Elemental sulfur deposits generally can be classified as either volcanogenic or biogenic. The latter can be divided into biosyngenetic and bioepigenetic deposits. Essentially all economically important sulfur deposits are bioepigenetic replacements of anhydrite or gypsum in basins containing evaporites and hydrocarbons. Anaerobic bacteria utilize the oxygen of sulfate ions to oxidize hydrocarbons to C02 and reduce the sulfate to H2S. Sulfur deposits are formed by concomitant and subsequent oxidation of the H2S. These bacterial systems can operate on enormous scales, producing deposits containing over 200 million tons of elemental sulfur. There are no known "old" sulfur deposits; almost all known deposits are younger than Miocene and most are still actively forming today. Therefore, it is probable that, with burial and time, sulfur deposits are converted to sulfide deposits. Perhaps more important, bacterial oxidation of hydrocarbons and resultant production and trapping of large quantities of H2S appears to be the logical explanation for the location of many important metal sulfide deposits such as the Mississippi Valley type lead and zinc deposits.

Flotation columns and their variations are increasingly replacing conventional cells in mineral processing circuitry. While the operational characteristics of columns differ from those of conventional cells, the same scale-up methodologies are being employed in design. This practice may be attributed to poor understanding of the factors controlling throughput. The use of tall flotation columns is frequently justified on the requirement for increased particle residence time. It is shown that longer particle residence times in the column cell alone do not translate into increased recoveries. Throughput data from several industrial flotation column installations is presented. An attempt at using dimensional analysis to provide scale-up methodology for the factors controlling column throughput is made.

This work evaluates the effectiveness of similitude theory in predicting the draft of a rubber tire loader’s bucket during initial penetration. The work uses 1:16 and 1:8 scale models of an 18-t capacity load haul dump, scaled with the Buckingham Pi theorem, to evaluate the prediction of draft and penetration under different operating and different dynamic conditions. We hypothesized that the observed relationships between draft and longitudinal penetration and the operating and dynamic conditions will hold true for an upscaled model. Similarly, we hypothesized that the results of experiments conducted with the smaller scale model should predict the draft on an upscaled model.

The market for thermal coal has recently been growing rapidly and it is projected to continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Both the national and international markets often demand high Btu low sulfur thermal coal in order to minimize the cost of utilization and meet the environmental restrictions. High quality thermal coal can be prepared to compete in the utility market by desulfurizing the high Btu midwestern coal and blending it with low sulfur western coal which is usually low in Btu content. The methods that can be used for optimizing the coal preparation plant operating parameters for physically desulfurizing coal is presented.

Park City Municipal Corporation (PCMC), long before being recognized as an Olympic venue was known as one of the great American silver mining towns. During a century of active mining, the Park City mining district produced millions of ounces of silver in addition to a substantial amount of mine tailing waste. Since 1985 the City has been remediating these impacts with state and federal oversight. One particular challenging CERCLIS site, that was previously a historic mine tailings pond is known as Prospector Square Development (CERCLIS Listing Silver Creek Tailings UTD98051404). This site has been very challenging due to the metals that impact the shallow ground water that eventually drain into the Silver Creek Watershed. To address the water quality impairment the City and Missouri University of Science and Technology teamed up to investigate the feasibility of constructing a horizontal-flow wetland to treat this pollutant source. This effort began with the building of a pilot cell in June of 2004 and lead to the construction of a full scale horizontal-flow wetland in the fall of 2008. The design of the pilot and full scale biocell was based upon lab-scale research conducted by the Missouri University of Science and Technology. In October of 2008, the Prospector Drain effluent was introduced to the system and to date analytical results reveal that the biocell is treating the Prospector Drain outfall below the Silver Creek Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) endpoint goals for zinc .39 mg/L and cadmium .00075 mg/L. The water chemistry of the influent, that originates from the historic silver mine tailings pond, is impaired with zinc and cadmium and has low iron with a pH of roughly 6.5. The construction of this unit encountered many challenges related to constituent relations, regulatory scrutiny, constructability and start-up. Nonetheless, since implementation this unit is considered a success for improving water quality within the Silver Creek Watershed.

"The Montreal Metro Blue Line Extension Project is part of a metropolitan Program that was launched in 2009 by the Transportation Ministry of Quebec to add additional extensions to existing metro lines in the cities of Montreal, Longueil and Laval with the intention to meet current demand and future growth within the Montreal agglomeration. Specifically the Blue Line Extension Project will add five underground stations to the East of the Montreal. The paper addresses the preparation and the implementation of a three-step geotechnical and geo-environmental investigation program and preliminary design considerations such as the selection of a preferred horizontal and vertical alignment, the selection of construction methods based on previous local experience and current industry trends, as well as preliminary sizing of underground infrastructures. PROJECT BACKGROUND An agreement between the three mayors of the Montreal Metropolitan City agglomeration, namely, Montreal, Longueil and Laval prompted the Government of the Province of Quebec to create a project office to oversee the studies of extending the existing metro network. The last extension of the existing metro network was completed in 2008 with the Laval extension, which consisted of adding three stations from the existing Orange line. The current extension Program consists of three different extensions, namely extending the Orange Line to Laval and finishing the loop, extending the Blue Line to the East of Montreal by adding five stations, and adding five stations on the Southshore of the St-Lawrence River for the Yellow Line extension. The extension program also requires the construction of an underground storage and maintenance garage located to the north-west of the existing Cote-Vertu station on the Orange line. Figure 1 shows the overall extension program with the existing network."

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery applications are increasing for battery-powered vehicles because of their high energy density and expected long cycle life. With the development of battery-powered vehicles, fire and explosion hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries are a safety issue that needs to be addressed. Li-ion batteries can go through a thermal runaway under different abuse conditions, including thermal, mechanical and electrical abuse, leading to a fire or explosion. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) mining program is conducting research to prevent and respond to lithium-ion battery fires in battery-electric vehicles in the mining industry. In this study, experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of different suppression systems including dry chemical, Class D extinguishing powder and water mist for lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack fires. The effects of activation time and release time of the water-mist system on the suppression of the LFP battery (a type of Li-ion battery) fires were studied. The results of this study may be helpful for developing strategic firefighting and response plans for battery-powered vehicles used in mining.

On December 2, 1942, a scientific team lead by Nobel Prize winner Enrico Fermi first initiated and controlled a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. This historic event occurring beneath the stands of the University of Chicago football stadium instantly created an entirely new and tremendously broad area of technology. Indeed, the event probably changed the course of world history and considering the curret energy shortage, it probably came none too soon. Following many technological breakthroughs in the ensuing years, this event led to the first full scale nuclear fueled electric generating plant. In December, 1957, the Shippingport Nuclear Power Plant became operational and the United States had entered the era of the nuclear fueled electric generating station. Today, only fifteen years later, there are some thirty-five operating nuclear power plants in the United States with another 56 under construction and 116 on order. Still, we are only scratching the surface of this tremendous energy source. In 1970, less than one-percent of the total electric generating capacity in the United States was nuclear fueled. By 1985, it is projected that 45% of our generating capacity will result from nuclear power plants. These projections are based upoa statistics of six months to a year ago and considering the current energy shortage and recent attempts by the United States Atomic Energy Commission (USAEC) to speed the licensing process and encourage standardized plants, the contribution of nuclear power to our total generating capacity may be even greater. In summary, it is obvious that nuclear power is now, and will continue, playing an important role in our future. Those factions of government, industry and the professional community charged with fully developing this tremendous energy source must deal with it rationally, logically and expediently. The various environmental considerations in nuclear plant siting play an important role in the overall plan.

Shotcrete has been used for approximately 20 years to facilitate tunnel excavation through poor ground. Early examples of such usage in North America include the recuperation of the Granduc Mines access tunnel in Northern British Columbia, and similar work performed in the Carley V. Porter and Big Walker Tunnels in the United States. Mining companies such as Craigmont Mines in B.C. and Hecla Mines have used shotcrete in their workings for the past ten years. Shotcrete is now a widely utilized fool in the mining and tunnel construction industries in North America, but the accumulated experience is too limited for many to fully appreciate the capability of shotcrete to control ground movements and to understand the limitations of this tool. It is common, for instance, to use shotcrete to "bridge the gap" between rock bolt-supported and steel-rib supported ground and to avoid the use of shotcrete in water-bearing ground. Shotcrete can, and has been, used economically and practically under most severe ground conditions.

Vince Lombardi once said, "Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect." When it comes to building a mine that will operate at the optimum level for the set of geologic conditions from which it was developed, Lombardi's remark might be paraphrased to describe the problem: planning won't guarantee the best possible mine operation unless it is the best possible mine planning. Any sacrifice in the best possible mine planning introduces the risk that the end results may not reach the optimum mine operation desired. This section addresses many of the factors to be considered in the initial phase of mine planning. These factors have the determining influence on the mining method, the size of the operation, the size of the mine openings, the mine productivity, the mine cost, and, eventually, the economic parameters used to determine whether or not the mineral reserve even should be developed. A little-known fact, even within the metal-mining community, is that room-and-pillar mining accounts for most of the underground mining in the united States. According to a 1973 study on noncoal mining (Anon., 1974), more than 76% of the producing mines [of over 1089 t/d (1200 stpd) capacity] produced approximately 70 000 000 t (77,000,000 st) or 60% of the nation's underground tonnage of material by room-and-pillar mining. That same year, 96.8% of the nation's under- ground coal mines produced 262 950 000 t (289,911,000 st) of coal extracted from room-and-pillar mines (Anon., 1976). Thus, nearly 333 000 000 t (367,000,000 st) of the United States' raw material is produced from mines using some form of the room-and-pillar mining system. Because approximately 90% of all mining in the United States is done by some variation of room-and- pillar mining, it is appropriate to give special emphasis to the effects of the various elements of mine planning on room-and-pillar mining. The relationship of these elements to other mining methods will become apparent as the elements are described in later sections herein. TECHNICAL INFORMATION NEEDED FOR PRELIMINARY MINE PLANNING Assuming that the reserve to be mined has been delineated with diamond-drill holes, the items listed in the following paragraphs need to be established with respect to mine planning for the mineralized material. Geologic and Mineralogic Information The geologic and mineralogic information needed includes the following: 1) The size (length, width, and thickness) of the areas to be mined within the overall area to be considered, including multiple areas, zones, or seams. 2) The dip or plunge of each mineralized zone, area, or seam, noting the maximum depth to be mined. 3) The continuity or discontinuity within each of the mineralized zones. 4) Any swelling or narrowing of each mineralized zone. 5) The sharpness between the grades of mineralized zones within the material considered economically minable. 6) The sharpness between the ore and waste cutoff, including whether this cutoff can be determined by observation or must be determined by assay or some special tool; whether this cutoff also serves as a natural parting resulting in little or no dilution, or whether the break between ore and waste must be induced entirely by the mining method; and whether or not the mineralized zone beyond (above or below) the existing cutoff represents submarginal economic value that may be- come economical at a later time. *7) The distribution of various valuable minerals making up each of the minable areas. 8) The distribution of the various deleterious minerals that may be harmful in processing the valuable mineral. 9) Whether or not the identified valuable minerals are interlocked with other fine-grained mineral or waste material. 10) The presence of alteration zones in both the mineralized and the waste zones. Structural Information (Physical and Chemical) The needed structural information includes the following: * 1 ) The depth of cover. 2) A detailed description of the cover including: the type of cover; * the structural features in relation to the mineralized zone; * the structural features in relation to the proposed mine development; and * the presence of and information about water, gas, or oil that may be encountered. 3) The structure of the host rock (back, floor, hanging wall, footwall, etc.), including: * the type of rock; * the approximate strength or range of strengths; * any noted weakening structures; * any noted zones of inherent high stress; noted zones of alteration; the porosity and permeability; * the presence of any swelling- clay or shale interbedding; the rock quality designation (RQD) throughout the various zones in and around all of the mineralized area to be mined out; the temperature of the zones proposed for mining; and the acid generating nature of the host rock. 4) The structure of the mineralized material, including all of the factors in item 3 plus: * the tendency of the mineral to change character after being broken, i.e., oxidizing, degenerating to all fines, recompacting into a solid mass, becoming fluid, etc.; * the siliceous content of the ore; the fibrous content of the ore; and the acid generating nature of the ore. The history of mine safety legislation in this country is also a history of mine explosions. Nearly every piece of safety legislation that has been introduced or amended has resulted from some type of a disaster. When coal was first discovered and mined, it was extracted from along outcrops. As the coal became depleted near the surface, underground mining developed. When the first mine penetrated the outcrop, a great number of problems developed, many of which remain with us today. One of those problems is the potential for mine ignitions and explosions. Naturally, when underground mining progressed a few feet into the outcrop, some type of artificial light was needed. Early accounts of mining in Spain, Italy, Japan, and Great Britain indicate that torches served to light the mines. Later, candles were used, and still later, earthern oil lamps containing fish oil were used. As workings got deeper, explosions began to occur. When one did occur it was thought to be the work of goblins or the devil. As explosions became more frequent, it became very obvious that the use of open flames for lighting was very dangerous. A substitute was sought. Dried fish skins which gave off a weak phosphorescent light were tried. A mixture of flour and lime made from oyster shells called Canton phosphorous was also tried unsuccessfully. Fireflies in a bottle were also used.

The purpose of this paper is two fold. It will: (1) examine leasing analysis as a project evaluation criterion, and (2) compare the cost of leasing with other methods of financing. The use of leasing has grown extensively in recent years as a method of obtaining equipment. The computer industry has been highly dependent upon leasing from its earliest days to dispurse its equipment to the customer, while airlines and railroads acquire large segments of their aircraft and rolling stock by leasing. Over the last few years the mining industry has leased haulage trucks, bulldozers and other equipment of similar nature.

For more than fifty years Walter Kidde & Company, Inc. has engaged in the development and manufacturing of both fire suppression and detection equipment. Our initial work for the mining industry centered around dry chemical extinguish-ing equipment for mine haulage cars. To fulfill this need, Kidde engineered and developed a manually activated dry chemical system to provide protection for the wheel wells, cable reels, and motor compartments on various pieces of underground mining equipment. The next phase of mining operation fire protection for Kidde was the area of detection and automatic fire suppression for conveyor belt heads. Early in 1970, a field evaluation program and belt head demonstration unit was taken to 10 areas throughout West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. This extensive field program was a joint effort with National Mine Service Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The objectives of this program were to study mine hazard problems and to determine further requirements of mine operators. The resulting belt head detection system centered around our Continuous Strip Thermistor Core heat detector in conjunction with a Kidde stored pressure dry chemical extinguishing system. Continuous Strip detection has been in use for a number of years in aerospace applications. It has proven flexible and reliable for the rapid detection of overheat conditions and fires in engines of over half the aircraft flying today. The use of Continuous Strip gave us flexibility to protect surface areas over and around the actual conveyor belt head equipment. The nature of Continuous Strip allows us to bend, wrap, and attach the 20 foot long thermistor element over the desired protected points of the belt head. An integral part of the conveyor belt head protection system is the control panel utilizing our comprehensive knowledge of fire alarm control logic. This panel contains supervision circuits which sound trouble signals upon detecting a break in the Continuous Strip; breaks in the wiring to the remote electrical extinguishing activators or to the alarm bell; or loss of primary power. As the flaws in the population balance model (PBM) comminution model are examined more deeply, further errors and problems were discovered. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations was used to solve the dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. The fact that the PBM model equation Inverse Problem is degenerate or underspecified is demonstrated. Multiple solutions to the same PBM equations are provided. It is shown that there is no unique solution to the Inverse Problem unless additional constraints are provided or assumptions are made such as the Arbiter-Bhrany normalization assumption. The severity of the non-uniqueness problem for dynamic grinding is demonstrated. Each solution to a dynamic PBM, while giving the same prediction for a given grinding time interval, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. Actual experimental grinding data was assessed to determine the functionality of mill selection and breakage functions.

Fluorspar is the commercial name for fluorite, a mineral that is calcium fluoride, CaF2. The name, derived from the Latin word fluere (to flow), refers to its low melting point and its early use in metallurgy as a flux. It is the principal industrial source of the element fluorine. Two other minerals, cryolite and fluorapatite, have significant fluorine content. Cryolite, sodium aluminum fluoride, Na3AlF,, is a rare mineral that has been found in commercial quantities only in Greenland. The natural material has been supplanted by synthetic cryolite for its principal industrial use in the manufacture of aluminum. Fluorapatite, Ca5F(PO3)2, is a source of phosphate for fertilizer manufacture, containing a small percentage of fluorine. Commercially mined deposits of apatite have varying amounts of fluorine, chlorine, hydroxyl, and carbonate. HISTORY Fluorspar was used by the early Greeks and Romans for ornamental purposes as vases, drinking cups, and table tops. Various peoples, including the Chinese and the American Indians, carved ornaments and figurines from large crystals. Its usefulness as a flux was known to Agricola in 16th century Europe. Fluorspar mining began in England about 1775 and at various places in the United States between 1820 and 1840. Production grew substantially following the development of basic open hearth steelmaking, wherein it is used as a flux. Use was stimulated by growth of the steel, aluminum, chemical, and ceramic industries, particularly during World Wars I and 11. Fluorocarbons entered the picture in 1931. The use of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (HF) as a catalyst in the manufacture of alkylate for high octane fuel began in 1942. Differential flotation for separating fluorspar from galena, sphalerite, and common gangue minerals in the 1930s and the application of heavy media concentrating methods to the treatment of low grade ores in the 1940s were outstanding technological advances that facilitated increased production. Pelletizing and briquetting of flotation concentrates for use in steel furnaces and the development of flotation schemes for beneficiating ores containing abundant dolomite and barite have been major improvements in the industry. USES OF FLUORITE Fluorspar is used to make hydrogen fluoride (HF), also called hydrofluoric acid, an intermediate for fluorocarbons, aluminum fluoride, and synthetic cryolite. It is used as a flux in the steel and ceramic industries, in iron foundry and ferroalloy practice, and has many minor specialized uses. Hydrogen fluoride is produced by reacting acid grade (97% CaF,) fluorspar with sulfuric acid in a heated kiln or retort to produce HF gas and calcium sulfate. After purification by scrubbing, condensing, and distillation; the HF is marketed as anhydrous HF, a colorless fuming liquid, or it may be absorbed in water to form the aqueous acid, usually 70% HF. Synthetic cryolite, organic and inorganic fluoride chemicals, and elemental fluorine are made from hydrofluoric acid. The acid itself is important in catalysis in the manufacture of alkylate, an ingredient in high-octane fuel for aircraft and automobiles; in steel pickling, enamel stripping, and glass etching and polishing; and in various electroplating operations. The manufacture of one ton of virgin aluminum requires about 12 to 29 kg of fluorine content in synthetic cryolite and aluminum fluoride. This quantity, through improved technology and recovery practices, is being lowered significantly in countries with the most advanced technology (i.e., Australia and Sweden), while others (i.e., Surinam and South Africa), remain at the high end. Elemental fluorine is prepared from anhydrous hydrofluoric acid by electrolysis. Gaseous at room temperature and pressure, fluorine is compressed to a liquid for shipment in cylinders or in tank trucks. Elemental fluorine is used to make uranium hexafluoride, sulfur hexafluoride, and halogen fluorides. Gaseous uranium hexafluoride is used in separating U235 from U233 by the diffusion process. Sulfur hexafluoride is a stable high dielectric gas used in coaxial cables, transformers, and radar wave guides. Halogen fluorides have important applications, mostly as substitutes for elemental fluorine, which is more difficult to handle. Emulsified perfluorochemicals, organic compounds in which all hydrogen atoms have been replaced by fluorine, are undergoing investigation as promising blood substitutes. They transport oxygen and, in conjunction with a simulated blood serum, perform many functions of whole blood. With further development, these organic compounds may ultimately, in emergencies, be useful in saving lives of animals and humans during periods of acute shortages of natural blood. Inorganic fluorides are used as insecticides, preservatives, antiseptics, ceramic additives, and fluxes and in electroplating solutions, antioxidants, and many other products. Boron trifluoride is an important catalyst. Organic fluorides are volume leaders in the fluorine chemical industry. Fluorinated chlorocarbons and fluorocarbons are prepared by the interaction of anhydrous HF with chloroform, perchlorethylene and carbon tetrachloride, and are characterized by low toxicity and notable chemical stability. They perform outstandingly as refrigerants, aerosol propellants, solvents, and cleaning agents and as intermediates for polymers such as fluorocarbon resins and elastomers. Fluorocarbon resins are inert compounds that have unusually low coefficients of friction and have found a number of applications as lubricants for parts that cannot be oiled, e.g., bearings for window raising equipment located inside of automobile doors, in small electronic equipment, for the manufacture of chem-

Introduction The Bulk Handling Technology has already started its transformation to the Industry 4.0. Having some of the harshest working and environmental conditions of the industry, the possibility of remote analysis and maintenance of the components seems a perfect target to focus on. The most important and expensive tools have been adapted to the digital era during last years, from remotely controlled haul trucks to monitored conveyor belts. However, these big parts of the installations rely in smaller parts that have been left aside for a while, mainly due to the difficulty to adapt them to IoT (Internet of Things). The paradigmatic example is the lack of monitored rollers whereas all the other components of the conveyor belt installations (the belt itself, motors, drums etc.) were monitored some time ago. The main problem is that a failure of a single roller can cause the stop of the whole conveyor, due to the possible damages to the belt, thus the implementation of an integral monitoring system of all the components of the conveyor is a must. The R&D Department of ULMA Conveyor Components, has been working since early 2012 on the development of Monitored Rollers, facing all the problems until its final installation in very different demanding conveyors, from the Australian extreme heat to the freezing cold Norway. All the tests done under actual working conditions, in real installations, have given a valuable knowledge in the identification of problems, their solution and the final advantages of a roller monitoring system. Background and Current State The malfunction of a single roller in certain conveyor belts can suppose the standstill of the whole installation until its replacement, due to the risk of greater and more expensive failures like the rip of the belt. In the case of a bulk handling installation where a continuous supply of material is necessary, an unexpected stop of one hour could entail huge economical losses. What’s more, many conveyor belts are several kilometers long or the access to some parts of them is very complicated. Due to these difficulties the inspection and maintenance operations can become expensive and hard going, with staff going over the whole area checking the correct condition of the conveyor and rollers, which means a dangerous activity. As in many other industry products, the condition of rollers can be recognized measuring key parameters like the temperature of the bearings, the vibration level etc. The traditional way is to use the characteristic noise of a failing bearing, but this method usually implies to change several rollers because the maintenance team is not able to identify a single source of the noise. In recent years different attempts to measure the temperature of the bearings have been made, but the result is not accurate enough due to the proximity of the rollers in the idlers

The Seismic Interactive Interpretation Workstation (IIW) integrates various sets of geophysical and geological data to form a network of information which is stored in a database. Computer models are generated from known drillhole information and later correlated with the processed seismic data. Seismic color processing adds another dimension to the interpretation process. Complex trace attributes provide better definition of subtle features not easily observed from black and white sections. Utilizing the computer workstation, the explorationist gains valuable insight and conducts more intelligent interpretation of seismic data through a more comprehensive network of data analysis.

Now in its 40th year of commercial operation, the HYL process has evolved into a modem, highly efficient and economical technology -HYL III. The technology offers high productivity, minimum energy and water consumption, electricity co-generation, raw material flexibility, premium quality DRI/HBI, and is highly versatile for meeting the specific needs of each user. A historical review as well as recent developments and future plans are presented in this paper.

"Newmont Mining Corporation operates the Yanacocha mine in Perú and the gold milling section of the property includes a Sulfidization-Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) plant to remove copper from pregnant leach solution. Since its commissioning in 2008, the plant has been intermittently operated as needed to remove copper upstream of a carbon adsorption circuit. However, starting in 2015 Newmont expects the plant to operate on a more continuous basis in response to higher copper ores that will be processed in the gold mill. In anticipation of this, Newmont conducted a campaign in May 2014 with stockpiled high-copper ore to evaluate performance of the SART plant with elevated levels of copper in feed solution. Results from the campaign demonstrated the SART plant is capable of efficiently treating high-copper leach solution. During the campaign, leach solution copper levels ranged from about 100 to 700 mg/L, and copper removals ranging from about 56% to +99% were achieved. The median copper removal efficiency observed during the campaign was about 94%. The primary plant modification determined necessary following the campaign was the need to improve consistency with sulfide dosing. INTRODUCTION Copper removal from cyanide leach solution can be affected through the addition of sulfide at acidic pH to precipitate copper sulfide as a solid. There has been renewed interest in the process in the past several years due to the increasingly common issue of high copper levels in cyanide leach solutions. The term Sulfidization- Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) is used as an acronym for the process according to the primary unit operations utilized. At a pH of approximately 4.0 to 5.0, the addition of soluble sulfide to a copper-bearing leach solution will result in the precipitation of copper sulfide (Cu2S) solid. The overall acidification and sulfidization reaction is (assuming the use of sulfuric acid for pH adjustment): 2Cu(CN)3-2 + 3H2SO4 + S-2 ? Cu2S(s) + 6HCN(aq) + 3SO4-2 The above reaction is written relative to the copper-cyanide complex 2Cu(CN)3-2, though analogous reactions also take place with the other common copper-cyanide complexes Cu(CN)2- and Cu(CN)4-3. Sulfide in the above reaction (S-2) is normally supplied as sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) purchased in solid or concentrated liquid form. Two characteristics of this reaction that are beneficial to a leaching operation are: 1. Copper is removed from solution as Cu2S (synthetic chalcocite) solid, which can then be sold to a smelter for its copper value. 2. Cyanide that is complexed with copper in the leach solution is released as free cyanide, thereby regenerating cyanide that can be recycled to the leaching operation for continued use."
