It is becoming increasingly difficult to secure local aggregate resources that meet quality standards and local restrictions without conflicts with other land uses and environmental regulations. The successful integration of natural-resource information into land-use decisions is becoming increasingly important as the needs for both land and resources become more numerous, complex and urgent. Well-reasoned decisions about land-use are crucial to the Nation if infrastructure resources are to remain economically available. Provisions for uninterrupted future supplies of aggregate should be made using proper long-range planning that incorporate a multiple land-use program. That program would include identification and protection of natural resources, strategies that will permit development of resources according to future market needs and environmental considerations, and the beneficial reclamation of mined-out areas.

International Minerals & Chemical Corp.'s New Wales operation near Mulberry, FL, is reportedly the world's largest concentrated phosphate chemical fertilizer and phosphate-based animal feed ingredients complex. Its latest expansion represents a $191-million investment. Two Northwest draglines were put to work at the operation early last year and, according to a company spokesman, total production from the units have more than doubled that from older rigs. This article describes how the draglines are used and provides details on the New Wales operation. The principle product at New Wales is phosphoric acid, produced by reacting ground phosphate rock with sulfuric acid in large concrete attack tanks. For each ton of phosphoric acid produced, New Wales must dispose of about 4.5 t (5 st) of waste gypsum. New Wales stores the gypsum on-site, and uses durable Northwest draglines to help handle the material. Two Units Maintain the Gypsum Stack After the gypsum is separated from the phosphoric acid through 23-m-diam (75-ft-diam) vacuum filters, it is mixed with water from a 121-hm2 (300-acre) recirculating cooling pond and, in slurry form, is pumped to the top of a 121-hm2 (300-acre) gypsum stack located adjacent to the cooling pond. The slurry contains mostly gypsum (CaSO4), with small traces of silica and other elements. The water at this point is corrosive, containing from 1-2% phosphoric acid. Its pH usually ranges from 1.5-2.0. Water drains from the gypsum stack into the cooling pond. Only about 15% of the pond's water, however, comes from the gypsum stack; the balance is from various sources throughout the complex and is held in the pond to cool before being returned for reuse in the plant. About 97% of New Wales' water needs come from this recycling program. The gypsum remains on the stack, inert, ready for future processing if it becomes economically feasible. Throughout the handling process, Northwest draglines work around the stacks' rim, continually directing the waste flow and digging out dried solids to heighten the perimeter dike to provide more storage volume. When wet, gypsum is extremely soft. When dry, it compacts well and provides footing with enough bearing capacity to support the machines. Processing at New Wales started in 1975 and the gypsum storage area has already been built up 12 m (40 ft) above grade. A total of 14.8 km3 (12,000 acre-ft) of solids are now stored. Using K-oleate as a collector and alizarin red S (ARS) as a modifying agent, selective depression of dolomite from francolite was achieved in alkaline medium (pH> 9.0). Interestingly. ARS was also found to depress igneous apatite in alkaline medium in oleate flotation of apatite and calcite. Adsorption of ARS alone on dolomite was found to be higher than that on francolite. Complimentary adsorption experiments of ARS and K-oleate showed that oleate adsorption was increased in the presence of ARS on francolite but not on dolomite. K-oleate adsorbs on both francolite and dolomite and causes precipitation of calcium and magnesium oleate. Such precipitates can be pre-vented when ARS is present. The results are explained in terms of competitive adsorption for the active sites on francolite and dolomite by oleate and ARS, and their interactions with dis-solved mineral species in solution.

"In most copper mines and concentrators, mill water is continuously recovered and reused, with fresh water added to make up for losses. When mixed, these water chemistries can lead to severe scaling, especially in pipes, tanks and pumps on the mill water supply side, reducing flows and causing significant production losses.At KGHM Robinson Nevada Mining Company, increases in the fresh water addition ratios resulted in severe scaling problems and premature pump failures thereby jeopardizing plant production. What initially appeared to be a few isolated scaling events eventually unfolded into a recurring pattern of water supply-related production losses with increasing severity. Through completion of detailed root cause analysis, chemistry modeling, laboratory work, in-plant testing and system engineering, the mechanisms of scaling were identified and addressed.Advancements in fresh water addition practices and antiscalant application methods resulted in a stepwise reduction of the mill water scaling. Cost savings and production benefits were significant to the plant’s financial metrics.IntroductionThe production of mineral and metal concentrates using the flotation process requires large quantities of water. Flotation is utilized as the primary means for beneficiation with sulfide ores. Mined ores are crushed and ground into a slurry of 20-55% solids. For each ton of ore, 400-900 gallons of water1 are needed to supply the grinding mill. Additional water is needed in the flotation circuit as well. With many modern mills operating at2 11,000-165,000 tons/day, water supply volumes can be upwards of 3,000 gpm to 100,000 gpm of flow.For plants operating at or above capacity, disruptions and restrictions in water supply flow can have a direct impact on the production and recovery of the metal. Water supply flow can be limited for a wide variety of reasons but of interest are those limitations that are due to mineral scaling. Mineral scaling is the selective point precipitation of inorganic species above saturation concentrations. Precipitated species form flow-restricting deposits in the mill water system (tanks, pumps, pipe and valves), that will eventually impact water supply to the concentrator."

This paper will address the feasibility of using low-density cellular concrete (LDCC) for an annular fill application where project conditions required pumping the LDCC material for distances of up to 16,000 feet. These conditions occurred during construction of the Kaneohe-Kailua Sewer Tunnel in Oahu, Hawaii, between 2014 and 2018. Located on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, this 13-foot-diameter rock tunnel extends for approximately three miles from the Kaneohe Pre-Treatment Facility to the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. The tunnel was built to convey wastewater and provide temporary storage for peak wet weather flows entering the collection system, thereby reducing the potential for uncontrolled discharges. LDCC was chosen for this project partly due to its environmental benefits, which were essential for an application contiguous to the inland marine and coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean. In order to ensure optimal performance characteristics—compressive strength (with a requirement of 300 psi at 56 days), flowability, and light weight—were achieved, extensive testing of various LDCC products and mix designs was completed. The testing measured the initial set time of the LDCC as well as the compressive strength needed to reduce the quantity of grout lifts required for the project.

This study examines the isothermal and non-isothermal reduction behaviors of iron ore compacts in a pure hydrogen atmosphere and compares the results obtained during the reduction process by CO. The different phases accompanying the reduction reactions were identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and its morphology was microscopically examined. In isothermal experiments, temperature plays a significant role in the reduction process. At any given temperature, the reduction rate during the initial stages is higher than that during the final stages. The reduction rate in H2 atmosphere was faster than in CO gas. The comparison of activation energy values suggested that reduction with H2 is more efficient thanwith CO. At the same temperature, the time required to achieve a certain degree of reduction was lower when using H2 gas than CO atmosphere. In non-isothermal tests, the heating rate has a significant effect on the reduction rate and reduction extent. At the same heating rate, the degree of reduction was higher in H2 atmosphere than in CO gas. Based on experimental data, the parameters of reaction kinetics were deduced by application of model-free and model-fitting methods. The reduction in H2 atmosphere was controlled by nucleation model (Avrami-Erofeev model), while the CO reduction reaction was controlled by gas diffusion.

Zimbabwe The Republic of Zimbabwe is situated in south central Africa and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The country is land-locked, bounded on the north by Zambia, on the south by the Republic of South Africa, on the east by Mozambique and on the southwest by Botswana. Nearly 400,000 sq km in area, Zimbabwe is bigger than both France and Spain and nearly three times the size of England. The outstanding physical feature is the central plateau, known as the highveld, which is about 650 km long and 80 km wide at an elevation of +1,200 m, and on which the Jena Mines is located. Because of its elevation and inland position, Zimbabwe's climate is temperate, generally drier and cooler than is normally expected in the tropics. Zimbabwe's population is in excess of 10 million. English is the official language, with Ndebele and Shona being the main ethnic languages. About one million people live in Greater Harare, the capital city. The basic unit of currency is the Zimbabwe dollar, which has depreciated substantially over the past few years. Currently (November, 1995), the exchange rate is $US 1.00 = $Zim 9.00, compared with $US 1 .OO = $Zim 2.50 in 1991. Project Area The Jena Mines Complex is situated in central Zimbabwe (Figure 1), in the Silobela area of the lower Gweru River valley. The mine site is 270 km from Harare by paved and gravel road. The Jena Mines property consists of a single rectangular (8 km by 5 km) shaped mining lease with an area of approximately 40 sq km (Figure 2). Annual average precipitation is 720 mm falling in the summer months between October and April. Mean daily maximum temperature is 24°C in October and mean minimum is 14°C in July. The southern parts of Zimbabwe have experienced drought conditions over the past four years which has affected water and power supplies. The countryside in the Jena area is generally low relief with a gentle slope to the northwest. The mine site topography is flat with an average elevation of 1,210 m. Zimbabwe Mining Industry Zimbabwe has a long mining tradition, particularly for gold. In the 1,200 years preceding European colonization, it is estimated that about 4,000 ancient mines produced between 600 and 800 tonnes of gold. Since the turn of the century more than 1,700 tonnes of gold have been produced. An excellent infrastructure has developed to support the mining industry. This includes a well- maintained system of paved roads, railway links to major mining areas, an electricity grid covering most of the country, and numerous industries manufacturing a wide range of mining supplies. Jena History The claims in the Jena Mines area are among the earliest registered in Zimbabwe. The gold potential was easily recognized because of extensive ancient (pre-European) workings. European trading beads from the 14th Century have been recovered from anthills in the mine area. Development of the Jena Mines commenced in 1898 and several mines have operated intermittently over the past 90 years. Commercial development of the mineral resources of southwestern Missouri began about 1850 and spread into southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, forming the Tri-State Mining District with Joplin as the urban center (fig. 1). The value of the Tri-State mineral production from 1850 to 1950 exceeded one billion dollars, and until 1945 the region was the world's leading producer of lead and zinc concentrates, accounting for one-half of the zinc and one-tenth of the lead produced in the United States (Gibson, 1972 1). By 1950 most of the rich ores had been extracted, and mining and milling operations declined during the 1950's and ceased in the 1960's. The sulfide minerals, mainly galena and sphalorite, were mined from cherty limestones at depths of 25 to 75 m (meters). Crude ores were brought from the mines to the surface where they were milled into lead and zinc concentrates. , Barren rock was discarded in piles while the ore-bearing rock was crushed and ground into fine gravel. The minerals were separated from the rock by a jigging process and the tailings were skimmed off and discarded in large piles. Ground-water flooding of the mines was controlled by constant pumping. When pumpage declined in the 1950's and 1960's tile abandoned mine drifts and shafts filled with water. At present (1977) numerous tailings piles and flooded mines remain as visible evidence of the mining era and as a threat to the quality of ground and surface waters of the area. In 1976 the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Ozark Gateway Council of Governments made a study of the effects of the mines and tailings piles on water quality in the Missouri part of the Tri-State District. The study area covers approximately the southwestern quarter of Jasper County, an area of about 725 km2 (square kilometers), and is bounded by long 94 o 15' w.' and the Missouri-Kansas state line, and lat 37 o 15 N., and the Jasper-Newton County line.

"Fostering positive community relations is a principal tenet of sustainable development, but conflict can test even the strongest of relationships. While conflict surrounding resource development projects has the potential to be destructive, it may actually pose opportunities for partnership and collaboration when managed effectively. It is therefore not only important for mineral resource professionals to recognize the financial and social costs associated with legal disputes among project stakeholders, but also for them to prioritize resolving social conflict using alternative channels that allow for win-win outcomes. A variety of dispute prevention and resolution techniques do exist, but successful practice is not yet the norm. Here we review the sources and consequences of social conflict in the context of mining projects, and discuss typical and alternative approaches to conflict management in light of their respective benefits and drawbacks. We also suggest implementation of conflict resolution lessons into resource-related university curricula as a critical step in the continued shift of the mining industry towards sustainable development. INTRODUCTION Social conflict is a recurring phenomenon in the human experience and serves as a critical mechanism for change [1-5]. It occurs when two or more parties perceive that their needs and interests are in direct competition with each other and believe they cannot be reasonably accommodated. Conflict over mineral resource activities, particularly the distribution of benefit and risk, has become an omnipresent issue throughout the world [6-7]. Contrary to common perception, however, conflict can be a positive, transformative encounter in some instances [2, 8-11]. For this to be possible, society and its acting agents must reconsider how to address conflict. What if conflict were only a challenge to try something different? It is well-understood that the mineral industries must manage an increasingly significant volume of social conflict [12-13], which can be a costly externality impacting all of whom are involved. Conflict is commonly considered in a two-party sense, but this can deeply over-simplify the true number of stakeholders. Besides mining companies and community members, government policymakers and regulators, public interest groups, and judicial systems, to name a few, bear the social expenses of poorly-managed conflict [4, 6, 12, 14-22]. It is desirable for interested parties to participate actively in a constructive way to pursue their needs rather than contributing to adversarial relationships, operational problems, and legal costs [1, 4, 12]. Some mining companies are of course already working to develop more productive relationships with their stakeholders, but there is undoubtedly still a gap between ideal and common practices. This gap can inhibit collaboration and threaten the potential for mutually-beneficial resolutions to complex social issues [12]."

"Organic smoothing additives are used to produce dense, thick, high-quality cathodes in copper electrowinning. Glue had been used traditionally and is still used in operations that do not employ solvent extraction to produce the electrowinning electrolyte. With the advent of solvent extraction–electrowinning, guar started to be used and remained in use for many years as it does not affect the phase disengagement in solvent extraction. Recently, however, guar has been replaced by less-expensive saccharide- and polyacrylamide-based additives. This paper is the first of a series of four papers that examine saccharides and polyacrylamides as new additives for copper electrowinning. A review of previous research related to copper electrowinning additives is presented here, along with a selected review of additives in other copper electrodeposition systems.IntroductionThe recovery of copper from solution by electrowinning was first practiced in the early 1900s, but it was the combination of solvent extraction with electrowinning (SX-EW) in March 1968 at the Ranchers Bluebird Mine (Kordosky, 1992) that changed the landscape for the electrowinning process. Most copper electrowinning capacity is now associated with solvent extraction, though some copper is still won directly from leach solutions (Robinson et al., 2013). The ability to produce high-purity copper cathodes from SX-EW has taken the continued improvement of SX-EW technology over the past more than 40 years.One of the technologies that has seen improvement is that of the organic smoothing agents used during the electrodeposition of copper in the tankhouse. These organic additives are added to the acidic copper sulfate electrolyte during electrowinning to improve the smoothness, brightness and density of the copper cathodes. The organic additives that are presently in use are different from those used in 1999 (Jenkins et al., 1999). Over the past decade, many tankhouses have replaced the use of guar-based organic additives with those derived from other saccharides. Until now, there has been no comprehensive publication in the open literature on the behavior of these additives during copper electrowinning."

Japan was a closed society until 1853 when it was forced to open to the West. Mining, metallurgical, and geological education started there around 1861 when a graduate from Yale University in USA went to Japan to organize the first School of Mines. This was followed by other metallurgists from Great Britain, France, and Germany and thousands from other disciplines. The present report is a summary of the writer's first contact with Japanese metallurgists and his visits to a number of universities and research institutions in the past years.

Conventional tailings slurry contains a significant amount of water, and water management is key to ensuring the stability of a tailings storage facility (TSF). Simply reducing the water content in the slurry before discharging it from the mill could be an effective way to improve TSF water management. This study investigated the potential for using an environmentally friendly polymer as a new drag reduction agent (DRA) to reduce frictional pressure loss and also conserve water. It entailed conducting pipe loop tests to assess the polymer’s effect on pressure loss in tailings flow and then applying the test results to validate a numerical model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The model was also used to determine the polymer’s optimal concentrations at given solid concentrations and flow rates, its effect on energy efficiency for tailings transportation, and its potential for saving water. A case study for a mid-sized, hard-rock mine with a throughput of 50,000 t/day found that the solid concentration could be increased from 30 to 45% with no pressure loss by applying 1996 m3 of the polymer per day. Adding the polymer also resulted in water savings of 57,552 m3/day. The results of this study demonstrated the potential for using the new DRA not only to improve TSF stability but also to save water.

The use of fillers and reinforcements for plastics has increased considerably over the past few decades. For example, in the 1980's the average growth rate of filler use was 5.8%. [Katz and Milewski, 1987] Similar filler use growth rates occurred in the 1970's due largely to the increase in price of petrochemical starting materials for plastics. While filler use is still sometimes predicated on the cost benefits associated with their addition to the plastic, other mechanical and performance advantages associated with filler addition are being realized, and account for most of the increased usage. Plastic filler types are many and varied, and include both inorganic minerals/metals and organic compounds, with the former type being, by far, the more common. Common mineral fillers include oxides, including both natural and synthetic silica; carbonates, particularly calcium carbonate; clays such as kaolin; and silicates like mica and talc. It has been recognized that a number of factors influence filler performance, including particle size, shape, surface area, and hardness to name a few. In addition, the interaction between the filler and the plastic is of paramount importance as this interaction will determine the wettability, bonding and the adhesion between the two materials, and ultimately, the mechanical properties of the composite. Froth flotation has long been recognized as a viable process to separate different mineral types. [Leja, 1982] Prior to flotation the minerals are liberated from the ore by comminution. The mineral particle size range produced by this comminution process is typically between 300 and 10 microns. This size range is also typical of mineral fillers for plastics. The size similarity between mineral fillers and minerals concentrated by froth flotation is only one of many similarities that can be found.

Strip mining of coal, and to a lesser extent limestone, gravel and other mineral deposits in the Appalachian region of the eastern United States has left many large and small areas of devastated land where mining predated reclamation requirements. In Pennsylvania alone, there are between 250,000 and 370,000 acres of strip-mined land 1,2/. A higher percentage, and a greater total acreage of land in Pennsylvania is in need of some form of reclamation than any other state, with the neighboring states of Ohio and Nest Virginia also having nearly the same magnitude of mining.2/ Recent legislation governing strip mining of coal proposed royalties to cover reclamation of such presently unusable land. However, in Pennsylvania and other states some progress has already been realized by utilizing abandoned strip mines and gravel pits for waste disposal sites. Given acceptable hydrogeologic settings, such use of these mined areas for landfilling has provided the incentive for ultimately restoring unreclaimed land to beneficial use, at no cost to the general public.

This paper proposes a hydromechanically coupled numerical modeling approach to quantify the influence of various parameters on the mechanical and hydraulic performance of protective water barrier pillars (PWBP). The results are validated for two case studies having pillar widths of 16 and 42 m at cover depths of 136 and 190 m and water heads of 25 and 141 m. The outcome can be significantly helpful in the rational design of these pillars in underground coal mines.

Rock surrounding mine openings frequently is an impermeable type such as shale or granite. Most rock, however, has joints, bedding planes, cleavage planes, or other potential discontinuities. Permeability to fluids (gas or liquid) may exist via natural joints or fractures in an otherwise impermeable rock. In the mining situation, tectonic and induced tensile and shear stresses may be great enough to cause joints to open or fractures to develop in previously solid rock. The rock, as a result, becomes less self-supporting and may - require artificial support such as rock bolts or timber. Simultaneously, as fractures develop, permeable paths may be created. If fluid can be injected into a previously solid and impermeable rock mass, a logical conclusion is that a fracture (crack) flow path must be transmitting that fluid. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Laramie (Wyo) Energy Research Center has been evaluating results of in-situ oil shale fracturing (hydraulic or explosive) and retorting experiments by. a fluid (air) injection , and borehole air flow profile logging technique since 1956 (1, 14, 15). In the oil shale case, it is imperative to know the location and flow capacity (permeability) of natural fractures, if they exist, and induced fractures that inter-connect vertical wellbores at depths of fifty to several hundred feet. By injecting air into one wellbore in a system of several wells and measuring input volume and pressure while simultaneously measuring the output of other wellbores, the minimum areal extent of interconnecting permeable fractures can be determined. Exact locations (depths) of fractures and individual fracture flow capacities between wellbores can be determined by air flow profile logging (14, 15). Knowledge of fracture locations and permeability is essential to rational experimental in-situ retorting design.

Surveying is to tunneling, as a steering wheel is to a car—somewhat essential if you want to end up in the right place. The principles of tunnel surveying have remained unchanged since the first tunnels were constructed: To mathematically connect the selected start and end points of a tunnel and physically translate that alignment onto the ground. The alternative is just dead-reckoning and leaves the probably less than satisfying end results to chance. Today’s laser-guided tunnels often have to thread the needle through a maze of soil types, utilities, structural features and other underground considerations. Surveying makes it possible.

The Basalt Waste Isolation Project of the U.S. Department of Energy is a part of the National Was re Terminal Storage Program. Its mission is to assess the feasibility of siting a nuclear waste repository in the basalt formations which underlie the Hanford Site of the U.S. Department of Energy. The progress in all program areas is summarized in this paper. Activities conducted to date have led to the identification of possible repository candidate sites within the Hanford Site.

The hydrometallurgical residue generated during the hydrometallurgical processing of waste automotive catalysts is valuable as a secondary resource. In this study, a process of platinum recovery from the hydrometallurgical residue by high-temperature smelting process was proposed. Results of lab- and pilot-scale experiments show a high recovery of more than 98% of platinum and glass slag was successfully obtained by controlling the Fe3O4 addition, C/Fe3O4 mass ratio, CaO/SiO2 mass ratio, smelting temperature, and holding time at 15 wt%, 0.4, 0.6, 1500 °C, and 120 or 60 min, respectively. Results from the pilot-scale show that the platinum contents in the glass slag and alloys were less than 4 g/t and more than 0.6 wt%, respectively. Therefore, the process proposed in this study is a prospective and effective approach for reutilization of hydrometallurgical residue containing platinum.
