More than 70 km of main line and service tunnels have been excavated to date for crossing the Apennines between Bologna and Florence. A new design and construction approach, known as Analysis of the Controlled Deformation in Rock and Soils, (ADECO-RS), was adopted to tackle the extreme heterogeneity of the ground and the particular stress-strain conditions. The goal of this system is to obtain constant and predictable full section advance rates, even in very poor geology, with the highest possible level of safety and reliability. The execution of this gigantic project required the mobilization of 21 job-sites, with the concurrent operation of 30 excavation headings. The global production rates confirm the high quality of the design and the high level of industrialization reached during the construction stage, levels not previously obtained in similar conditions, using other approaches such as NATM.

Peng The highlights of this paper are : • The shield supports with lemniscate links will exert a tangential force on the roof strata, causing unnecessary and harmful roof movements, thus damaging the roof structure. The principal source of the tangential force is the horizontal movement of the point O, the pivotal joint between the canopy and the caving shield. When the support height is changed during setting, the point O will move along a curve upward and rearward toward the gob. As a result, it produces a vertical movement, causing the roof to move up a distance of ?d, and a horizontal movement toward the gob, creating vertical fractures in the roof. • The major purpose for employing the lemniscate-link system is to protect the hydraulic legs against the action of the bending moments induced by the tangential force that causes deformation or destruction of the legs. • Based on these two points, the author suggested that, in order to eliminate the harmful effects of the lemniscate-link system and strengthen its advantageous features, a shield support with a new design of that mechanism has been developed. With the new design, the conventional rigid lemniscate links are replaced by hydraulic rams. When the pressure inside the rams reaches a certain level, the ram will yield.

"‘Gas hydrate’ is the common term for a solid material formed from the combination of various gases as ‘guest’ and water as ‘host’. A series of large-scale scientific drilling and coring programmes conducted since 2000 revealed that natural gas hydrate exists in a wide variety of accumulations in the sediments. The scaled-up onshore and offshore field production tests during the last decade show that gas production technology will be realized to make gas production from gas hydrates viable in the future, recognizing its potentials as one of the future sustainable energy resources.The total produced gas was approximately 470 m3 by the hot water circulation method over 6 days of operation in the permafrost-associated Mallik 2002 project in the Mackenzie Delta of Canada. In the Mallik 2007-2008 project, the gas was successfully produced stably by the depressurization method for 6 days, up to 13,000 m3 cumulatively. The depressurization method applied in the Mallik test was shown to be an effective way to produce gas from gas hydrates. The Alaska field trial to inject mixed gas of CO2 and N2 to exchange CH4 in 2012 was successfully done for the first time to produce maximum 1,270 m3 per day. A remarkable achievement was made by Japan when it completed its first offshore production test in the Eastern Nankai Trough, producing approximately 120,000 m3 of methane by the depressurization method over 6 days in March 2013. The technical challenges and scientific uncertainties obtained from Nankai Trough production test provide Korea with more considerations as to the aspects of well completion, reservoir formation and seafloor stability, sand control, flow assurance, environmental monitoring, and etc., due to the different geological setting and geomechanical properties of the Ulleung Basin in Korea."

The search for precious metals opened up the American West. And Nevada was right in the heart of this development. In the mid-19th century, prospectors seeking gold roamed the hills of Nevada and discovered the ComstockLode. The development of this huge silver and gold deposit began in1859 and was responsible for Nevada’s early entry to statehood. Mining was Nevada’s first industry. In more recent years, the Nevada mining industry has led the nation in gold, silver and barite production. Nevada also produces many other minerals. These include aggregates, clays, copper, diatomite, dolomite, gypsum, lime and limestone, lithium and magnesium compounds, perlite, salt and silica. Even today, Nevada’s mining industry continues to be a major economic force in the state. The mining industry has made more than $10 billion in capital investments in Nevada since 1985. And the value of Nevada’s mineral production last year was about $2.7 billion.

In this decade of the 1.970's it is forecast that eight billion cubic yards of rock will be excavated from 400, 000 miles of new tunnels, drifts and other underground workings in the western world, according to estimates in a report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It is expected that the cost of this work will be in excess of $54 billion in constant 1970 dollars. Most of this underground excavation will be in mining -- 97% of the tunnel length and 89% of the volume - -the balance in construction. In addition to this huge excavating task, in the 18 developed nations of OECD, will be projects in the Communist Bloc and in the developing nations. Underground excavation requires the successful completion of three principle activities: A. Break -- to free rock from the solid work face. B. Remove-- to clear the work area of broken rock. C. Support -- to assure stability of rock surrounding the underground excavation and to eliminate risk of rock collapse. In today's fully mechanized excavation systems, continuous miners, roadheaders or tunnel borers, (A) break the rock loose from the face, and (B) remove broken rock with their mucking devices and load it onto belt conveyors, mine cars, trucks, or any other appropriate haulage system for disposal. The surge of activity in the solar energy market, spurred by government incentives, has created new and more efficient solar technologies, but issues surrounding land- and water-use have backlogged the full-scale development of solar farms. This paper explores siting solar power plants on degraded or polluted lands, such as mine tailings impoundments. Historically, mining and has been integral to Arizona?s economy, but has dwindled in relevance due to urban pressures and environmental regulations. Currently, it is legal to site solar power plants on degraded or polluted lands, but the question remains whether the economics of this degraded lands solar development is more favorable than developing pristine land. Therefore, we explore economics of developing mine tailings impoundments at both the institutional and financial level. Methods of research for this paper were interviews with government regulators, environmental advocacy organizations, farmers, and mining company executives. Financial models using extant tax incentives show a positive net present value for the installation of solar power plants, even when accounting for the costs of land remediation.

De Beers? Finsch diamond mine began operation in the 1960s as a surface project using the latest technology available. During the 1990s, the operation, located about 160 km (100 miles) west of Kimberley, South Africa, began its move as an underground mine. The earlier stages (Blocks 1, 2 and 3) of underground work at Finsch used open stope mining methods, also using the latest in technology. The mine began developing Block 4 in 2004. How-ever, studies on this level showed that block caving was a more efficient mining method than open stoping. It was during those studies that De Beers determined that Block 4 would be a good candidate for testing Sandvik?s automated truck haulage technology.

The Barrick Zaldivar mine is an openpit, heap-leach copper mine in Region II of northern Chile at an elevation of 3,300 m (10,826 ft), approximately 1,400 km (870 miles) north of Santiago and 175 km (109 miles) southeast of the port city of Antofagasta. In 2006, Zaldívar produced 307 million lbs of copper, with reserves estimated at 5.7 billion lbs. The mine uses conventional methods of openpit mining: Pure cathode copper is produced by three stages of crushing and stacking the ore, followed by heap leaching and bacterial activity to extract copper from the ore into solution. A solvent extraction and electrowinning process then removes the copper from solution and produces the cathode copper. A flotation plant also recovers copper contained in the fine fraction of the crushed ore. In 2006, an existing A-frame structure that covered copper ore from the mine?s secondary crushing operation was damaged beyond repair. The material delivery configuration of this original structure had the conveyor carrying incoming ore directly over the low roof to drop ore into the building at its peak, and ore trickling from the sides of the conveyor had accumulated on the roof, overloading it. A better solution had to be found, and fast: First, the Chilean Commission does not permit uncovered piles of this type since the extremely fine material leads to serious pollution problems. Second, Barrick Zaldivar is very concerned about worker safety, and the amount of dust created by the uncovered pile was not acceptable. The project is located in the northern region of the People’s Republic of China and was awarded to Impregilo, as sponsor of the Wan Long Joint Venture, in September1997. The project consists of four tunnels for a total length of 88,700 m, with an excavation diameter of about 4.9 m. The lining is made of honeycomb pre-cast segments, connected by PVC dowels and the joints are sealed with elastomeric gaskets. The geology is mainly Limestone, Dolomite and Sandstone. Karst cavities are abundant and are often in-filled with plastic red clay. This has adversely affected the TBM’s progress. Four double shield telescopic TBMs were mobilized to cope with the very tight construction schedule and, at the end of November 2000, more than 80% of the tunnel has been bored. The article analyses the TBMs’ productions in the various geological conditions and the results of different technical solutions adopted at the project.

Crushing and grinding account for the major portion (60 to 80 percent) of the overall expenses for ore processing. Autogenous (AG) and semiautogenous grinding (SAG) have been considered a step forward in comparison to conventional grinding circuits with several stages of crushing and using ball (and/or rod) grinding mills (Bassarear, 1982, MacPherson, 1989, Pithois, Casalis, 1983, Maripuu et al., 1983). However, there remains room for improvement to existing AG and SAG technologies and both technologies have immense economic benefit potential. Experience gained by the Technics & Technologies of Disintegration Ltd. (TTD) in the research of grinding processes shows that grinding in AG and SAG mills can be performed in a more effective way. The company's approach comprises the following elements: ? Novel mill design. ? New liners and lifters. ? Novel discharge grid design. ? Technique of treating material of critical particle size. Comparative tests that demonstrated the usefulness of these innovations are described in this article. Currently, there are hundreds of AG and SAG mills in operation throughout the world. Application of new internal elements of the mills and reconsideration of the circuit design of the existing grinding equipment using present technological solutions would significantly increase the throughput rate and diminish power requirement.

Because of its small interburden thickness, concentrated stress distributions, high coal seam metamorphism, and complex geological conditions, mining the five coal seams (Nos. 5, 7, 8, 9 and 12) of Kaiping coalfield is difficult. Kaiping coalfield is located within 80 m in the Kailuan Group. The overburden caving caused by mining the five coals seams was measured using ZTR12 geological penetration radar (GPR) survey combined with borehole observations. The development characteristics of full-cover rock fractures after mining were obtained from the GPR scan, which provides a measurement basis for the control of rock strata in close multiple-seam coal mining. For the first time, it was found that the overburden caving pattern shows a periodic triangular caved characteristic. Furthermore, it is proposed that an upright triangular collapsed rock pile and an inverted triangular area with larger fragments piled up alternately appear in the lower gob. The research results show that the roof structure formed in the gob area can support the key overlying strata, which is beneficial to ensure the integrity and stability of the upper coal seams in multiple-seam mining of close-coal seams.

This paper presents various design and construction considerations involved in developing an underwater installation of lined, large diameter shafts not known to have been previously accomplished for the diameter size, depth or ground conditions identified with the Seabrook Power Station. Outlined approach provides for driving tunnels independent of shaft sinking operation, permits the use of prefabricated shaft lining and incorporates a safe dry tap method for connecting the shafts to the tunnels. INTRODUCTION The Seabrook Power Station, located two miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean, at Seabrook, New Hampshire, is a two unit, nuclear powered, electric generating plant, each unit having a capacity of 1150 megawatts (electric). Typical to all steam driven generators is the requirement for large quantities of water. Requirements for the Seabrook Plant will be met by intaking and discharging approximately 850,000 gpm of ocean water at a considerable distance from the shore line in water depths that render the environmental impact inconsequential. Obtaining, conveying and discharging such large quantities of water represents a major undertaking, particularly under today's environmental controls. Tunnels are well suited to reducing the environmental impact at the Seabrook site by conveying the water about 250 feet deep under the salt marsh (a valuable ecological feature) and under the beach well out into the ocean without any noticeable ground surface disturbance. Lineament analysis, a remote sensing application for geological structures, has been criticized for reliance on subjective interpretations. The Mine Safety & Health Administration’s Roof Control Division performs lineament analyses with a technique that removes much subjectivity. Study areas are viewed on satellite images with software that allows examination under artificial sun azimuths and elevations. Extraneous lineaments are removed through successive steps of superposition, resulting in selection of the most robust linear features. Field investigations revealed a strong coincidence of joint and fault zones that were parallel with projected lineaments. The Roof Control Division’s successful identification of lineaments associated with roof falls and highwall failures has prompted some mine managers to incorporate lineament analysis as a mine-planning tool. The identification of potentially hazardous ground conditions will allow mine operators to obviate safety concerns that might otherwise adversely affect miner health and safety.

Open-type, or main beam, tunnel boring machines (TBMs) can achieve impressive rates of production. This type of TBM typically outperforms other types of TBMs currently in use around the world. In good ground conditions, main beam machines have achieved production rates of more than 1 km/month (0.6 miles/month). However, installing effective ground support in poorer rock conditions on main beam machines can be a major cause of concern. The design of main beam machines is such that installation of ground support equipment, particularly at the front of the machine in what is commonly known as the L1 support zone, has traditionally been limited to rock drills and basic working platforms. Personnel working in the L1 zone have, until recently, been protected by roof supports and extended fingers, often with restricted access to working areas.

The trend for using larger equipment in open pit mining to achieve cost effectiveness raises the question about the optimum economic point of scale in the current world of globalization. The present paper treats this question through the prism of a new methodology of assessing the impact of the size of production equipment on the economic outcomes of coal mining ventures. The methodology incorporates a production scheduling optimization model that implements both principles of mine planning, coal quality optimization and waste deferment. The implementation of the waste deferment principle dealing with the spatial and time aspects of the mine sequence arrangement allows the adequate modeling of the optimality of production equipment scale through the use of mine investment parameters, such as, purchase and ownership costs and discounted cash flows analysis. A case study is provided to illustrate the applicability of the new methodology.

Construction of Ontario Power Generation?s 12.8-m diameter, 10.4-km long water diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, is underway. The tunnel is being excavated by means of a 14.44-m diameter open gripper Tunnel Boring Machine. The tunnel lining is constructed as a two-pass system with the initial lining consisting of rock bolts, mesh, steel channels or ribs, and shotcrete, and the final lining consisting of pre-stressed cast-in-place concrete with a waterproof membrane. This paper defines the elements of a basic economic model for decision-making when considering a methane drainage system for an underground coal mine. A drainage system will require significant capital and operating expenses; hence the decision to utilize drainage must be made carefully. The model outlines the basic structure of decision-making and considers the costs and benefits when the methane is marketed and when the methane is vented to the atmosphere. The effects on mine safety and the dust levels in the mine are also considered, both in a general format and as economic variables. Sources of information for executing this decision-making are provided for an actual mine decision.

The softwall mining system is a novel, new method of mining mineral deposits in soft, shallow, nonrock ground conditions. This method can mine the ore layer without substantially disturbing the existing overburden. The softwall mining system consists of machinery that is hydraulically controlled and powered, that can be buried (or used on the surface) to extract the ore or mineral from a layered deposit. The method is essentially an application of the longwall mining concept, modified for loose overburden and ore conditions, combined with hydraulic mining.

The East Side Access (ESA) project is the largest underground rail infrastructure project under construction in New York City, USA. The Manhattan segment of the project is to be mined through rock and consists of 4.1 miles of Tunnel Boring Machine tunnels for track work and mined excavations to house rail switches, air plenums, and other rail facilities. This paper considers different methods for concrete lining, such as the use of fixed forms, adjustable forms, and pneumatically applied shotcrete. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed and the basis for considering one over the other are illustrated. Further discussions on design development and preparation of documents to facilitate quality and constructability in the field are presented.

The recovery of copper and cobalt from ancient copper slags from the Küre region of Turkey was investigated. A fayalitic-type of ancient copper slag containing 1.24% Cu, 0.53% Co and 53.16% Fe were subjected to an experimental study. Two different routes were followed to recover the metal values. The first route was roasting the slag with pyrite followed by leaching. The second route was flotation of the slags, roasting of the flotation tailings with pyrite and leaching. The second route was found to be suitable for the treatment of the copper slag studied. In the flotation step, a copper concentrate containing approximately 11% Cu was produced with a 77% recovery while 93% of the cobalt stayed in the tailings. In the roasting experiments, the effects of roasting time, pyrite: slag ratio and roasting temperature on the dissolution efficiencies of Cu and Co were investigated, and the optimum conditions were determined. In the tests, 87% of the cobalt dissolution was observed after one hour of roasting at 500°C with a pyrite: slag ratio of 3:1. The copper dissolution in the tests was 31%. Based on the results of this study, a process flowsheet is proposed for the evaluation of these slags.
