This paper deals with the daily work of operating geologists and should be of interest to recent graduates. Working with development and production is quite different from exploration and many of the required skills and techniques must be learned on the job. Try to obtain your first position at a mine where good geological work is being done because it is important that you establish a solid foundation by learning valid techniques. Many do not! Those who desire to work in exploration are well advised to spend the initial two or three years at an operating mine where they will deal daily with an orebody during development and mining. Attempt to understand the controls of ore deposition and be interested in all phases of the operation. Learn something about factors which can adversely affect profitability and you will be a better explorationist.

We have all heard a great deal about how various projects were financed or certain companies were successful in obtaining a bank loan. There are many more projects and companies who fail to get the money they need. At least a portion of these failures, and a large percentage of the frustrations connected with even the successful financings, are a result of not understanding the process of obtaining money. Recent years have seen a proliferation of sources available to finance minerals operations, but let me assure you that these represent only a minor portion of the minerals financing market. The fundamental source of borrowed money to almost all minerals related companies remains the banks. Therefore, understanding the "Loan Approval Process" can easily mean the difference between getting the money or not. In the following pages I hope to provide some insight into what I define as the loan approval process. Having pre-offered my definition, I intend to delineate the various stages of the process and the planning and information I believe should be contained in each. My ultimate goal is to help you think like a banker and, in so doing, stay on top of the process so that you can successfully obtain the funding necessary for your projects.

When looking for indicators for the mining business ? and these days who isn?t? ? one might need to look no further than the SME Annual Meeting. Held in Phoenix, AZ Feb. 28 to March 3, the meeting was, by almost any measure, a record-breaking success. Attendance included 4,937 industry professionals. Many of whom, feeling rejuvenated following the worst economic recession since the great depression, were greeted with a record 630 exhibits and 103 technical sessions covering all aspects of the mining and minerals business. Adding to the general optimism of the future was a celebration of the past and re-cent achievements in safety and health. The theme of this year?s meeting was ?Celebrating 100 Years of Mining Research? and the emphasis on advancements in safety was evident from the keynote address that kicked off the conference, to the field trips, to the Resolution and Safford mines that concluded the meeting.

Lime is one of the largest volume chemicals produced in the United States. In 1979 approximately 21 million tons were produced. Lime is, in fact, second only to sulfuric acid as the largest volume basic chemical produced. Lime, also known as quick lime (calcium oxide) and hydrate lime (calcium hydroxide), is the principle alkali used in a multitude of industrial processes. In addition to its use as a principle industrial alkali, lime has experienced dramatic growth in four general market areas during the past 30 years. These four areas are: 1. Water Treatment - Lime is used extensively in treating and purifying water for industrial and potable use, Although significant tonnage is shipped to this market of municipal and industrial water treatment plants, the end-users are widely spread geographically and individual shipments are relatively low tonnage. Leach dumps in Butte are relatively new in comparison with older established dumps in other areas throughout the West. With the exception of one 10 million ton dump, all dumps have been formed on a prepared base. This is necessary because the entire leach dump area overlies an alluvial fill which varies in depth from 100 to 400 feet and through which solution would be lost. Preparation of the leach pad consists of first removing all vegetative material and compacting the exposed surface with rollers. This surface is covered with a 4" layer of minus 1" crushed rock which in turn is roller compacted. A 3" compacted layer of asphalt hot mix is then applied to the crushed rock surface. Final sealing is effected by a 1/4'? coating of catalytically applied hot asphalt. Dump leaching was inaugurated in 1964. First solution applied was wholly made up of mine water pumped to surface through a central pump shaft. Sulfuric acid was added on surface at a surge pond to control pH of the leach solution. Acid addition is necessary not only to benefit the leach dumps, but to prevent the formation of ocher scale within the pipe line distribution system. Mine water pH is on the order of 2.8. The combination of ferrous and ferric iron as well as magnesium and aluminum salts is such that ocher forms at a pH of 2.38. It is therefore mandatory to control pH at 2.0. Dump effluent pH is held at 2.3 or less.

"INTRODUCTION The Crossrail project provides an East-West link across London enabling an additional 200 million journeys each year linking up major business centres and existing transportation interchanges, while reducing congestion at street level and within the current underground system. The project has built major structures in Sprayed Concrete Linings (SCL), including 5 new stations, 6 crossover caverns and numerous passages, adits and ventilation tunnels. Construction has taken approximately 4 years, and has involved the spraying of over 200,000m3 of concrete. At the start of the project there was a lack of available records from previous projects concerning concrete falls, which hindered risk assessments and the ability to make meaningful comparisons around spraying or material performance. This paper redresses this lack of data by providing information on falls experienced on this project and makes recommendations to assist future projects. Construction Methods Table 1 below summarises the main contracts with elements of permanent SCL. The listed primary lining lengths include pilot tunnels, side drift tunnels and enlargements as separate tunnels.A range of construction sequences were used in order to deal with the design requirements, geometry, and the ground and ground water conditions. The following briefly summarises the build up by layers, with typical design dimensions provided for a platform sized tunnel (approximately 9m internal diameter), excluding tolerance allowances. Some linings were sprayed in more than one layer to allow for inclusion of reinforcement layers or to avoid a too aggressive build-up of thickness: •,Initial shotcrete, or sealing, layer (ISL) of 75mm followed by a Primary Lining (PL) of 300mm. •,Regulating layer of 40mm followed by a Waterproof membrane (Sprayed membrane, 3-6mm). •,Secondary lining (SL) of 250mm with a separate sprayed fire protection layer (FPL) of 50mm."

INTRODUCTION In the last twelve years, underground stoping methods at the Homestake Gold Mine have evolved from open cut-and-fill with jacklegs, cribbed raises and electric slushers to ramp-based mechanized cut-and-fill (MCF) and vertical crater retreat (VCR) with dieselpowered loaders, trucks and drill jumbos. The evolution was swift. Unfortunately, ventilation practices have had trouble keeping pace. Stope ventilation is still too dependent on auxiliary fans and coolers. A single large MCF stope might contain up to eight headings, each of which requires significant ventilation resources when a diesel loader is present. Air is shortcircuited all too frequently through mined-out VCR panels. These factors and the recent rapid decent of the center of mining prompted a study to improve ventilation practices and to more accurately project future requirements. BACKGROUND In 1992, the underground portion of the Homestake Gold Mine produced 8336 kg of gold from 1407 ktons of ore (268,000 oz from 1,551,000 st). The ore is hosted in low to medium grade meta-sediments. Stoping took place from 420 to 2347 m below the surface (1400 to 7700-ft levels). The weighted center of mining was 1662 m deep (5450-ft level) in 1990 and is projected to be 1890 m (6200-ft) in 1993. The deepest level is 2440 m (8000-ft) where the virgin rock temperature (VRT) is 56.1°C (133F). The mine is ventilated by 504 m3/s (1,069,000 cfm) measured at mid-exhaust-circuit density. The air-conditioning system includes an 8.1 MWR (2300 ton) controlled recirculation plant, a 2.0 MWR (580 ton) chilled water plant, a 1.0 MWR (290 ton) exploration drift refrigeration plant, 28 spot-coolers totaling 3.4 MWR (960 tons) and 35 spray coolers totaling 1.5 MWR (420 tons). The mine employs 117 diesel units with a total nameplate rating of 7961 kW (10,672 hp). These units include twenty-four 1.5m3 (2-yd) loaders, twenty-six 2.7m3 (3.5-yd) loaders, fourteen 3.8m3 (5-yd) and two 7.6m3 (10-yd) trucks, and assorted utility vehicles and drill jumbos. THE STUDY In April 1991, the University of Nevada-Reno (Mackay School of Mines) and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology cooperated with Homestake on an MCF study. Mackay instrumented a stope with thermocouples, air velocity meters and hygrometers (Duckworth, 1992). South Dakota Tech conducted a finite-elements computer analysis of a back-filled MCF stope with/without light-weight shotcrete insulation on the sidewalls and back (Chellam, 1992). Homestake conducted an empirical analysis of deep-level MCF stoping. This paper describes the Homestake study. Twenty-three of the forty MCF stopes deeper than 1800 m were surveyed at least once during the last quarter of 1992. The stopes not included were being cable-bolted or back-filled. Figure 1 shows the complexity of one of the ramp-based stoping areas included in the survey. This particular stope has six separate production headings. A baseline wallrock heat load was derived for each stope or heading from psychrometric calculations. Broken ore, waste rock fill and fissure water were noted when present and the effects included in the baseline heat load. Other heat sources often mentioned in the literature such as metabolic heat from workers, heat from explosives and small electric loads were neglected. Fan heat was considered part of the ramp & crosscut heat load and thus not included in the study. Diesel heat was addressed separately. RESULTS Survey results, plotted as the heat flux against VRT, are shown in Figure 2. The equation for the regression line is: W/m2 = 2.1236*VRT - 75.405 The 0.31 correlation coefficient is poor which implies that the results should be used cautiously. Techniques utilized to incorporate geological data in computer modeling and ore reserve estimation have undergone considerable evolution during the past fifteen years. Computer analysis and evaluation of two precious metal deposits are presented as examples of innovative computer techniques developed at Asarco. The first is a gold deposit occurring in a steeply dipping Pre-Cambrian greenstone sequence. The second is a manto-like manganiferous silver deposit occurring in a relatively flat sequence of Late-Paleozoic sediments. In both deposits, four sub-horizontal zones of geological influence are evaluated.

The stability of underground openings for deep mines is critical, since incorrect orientation or geometry of shaft, stope, and accessways often results in the failure of openings due to high stress concentrations. Current state-of-the-art procedures for the design of underground openings are largely based on rules of thumb, experience, and trial and error. Rules of thumb are invariably based on the past experience of the designer and may not remain optimal as the depth and complexity of mine workings increase. Often, as conditions change, and as the interaction between geology, in-situ stress conditions, and mine openings grows more complex, the cost of maintaining structural integrity becomes prohibitive. Existing design procedures for deep mines are rapidly becoming inadequate as mines are worked at greater depths. For example, in the Coeur d' Alene Mining District, several million dollars are spent for inspection, repair, and maintenance on a regular schedule, largely as a result of inadequate design. In these types of situations, it is of critical importance that a new design methodology be developed for the layout and design of underground openings.

The Broken Hill proprietary company Limited grate kiln pellet plant (1) located at Whyalla in South Australia commenced production on May 13, 1968. During commissioning, about 25,000 long tons of fluxed pellets were produced. Plant performance was satisfactory and acceptable under the plant guarantee. For production reasons, it was necessary to curtail the fluxed pellet run and revert to the production of acid pellets. In 1970, some 250,000 long tons of fluxed pellets were produced under varying operating conditions to determine the requirements for optimum quality pellets at acceptable production rates. In excess of 180,000 long tons of these fluxed pellets were exported to Japan. Problems experienced in production of the fluxed pellets are detailed, and the quality of the fluxed pellets compared to that of normal acid pellets produced at Whyalla. Brief Plant Details Run of mine ore treated was predominantly soft and friable and contained an average of 66 per cent Fe, 1.7 per cent Si02 and 1.8 per cent Al203. The main iron mineral in the ore was hematite with some martite also present. Plant feed was ground dry in ball mills 11 ft in diameter by 29 ft long to a Blaine surface area of 1600 sq.cm/g and the ground ore was wetted in a pug mill. Balling was carried out in balling drums 10 ft in diameter by 32 ft long. Induration equipment included an eighteen windbox grate 12 ft 2 in. wide by 164 ft 1 in. long, a rotary kiln 18 ft 6 in. diameter by 118 ft 8 in. long and an annular cooler 50 ft mean diameter by 7 it wide.

Air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation is one of the new promising technologies. Numerous applications have been successfully tested since its conception; nevertheless, research and development efforts have continued to provide for further improvements with respect to operating conditions and design considerations. Results from experimental studies on bubbles generation in the ASH system are presented in this paper. Bubble size distributions generated during ASH operation have been determined using a high-speed photographic technique. The influence of many factors including surfactant concentration, water flowrate, and porous tube pore size has been studied. Test results indicate that these process variables have a profound effect on the bubble size distribution. With an increase in surfactant concentration or water flowrate (shear field) the bubble size distributions become narrower and shift toward smaller average bubble diameters. However, the influence of pore size is more complicated. Depending on the experimental conditions the average bubble size was found to range from about 100 to 300 microns in diameter.

Are the results of an exploration program worth the cost? This is a question I suspect many of you are familiar with and, theoretically at least, it is an easy question to answer. The answer, of course, lies in comparing the future earnings stream the program is expected to generate, to the present value of the cost of carrying it out. While historical costs can be determined without much difficulty, estimating the value of a future earnings stream involves all sorts of assumptions regarding future costs, metal prices, inflation rates and an appropriate discount factor; and in the context in which the question arises, requires additional assumptions about mineral deposits which have yet to be discovered. As a practical matter, this kind of approach isn't likely to produce a very convincing answer; certainly not one convincing enough to satisfy a skeptical audience; nor one likely to temper the illusions of recent converts to mineral exploration, who are convinced that if enough money is spent, profitable discoveries will inevitably follow. Within broad limits, however, I believe it is possible to analyze the costs and results of gold exploration in the U.S.A. over the past 20 odd years in a useful manner. And while such an analysis is imperfect, it will provide some insight into this fascinating subject.

In our comparison of California and Turkish colemanites, we should first place the discussion in context. In order to exclude technical considerations, which are not germane to this paper, we must make the manifest and basic observation that if colemanite were not acceptable for the production of glass products it would not be used, and we would not be interested in this comparison at all. Suffice it to say that the colemanites, being calcium borates, provide a necessary flux in glass manu¬facture, together with the requisite degree of physical strength and chemical durability which can be achieved only by the use in glass of a. flux substanti¬ally free from alkali; so the sodium borates are automatically excluded from the production of textile fibers. Thus we have today under consideration only California colemanite, Turkish cole mite, and, because it provides a degree of competition to both, ABA, or anhy¬drous boric acid, which, although it is a refined intermediate and of much higher cost, it is also of a much higher degree of purity, and its characteristics can easily be modified to produce a desired end product, so we must include it in any consideration of high quality borates. [Calcim Borate Pentahydrate] Colemanite is a [calcium pentahydrate,] with the formula Ca2B6011.5H20. It has a theoretical B203 content of 50.8%.

Mill #4 processes mildly refractory ore from Carlin Trend deposits. Diagnostic analysis of plant operating data was used to generate a mathematical model containing the key parameters influencing the gold recovery. The model was used to direct modifications to plant operating practice. The cyanide dosing strategy was changed to reduce preg-rob gold masses and cut reagent consumption A finer grind was achieved without capital investment. The density in CIL was lowered, and tighter control was exercised over plant throughput. These changes resulted in a recovery increase of at least 2%, worth $111,000/month at $300/oz, and concomitant reagent cost savings of $55,000/month.

The majority of the regulations in Part 75 for underground coal mines have been in effect since March of 1970, almost nine years now. Although there have been some additions each year in specific areas where the need became apparent or the statute required some action, the bulk was promulgated on March 28, 1970 for the purpose of clarifying the statutory provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Many of those regulations were derived from the Federal Mine Safety Code, or from experience gained by the Bureau of Mines in the enforcement of Public Law 552. Upon passage of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, these same regulations remained in effect and the statutory requirements of the Act placed a responsibility upon the Secretary of Labor to promulgate additional regulations in specific areas not previously covered. The Federal inspectorate has received formal training at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in the proper application of the regulations, as well as routine retraining and special training courses subsequent to the promulgation of new regulations. With some exceptions, the vast majority of these regulations are nothing more than good mining practice. Basically, the regulatory problems are two-fold. There are a few specific regulations that, under certain circumstances, compliance is nearly, if not actually, impossible. There is non-uniform application of enforcement of regulations by the inspectorate based on opinions developed from personal experience of inspectors or lack of experience. The record is replete with examples of overzealous inspectors applying regulations that either do not exist or have been stretched far beyond the intent of the regulations.

Over the past four years, the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University has presented a number of papers on operations research in the coal industry before various AIME meetings and meetings of other societies. These papers have been followed up by further presentations in the technical press. The emphasis of all of these papers has been to demonstrate applications of operations research to the solution of numerous types of coal industry problems. In each case, effort has been made to demonstrate that operations research does not require extensive knowledge of computer science or use of sophisticated higher mathematics. In fact, for most applications, satisfactory results can be obtained by a single individual in a minimum of time with no aids other than a pencil and paper and a knowledge of basic arithmetic. The most recent efforts by the Coal Research Bureau have been directed toward the continuing industry problem of optimizing the location of mining facilities. Preliminary work in this area was presented before the Central Appalachian Section of AIME and subsequently published in the May, 1972, issue of Coal Age. This initial presentation illustrated techniques for determining optimum locations of facilities based upon material transport effort under the assumption of constant cost per ton mile of haulage effort. The present paper will expand upon this earlier work and introduce economic factors. In the design of a mine or mining system, careful consideration must be given to the sites selected for each element of the system. Optimum placement of facilities is vital to minimize capital and operating cost. Thus, barring unfavorable geological conditions or other exceptional factors, facilities should be located at those points which represent the minimum cumulative cost over the life of the property. Most cost factors are independent, or essentially independent of the location of fixed facilities. A series of batch flotation tests was performed on chalcopyrite-quartzite, pyrrhotite-quartzite, and on chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-quartzite mixtures. Pulp potential measurements in the flotation tests of single sulfide minerals indicated that each sulfide mineral had its own optimum potential range for flotation. When these results were used to select the potential ranges for the separation of the two minerals from their mixture, their flotation responses changed and the selectivity of separation was adversely affected. A possible mechanism involving surface alteration through galvanic interaction is discussed. A method to improve the selectivity of flotation separation was proposed.

This paper will describe several modifications to design of con­ventional oxide gold heap leaching. They are targeted at reduc­ing costs and simplifying heap operations. These modifications were conceptualized during consulting work on over 90 differ­ent heap leaches. In 1995, a unique opportunity arose to imme­diately apply all of these design concepts to the permitting and construction of a new facility at the American Girl Mine in southeastern California. American Girl Mine has operated since 1987. In April 1995, the mine faced a situation with grave consequences for cash flow. Approval for mining of a new ore zone, Oro Cruz, had just been granted, after lengthy delays by California regula­tors. All existing pad space would be filled by October. Only 6 months were available, and new pad siting and design were still undecided. Permitting of a new pad had not begun. Options were quickly reviewed. A strong criteria for pad site selection and design was ease of permitting. There was also a strong desire to install a system that would achieve better met­allurgical recovery and reduced operating costs, compared to previous heaps at this mine. One site offered the best chance for rapid permitting. It was the site of the original 1987-90 heap leach. This already dis­turbed ground contained 1.6 million tons of heaped ore. The old heap had just completed detoxification and was about to be signed off as a Group C waste, ready for reclamation. Instead of recontouring and revegetating the old heap, which the reclamation plan anticipated, we offered BLM and the County something even better. We proposed to off-load much of the detoxed old heap, and reuse the space. The off-loaded material would be back-filled into the original open pit, imme­diately adjacent. While the footprint of the proposed new pad was much larger, the reuse of disturbed ground, and backfilling of the open pit, had very strong appeal to the regulators. Our permitting strategy included the technical design of the proposed new facility. Many of the new design details also appealed to the regulators, particularly the "zero active ponds" concept.
