Emf measurements on SE galvanic cell: SS; Ni-NiO I solid electrolyte/ZrO2 + CaO I [Pb + Bi]liq alloy; (PbO); SS were made in the temperature range 913-1034 K to determine the thermodynamic properties of oxygen dissolution in liquid lead. Bismuth alloys with bismuth in the dilute concentration range of 0 to 3.08 mass per cent and oxygen in the alloy varied by equilibrating the metallic system with a suitable (PbO) slag. Wagner's interaction parameter approach was used to calculate the ternary interaction parameter, eBiO at temperatures of 913, 953 and 993 and 1034 K and to observe the temperature dependence eBiO = 19 200/T - 17.454. Quasichemical fonnulation was employed to yield lnf BiO and reveal the effect of bismuth on oxygen in lead. The results obtained are discussed on the basis of theoretical models and the value of Wagner's energy parameter 'h' estimated to predict the results in a Pb-Bi-O system.

The Proterozoic Pb-Zn deposits of the Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia, include HYC (McArthur River), Mt. Isa, Dugald River, Lady Loretta and Hilton. Two seamingly incom- patible depositional models have been proposed to account for their origin. Finlow-Bates (1980), Large (1983) and Russell(1983) classify these-deposits as sediment-hosted submarine exhalative deposits. This class includes Rammelsberg, Meggen, Silvermines, Sullivan and others. In contrast, a lacus- trine, shallow-water origin has been advocated by Williams and Logan (1981), Logan and Williams (1984), Muir (1983) and Eugster (1985). The discrepancies between these two models can be removed by creating a separate class, that of continental sediment-hosted exhalative deposits.. HYC., Mt. Isa and Dugald belong to this class and their sediments were deposited in shallow, alkaline lakes. Metal- rich, hot, Na-Ca-Cl brines entered the basins along boundary faults and interacted with pore fluids and sediments, depositing-Cu-Zn-Pb sul- fides. Similar brines entered the Lady Loretta basin after marine flooding, depositing sulfi- des and barite, placing Lady Loretta into the class of marine Sedex deposits.

A combination of the needs of business, employee desires and safety and health considerations is stimulating increasing attention to the time spent by people at work and the timing of that work. Particularly we are seeing: - innovative work schedules for 24-hour mining businesses; and - response from industry to accommodate the needs, even the desires, of employees in return for systems which are more productive and more capital efficient. There appears to be an evolutionary trend for business management to become more sophisticated and responsive to the need for achieving close to best cost work schedules to sustain continuous improvement. The underlying motivating forces driving this trend for improved techniques in organising attendance at, and time spent at work, is the seemingly inseparable combination of technological advance and ever-increasing accumulation of capital. The mining industry has not remained untouched by this thrust for ever-increasing need for best use of labour, to adopt advances in technology and to provide attractive opportunities for putting accumulated capital to work. An essential component of this on-going thrust is a substantial effort by the mining industry to improve the performance of labour by providing most-productive work schedules.

One of the fundamental parameters of the race- way is its extent (a{ o), which has a significant effect on the distribution of gas and material flows in the lower region of the furnace. pp The known relationships for determination of aC o in most cases link the length of the raceway with the parameters of the blast, while the para- meters of the coke layer, in which the raceway is formed, are either ignored or else expressed in terms which are difficult to determine experimen- tally. Furthermore, the coke combustion propert- ies are not always taken into account in current blast furnace operating practice with combined blast. A complex dimensionless parameter, which re- flects the properties of the interacting media, is the ratio of the kinetic energy of the hot, com- bined gas stream to the potential energy of the coke flow, burning at the tuyere in a gas of known composition. In mineral processing of complex sulfide ores containing copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), flotation has been commonly used. Typical Pb mineral in the ores is galena (PbS), while some types of the ores contain anglesite (PbSO4). This article reviews our recent studies on the effects of coexisting PbSO4 on the flotation of complex sulfide ores, and a method to suppress the floatability of sphalerite (ZnS) in the presence of PbSO4 was proposed. Comparison of flotation experiments for different types of model samples showed that PbSO4 makes the separation of Zn from Cu difficult; that is, for the model sample containing PbS without PbSO4, Zn could be separated from Cu, while when the model sample containing PbSO4, Zn was recovered together with Cu as froth. Solution analysis and thermodynamic calculation suggested that Pb2+ was released from PbSO4 and reacted with ZnS to form PbS, acting as an adsorption site for the flotation collector, xanthate. This would be the main reason for high floatability of ZnS in the presence of PbSO4. As a method to suppress ZnS floatability for the ores containing PbSO4, a pre-treatment of the ores to remove PbSO4 prior to flotation was proposed. The results of model experiments using mixture of ZnS and PbSO4 showed that ~97 per cent of PbSO4 was dissolved within 30 minutes of pretreatment using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as extractant, and thus ZnS floatability was markedly suppressed. Moreover, Pb2+ extracted from PbSO4 during the pre-treatment could be recovered as zero-valent Pb by the cementation using zero-valent Fe as a reductant. The details of ZnS flotation in the presence of PbSO4 and the effects of the pre-treatment are discussed based on the results of surface analysis like XPS.

Continuous improvement in environmental management assists in the achievement of sustainability goals for the processing of minerals. The use of regular internal environmental audits (scored or unscored) which form an integral component of an Environmental Management System (EMS), provide demonstrable evidence of this improvement. Case studies are presented for a number of major coal mines in the Hunter Valley, where regular internal environmental audits have been undertaken every two to three months, over periods varying from 18 months to five years. Examples of the benefits of improved environmental performance (driven by the audit process) to sustainable development are provided.The auditing process as described here for coal mines, and coal handling and preparation plants, is equally applicable to the processing of other mineral ores, metalliferous mines, quarries, and oil and gas projects.

Magnetic field studies provide remote sensing of magnetisation distributions and a means to investigate moderately- to strongly-magnetised ore deposits that may be partially or totally buried. However, above-surface magnetic field surveys have limited capability to resolve the detail of magnetisation distributions because of the large separation between the magnetisation and the magnetic sensor. While some of this detail is available from magnetic susceptibility logging within boreholes or from magnetisation studies on recovered core, these measurements are limited to the exact trace of the boreholes. The large disconnect between ground or aeromagnetic surveys and highly-localised borehole sampling can cause problems in developing robust source models from magnetic survey data. The measurement of magnetic field in boreholes has the capacity to at least partially bridge that gap by measuring the magnetic field due to magnetisations proximal to, but not intersected by, the boreholes.CSIRO has developed the world’s first downhole magnetic tensor gradiometer. This instrument measures magnetic field gradients in all directions within a borehole. A prototype instrument has been built and tested as part of phase 1 of the Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre (DET CRC). The prototype performed well with magnetic pyrrhotite at the DET CRC test site in the Adelaide Hills and at Carpentaria’s Hawsons magnetite deposit south of Broken Hill. Further work is required to reduce the diameter of the probe so that it can operate in NQ holes (it is currently limited to HQ or wider) and to transform it to a continuous logging tool. The borehole tensor gradiometer can be used to investigate the continuity of magnetisation over a distance of several metres to tens of metres away from a borehole intersection and the structural dip of the magnetic body. It can be used to either replace or augment downhole magnetic susceptibility logging. There is a growing demand for copper driven by its applications in renewable energy and electric vehicles. Sulfide ores are an important source of copper. Flotation is a critical front-end process used to remove gangue minerals and concentrate the copper minerals. The electrochemical activity of sulfide minerals contributes to their overall activity in the flotation pulp. The mineral rest potential dictates how collectors interact with the mineral surface, and hence ultimately on the flotation response. Dissolved oxygen, (DO), pH, redox potential (Eh) and water composition and ionic strength are also significant in controlling flotation performance. The aim of this investigation was to determine the influence of the electrochemical environment both during milling and flotation on the flotation behaviour of bornite and chalcocite. For this investigation, the interactions of collector with bornite and chalcocite were studied using synthetic plant water (SPW1) and deionised water (DIW) at 5 different pH levels. Sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) was used both in microflotation, collector adsorption and zeta potential tests.

The ability to simulate the stability of post-mining landscapes over time scales ranging from decades to millennia is a critical element in the assessment of closure designs for uranium mines. Landscape Evolution Modelling (LEM) technologies provide a means to simulate and assess the long-term geomorphic stability of a conceptual rehabilitated landform for periods of thousands of years. However, a major issue with simulations derived from long-term modelling are the limitations associated with the data inputs. Specifically, simulations which utilise historic rainfall data only represent the variability of rainfall events that have occurred over a relatively short period. Consequently, these simulations run the risk of not accounting for the full range of rainfall variability that might be expected over an extended period of up to 10 000 years. Therefore, for this study a probabilistic approach was adopted to generate a stochastic synthetic rainfall data set to produce a series of unique rainfall scenarios, each representing a simulated period of 100 years. Importantly, utilising such an approach allows uncertainty in predictions to be better accounted for and provides a range or probability of likely outcomes.In this study, the effect of ten individual rainfall scenarios are assessed in terms of their impact on the predicted erosion and denudations rates produced by the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM for a conceptual rehabilitated landform of the Ranger Uranium Mine (RUM) in the Northern Territory of Australia, focusing on the Corridor Creek catchment (Figure 1). While legislation requires this site to be erosionally stable for at least 10 000 years (Commonwealth of Australia, 1987), here the focus is on the first one hundred years of landscape evolution, as this is the period in which erosion is expected to be higher, with limited vegetation cover or pedogenic development in the initial decades after rehabilitation. In 1993 after over 110 years of mining operations, production ceased at the Broken Hill North Mine. Following the cessation of operations a rehabilitation program was developed to satisfy the requirements of the various government departments. This program has been implemented progressively since mine closure. The paper will discuss: primary aims and objectives of the rehabilitation program, implementation of the program, rationale behind rehabilitation objectives, and problems encountered in implementation of the program. To-date the primary rehabilitation of the mine has involved the capping of redundant tailing dams with inert waste rock to prevent the contamination of the receiving environment. A Water Management Plan has been developed to contain all run-off from the mine area in an extreme storm event. A cultural heritage assessment of the leases has been undertaken to ensure the rehabilitation is consistent with the historical significance of the site and community expectations. All redundant material from the mine has been sold in a æno reserveÆ auction and the workshop area has been relocated to the Southern operations. At present the only active areas on the mine are a maintenance area for equipment for the Potosi open pit, and a primary crusher for Potosi ore which is railed to the Southern operations for further processing. Upon completion of the rehabilitation program, Pasminco Broken Hill Mine intends to relinquish the mining leases to the Department of Mineral Resources.

Stawell Gold Mines operates the Magdala underground mine in western Victoria, Australia. Several orebodies are extracted by longhole open stoping at a depth of 900 m below the town of Stawell. Some stopes are backfilled with cemented slurry rock fill (CSRF) to ensure stability, increase recovery of ore reserves, minimise dilution of ore grades, and add value to the project. StawellÆs simple CSRF system is described, including the novel equipment used to minimise capital costs. Design criteria, operating procedures, monitoring systems and results are discussed in detail. Practical aspects are considered, including lessons learnt about barricades, overbreak and segregation. The economics of CSRF are discussed, including capital costs, operating costs and the total cost per ounce of gold poured. Options for mining with and without CSRF are compared in terms of return on investment and net cash flows. Examples demonstrate the method used to calculate æbreak-evenÆ stope ore grades which determine whether or not CSRF will add value in different circumstances.

Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) is the worldÆs largest producer of smelter grade alumina, located in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia. The plant employs evaporative cooling towers for waste heat rejection. Process water requirements include red mud residue disposal, steam venting to the atmosphere and Calcination feed moisture. Raw (untreated) water consumption in 2001 was 37 700 m3/d or 3.8 m3 per tonne of production. The Gladstone region experienced a water shortage in the period 2001 to 2003, resulting in progressive water restrictions. Industry operated under a ten per cent restriction from April 2002 and in November 2002 a 25 per cent restriction came in force. The maximum restriction level of 50 per cent was anticipated for the middle of 2003. Water restrictions of these magnitudes have the potential to result in significant production limitations, which would have major economic consequences for QALÆs owners, customers, suppliers and employees. Therefore it was imperative that measures be found to mitigate the impact of these restrictions. Furthermore, as one of the largest water users in the Gladstone region, QAL had an obligation to the community to minimise water usage as much as possible. A thorough analysis of water usage on site was conducted, focussing on all water streams leaving the plant. The philosophy used was that by minimising water outputs, the inputs would follow suit. Where possible, preference was given to solutions that provided lasting water savings. This occurs when the value of the water saving justifies the project cost, irrespective of water restrictions. By June 2002 an average water saving of 19 per cent was achieved, almost double the required saving. By end November 2002 further projects had increased the total water saving to 29 per cent, mainly through the re-use of GladstoneÆs municipal treated effluent as wash water. Further measures to reach the target of 50 per cent reduction were investigated. The evaporative cooling system was to be replaced with seawater cooling, using cooling towers to minimise the seawater pumping cost. Another benefit of this concept was the ability to dispose of the cooling tower bleed stream with the existing system for neutralised red mud disposal. This would avoid the need for an additional environmental outfall from the plant. In February 2003 the Gladstone region received over 500 mm of rain, which boosted water reserves to five years supply at forecast usage rates. This led to the lifting of all water restriction. As most of the implemented water savings measures are economically viable in the absence of water restrictions, raw water usage at QAL is still less than 75 per cent of pre-2002 levels.

Increases in mining and production capacities can have a major impact on the productivity of a mining and production facility during the construction and commissioning period. With minimised production loss in mind, a multi-phase modular plant design was implemented on the Khumani Mine in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The first phase involved a run-of-mine (ROM) crushing facility and the subsequent modular processing facility with capacity for 8.4 million tons per annum (Mt/a) product. An interim phase comprising modular additions to the processing facility increased capacity to 10 Mt/a product, with tie-ins occurring during maintenance periods. The second phase involves a second ROM crushing facility and modular additions to the processing facility, increasing capacity to 16 Mt/a product. This paper outlines the design considerations and limitations with modular design that need to be considered and shows how effectively construction and commissioning were implemented within shut-down and maintenance periods.

The McKinnons gold deposit is hosted by weakly deformed, Palaeozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Cobar Basin in the western Lachlan Fold Belt of New South Wales. Mineralisation comprised a largely supergene resource of 1.7 Mt of ore, grading 1.7 g/t gold, established over structurally controlled, primary gold and base-metal mineralisation in underlying, carbonate-rich meta-siltstones and sandstones of Early Devonian age. Mineralisation was associated with at least two major fluid cycles. The first cycle was characterised by four stages of vein formation. Early quartz and carbonate veins (Stages 1 and 2) and quartz-pyrite breccias (Stage-3) occurred prior to, or early in, the main regional deformation (D1). Continued D1 deformation produced syntectonic, carbonate-base-metal veins (Stage-4), primarily in dilatant zones adjacent to fold axes. The second cycle of mineralisation was an epithermal-style event, driven by a shallow, syn-D2 or post-tectonic intrusion, defined by aeromagnetic imaging. The intrusion may have exploited a jog, controlled along the basin margin by basement faults. Mineralisation produced gold-pyrite veins, associated with pervasive quartz-sericite-adularia and chlorite-sericite alteration. Highest primary gold grades are confined to quartz-adularia boiling zones. The McKinnons deposit offers an important example of mineralisation formed by multiple processes. Early-stage, base-metal mineralisation at McKinnons reflects structurally focussed, basin dewatering and metamorphic processes, typical of other deposits in the Cobar Basin. By contrast, late-stage gold mineralisation at McKinnons is magmatically driven and of epithermal style. Recognition of overprinting distinctive geological events is critical, not only in modelling ore formation, but in developing a versatile exploration concept.

Fatalities that occurred because of rock falls in off-reef excavations (excluding shafts) over the last three years range between ten per cent and 20 per cent of the total number of fatalities that have occurred due to rock falls in the South African mining industry. These rock falls, mostly exacerbated by blasting practices, occur because of failure on discontinuities within the rock mass. Among other reasons of their occurrence is insufficient support installation or the incorrect assessment of rock mass conditions. This report presents qualitative analysis intended to outline rock stability conditions in tunnels subjected to dynamic loading. Seismic waves including those created by firing an explosive charge in tunnel rocks are considered. The rock behaviour is monitored using geophones and extensometers variably installed to record the near and far effects of roof bolt support units on a dynamically loaded rock. The paper discusses the results of field investigations.

A study of the bacterial oxidation of naturally occurring high-purity sulphide minerals (FeS2, Fel_xS, CuFeS2, Cu2S) has been conducted using a mesophilic strain of T. 6ejtAooLcdcth4. As well as metal analyses and solution pH, partitioning of sulphide sulphur into elemental sulphur and sulphate ion has been monitored. Partially oxidised sulphide substrates have been characterised at regular time intervals by X-ray diffraction methods and extra-cellular organic compounds reporting into leach solution have been identified by'thin layer chromatography. The results indicate that the S¦/SO4 2 partitioning of the sulphide substrates is independent of cell inoculum size and initial pulp density and varies with solution pH, Eh, leaching time and mineralogical properties of the individual sulphide minerals. The signifi- cance of results for applications in selective flotation, coal desulphurisation and agglomera- tion has been outlined.

Blasting is at first sight a simple operation. Blastholes are drilled in a suitable pattern, primed, charged with explosives, stemmed and finally the blastholes are connected together to give the appro- priate initiation sequence. In practice the action of the explosive takes place in the interior of an opaque rock mass and only the external faces of the rock mass to be blasted can be easily observed. The mechanisms of blasting cannot be observed directly and must be inferred from observations of the free face and meas- urements of particle movement made by sensors grouted into holes in the rock. Explosives react very rapidly, in some microse- conds and any instrumentation of a blast must have an appro- priate response time. In many mines several rock types can be encountered during production. Several different methods of blasting may be necessary to cope with changes in rock types espe- cially if weak rocks are found in the final limits. This also makes it difficult to be sure of getting a large enough volume of rock to perform a series of reproducible experiments. While there appears to be agreement on the mechanism of blasting it is unlikely that a detailed understanding of how all the variables that can be encountered in practice affect blasting. The ease of assessment of the results of blasting depends on the criteria used. It is easy to isolate, measure and count over- size boulders. It is however difficult and costly to get a complete fragment size distribution. Methods used to assess blasting can vary significantly from site to site and the ways in which data are collected, presented and analysed will vary making compari- son of blasts at several locations very difficult. The definition of an optimum blast can also vary with the type of blasting. The muck-pile profile and fragmentation will be different for a dragline to that for a truck and shovel operation. In order to be able to assess blasting the mechanism has to be understood. Th rock and explosive properties considered rele- vant to blasting can then be determined. Modelling of Synergistic Effect of Cyanex 302 and D2EHPA in Zinc Solvent Extraction A comprehensive model is presented to predict the synergistic effect of D2EHPA and Cyanex 302 on co-extraction of zinc and manganese. The experimental results indicated that pH, temperature and the extractants ratio have strong effects on the extraction process. Correlations were proposed to predict the distribution coefficient of zinc and manganese between two phases at different conditions by multiple linear regression. The correlations were simplified by eliminating less important terms by analysis of variance. Optimum conditions (ie pH, temperature, extractants ratio and aqueous to oil phase volumetric ratio) for obtaining maximum separation of zinc from manganese at different zinc concentrations and number of extraction stages were determined. For finding the optimum condition genetic algorithm was used. Comparison the model estimations and the experimental data show that the presented model has good ability to predict the behaviours of zinc extraction system over Cyanex 302 and D2EHPA.

The Big Wainihinihi River and tunnel are located on the western side of the Southern Alps of New Zealand within the active Alpine Fault zone, which marks the boundary between the Pacific and Australian Tectonic Plates. The tunnel was built over 100 years ago to supply water for gold mining, but it now conveys water from a high-energy intake to a canal that supplies three of TrustPower’s hydro-electric power stations with a combined installed generating capacity of 10 MW. Part of the tunnel passes through an unstable 50° schist slope, which fi rst suffered a wedge failure in the 1929 Arthur’s Pass Earthquake and was reinstated in the mid-1970s for hydro generation. In 2008, TrustPower’s monitoring system showed that the wedge failure had remobilised and that urgent remediation was required.Harker Underground Construction (Harker) was awarded a design-build contract to restore the tunnel to service by tunnelling a new central section. Their geotechnical engineers, Peters and Cheung, reviewed the tunnel’s stability and proposed a new, safer tunnel alignment, deep behind the failure wedges. This work was based on their failure model, cost-benefit studies, and engineering geology completion mapping at the time of re-opening.Construction innovation was an important factor in ensuring the project’s success, as were detailed geological and geotechnical information, a robust methodology, strong client relationship and planning. To suit the varying rock conditions and restricted space, Harker combined a traditional drill-and-blast method with light-weight modular steel sets and timber supports to reduce construction costs and mitigate support risk. To make material handing easier in the tight conditions, a special electric locomotive was designed and built and blasting confi gurations were adapted to suit varying rock conditions in the highly fractured schist.The isolated site meant interesting and unexpected challenges, particularly communications and resources (both human and material). Despite that, the project was completed within budget, on schedule, and with no lost-time injuries.

In the past many coal mining projects commenced without any consideration being given to eventual site rehabilitation. Now that site rehabilitation is assuming greater importance with changing community expectations, and standards are becoming less negotiable, it cannot be ignored in either the development of mine working plans or economic models. The "unspecified" rehabilitation measures associated with many existing projects will be the subject of debate for some time to come yet. It would be wise to plan for the future. Once an agreeed standard of rehabilitation is accepted, good management involves considering practices which will facilitate eventual rehabilitation at least cost. Without planning for rehabilitation, many mines have adopted practices which are likely to result in very expensive rehabilitation measures and impact significantly on the overall profitability of the ventures. With adequate planning, procedures can be developed which achieve the same short term goals without significantly effecting cash flow but with very significant impacts on the final rehabilitation cost. This paper looks at the disposal of tailings and overburden in the coal mining process. The industry has in the past had an obvious preference for the "perceived" cheaper procedures for waste management such as wet disposal of tailings and high dumping of overburden. There are alternatives. The paper discusses the principles which should be incorporated into tailings and overburden disposal systems and identifies viable alternatives.
