Leonard and Newman (1989) describe concepts and plans of their forthcoming project designed to increase the bulk density of broken coal at various stages of its production and handling. This is an excellent idea and something that will certainly be useful to the coal mining industry worldwide. The authors seek to achieve bulk density increase by "reducing oreliminating, through chemical additives and engineering design, particle voidage and enhance particle consolidation trickling between the point of breakage (at the face) and loading (in the shuttle car) to increase coal bulk density and productivity." In the paper, they present some supporting results of bulk density versus moisture, with or without oil addition, from the steel industry research. Unfortunately, the paper contains many misconceptions and half-truths that detract from an otherwise excellent objective of the project of increasing bulk density by reducing particle voidage -"the bottom line evaluator." With the growing dependence on coal as an energy source, finding a means to prevent or reduce the freezing of coal during winter shipment has become increasingly important. Several chemical companies focused on this problem and applied chemical technology to develop suitable solutions. As a result, a number of freeze conditioning agents have been introduced in the past few years, several of which have been highly effective in controlling frozen coal. The efficacy of these chemicals has been well established, however many users have found that only a well defined program will produce acceptable results at a reasonable cost. Positive program results yielding recognizable benefits have caused many power generating and coking plants to consider freeze conditioning agents. A freeze conditioning agent (or FCA) has been defined as a multi-component organic liquid designed to be sprayed on coal particles at bulk shipping points to assure that receiving locations will be able to unload, store and use the treated coal with minimum delay or inconvenience. The chemicals are generally applied at rates of 1 to 2 pints (0.473 to 0.946 liters) per ton and normally function by changing the crystalline structure of water left on the coal during processing. The bond strength of the ice that may subsequently form is markedly reduced. Instead of freezing into solid, unmanageable masses, the coal can be easily unloaded by rotary dumping or the opening of hopper car doors.

The use of heavy media organic solvents to recover coal from its attendant gangue is hardly new. DuPont built a pilot plant using pentachloroethane in 1936 at Weston Coal Company, Weston Breaker, Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. That's almost half a century ago. Since that time, it has become common practice to utilize similar classes of chemicals in laboratory separations of coal samples. It is the objective of this paper to discuss some specific separations on both pilot and laboratory scale on samples representing different classifications of coal. These separations have been carried out on coarse (+4 M), middling (4 x 20 M), and fine (-20 M) coal samples. The coal samples tested include Pennsylvania anthracite; Pennsylvania, Indiana and Colorado bituminous; Wyoming sub-bituminous; and Texas lignite. Other chlorinated solvents were used to vary the specific gravity of separation.

Coal mining has been an important industry in the Appalachian area for many years. This is particularly true in the northern part of the area, namely, in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. Also, in the south a great deal of mining activity has been carried on in Alabama, Kentucky, and southwest Virginia. Some of the by-products of this activity has been the production of mineralized water from the mines in copious quantitites. The southern Appalachians have been somewhat more fortunate in that the water there has had a considerable amount of alkalinity in it, which has to a large extent eliminated some of the more undesirable aspects of mine drainage. Northern Appalachia, including central and western Pennsylvania, the Monongahela basin in West Virginia, and the Appalachian area in eastern Ohio have not been so fortunate in that coals in those areas and the top and bottom rock have, in many cases, shown considerable quantities of pyrite, and the water does not carry the carbonates found farther south.

The major goal of this study is to decrease iron content in wet-process phosphoric acid. Reducing the amount of post-precipitated sludge in the acid is another important objective in this investigation. In order to achieve these goals, research efforts have focused on bench scale testing of an iron-chelating reagent to remove iron from phosphoric acid produced from South Florida high-iron and -magnesium phosphate concentrate, and plant testing using freshly produced concentrated acids for reducing the post- precipitated sludge. The data obtained in the above studies suggest that the addition point of the precipitating reagent is very important, as the precipitated iron compound has higher solubility at higher P2O5 concentrations. Up to 60% Fe2O3 removal efficiency is achieved depending on the amount of the reagent, concentration of acid used, and operating conditions. The addition of precipitating reagents to freshly concentrated phosphoric acid leads to a decrease of up to 84% in sludge volume percentage depending on acid type and clarification conditions. Decreasing the volume percentage of the sludge facilitates acid handling as well as decreases the adherent water- soluble P205 leading to lower total P2O losses.

"INTRODUCTION Many major cities in the United States have a combined storm water and sanitary sewer network. Regular rainfall overwhelms the system capacity and results in millions of cubic meters of untreated sewage being dumped into local waterways. One legally mandated solution includes several kilometers of large diameter shallow or deep rock or soil tunnels, a pump station as well as associated collection sewers, diversion structures and drop shafts. In this paper, the basis for design of different system elements including the drop shafts and pump station is explained in detail. Common construction methods used for different type of shafts including tangential vortex and baffle plunge, and also pump station alternatives comprising cavern or various shaft configurations are discussed. DIFFERENT TYPES OF PUMP STATIONS The dewatering pump station serves as the heart of any deep CSO tunnel system and is critical to the goal of reducing CSOs by providing a controlled release of the stored tunnel volume to the wastewater treatment plant. As the major mechanical component of the project, the station will require the greatest attention by operations and maintenance staff. Designing a durable and easily operated pump station requires addressing some major challenges, including the following: • Longevity – equipment, materials of construction, and station environment • Controlling odors • Safety for operators and maintenance personnel • Easy access to equipment • Protection from hydraulic surges Location. Owners face a fundamental decision relative to the location of the pump station, which will affect how these challenges are addressed. The pump station can be built within the tunnel launch shaft or within its own dedicated shaft. This decision is driven by cost and schedule. Use of the tunnel launch shaft may provide owners cost saving opportunities by not having to construct a separate pump station shaft. However, this will likely extend the pump station construction as much as two years until the tunneling has been completed. Furthermore, delays to the tunneling operation would delay the pump station construction work, potentially leading to delay claims. For this reason, it has been more common to utilize a separate pump station shaft on recent CSO tunnel projects (Nasri et al. 2015)."

INTRODUCTION This paper presents (1) modified slipform system which was employed for simultaneous concrete placement for permanent lining and Instruction of a partition wall in the execution of a ventilation shaft 620m deep, and (2) current shaft sinking techniques which have been applicable and efficient for the subsurface conditions in Japan. MODIFIED SLIPFORM SYSTEM FOR PERMANENT LINING OF VERTICAL SHAFT General Information This paragraph deals with rapid construction by using modified slipform system for the permanent concrete lining and a partition wall of ventilation shaft, which has inside diameter of 620m and depth of 620m, of Enasan Highway Tunnel. The general feature of the shaft is illustrated in Fig. 1 and standard section of the shaft is illustrated in Fig. 2. The geological condition surrounding the shaft is mainly of ryolite and surface is of talus, but as a whole, they are rather weak and weathered rocks with faults, fissures and clay seams. 220mm borehole for the geological investigation was used as a drainage hole, predicting the amount of water inflow into the shaft to be 10t/min. The shaft was executed mainly by means of the conventional short step sinking method of 1.2m lift, employing temporary headframe and hoists. For each lift, 40 to 50cm thick temporary concrete lining was used. About 28,600m3 of rocks were excavated and

Ground pillar control in soil and weak rock often represents a critical and sometimes a determining factor for mined underground civil structures. A concept is desirable that minimizes the restrictions possibly imposed by pillar control requirements on geometrical tunnel characteristics and on the mining operation itself. Conventional concepts are discussed and an alternative concept is introduced. This concept reduces pillar control requirements to ground control measures required with "regular" tunnels. The conventional model of pillar mechanics with potential yielding of a ground body in more than one direction, is then avoided. Due to the complexity of pillar mechanics, the level of engineered design furnished to the contractor is crucial to optimizing ground pillar control. Conventional versus alternative contractual arrangements for pillar control are described and their important role is illustrated. The concept introduced relates to principles inherent to the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). However, tunnel projects using other mining concepts can employ alternative ground pillar control principles as well, if certain criteria are observed. Case histories in the United States and abroad are presented and the impacts from different concepts of ground pillar control are illustrated. The paper concludes by analyzing concept characteristics that can infer monetary impacts on both the owner and the contractor.

Virtually no two mines operate with the same geographic, geologic, and mining conditions. It follows chat problems vary with the conditions from mine to mine or often from one section to another in the same mine. Actual situations are described, and a technique of "stacking" maps to predict hazards is presented. Two case histories of the use of multiple overlays are de- scribed. The first deals with a property that was examined before the start of mining. The second is a property in which severe ground control problems were encountered and the relationship between the problem areas and known conditions were found to be related.

The debut of the sustainable development concept in the political arena, and the publication of Our Common Future in 1987, represents the starting point of present concerns and efforts associated with the sustainability of the ecosphere and its ecological and human subsystems. The sustainable production and consumption of natural resources, in particular mineral resources, represents a central aspect of the problem. In this context, an important goal has been to develop sophisticated management systems, which consider sustainability principles, in organizations within the system of minerals and metals (SMM). The development of indicators is only part of this challenge. The extractive industries (EI) as an important stakeholder of the SMM (should) have similar priorities. If embraced, this challenge offers great opportunities, one of them being the potential for advancing the understanding of how these organizations learn and change. The identification of its main determinants offers, in theory, the possibility for their management and a faster achievement of the sustainability levels to which they (should) aspire.

The Oglebay Norton Company has traditionally been a supplier of metallurgical grade fluorspar gravel to the American steel industry and, in the early sixties, fluorspar pellets were entered into the market. The gravel has been imported from Mexico, the pellets were produced by the Minerva Company in southern Illinois. While the acceptance of the pellets by the industry was satisfactory, overall marketing considerations caused the Minerva Company to discontinue the pelletizing operations. Thus it was that Oglebay Norton came to the decision to revive earlier plans to produce fluorspar agglomerates. A survey of the market and related factors led into two basic conclusions: 1) Because of steel plant safety considerations, flat, pillow- shaped briquets were preferable to easily rolling, marble-like pellets. 2) Briquets competitive with gravel could be produced by cutting imported, low-duty, acid grade spar to metallurgical grade by limestone and binders. A plant was built in Brownsville, Texas, and started operations in early 1970.

Lack of visibility from cabs of the large haulage trucks used in open-pit mines has become a serious safety problem. This Anaconda research program was conducted to develop a low-cost system for alerting haulage truck operators of the presence of small vehicles in their blind areas. Several systems, developed and tested to help solve this problem, are summarized and evaluated in this paper. As the size of the haulage trucks used in large open-pit mines has increased, so have the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup tucks and cars become concealed within these blind areas and, thus, become a serious safety hazard. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 150-ton haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are those at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. It is within these areas of "no visibility" that numerous small vehicles over the years have been crushed by the large haulage trucks at various mine sites. Although the occupants in most instances, have escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed, injuries and deaths have occurred. The accidents, in most cases, were attributed to negligence or carelessness on the part of the driver of the smaller vehicle, but the problem of limited visibility still exists, and a solution is needed.

Introduction Millions of tons of coal are shipped by rail each year in the US. Loading those trains efficiently is a topic being studied by coal producers and railroads. Alternatives range from volumetric loadouts to systems that weigh the product, using either belt conveyor scales, track scales, or weighbins. Each system has its proper application and each has pros and cons, depending on the volume, nature, and layout of the specific loading facility. In recent years, a batch weighing system has been developed that offers significant benefits to higher volume operations shipping by a unit train. The Unitrain Loadout System (ULS) features a precision electronic batch weighing system married to a mechanical loadout system by a microprocessor-based digital control system. A batch weighing loadout could be designed using analog electronics or even a mechanical weighbin. But it is the adaption and use of a microprocessor that provides the primary benefits of a unit train loading facility. Those benefits are accurate weight determination, optimum car use, overload prevention, speed in loading, optimum labor use, and documentation of the loading process. Unitrain History The first ULS was erected for iron ore applications in Canada during the 1960s. The first domestic system on coal was installed at Pittsburg and Midway Coal Co.'s McKinley mine at Gallup, NM, in 1978. At present, there are more than 20 Unitrain Loadout Systems in operation worldwide. They are loading minerals, concentrates, and coal. Eleven systems are presently in service or under construction in the US. In the last several years, a number of comparable systems have also been installed. As a result, the concept has been well proven and is now commercially available from several sources. Unitrain Operation The basic operation of a ULS involves loading a unit train with individually weighed batches of coal while it moves slowly under a loadout tower. Typical coal systems are designed to load at rates of 2.7 to 6.3 kt/h (3000 to 7000 stph). The contents of each car can be accurately weighed. This meets the requirements of the National Bureau of Standards Handbook No. 44 for static weighing. Also, cars can be loaded within very close tolerances. This optimizes railcar usage and prevents overloads. Principal components of the loadout system are the main feed conveyor, the surge bin, surge bin gates, weighbin, weighbin gate, flood loading chute, control room, calibration weights, and hydraulic and electrical systems (Fig. 1). Main feed conveyor: Coal is delivered from a storage area by the main feed conveyor. The conveyor fills the surge bin. It should be capable of conveying coal at the same rate at which it is being loaded. Usually the feed conveyor is equipped with a conveyor scale that can display rate in the control room and control feed to the belt. The surge bin will typically store 227 to 272 t (250 to 300 st) of coal. If the loadout is installed in an over-the-track silo, there is no need for a surge bin. Four double-bladed, hydraulically actuated gates are incorporated into the bottom of the surge bin. These gates open to fill the weighbin. Automatic pre-act points are selected by the control system. They shut these gates as the desired weight is approached. The final amount of coal is added by a single gate that closes. This results in a weighed batch of coal within ± 0.5% of the selected optimum load per railcar. Thus, if loading 91-t (100-st) capacity cars, the system is set to batch up 90.2 t (99.5 st) batches. Variations in designs between belt cleaner systems are so wide that it is impractical to establish a dimensional stan- dard. The number of variables that affect the efficiency of belt cleaners is too great to assume a required number or style of cleaners for broad classifications of bulk solids or typical applications. The amount of carryback remaining on the belt is more dependent upon the characteristics of the bulk solid and the physical parameters of the conveyor system than it is on tonnage of material conveyed. Therefore, a performance-based standard is proposed. Three levels of cleaning performance are proposed: • Level I cleaning is general specified when concerns about carryback are not critical. Cleaning systems normally associated with achieving a Level I performance are single or double cleaner systems with one-piece blades undergoing poor to average maintenance. Frequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will likely be required. • Level II cleaning is generally specified when carry- back is of concern but does not create a safety or environmental problem. Cleaning systems normally associated with Level I1 performance are multiple cleaner systems with segmented blades undergoing the manufacturer's specified maintenance. Regular but infrequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will likely be required. • Level III cleaning is generally specified when con- cerns about carryback are critical. Concerns range from safety to environmental to product contamination. Cleaning systems normally associated with achieving a Level 111 performance are multiple cleaner systems in conjunction with at least one low- volume water spray. Scheduled inspection and the manufacturer's specified maintenance would have to be performed to maintain a high level of cleaning performance. Difficult-to-clean bulk materials may require the use of a washbox system with multiple cleaners using a combination of low-volume eater sprays to lubricate the cleaners and high-volume sprays to keep the washbox and discharge piping freely flowing. Further addition of a water and sludge recycling system reduces the amount of water that ends up in the product to a negligible amount. Very infrequent cleaning of the carryback that falls from the return run will be required. PURPOSE The purpose of this proposal is to propose a standard method for specifying belt cleaner systems based on user expectations and equipment performance over time. DEFINITION In bulk solids handling by conveyor belt, carryback is the material that adheres to the belt after the belt discharges its cargo. PROPOSED STANDARD Required Basic Good Practices There are a number of basic design and operating principles that are good practice for the selection, installation, and maintenance of belt cleaning systems on conveyors in order to achieve "standard belt cleaning performance over time. 1. The Belt Cleaning System shall be designed to meet the performance requirements based on the worst operating conditions and worst bulk solids proper- ties that are expected. 2. Each conveyor discharge point shall be designed to readily accept the manufacturer's recommended minimum number of belt cleaners. In addition, the discharge chute shall be designed to accept, with minor modifications, at least one additional cleaner if it is required.

Like most major firms engaged in project management, Dravo Corporation faces a constant challenge to keep its management systems in tune with the ever-increasing demands imposed by larger and more complex projects. This paper suggests that one of the key elements in meeting this challenge is more effective organization of project data. It reveals some of the details of a program at Dravo's Minerals 6 Metals Division which seeks, through better organization of project data, to improve Dravo's capabilities in estimating, cost control, scheduling, performance reporting and material control. In particular, this paper discusses ideas Dravo is developing for improved job numbering, codes of accounts, requisition and purchase order numbering, inventory cataloging, and employee/badge numbering.

The use of a 25.4-mm- (1-in.-) diam water-only hydro-cyclone for separating liberated 125 x 25- µm high-density particles from similar-size lower-density (2.65 g/cc quartz particles, as might be used in soil washing applications, was investigated. As expected, cyclone performance was greatly affected by changes in cyclone geometry and operating conditions. A single-stage separation recovered 75% of the magnetite (4.8 g/cc) while rejecting nearly 60% of the quartz. With ferrosilicon (7.0 g/cc) as the heavy component, the recovery improved to 85%. The use of dense medium in a single stage increased both ferrosilicon recovery and quartz rejection to approximately 90% each. In addition, computer simulations of a three-stage circuit were performed. The simulations showed that recoveries approaching 97% with quartz rejections of 95% were possible.

Introduction Mining and minerals transportation spans the distance from the pit face and mine wall to the consumer. This transportation can be as simple as coal transfer from the mine and preparation plant by conveyor to a mine mouth electric generating plant. Or it can be as complex as copper ore transportation: concentrated, smelted, refined; drawn into wire and insulated; and cut into reels and transported to local industrial supply houses. The route of aluminum from the bauxite pits to the supermarket shelf in the form of household food wrap is another example of the potential complexity of minerals transportation. For perspective, however, mine to market minerals transportation can be split into three components: materials handling, transportation, and distribution. It should also be recognized that each mineral, market, producer, and consumer has unique transportation characteristics regarding costs, transportation mode, and alternatives in the transportation scheme. Some obvious considerations are the number of producers and consumers, the number of markets and customers the mineral serves. Concerning the latter, are you selling a million tons to one customer or a ton each to a million customers? Transportation volume About the only generalization that can be made about minerals transportation concerns the large volume of materials involved. No other industry compares to the mining and minerals industry in its huge movement of product in the crude, semi-processed, processed, fabricated, and converted states, as shown by the accompanying table of US mineral production. Whether it is crushed stone or sand and gravel moving by truck to a local market from local producers, or coal moving by 9.07 kt (10,000 st) unit trains from a mine to a power plant, or iron ore moving by lake vessel from the upper lake ports to the lower lake steel mills, mineral transportation volumes are huge. The nature of production and consumption affects the transportation mode. More than 60% of the coal moves by rail. The majority of iron ore moves by lake vessel. Ninety per cent of the sand and gravel and more than 80% of crushed stone moves by truck. Factors Affecting Minerals Transportation Some would define minerals transportation as the cost and route to move a mineral product from the first point of sale to the first point of consumption. Literature is rather abundant on the topic of steady-state network analysis programs. Many versions exist, some of them have real extended facilities such as full graphical manipulation, fire simulation in motion, etc. These programs are certainly of great help to any ventilation planning and often assist the ventilation engineer in his operational decision making. However, what ever the efficiency of the calculation algorithms might be, their weak point still is the overall validity of the model. This numerical model, apart from maybe the questionable application of some physical laws, depends directly on the quality of the data used to identify its most influencing parameters such as the passive (resistance) or active (fan) characteristic of each of the branches in the network. Considering the non-linear character of the problem and the great number of variables involved, finding the closest numerical model of a real mine ventilation network is without any doubt a very difficult problem. This problem, often referred to as the parameter adjustment problem, is in almost every practical case solved on an experimental and "feeling" basis. Only a few papers put forward a mathematical solution based on a least square approach as the best fit criterion. The aim of this paper is to examine the possibility to apply the well-known simplex method to this problem. The performance of this method and its capability to reach the global optimum which corresponds to the best fit is discussed and compared to that of other methods.
