"Experiments in conjunction with finite element analysis (FEA) are used to better predict crack propagation in ductile/brittle graded composites. Cu/W graded composites were fabricated by stacking discrete layers of powders and hot pressing. Crack propagation was studied by loading a notched beam in four point bending and examining the subsequent crack deflection. The notch was placed within a particular composition of material, oriented in a direction perpendicular to the gradient direction. Elastic and plastic mismatch between different constituents in the graded composite induce shifts in the phase angle of loading, thereby causing the crack to deflect. FEA indicates that thermal residual stress has a negligible ""influence on the crack path. The combined FEA and experimental results suggest that elastic mismatch is the single most important material property-related factor in controlling crack deflection.IntroductionMany 'applications would benefit or may even require materials whose performance or functionality must vary spatially. While the concept of functionally graded materials has existed for nearly one hundred years, it is only within the last fifteen years, that research efforts have focused on generic issues in processing, properties and performance of functionally graded materials. This generic research effort has brought together scientists and engineers from traditionally different disciplines to address common issues with graded composites. The current work focuses on issues in structural joining. A wide variety of applications require some type of joining between dissimilar materials. Examples include thermal barrier coatings for turbine engines, wear resistant coatings for tools, ceramic engine parts, and microeiectronic devices, as well as many traditional applications involving metallic welding. The joints may either be discrete, involving a single interface, or they may· be spatially graded in composition. Extensive theoretical and experimental information exists on discrete bimaterial and trimaterial joints, but relatively little exists for graded joints or composites"

Iron(II), sulphur dioxide and sugars such as lactose are potential reducing agents for manganese dioxide to produce manganese(II) for subsequent hydrometallurgical treatment. The leaching of limonitic laterite and manganiferrous ores with sulphur dioxide produces iron(II) which in turn can catalyse the leaching of manganese dioxide in acid media. This paper presents a critical analysis of the kinetics of reductive dissolution of synthetic manganese dioxide and manganese ore to compare and contrast the effect of sulphur dioxide and iron(II) in acid media containing sulphate or perchlorate anions. Both one-electron and two-electron mechanisms are considered in the case of sulphur dioxide. The current knowledge on chemical speciation is used to construct an Eh-pH diagram to show the effect of complexation of Mn(II), Fe(II) and Fe(III) with sulphate. Heterogeneous and electrochemical reaction kinetic models are combined to propose reaction mechanisms which rationalize the dissolution kinetics.

Extracting alumina from coal fly ash (CFA) is of great interest for both environmental protection and recycling valuable alumina content. In this study, ultrasonic aided leaching process as an effective method was investigated to enhance extracting Al2O3 from CFA via concentrated sulfuric acid sintering. The influence of ultrasonic power and processing time were tested under the conditions as the same as those without ultrasound. It is found that the alumina extraction rate can reach 90.5 % with ultrasound assistance, while the ultrasonic treatment can reduce almost 15 ~ 30 min in leaching time and 5 ~ 10 oC in leaching temperature than those without ultrasonic operation at the same Al2O3 extraction rate. In addition, the ultrasonic can reduce calcium content by 6 ~ 8 % dissolved into the leaching liquid. SEM analysis also shows that the residue particle size with ultrasound is smaller than that without ultrasonic treatment.

Modern smelting systems using continuous, flash and/or oxygen smelting processes have a significant effect on the choice of sulfur dioxide control processes and system arrangements. Based on gases from an enriched air or oxygen smelting furnace and copper converters the paper reviews and analyzes alternate processes and system arrangements for recovery of sulfur dioxide. The work indicates the choice system to include a conventional sulfuric acid plant for converter gas and a liquid SO2 plant to handle the high strength smelting fur¬nace gas. The liquid SO2 plant would be used as a fly-wheel to damper the flow and SO2 concentration variations of the con-verter acid plant. Potential energy recovery alternates and product flexibility are also reviewed.

"Clays are common ingredients in pharmaceutical products both as exclplents and active substances. Clay minerals are naturally cationic exchangers and they may undergo ion exchange with basic drugs in solution. Smectites, and montmorillonite have been studied due their high cation exchange capacity as compared to other silicates. Recently a patented study reports the use of attapulgite as the encapsulating agents both for the protecting the active substance and modulating release into the body. Some clays such as kaolinite, smectites, talc, etc are also used as dermatological protectors. Sepiolite and smectites have the ability to form complexes with organic compounds with absorb ultra-violet radiation, enabling them to be used in sun screens with protection factors. The objective of this work is to characterize the attapulgite in order to study the potential use of this clay material in the human health.IntroductionSince the begimling of time, nature has served humanity as a source of various raw materials. Among these, clays such as kaolinite and ilitte are common ingredients in the tile production. Recently, special clay materials have been investigated in order to identifY new potential uses of these class of materials. Clay materials are natural raw material and have excellent properties such as low toxicity, good biocompatibility, making them a good material to be used in biological applications. Attapulgite (paligorskite) and sepiolite is so called special clays. These special clay materials are very sin1ilar and have a great potential to be used in some technological areas due their special catalytic, sorptive and colloidal-rheological properties [1-8]. Recently some works have reported the use of these special clays materials for many applications such as drug delivery, wound dressing, oil absorbent, pesticides, fertilizers [9-12]. Brazil has a significant reserve of attapulgite located in Piaui state, making the study of the potential of this mineral in special areas, very attractive. Attapulgite is classified a fibrous alluminous silicate material and shows the presence of micro pores and channels, fine particle size and high surface area making this material a good candidate alternative material to be used in many industrial applications [6,8,9,11,12]. The Zinc Corporation of South Africa Ltd. (Zincor) operates an integrated roast ? leach ? electrowinning circuit. The efficient removal and control of iron forms an integral part of the process. Zincor developed its own iron removal process (Zincor Process), which was recently shown to be unique with some similarities to the para-goethite iron removal process. Newly developed operating parameters for iron removal are in the process of being implemented. These include a change in the pH-profile and operating temperature, the recycling of seed material and the utilisation of an alternative neutralising agent to aid iron removal. Some of these actions, together with the implementation of a pre-neutralisation step, new filtration equipment and control systems in Zincor?s Residue Treatment Plant have significantly reduced zinc losses associated with iron in calcine and the iron residue produced. This enabled Zincor to take a step closer to world-class zinc recovery levels of around 96% for a similar type of operation.

Dredging is a common method of remediating ponds containing contaminated wastes. However, dewatering of the dredged solids is usually not well integrated with the dredging phase. As a result, overall project efficiency can be poor. Specifically, since dredges deliver material in a widely varying slurry form and since dewatering presses require the delivered material to be uniform, union of the two systems often results in inconsistent operation of the overall process. In an effort to enhance overall dredging and dewatering process production rates as well as minimize the return of suspended solids in the decant water, a new process was developed to provide a consistent dredged sludge for delivery to the press. This paper discusses modifications made to a conventional dredging and dewatering process to improve production rates and dewatering capabilities. These modifications are applicable to any project where efficient solids dewatering is required and where returning decant water must be visually free of suspended solids.

Bacterial oxidation of a low-grade sulfide gold ore was investigated in order to enhance leaching of gold. The experiments were carried out in columns using mixed cultures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidansisolated from the ore. Fractions with different screen analyses were oxidized in two regimes - one pass of the solution and circulating, solution. Constant temperature and flow-rate of the percolating solution were maintained during the experiments. A correlation between the concentrations of copper and iron in the solution leaving the columns and pH and Eh values was observed. The effect of bacterial activity was proved by means of thiourea and cyanide leaching of the oxidized ore.

This paper describes a process for the treatment of the dusts generated during the operation of blast and reverberatory furnaces in the lead smelter, to remove zinc, cadmium, arsenic and halides from the circuit. The process consists of a Pefloles' developed leaching/purification stage and a solvent extraction process developed by Lurgi. The plant capacity is 5,000 tonnes Zn/year. The feed to solvent extraction contains 8 g/1 Zn. Impurities such as copper, iron, arsenic and cadmium are removed by conventional cementation processes. The cadmium product is 99.99 % pure. The solvent extraction process consists of two extraction stages, one washing stage and two stripping stages. D2EHPA is used as the extraction agent and 25% ammonia as the neutralizer. The rich-zinc solution is sent to the electrolytic zinc plant for zinc recovery. The raffinate produced, which is a mixture of ammonium sulfate and chloride, is used for agricultural applications.

The ultrafine, monodispersed, spherical cobalt powder has been fabricated by reducing cobalt hydroxide with glycol. It were investigated that the effect of NaOH concentration on the reaction rate and the effects of the concentration of cobalt hydroxide and surfactant on the morphology and particle size. The particles were characterized by the X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscope(SEM), laser diffraction particle size analyzer and BET specific surface analyzer respectively. The XRD shows that the cobalt powders exist mostly in face centered cubic (fcc) structure, a little in simple hexagonal. The cobalt powders prepared at Co(OH)2150g/L, NaOH 40 g/L and surfactant 30g/L, its average particle size, specific surface area and cobalt content, were 0.88µm, 2.705m2/g. and more than 99.5% respectively.

Ore microscopy is a useful technique to detect and study the ore minerals that are associated with sediment-hosted and volcanic-hosted deposits of finely disseminated gold and silver. Ore microscopy can be used to determine the: 1) precious metal-bearing minerals in some ores, 2) associated ore minerals that may form geochemical exploration halos, 3) character of iron sulfide grains, 4) extent of sulfide oxidation, 5) character of oxidized iron minerals, 6) character of original sulfide grains from a study of the hypogene and supergene oxidized ores, 7) relative time of oxidation, 8) character of organic matter, 9) minerals that may consume excessive amounts of cyanide solution, 10) extent of silicification and silica encapsulation, and 11) possibility of salting.

The gold catalyst supported on iron oxide was prepared from gold dissolved in aqua regia by a deposition-precipitation method and applied to CO oxidation in the absence and presence of hydrogen. Some characterization methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), temperature programmed oxidation (TPO), and the pulsed CO chemisorption with temperature programmed desorption (TPD) were conducted to explain different catalytic activities of Au/Fe2O3 catalyst pretreated at different conditions. The particle size of gold was about 10 nm for Au/Fe2O3 calcined in air at 373 and 573 K. For complete CO oxidation, the decreasing CO conversion with a reaction time was observed at low temperatures but its initial catalytic activity can be restored by a heat treatment at high temperatures. This catalyst was quite active for the selective CO oxidation in the presence of hydrogen especially at low temperatures. In the presence of hydrogen, the deactivation was significantly diminished.

"By the year 2000, the steel industry, not only in the United States but in the rest of the world, will undergo significant changes. On the other hand, there will be a number of areas in which change will be minimal.The current capacity of the industry worldwide is approximately 800-810 million metric tons. This may grow to some extent, as Third World countries install capacity. However, much of it will be neutralized as the industrialized countries shrink their current capacities.There will be several breakthroughs in terms of technology, some of which deal with the production of iron outside of the blast furnace. However, these processes will not be far enough advanced by that time to replace the blast furnace, rather they will supplement it.In terms of steelmaking and the subsequent rolling process, there should be a number of basic improvements. The strip mills will roll sheets with a very slight variance in gauge, which will give the customers a better product for automatic stamping machines. Ordinary carbon steel, in a number of instances, will be replaced by high-strength, low-alloy steel, which will reduce the tonnage necessary for present-day applications, such as construction.The corporate organization will be significantly changed as joint ventures and mergers will reduce the number of companies, as well as facilities in operation. This will enable the industry to reduce its capital investment and improve operating costs, so that it will be able more effectively to compete with other materials, such as plastics, cement, aluminum, etc."

A real-time dynamic simulation model has been developed to characterise the flash furnace operation at the Chagres smelter. This model permits the operators to plan the process to meet the Peirce Smith converters' schedules and feed the acid plant with gases that satisfy its best operating efficiency range. Essential control parameters for the furnace (process air enrichment, oxygen coefficient and supplementary heat) are calculated to satisfy process targets such as matte grade, slag silica and matte/slag temperatures. These calculations are carried out with a real-time simulation. Flash furnace control and operational stability permits setting up control strategies that streamline the flow of copper to converters and of sulphur to the acid plant.

An experimental study on the oxidation of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), pyrite (FeS2), covellite (CuS) and chalcocite (Cu2S) particles was conducted by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. Oxygen concentration in the process gas was set to 40 and 70% by vol. and a heating rate of 40 °C/min was used. Response variables included: the temperature of incipient reaction, the total exothermic heat of reaction, particle mass, morphology, and mineralogy of the reacted particles. Based on the experimental data and phase stability calculations, reaction mechanisms were proposed to represent the behavior of the particles during oxidation. The reaction mechanisms were verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of the oxidized particles, and by thermochemical and mass balance calculations to reproduce the DSC and TGA thermograms. Overall kinetic models were developed to represent the evolution of the exothermic heat of reaction for each mineral as a function of time. Experiments conducted with copper concentrate particles containing the minerals studied suggest that the reaction mechanisms for the individual minerals can be used to represent the oxidation behavior of the copper concentrate particles.

"The columnar-equiaxed transition (CET) has been studied numerically under unsteady-state conditions using mathematical models that: (i) include a non-equilibrium undercooling at the columnar front;and(ii) describe the simultaneous evolution of the columnar and equiaxed zones.The results are discussed and compared with those produced by a steady-state analysis.IntroductionThe majority of the previous work on the columnar-equiaxed transition (CET) has concentrated on the production of equiaxed nuclei, regarding this as being the critical step in the formation of an equiaxed zone. Recently, the growth of equiaxed grains has been considered and this is not unreasonable because, for an equiaxed zone to be present, the grains must grow as well as nucleate. Since the growth rate of the grains will be determined by the thermal environment at and ahead of the columnar tips, it was decided to model the liberation and flow of heat during solidification to discover whether the various trends in the columnar range might be explained by their effect on the temperature profile throughout the casting. The models presented here for the solidification of a casting are the first to include the latent heat liberated ahead of the columnar front. Burden and Hunt (1) consider its effect only qualitatively, and although Lipton et al (2) adopt a criterion for the CET which is based on the thermal interaction of the columnar and equiaxed grains, they do not actually include the latent heat in their calculations.It can be argued that the latent heat liberated by the equiaxed grains in the bulk will retard the columnar dendrites in a casting: once the equiaxed grains are sufficiently well-established, the latent heat that they evolve could slow down the columnar growth to such an extent that the equi axed would dominate. Alternatively, the latent heat produced by the equiaxed grains might suppress further equiaxed solidification by raising the bulk temperature. The nature of the thermal interaction between columnar and equiaxed growth is not obvious, and because it is dependent on the material parameters and the dimensions of the system, it cannot be considered effectively in a qualitative way but has to be studied quantitatively: hence the need for the mathematical models discussed in the following pages. The results of the models are discussed in the light of a steady state analysis."

Through-hole copper plating is performed to make a multi-layer printed circuit board. The through hole plating is first carried out by Pd catalyst treatment, followed by copper non-electric plating. The amount of Pd catalyst used in one plant is about 0.25-2 m3/month (8 g/dm3 PdCl2 base) depending on the plant scale, and the cost of the catalyst reaches 17,000¬I35,000 US$/month. In this study, the flow and material balance of a Pd in Pd catalyst treatment process was investigated. About 60% of Pd catalyst adheres on the through-hole and other part of setup, while 25% is released into the washing liquor. Pd in the washing liquor should be collected by a suitable method like a pressure filtration using diatomite. The material balance of Pd in Pd catalyst treatment process and the recovery method of Pd from waste solution containing Pd catalyst was investigated.

"The Levitation Casting Process is a new continuous casting method that uses an electromagnetic levitation field, instead of a mold, to support and contain a column of solidifying metal. By counteracting gravitational forces and hydrostatic pressure on the metal column, this process eliminates friction and adhesion at the interface between the solidifying metal and the cooled walls of the casting chamber. The process inherently provides high casting speeds, excellent dimensional control and smooth, continuous emergence of solidified product from the top of the casting chamber.Of major importance is that the electromagnetic field produces an intense stirring of the liquid metal both before and during solidification. As a result of this stirring, the cast product has a homogeneous, equiaxed, fine grain structure generally suitable for immediate drawing or other forming operations without the need for hot rolling or other expensive additional processing.This paper reviews the fundamentals of the Levitation Casting Process, results obtained in casting various pure metals and alloys, and the production sized system at Lowell, MA, that uses this process. "Spent potlining is unavoidable solid waste from aluminum smelters. About thirty kilograms spent potlining is discharged in China to produce per ton primary aluminum. Spent potlining has high level soluble fluorides and cyanides so that it brings heavy pollution to environment. It is prohibited to keep a large amount of spent potlining in open air because it will lead concentrated pollution to local soil and water source due to hydrated reactions between spent potlining and rain water/moisture in air. Landfill may solve pollution of spent potlining provisionally, but it is difficult to be accepted by aluminum smelters because of its high investment, troublesome monitoring and perennial maintenance. Detoxifying of spent potlining not only can remove deleterious fluorides and cyanides in SPL, but also can make fluorides in SPL recycle and return to aluminum electrolysis cells, at the same time benign SPL solid residue can be recycled and ready for cement production.IntroductionChina became the largest primary aluminum manufacturer in 2001. In the past few years, its aluminum output increased by twentyfive percent every year and reached 12.56 million metric tons in 2007. The whole world was very surprised and focused attention upon Chinese aluminum industry. It is more and more important to keep sustainable and steady development with the rapid development of Chinese economy. Aluminum industry is an important base industry and does a great contribution to Chinese economy. But aluminum industry is high energy-consumption and heavy-pollution industry. The government has paid more attention to aluminum industry in recent years. Nowadays the bothersome problem which counterworks Chinese aluminum industry is pollution from solid wastes. Main Solid wastes from aluminum industry are red mud from alumina refineries and spent potlining (short as SPL) from aluminum smelters. Spent potlining are waste lining materials from aluminum electrolysis cells. During production of aluminum, due to reactions between melted electrolyzer and pot lining as well as penetrating of fluorides into pot lining, newly-formed compounds inlayed in pot lining, destroyed the lining structure and brought pot lining cracking. Melt rushed out of lining cracks, cells have to be stopped running and ready for heavy repair. Cell life generally varies from 1500 to 2000 days. Spent potling is an unavoidable solid waste from aluminum industry."
