DESPITE the tremendous drop in the volume of domestic production of metals, their prices, and profits, the world as a whole has managed to produce and consume nearly as much as in 1937. Measured by production, 1937 was the record year for copper, lead, and zinc. The Copper Institute figures for 1938 (estimating December as equal to November) show that although apparent domestic consumption declined 309,422 tons, foreign consumption increased 133.035 tons. The total for 1938 was 1,971,790 tons compared with 2,148,177 tons for 1937. The domestic decline was 38.5 per cent, the foreign increase 9.9 per cent, and the total decline 8.2 per cent.

Demand for eastern magnetite in 1948 necessitated practically all eastern magnetite industries to operate on a six-day week, with the result that over 11,000,000 long tons of crude ore were mined, and the shipping products amounted to approximately 5,000,. 000 long tons. Reports indicate that operating on a six-day week and doing maintenance work on the seventh day was satisfactory and resulted in excellent continuity of operation. In the Port Henry district, Republic Steel Corp. once again set new all-time records for the production of crude ore and total shipping product; 1,868,000 long tons of crude ore were mined, 945,000 from the Old Bed mine, 408,500 from the Harmony mine, and 514,500 from the Fisher Hill mine. Of the 969,000 long tons of shipping products, 663,800 long tons were sinter, 181,000 lump ore, and 115,200 con¬centrates.

Do you know that valuable clues to the geology and mineralization of a district can be found in a handful of sand from a stream bed draining the area? This handful of sand has a story to tell to those who have a little patience. The handful of sand may contain tiny specks of valuable minerals (gold, scheelite, cinnabar, chromite, tourmaline-to mention a few), that will lure you upstream with the hope of uncovering a new deposit. More practically, this handful of sand can indicate the type of rocks that are exposed by the drainage system. Any mineral that has a specific gravity of 3.5 or higher can be separated from soil by panning. Garnet and pyrite, for example, can indicate an outcrop of metamorphic rock. In one district where the writer prospected, small boat-shaped orthorhombic crystals of topaz always indicated the presence of andesite outcrops.

OPPORTUNITY may not be knocking but it, at least, is waiting for you, your family and your friends in that amazing republic south of the Rio Grande. For the first time we are able to publish the official itinerary for the forth-coming Mexico City meeting of 1936. As shown on Page 351, the deluxe special train leaves St. Louis on Thursday. Nov. 5 at 5:30 p.m., returning to St. Louis on Nov. 18 at 8:15 a. m. The schedule provides seven days and six nights in Mexico City with numerous excursions to nearby towns and resorts. The oldest surviving city in' North America is Mexico City, dating back at least to the twelfth century. It was the Aztec capital when Cortez arrived in 1519. The famous cathedral still standing was built on a foundation of sculptured Indian images and the remains of a great Aztec temple. Today it is a city of romance.

Victor G. Hills, Cripple Creek, Colo. (communication to the Secretary): In continuation of the subject of the perform ance of "baby machine-drills," presented by Mr. Thane, I sub mit the following records of work done with these drills in the Cripple Creek district of Colorado. Two years ago, the Anchoria-Leland mine began to use baby drills ; and, to make the experiment more complete, began by purchasing two machines, of the same size, but of different make. The little drills were first used for stoping and up raising, in which they achieved at once an unqualified success. Soon after, they began to be used for the smaller branch-drifts and prospecting cross-cuts, while the large two-man drills were still used for the main drifts. Now they have almost entirely superseded the large drills, since it has been found that they will do any ordinary work in the mine at less cost, both for labor and for powder, per ton of rock broken. The large drills, of course, make more rapid progress; but it is only where time is a specially important factor that they are now used. The Portland mine, where, until within a year, only the large machines were used, is now using some small drills for stoping, and also for drifting. Mr. Thane speaks of having two men to operate a baby-drill; but in this district the baby-machine is always worked by one man without help. Again, in Prof. Christy's postscript, the quoted extract from a letter of Mr. L. T. Seymour, the South African engineer, mentions a " 2 1/2-inch Little Giant," as though that were the smallest machine used in that region. These statements leave some doubt as to just what Mr. Thane means by a " baby-drill." To avoid any such uncertainty as to the present communication, I will say that the large or two-man drill in common use at Cripple Creek has a 3 1/8-inch cylinder; while a few mines employ a 3-inch, and a few, in running large tunnels, a 3 1/2-inch drill. Minerals are the basis of modern civilization: their exploitation and effective utilization are a yard- stick for measuring the comparative prosperity of different nations. This is particularly true in India where industrialization is just beginning to pick up speed. Production targets for our Fourth Five Year Plan (1966-71) are far ahead of the figures for, say, 1950 (the year we won independence) and show the extent of the expansion. Many problems remain to be solved, not least of which is the shortage of raw materials. India is no novice at utilizing minerals. Archaeological ruins at Harappa and at other historical places in the country show evidence of the fact that the ancient Indians not only knew the art of winning minerals from the ground over 6000 years ago-they were also well acquainted with metallurgy. Some of the present sites of mineral exploitation are the same as those our ancestors worked for many centuries.

PERHAPS the matter of greatest interest to all mining men at the present time is the question of income and excess profits taxes on mines. Every producing mine in the United States is called upon to render to the government an account of its operations and to pay a graduated tax upon its earnings. It is manifestly a matter in which every mine owner, every stockholder in a mining corporation, every mining and metallurgical engineer, every person employed by a mining company and every one engaged in an industry which in any way depends upon the continued operation of our mines or who consumes their products is financially, to a greater or less extent, involved. In view of this fact it is surprising to see how little attention is paid to it and how few of our members have taken the pains to investigate and understand the provisions of recent enactments by Congress and the ways in which these enactments are being applied to mining industries.

COAL preparation will be the main topic discussed at the first fall meeting of the Coal Division at Pittsburgh, Sept. 11, 12 and 13, though valuation, mergers, safety, stream pollution and other topics will not' be neglected. It is particularly appropriate that the great changes taking place in preparing coal for the market should be discussed at length where in the plants of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. and others the opportunity is afforded to see on a large scale just what is being accomplished. In wartime, the United States broke all records in coal production, but, as the late Franklin K. Lane pointed out, every fifth car shipped consisted of dirt. Obviously that constituted a big bur- den on industry and, in the remaking of the business which is now taking place both in the anthracite and bituminous fields, clean coal has properly enough be- come a watchward. Central coal-cleaning plants are being erected as a part answer to the puzzled inquiry of those familiar with metal mining as to why miners of coal have so long been content with what are relatively small units of production. Gradually big collieries comparable in tonnage output to the biggest copper mines are being built, and excellent examples are to be seen near Pittsburgh. A NEW and interesting type of drier has been developed and operated at the Magna plant of the Utah Copper Co. for the past year for the drying of a filtered concentrate in the molybdenum recovery plant of this company. The several units installed have ranged from 12 to 30 in. in width, and from 14 to 30 ft. long. Their economy was immediately apparent after the first one was installed. The machine is not only low in capital cost, but has proved efficient for the drying of fine concentrate at low operating cost. The Utah vibrating drier consists of a steel conveyor trough supported on flexible reeds from a structural steel foundation anchored in concrete. The steel pan, which is also the drying surface, is vibrated by a heavy Utah electromagnetic vibrator fastened either to the head or discharge end of the pan. The vibration thus obtained agitates the material and causes it to be conveyed over the heated surface.

THE American oil 'industry has reached the critical stage where the demand exceeds the supply with no hope of permanently bettering the situation through the development of new fields in the United States. Remedies may be sought along three lines: 1. Securing a foreign source of supply. 2. Curtailment of the use of oil and its derivatives. 3. Improvement in methods of recovery (including the recovery of shale oil), refining, and utilization. The oil companies with proper government support will push the acquiring of foreign territory; the price of oil and oil products will enforce a curtailment in use; it remains for the producers and refiners to brings about improvements and economy in recovery, transportation and refining; the general public must be instructed in utilization. The solution of the problem, therefore, rests largely in the hands of the technologists of the industry -the drillers, engineers, geologists, chemists, etc. Only through an exchange of the ideas of the individuals who are conducting the industry will its technology be advanced. , Among the agencies at work to bring about this result are the United States Bureau of Mines, the American Petroleum Institute, and the A. I. M. E. The Bureau of Mines has a trained staff of experts, maintains experiment stations and a field force of technologists, and issues many technical papers helpful to the industry. The Petroleum Institute is a clearing house for useful statistics and is now. organizing a research division under the able direction of Doctor Manning, but its principal field of activities is in the realm of co¬ordinating ?the financial and commercial activities of the` oil' companies.' It remains for the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to organize the individual technologists of the industry and provide them with means of exchanging and disseminating ideas through meetings and publications. It is the aim of the Petroleum Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to foster this exchange of ideas among oil men by enlarging the membership of the Institute among the field and office technical forces of the oil companies and thus arouse their interest in the vital problems of the oil business.

Ira B. Joralemon, one of the world's most noted mining geologists, died last year at the age of 91. "His long professional career," says Donald H. McLaughlin, chairman of the executive committee at Homestake Mining Co., "covered an epoch in the history of mining that was unique in its opportunities and achievements," adding that many mining companies (Bunker Hill, Bralorne Mining, Copper Range, Anaconda, Newmont, Phelps Dodge, Homestake, etc.) greatly benefited from Joralemon's experience and wisdom.

INCREASED production and con¬sumption of all metals, indicate the progress of industry toward that condition formerly thought to be normal. With no market limitations on silver and gold the two new precious-metal mines, the Silver Queen (now the Golden Queen), in southern California, and the Sunshine, at Kellogg in northern Idaho have made progress toward a high routine production. The Golden Queen 300-ton mill is finished and ready. The Sunshine mill has been enlarged and production is now at the rate of 500 tons per day of high-grade silver ore. The Hecla Mining Co. is developing the Polaris vein, which should be the extension of the Sunshine to the east. Some rich ore is reported. The developments of the' East African Gold Fields, Ltd., in the Lupa gold field of Tanganyika Territory, have made good progress, but operation in an isolated locality is not rapid and a large plant will be required. There have been no other discoveries reported that can be compared with the three mentioned, but production has increased, with greater capacity in dredging equipment and underground mines more adequately prepared for production.

ERLE VICTOR DAVELER, who in his application for membership in the Institute in 1909 modestly described himself as "millman," was born at Denver in 1885 and graduated from the University of California in 1907. After a few months' work at gold mills in California he went to Tonopah, where for the next two years he had a varied experience working on pumps, convey- ors, tube-mills and filters. For the following two years he was experimental foreman and metallurgical engineer for the Utah Copper Co. at Garfield. He was sent in 1911 to be assistant superintendent of mills at the Ray. From 1913 to 1917 he was mill superintendent at the striking but unsuccessful experiment in large-scale low-grade gold mining of the Alaska Gold Mines Co.

THE common method of shale mining, drilling, shooting and steam-shovel loading, is fast giving place to a comparatively new method which is purely mechanical. This machine is known as the shale planer and takes a cut from a very large face, 50 ft. or more in height. As shale deposits are usually stratified, the quality varying with the stratification, a very uniform product is obtained with this planer, for its "cut" is across the entire face, vertically. This planer was designed and built some 15 years ago by J. M. Powell, president of the Indiana Drain Tile Co., Brooklyn, Ind. Unevenness in mixing the material from the different layers in the shale deposit of this company was causing considerable fluctuation in the firing- shrinkage and color of the ware produced, thus lowering the quality. Some method of maintaining a uniform proportion was vital and this planer was therefore devised. Its capacity was approximately 175 tons daily: cut, mixed and loaded.

THE technical sessions at the Regional Meeting of the A.I.M.E. in San Francisco are to be de- voted LO changes, current or predictable, which may be expected to alter today's practices in mining and metallurgical engineering. Our present condition may be summarized as follows: Capacity to produce is excessive for domestic needs in molybdenum, copper, iron, and oil; sufficient in lead, zinc, and potash; deficient in aluminum, manganese, tungsten, chromium, and tin. Gold and silver are complicated by their use as money. Or, to look at it in another way, the "growth curles" of production, as C. K. Leith emphasizes, characteristically rise slowly at the beginning, show a second stage of rapid growth, and a third stage of leveling off. The third stage is already reached here in coal. copper, iron, lead, and zinc. But still in the second slage are oil, molybdenum, potash, and others.

A NOTABLE feature of the practice of the American mining engineer is the fact that 'his field has been world wide, and the results of his work may be found in all countries. For this reason, the mining engineer is particularly interested in any legislation tending to restrict his freedom in this respect. In their zeal to improve the status of the professional engineer, those responsible for the enactment of the registration laws now in effect in various of the United States may have introduced a practice that will result very much to the detriment of the American mining engineer. He is preeminently interested in the maintenance of the professional "open door," and fame may be the reward of him who calls the first "International Conference for the Limitation of Restrictive Legislation." There is no reason why these United States should be the only country to regulate the practice of professional engineering and, in fact, the movement is spreading beyond its borders. Already, it is necessary for the mining engineer to be thoroughly conversant with the various state laws in order to insure his right to pursue his calling. It may soon be necessary for him to make sure of his status in foreign countries before undertaking work in them.
