"Shovel buckets, scraper blades, dipper teeth, mine car wheels and hammermills are examples of equipment which require routine maintenance due to abrasion. Service life can be extended by the use 0/hard/acing and buildup materials. Mining and milling applications are described and field welding procedures discussed.A high-stress abrasion test used to select hard/acing and buildup materials/or hammers in a hammermill is described in detail. Field tests of the selected alloys confirmed their performance, and maintenance records showed a significant saving in down time and cost.The relationship between the abrasion resistance of the alloys and their hardness, work hardening, composition and microstructure is summarized. IntroductionLarge volumes of ore are handled daily by the mining industry. The abrasive nature of most ores results in extensive wear to both handling and processing equipment. If such wear is neglected it may cause lost production time and also, in extreme cases, require the complete replacement of expensive equipment. The well-planned maintenance of components subject to abrasive wear by means of buildup materials and hard facing can result in substantial economic benefits. Such benefits can , however, only be realized through the correct choice of welding process, consumables and deposition methods available to maintenance personnel. Hardfacing MethodsHardfacing is applied by a variety of methods; the three most widely used being arc welding, oxyfuel gas and thermal spraying. Table 1 summarizes the major processes used within each method. Filler metals in the form of rod, wire or powder are necessary to fulfill the individual requirements of each process. The filler rods are available in the cast form or, in the case of ductile metals or alloys, as wrought rod or tube. All types are supplied bare or flux covered. Wire is supplied in two forms, drawn flux cored and drawn solid. Powder filler metals are available in many metals or alloys; they may be simple mechanical mixtures or prefused and atomized alloys made to a specific size range and shape for optimum results for each applicable process."

When we apply the Au nanoparticle superlattices to the future nanooptical and nanoelectronic devices, the control of not only the particle size but also the interparticle spacing and symmetry of superlattice are the essential problems to be overcome. First, we developed a novel synthetic procedure to precisely control the particle size of alkanethiol-protected Au nanoparticles in the range from 1.5 to 9.7 nm by the heat-treatment of the small Au nanoparticles in the solid state. Absorption and nonlinear optical properties of alkanethiol-protected Au nanoparticle superlattices were then elucidated. On the other hand, the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) 2D superlattices of small Au nanoparticles with the interparticle spacings from 1.9 to 3.6 nm were successfully prepared by using newly-synthesized ligand for single electron tunneling devices. Finally, various symmetric superlattices, such as chain (2-fold), quasi-honeycomb (3-fold), square (4-fold), etc., of Au nanoparticles could be produced by making use of interligand interactions or some templates.

"The Nechalacho rare metal deposit is located in NWT, Canada. Avalon Rare Metals Inc. is now evaluating processing techniques for recovery of REE to be used in the industry. QEMSCANTM analysis coupled with whole rock, REE, Zr and Nb, and electron microprobe analyses were utilized to identify and quantify the mineralogy of the deposit, and define the REE distribution among minerals. QEMSCANTM mineralogy was performed on fifty intact drill samples using EXPLOMINTM that provided textural information for the mineralization; crushed samples were used to determine the variability of the ore and define REE domains, and composite samples to determine the liberation and association of the REE minerals. The sample matrix predominantly consists of biotite, feldspars, quartz, muscovite/clays, minor chlorite and amphibole, magnetite and hematite and carbonates. REE include in decreasing order of abundance allanite (3.6%), monazite (1.5%), synchysite (0.9%), columbite (0.9%), fergusonite (0.6%), bastnaesite (0.4%), and zircon 11.0%. The majority of the HREE are carried by fergusonite and zircon, and the LREE by monazite, allanite, synchysite and bastnaesite. QEMSCANTM mineralogical data is extremely valuable in assessing the mineralogy of the ore. The data have been implemented in defining the mineralogy of the ore body, support metallurgical test work, predict recoveries and grades, and finally calculate reserves of the deposit.INTRODUCTIONAvalon is in the unique position of owning and developing one of the world’s largest rare earth deposits in the Northwest Territories of Canada.The term Rare Earth Elements (REE) is used to describe the 15 lanthanide elements or metals and, more recently, the metals yttrium and scandium, which display similar physical and chemical properties. REE are not particularly rare and have a similar abundance in the earth’s crust to nickel, tin or tungsten. Unlike these better known metals however, the rare earths have little tendency to become concentrated into commercial ore deposits. When they do become concentrated, deposits of REEs usually display enrichment in one of two groups. The most commonly occurring deposits of REEs contain a sub-group of elements referred to as the “light rare earth elements” (LREEs), which include lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, and samarium. Less commonly, deposits of REEs contain the much more valuable sub-group of elements referred to as the “heavy rare earth elements” (HREEs), which include europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium and lutetium. Yttrium and scandium most commonly occur in association with this second HREE sub-group. Generally, LREEs are produced from the mineral bastnaesite, and the HREEs have been produced from the minerals xenotime and monazite. LREEs continue to be produced from bastnaesite, however in the 1980s, China started production of HREEs from unique laterite clay deposits. China now produces approximately 95% of the world’s rare earths."

A new thermal analysis technique has been developed and tested. It utilizes the enhancement in heat transfer characteristics associated with a recent advancement in heat pipe technology. Heat is extracted from a liquid sample of a melt taken in-situ within a vessel or furnace. The rate of heat extraction is such as to cause the sample to solidify. The technique was tested in both laboratory scale and industrial scale (Grenville Castings, Perth, Ontario). A 356 Al Alloy, subjected to various melt treatments was used to perform the tests. Classical thermal analysis was also performed simultaneously using a preheated graphite cup and at the same melt conditions. The comparison showed the potential of the new technique over classical thermal analysis. The major advantages of the new method are that it conducts the analysis inside the melt (i.e. a physical sample is not removed from the melt), it consumes less time and the cooling rate can be precisely controlled during the solidification process. "With the increase of shaft excavation depth, the thickness of the shaft lining increases sharply. It is difficult to reduce thickness of lining effectively by improving high-strength concrete performance. The concept of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is that surrounding rock plays a certain role in tunnel support. The solution should be to find the correct relationship between shaft lining thickness and rock strength, which is related with the interaction between the surrounding rock and concrete lining. The plane strain mechanics model is introduced to calculate lining thickness. Shaft lining design of Cixi Colliery in China is completed with the mechanics-based method proposed in this study. The lining design is verified through numerical simulation and field monitoring. The simulation results show that the maximum mises stress is located at the inner edge of the shaft lining. The increase of lining thickness cannot effectively reduce concrete grade. The monitoring results indicate that a lining design thickness of 900mm with C60 concrete, is safe and reliable in the shaft over 1000metres.This analytical design method can well be referenced in similar deep shaft projects.INTRODUCTION The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), thought to have helped revolutionize the modern tunneling method, is the most extensive design philosophy and construction principle in today's tunnel engineering. It began to attract attention in the 1960s based on the work of Ladislaus von Rabcewicz, Leopold Müller, and Franz Pacher in Austria[1]. NATM was originally developed for tunneling in depth and in high situ-stress conditions in the Alps. The history of sequential excavation was reviewed, which highlights the progress of tunnel design and construction in Europe after NATM[2]. Structural conditions were introduced into the equilibrium of tunnels in NATM, and the additional force was estimated to stabilize the excavation of the tunnel[3].From the perspective of applied mechanics, there was no accuracy theory to explain the interaction between the tunnel structure and the surrounding ground. "This paper presents the results of an industrial test using 8 t/d of Baotou concentrate (50% REO) of a clean metallurgical process, which includes: 1. Roasting with H2SO4 at low temperature (220~260 0C) in a batch roasting furnace followed by water leaching to obtain a leach liquor as feed with a yield of >95% RE and Th, recovering F as fluoride, producing a leach residue amounting to 1/3 of an equivalent high temperature residue and containing <0.03% Th and radioactivity < 3×104 Bq/kg compared to the normal high temperature residue containing 0.2-0.3% Th and 1×105 Bq/kg. 2. Separating Th with N1923 and extracting RE by P507 has been completed in mixer-settlers. Test results indicate that the ThO2 product has a purity of > 95% with a yield of 99%, and the RE has a yield of >95%, in which ThO2/REO <5×10-6, and that P507 loaded RE connect straight with separating RE using P507-HCl system. 3. Treatment and multipurpose use of "three wastes" (water, gas and solids) are discussed in some detail."

"Most of the minerals employed in Canadian refractory production are imported; in fact, most of the refractories consumed in Canada are imported. Whereas this situation is partly due to a definite shortage of suitable raw materials, e.g., fire clays, it is possible that the potential of certain mineral deposits which could be usefully exploited has not been recognized. There are exceptions, notably magnesite and dolomite, from which refractories are produced in Canada.In many cases, known mineral deposits are located either in inaccessible areas or in areas where transportation would be a major economic factor. This paper lists some minerals and their respective known deposits which could be employed in the production of refractories, irrespective of economics."

Two fabrication stages in the manufacture of pipelines are identified as causing significant deterioration of the steel plates, namely cold bending and welding. The objectives of this work include quantitative assessment of the degradation of the quality of the steel plate by the loss of fracture toughness, and an estimation of the safe working pressure. The study was conducted on three API grade steels: X42, X46 and X60. After cold bending by the UO technique, various welding technique were employed for joining of the bend plates along the pipe length. A crack-tip opening displacement parameter (CTOD) was used at the onset of initiation and at the first load maxima as the criterion for assessing the toughness degradation under various fabrication stages and regime (such as WZ, HAZ and parent body). In addition, strength, hardness and impact energy values were determined to check the degree of degradation. Microstructural and microfractographic investigation of the fractured samples were also carried out in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). X60 grade steel plate suffers from CTOD toughness loss by around 38 and 55% after welding and cold bending, respectively, for the conditions studied. A combined effect of the two stages results in a loss in toughness by around 70% for the same steel. In X42 grade, the loss in impact energy ranges from 78 to 35 J due to electrical-resistance welding study (ERW). Crack resistance curves are also obtained for the steels to study the crack growth resistance behaviour and to supplement the information on crack initiation behaviour. The orientation of the pearlite banding, as observed on the fracture plane with respect to notch front and applied loading direction appears to have a strong influence on the microvoid-coalescence mechanism of fracture as well as the toughness values. An integrated analysis of the performance of pipelines, considering all these key factors, is discussed.

RECENT events have emphasized with renewed force the well known fact that war greatly intensifies the demand for certain metals, particularly for iron, copper, and zinc. Any increase in the use of iron and steel, whether in war or peace, is also accompanied by increased consumption of those metals which find their chief application as ferro-alloys, such as nickel, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium. Further, since high temperatures are essential for the production of all these metals, activity in the metal industry is inevitably accompanied by an insistent demand for refractories. For example, in North American practice the consumption of magnesitic hearth refractories is frequently expressed in pounds per ton of steel. This quantity (not including straight dolomite) ranges on individual plants from about 7 to 12 pounds. When the industry is operating at approximately full capacity, the ratio of refractory to steel tends to increase, since the tonnage of steel produced is recognized as of paramount importance, and this leads to the harder driving of furnaces and less regard for the effect on refractories. It should also be observed that the cost of refractories per ton of metal produced is always so low, in comparison with other items, that it may even increase while the cost of metal per ton is being reduced through more continuous operation and the use of higher temperatures. As one prominent Canadian copper metallurgist has tersely expressed it, he is "not in business to save refractories but to smelt ore". The effect of war demands and of general industrial activity upon the production of basic and neutral refractories is clearly shown in Figure 1, which gives the value of chrome ore and magnesitic-dolomite produced in Canada during the period 1907 to 1937. Tonnages have not been shown, as these are not available for the full period; such figures as have been published from time to time are not strictly comparable, since both raw rock and finished products have on occasion been included. The preliminary figures for 1938, which are now available, have been prepared by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics on a different basis from those immediately preceding, and have therefore not been shown.

"The Kidd Creek concentrator is located twenty-six kilometres east of Timmins, Ontario, within a metallurgical complex including a 109,000 MTPY zinc plant and a new 59,000 MTPY copper smelter and refinery. A complement of 159 persons is employed in the operation of the concentrator.Ore from the Kidd Creek Mine is crushed underground to minus 15. 0 cm, then transported twenty-seven kilometres by rail 1:0 the concentrator. After being crushed to minus 1. 6 cm, the ore is further processed by grinding and flotation.The concentrator commenced operations in November of 1966 at a designed capacity of 8,200 MTPD. Two parallel flotation and grinding circuits treated copper-zinc ore (2.28% Cu, 5.63% Zn) and a third treated silver-copper-lead-zinc ore (230 g/MT Ag; 0.57% Cu, 0.88% Pb, 7.89% Zn).By 1975, the concentrator was treating 9,100 MTPD of ore. Seven concentrates were being produced, namely, high silve1: copper, low silver copper, lead, low silver zinc, high silver zinc, pyrite and tin.Planned minesite expansion to a second underground mine required increased concentrator throughput. Expansion of the concentrator enabling a thirty-three percent increase in copper-zinc ore throughput occurred during the period 1975 through 1978. This expansion included increased load-in capacity, major redesign in the crusher house, the addition of a fourth grinding and flotation circuit, the building of a fourth dryer, and numerous expansions of services."

"Next to the actual mine of Les Explorations Muscocho Ltée in Montauban, Quebéc, you could find a total of 364 000 tons of flotation tailings assaying 1.4 Au g/t et 82 g Ag/t to the south of the municipality. This tailings pile is what is left of previous operations. Preliminary leaching tests on these tailings in laboratory columns gave interesting results which led to tests in larger columns in 1984 and to a pilot test on a 750 ton heap in Montauban during the summer of 1985.This paper briefly describes the columns tests performed at the Centre de Recherches minérales and the heap leaching test designed and conducted by SOQUEM in Montauban. Laser-arc Hybrid Welding (LAHW) is a relatively recent concept which effectively combines the advantages of laser welding such as the high depth of penetration, low heat input, high welding speed and the positive aspects of arc welding such as better edge bridging and possibility to add filler. For example, steel sections upto 12 mm thickness have been successfully welded in a single pass at a welding speed of 1 m/minute using a 3.5 kW CO2 laser in combination with a MIG arc. Maraging steel of grade M250 is widely used in the aerospace industry in thicknesses upto 10 mm. Conventionally, it is possible to MIG weld such thicknesses in 3-5 passes employing V-Groove joint preparation. However, this multi-pass welding results in formation of reverted austenite in the weld zone after post weld aging; and the high heat input widens the reverted austenite containing heat affected zone which is popularly known as the dark zone/eyebrow zone. Both these zones are detrimental to strength of the welded joint, specifically the fracture toughness. The width of the dark band is an important factor because, thinner the band, it is supported more effectively by the surrounding material. Therefore, in order to avoid multi-pass welding and reduce the overall heat input, single-pass laser-MIG hybrid welding was attempted on 10 mm thick maraging steel M 250 plates using a hybrid laser arc welding system comprising a 3.5 kW CO2 slab laser and a MIG welding system. Simultaneously, multi-pass MIG welds also are produced. Both the laser-MIG hybrid and MIG welds are characterized microstructurally and subjected to mechanical tests such as tensile and fracture toughness in as-welded and post weld aged condition. The amount and distribution of reverted austenite in the fusion zone and width of the dark band was found to be different. Hybrid welds showed a narrow dark band zone and improved mechanical properties. Laser-hybrid and MIG welding investigations carried out on thick section maraging steel M 250 will be presented in detail, including microstructure, tensile properties and fracture toughness of the welds. To the best of the knowledge of the authors there are no reports on laser-MIG hybrid welding of maraging steels.

Introduction This paper deals with the operations and plant of the Craigmont Corundum Project, formerly of Wartime Metals Corporation but now under the Mines Section of the Resources Development Branch of the Department of Reconstruction and Supply. Corundum is recovered by the re-treatment of an old tailing deposit at Craigmont, Ontario. Crude concentrates so produced are shipped to the plant of the American Abrasives Company, Inc., at Westfield, Mass., for final processing and distribution to the abrasive industry. The plant was recently described in a paper entitled Craigmont Corundum which was presented by the writer before the Chicago meeting of the A.I .M.E. in February, 1946. General The Project is located on? lots 4 and 5, concession XVIII, township of Raglan, Renfrew county, Ontario, near the village of Combermere, which is on Highway 62. The property is about 135 miles from Ottawa. The general area enjoys a pleasant climate with moderate summer temperatures, though the winters are rather severe, the mercury frequently falling to - 35 deg. F. The excellent boating, fishing, and hunting have made the district a favourite resort for tourists. Lumbering is the main industry. Some farming is carried on, but the soil is poor and much of the land is hilly and rocky. There are no other operating mines in the immediate vicinity, though several &apos;industrial minerals&apos;, including mica, feldspar, nepheline, beryl, socialite, and others have been produced in the area. The district is drained by the York and Madawaska rivers and is generously dotted with large and small lakes. The general elevation is about 1,000 feet above sea level, though numerous hills rising several hundred feet give a rolling appearance to the landscape.

Self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers have demonstrated unparalleled performance internationally for the implementation of indirect heat transfer in severely fouling fluid environments. The ingenious configuration of recirculated cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube heat exchangers provides the ability to solve any problems that arise as a consequence of tube-side fouling during indirect heat transfer to process fluids or slurries. In most cases, the cleaning particles consist of chopped metal wire, however other process-specific materials have been used. In addition to the mitigation of fouling effects, a number of other significant benefits for slurry heating are afforded by the mode of operation of the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers. Increased turbulence at the slurry/tube interface is imparted by the action of the fluidised particles, resulting in very high heat transfers at relatively low liquid velocities. Furthermore, given the thixotropic nature of most process slurries, the action of the fluidised particles imparts additional shear to the process slurry, resulting in shear thinning effects with a consequent reduction in pressure drop and enhancement of heat transfer across the heat exchanger. The benefits provided by the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchanger make it the ideal option for the indirect heating of laterite nickel slurry for High-Pressure-Acid-Leach (HPAL) plants. This article explains the principle and application of the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchanger technology for the processing of laterite nickel and cobalt slurries in HPAL plants. It also presents an elegant method to revamp existing direct heated laterite nickel and cobalt processing plants into an indirect heated configuration employing self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers.

"Over the years, it has been increasingly difficult for the minerals industry to raise the necessary capital for its activities. To alleviate this phenomenon, complete transparency and capital market efficiency is needed. Since a company’s mineral resources and mineral reserves base is an essential component to obtaining capital, reporting these assets must also be transparent and efficient. This must occur, however, at an international level given that mineral industry operations, and its financing, are international. To achieve this, an international committee (i.e. Australia, Canada, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Europe, and the United States) was formed and has been developing standards for the reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves.The effectiveness of these standards, however, depends on adoption by the required regulators. Unfortunately, these standards have not been recognized by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Instead, the SEC adheres to its old standard (Industry Guide 7), making it increasingly expensive and difficult for international mining companies to obtain capital in the United States. Compounding the problem is the SEC’s influence over the current work of the International Accounting Standards Board and the International Organization Organization of Securities Commissions. These organizations are in the process of standardizing international accounting practices and international securities rules and regulations. Their current position may prevent adoption of the industry-developed mineral resources and mineral reserves standards which are internationally recognized."

Barrick Goldstrike mine utilizes a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit to simultaneously leach gold into solution with cyanide and adsorb the gold-cyanide complex onto activated carbon for further refinement. If the gold bearing ore contains a significant amount of native carbonaceous material, gold cyanide can be adsorbed at these sites instead of onto the desired activated carbon and the gold is effectively lost to tailings in a detrimental process known as "preg-robbing." The preg-rob effect is considerably reduced by treating the ore with a surfactant, which is hypothesized to adsorb to and passivate the native carbon surfaces. Past laboratory and pilot studies have consistently demonstrated significant gains in gold recovery after treating carbonaceous ore with surfactant. With success in bench and pilot scale testing, a plant trial was conducted at Barrick Goldstrike to evaluate the feasibility of using an alkoxylated fatty amine surfactant (Ethomeen T/12) to aid in the leaching of high preg-robbing ores. This paper analyzes the performance of the surfactant during the plant trial in addition to the problems that occurred during the trial period. Suggestions for improvement are also discussed.

"Carryover of caustic soda (NaOH) in the steam path caused catastrophic failure of superheater 304H stainless steel tubes in a steam generator and led to an unexpected shutdown after just five months of continuous service of petrochemical following the start of production. The cause of the failure was studied, with a focus on the formation of sigma phase in the weld joint and effect of caustic embrittlement on stress corrosion cracking (SCC). The cracks were examined at the seam weld, heat affected zone (HAZ), and Ubend areas. Hardness was measured for the base metal, HAZ, and weld metal, and microstructures were examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Crack initiation is attributed to gouging on the precipitated carbide at the HAZ and also the formation of sigma phase in the weld metal, as shown by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. In addition, cracking was propagated by caustic embrittlement because of residual stresses and hammering. Finally, the characteristic feature of fracture was illustrated by SEM fractography, and consists mostly of intergranular SCC and some quasicleavage transgranular. INTRODUCTIONThree key factors are needed for the initiation and propagation of intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC): a susceptible material, a corrosive environment, and sufficient stress. Although austenitic stainless steels are susceptible to sensitization and IGSCC, they are widely used in boiler and superheater tubes because of their high corrosion resistance, high oxidation resistance, acceptable mechanical characteristics at elevated temperatures, and low cost.Sodium hydroxide is injected to neutralize acidic constituents in the steam path, but caustic can concentrate in boiler tubes and attack the surface metal (known as gouging) even traces of caustic in the steam can deposit on surfaces and cause local concentrations of several percent (ASM handbook, 1992). Not only sensitized grains but also sigma phase formed in the weld metal can initiate caustic cracking. In this research, the cause of the failure of 304H stainless steel superheater tubes in a methanol petrochemical plant in Iran was studied with a focus on the effects of caustic embrittlement on IGSCC."

"Following initial discovery in 1991, BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc. opened Canada’s first diamond mine, the EKATI Diamond Mine (EKATI) in the Northwest Territories on October 14, 1998. Four short years later, on November 29, 2002, saw the opening of North America’s first underground diamond mine, the Koala North mine. Nestled between the original Panda open pit and the new Koala pit, which is in the early stages of production, Koala North represents the only underground kimberlite mining venture in Arctic conditions outside the new underground mines being developed by ALROSA in the Yakutsk region of eastern Russia. Extensive underground kimberlite mining has been practiced in the Republic of South Africa for much of the 20th century and continues today.Underground mining represents a key component of the long-term business plan for EKATI. As various open pits reach their economic limit, continued recovery of high-value ore at depth is dependent upon the ability to productively mine the kimberlite pipes by underground methods. As a function of its location, size, and value, the Koala North pipe is ideally positioned to host the first underground mine at EKATI. Koala North is designed and approved as a learning mine, from which to gain valuable experience in preparation for the potential mining of other larger, higher value pipes by underground methods in the development, the Koala North mine is well into its production ramp-up phase and currently producing at around 1,200 t/day from the first two production levels."

Environmental desulphurization is an attractive alternative for the management of acid generating tailings. Bulk sulphide flotation is the most commonly used method to produce desulphurized tailings, as shown from many previous works. This process can reduce the volume of problematic tailings to manage by making a sulphide fraction concentrate. The desulphurized tailings can then be used as construction material for an engineered cover to prevent acid mine drainage. In this paper, the results from different laboratory and pilot scale flotation tests are presented. These results confirm that low sulphide non-acid generating tailings can be produced by froth flotation. It is also demonstrated that sulphide concentrates obtained from desulphurization mixed with the appropriate binders can be used as feed material for paste backfill. From previous work on the evaluation of operating and capital costs of the desulphurization process for different ore types, the use of desulphurization as a tailings management approach was studied for several scenarios. The desulphurization process was then compared with other technologies (underwater disposal, engineered soil cover) currently used to prevent acidic drainage (AD) for a new mining operation. Results show that partial or total desulphurization are technically and economically viable options to manage tailings during mine operation. Mine waste managers should consider desulphurization as an efficient technology.
