(Fellow) The influence of energy-recovery systems on the rise in temperature of water going down mines is examined. It is concluded that the, cost benefit of such systems, deriving partially from the reduced temperature rise in situations where cold water IS sent underground from surface, would more than justify the installation cost.

The use of pebbles as the medium in the grinding of quartz gravel in a laboratory mil provided experimental data that were used to quantify the relationships between the feed rate of ore to the mil, the fineness of grind of the product, and the wear rate and consumption of the grinding medium. Fineness of grind is expressed as the inverse of the harmonic mean size, a quantity that is calculated from data obtained by sieve analyses. The commonly used criterion for fineness of grind (the percentage of material smaller than 75 µm in the mil product) is shown to corelate approximately linearly with the inverse of the harmonic mean size. An increase in the feed rate was found to cause the harmonic mean size of the product to increase linearly, Le. the relationship previously found for metalic grinding media is applicable to al grinding media, irespective of shape or composition. Simple expressions for the consumption and wear rate of pebbles are derived from the experimental data, and are shown to be functions of the feed rate. The expression for wear rate is a monotonicaly increasing function, while that for consumption is a hyperbolicaly decreasing function of the feed rate. In contrast, a linear relationship was found between the rate of wear of the grinding medium and the rate production of fines. The expressions that were previously developed in relation to the use of metalic grinding media are shown to be equally applicable to pebble milling.

INTRODUCTION The Miller chlorination process has assumed a preeminent position in the refining of gold bullion, a position it has maintained for over half a century. In the early sixties considerable interest was aroused by the idea of producing a consistently high grade bullion at the mine smelthouses themselves. However, as the use of chlorine in industrial plants is associated with considerable hazards, oxygen was considered a natural alternative, apart from bing less expensive than chlorine. Partial refining at the mine smelthouses would considerably decrease the requirements made on Rand Refinery Limited as well as indicating the possibility of reducing final refining costs. An added factor would be the purer silver chloride obtainable, after prior removal of the base metals by oxygen injection, which would facilitate the production of high-purity silver. The free energies of formation of the oxides of the metals;- silver, copper, lead, zinc, iron and bismuth indicate that, with the exception of silver, these metals should be capable of removal as oxides by oxygen injection. Rose1 had shown that during injection of gold bullion, considerable loss of silver to the boraxsilver slag occurred and, furthermore, that copper removal was not efficient and oxide attack on the refractories was severe. Plant test work2 had confirmed the difficulty of copper removal, but had shown that zinc and lead were almost completely removed. The difficulty of copper removal by oxygen injection warranted further investigation. Also, the high decomposition pressure of silver oxide suggested that by suitable control of the slag composition it might be possible to reduce to very small proportions the silver carried into the slag as oxide. The oxidation of copper by oxygen injection and subsequent dissolution of the oxide in a slag may occur according to the following reactions; Reactions 4 and 5 were considered because of the relatively high solubility of oxygen in molten silver and silver alloys. Thermodynamic data indicate that there is little possibility of any reaction involving the formation of CuO occurring at temperatures above 1 000 °C. To ensure that the operative reactions 1 and 4 take place to the maximum extent, the following factors He significant. (a) an increase in the activity of the copper in the bullion, (b) an increase in the partial pressure of oxygen in the system, (c) an increase in the activity of the oxygen in solution in the metal, (d) a decrease in the activity of cuprous oxide in the slag. From practical considerations, the operative variable most easily susceptible to control is the composition of the slag. SOLUBILITY OF COPPER OXIDES IN BOROSILICATE SLAGS Very scanty information exists on systems containing copper oxides but the indications are that slags containing considerable amounts of boric oxide would possibly prove to be the best solvents for cuprous and cupric oxides. This is attributed to the fact that the activities of copper oxides are much lower in boric oxide slags than in slags in which silica is the main network former. The number of possible slags containing boric oxide was limited by consideration of liquidus temperature, viscosity, corrosive action on refractories, volatilization, and ultimately cost (for industrial application). Slags in the systems soda-boric oxide-silica and lime-boric oxide-silica were selected paying due attention to the above limitations. Additions of 5, 10 and 15 per cent cupric oxide were made to the finely ground, premelted slags. These mixtures were then reground and 2g quantities held in re crystallized alumina crucibles at temperatures of 1150°C and 1 250°C respectively for 30 minutes. The crucibles were removed from the furnace, rapidly cooled, cut in half longitudinally, and a thin section taken from one half was subjected to microscopic examination.

(Wits) (Visitor) After defining training and discussing the present level oftraining in the South African Mining Industry, the paper proposes the adoption of a centralized training system for the Industry and suggests several ways in which this should function. The finance required for the implementation and running of such a system should be obtained from State aid and from the institution of a levy and grant system for the whole Industry.

This paper reviews the theoretical methods used in South Africa for the prediction of heat pick-up and air-temperature gradients along main haulages. These methods include those of Starfield, Ramsden, McPherson, and Goch and Patterson. The differences in predictions based on typical airway conditions are explained as being due to differences in the mathematical models on which the predictions are based. The largest discrepancies were found for dry airways and for airways with bulk air coolers. The errors in predictions of the effect of machines and coolers that have been running for only a few months are calculated, and the limitations of various simplified methods are discussed.

Despite their inadequacy, assumptions of isotropy and homogeneity are often applied to the analyses of in situ permeability tests. In this paper, we exam the effects of anisotropy and heterogeneity on Pressure Pulse Test (PPT) and Constant Head Injection Test (CHIT) by means of numerical approaches. Some new findings that offer practical considerations in properly interpreting in-situ permeability tests are presented. Malgré leur manque de précision inhérente, les assomptions d'anisotropie et d'hétérogénéité sont souvent utilisées lors de test de perméabilité in situ. Dans cette étude, nous examinons les effets de l'anisotropie et de l'hétérogénéité sur le test par pression pulsée et le test à injection à charge hydraulique constante par le biais de la simulation numérique. Des nouveaux résultats permettant une interprétation pratique et claire des test de perméabilité in-situ sont présentés. Trotz ihrer inhärenten Ungeeignetheit werden häufig Annahmen über Isotropie und Homogenität auf Analysen von in-situ Permeabilitätstests angewendet. In diesem Papier untersuchen wir die Effekte von Anisotropie und Heterogenität auf Durck-Impuls-Test (PPT) und Konstant-Kopf-Einspritztest (CHIT) mit numerischen Ansätzen. This paper summarizes the characteristics of Southern African coals, presents a fundamental approach to the combustion performance of coal, and reviews some of the recent developments in the fields of technological evaluation and boiler design for coals typical of this region. This includes a summary of the petrographic constituents of coa~ highlighting the differences between the Palaeozoic coals of the northern and southern hemispheres (Laurasia and Gondwana respectively), and the effects of these properties on the combustion performance of coal as seen in terms of laboratory, pilot-scale, and full-scale operating conditions. Recent developments in boiler design linked to advanced characterization studies and commercial experience have led to unprecedented use, with maximum effect, of the low-grade, high-ash, high-inertinite coals typical of some parts of this region. In the light of this success, more adequate understanding and better methods of assessment of the coals typical of the Gondwana region are called for, particularly in the light of the price premium for high-grade coal and the more cost-effective lower grade coals on the international steam markets.

Mine management by objectives By A. A. HAZELL The author discusses the objective areas of mine management. Setting objectives is seen to be a conscious process which starts at the highest level of management. This enables clear objectives to be set at each lower management level. The methods of setting objectives in the areas of stope production, productivity and manager performance are set out in detail. In the area of manager performance emphasis must be placed on the practice of management. It is concluded from results obtained that "management by objectives" produces better than average perormances.

Ausmelt Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) Technology has gained widespread commercial acceptance in the lead and zinc industries, as an efficient and highly flexible pyrometallurgical reactor with accompanying excellent environmental performance. For the processing of lead and zinc bearing feed materials twenty one (21) Ausmelt furnaces are now in operation, under design or under construction. With recent increases in the value of both lead and zinc and an ever increasing focus on the sustainable use of resources, interest in the processing of secondary feed material sources as well as metal containing residues has substantially increased. Ausmelt Technology has proven to be well suited to the economic recovery of values from such sources. This has for example culminated in Ausmelt?s commitment to the Whyalla Zinc project as the owner/operator of a facility for the treatment of zinc bearing secondary feeds. This paper describes Ausmelt?s recent developments in the fields of lead and zinc processing, as well as further investigations into new processing areas, including the direct smelting of zinc concentrates. Ausmelt?s TSL Technology can now be regarded as Best Available Technology (BAT) for metal production.

Coal mining has been practised in South Africa for over one hundred years. The total production increased gradually in the early pat of the twentieth century, but over the past twenty years the rate of growth has been considerable. Although opencast mining has contributed largely to this increase in production in recent years, underground bordand- pillar operations still contribute slightly less than 50 per cent of the total production. The paper highlights problems arising from old bord-and-pillar workings, and an indication is given of how some of the problems have been addressed.

The Samarco pipeline, the longest in the world for iron ore slurry transportation, started operation in 1977 to transport concentrate from the Germano facilities, in the state of Minas Gerais, to the pelletizing plant, located 396 km away, in the state of Espirito Santo, on the south-east coast of Brazil. Designed for a nominal capacity of 12 million tons per year, the pipeline reached 15.5 million/year due to operational improvement and, in late 2005, it was resized to transport 16.5 million tons per year, with the installation of a booster station. In order to ensure the accurate performance of the system, a pipeline cleaning programme was carried out and, since it has been 29 years from the operation start-up, precise knowledge of the pipe condition would be fundamental to guarantee the success of the project. The cleaning programme demonstrated the potential of operational gains from this initiative, and its effect on the corrosion control and future measures, which should be permanently adopted to maintain the improved capacity. The intelligent pig runs provided essential data used to establish a pipeline integrity programme that allowed Samarco to develop a pipe repair plan based on the severity and significance of the features and to implement a future pipe replacement plan.

(Queensland), Ph.D., (Fellow) The special characteristics of the autogenous mill are stated, and a suitable type of model for the mill is presented. Details of the test plant and experimental techniques for obtaining the data for model development are next given. followed by a discussion of the methods developed for the computation of the model parameters, namely the appearance matrix, the abrasion and crushing breakage-rate functions, and the discharge-rate function. Examples of results obtained with the model are given, and finally there is a brief account of confirmatory work on a fullscale autogeneous mill.

Aluminium AA1200 was laser alloyed with a combination of nickel and titanium diboride using different weight ratios. Chemical reactions took place with the formation of different phases. The characterization of the alloyed surfaces was carried out by x-ray diffraction (XRD), optical and scanning electron microscopes. The alloyed surfaces are composed of the initial phase of Al-Ni dendrites and eutectics of TiB2/Al and TiB2/Ni distributed on the initial phase. Experimental results obtained showed that Al-Ni intermetallics brought about a significant increase in the hardness property of Al; however, these intermetallics are highly brittle and prone to fail by brittle fracture or stress corrosion cracking when put in service. The addition of TiB2 brought about a reduction in the formation of the seintermetallic phases. A microhardness increase of over 10 times the hardness of the substrate was achieved. A simple argument shows that it is impossible for the flight of a rod in contact with a litter bar in a rotary mill to be initiated at that point on the upside of mill rotation when all the forces acting on the rod are in equilibrium. The argument was confirmed experimentally in a study showing that the lift of litter bars is a function of their height, that the rod velocity at the point of departure has a significant radial component, and that the subsequent flight of a rod is along a parabolic trajectory as predicted by elementary mechanics. A quantitative account of the observed effects, which is based on a dynamic theory of the sliding interaction between rods and litter bars, revealed interesting properties of the motions of rods down the surfaces of litter bars when the latter are in uniform circular motion during the rotation of a mill.

Results are presented on the elution of gold cyanide and base-metal cyanide complexes from strongand weakbase resins. It is shown that thiocyanate anions, zinc cyanide anions, and thiourea in acid solution are effective eluants of strong-base resins, but that it is generally necessary for electrowinning to be incorporated in the elution cycle if fast rates of elution are to be achieved. Weakbase resins are eluted with sodium hydroxide solution, which is shown to be far simpler and far more effective than the elution of strong-base resins. The effects of parameters such as concentration of the eluant, temperature, and electrowinning efficiency on the rate of elution of the resins are examined.
