Geologists in some underground gold mines collect grab samples from broken ore piles or trucks as a method of grade control. It is often known as muck sampling. Generally, the goal of grab sampling is to try and reconcile the mined grade at the ore source to the predicted grade and/or predict the mill feed grade. The mass of the sample collected is limited by health and safety issues, as well as by the capacity of the laboratory to process the samples within a given time frame. In general terms, grab sampling is known to be problematic because samplers tend to oversample the fines, and/or pick out high-grade fragments; surface sampling of piles does not test material within the pile; muck piles in development drives/faces are likely to be zoned due to the blasting sequence; high or low-grade material may preferentially segregate in the pile during mucking; the five per cent mass reject size of the material in muck piles is very large from underground blasting; some correlation usually exists whereby the larger fragments are enriched or depleted in the critical component of value; and the average error made in estimating the true stockpile grade is likely to be high. The method is prone to chronic fundamental sampling, grouping and segregation, delimitation, and extraction errors. Substantial warnings must be given about the use of grab sampling for grade control in gold mines. The method may appear to work sometimes, which can be attributed to a fine gold particle sizing and more disseminated distribution. As with all sampling methods, its appropriateness must be determined by ore characterization and heterogeneity testing to ensure the method suits the ore type.

The viscosities and the infrared spectra of the CaO-SiO2-MgO-CaF2(or Al2O3) slags were measured to enhance our understanding of the interrelationship among the thermophysical property, microscopic structure, and chemical thermodynamics of molten slags. The structural role of CaF2and Al2O3in the calcium silicate melts can be explained by a change of the degree of polymerization (DOP). The effect of CaF2on the viscous flow of molten slags is based on a decrease in the DOP by F-as well as by O2-ions and this was confirmed by the infrared (IR)spectra of the quenched slags. The effect of Al2O3on viscosity increase can be understood from an increase in the DOP by the incorporation of the [AlO4]-tetrahedra into the [SiO4]-tetrahedral units and this was also confirmed by the IR spectra. An amphoteric behaviour of Al2O3in the aluminosilicate melts could be correlated to the effect of ionic species of alumina, that is [AlO4]-tetrahedra and [AlO6]-octahedra, on the stability of silicate polyanions by taking the activity coefficients of slag components into account. Tarkwa Gold Mine is owned by Gold Fields Ghana, IAMGOLD and the Government of the Republic of Ghana in a 71%, 19% and 10% ratio. The mine is operated by Gold Fields Ghana. This large, low-grade, open pit, gold mining operation is located in Tarkwa, in the Western Region of Ghana, approximately 320 kilometres by road, west of Accra, the capital of Ghana, West Africa. In the Financial year ended June 2007, the operation mined a total of 108 million tons of which 22 million tons was ore. The mined ore is processed through three gyratory crushers supplying two heap leach pads (north and south) and a carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant. Before the 6 Sigma project commenced, the current fragmentation was resulting in sub-optimal feed size to these crushers. It was decided to use 6 Sigma methodology to improve the fragmentation. A defect was defined as a fragmentation analysis indicating less than 95% passing 750 mm. The objective was to improve fragmentation in order to achieve a constant throughput to the north heap leach crusher of 1500 t/h, a 5% increase in pit loading efficiency and a 50% decrease in rock breaker hours, equipment damage costs and in-pit sheeting costs respectively. However, this was not to be achieved at the expense of grade control as Tarkwa is exploiting a low grade, high volume deposit and therefore ore dilution must be kept to a minimum. This paper is intended to take the reader through the various 6 Sigma phases of the project (define?measure?analyse ?improve?control), which have resulted in a 10% reduction in loading times, of which half has been attributed to improved fragmentation, as well as a substantial increase in blasted stocks. The focus has been on both drilling and blasting parameters as both processes had to be taken into account. These parameters are technical but personnel factors were also identified and dealt with as they arose. In order to measure the impact of any change in the process parameters on the fragmentation size distribution, cameras have been acquired. One has been installed looking into the bowl of the north crusher and the other one was dedicated to field observation, of individual blasts. Both are used for ongoing fragmentation analysis. At Tarkwa, mining efficiency is strongly dependent on good fragmentation as well as the presence of unblasted ?toes? on the pit floors. Crusher throughput depends on an acceptable ore fragment size. Compliance with plan for actual hole depths was temporarily monitored by manual hole dipping, but this is now being replaced with a fully automated drill data management system developed by Sandvik and Modular Mining. The Six Sigma methodologies, using control charts based on data collected in the field, allowed the mine to improve methods for the control of blasted material. It also enforced the implementation of a quality control programme encompassing the entire drill and blast process.

Mintek is currently developing a design approach for the heap leaching of low-grade primary copper sulphide material. Since the leaching of chalcopyrite requires elevated temperatures, the generation and management of heat within the heap is crucial. Furthermore, the precipitation of iron needs to be managed to prevent premature blinding of the heap, and acid consumption needs to be limited to contain cost and limit the dissolution of gangue impurities. Standard column tests using jacketed 1-m and/or 6-m columns do not allow accurate prediction of temperature changes and heat generation in an actual heap. Mintek therefore utilizes a computer model to calculate the energy balance and heat generation with time, based on the measured sulphide oxidation rates in the column. The temperature in the column is then adjusted to reflect the computer-predicted temperature in an actual heap. Using this approach, an overall copper extraction of 70% was achieved in 120 days, using 1-metre columns, when treating an ore blend containing 1.36% chalcopyrite, 0.23% chalcocite, 0.07% covellite, 3.8% pyrite and silicate gangue (92%). The chalcopyrite contribution to the total copper content in the feed was 75%. This was followed by 6-m columns using a similar approach, and the column results will be validated on a 23,000 tonne test heap. Key Words: heap; bioleach; chalcopyrite

With the end of the official apartheid legislation in the early 1990s, South Africa was heralded as a non-racial country. However, racial awareness has been reintroduced into the country with the Affirmative Action and Black Economic Empowerment legislation. Gender and racial transformation are the current order of the day. All organizations are required to reflect in their make-up the demographics of the population as soon as possible. Scorecard shave been drawn up to measure the rate of transformation for gender and race in organizations. The mining industry in South Africa has been in the forefront of this transformation legislation and scorecards. This paper seeks to show the effect of gender and racial transformation on mining engineering education and professionalism by analysing the changing demographics of graduating mining students at both the South African universities offering a degree in mining engineering, the professional registration of mining engineers with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), and the membership of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the vocational institute for mining engineers. It also demonstrates the absurdity of gender and racial quotas based solely on the demographics of the current population of the country. This paper shows the degree to which mining engineering has transformed in both gender and race.

Following the blasting fatality on 17 December 2009, Landau Colliery was forced to change from the blasting practices that had been utilized since the start-up of the mine. Since then, attempts have been made to optimize blasting results. The challenge is rooted to the mining environment - during the early life of the mine, mining took place in virgin areas, whereas currently mining is taking place in areas overlying old underground bord and pillar workings. The underground bord and pillar workings aggravate phenomena such as spontaneous combustion, hot holes, and sinkholes. The 2009 fatality was attributed to hot holes causing premature detonation. Landau has been struggling with poor results from their overburden and coal blasts; leading to poor fragmentation of overburden and the PI parting that lies between the No.1 and No.2 coal seams. An extensive literature survey was completed in order to identify possible alternative solutions that could be evaluated for this unique mining environment, which demands a high degree of caution during mining to ensure factors such as dragline stability and personnel safety. The literature survey confirmed that the previous blasting technique, which was mainly characterized by air decking, was indeed the more efficient, although it was deemed unsafe because of the possibility of hot holes and the high sensitivity of detonators. Potential modifications to the blasting technique were modelled in a Microsoft Excel simulation that was available from the mine, and pit visits were conducted in order to determine whether implementation would be a problem. From the model it is evident that results can be improved by changing the current burden and spacing ratio. Visiting the pit revealed that the tie-in pattern and drilling inaccuracies are contributing to problem areas.

Charcoal is an interesting reducing agent because it is produced from growing wood which is renewable and does not contribute to global warming, provided that there is a balance between the felling of timber and growth of trees. In the biocarbon project the possibilities for using charcoal is investigated as well as other biological based and renewable reductants for ferroalloy production. The background for the project is that the Norwegian ferroalloy producers wish to contribute to reduction of CO2- emissions. This paper focuses on the use of charcoal instead of coke for the production of manganese alloys, and the consequences of doing so. Results from practical SiMn smelting experiments on a pilot scale have previously been reported, where only 12-14 % Si in the metal was obtained when charcoal was used. Recently we have attained satisfactory 18 %Si also for charcoal, but good results are indeed dependant on good furnace performance. There is no tradition for using charcoal for manganese production in Norway. A change from using mainly coke to the use of some charcoal will demand new routines for furnace operation, raw material and off-gas handling. Hence, characteristic properties of charcoal, which may cause change of furnace operation, have been measured and are compared to coke. The following results are presented: ?Thermal abrasion strength together with CO2- reactivity; important parameters for the performance of the upper part of the furnace. ?Coke-bed resistance; it will increase with the use of charcoal (a review of new results). ?Slag reactivity; a relevant method for testing slag reactivity of industrial reductants is of interest. The suggested method can serve for comparing slag reactivities towards graphite.

Analyses of accident records show that a better understanding of very basic strata control principles and practices, by production personnel, will improve worker safety. Workers, lack of knowledge, with respect to aspects of strata control, increases their exposure to such strata control risks. The primary objective of the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) project 02 02 07 was to develop tools for the transfer of strata control knowledge. Four such tools were developed, three of which focused on illiterate underground mine team members who are not yet able to take advantage of the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) learning process (see project outcomes 2, 3 and 4 below). The tools were designed to equip these workers with sufficient knowledge and ability to work safely underground until such time as they can take advantage of the MQA system. Project outcomes: 1 A four-minute video using animation to illustrate the causes and prevention of falls of roof in South African collieries. 2 Software to demonstrate the capability of reconstructing, interactively, accident scenes and actions that have taken place underground in stopes. 3 A strata control bridging course for illiterate mine team workers. 4 Small-scale wooden models that will be used to design life-size mock-up facilities to assist with the above mentioned bridging course. 5 Workshops and presentations to demonstrate the outcomes 1to 4 above.

The problem of determining the optimum exploitation life of machinery, namely the optimum time for machinery and equipment replacement, represents a complex and highly responsible engineering task. Taking into consideration the situation prevailing at coal pit mines in Yugoslavia, the tasks of this class are very complex and difficult. To make a decision on replacement of capital equipment and machinery, such as bucket wheel excavators within the mentioned systems, understands a management task of utmost responsibility. It requires high professional and analytical knowledge as well as the reliable arguments, based on multidisciplinary professional approach. In this paper, the authors present their views on the problem of establishing the optimum exploitation life of bucket wheel excavators, offering an algorithm, based on dynamic programming, as a solution. JoughinMr Turgay Gurun, in presenting his paper, indicated that this simulator was no purely theoretical exercise, but that the model had been used in the design of crushing plants of capacities ranging from 3 000 tons per day to 66 000 tons per day, and that recently the design of a plant of capacity of 99 000 tons per day had been studied.The crushing plant simulator was an independent portion of a much more comprehensive simulator for the design of a. complete recovery plant. It would be possible to use each section of this simulator on its own, and simulators would be designed to cover flotation concentrates, cash flow analyses of the entire project, and so on.Each simulator would be backed by a comprehensive data bank. For example, the crushing plant simulator was backed by such a data bank which included the performance and cost data from five manufacturers for an average of 30 items of process and materials handling equipment each. This meant that data preparation involved generally less work than would be required for a manual calculation. On average, data preparation for one run took 30 minutes and three minutes of computer time on an IBM 360/40 completed the run. The model could be valuable as a design tool in that it allowed the designers an opportunity to make a thorough examination of many alternative designs. It was also of value to plant operators as it could be used to predict the consequences of operating decisions.This paper generated much interest and there were numerous questions and contributions, so many, in fact, that the discussion had to be cut short.It was pointed out by Mr K. F. Lane that crushing plants represented a very large capital investment. A plant designed for 40 000 tons per day at 98 per cent efficiency might well in practice be run at 50 000 tons per day at, say, 83 per cent efficiency. He asked how, therefore, their design could be investigated without building economic criteria into the model? The author conceded that this was a tender point. He would have liked to have given facilities for more variability of the metallurgical information. He pointed out, however, that while there was no overdesign for conservatism built into his system, some overdesign was inevitable as the performance characteristics given by the manufacturers were generally conservative. Also, in his system, if lower recovery was allowed for, the system would nut through more tonnage."

The final removal of inclusions in the ladle, tundish, and mold in a continuous casting process involves the kinetic steps of liquid film drainage, interface rupture, and absorption of the inclusion into the overlaying molten slag. During this process, oxide inclusions can undergo chemical reactions with the slag. This paper presents recent results on imaging the slag/steel interface and elucidates the evolution of Al2O3and Al2O3-CaO inclusions during their separation from the steel and on their incorporation into the slag. Experimental results, obtained through a Confocal Scanning Laser Microscope, are compared with thermodynamic predictions.

The scheduled power cuts of early 2008 were a disturbing reminder that South Africa needs to expand its power-generating capacity. Low-grade and discard coals, of which South Africa has much, are a source of energy and amenable to combustion in circulating fluidized beds (CFBs). Foster Wheeler (FW) has a long record in developing this technology in boilers. The technology is flexible in burning a variety of fuels; low-grade, high-ash coals, good quality bituminous and anthracite coals, and biomass and waste fuels have all been used. CFB boilers are efficient, reliable and can be designed to meet tight emission standards. In recent years once-through supercritical (OTSC) CFB technology has been developed. It enables the next stage in CFB development to proceed to a medium-scale (500 MWe) utility in such projects as Lagisza, which runs at a net efficiency of nearly 44%. Scaling the technology up to 800 MWe with a net efficiency of>45% is planned to be commercial during 2009. CFB technology can reduce CO2 emissions in the repowering of coal-fired and greenfield power plants. It does so through greater efficiencies and by co-combusting coal with biomass. FW has also developed CFB technology for the gasification of biomass, as, for example, in a pressurized gasifier to produce syngas, which can be used for the production of biodiesel, thereby reducing CO2 emissions from vehicles. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) can potentially cut CO2 emissions in the generation of power from fossil fuels in the short term, provided that it gains public acceptance, that the required regulatory framework is created, and that emission-trading mechanisms or other incentives provide a solid return on the major investments required. Oxyfuel combustion is an option in CCS; Foster Wheeler is adapting its CFB combustion technology for oxy-fuel combustion to meet this challenge. It is developing Flexi-burn?, which enables a plant to be operated either with or without carbon capture. This paper describes the status of CFB technology in terms of boiler efficiency and fuel flexibility. It highlights the advantages of CFB technology for oxyfuel combustion, presents a development plan for Flexi-burn?, and discusses a pressurized gasifier for biodiesel applications.

AngloGold Ashanti operate a pyrite flotation plant at their East Gold Plant, Acid Plant and Flotation Plant (EGAF) metallurgical complex within their Vaal River operations in the North West province in South Africa. The flotation plant feed is reclaimed pyrite rich tailings and the concentrate produced is used as the source of sulphur for the EGAF acid plant. The sulphuric acid produced is in turn used for the recovery of uranium at the Vaal River South uranium plant. The original flotation plant built in 1960 was based on the use of many small volume flotation cells and was becoming very expensive to operate and its age severely limited further operation. A decision was taken in 2005 to replace this plant with a new one based on fewer, larger volume flotation cells. This paper describes the benefits of using larger volume flotation cells in this new flotation plant when compared to the smaller volume flotation cells in the old plant. The benefits of the new plant include a smaller plant footprint, fewer flotation cells, fewer pumps, no distribution boxes, simpler piping, a greater flotation volume and a reduction in installed power. The saving in capital cost could not be quantified because of the age of the old plant. The savings in operating cost will arise from fewer operators, less maintenance and reduced power consumption. The new plant has not been in operation long enough to quantify the benefits in operating cost and metallurgical performance. However, recovery improvements can be expected given the greater flotation volume (increased residence time) and the installation of larger, more efficient flotation cells.

Coal is mined by both surface and underground methods and its extraction is normally characterized by numerous hazards that can lead to catastrophic accidents, which result in devastating effects such as injuries or fatalities, damage to mining assets, and destruction of mineral resources. These hazards exist due to the ability of coal to support combustion and its association with toxic, flammable, and explosive gases. Underground coal mining entails higher safety risks than opencast coal mining, chiefly because of issues relating to mine ventilation and mine collapse. Furthermore, coal mine collapses mostly occur due to crumbling of mining supports, especially in room and pillar mining systems. To avoid such adverse occurrences, safety management systems need to be in place. This study reviews the various technological safety systems and principles that are used for safe-rescue and self-escape of miners in underground coal fires, particularly in South Africa, using data obtained from Mines Rescue Services in Carltonville, South Africa. The outcome of the review shows that practising safety culture has been given priority across many South African underground coal mines through setting up safety management systems and encouraging workers to stay committed to safety principles.

An efficient and portable mathematical model has been developed for simulating heat transfer in six-in-line slag-resistance-heating electric furnaces for smelting sulphide ores to produce base metals and platinum group metals. This model is a steady-state one relating furnace conditions and performances to various control and input parameters. Some transient effects occurring in electric furnaces are neglected for computation efficiency. This article describes the model development and modelling results. The present model is capable of predicting: (i) temperatures at various locations in a six-in-line furnace, such as slag bath, matte bath, solid charge, freeboard space, freeze lining, cooling water, and air gaps between solid material components, etc. (ii) freeze lining thickness, (iii)smelting rate, and (iv) heat loss rate, etc. A typical feature of the model is that it is easily portable to different application platforms and sufficiently efficient with execution times less than a few seconds. Therefore, it is possible to apply the model for online prediction and control of heat transfer and freeze lining thickness in industrial electric furnaces.

Solids suspension influences the quality of mixing and energy requirement in a solid-liquid system, both of which determine the efficiency of industrial processes such as nickel precipitation. Nickel solids concentration distribution in a stirred tank was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental methods. The concentration distribution of the nickel solids was compared with that of sand and glass. The laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) method was used to measure the velocity field for the liquid-only system and an optical technique was employed to determine the axial solids concentration distribution. Regions of in homogeneity in the tank were identified. It was found that, for a given solids loading, the solids concentration distribution depended on both particle size and particle size distribution. High solids loadings were investigated and a difference in the concentration distribution pattern was obtained with nickel, flint glass and sand particles. The CFD simulation results highlighted problems that could be associated with some conventional experimental methods of determining solids concentration distribution in a stirred tank. Traditional risk quantification methods provide little information on the sources of risk, and tend to produce static over-conservative evaluations, which do not account for changes in the performance of the project. Capital investment decisions for large mining projects require more complex risk evaluation models that include the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with uncertainty on project variables (price, grade, dilution, and production rates, among many other). In this context, real option valuation (ROV) methods have proven potential to quantify the risk associated with such variables and integrate alternative scenarios and management strategies into the evaluation process. In this paper, a risk quantification model is developed that successfully quantifies the risk associated with dilution, as a function of production rate. Quality assurance and quality control (or QAQC) plays a key role in safeguarding the level of confidence of the data generated during mineral exploration and mine development, and is also part of the reporting code requirements for resource estimation and reporting, as well as mining investment. Implementation of good policies and working protocols in quality management will result in the generation of reliable information, which is critical for decision-making on the future of the mining project. The use of certified reference materials, i.e., standard, blank, and duplicate samples, proves effective and efficient for ensuring the level of data confidence in terms of precision, accuracy, and sample contamination. This is well demonstrated by the practice of QC in the exploration programme for the chrysotile tailings storage facilities of Havelock Mine, using 1254 samples from 53 drill-holes. Different statistical tools were applied to analyse the assay results from these samples. The outcome substantiates that the QC practice established during the Havelock exploration project is aligned to best practice guidelines in the industry. The resource delineated indicates that the tailings material at Havelock could potentially become a significant source of supply to the global magnesium market.

As a result of the increased depth of mining in the South African gold mining industry mining induced seismicity is a severe problem. One of the strategies within the industry to contain the problem is to incorporate a system of regularly spaced stabilising pillars into mine layouts. At the Driefontein Gold Mine a system of closely spaced dip pillars is used to contain seismic energy emissions. Comparisons of seismic data for several mining clusters initially indicated a possible measure of success in the containment and occurrence of larger events. A detailed analysis of data over a 5-year period since the start of mining however, has revealed a delayed seismic response to the increasing strike spans. Significant changes marked by an increase in certain seismic variables have been observed at mining spans of between 100 to 120 meters and could be of significance to pillar spacing in the design of deep level mining layouts. La sismicité occasionnée par l’exploitation minière est un problème grave dans les mines profondes de l’industrie minière aurifère en Afrique du Sud. Une des stratégies utilisées dans l’industrie a été de maîtriser le problème en incorporant un système de piliers de stabilisation régulièrement espacés dans la disposition des mines. A la Driefontein Gold Mine, un système de piliers de pendage proches les uns des autres est utilisé pour contenir les émissions d’énergie sismique. Au début, des comparaisons de donnés sismiques pour plusieurs groupes d’extraction ont indiqué un succès possible dans la limitation et l’occurrence d’évènements sismiques. Cependant, une analyse détaillée des données sur une période de 5 années a révélé un délai entre la progression de l’extraction et une réponse sismique accrue. Des changements considérables dans les variables sismiques ont été observés dans des intervalles d’extraction entre 100 et 120 mètres, ce qui pourrait être significatif pour l’espacement des piliers dans la conception de la disposition des mines de fond. Resultierend aus den zunehmenden Tiefen des Bergbaus in der südafrikanischer Goldbergbauindustrie stellt sich die vom Bergbau hervorgerufene Seismizität als bedrohliches Problem dar. Es war eine der Strategien innerhalb der Industrie, das Problem dadurch einzudämmen, daß regelmäßig plazierte Stabilisierungspfeiler in den Bergbaulayouts inkorporiert wurden. In der Driefontein Gold Mine wird ein System von knapp aneinandergesetzten im Abfallbereich befindliche Pfeiler benutzt, um seismische Energieemissionen einzudämmen. Vergleiche der seismischen Daten für mehrere Bergbaugruppen zeigten anfangs ein mögliches Maß von Erfolg in der Eindämmung und im Auftreten von größeren Fällen an. Eine ausführliche Analyse von Daten über einen 5jährigen Zeitraum hat jedoch ergeben, daß eine Verzögerung zwischen der Progression des Bergbaus und einer erhöhten seismischen Reaktion besteht. Bedeutende Änderungen in den seismischen Variablen wurden an Bergbauspannen von 100 bis 120 Metern beobachtet und könnten für Abstandsbemessung von Pfeilern im Design des Tiefbergbaulayouts von Bedeutung sein.

Eutectic freeze crystallization (EFC) is a novel technique for the recovery of pure salt and pure water from hypersaline waste brines. It is therefore a promising technology for the treatment of industrial waste waters. The impurities caused by crystallizing salt out of multi-component brines by EFC have not yet been investigated, however. To these ends, the selenium impurity found in sodium sulphate, produced from the waste brine of a platinum operation, was investigated. It was believed that the similarity between sulphate and selenate ions allowed isomorphous substitution of selenate ions into the sodium sulphate crystals, which was the likely cause of impurity uptake. It was found that the presence of sodium chloride in the industrial brine promotes the uptake of selenium, while ionic strength of the brine and mass deposition rate of sodium sulphate did not have a significant effect on the selenium uptake. Isomorphous substitution is predicted to be the most significant mechanism by which all impurities will be taken up when applying EFC to other industrial waste brines.
