A new low-dilution fusion method which has been successfully used for accurate determination of the major oxide components of silicate rocks, is applicable to rapid, accurate determination of trace or minor eiements in mineral exploration samples. Limit of detection is in many cases less than 5 ppm. Either rapid, approximate measurement and calculation methods (suitable for geochemical exploration), or more accurate methods (applicable to orebody evaluation studies) may be used.Rapid methods are described for nickel in rocks and sulphides containing 10 ppm to >2 per cent Ni, and for gallium. The rarely-determined element gallium is an example of a constituent which may be easily investigatedby XRF using the LiB02 fusion disc, which is a permanent, easily-stored analytical sample available for later rapid or accurate analyses. The method is applicable to over 30 elements at levels encountered in mineral exploration.

ABSTRACTRock stresses can be modified by physicochemical processes.If rock pores allow the ingress of water and oxygen, but are not large enough to permit the exit of larger molecules of weathering products, anomalous rock pressures develop. Rock masses may also be subjected to osmotic pressures developed as water diffuses into pores and joints filled with saline water. Anomalous rock pressures may also develop as gels filling pores undergo syneresis and as salts crystallize from pore solutions.

The iron ore industry faces significant challenges in the control of dust to meet emissions regulations and goals, as well as ensuring sustainable operations. This paper describes some of the different techniques and innovative technologies that are being developed and implemented to improve the suppression of airborne dust, specifically through the use of high energy micromist sprays. The utilisation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling and simulation is identified and described as a key enabling technology for an improvement in dust suppression solutions both from a level of understanding the source and flow of dust emissions, and for the development of new systems that can be used in the iron ore industry. CFD modelling is shown to be effective for modelling both spray dispersion and cross-wind effects, allowing designers to develop high-efficiency dust suppression systems with a greatly improved level of confidence when compared to traditional techniques. New high energy micromist technology is also outlined as a key element in developing high-efficiency dust suppression systems. Experimental results and industry applications are presented to demonstrate the significant improvements that can be achieved in suppressing or reducing airborne dust emissions.CITATION:Roberts, J M and Wypych, P W, 2017. PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.Due to several major stope overbreak events at Toguraci, the mining method and sequence was reviewed. The method was changed from a bottom up Avoca stoping approach using waste rock as fill material and leaving sill pillars, to a top down open stope method using paste fill without sill pillars.The revised mine plan originally had stoping progressing from the current level to the base of reserves followed by extraction of the sill pillars in the upper levels at the end of mine life. Geotechnical modelling was conducted on the revised mine plan and it was recommended that the sill pillars be taken early due to the risk of them overstressing and being difficult to recover if left until the end of mine life. The backfill material above the sill pillars is unconsolidated run-of-mine development waste rock or unconsolidated rock fill (URF).Due to earlier attempts to extract sill pillars under URF not being successful in the upper areas of the mine, it was stipulated that the URF above the five remaining pillars must be consolidated prior to stoping. Cost benefit analysis showed this to be justifiable due to the high-grade nature of the ore locked up in the pillars.Grout was initially planned to be injected in one pass through self-drilling anchors (SDA) in a 2.5 m pattern. Initial attempts to do this failed due to the SDA aperture and grout consistency. A modified method was employed using poly pipe installed into open holes that were drilled through the sill pillar and into the URF from below. Repeated application at each location ensured full grout consolidation. Drill holes were used to confirm grout thickness as well as add more grout. Design thickness was based on stress analysis.Despite different URF types being present due to varying quantities of fines, the process was similar for each area. The presence of paste in the URF of one target affected the quantity of grout it received.With a design thickness of 4–5 m of consolidation in the URF, depending on stope width and dip, each consolidated pillar (to date) maintained integrity during the stope operation. It is not the primary object of this paper to treat with the scheme of prospecting in detail, but it is considered that a brief description of the broad lines is necessary so that the significance of the points to be discussed later may be appreciated.The finding of payable gold reefs on the Bendigo field resolves itself into a two-fold problem, firstly the location of quartz bodies, and secondly the location of gold shoots in such bodies. The country rock of the field has been folded and faulted, and the occurrence of known reefs is associated with the fold axes and the faulting. The "lines" of the field are the anticlinal axes, and practically all known reefs are at or near centre country. Very little work has been done on the synclines, which may have some potential value.Quartz has been introduced along the fracture systems, and gives rise to the three main types of reef met with on the field, namely, the "back," which is similar to a bedded quartz reef and is formed along a bedding plane fault; the "saddle," which forms at the crest of the anticline and has the typical shape from which it takes its name; and "spurs," which are irregular masses of quartz, making off reefs of the first two types.As the fracturing throughout the field is widespread and fairly intense, the first problem, that of finqing quartz, is comparatively simple, and any regular system of blocking out the ground will be productive of quartz bodies.*Field Superintendent, Bendigo Mines Ltd. The clay slime generatea in many sand washing operations is usually very difficult to de-water. Treatment of these slimes is often limited by economic considerations and the properties of the solids to a gravity-driven process. The moisture characteristics of kaolinitic slimes from two different sand washing operations were measured.From these curves, equilibrium moisture contents for sedimentation and for drainage were calculated using the methods of soil physics. The validity of these calculations were confirmed by column experiments.The results show that the increased de-watering to be gained by drainage, as compared with sedimentation, is significant. Furthermore, observed rates of outflow indicate that water can be removed considerably morerapidly when drainage is possible.The practical application of these results to the dewatering of clay slimes is discussed.

The material presented in this paper describes experimental work to determine the effect of variations in suction nozzle design upon inlet flow conditions. Four entrance profile shapes were examined under controlled conditions of slurry flow and it was found that the straight ended nozzles had consistently higher entrance losses than the straight taper or the ellipse, and that the circular arc profile nozzles were the most efficient. Subordinate considerations were the measurement of the quantities and the forces involved.As the work progressed, three distinct phases in the pattern of flow were apparent and the static pressures in each were carefully examined. An inlet zone was found to be unstable in changing boundary conditions, a transition zone was largely independent of slurry density and in a zone of stability the pressures were found to be directly related to the characteristics of the flowing pulp. In this zone pressure measurements were reproducible within ± 2 per cent regardless of changing boundary conditions.The effect of varying the "1" parameter of nozzles with a part circular entrance profile was examined and it was found that flow conditions approaching the ideal were obtained when the radius of curvature was between 0·40 and 0·550.

For deep block and panel caving mines, undercut or extraction level instability can have as much impact on overall recovery as underbreak or the premature ingress of waste. If the area of the mine affected by excessive convergence is small, recovery is usually possible. However, there are several examples of entire blocks that were abandoned prematurely due to footprint collapse. Clearly, such global instability has a major impact on recovery and must be avoided – this is one of the essential tasks for the design team.The design problem is complex. The planning engineer must ensure that the footprint has sufficient capacity to withstand the maturing loads in the cave, accounting for the effects of stress path, geological structures and the rock mass conditions. These are often uncertain and only sometimes quantified.The demand on the footprint will also be influenced by decisions and actions taken during production, especially related to draw, which can worsen a developing problem. Perhaps most importantly, the design decisions that favour stability and lead to lower deformation also negatively impact on idealised cave flow. Many engineers aim to minimise the size of extraction level pillars, to improve theoretical future resource recovery but in fact this can reduce recovery if widespread deformation ensues due to the undersized pillars.In 2014, PT Freeport Indonesia undertook detailed numerical analysis to quantify the effects of variability in rock mass conditions and geological structure on overall footprint performance. The analysis accounted for a range of stress paths and maturing cave loading scenarios sourced from a calibrated whole-of-cave deformation-flow model. The intent was to replicate some of the diversity and distribution of pillar deformation outcomes that may be seen in practice at Freeport.The discontinuum finite element analysis was able to replicate damage localisation around persistent structures, a realistic distribution of drive deformation and show how small areas of instability can evolve into major problems if poorly managed. The limits of pillar size and ground support as solutions to a number of different instability problems was also investigated, showing that pillar size alone was not a sufficient remedy for all adverse circumstances.In this paper, we describe the workflow for numerical analysis of footprint deformation. Despite technological improvements and better understanding of the hazards, coal dust explosions stilI occur. Experimental explosions in galleries in various countries extend knowledge with the constant aim of providing safer working conditions. The inadvertent ignition of an accumulation of methane is the traditional initiator of the coal dust explosion.There are specific parameters of coal dust explosibility and explosion propagation, including the important volatile matter in the coal, fineness and dispersibility of the dust and its concentration. Accepting that initiation cannot be absolutely prevented, it is necessary to consider explosion suppression. While both limestone dust and water are the chosen explosion suppressants, in practice water has more limitations to its efficacy when related to the degree of explosion violence. These data give rise to the criteria for explosion suppression, differences in favoured mining geometries, and using the same principles, to differences in suppression treatments.

The stability of parallel underground coal mine galleries and pillars have been investigated using two- and three-dimensional (3D) numerical stress analysis. Anisotropic horizontal in situ stresses and the direction of the excavations have been considered in the numerical analysis. The stability of the tunnels driven in a coal seam at various working depths has been investigated taking into account different strata conditions and then results from two- and three-dimensional numerical modelling studies were compared. Maximum principal stress components have been chosen in three various directions: vertical, parallel and perpendicular to the tunnel axis. Analysis have shown that in the anisotropic in situ stress field, the favourable direction of underground mine openings which have different strata conditions depend not only on the horizontal in situ stresses but also on the vertical in situ stresses. Furthermore, 3D numerical modelling studies have been carried out to investigate stability of multiple entry longwall panel gate roads and pillars with various width-to-length ratios (W/L). Results of the modelling studies have shown that the critical dimension of coal pillars depends on their width and the direction of maximum horizontal stresses.

An optical computing system was used to determine spacings and frequencies in geological fabrics and engineering joint fabrics.Three-dimensional arrays of joints were plotted on an equal-area net. Directions in which true spacings are seen were determined from these plots. Photographs taken along these directions were used for optical computing.

The behaviour of iron ore granules in the feeding process of sintering is significantly influenced by the material properties of the granulated mix. Therefore, the measurement of key material properties of the iron ore granulated mix is indispensable prior to the simulation of the sintering process based on the discrete element method (DEM). In this paper, three key property parameters of the iron ore granulated mix, apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient, were measured in laboratory-scale experiments. For different sintering processes, the moisture content of the granulated mix normally varies according to the specific requirements for granule size distribution and operating conditions. Therefore, understanding the effect of moisture content on the property parameters of iron ore granules is very helpful in accurately determining the property parameters for DEM simulation work. In this paper, six groups of iron ore granule samples with six levels of moisture contents were prepared through granulation and the trends in apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient with the increase of moisture content were plotted and analysed based on the measurement results. The results show that as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent, the apparent density decreases from about 3000 to 2800 kg/m3. With moisture increasing within the same range, the elastic modulus first decreases from over 200 MPa to below 100 MPa and then reaches a relative constant value of about 40 MPa at higher moisture contents. Rolling friction coefficients are measured using two methods with both indicating a similar trend, with the rolling friction coefficient first decreasing and then rising as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent. Development on the North Kalgurli mine has established a major penetration of ore into calc schist. This is controlled by a system of east-dipping strike faults. Previously, most calc schist ore bodies were regarded as being confined to the quartz dolerite greenstonecak schist contact environment.INTRODUCTIONOne of the most interesting and economically important developments which has taken place in the Kalgoorlie Field over the past 20 years is the proved penetration of ore into calc schist on the North Kalgurli Mine. This is quite extensive, both laterally and in depth, and has occasioned some modification of geological thought in the search for additional ore sources.Ore has been mined in calc schist almost since the first major gold discoveries were made and the principal features of the various types of deposit are well covered in the literature of the field. However, occurrences in calc schist have not been characterised by the same degree of continuity or frequency as the innumerable lode formations in the more favourable quartz dolerite, and there has been a tendency to regard them as isolated and discontinuous ore bearing structures, occurring only under very special conditions.It is not intended to describe the whole range of calc schist ore occurrences but only major controlling structures, whose penetration therein has been definitely established and in which an appreciable amount of ore has been and is still being found. It is considered that similar structures may present a major objective for future exploratory work in other parts of the field.

The Burra Burra Mine is situated in complexly folded Torrensian dolomites and limestones forming the faulted axial region of a major anticline. The orebody mined was largely of secondary origin and confined between two faults, Kingston's on the west and Tinline's on the east. The orebody occurred at the junction between cherty dolomites and a clastic limestone with a large mass of marble breccia along its western margin. Secondary ore consisted of carbonates and oxides in the breccia and the ore bed and detrital copper minerals deposited as part of a clastic breccia in sinkholes and solution cavities in the dolomites and ore beds.Primary sulphides occur disseminated in the marble breccia and in stratiform habit in the ore bed. Kingston's so-called "lode" may be mineralized marble breccia.The marble breccia appears to be of diapiric or sedimentary origin and there is evidence to support a sedimentary origin for some of the copper sulphides. No igneous rocks have been discovered within 20 miles of the mine and any hydrothermal activities were probably at comparatively low temperature. The possibility of extensive stratiform and disseminated copper sulphide mineralization in the marble breccia and ore bed requires testing by further drilling and geophysical surveys.INTRODUCTIONThe re-interpretation of Burra Burra geology and ore formation discussed in this paper resulted from a comprehensive investigation of the mine and its surrounding district begun in December 1961 and in progress at the time of writing. (February 1963). The decision to investigate Burra Burra was taken after a thorough examination of records and reports of all non-ferrous metal deposits throughout South Australia and was given impetus by a report by Thomson (1963) suggesting a sedimentary origin for the copper mineralization. Although the author does not concur fully with Thomson's interpretation there is no doubt that sedimentary processes have played an important part in the formation of the Burra Burra copper deposit, nor is there any doubt that igneous activity played no part.

The No. 2 Ore-shaft, at Mount Isa Mines Limited, involving the use of boreholes as ropeways for the upper portion thereof, constitutes, we believe, a unique feature in hoisting installations. The boreholes were sunk from the surface to a depth of 390 ft., thus eliminating the necessity of erecting the hoist at an underground location or construction of the shaft for this distance. Fig. 1, a diagrammatic cross-section through the shaft, shows the complete installation from the surface down to the first loading station below No. 7 haulage level.During the latter part of 1936, conditions encountered in sinking the Main Ore shaft made it impracticable and uneconomical to continue deepening it to serve haulage levels below the present No. 5-level. Plans were therefore made for an interior shaft, to serve new lower levels, that terminated above No. 5-level so that ore hoisted could be drawn off on this level and transported to the Main Ore shaft for final conveyance to the mill crude ore bin.Referring again to Fig. 1, it is apparent that the section above No. 4-level, if opened out to full shaft size, would be inoperative and would serve no useful purpose except, possibly, as a ventilation duct. Original plans therefore did not include continuation of the shaft above No. 4-level. Excavation of a hoist room upon No. 5-level; erection of sheave wheels just below No. 4-level, and a long inclined ropeway leading from the hoist to the sheaves, were incorporated in the general layout. This Institute, by nature of its charter, draws on various persons in the mining and metallurgical world of Australasia for its President from year to year, and consequently when the presidential address is given by one of these people the topic. which they generally select is a topic to which they are accustomed and on which they are able to speak with authority.As most of you know, my prime object in life has been concerned with steelmaking, so tonight you can steel yourself to the thought that you are going to be spoken to about steelmaking.Even if that were not the case, and were I not particularly interested in steelmaking, I think it would be appropriate to look at steelmaking in a broad sense on a basis of pure metallurgical interest, because the steel industry is going through as big a revolution today as it went through something over one hundred years ago when Bessemer made a theory become a fact.Bessemer, and as the Americans prefer to think Kelly, separately conceived the idea of blowing cold air through molten pig iron, and, contrary to the then general belief, this did not result in cooling of the metal but succeeded rather in heating it, and in burning out of the rather crude pig iron the impurities which prevented it from becoming a ductile metal.For many years before this, steel had been made in a very small painstaking way by what was known as the crucible process. The size by size batch flotation behaviour of copper activated sphalerite from synthetic mixtures with quartz was determined. In terms of recovery of sphalerite, the size fractions could be grouped into coarse, intermediate, and fine ranges. The behaviour of the coarse and fine ranges was significantly poorer than that of the intermediate range in both the extent and rate of flotation.Each size fraction had a fast and a slow floating component.The main effect of changing the copper sulphate addition was to alter the proportion of any size fraction which was fast floating. No correlation could be found, between the amount of copper on the spha:lerite andeither the flotation rate of the mineral or the amount of copper added to the system. It was found that fine particles did not appear to consume greatly disproportionate amounts of copper sulphate during conditioning. A modified conditioning procedure was found to lead to a higher rate of flotation and recovery of coarse sphalerite and to make poss1ble substantial savings of copper sulphate.

Emphasis is placed on Australian contributions, and their impact on gold metallurgy. The following data cover a phase in the systematic testing of gold deposits which does not appear to have been specificalIy investigated.In boring either secondary or primary deposits, gold, by virtue of its high specific gravity, will tend to migrate downward, below the driving shoe or bit, and thus cause misinterpretation of value unless final recovery Can be effected after the hole has been bottomed.Unlike fortuitous and non-recurrent errors, due to, say, running ground, "pile driving" or rock fractures, systematic error due to migration may be unpredict.able from operating data alone, and, therefore, result in serious miscalculation of the weighted average upon which the engineer's recommendation is based.Applied to diamond drilling, loss by downward migration appears to have been largely responsible for distrust of sludge assays in the past. On the other hand, although modern practice rightly trends towards an integration of both core and sludge samples in borehole valuation, the possibility of systematic loss must be investigated when using combination graphs such as those of Longyear, Moehlman and WeIler. If the sludge value is incorrect the combination graphs will serve solely to stultify the core valuation.It appears to be axiomatic that: 1. With full core, sludge assays are of minor import.2. With recovery above 90%, differentjal grinding, of the high grade sections may have occurred, and this c!ln be corrected only by the us.e of cOJ;rect sludge valuation.3. With core recovery less than, say, 70%, no accurate valuation is possible without integrating the sludge assay.4. With less than, say, 10% core recovery, the sludge assay affords the sole basis of evaluating a borehole which may have cost many hundreds of pounds.The conditions demanded for reliable sludge valuation have, in practice, been restricted to high quantitative recovery and return of nearly 90% of the drill water. It is submitted, however, that the following additional knowledge is required:1. The nature of gold distribution in the ore.2. The lifting power of the return water column, which can be gauged by the maximum quartz particle, provided that the degree of "hindrance" can be determined.3. That all gold has been cleared from the bottom of the borehole immediately after it has passed through the orebody.The three cases discussed hereunder are offered not only as proof of the thesis, but also in the hope of promoting discussion on the interpretation of borehole values and on methods for saving free gold in the sludge. The fact that two of them cover alluvial boringand the third diamond drilling has resulted in this attempt to reduce the behaviour of free gold to a basis common to all types of boring.

This paper reviews the current techniques employed in the prediction of subsidence and how they have been applied to partial extraction systems. The method using influence functions to describe the shape of the profile is investigated in detail and has been adopted to model the subsidence over workings in Huntly. It is compared with the profile methods developed in the United Kingdom and found to predict the subsidence profile more accurately than these methods.
