reactor design with this fuel have led to consideration of other plutonium-containing alloys for use in future generations of this type of reactor. Several ternary alloys containing plutonium and cerium as two components have satisfactorily low melting points. The system that at the present time appears to be most acceptable is Pu-Ce-Co; it exhibits little change in melting temperature with wide variation in plutonium concentration. Other alloys that have received some consideration contain nickel, copper, and manganese as the third constituent. The proposed fuel alloys are difficult to handle experimentally in the 25" to 800°C temperature range since they oxidize readily, react with many solvents, and contain a poisonous fissionable material. In addition, in this temperature range the alloys pass through the solid-liquid transition. Several techniques are available for measuring the densities and volume coefficients of expansion of solids or liquids. However, the only apparatus that appears suitable for measuring expansion coefficients over this temperature range and through the phase transition is a volumeter. In a volumeter, the indicating medium must be essentially inert to and insoluble in the material being studied. It must also possess a low vapor pressure over the operating temperature range, and its coefficient of expansion must be accurately known. One material that is satisfactory in nearly all of these respects is the alloy Na-78 wt pct K, which melts at -10°C and has a vapor pressure of 860 mm Hg at 800°C. This relatively high vapor pressure at 800°C requires an overpressure of an inert gas to prevent boiling. While a volumeter is capable of determining accurately the volume coefficients of expansion of materials, it cannot be used for absolute density measurements. Therefore, a density determination at a known temperature must be coupled with the volumeter measurements to give all the desired data. The weight-loss technique using immersion in bromobenzene at room temperature proved to be satisfactory. The preliminary work that was done on this experimental program involved developing and calibrating the equipment, and measuring the densities and volume coefficients of expansion of cerium and some low-melting binary cerium alloys. The complications that are caused with the introduction of plutonium into the system were avoided until the equipment was proved to be satisfactory and until experience was gained in its operation. It is this first phase of the experimental work that is described in this report. DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT AND OPERATING PROCEDURE The NaK volumeter is shown schematically in Fig. 1. Basically, the equipment consists of two weld-sealed stainless-steel containers of nearly identical volume. One container holds a tantalum crucible and the specimen being measured; the other contains a tantalum crucible and a tantalum specimen used as a control reference material. To avoid temperature gradients, the bombs are located in a copper block inside the furnace. Stainless-steel capillaries of equal length and volume connect each stainless-steel container to a glass viewing capillary. The stainless-steel containers, stainless-steel capillaries, and a portion of the glass capillaries are filled with NaK (22 wt pct Na-78 wt pct K). The NaK/gas interface in the glass capillary is viewed with a cathetometer which is accurate to *0.5 mm. The cathetometer readings are used to calculate the volume changes of the samples during a run. This volumeter is basically the same as that described by F. Knight in Plutonium 1960. 2 However, changes in equipment design and operating procedure were made to eliminate some major operating difficulties. The effect of small solute additions of Cu on the activation energies for creep A1 single crystals were determined over the range from 78° to 850° K. Below 240°K and above 800°K activation energies were unchanged. Between 240°K and 400°K strain aging causes the creep rate to become vanishingly small and the flow stress was independent of the temperature. Between 500° and 50°K the activation energy was increased to 41,000 cal per mole. NUMEROUS investigationsL have shown that solid solution alloying invariably increases the flow stress. A typical example is documented in Fig. 1. Such increases in flow stress can arise from two general effects: Alloying can increase the long-range stress fields through which dislocations must move by causing appropriate clustering; modification of dislocation densities, and so forth. Alloying can also modify the short-range stress fields that determine the activation energies for thermally stimulated migration of dislocations, such as occurs in some solute atom pinning processes, and so forth. Actually both long- and short-range stress-field effects can occur simultaneously. It was the purpose of this investigation to evaluate the effect of alloying on the short-range stress fields by determining the effect of alloying on the activation energies for creep. The resulting observations also shed some light on the effect of long-range stress fields on dislocation processes. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Single-crystal bars (6 in. long 3/8 in. wide and l/4 in. thick) of dilute solutions of Cu in A1 were seeded, so as to provide extensive single slip, with the pole of the tensile axis located in the standard stereographic projection as shown in Fig. 2. Each crystal was grown under an argon atmosphere in a graphite mold containing a large reservoir of molten alloy for the purpose of obtaining rather uniform composition of Cu along the length of the bar. The nominal compositions of the alloys which were produced from 99.99 pct Cu and high-purity A1 containing 0.001 pct Fe and 0.001 pct Si, are given in Table I. Strains, measured by linear variable transformers attached by quartz rods to a 3 in. gage section were sensitive to and the stresses were ap- plied by direct loading of the specimen. Temperatures were determined by thermocouples attached to the gage section of the specimens. Below 400°K the apparent activation energies for creep, Q, were determined by the effect of small, rapid changes in temperature of about + 10°K from T1 to T2 on the corresponding creep rates ?1 and ?2 during primary creep according to where R is the gas constant.' Above 400°K, Q was evaluated from Eq. [1] for the secondary creep rate using temperature changes of about ±20K. A typical set of results is shown in Fig. 3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The previously obtained effect of temperature on the apparent activation energy for creep of single crystals of high-purity A12 is shown by the broken curve of Fig. 4. The datum points on the same graph illustrate the effect of dilute a solid solution alloying with Cu on the activation energy between 600" and 750°K. The purpose of this paper is to start a discussion on: (I) methods of supporting the immediate roof, particularly of local areas of poor roof, during the mechanical loading of coal; (2) methods of increasing the rapidity of the movement of the mining faces so that, without the use of cribs, jacks, park walls, and filling, there will be no danger to men, equipment, and working places from the subsidence of the overlying strata. In the Pittsburgh district the application of mechanical loading devices in mines working in the Pittsburgh seam has been retarded by the difficulties of holding and handling the draw slate. Normally the thickness of this slate averages about 8 in. but the hardness varies, and a cut of coal cannot always be loaded without placing posts or crossbars to support the slate. Locally, the slate may be thicker and special methods of support may be required. If crossbars are placed to hold the slate when the coal averages 5 ft. in thickness, the standard methods of transporting the coal cannot be followed, and the use of conveyors may be desirable. Very little information is available on the effect of increasing the rate of movement of advancing or retreating break lines or longwall faces. A few British publications have presented some data but all such data relate to longwall faces that have moved not more than 6 ft. a day. The most rapid rate of movemerit of longwall faces in Germany is 6 ft. per day. In the ordinary hand-loading mine in western Pennsylvania break lines on full retreat will move about 2 ft. per day. If loading machines are used under similar conditions the rate of retreat may reach 4 ft. per day. In a mine where coal is loaded by hand on conveyors three shifts per day, the rate of retreat has ranged from 11 to 16 ft. per day, with an average of 13 ft. In 1866, Thomas Graham1 called attention to the volume of gases, three times the volume of the sample, evolved from a meteoric iron heated in an evacuated porcelain tube. From that time to this the occurrence and significance of gases in metals have been the subject of investigation by many workers, among whom Sieverts,2 Iwasé3 and 0. W. Ellis4 stand preeminent. Sieverts and Iwasé concerned themselves with the solubility of a number of gases in metals in the liquid and solid states. They determined the absorption coefficients of these gases, and in all cases found a sharp change in solubility at the melting point of the metals. Ellis analyzed the gases evolved by solidifying copper and those occluded by the solidified metal. Lobley and Jepson5 endeavored to determine the effects of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and nitrogen on the porosity of copper that was allowed to solidify in the presence of each gas after 30 min. exposure to it in the

UP TO June, 1923, the Park-Utah mine had shipped about 94,000 tons of a direct-smelting ore of a gross value of $4,200,000, or about $45. a ton. These values were in gold and silver only, although the ore carried small amounts of lead, copper and zinc. Freight, treatment and deductions had averaged $15.40 a ton. At the expiration of the Pittman Silver Act there was in sight about 30,000 tons of a similar ore with a gross value of about $15 a ton in gold and silver, and a large body of partly developed lead-zinc ore of a gross value of about $20 a ton, 40 per cent. of which was represented by the lead-zinc content and the balance by the silver and gold. Mine costs had been high during the life of the Pittman Act, but as a large part of the profits had gone into equipment of the mine and the orebodies were large and had good walls, we knew that mine costs could be greatly reduced. We were therefore faced by the necessity of getting lower freight and smelter rates or of concentrating the ore. We did obtain better freight rates on lower grade ore, and a favorable smelting rate on the small tonnage of siliceous silver-gold ore, but this smelter rate could not be applied to the lead-zinc ore with any profit to ourselves. The Judge mill of the Park City Mining & Smelting Co., with which we were affiliated, was running to capacity; if we built our own mill it meant a 5-mile freight haul to a satisfactory millsite and a year's delay. Fortunately, the International Smelting Co. had just inherited a mill at Tooele which, with some changes, was about double the capacity required for its own ores. Flotation tests were run on Park-Utah ore and a contract entered into with a low base treatment charge per ton, the tariff being largely fixed by the metallurgical deductions. This contract has been admirably calculated so that the miner can follow a lean orebody to its limit. Such a procedure has no doubt made it difficult for the smelting company at times, but it has resulted in finding ore extensions that otherwise might have been missed, so in the long run it has profited too. A flat rate per ton would have been like mining up to the claim endlines in a great many of the stopes. In order to offer such a contract it can be inferred that the smelting company must have been able to make high recoveries and high-grade products on a very lean ore.

WITH gold at $35 for the last four years, almost double the old figure, and 'an unlimited market, there is perhaps more activity in the mining and milling of that metal than in that of any other of the widely distributed ores. Despite threats from Russia, the Rand district is still dominant. In South Africa in 1936, 48,200,000 tons of gold ore was crushed after sorting out about 10 per cent of that mined. The pounding of 5914 trusty stamps on the 60 mi. of Rand reefs is noteworthy. At the end of 1935, 466 tube mills were operating on the Rand, the popular size being 6 1/2 by 20 ft. The grinding medium normally consists of ore pebbles picked from the ore but recently a composite load of 3-in. steel balls and pebbles has found favor for added capacity, a ratio of 2.5 tons of pebbles to one ton of halls being maintained. The total ore fed to the mills is only about 0.14 ton per hp.-hr. Such a slow rate 'of feed cannot help but result in overgrinding. Ball mills, 9 by 8 ft., some of which have come from Canada, are now being tried. Stamps have been ousted from all new flow sheets, but the old stamp mills are continually renovated and kept on duty as they are at the Homestake in the United States. Half of the world's gold and silver ores is still crushed by stamps, a few of which are single, dropping in individual mortars.'

The diffision coefficient for self-diffision of plutonium in the temperature range 350" to 440°C has been measured by using puZ3 as the tracer isotope. Autoradiopaphic techniques were used to inzlestigate the possibility of grain boundary diffusion, hut only evidence for volume diffusion was found. The least-squares fit of the data gives the .following equation for the diffision coefficient: The computer least-squares technique for fitting the nonlinear equations is outlined. DETERMINATION of the self-diffusion coefficient of the fcc 6 phase of plutonium is in principle a straightforward experimental task. However, the chemical reactivity, the intense @ activity, and the toxicity of plutonium put limitations on the experimental techniques. The technique selected included roll bonding for preparation of the diffusion couples and pulse-height analysis of the @-particle activity to determine the distribution of the PU tracer in the diffusion couples. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Couple Preparation. Cylinders about 0.5 in. in diam were cast from two special stocks of plutonium, one of which had been enriched in puZ3', as shown in the isotopic analyses listed in Table I. For each roll-bonded composite sheet, a cylinder 0.437 in. in diam and 0.190 in. thick was turned from each kind of plutonium on a lathe in a 98 pct He atmosphere. The two freshly machined cylinders were positioned face to face in a tube of commercially pure aluminum which had been sealed at one end by welding and the assembly was evacuated on a vacuum manifold overnight. The elapsed time between machining the faces of the plutonium cylinders and evacuating the loaded tube was about 15 min. After overnight evacuation of the assembly the indicated vacuum was 1 X 10"5 torr or better. The aluminum tube was then warmed and pinched off with a cold-welding tool. The pinched-off weld was also fusion-welded as an additional precaution against leakage of air into the evacuated assembly. The assembly was immediately heated for 30 min in a 250°C furnace and reduced in thickness by being passed through a rolling mill with rolls heated to 200°C. The rolling schedule (four passes of 100 mils each with a 10-min reheat after two passes) reduced the thickness of the assembly to 100 mils. The rolled assembly was allowed to cool normally in air. The rolled assembly was sheared at the edges and the aluminum peeled from the composite plutonium sheet. The elliptical sheet was about 0.060 in. thick and usually three 0.383-in.-diam disks could be punched from its central portion. The sheet was heated on a hot plate to the ductile low 0 range (140°C as measured by temperature-indicating pellets) before each disk was quickly punched. The quality of the bond in the disks was evaluated by metallographic examination of the scrap sheet adjoining the hole left by the punch. Only well-bonded specimens without oxide in the interface (as indicated by metallography) were considered satisfactory for further use. More than half of the specimens so examined contained sufficient oxide in the interface to be rejected. Diffusion Anneal. Each disk to be diffusion-annealed was wrapped in 1-mil-thick tantalum foil and sealed within a Pyrex capsule evacuated to 1 x 10~5 torr or better. This capsule was then sealed within another Pyrex capsule at a similar pressure. The diffusion anneals were carried out at temperatures between 350" and 440°C in Marshall furnaces adjusted to have a temperature gradient of not more than *1/2"C over a 5-in. length. This gradient was then further smoothed by using a nickel tube as a liner in the furnace. The liner was divided into three longitudinal cavities by a septum of nickel sheet to which two calibrated Chromel-Alumel thermocouples were attached. One thermocouple was used for controlling the furnace temperature by means of a Brown Pyrovane controller equipped with a Capaciline anticipation circuit; the second thermocouple was monitored twice daily with a Leeds and Northrup K-2 precision potentiometer.

AS I have told you before, "alloy" here signifies nothing but the mixture of one metal with another in friendly companionship. Whenever you wish to do this, you should consider the purpose that moves you, whether it is to increase the quantities, or for corruption. Then you should choose whatever has by its nature more affinity with what you wish to alloy, or whatever is best for your purpose. Give it in the melt the proportion that you wish or as much as it can support without being entirely removed from its first nature, as [73v] water is in wine or white in black if too much is added. However, you must make the proportion with a definite ratio by weight and not by chance in order that you may bring your work to the degree of perfection that you desire. For he who, proceeds with his eyes closed not only stumbles many times but frequently falls. Therefore you must know first that gold does not join in an alloy with any metal other than silver and copper. Thus if you wish to make a work of gold or to have it made, and begrudge the expense of having it fine, or if you find that you do not have enough, or if you do not care about such fineness, you must decide exactly how many carats less than perfectly fine you wish it to be, or by what weight you wish it to be increased. In order to do this accurately weigh the fine gold that you have and accompany it with silver or fine copper in the quantity that you wish to give it, and melt both these things together very well. So that you may understand the procedure better, let us suppose that you wish your gold to be 23 carats. You are to imagine that the whole quantity is twenty-four parts because this is the final limit at which the gold can be perfect. Now if this were the case, you would put in one part, which corresponds to one twenty-fourth of the whole quantity. Several very interesting articles have been written on the caving system of mining, but most of these papers have dealt separately with the slusher system or the chute and grizzly system. In this paper, a comparison will be made of the two methods, both of which are being used at the Climax mine. The mine is on the Continental Divide, in central Colorado, at an altitude of approximately 11,500 ft. above sea level. The long, cold winters, characteristic of the high Rockies, create a number of operating problems not usually found in other mining areas. The Ore Body The Climax ore body is just east of the Mosquito fault. This structural deformation has brought the granite on the east against the sedimentary rocks on the west. The ore occurs in an intensely altered granite and schist around a silicified granite core. The ore is in a highly fractured zone of moderate silicification. The principal mineral, molybdenite, is found in these fractures. Barren dikes of granite porphyry cut through the ore body and core with no apparent regularity. The grade of the ore is fairly uniform and gradually decreases toward the footwall core and also into the hanging-wall granite. The footwall and hanging wall are determined entirely by assays. The ore body is roughly dome-shaped, with the apex truncated at the surface. It is covered to varying depths with talus. A horizontal section of the ore body on the Phillipson level appears as an annular ellipse surrounding the footwall core. The ring of ore varies in width from 300 ft. to as much as 800 ft. The north-south axis of the core is about 1200 ft. and the east-west axis is about 1800 ft. In the ore zone, the rock is sufficiently strong to maintain reasonably large openings, and openings larger than haulage drifts usually have to be supported. The ore is cut by a great many fractures and shears and breaks into rather large blocks when caved, necessitating considerable secondary blasting. The waste that overlies the ore body breaks relatively fine in comparison with the size of the blocks of the caved ore and tends to run through the broken ore in the cave, causing dilution unless the draw is carefully controlled. Mining Systems For several years the ore was mined by the chute and grizzly system, a system that differs from that used in other caving mines only in the size of openings and equipment. I. HISTORY OF OIL DEVELOPMENT IN MEXICO THE occurrence of oil or "tar" in Mexico was mentioned as early as the seventeenth century by Friar Sagahun, who gives the Indian name "chapopote," by which these asphalt seepages are still called. This asphalt was apparently used, as it has been used by primitive people in many parts of the world, in religious ceremonies and for medicinal purposes. Travellers also report that the ruins in Yucatan and the pyramids in southern Mexico show traces of the use of "chapopote" as a building cement.1 DeGolyer says that the first attempt to exploit oil or gas in Mexico in a commercial way is shown by the records of the Memoria de Fomento of 1865, when permission was granted to a Senor Ildefonso Lopez to exploit the deposits of petroliferous substances in the San Jose de Ias Rusias area in the State of Tamaulipas. Other concessions follow, and probably refer to surface seepages which occur in that district. This was several years after the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania. In 1868, a well 125 ft. deep was drilled by a company organized in Mexico City, in what is now known as the Furbero district, and a little oil was refined there. In 1873, residents of Tampico denounced seepages along the Tamesi River, and asphalt was mined near Tempoal in the Canton of Tantoyuca. No drilling was attempted. But between 1880 and 1883 several shallow wells were drilled for oil in Mexico, two of them being near the present Potrero de Llano field west of Tuxpam. The wells were drilled by a Boston company with Canadian rigs, and are said too have reached a depth of about 400 ft., while one is reported to have flowed. Several other abortive attempts were made to drill for oil between 1885 and the beginning of the present century, about which time the Mexican, Petroleum & Liquid Fuel Co., Ltd., in which Cecil Rhodes was interested drilled 24 wells unsuccessfully, several of them as deep as 1,500 ft., in the State -

INTRODUCTION Utilization from the Point of View of the Preparation Engineer The primary interest of the coal preparation engineer is in process design, operation, and maintenance to produce an acceptable product that can be sold at the greatest possible profit. Because of emphasis upon these interests, attention to other potential values of coal is sometimes neglected. The intent of this chapter is to alert the preparation engineer to the utilization possibilities of the product as well as the tributary coal flow moving through a modern coal preparation plant. The basis for any unrealized potential derives directly from the coal seam itself. Most coal seams consist of coal bands and benches sandwiched together in layers that differ visually from each other in physical structure and luster. Randomly selected physical and chemical ranges determined from layers of coal in a single seam can easily differ by as much as 30 Hardgrove grindability indices, 0.30 of a specific gravity point, 20 percentage points of ash, 6 percentage points of dry volatile matter, and 10 percentage points of total su1fur.l Similar wide variations exist for calorific value, seam moisture content, and, undoubtedly, for any other conceivable coal test parameter that might be used for comparative purposes. These observations all point to the long-established fact that coal is not homogeneous, as conventional analytical methods might tend to indicate, but is instead a highly heterogeneous substance.

H. H. Kellogg—There is one point that the author has failed to emphasize sufficiently in his paper. What is commonly called the equilibrium contact-angle (the author's "maximum contact-angle") can have only one value on a smooth, flat, homogeneous surface under a given set of conditions. The equilibrium contact-angle is defined, for such a system, as the angle between the solid-liquid and liquid-gas interfaces, measured through the liquid. The value of the equilibrium contact-angle is uniquely determined by the value of the interfacial energies of the three intersecting interfaces and is independent of other forces in the system. When the liquid-gas interface intersects the solid at an edge—as was the case for all the experiments reported in this paper—the orientation of the solid-liquid interface is indeterminate or varies through 90" for a right-angle edge. Mr. Morris has called the angle between the horizontal and the liquid-gas interface for this edge condition a "static contact-angle." I feel that this term is unnecessarily misleading. In the first place, "static contact-angle" sounds too much like "equilibrium contact-angle." In the second place, the magnitude of the "static contact-angle," which I would prefer to call the "supporting angle," is determined by the forces in the system other than those derived from the interfacial energies, hence "contact angle" is misleading. If Mr. Morris had said that the "supporting-angle" is variable and depends on the weight of the particle and size of the bubble and that it has a maximum possible value equal to the equilibrium contact-angle, his discussion would have been more accurate. T. M. Morris (author's reply)—Mr. Kellogg puts forth a reasonable criticism of some of the terminology used in the paper. I agree that the term "static contact angle" may be misleading. Substitution of the term "supporting angle" or "vector angle" may be more suitable. F. X. Tartaron—In this paper the author presents a very interesting mathematical development of the forces present when a mineral particle adheres to an air bubble. Excellent concordance is obtained between mathematical formulation and experimental results. It is the writer's understanding that when the mineral surface presented to an air bubble is greater than the area of contact, the maximum contact angle is obtained. However, this contact angle represents distortion of the bubble, the normal shape of which is spherical or in cross-section, circular. This distortion produces a force that acts in opposition to the force of adhesion between the bubble and particle. Hence, at maximum contact angle, the force of adhesion between bubble and particle is at a minimum for static conditions. However, when the size of bubble is increased, the size of particle remaining the same (and all other conditions remaining the same), the contact angle decreases, the distortion of the bubble decreases and the force in opposition to adherence of bubble and particle also decreases. Thus, there is stronger attachment between bubble and particle. When this situation is applied to actual flotation conditions, it is doubtful that it has any significance. The reason is that the bubbles are normally so much larger than the particles, that in substantially all cases, it is probable that negligible distortion of the bubble takes place. In table IV, the author makes computations for bubbles from 0.50 to 2 mm diam. This is from 0.02 in. to 0.08 in. Certainly the bubbles generated in a flotation machine are far larger than this. The surfaces of the author's bubbles range from 0.79 to 12.6 sq mm. The area of contact of the glass rod (0.15 mm diam) is 0.017 sq mm. Thus, ratio of bubble surface to mineral area of contact ranges from 47 to 741 in round numbers. If we take a %-in. diam bubble and a 65-mesh (0.208 mm) particle of cubical shape, the ratio of bubble surface to mineral area of contact is 2931. Mineral particles do not readily become attached to air bubbles. Taggart has shown that in pneumatic flotation machines collector-coated particles are only temporarily attached to bubbles. They keep falling off and down in the froth but at a delayed rate as compared with gangue. Spedden and Hannan's motion pictures confirm the difficulty of attaching particles to air bubbles.
