The present state of knowledge on this subject may briefly be summarized as follows: (1) The copper content of the slag increases with the grade of the matte in contact with it; on the other hand, the proportion of copper lost decreases as the matte grade increases, because as a general rule a smaller volume of slag is produced when a high-grade matte is made. (2) The presence of CaO and MgO in the slag decreases the copper content of the slag, and the presence of ZnO increases it; the presence of A1203 seems to have little effect. The influence of the silicate degree is not yet clarified, but on theoretical grounds it seems likely that the copper content increases with the silicate degree of the slag. (3) High slag viscosity, high magnetite contents and low density difference between matte and slag all tend to increase the copper loss. The volume of slag is also an important factor. (4) The effect of bath temperature on the copper loss is not clear and further investigation of this point is needed. (5) It appears possible to recover a large part of the copper in the slag by adding FeS, CaS and other sulphides

Mining operations on the Witwatersrand are conducted for the most part in rocks of highly quartzitic character. They comprise the following types: Conglomerates, grits, and quartzites, to which on the Far East Rand must be added fine-grained quartzitic shales and shales. In addition, vein quartz occurring as small veins, veinlets and fissure fillings, and igneous rocks forming dykes, must be mentioned, although they constitute only a small percentage of the rock broken. The following is an account of the character and mineralogical composition of the various types.

The major deposits of anhydrite and secondary gypsum in Jamaica occur discontinuously at a single horizon within the Lower Eocene succession of southeast Jamaica. They are not intruded from other horizons of different age, as has previously been supposed. The gypsum and anhydrite occur in a regressive sequence at the junction between marine (Richmond Formation, Halberstadt Volcanics, Halberstadt Limestone) and overlying non-marine (Wagwater Formation) sediments. They are thought to have been formed in an arid supratidal (sabkha) environment. A variety of 'nodular' structures occurs in the gypsum and anhydrite which can be related to early diagenetic processes and compaction effects. All gradations exist between single isolated anhydrite nodules and structureless anhydrite due to closer packing and coalescence of nodules. The structures and textures in the anhydrite are thought to be consistent with penecontemporaneous formation from gypsum crystals rarely more than 2 cm in diameter. Single anhydrite nodules are not usually larger than 2 cm; nodules of greater size are compound, due to the coalescence of several smaller nodules. Some large compound nodules may have developed from single sand crystals or rosettes. Compaction of anhydrite appears to have been largely mechanical, but some rocks have an aligned fabric, suggesting later flowage

Several water treatment options have been studied and piloted. A process based on activity of sulphate reducing bacteria combines sulphate removal and heavy metal removal in one process step. The anaerobic bacteria reduce the sulphate to sulphide and consequently metal sulphides will precipitate. The final design for the commercial scale plant is described.

Mineral exploration carried out in Ireland since the mid-1950s has resulted in the discovery of ore deposits that are now in production atTynagh (Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag), Silvermines (Zn-Pb) and nearby Ballynoe (barite), and Gortdrum (Cu-Ag-Hg); a major Zn-Pb deposit at Navan that is now being drilled prior to development; potentially productive deposits at Keel (Zn-Cd-Pb), Ballinalack (Zn-Pb) and Aherlow (Cu-Ag); and a number of interesting prospects, including one of spodumene. Underground exploration of a formerly extensively mined copper deposit at Allihies has outlined new, albeit currently uneconomic, reserves at depth. The copper and pyrite deposits at Avoca have in recent years been re-explored and are now again being worked. Most Irish ore deposits are in the lower half of the Lower Carboniferous succession of limestones and subordinate shales and sandstones, and this stratigraphic zone is being most intensively explored at present. Other geological units under active exploration are Ordovician sediments-volcanics belts, Caledonian granites, and parts of the Old Red Sandstone and Dalradian series. Surface prospecting is made difficult in many places by glacial and other superficial deposits, including peat and alluvium. Geochemical prospecting methods have been outstandingly successful and primarily responsible for most new discoveries. Boulder hunting and outcrop prospecting have proved effective in detailed investigations of geochemically anomalous areas. Some parts of the country have been covered by three separate airborne geophysical surveys, albeit without success so far. The induced polarisation technique, the most widely used ground geophysical method, has contributed to several discoveries. The scope of application of electromagnetic surveys is more restricted than that of induced polarisation, but the method has been effective in a few cases and has contributed to the Tynagh discovery. To date, the resistivity and self-potential methods have found little application. Magnetic surveys are not applicable directly in the search for ore deposits of the various known types, but can be helpful in outlining geological structures in some areas. The gravity method has been used successfully in a survey over the Zn—Pb deposit at Navan ; it has also proved effective in trials over a blind sulphide deposit at Tynagh that cannot be detected with geoelectrical methods. The economic growth of Hong Kong and adjacent territories in Southern China is, to a considerable extent, dependant on air transportation, but the present Kai Tak Airport is incapable of expansion to meet future needs. After years of study, agreement was reached to build a new airport on the island of Chek Lap Kok, some 34 km remote from Hong Kong, with an ultimate capacity of 87M passengers and 8.9 Ml of cargo per annum. Apart from the building of the airport and its associated infrastructure (including a new town), other similar massive construction works have been necessary in the form of land reclamation from the sea and existing outer lying islands. The construction of bridges, tunnels, railways and highways are also an integral part of the project. The paper provides a broad overview of the concepts of the scheme (called The Airport Core Programme) and highlights some of the major operations and equipment being used in the projects, whose cost at 1992 prices was reckoned to he Hong Kong (HR)$l63hn.

There has been considerable effort in the UK, and more widely in the European Community, to formulate the best ventilation practices and other means of minimising these incidents. Practices and procedures to prevent ignitions are discussed in the light of the risks from current mining methods.

Sulphur isotope ratios have been determined for 81 sulphides and S and O isotope ratios for 26 barites from the Alston Block in the northern Pennine ore field. In addition, both isotope ratios have been determined for 29 evaporitic anhydrites of various ages from European and Australian localities. The consistency of the sulphate isotope ratios over a wide area of the northern Pennines, and their similarity to values for Lower Carboniferous evaporites, suggests that the sulphate originated from Lower Carboniferous connate waters. It is suggested that these mingled with warm brines rising through granitic plutons beneath Tynehead and Upper Weardale, the aqueous sulphide ion in these brines having a delta34S value of approximately +10 per mille. The delta34S values for the sulphides range from +15.0 to -5.9 per mille and show an outward zoning with higher values in the central fluorite zones and mainly negative values in the outer barite zones. The wide range of delta34S values for the sulphide S is not characteristic of magmatic S and there is no adequate local source in the Carboniferous sediments. It is suggested that formation waters, probably mainly of connate origin, sank down sufficiently deep to become heated above 200°C before rising through Caledonian granite plutons into the Carboniferous sediments, where they spread laterally to mingle with cooler sulphatic connate water. The rising fluids were hypersaline brines carrying F, Ba, Pb, Zn, Cu and S. Temperatures of deposition calculated from galena-sphalerite isotope fractionation are similar to temperatures previously determined from fluid inclusion studies.

The previous papers have been concerned only with the atmospheric oxidation of coals from the Barnsley Seam, for which it has been shown that an adequate explanation of the origin and nature of gob-fires can be based on the reaction between the coal itself and the oxygen of the air without the intervention of any other substance. It becomes of importance, therefore, to ascertain how far a similar explanation will hold good for spontaneous heating in other seams, and with this object in view samples including anthracite and lignite have been taken from a considerable number of pits in different parts of the UK (south Wales, Northumberland and Durham, north Staffordshire, Portrush and Ayrshire), some liable to fire, others not. There is abundant evidence to support the commonly-accepted view that spontaneous heating is due to the heat evolved during the absorption of oxygen from the air by coal or pyrites. The quantity of heat produced by the reaction has been measured and it has been shown that the observed rate of heating of a sample of coal agrees with the rate calculated from the heat of reaction and the rate of absorption of oxygen

The compositions of olivine, pyroxene and chromite from the Proterozoic ultramafic complex are analagous to those of cumulate ultramafic rocks of tholeiitic origin, suggesting that the parent magma may have been tholeiitic rather than komatiitic. The complex contains economically significant Ni-Cu sulphide mineralisation. The high sulphide/silicate ratio is best explained in terms of the segregation of sulphides from a large volume of magma, of which all but the ultramafic cumulate fraction has since been eroded. Platinum-group minerals that have been identified include sperrylite, moncheite, native platinum, froodite, merenskyite, michenerite and Pd-rich pentlandite lamellae exsolved from pyrrhotite. They are characteristically found in close association with chalcopyrite, either along the contacts between hydrosilicate and sulphide grains or in cracks within pentlandite and chalcopyrite, which may also be intergrown with galena. Crystallisation from a Cu-rich residual magmatic liquid also enriched in Pt, Pd, As, Sb, Bi, Te, Zn and Pb is postulated.

"The Koillismaa layered igneous complex is the result of igneous activity that occurred 2436±5 m.y. ago. Its crystallization took place in three separate but connected magma chambers, the total volume of which is estimated at more than 2000 km'. These chambers were located partly in a feeder system within Archaean granitoids and partly in an unconformity between these grani­ toids and Early Proterozoic supracrustal rocks. The composition of the parental magma that initially filled the chambers is thought to have been that of a relatively MgO-rich tholeiite. Sulphides and platinum-group minerals are mainly concentrated in the marginal series of the western part, where they are encountered over a distance of 25 km. This marginal series is an originally nearly horizontal series of rock types that displays a reversed differentiation trend, grading inwards from gabbroic to ultramafic rocks, followed bv rocks of the layered series. The chilled margin is not encountered anywhere in its original position at the contact, probably as a consequence of magmatic erosion, but remnants are to be found in the form of elongated xenoliths. Partly melted siliceous fragments from gneissic country rock typical of the lower part of the marginal series indicate pronounced contamination.Chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite±pyrite are the predominant sulphides. The accessory sulphide minerals include covellite, violarite, marcasite, mackinawite, sphalerite and argentian pentlandite. Platinum-group minerals are represented by froodite, michenerite, merenskyite and sperrylite. Other accessories that have been identified are electrum and native copper and gold. The mean of the Cu/(Cu+Ni) ratio in the mineralizations is 0.67 and Pt/(Pt+Pd) 0.31.It is suggested that the sulphide phase was formed in the marginal series as the solubility of sulphur in the basic magma was lowered by contamination, possibly assisted by some other factors. The sulphur isotope data support the juvenile origin of the sulphur."

Size-by-size partition curves for mineral separation in dense-medium cyclones pivot about a single characteristic point. This is defined for stable, non-segregating media by the medium density and the proportion of the medium reporting to the underflow. The pivot point departs from these values for unstable, conventional media. The phenomenon can be represented by an equation with two parameters defining pivot point coordinates and two the Ep value. On the basis of experiments in a 200 mm cyclone using ferrosilicon media, simple regression equations were developed for the separation parameters in terms of operating conditions (the coefficients were likely to be site-specific). The experiments successfully decoupled the effects of medium density and viscosity and showed that the value of Ep was independent of the former but strongly dependent on the latter. A classification model was used to predict the density of the underflow medium, a knowledge of which is required to determine the pivot parameters. The model correctly reflects the performance trends observed in dense-medium cyclone operation and has the potential to be generalised to a wide range of industrial practice.

Vapour pressures of sulphur have been measured over the temperature range 340-1039°C by means of boiling-point measurements, an internally heated pressure vessel being employed with argon as the pressure medium. The results are expressed satisfactorily by a four-term pressure-temperature relation. At the cited critical temperature of 1040°C the calculated critical pressure is 204 atm. From the pressure-temperature relation and available thermal data for the vapour, the approximate composition of the saturated vapour in terms of the various molecular species has been derived for the critical point

Discussion by B.P.J. Stevens of the paper, published in Trans. IMMA, vol.104, 1995, p.B1-B17, is presented together with the authors' response. Stevens questions the authors' radically different interpretation of the structural geology of the Broken Hill Block, considering that the descriptive part of the paper is a useful addition but that the conclusions are unwarranted on the basis of the data presented. A number of major points of disagreement are outlined and half a dozen additional minor points listed. In response, the authors admire Stevens's contribution to unravelling the geology of the area but defend their attempts to take the regional studies a step further, pointing out that he has misquoted what they wrote and arguing that because of the assumptions underpinning the derivation of the present stratigraphy it cannot be used to constrain structural models. With regard to shear zones, they cite the extensive earlier literature and refer to horizontal displacements shown on maps produced by Stevens et al. Detailed discussion follows of the stratigraphy and of the stratigraphic correlation problems resulting from failure to recognise the presence and significance of shears, particularly those parallel to stratigraphy. The remobilised position of the Pb mineralisation in the North Mine open cut is reiterated. It is concluded that there is an urgent need for systematic isotopic dating in the area to constrain the stratigraphy
