"Although conventional coal mine designs are conservative regarding pillar strength, local failures such as roof-falls and pillar bursts still affect mine safety and operations. Previous studies have identified that discontinuous, layered roof materials have some self-supporting capacity. This research is a preliminary step towards understanding these mechanics in coal-measure rocks. Although others have considered broad conceptual models and simplified analogs for mine roof behavior, this study presents a unique numerical model that more completely represents in-situ roof conditions. The discrete element method (DEM) is utilized to conduct a parametric analysis considering a range of in-situ stress ratios, material properties, and joint networks to determine the parameters controlling the stability of single-entries modeled in two-dimensions. Model results are compared to empirical observations of roof-support effectiveness (ARBS) in the context of the coal mine roof rating (CMRR) system. Results such as immediate roof displacement, overall stability, and statistical relationships between model parameters and outcomes are presented herein. Potential practical applications of this line of research include: (1) roof-support optimization for a range of coal-measure rocks, (2) establishment of a relationship between roof stability and pillar stress, and (3) determination of which parameters are most critical to roof stability and therefore require concentrated evaluation.INTRODUCTIONRecent studies on pillar design have suggested that the assumptions utilized in traditional methods such as tributary area theory (TAT) (i.e. overburden has no self-supporting capacity, infinite pillar array, and CHILE material properties) are invalid in many geo-mining conditions (Esterhuizen, Mark, and Murphy, 2010; Frith and Reed, 2017). Although TAT is conservative with respect to pillar loading, and mine fatalities have steadily decreased since 1990, roof-falls and pillar bursts still occur and injure hundreds of miners per year (Mark, Pappas, and Barczak, 2011). Even though large-scale global mine failure has not occurred in a US coal mine since 2007, the mechanics of global and local stability as governed by the relationship between geologic parameters, mine geometry, and engineering design are still not well-constrained.Numerical methods are a highly effective tool that can be used to gain further insight into these relationships. When using such an approach, calibration to existing empirical relationships is imperative to ensure that numerical model results are realistic. In this study, we utilize the discrete element method (DEM) approach in Itasca’s Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC v. 6.0) (Itasca, 2010).DEM accounts for explicit separation and contact of individual deformable blocks (Jing, 2003) and captures how discontinuities can affect system behavior. Discontinuous and anisotropic rockmass properties are typical features in coal-measure rock which contain various horizontal (bedding) and sub-vertical (joints) fractures depending on their depositional environment, diagenesis, and historic and current stress states."

The Windy Craggy polymetallic massive sulphide deposit is located in the extreme northwest corner of British Columbia 40 miles west of the Haines Highway, 90 miles northwest of the port of Haines Alaska. The physical setting is mountainous country but with few peaks rising above 2,000 metres elevation, in contrast to the spectacular mountainous terrain to the north and south in Kluane and Glacier Bay Parks respectively. Valleys are classically U-shaped with incised V-shaped bottoms. The upper portions are still occupied by glaciers, which in the Windy Craggy area are documented as retreating at a rapid rate -in the case of the Tats Glacier of the order of 1% of its mass per year. The outcrops around Windy Craggy show a north-easterly dipping sequence of Mesozoic limey sediments and volcanics being the western limb of a north northwesterly trending syncline. Northeasterly cross folding provides a few complications. The flanks of the syncline have been buttressed by intrusive bodies of granitic affinity.

Technological change is continually affecting the mining industry and the many papers being presented at this meeting reflect this fact. I fully agree that miners must remain fully cognizant of technology that can change mining costs and therefore your competitive marketplace. Despite the embrace of new technology and effective mine management techniques, the mining enterprise may not realize increased net income if the structure of the minerals marketplace is not understood. An important segment of the marketing structure for minerals is transportation. Transportation costs per ton can be much greater than the mining costs per ton and may accordingly overshadow hard earned gains in productivity. Change is greatly affecting the transportation industry but the change is driven more by governmental policy than technology. Although some technological advances are occurring in the bulk transportation business, the changes I want to address arise from policy. Policy changes have come from legislation in the 1970's culminating with the Staggers Act of 1980 and ensuing Interstate Commerce Commission decisions.

Accurate level detection is required to make full use of level in optimizing control strategies for flotation columns. Techniques based on pressure and electrical conductivity are compared. Pressure and conductivity profiles give good agreement on level. Level calculated from single and multiple pressure values became more accurate using, in order, one, two and three sensor locations. The level estimate remained in error, however, because, unlike the collection zone, froth zone bulk density varies with height. A conductivity probe continually updating the conductance profile is a practical method of obtaining an accurate level.

At the 1976 Annual Meeting of AIDE, Alan Merson reminded his audience that economic' success comes to those who understand things as they are, rather than as they have been or what ideology says they should be (1). He went on to say that, measured by this standard, the mining industry is in trouble. The mining firms had recognized long ago the importance of effective lobbying in Washington and the state capitals. But, he pointed out, those methods are nearly worthless anymore in coping with many land use problems because the critical decisions are likely to be made at the local level. There the tactics are far different as are the relations of the decisionmakers to the parties before then. Furthermore, in his estimation the trend is to leave land use regulation largely to the local level of government. All who are concerned for access to land for mineral development will be benefited by reading Professor Merson's paper lie is speaking effectively about the context of decisionmaking for specific cases, the shape of things in the here and now. There is, however, a longer-tern set of considerations that if pursued will be likely to foster the creation of public support for mining developments. At that sane meeting I spoke on two foundations of the long-term relationships: namely, the growth in requirements for minerals implied by projections of increasing consumption; and a rationale for fostering mineral exploration and development. I mentioned in passing the social decisionmaking process for public uses of land (2). This paper is intended as a complement. The growth of requirements for Minerals and the rationale for development based on the Entropy Law will be only mentioned. The main concern will be on the process of social decisionmaking in the context of access to land for mineral development.

Sand bed filters are used to remove large and small particles from liquid streams. The large particles are removed by the straining action of the filter bed and the small particles are removed by particle deposition on the surface of the bed particles. Particle deposition, while being essential for the filtering action of colloidal particles, is not the only process that occurs in the filter bed. Other processes that occur are (1) the substrate becomes filled with particles limiting further deposition, and (2) some deposited particles are resuspended. The sum total of all these processes determine the performance of a filter bed.

The principals of McCabe Industrial Minerals, Inc., have been involved in the mining, processing, and marketing of nonmetallic minerals for more than 40 years. In addition to marketing nonmetallic minerals produced by other companies, McCabe Minerals owns and operates three plants that produce headlap-roofing granules, with 25 employees and annual sales approaching $6 million. During its 22 years of operation, the company has developed many different markets, and a list of factors that is used in making our marketing and feasibility studies. These criteria (Table 1) are used extensively by the company in all of its projects, and we present this and other data about the company in this brief report. The purpose of this paper is to provide a method for analyzing the sequencing of mining production processes and predicting the effects of any planned changes. Included is a description of the development and utilization of a project-scheduling simulation that combines analytical scheduling with stochastic-activity durations. The simulation is demonstrated in two realistic examples: a longwall face-to-face transfer sequence and the effect of varying advance rates on longwall development sections. Statistical data that can provide a basis for more informed production decisions are generated in the form of project activity/path criticality and project-duration distributions. In both examples, a quantitative risk assessment, regarding subjective decisions in underground production sequencing, is presented.

Beginning in 1961 the Coal Research Bureau of the West Virginia University School of Mines began a program of research to investigate the potential of the magnetic separation process to remove sulfur of the pyritic form from pulverized coal. Using a so-called isodynamic magnetic separator (1) it was demonstrated that significant quantities of pyritic sulfur could be removed from coal. Pulverized coal samples representing several different coal seams were individually screened into sizes in the 48 mesh by 200 mesh (297 to 74 microns) range, and untreated and steam-air treated samples of each were processed by the magnetic separator. The results of the investigations to magnetically remove pyrite from coal were published in two separate reports issued by the Coal Research Bureau (2,3), The isodynamic magnetic separator was designed about 30 years ago for use in geological and mineralogical laboratories (1,4,5) to isolate one or more minerals exhibiting only small differences in their magnetic propertiese Specifically, to accomplish this, the air gap of the unit was designed to provide a nearly constant magnetic gradient both laterally and longitudinally in the separating zone. It is reported that mineral concentrates of 99.5 percent purity can-be produced on closely-sized fractions after several cleanings through the unit. The isodynamic magnetic separator, therefore, was not expected to process coal containing sizes smaller than 200 mesh, or to demonstrate commercial capability to process pulverized coal. The primary purpose of the Coal Research Bureau in using the unit was that of determining if the magnetic process could remove pyrite from coal, and thereby encourage further research directed toward development of acceptable full-scale processing equipment.

Introduction and Historical Background Although both sluices and devices using a simple flowing film are among the oldest known methods of concentration, they are still extensively employed in a variety of situations where they are not only efficient but also have a low operating cost. More particularly, they are valuable for making a bulk concentrate of high specific gravity minerals from alluvials and beach sand and in upgrading low value ores. The antiquity of some of the basic concepts can be seen in the fact that they are found in Agricola's De Re Metallica which was published at Basic in 1546, while in 1602, Carew114 gave a fairly clear account of tin ore dressing in Cornwall in which grass turves were used to catch the cassiterite. This is perhaps one of the forerun¬ners of the blanket strake. The planilla of Mexico, the lanchute of Malaysia and the old Cornish box huddle are also descended from these early strakes. In fact, a sluice with holes in the bottom for concentrate discharge was shown by Agricola, not unlike the principle used in the plane table and the lamflo sluice. The convex huddle for the treatment of sandy material appeared about 1848 and the concave form eight to ten years later. For the treatment of "slime" sizes, wooden dead frames which were manually worked were used in Cornwall for many years but gave way to the automatic water-operated type in 1860, and even a mechanically tilted frame was described by Henderson115 in 1857. Theoretical Considerations The behavior of solid particles in suspension depends to a great extent upon the pulp density and the size of the suspended particles. In a fairly dilute suspension, such as that normally used when dealing with small particle sizes, the behavior of particles in a flowing film results from two effects. These are the lateral displacement, which is determined by the time taken for each particle to penetrate the flowing film and reach the solid surface, and the resistance offered by each particle to further displacement after it has reached this surface. The initial penetration through the flowing film depends on the size and specific gravity of the particle and the thickness and viscosity of the film. As a result the smaller particles will migrate further before their movement is retarded relative to larger particles of the same specific gravity. The behavior on reaching the solid surface de¬pends on whether there is a single particle layer or, as is more often the case, a multiple layer or thin bed of material which is sufficiently dilated, permits the penetration of higher specific gravity grains. Thrust of Flowing Films. When a thin film of liquid flows over a plane solid surface, the layer next to the surface remains at rest but the velocity of the film increases with the distance from the surface and becomes a maximum near, but not quite at, the free surface. Therefore, a particle in suspension in such a film is acted upon by a greater force near the upper part of the film than at the lower part, resulting in an overturning effect. After a particle reaches the separating surface or an accumulated densely packed bed of other particles, the liquid flow causes it to move downstream by rolling, sliding, or by a movement involving alternating suspension and deposi¬tion (saltation). In rolling and sliding, which are brought about by a substantially noneddying stream, the large submerged particles are acted upon to the greatest extent and they move more rapidly than smaller ones, notwithstanding their greater mass. When two particles of the same size but of different specific gravity are considered, the higher density one moves more slowly by reason of its greater mass. As a result the particles tend to become arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 29. If any particle is so large as to stand above the water surface, the transporting force on such a particle, although the maximum available, will have less effect than that on a submerged one. Such large grains are therefore carried a lesser distance. Fluid Velocity in a Flowing Film It can be shown that if y is the distance within the flowing film from the interface, the fluid velocity v' at this point is given by IIn this equation p' is the fluid density, g the acceleration due to gravity, a the viscosity, a the angle made by the film to the horizontal, and 0 the film thickness (in cgs units). From these expressions it can be seen that the depth of the flowing film varies as the cube root of the volume of fluid and inversely as the cube root of the sine of the plane surface inclination. Similarly the distance a particle can travel before reaching the surface is directly related to the quantity of fluid and its viscosity. The viscosity of pulp is greatly increased by the presence of near colloidal particles and consequently the penetration of the somewhat larger grains through the flowing film is retarded, resulting in them being carried further across the concentrator deck. Obviously this effect can be reduced by prior removal of some or all of the ultra¬fine particles. The detrimental effect of kaolin on the separation of fine ferrosilicon from quartz has also been demonstrated by Johnston,116 the relationship between viscosity and efficiency of separation being shown in Fig. 30. The pH value also has a very marked influence on the viscosity and the use of acid mine water, for example, can increase viscosity materially and thereby result in lower efficiency. Dilation of Multi-Particle Systems Except during washing (when a single particle layer may exist) concentration usually takes place in a bed of particles which is partially dilated or stirred by eddy currents. The objective of mine ventilation is to provide suitable environmental conditions in working places at an economical cost. Maintaining a stable air flow, i.e., a flow quantity and the direction, is of vital importance. In practice, however, air flow quantity in underground openings varies continuously. Therefore, the stability of air flow means relative stability that is the flow in a branch moves along a certain direction while the variation in air quantity stays within acceptable limits. Many underground mines have low stability of mine air flow because almost all types of ventilation systems involve complex diagonal branches through which air flow quantity and, more importantly, the air flow direction may change easily. This creates extremely hazardous, unstable conditions, especially during emergencies. This paper deals with the directional stability of air flows in underground mines in single or multiple fan systems. It examines the rules of directional changes of air flows in diagonal branches, and proposes a method of calculating the stability conditions. It provides a criterion that may be used in designing new mine ventilation systems to ensure a desired degree of stability or in improving the existing systems.

Mineral suspensions in water show Newtonian flow properties at low percent solids. However, this changes to a non-Newtonian regime as the pet-cent solids increases. For Newtonian fluids, viscosity is independent of shear rate, hut, for non-Newtonian fluids, viscosity varies with shear rate. Therefore, if the slurry is non-Newtonian, attempting to measure the viscosity at a shear rate different from the shear rate experienced by the fluid within the process is futile. This is especially true for a hydrocyclone, where the rate of shear is different at different points within the hydrocyclone. In this case, it is very important to determine the flow type of the suspension before attempting to establish any correlation between the viscosity and the process efficiency. A new technique to distinguish such changes inflow type was developed. This involves two viscometers: a coaxial cylinder-type viscometer that measures apparent viscosity at low shear rates and a vibrating sphere-type viscometer that measures the apparent viscosity at high shear rates. For each of these instruments, special precautions were taken to allow, for the measurement of the viscosity of rapidly settling mineral suspensions. Because the vibrating sphere viscometer is operated at a much higher shear rate than the rotating viscometer, the two instruments together could determine the shear-rate dependency of the viscosity. Ground silica (80% passing 65 µm) in water was used to prepare slurries at concentrations ranging from 10% to 70% (by weight) solids. The viscosity of each slurry sample was measured simultaneously by both viscometers, and the results were compared. With this technique, it was found that all of the silica-slurry samples tested were in the Newtonian flow regime for up to 70% (by weight) solids. Methocel and Cellosize polymer solutions showed clear non-Newtonian behavior using this technique. This confirmed that non-Newtonian behavior of the silica slurries, if present, would have been detected by this arrangement.

The longtime rule-of-thumb for conveyors was that only one cleaner was needed to solve carryback problems and help keep belt replacement costs under control. That is now being rethought. Belt-cleaning systems manufacturers, designers, and users are shifting to the view that multiple cleaners, placed at key locations on the conveyor and properly maintained, are necessary to solve today's material build-up (carryback) problems. There are still not many statistics on conveyor belt cleaning. But some recent studies support this belief. One study contends that the plant maintenance engineer's biggest problem is keeping the conveyor system running efficiently. The study also said the conveyor itself is responsible for most plant shutdowns. An unscheduled conveyor shutdown can cost more than $100,000/hr and run into millions in lost production in a given year. Other studies pointed out that belt replacement is the greatest single cost of the conveyor system. These studies allude to an important fact: cleaner belts lead to reliability and longer belt life. They showed that a critical relationship exists between characteristics of material being moved and the design of all major conveyor components. In practically all situations this relationship is keyed to belt cleaners, which have long been considered "add-ons" or "accessories." At the Fifth International Coal Utilization Exhibition and Conference, the Sammis Station-Ohio Edison Co. said it installed four belt cleaners on each problem belt. The company found that under certain conditions, when the coal is wet and sticky, carryback can be so heavy that it will flow over two cleaners. Before installing the cleaners, it was necessary to schedule a cleanup crew of four men each day and rent a large vacuum truck for an eight-hour shift. In addition, the company dredged the harbor three times a year, to remove coal spillage. Once the cleaners became operational, however, cleanup costs were reduced to a few days labor every third month. Renting the vacuum truck crew was also eliminated, and harbor dredging became necessary only once each year. In addition, the Mechanical Handling Engineers' Association (MHEA) in London pointed out that standards for cleaners are sorely lacking in the industry. MHEA called for instituting such standards in the future. They also reaffirm using multiple belt cleaners for increased efficiency. MHEA pointed out that some conveyor belts can be cleaned by one device, provided that it is correctly installed and adequately maintained. But MHEA recommended that a system approach be adopted, since this has proved more effective in practice. There are two main reasons why one belt cleaner fails to solve most carryback problems. First, management often reasons that the design of the current cleaner has probably been around for years, so it "must be good." This logic leads to a continued investment in keeping the current model operating, which includes pouring substantial sums of money in "housekeeping" manpower hours because the cleaner does not clean. Second, most single-belt cleaners are specified too late in the design process (indeed, some after the system is operational). This complicates matters since cleaning efficiency is directly proportional to when they are specified: the later the specification, the less efficiency. Cleaning equipment should be taken into consideration before the conveyor's structure is designed and fabricated. Otherwise the space available to install adequate cleaning equipment at the head pulley may be inadequate. Instead of matching conveyor with proper cleaner (as would occur during the design of the conveyor itself), designing a cleaning system "after-the-fact" becomes a matter of matching cleaner to conveyor. This limits choices in cleaners and, therefore, overall cleaning effectiveness. This is why after-the-fact designs of single belt cleaners are costly and rarely successful. While it is always best to specify belt cleaners during early design stages, the multiple-cleaner systems approach makes the timing of cleaner installation less critical. Because of flexible mounting hardware, a well-designed system can lead to 99% efficiency in cleaning and put an end to carryback even after a system is operational. Scarcely a month goes by that I or someone else at Newmont Mining or Newmont Gold isn't asked to give a talk on the topic I was asked to discuss today. Investors, financial analysts, geologists, metallurgists, even our government--everybody wants to know what the future holds for gold mining. Well, you're not going to get exactly what you asked for. Today, I'm prepared to focus primarily not on what the future will bring to us, but rather on what the future will demand from us. More than that, I cannot undertake because it isn't within my scope to predict how wise and resourceful everyone in our industry will be in the future. What our future will hold, as I see it, will depend on our--and our colleagues'-- responses to these very real demands. Three critical issues stand out in my mind as to what the future will demand of us in the gold mining industry. And these demands will be for: 1. The very greatest of technical expertise and innovation. 2. The highest order of environmental sensitivity and timely accommodation. 3. Planning, planning and more planning. All of these flow inexorably today from the traditional objective of any mining company--or any company in any business, and that is, to make money. Nothing as I see it, should be undertaken by a geologist, metallurgist or even an environmental department, unless the exercises will enhance profits; and nothing may be ignored which can have consequent damage to the bottom line. Thus, the three issues I've listed for you subordinate themselves to the objective of making money, although at least in the environmental area, it might seem to some that we can only incur additional costs without even a dollar-for-dollar return. I hope to disabuse you today of any such out-of-date notion. Let's tackle the first issue-- Technical Expertise and Innovation. Newmont Gold Company this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary of successful and profitable operations on the Carlin Trend. Carlin in 1961, which is when exploration began on the "Trend" by Newmont, actually may share a lot of similarities with Carlin today. They didn't then know where the gold was and, if they found it, they had one hell of a challenge mining and processing ore at a profit because gold was selling at only $35 an ounce. Today, we know where the current reserves are. But we don't know where our future reserves lie. Furthermore, we don't know exactly how we're going to mine them, and, as everyone here knows too well, we don't know what the optimum metallurgical treatment is, even if we can find and mine them. And all that despite the abundant level of modern experience and skills within the current generation of mining companies, and the fact that, even taking inflation into account, gold sells at a higher price today than in 1965 when Carlin began operations. But, of course, I'm telling you what you already know.

Rogers Group, Inc., is the nation's largest privately held aggregates producer (primarily producing crushed limestone and secondarily sand & gravel) and a major regional asphalt paving construction contractor. The company also has interests in building supplies and coal. Facilities are concentrated in five states in the central U.S. (Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama), with an additional location in Southwestern Virginia. At the request of its then CEO and with support from the company's ownership, Rogers embarked on a strategic planning program in late 1986 by retaining an outside management consulting firm. The ultimate goal of this program was to develop a self-sustaining strategic planning process to inject a strategic dimension into every manager's business thinking and to improve company performance. Since then, Rogers has internalized the outside consultants' strategic planning framework --initially, using it wholesale, and later, greatly streamlining and tailoring both the planning process and product to meet the specific needs of the company. Implementation of strategies developed from strategic planning has resulted in significant improvements throughout the organization. The latest product of the strategic planning effort is a company-wide (or, "corporate") strategic plan that carries the theme of "Market Leadership through Excellence". This paper provides a case study of successful corporate strategic planning by examining the evolution of strategic planning at Rogers and by summarizing the key elements of a sound planning process and product.

Truck fleet dispatching plays a crucial role in reducing operational costs and fulfilling operational targets in open-pit mining operations and is subject to large uncertainty arising from the operating cycles of trucks and loading equipment. This paper proposes a reinforcement learning-based truck dispatching system. Reinforcement learning is a machine learning area that deals with learning an optimal sequential decision-making strategy in an uncertain environment. An open-pit load-and-haul simulation is developed that also captures the truck movements and interactions in the shared road network, and a Neural Network is successfully trained to suggest truck dispatching decisions in a real-time manner.

Eldorado Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. owns and operates three gold mines. The Sao Bento underground gold mine in Minas Gerais State, Brazil produced 105,907 ounces in 1997. The La Colorada and La Trinidad open pit, heap leach mines in Mexico produced over 83,000 ounces in 1997. With a deteriorating gold market plaguing the industry throughout 1997 Eldorado had to take critical measures at each mine to enhance gold production while lowering cash operating costs. Each mine had its own unique problems to confront. This case study will discuss three distinct courses of action taken at the three mine sites.

From October 1980 through August 1982, surveys were conducted on 19 longwall mining operations to obtain data relative to respirable dust levels associated with particular longwall operations and occupations, to make recommendations for enhancing dust control, and, where applicable, to evaluate the effectiveness of new technology implemented to control dust. The paper summarizes the data collected during these surveys and, where possible, draws conclusions and discusses actions that can be utilized to reduce exposures to respirable coal mine dust on longwall mining operations.
