INTRODUCTION The Alimak method of raising (Fig. 1) was intro¬duced in 1957. Because of its flexibility, economy, and speed, it soon became the most used system of raising in the world. With the same unit, raises of various areas, inclinations, and lengths can be driven. Air-motor¬-driven raise climbers normally are used in mines with short raises (Fig. 2). For longer raises electric or diesel-¬hydraulic drives are used. The Alimak raise climber is designed entirely in ac¬cordance with the instructions of the Swedish Board of Industrial Safety (Arbetarskyddsstyrelsen). There are good margins of safety concerning the breaking strength of the material and the raise climber comprises safety devices and features that practically eliminate the risks of accidents. The drive gear of air-driven climbers is equipped with an air-operated brake which is automatically activated when air for the motors is shut off. There is a safety device which activates automatically at overspeed and a speed-regulated brake for descent by gravity, by which the raise climber can be taken down to the bottom of the raise in case of cutoff of the air supply. The raise climber climbs along a pin rack welded to a guide rail which also comprises pipes for air and water. The guide. rail can be extended by using 1- or 2-m (3.2¬or 6.4-ft) sections as the driving progresses. Each guide rail section is bolted to the rock wall by special expan¬sion bolts of Alimak design. Men ride up to the face in the cage, traveling com¬fortably and easily while material is transported on the platform. There is no dangerous climbing up ladders. The men are well protected during ascent and arrive in good condition at the face. The greatest advantages of raise climber systems are flexibility and versatility. Greater awareness of the increasing need to develop supplementary energy sources is accelerating us towards many basic decisions regarding future utilization of mined energy materials -- uranium, coal, oil sands and oil shale. The latter material comprises a major potential source of oil which will require creation of unusually large and low-cost underground mining systems. In this paper, the author briefly outlines and analyzes several of the factors which continue to provide the somewhat unique character of oil shale nine planning and mine operation.

This document describes the challenging task of mining through tiebacks using a 21'-8" diameter Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) as part of the Ship Canal Water Quality Project. The mining operation involves navigating through 17 tie-backs that are evenly spaced at 8-foot intervals, with many intersecting the full face of the cutterhead. Detailed analysis and review of TBM parameters specific to this area have been conducted to ensure operational efficiency and safety. Hyperbaric interventions have been planned and coordinated, encompassing pre-mining preparations, continuous monitoring and adjustments during the mining process, as well as post-mining measures. The document highlights the complexity and importance of strategic planning and execution to successfully overcome the tie-back intersections during the mining operation.

Coal waste materials inhibit the direct establishment of vegetation due to adverse physical and chemical properties, particularly low water retention and high potential acidity. The Moss #1 coal refuse pile is located in Dickenson County, Virginia, and was idled in the late 1980s with little topsoil resources available for final closure. The refuse was acidic (Total S = 0.38%; pH = 3.6), black in color and high (70%) in coarse fragments. The refuse also had a low water-holding capacity (4.5% in < 2.0-mm fraction). A small plot experiment was established on the refuse pile to evaluate the effects of liming rates (50% and 100% of lime requirements) and topsoil thickness (15, 30 and 60 cm) on vegetative growth and leachate quality. Liming and topsoil amendment increased the surface soil pH from <4.0 to >6.0 over a two-year period, which resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than the control plots. All topsoil treatments resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than plots treated with lime only. This was due to improved surface soil physical and chemical properties. A topsoil treatment of 60 cm gave the thickest vegetative cover and biomass yield. Such a treatment, however, would be cost-prohibitive at this location. Applica¬tion of 27Mg ha`1 of lime to the refuse surface along with 15 cm of topsoil produced acceptable two-year vegetative cover and biomass, and this appeared to be the optimal treatment for this particular situation. Both liming and topsoil had no affect on leachate pH and the electrical conductivity of leachates collected below the plots. This suggests that surface revegetation will have little effect on the quality of water draining through the pile. Therefore, long-term water-treatment requirements may not be reduced by successfully revegetating the pile surface.

Introduction The depth of open-pit mines continues to increase. The typical designed depth for large quarries is now in the 300 to 600 m (1,000 to 2,000 ft) range, with some quarries even reaching depths of 700 to 800 m (2,300 to 2,600 ft). The cost of handling material from such deep mines can be 60% to 70% of the total cost. The capacity of using a cyclic means of transport, such as trucks or skip hoists, continues to drop as the depth of the mine increases. In addition to the problem of maintaining relatively low slope angles for haul roads, increases in environment pollution and increased fuel consumption make the use of trucks ineffective below 100 to 150 m (300 to 500 ft). In handling large quantities of bulky materials, i.e., more than 15 to 20 Mt/a (16 to 22 million stpy), under fixed terminal points, belt conveyors are preferable in almost in all cases. An exception is when the lump size of the load is too high for the conveyor to handle. Belt conveyors in mines can handle loads having a maximum lump size of no more than 250 to 300 mm (10 to 12 in.). The use of a movable crusher prior to the belt conveyor in an open-pit mine would make the process very expensive. Such an operation could not compete with truck haulage on a cost basis. Belt-car conveyor The main factor that restricts the lump size for conventional belt conveyors is collision impacts between the load-carrying belt and idlers. These impacts are completely eliminated in the belt-car conveyor, which was previously described by Mulukhov (1977). The unique feature of the conveyor is that the load-carrying belt is supported by moving cars. Each car consists of a troughed cross strap that supports the belt with the load and two rollers, on which the cars move along upper and lower rails. Cars are connected by two endless chains revolving over sprockets. The system uses conventional drive pulleys, tail pulleys and return idlers. There are no fasteners between the carrying belt and the car cross straps. The conveyor belt simply drives the cars along by the force of friction between the belt and the straps. A belt-car conveyor was first installed in 1970 at the Karatau mining operation in Kazakhstan. The system was an elevating conveyor with an inclination of 20° and was located on the final part of the truck haul road. The conveyor transferred blasting phosphate ore from the quarry to the crushing plant. A bunker was mounted between the trucks and the conveyor. The maximum lump size was typically 1,200 mm (48 in.). However, there were some lumps as large as 1,500mm (60 in.), which was greater than even the belt width (Fig. 1). Because the prototype belt-car conveyor was intended only for industrial trails, it had a relatively short length of about 50 m (160 ft). Nevertheless, the conveyor yielded a substantial profit over the cost of truck haulage. Naturally, the first question one might ask is why such a system is not now widely used. The reason was the further development of a huge transporting complex for the whole quarry at the base of the belt-car conveyor. After successful industrial trials from 1971 through 1973, which demonstrated the systems engineering feasibility, the State Planning Committee of the USSR included the development of the belt-car conveyor in its plan for the development of the national economy. However, mistakes were made. First, a single organization was not in charge of the development. Second, a plant that was not specialized in belt conveyors was put in charge of the design and manufacturing of the conveyor system. In addition, the crusher was installed before the stacker, which negated the major advantages of the belt-car conveyor. "The proposed Baltimore Red Line light rail system includes a 3.4 mile downtown tunnel (DTT) with five underground stations. The design of the underground stations involved overcoming several challenges, including limited right-of-way, high groundwater and uplift pressures, and metamorphic rock within the station depths. An innovative design was developed to maximize the internal station space while minimizing cost. The station designs use slurry walls for temporary and permanent support and groundwater control. Depths within rock are supported with cast-in-place concrete walls, the thickness of which are minimized through the use of permanent rock anchors for support of the rock mass and slurry wall toes. Permanent tiedown anchors are used for uplift resistance, which minimizes the station depths, volume of rock excavation, and the volume of deadweight concrete. Design considerations regarding individual elements and overall integration of the slurry walls, CIP walls, and multiple anchor types are presented.INTRODUCTION The Baltimore Red Line (BRL) project is a proposed light rail transit line for the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) that runs east to west through Baltimore City and County. The project includes the Downtown Tunnel (DTT) consisting of 3.0 miles of twin running tunnels, two portals, five underground stations, and a pedestrian tunnel, as shown in Figure 1. The tunnels have an outside diameter of 21.8 feet and are designed to be mined using pressurized face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). The stations, portals, and the pedestrian tunnel are designed as cut-and-cover structures using slurry walls (concrete diaphragm walls) for both temporary support of excavation (SOE) and permanent structural walls. The dimensions of the five underground stations are summarized in Table 1. Design challenges included limited right-of-way (ROW), challenging soils conditions, strong metamorphic rock within the station depths, and high groundwater conditions. The final station designs included innovative use of slurry walls, tieback anchors, rock anchors, and tiedown anchors."

"Investigating abandoned mine subsidence is often a difficult task because many factors, both mining- and nonmining-related, can affect the possibility and the formation process of surface subsidence events over abandoned underground room-and-pillar mines. Among them, mine water frequently plays an important role in causing such subsidence events. However, mine water could also serve the purpose of preventing subsidence. The dewatering of abandoned room-and-pillar mines has been identified as the main cause for a number of serious mine subsidence events in the past.In this work, the mechanism of mine water to prevent surface subsidence over abandoned room-and-pillar coal mines was studied. Two mathematical models are proposed to quantify the potential effects of mine water on the structural stability of mine pillars, roof and floor as well as the potential for causing surface subsidence. The models are validated with an actual case. IntroductionThe potential for room-and-pillar mining operations to induce surface subsidence is mainly dependent on the recovery ratio in the underground mines that directly relates to the stability of pillars. Normally, if the recovery ratio is less than 50 percent, the mine pillars are sufficient to support the overburden strata without their collapse in a sufficiently large contiguous area. Consequently, there will be no surface subsidence. However, if the recovery ratio is greater than 70 percent, the pillars are too small to support the overburden strata and can cause immediate surface subsidence. In 1993, a mathematical model and program was developed and proposed (Luo and Peng, 1993) to predict surface subsidence caused by high-extraction, roomand- pillar mining. When the recovery ratio is between 50 and 70 percent, the mine pillars could be loaded near their critical condition and, therefore, the surface subsidence is uncertain to develop. If the surface subsidence did not occur immediately, mine water starts to fill the underground openings. If thick, clay-type rock layers are presented in the mine roof, floor or pillars, they can be considerably weakened by mine water and cause surface subsidence. The techniques to investigate subsidence events over inactive room-and-pillar coal mines caused by the weakening effects of raising mine water to the claystone immediate roof and floor were presented in Luo (2009, 2011)."

Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered critical minerals for the industrial and defense sectors. In 2018, the U.S. Department of the Interior presented the final list of critical minerals that are vital to the U.S. economy and defense [1], which included REEs among other mineral commodities. REEs are not rare, despite their name, but economically viable deposits of REEs can be found only in certain geographical areas, and the political and social conditions characterizing these areas may not always be in favor of mining operations. Mining operations may be placed in great operational and financial risk if operations are planned in such areas. Erroneous decisions by decision makers may lead to a chain of events that can completely shut down a mining project.

Brunswick Mining, employing approximately 1600 employees, is located 40 km south of the city of Bathurst in north eastern New Brunswick. The mine has operated as two lead-zinc operations - the underground mine(No.12) and the open pit mine (No.6). The open pit orebody is presently being&apos; mined by underground methods. It is expected that the No.12 mine will furnish the entire ore supply by the end of 1981. The flotation practice prior to 1971 has been described by Neumann and Schnarr(1) and by Erskine (2). More recently, the current flotation practice has been described by McTavish(3) and deals with some major circuit modifications between 1972 and 1978. The period 1978 to 1980 has seen the completion of. a major flotation cell replacement and expansion program for the No.6 concentrator, and the implementation of computer control in the No. 12 CuPb and Zn flotation circuits.

Lidar scanning has become an increasingly popular tool for documenting underground excavations; however, high costs of traditional mechanical electrical lidar hardware, software, and training have limited the frequency at which lidar scans can be performed. Additionally, traditional scanning can be time consuming because multiple scan positions are necessary. With Apple’s incorporation of low-cost mobile solidstate lidar on select smartphones and tablets, lidar is becoming more tractable for everyday construction documentation similar to construction photo collection with smartphones. Here, we describe benefits of mobile solid-state lidar and describe several practical applications for use in underground construction, such as documenting the working face, over-blast, and geologic features of tunnels.

Some technical developments of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation Program which are of general application in geochemical exploration are being studied. Results of stream water and suspended and bottom sediment analyses are compared for an area near Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Variations of uranium content of water samples with time in the North Carolina Piedmont are seen to correlate with rainfall. Ground water samples from coastal and piedmont areas were analyzed for helium. All media sampled provide useful information when properly analyzed and interpreted as part of a total geological analysis of an area.

If it was all so clear I would not have been "asked" to write this article. For those of us on the contractors’ side of the fence, joint venture business relationships have been a part of life for a long time. But even for contractors, there can be a bit of confusion, and it normally begins on bid day.How often have you received bid results and wondered (out loud, usually), "Who the hell are the Lake Mead Intake Constructors"? or the "Regional Connector Constructors"? Once you get past the name, you see that there is nothing behind Oz’s curtain other than a couple of contractors bidding and building work in an attempt to make a profit. So take a few minutes to read the rest of this, and I’ll do my best to dispel a few mythWhat is a joint venture?In some form or fashion, joint ventures are as old as industry itself. In the United States, some of the earliest (and largest) joint ventures involved the railroads and oil companies in the late 1800s. In the United States’ underground construction industry, joint venture names such as, Healy-Greenfield, Green and Winston, Gates & Fox and Walsh, Shea-Ball, Kenny-Paschen and S&M-Traylor bring back memories of successful joint ventures that operated over many projects.There are nearly as many definitions for joint ventures (JVs) as there are attorneys. A short and simple definition is, "an association of two or more companies engaged in a singular, for-profit business enterprise without actual partnership or incorporation." That’s it. Two or more contractors decide to partner up for one or more projects. One benefit of the JV relationship is that the partners typically do not need to file incorporation documents, or articles of organization within the state where they intend to operate. So it is a relatively easy business arrangement to pull together. Other benefits of the JV arrangement include: • Oportunities to gain new expertise and capacity.• The ability for firms to move into new geographic markets.• JV agreements are not long-term commitments.• Sharing of financial support for a project.• Sharing of financial risks within a project. between the partners.• Can complicate dispute resolutions with the owner and between partners"

Launching a full-size pressurized-face Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in difficult ground conditions is always challenging. Recently, few projects have innovated the process by scaling the trenchless method of pipe jacking, and modified steel bell approach, to facilitate the launching of a full-size TBM without the need for large and deep trenches, starter/tail tunnels, or for incrementally installing supporting gear as the machine advances. This paper presents three such projects; evaluates the post-bid contractor proposed modifications; details the innovative use of pre-cast pipe segments to facilitate machine launch; and, provides an overall assessment of the benefits, challenges and lessons learned related to the modified approach.

The use of a series of thickeners for-washing of the slime fraction of a leached ore is not uncommon in the uranium industry; however, few ore processing mills have used a thickener circuit for washing leached total ore. The, common, practice is to wash the sand fraction in classifiers and, the slime fraction only in thickeners. At the Uravan mill of Union Carbide Nuclear, Company, a total ore&apos; acid leach is employed to extract uranium values from sandstone ores. These leached ores are then washed at a nominal rate of from 1,000 to 1,300 tons per day in a series of washing thickeners. A typical screen. analysis of the ore being washed in these thickeners, is 25 percent -200 mesh, 3 percent +35 mesh and about, one&apos; percent +l4 mesh., The amount of slimes (-200 mesh) will vary from 20 to 30 percent s the mill receives ore from 150 different mines The washing liquor is acidic, from a pH of about 2 in the first thickener to 0.6 pH in the last thickener and of course ally acid duty equipment must be used. The Uravan mill of Union Carbide Nuclear Company is located in Montrose County, Colorado and is physically located on a canyon wall along the San Miguel river. The thickeners referred to in this, paper are located on top of the mesa above the canyon. For purposes of identification, these thickeners are numbered 1 through 8 from south to north.

Metal mining at great depths presents a number of serious challenges for mine operators. Among them is the high demand for fresh air required to cool down mine openings, evacuate noxious gases and contaminants and provide sufficient amounts of oxygen for miners. At the same time, modern mechanized mines extensively use diesel-powered load-haul-dump (LHD) machines, trucks and other mobile equipment. These vehicles not only emit exhaust gases and diesel particulate matter (DPM), but constitute an additional source of heat. As mine regulations get steadily more stringent with regard to air quality, the use of diesel engines has an additional adverse impact on ventilation costs. In this context, the present paper examines possible alternatives for diesel power trains, both those commercially available and those in development. They are reviewed with regard to their principles, required infrastructure, stage of technology development and progress. The questions of their flexibility, practicality and economic viability are also addressed. Finally, their possible benefits and potential for implementation in the conditions of deep metal mines are discussed. The paper concludes with short- to medium-term predictions concerning promising drive alternatives for vehicles destined to operate in deep metal mines.

Alkaline solution rinsing for decommissioning of an acid-leached residue was evaluated by column experiments, neutralization tests and solid characterization by XRD and SEM. It was found that consumption of a strong alkali during residue neutralization was much greater than that required to neutralize the soluble acidity. The excess alkalinity was consumed by solid-phase conversions unnecessary for the success of decommissioning. Alkaline rinsing did not reduce the time requirement for decommissioning when compared with plain water rinsing. Since no benefit is gained to compensate for the additional costs associated with excess alkali consumption, we conclude that strong alkaline solution rinsing is in fact inferior to simple water rinsing.

This Bureau of Mines report describes methane liberation trends from all U.S. coal mines liberating over 100 Mcfd (100,000 cfd) (2.8 Mm3/d). Detailed are results from the latest Bureau survey performed in 1985 and shown are mine and company name, location, coalbed and methane liberation quantity. The report shows that in 1985, there were 180 mines producing more than 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) and the total quantity of methane liberated by these mines was 303,900 Mcfd (8,605 Mm3/d). This data is compared with previous studies performed in 1971 , 1973, 1975, and 1980. From 1971 to 1985, there was a 10% decrease in the number of mines liberating at least 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) but there was a dramatic 34% increase of liberations from these mines. The increase seems to be caused by new mines being developed in deeper, gassier coalbeds, particularly in Alabama. Likewise, in comparing the ten highest liberating mines in 1975, 1980, and 1985, an increase in methane liberations each year was experienced. The report classifies mines by three levels of liberations: greater than 100 Mcfd but less than 500 Mcfd (2.8 to 14 Mm3/d); 500 Mcfd to 1 ,000 Mcfd (1 4 to 28 Mm3/d); and greater than 1,000 Mcfd (>28 Mm3/d). It was found that 87% of liberations were from mines producing over 1,000 Mcfd but these accounted for only 38% of all the mines in the study.

Existing acid mine drainage treatment techniques are not remedial In nature, i.e. though heavy metals can be removed from acid mine water, their presence in tailings and large quantities of these tailings tend to increase capital and operating cost for tailing management. This paper presents the results of a series of systematic tests which finally resulted In the development of the "ferrite" process for mine drainage of coal operations at ambient temperature. The role of pH, temperature, quantity of ferrous salt addition and degree of oxidation is investigated targeting the production of high emu spinel ferrites and effluent water complying regulatory standards with respect to Iron. manganese suspended solids and pH.

As national and international health and safety management system (HSMS) standards are voluntarily accepted or regulated into practice, organizations are making an effort to modify and integrate strategic elements of a connected management system into their daily risk management practices. In high-risk industries such as mining, that effort takes on added importance. The mining industry has long recognized the importance of a more integrated approach to recognizing and responding to sitespecific risks, encouraging the adoption of a risk-based management framework. Recently, the U.S. National Mining Association led the development of an industry-specific HSMS built on the strategic frameworks of ANSI: Z10, OHSAS 18001, The American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care, and ILO-OSH 2001. All of these standards provide strategic guidance and focus on how to incorporate a plan-do-check-act cycle into the identification, management and evaluation of worksite risks. This paper details an exploratory study into whether practices associated with executing a risk-based management framework are visible through the actions of an organization’s site-level management of health and safety risks. The results of this study show ways that site-level leaders manage day-to-day risk at their operations that can be characterized according to practices associated with a risk-based management framework. Having tangible operational examples of day-to-day risk management can serve as a starting point for evaluating field-level risk assessment efforts and their alignment to overall company efforts at effective risk mitigation through a HSMS or other processes.
