Almost all the ore deposits of ferrous, non-ferrous and rare metals of Kazakstan, are exploiting by the open-cast method, are the complex-structural, multi-component ones. Their rational working requires precise organization of extracting works. In this connection it is necessary to set up the best intercommunications between drilling-blasting, excavating-loading and transport works. This requires the stable functioning of the quarry for dispatch of ore raw material of required quality with minimum of corresponding expenses. For this purpose, proceeding from the quarry’s ore output and the assumed parameters of the exploitation system, the first problem about rational arrangement of excavating-loading equipment in extracting faces is solved. By solving the problem the model with dynamic, adapting properties had been used. It was solved numerically by the method of statistical tests. By setting up the necessary link between type-sizes of excavating-loading and transport equipment, the minimum prime cost of loading and transportation of 1 ton of mining mass from the face to the receiving station was adopted as the criterion of optimality. Depending on the type of excavating-loading equipment, the efficiency function may be different. By using wheel loaders, their displacement between the faces is possible, therefore, the efficiency function of the problem may include expenses for their displacement. By using excavators like power shovel, the problem’s restrictions must exclude its displacement between the faces. The efficiency function consists of minimum expenses for loading, proceeding from set of volumes of extraction from the faces, satisfying required quality. The volumes of extraction from the faces, satisfying required quality of ore in output stream, are determined by the method of statistical tests. Sample range is given, proceeding from the restrictions for maximum productivity of the excavating-loading equipment. Volumes of extraction, not satisfying required quality, are cut off. The efficiency function meaning is then determined and minimized. What is not measured cannot be managed. This is true of most things, including a furnace lining. This paper describes a Lining Management System used for this purpose. It provides the operations staff with a management tool to predict long term lining life and acts as a process optimisation tool. It alarms and records upset furnace conditions. Outputs from the system are described as presented through a specially developed software package and interface. It includes vertical and horizontal furnace sections showing estimated isotherms through the lining as well as the furnace bath. It also shows calculated heat flux values, estimated lining wear and the freeze layer profile. A novel three-dimensional display is described which provides the operator with a big picture view of the furnace crucible profile under real time operating conditions. The powerful trending facility for analysing both measured and calculated values is discussed. The required instrumentation hardware as well as the installation thereof is described, with special reference to an electrically insulating thermocouple socket design. Finally feedback is provided on the first year?s performance of the system installed on an open ferrochrome furnace at Assmang Chrome, Machadodorp, South Africa.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The Union Section of Anglo Platinum is situated ±18 km west of the town of Northam on the north-western rim of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. Both the Merensky and UG2 reefs are mined. Support of the Merensky stoping areas with rock bolts is specifically problematic due to the stoping width restrictions varying around 90 cm. The installation equipment of in-stope rock bolts and the effectiveness thereof in the Merensky stoping areas was critically evaluated. In order to do this a background research on the need for better on-the-face support had to be conducted. The need for improving the rock bolt drilling and the equipment had to be investigated and the financial implications and justifications for the improved equipment examined. To conduct the search an overall study was done on the rockfalls and safety aspects throughout the platinum industry in South Africa and specifically Union Section. It was found that most of the rock falls in the Merensky stoping areas of which ± 70% are less than 1.2 m in thickness generally occurs within 4 m from the face and causes ± 60% of the in-stope injuries. Serious shortcomings had been identified with respect to the airleg, rock drill machine and the drill steels used in the drilling of the rock bolt holes. Through experimentation, using a testing frame built for this purpose on surface and with the co-operation of mine staff and suppliers, a number of possible modifications were identified and tested. This resulted in the final product with which it was possible to drill a 1.2 m hole in the hangingwall of the stopes ranging with an angle to the hanging from 90° for a 90 cm stoping width and 67° for a 80 cm stoping width. It is confidently concluded that this system will effectively improve the total face support and result in a substantial reduction of rock falls and consequently the occurrence of injuries and fatalities in the Merensky stoping areas. The installation of rock bolts on the face with the modified drilling equipment will increase the direct support, but the system has a potential of a substantial reduction in the profile stick support density and an increase in productivity in the stoping areas due to fewer occurrences of rock falls. It was finally concluded that effective modifications to the drilling equipment for rock bolt in-hole drilling could be made and the installation thereof in the stope face is adequately justified.

The occurrence of heavy minerals in the oil sands of Alberta has long been known and has been well documented in the literature. Unfortunately most of the researchers working on this resource have been unable to produce products that meet acceptable market specifications. This has resulted in many misconceptions about this resource. Recent efforts have shown that with some innovative approaches, marketable material can be produced and as a result it might finally be possible to realize the potential of this immense resource that, some have estimated, could contain in excess of 20% of the world demand by 2010. This paper highlights the uniqueness of this mineral assemblage and the mineral processing challenges it presents. It shows the most recent work that has resulted in the production of marketable titanium and zircon products. This paper also focuses on some of the special problems resulting from the variability in the heavy mineral suite. Of special interest is the occurrence and removal of bitumen and pyrite without adding to the sulphur dioxide loading in the regional airshed. The trend by the mining industry to develop various positions on ‘sustainable mining’ has some significance for the heavy mineral industry. Although the industry generally has an excellent track record of eventually rehabilitating disturbed ground in an acceptable manner, heavy mineral mining operations tend to have a relatively large footprint of disturbance and the industry is under considerable pressure to develop options that are more environmentally acceptable. In addition, as operators move to exploit deposits that are lower grade and/or are further from a port site, the emissions per unit of sold product will also rise and the industry will be under pressure to address this issue as well. Because heavy minerals from oil sands are by-products of existing operations, there are virtually no incremental disturbances or emissions that would be associated with heavy mineral production. All mining and tailings remediation issues are accounted for by the oil sand operation. The only incremental emissions would be those associated with the mineral processing operations and transport of finished products to a port site. This paper discusses the environmental and cost implications of this situation.

In 2002 a coal dust explosions occurred in the Polish collieries “Jas-Mos” and “Rydultowy” in the Upper Silesia coal basin. In the “Jas-Mos” colliery the coal dust explosion was initiated in the face of gallery by explosives and causing ten death. The stone dust barrier extinguished the flame, stopped the explosion development and saved forty nine miners working in that area. In the “Rydultowy” colliery methane inflammation caused three deaths and seven serious burns and ignited the coal dust explosion. The coal dust explosion was stopped by stone dust barrier and did not cause any victims itself. This paper presents the investigation carried out by the Central Mining Institute Experimental Mine “Barbara” and shows that the stone dust barriers remain still a basic mean for suppression of coal dust explosion in mines. The investigation were aimed at determining the cause of explosion and circumstances that led to their propagation. The evaluation of the state of dust explosion hazard in the areas of accidents have been performed, and the range of flame estimated.

"Since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in mid-2008, capital has been more difficult to access. Mining projects must contend with projects from other industries for scarce capital. A decision to invest available capital in mineral projects requires that valuation be conducted to assess the expected return on the projects. The discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis is generally applied for the valuation of mining projects, whereby future cash flows are discounted to present value using an appropriate discount rate. The discount rate significantly affects the outcome of a valuation. Economic and finance theory provides tools to calculate discount rates. The discount rate must account for factors such as the risk and stage of development of the mineral project; hence the appropriate discount rate to utilize in a project is often a subject of debate.The discount rate is the weighted sum of the cost of debt and equity. There are several methods for determining the cost of equity. This study considers the commonly applied Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model because of their simplicity and availability of parameters required to estimate the cost of equity. This study explores how differences in the cost of equity obtained by these two methods can be explained for a mining environment. Data for empirical analysis were collected from the I-Net Bridge, McGregor BFA, and Bloomberg databases. It was found that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model provides better estimates of the cost of equity compared to the CAPM under depressed market conditions. Therefore, this research recommends that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model be used to estimate the discount rates for mining projects during periods of depressed market conditions."

For the purpose of determining confidence limits for ore grade estimates, an extensive simulated data base was used, which included 1728 ore blocks with ‘actual’ grades and the corresponding estimates based on ordinary and simple kriging. The practical results show that conditional unbiasedness is essential and that acceptable confidence limits can then be set using Normal theory for the simulated error distribution based on the logarithms of the ratios of ‘actuals’/estimates with a variance related to the kriging variance. The mean of the data used to prepare the variogram and the estimated block grade are to be used properly in this approach. A practical analysis was also done of the actual point and block data from a very large mined out Carbon Leader area. The distributions of the actual grades for two levels of block sizes with different levels of variability were fitted using three models, ie. 2-. 3- and compound-lognormal. The trends of tonnages, grades and relative profits for a range of pay limits, as well as the usual tonnage-grade curves, show a practical insensitivity for the choice between the three lognormal models considered.

At Tokushima Plant of Nippon Denko Co., Ltd. high-carbon ferromanganese is produced by the electric furnace method using lump manganese ores and sintered manganese ores manufactured from fine manganese ores. However, the distribution of manganese ores is significantly uneven on earth, and their characteristics considerably vary by ore type. It is known from experience that the production of high-carbon ferromanganese by the electric furnace method depends greatly on material ores. Therefore, to maintain stable operation in the electric furnace-smelting field, it is important to identify the characteristics of each type of material ores in advance. Thus, we evaluated the high-temperature electric characteristics of manganese ores using the electrical conductivity measuring system developed by ourselves and provided the standards for determining ores and blending ratio necessary for stable operation of the electric furnace based on the evaluation results. This time we worked for optimisation of the high-temperature electric characteristics of sintered manganese ores through modification of the characteristics because the blending ratio of sintered manganese ores in the electric furnace is high. The electrical conductivity of sintered ores having various chemical components in a high-temperature region (up to 1 550°C) was measured using our electrical conductivity measuring system and high-temperature electric characteristics evaluating method reported at INFACON 9. As the result of the measurement, we revealed that the high-temperature electric characteristics of the sintered ores depend on their chemical contents and the sintered ores can be modified to those having excellent high-temperature electric characteristics by controlling their chemical contents, so that the resources can be effectively used.

The use of drilling rigs to increasingly mechanize stope drilling has been acknowledged as important for the S.A. mining industry in it ís efforts to tackle the challenges of low productivity, AIDS and an ageing driller workforce. The spin-offs of increased safety, cost-effectiveness and better mining performance provide advantages to all?from the driller to the shareholder. However, implementation or product rollout has varied from outright success to dismal failure. A study of various cases by Novatek and Anglogold TDS showed clear reasons for these differences. Whereas the successes were characterized by clear objectives, accountability, user buy-in, a commitment to make the technology work and no-nonsense reporting, these were typically absent in failed implementations. The attitude at unsuccessful mines was to ?trial? the equipment?even subconsciously, a ?trial? is a test where failure becomes an acceptable outcome. During the study it became clear that mining management are not adequately trained to manage the often-tricky rollout process. They are often also not empowered or clearly mandated to deal with the organizational, human and technical issues that must dovetail to create a success. The output of the study was to develop a basic rollout process that could be used to formally manage the implementation of new drilling technology. Creating an alignment between the mine, workforce and supplier promotes a win-win situation that will not otherwise spontaneously arise.

This paper describes preliminary research on the application of Markov Decision Processes (MDP) to Real Option Valuation (ROV) and the optimisation of mine scheduling. The MDP framework is a novel approach to option valuation and scheduling in mining operations. A learning agent is introduced into the valuation process of an open pit, where prices and block ore grades have probabilistic values. The prices are modelled using a mean reverting diffusion process and the block grades using sequential Gaussian simulation. The agent is asked to learn which production parameters should be used in order to maximise the overall value of the project. The introduction of the agent permits a real option approach to mine valuation, such that the value associated with the robustness of a design to uncertainty can be measured. A simulated example is used in which there are ten blocks to be extracted under conditions of grade and price uncertainty. Using policy iteration, an optimal policy is generated and the value of production options is found. The potential financial gains from applying MDPs to mine valuation and optimisation are substantial and warrant further investigation.

The simple act of taking a sample implies that someone will use the information contained in the analytical result to make a decision about a course of action. In the mining industry, the decisions may involve huge capital commitments for opening or closing a mine, or marginal tactical costs that involve deciding if a truckload of mineralized rock should be sent to the mill for processing, or the waste dump. Sampling is among the most fundamental activities in a mining operation, and this paper aims to examine some of the technical issues that can assist in ensuring that samples are representative and correct. Insights into the scale of variability require that we disaggregate sampling variance into its component parts and evaluate each one individually. The work of Pierre Gy in understanding the different sampling errors is the first step in establishing an optimal protocol. This must be followed by the appropriate measures to ensure the protocol is implemented such that minimal bias is introduced in the sampling process. Even with these insights the possibility exists for large unseen and hidden costs can accumulate in a mineral development because of sampling errors. These hidden costs arise due to misunderstanding of the principle factors that affect the size of sampling errors, such as the mass of the sample, the effects of splitting a sample to reduce the mass, and the influence of the nominal particle size. The handling of sample material without due regard to the sampling characteristics of the material being sampled is also a major source of sampling errors. The most significant problem is due to the influence of the so-called volume-variance effect. This effect is a consequence of the support effect and the information effect both of which relate to the difference in size at which samples are collected and mining blocks are extracted. The information effect is a function of the availability of data at the time that decisions are made about the destinations of mineralized rock, namely the mill or the waste dump. Implementation of appropriate sampling protocols in the mineral value chain remains a challenge throughout the industry. The growing understanding and deepening appreciation of sampling theory and methods means we stand on the threshold of a new era for implementing and understanding appropriate sampling procedures and protocols. In the interests of optimal development of the national patrimony it is suggested that standardization through the identification of structural problems and continuous improvement of mining processes be instituted at a national level.

A new method, the gliding cylinder method, was proposed as a wide range viscometer for the measurements of molten salts, slags, and glasses. The method consists of two coaxial cylinders, cylindrical bob and a vessel containing a liquid sample. There is a narrow gap between bob and vessel. When the vessel moves against the bob, the generated force on the bob consists of three types of resistance: (1) Stokes’s resistance on the bob, (2) a capillary flow resistance though an annular gap between vessel and bob, and (3) lubricating resistance in a gap. The last two can be calculated on a theoretical basis but the first cannot be estimated by a simple calculation since a wall effect did not calculate easily. However, it can be assumed that the generated force depends on both the viscosity of a liquid and velocity of the vessel. Thus, the relation between viscosity and a force at desired velocity of the vessel was measured using several standard reference materials including glycerol aqueous solutions and standard reference oils. The results depended on the magnitude of the gap between the bob and the vessel. For the wider gap, it was shown that the viscosity is a linear function of a gradient of force with respect to a vessel velocity. In contrast, if the gap is small, the viscosity depends on the gradient (of force with respect to velocity). This implies that the non-linear phenomena would occur in Stokes resistance. Though detailed analysis is in a further investigation, a calibration method can be applied to determine the viscosity by this method, because good correlation was obtained among these quantities. Viscosity of molten salts, such as NaNO3and ZnCl2was measured by this method as high temperature demonstration. Historically bauxite-based refractories have been used in applications where andalusite-based refractories could work. Bauxite-based refractories were chosen over andalusite-based refractories mainly because of the availability of low-cost Chinese bauxite and also because many furnaces were designed by international companies that cannot easily access high-quality products. Currently, the availability of low-cost bauxite is under threat as a result of high export duties and tariffs as well as restrictions on the amount of material that China allows to be exported. South Africa is a major producer of andalusite, and this guarantees stability with respect to both availability and price. Refractories based on andalusite have an added economic advantage over bauxite-based refractories in that unlike bauxite, which requires high-temperature calcination before use, andalusite is used in its raw state. This paper constitutes a literature study of the merits, both technical and economic, of using refractories based on andalusite compared to bauxite-based refractories. Mining companies are increasingly looking to the developing world for the next generation of mining projects, often in countries that have little or no previous history of large-scale mining. One of the major challenges for such projects is hiring?and retaining?personnel that have technical skills and experience in mining-related disciplines. Staffing a mine with an expatriate workforce is neither cost-effective nor sustainable, and many countries now insist that mining companies ?transform? the profile of their workforce to more closely mirror the demographic profile of the host population. The need to nurture mining-related skills in emerging mining nations is not solely limited to the workforce: there are also pressing economic and sustainability imperatives to develop capacity within local service providers such as consultants and contractors, as well as to facilitate informed engagement between mining companies, government and civil society. However, few educational institutions in emerging mining nations currently have the ability to offer practical training in mining-related disciplines. Local employees who are sponsored by companies to develop their skills through international study maybe impeded by language and cultural barriers, and may also be taught using course content that is of limited relevance to the specific challenges of their future working environment. This paper addresses the challenge of skills development and retention in emerging mining nations and uses examples from sub-Saharan Africa and the Asia Pacific region to explore practical means of developing capacity in mining-related disciplines. It examines the need for companies to implement strategies to develop local technical capacity in countries where they envisage a long-term operational future and also highlights the need to foster partnerships between academia, developmental institutions, mining companies, governments and civil society to establish the critical mass of mining-related skills required to nurture the development of a sustainable mining industry.

When stress wave propagates through fractured rock masses, the wave will be slowed and attenuated due to the presence of these fractures. If the amplitude of stress wave is large enough to mobilize nonlinear deformation of these fractures, they will present different effects on one-dimensional P-wave propagation compared with those of linear deformational fractures. The static BB model is adopted to describe the nonlinear deformational behavior. Method of characteristics combined with displacement discontinuity theory is used to build analytical solutions of wave particle velocities and wave stresses. These equations are numerically solved with sufficient accuracy.

In this paper results from industrial trials of CaC2 injection during stainless steel production in an electric arc furnace at Sandvik Steel is presented. The main purpose of the investigation was to analyse the effect of the injection on slag foaming and final chromium oxide concentration in slag. The results show that both an increase in slag foaming and a decrease of the final chromium oxide could be obtained during the charges with CaC2injection. On the basis of the results, the economical requirements are also discussed. Both the technical and economical requirements could be achieved for steels alloyed with Mo. In order to secure the economical requirements for all steel grades of interest, the injection technology must be further developed. It would also be important to utilize the positive effect of the slag foaming on the electric energy consumption. The work has been performed as a part of MEFOS frame research programme with participants from Sandvik Steel, AKZO Nobel and Avesta Polarit. On the basis of in situ study of pillar loading at different sites, an attempt is made in this paper to visualize the development of mining induced stress under varying geo-mining conditions. Field study demonstrated interesting interaction between size of pillar and nature of roof rock mass under the influence of increasing dimension of the excavation. Stiffness of pillars/overburden, extraction ratio and depth cover are observed to be the important parameters for the estimation of mining induced stress over the pillar. These parameters influence, both, the value of ultimate induced stress (vertical) and its range of influence ahead of the face line. Further, it is observed that the change in width/height (w/h) ratio of a pillar has got considerable influence over the nature of mining induced stress over it. Impact of highly dynamic nature of mining induced stress over the natural supports is observed to be the most serious factor for the safety of working under a hard and massive roof rock mass. On the basis of these observations, a conceptual model of interaction between the natural support and overlying strata is discussed in the paper. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Aufgrund ist in situ Studium von Säule Beladung an verschiedenen Stellen, ein Versuch in diesem Papier gemacht, die Entwicklung des Bergbaus vostellen sich, Spannung unter Änderung von Geo Bergbau von Bedingungen hat veranlaßt. Feld Studium hat interessante Wechselwirkung zwischen Größe von Säule und Natur von Dach Felsen Masse unter dem Einfluß von Vermehrung Dimension des excavation vorgeführt. Steifheit des Säulen Overburden, Herausziehung Verhältnisses und Tiefe sind beobachtet bedeckt, die wichtigen Parameter für die Schätzung des Bergbaus zu sein, Spannung über der Säule hat veranlaßt. Diese Parameter beeinflussen, beide, der Wert allerletzter veranlaßter Spannung (senkrecht) und sein Bereich des Einflusses voraus von der Gesicht Linie. Weiter ist, es beobachtet, daß die Änderung in Breite Höhe (W H) Verhältnis einer Säule beträchtlichen Einfluß über der Natur des Bergbaus erhalten hat, Spannung hat darüber veranlaßt. Schlag sehr dynamischer Natur des Bergbaus ist Spannung über den natürlichen Stützen beobachtet hat veranlaßt, der ernsteste Faktor für die Sicherheit des Arbeitens unter einer harten und massiven Dach Felsen Masse zu sein. Aufgrund dieser Beobachtungen, ein begriffliches Modell der Wechselwirkung zwischen der natürlichen Stütze und der überlagernde strata ist im Papier diskutiert. RESUME: En se basant sur dans l'étude de situ de chargement de pilier aux sites différents, une tentative est faite dans ce papier pour envisager le développement de creuse la tension persuadée sous varier de conditions de geo creuse. L'étude de champs a démontré l'interaction intéressante entre la taille de pilier et la nature de masse de rocher de toit sous l'influence d'augmenter de dimension de l'excavation. La raideur de piliers overburden, la proportion d'extraction et la couverture de profondeur est observée pour être les paramètres importants pour le jugement de creuse la tension persuadée par-dessus le pilier. Ces paramètres influencent, les deux, la valeur de tension persuadée ultime (vertical) et sa gamme d'influence en avant de la ligne de face. Plus, il est observé que le changement dans la largeur hauteur (le w h) la proportion d'un pilier a reçu l'influence considérable par-dessus la nature de creuse la tension persuadée par-dessus il. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Technikon Practical Training Frank shaft is mining both Merensky reef and UG2 reef. The Merensky orebody is almost depleted and this was the reason for starting to mine the UG2 ore reserves. It was decided to mine the UG2 orebody with trackless equipment using a bord and pillar mining method. Frank shaft has been mining the UG2 orebody for nearly 5 years. The T-cut mining method was introduced to see if it could improve the grade of the run of mine (ROM) as well the extraction percentage.

The paper describes the components of an Integrated Furnace Control system for covered-arc (shielded arc) smelting with results from the recently started 75 MW Cerro Matoso Line 2 Furnace. The paper starts with a review of the mechanisms of power and feed input and heat losses in the shielded-arc smelting process, and describes how the details of the control system are tailored to the process. The control modules of a covered-arc smelting furnace are described including measured results and screen captures.
