"A novel technology was developed to study the process of recycling copper from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs), which are the main source of metal production in the next decades. The chemical compositions of the WPCBs were investigated. The results indicated that the PCB powder was mainly composed of copper (38.5 wt.%), iron, aluminum, and non-metallic materials. Copper is mainly in the form of Cu and is the most valuable metal for the recycle of WPCBs. The concentrated WPCBs powder, obtained by the mechanical process, were pressed as the anode, which was directly electrolyzed to produce copper. The effects of H2SO4 concentration, Cu2+ concentration, current density, pole pitch, and liquid-to-solid ratio on the voltage, current efficiency, and copper extraction were investigated. The results indicated that the optimum conditions were liquid-to-solid ratio of 30 mL/g, current density of 571 A/m2, sulfuric acid concentration of 180 g/L, 50 g/L of copper ion, polar distance of 3 cm. Under the conditions, a desired current efficiency could be achieved. Meanwhile, about 95.62% Cu was recovered from the WPCBs. The experimental studies also revealed that the purity of copper obtained at the highest current efficiency was higher to 99.98%. Produced copper sheet were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD analysis indicated that the copper was the main phase. INTRODUCTION With the rapid development of electronic industry, more and more waste electronic and electrical equipments (WEEE) are generated every year (Fogarasi et al., 2012; Liang et al., 2013). The production of printed circuit boards (PCBs) is the base of electronic industry, because it is the essential part of all electrical and electronic equipments (Schlummer et al., 2007). As a result, a considerable amount of waste PCBs containing plenty of heavy metals have to be treated. In general, PCBs contain about 28% metals that are abundant non-ferrous metals such as Cu, Pb, and Sn. Printed circuit boards can be considered as a secondary resource for recycling rather than wasting. The contents of gold and silver respectively reach 80 g/t and 3300 g/t, which are much higher than that of primary ores. Copper is the main metal of PCB and its content is as high as 26.8% ( Zhang et al., 2009)."

Domestic production of pyrite cinder reached 15.95 million tons in 2006. The pyrite cinder used in cement industry accounts for about 30% production. The remaining 70%, 11.17 million tons, was thrown away as waste, which brought serious environmental and resource problems. A new technology of composite pellet reduction-roasting and magnetic-separation (CPRM) has been developed to utilize pyrite cinder. Pyrite cinder sample, containing 45.56% Fe, 0.19% Cu and 1.45% S, was pelletized with addition of 5% composite agent in balling disc. Green balls after drying were reduced at 700~800 ? for 20min with 300kg/t pulverized coal injection in rotary kiln. After two stages of ball-grinding and four stages of magnetic separation, high grade magnetite concentrate with 66.23% Fe was produced, meanwhile impurities Cu and S was decreased to 0.048% and 0.053%, respectively. And iron recovery of 73.32%, desulphurization of 96.34% and decoppering degree of 74.73% were achieved. Key technique is that composite agent can accelerate reduction of Fe2O3 and transfer copper and sulphur into water-soluble inorganic salts, which can be removed during wet magnetic concentration. This new technology can be used to fully utilize pyrite cinder and produce high quality magnetite concentrates as feed for steel industry, which will help tackle the pollution problem of pyrite cinder and extend iron-bearing raw material sourcing for Chinese steel industry.

Experiment results and operation practice on reutilizing old tailings dumped at SCIM (Shang-chang Iron Mine) of KISCO (Kunming Iron and Steel Corp.) are presented. In a production period over 30 years SCIM dumped about 8 million tons of iron ore tailings. For improving resources utilization instead of wasting, experiments on processing for reutilization of the old tailings are con-ducted. These tailings are fine size fractions of weathered iluvial ores rejected out by classification- des-liming in ore washing and dressing processes, containing TFe 21%~22% in hematite mainly and limonite occasionally. Their particle size distribution, in average, is of 72.26% minus 0.037mm and 30.88% minus 0.005mm. Existence of plenty of micro-fine particles makes the tailings refractory to process, resulting in poor metallurgy. The whole sample of the old tailings without size-classification is fed into experimental process. Slon-100 type high grads WHIMS (wet high intensity magnetic separator) with cyc-pulsing is adopted, which magnetism-focusing rod?s diameter is changed from 3mm into 2mm. Operational conditions of optimizing rougher separation tests are strengthened. An iron concentrate assaying 52.21% Fe at quantity rate of 18.39% and iron recovery of 44.40% is obtained. Operational practice shows that metallurgy and economy of the old tailings treatment are close to what achieved at experiments. It is estimated, therefore, that some 1.4 million tons of this iron concentrate may be recovered from the old tailings. This means that KISCO has moved its key one-step in re-mining and reutilizing the secondary resources, which would be a good demonstration in this industry. This is also of social and economic significance in response to China government?s request on reducing consumption of resources and establishing society with economy for achieving sustainable development.

Reverse flotation process tests were conducted for marine sedimentary silicon-calcium phosphate ore in this research. The research findings showed that by adding antifoamer, a concentrate with P2O5 32.36%, SiO2 10.69%, MgO 0.67% was obtained, with recovery of P2O5 being 88.12%. Such is a satisfying result, when compared with the original mineralogical component of P2O5 26.64%, SiO2 11.51% and MgO 3.36%. When using antifoamer, the SiO2 grade of the concentrate increased 0.55%, the MgO grade decreased 0.64%, while P2O5 recovery increased 2.69% compared by adding no antifoamer. Adding antifoamer is favorable to increase the grade and recovery of P2O5. Therefore, antifoamer is necessary. Tests of synergistic reaction of antifomer indicate that the appropriate consumption of the antifoamer is 275g/t CY and 1Kg/t TWF. As is known, the oxidized antimony and antimonate are hard to treat. A new combined mineral processing flowsheet which is controlled in grinding and classification ?bulk floatation?gravity separation is adopted to dispose of gravity-separated tailings (antimony content: 1.48%; oxidization rate: 68.92%) in Muli Antimony Mine, the grade of floatation antimony concentrates is 32.64%; the grade of gravity-separated antimony concentrates is 26.99%; the combined grade of floatation and gravity-separated antimony concentrates is 30.85%, and the total recovery of antimony is 70.64%. Adopting the new mineral processing technique have solved the problem of over grinding of antimony ore by controlling grinding and classification, recovering effectively the sulfide antimony and the easy floatable oxidized antimony of fine size by bulk floatation, recovering effectively the oxidized antimony which is hard to float by classified gravity separation. This is a great breakthrough in the mineral processing technique of the recovery of the oxidized antimony. At present, favorable economic benefit has been obtained from the application of this processing technique in Muli Antimony Mine.

2-hydroxy-3-naphthoy hydroxamic acid code name F203 is a good collector of cassiterite, 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoy hydroxamic acid code name ZJ-3. F203 and ZJ-3 are similar series of isomers. They have similar naphthye, and similar series of functional OH and ?CONHOH, but the seat of OH and ?CONHOH group are different, on the F203 is 2.3; on the ZJ-3 is 1.2, ortho position too. According to Isomeric principle ZJ-3 is a good collector of cassiterite slime too. Using ZJ-3 as collector flotation -10µm occupies 90%, grade 1.16% Sn cassiterite slime of Da Chang Chehe concentration plant, pass one coursing flotation, two cleaning and one scarenging flotation, and obtains grand 18.26% Sn, recovery 92.68% cassiterite concentrate. The result proves the Isomeric principle of flotation reagents is correct again. This principle may supply to synthetize new flotation reagents reference. The feed of flotation unit in Angouran mine, as a part of Iranian Lead and Zinc National Corporation, contains about 34.26% zinc (about 12% Zn sulphide) and 10.14% lead (about 2% Pb sulphide). The grade of Pb and Zn in the final concentrate (rougher+scavenger), under optimal conditions (200 g/ton PEX, 500 g/ton zinc sulfate, 30 g/ton MIBC and pH = 7.5), was 63.18% and 13.01%, respectively, and the total Pb (sulphide-oxide) recovery was about 19% which included 95% Pb sulphide. The grade of Pb and Zn in rougher concentrate step was about 71.86% and 5.97%, respectively, when PEX (Potassium Ethyl Xanthate) was used as collector. While in the presence of PAX (Potassium Amyl Xanthate), the grade of Pb and Zn in rougher concentrate step was 66.8% and 10%, respectively. Tailing of the galena flotation (with 8.48% Pb grade and 34.92% Zn grade under the optimal conditions) was used as a feed for sphalerite and oxide section flotation.

The flotation behavior of kaolinite and diaspore using N, N-diethyl dodecyl amine (DEN12) and N, N-dimethyl dodecyl amine (DRN12) as collector have been investigated through flotation experiments. The mechanism of adsorption of two tertiary amine collectors on surface of kaolinite and diaspore were investigated by FTIR spectral, Zeta potentials measurements and calculation of molecular orbital energy. It has been found that DEN12 and DRN12 have stronger collecting power to kaolinite and weaker collecting abilityto diaspore than DDA. Kaolinite and diaspore in bauxite ores can be separated by using DEN12 and DRN12 as collectors at pulp pH below 8 and 6, respectively. The results of zeta potentials and calculation of molecular orbital energy indicated that the adsorption strength on kaolinite surface is in the order DEN12>DRN12>DDA and the adsorption strength on diaspore surface is in the order DDA>DEN12>DRN12. FTIR spectral analysis and Zeta potentials approve that the action between kaolinite and tertiary amine collector is strong electrostatic adsorption and that of diaspore is weak electrostatic adsorption in the range of pH 5~6.

In flotation, particulate materials are separated by controlling the hydrophobicity of the particles using appropriate collectors. In this regard, contact angle (?) is the most important process variable. However, the flotation models used in industry today do not include ? as a parameter. As result, flotation circuits are designed based on the first-order flotation rate constants (k) determined from laboratory experiments. A problem with this approach is that laboratory experiments usually give substantially higher k values than achievable in full-scale operations, which makes it difficult to use the model for plant design. In the present work, we have developed a model from first principles using both surface chemistry and hydrodynamic parameters, such as ?, ?-potentials, surface tension (?), particle size, energy dissipation rate, etc. The basic approach is similar to the one developed previously for bubble-particle interactions under laminar flow conditions (Yoon and Mao, J. Colloid and Interface Science, 181, 61, 1996) except that the model parameters have been modified by considering the turbulence in a flotation cell. In addition, the model describes the recovery processes in froth phase, including bubble-coarsening due to coalescence. Based on this model, we have developed a computer simulator (FlotSim) that can be used to design flotation circuits from the mineralogical (or liberation) data on the feed and the hydrodynamic characteristics of a flotation machine. Since the model is dynamic, it can also be used for process control. Further, the simulator has predictive capacity as it is based on a first-principles model. The model-based simulator has been validated in a carefully controlled bench-scale flotation experiments. The continuous digestion technological conditions of phosphate tailings with high magnesium content in sulfuric and phosphoric mixed acid is studied in this paper. The influences of excess coefficient of sulfuric acid, weight liquid to solid, reaction temperature and time on conversion of P2O5 and MgO are discussed. The influence of infiltration capacity of phosphogypsum by the concentration of liquid-phase SO3 is discussed too. Under the optimal technological conditions, the conversion of P2O5 is 95.56% and MgO 98.63%, the filtration rate of phosphogypsum increases with the increasing of liquid-phase concentration of SO3, the optimal apparent concentration of SO3 is 0.135~0.14g? mL-1 in liquid-phase. The filtration rate of phosphogypsum is 1473kg? m-2? h-1. N-P-Mg compound fertilizer was produced by adding magnesia powder and inflating ammonia in filtering medium.

Thiosulfate as an alternative lixiviant for gold has received much attention in recent years due to the growing environmental concerns over the use of cyanide. Cu(II) is used to catalyze the oxidation of gold and ammonia is to stabilize Cu(II) in alkaline solution. However, the presence of Cu(II) enhances the oxidative degradation of thiosulfate. The high consumption of reagents has made thiosulfate leaching uneconomical to date, in comparison with cyanide leaching. Therefore, further investigations are required to leaching under low reagent concentrations over extended periods where reagent consumption is low and gold leaching rate is low as well. It is thus necessary to find additives to enhance gold dissolution in the thiosulfate leaching system. Electrochemical studies using rotating gold disc showed that the oxidation of gold in ammoniacal thiosulfate solution increased significantly in the presence of a small amount of thiourea and the beneficial effect increased with an increase in the thiourea concentration up to 7.2 mM. Thiourea improved gold extraction in the thiosulfate leaching of gold from a sulfide ore under low reagent concentrations. Excessive addition of thiourea inhibited the leaching of the gold ore. The decomposition of thiosulfate was reduced with the presence of thiourea. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results indicated that thiou-rea likely decomposed to sulfide and formed gold sulfide species at the gold surface.

On installing the Metso Superior MK 54x75? primary gyratory crusher in Nkomati mine the crusher experienced severe power spikes greater than 1000kW which subsequently led to the crusher tripping under load while processing some of Nkomati?s MMZ ores. Likewise significant losses in throughput were also experienced while processing some of Nkomati?s MMZ ore types. Interestingly the crusher was capable of processing the PCMZ ores without experiencing any power spikes or losses in throughput. Investigations into the challenges faced by the crusher while processing Nkomati?s MMZ ores were conducted using the DEM model in conjunction with the fast breakage model present in Metso?s High Fidelity Simulator. The intentions of the study were to establish the most suitable operating conditions or cavity design that would potentially enhance the performance of the crusher. Likewise an understanding of the effects the feed conditions (size distribution and hardness) had on the crusher?s performance was established. Ore characterization tests were conducted on Nkomati?sPyroxenite, Diabase, Calc silicate and quartzite ores which were from Nkomati?s MMZ ore body. The ore characterization tests conducted were drop weight tests, slow compression tests and elastic modulus tests. Four simulations were conducted used the existing cavity design with various open side settings (OSS) and throws. This established the effects of changing the crusher?s operating conditions on its performance. Four additional simulations were conducted on two cavity designs with reduced volumes. This established the effects of changing the crusher?s cavity design on the crusher?s performance. Thus through the simulations a better understandings of the impact of the crusher design, operating conditions and feed conditions on the crushers performance. Furthermore an analysis of the crusher?s performance was made which was used as a basis for comparisons with the base case simulation. The recycling schemes of copper mineral to a copper raw ore produced in China is investigated in this paper, of which is aimed at copper concentrate‘s grade is over 26.00% and recovery is over 90.00%. The primary copper mineral the raw ore is chalcopyrite and the main gangue minerals are quartz, orthoclase, albite, clinochlore and phlogopite. There are four useful metal elements contained in the copper raw ore, which are Cu, Pb, Zn, Au and Ag, and the grade of each is 3.75%, 0.01%, 0.11%, 0.31 and 483.5 g/t. Two floating recycling schemes and its corresponding flotation reagent system were determined. The results show that calcium oxide, sodium carbonate and sodium sulphide were used as regulators, sodium n-butylxanthate was used as collector and terpenic oil was used as frother in two floating recycling schemes are effective. The open-circuit test’s results show that the copper mineral contained in raw ore can be effective collected, and both concentrates gotten through two schemes are up to grade.

In this paper, two types of low-grade complex zinc oxide ores (sandstone and limestone ores) from Yunnan province, China were investigated. A large number of argillaceous and alkaline gangue makes it infeasible to treat the ores with heap leaching. Although wet metallurgy can be considered, the lower efficiency of liquid-solid separation, the high cost, and low revenue limit this technology to be put into practice in large-scale. In order to solve this problem, a new technology combining mineral processing method with metallurgy technique is studied to process this refractory ore that consists of sandstone ore with 5.84 per centZn and limestone ore with 6.50 per centZn. The results of the tests showed that zinc can effectively be recovered from two types of the ores by using the new technology, and the acid consumption can be remarkably reduced. For sandstone sample, 82.96 per cent Zn was recovered by flotation and final Zn recovery by flotation+ hydro-metallurgy can be up to 78.17 per cent from the ore. In addition, for sandstone, acid consumption can be reduced from 270kg/t by direct acid, leaching to 76.92kg/t by flotation + hydrometallurgy combination. For limestone sample, 85.90 per centZn was recovered by flotation and totally 80.95 per cent Zn can be recovered by new technology which is a combination of mineral processing and metallurgy. Besides, H2SO4 consumption can be reduced from 450kg/t for sandstone originally to113.79kg/t after using new technology. One merit of this new process technology is that the zinc sulfides and oxides can be recovered without desliming in the flotation cells at the different stage and make sure the concentrate products as a good feed for hydrometallurgical technology. This study provided pretty good technical support for tapping low-grade refractory zinc oxide ores. Using pure quartz and hematite minerals, the adsorption mechanism of mixed cationic/anionic reagent schemes was investigated through Hallimond flotation studies. The flotation response of quartz and hematite independently with cationic and anionic collectors as well as with mixed cationic/anionic collector systems is assessed. The flotation response as a function of pH and collector concentration was investigated. The single mineral flotation tests in the presence of anionic collectors, quartz does not respond to flotation, but the C12 amine flotation of quartz was observed to be pH and concentration dependent. It was observed that hematite flotation recovery is maximum at acidic pH with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), neutral pH with oleate, and at basic pH about 9.5 with C12 amine. Flotation results with both quartz and hematite indicate an increased adsorption of cationic collector in the presence of anionic collector apart from its own co-adsorption. The incorporation of oleate in between C12 amine molecules decreases the electrostatic head-head repulsion and thereby increasing the adsorption of C12 amine due to attractive tail-tail hydrophobic bonds, besides forming a closely packed adsorbed layer enhancing the hydrophobicity. The increase in oleate concentration beyond C12 amine concentration leads to the formation of soluble C12 amine-oleate complex / precipitate and the adsorption of these species decreased the flotation since the alkyl chains are in chaotical orientation with a conceivable number of head groups directing towards the solution phase. A continuum based granular flow model of charge motion that combines the inherent frictional nature of particles with its distinctly fluid-like structure is presented. Starting with Newton?s 2nd Law on a volume element of charge, we derive the velocity field in the bed free-surface and the rising en-masse region. Invoking flux conservation within the two regimes of interest then yields a (simple) differential equation for the free-surface of the charge body. Combining the velocity field gradients with a suitable constitutive choice for the shear stress completes the picture with a description of the in-situ rate of shear power dissipation in a tumbling mill ? a mechanistically correct account of power draw in a tumbling mill. Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) was used to measure the in-situ flow fields of the charge within opaque systems like tumbling mills. The accurate velocity and mass distribution derived from PEPT form the basis for direct verification of the resulting granular flow models. In this regard a wide range of milling conditions is investigated and presented in this paper.

Dense medium cyclones have been in use for washing coarse and small coals for more than 50 years. There have been modifications in its design and today these units have become indispensable for washing of Indian coals possessing difficult washing characteristics. About 53 percent of the Indian coals (coking and non-coking) are being washed in jigs, about 38 per cent are washed in dense medium cyclones while the remaining 9 per cent is treated in other units like Barrel Washers, Heavy Media Baths and Drum Separators etc. The present paper deals with the attempts made for design of industrial Dense Medium Cyclones for enhanced coal recovery. Two industrial units of 500 mm diameter and 650 mm diameter were designed with their washing capacities being 200 m3/hr and 350 m3/hr, respectively. The results of the pilot tests conducted on 500 mm cyclone treating very high Near Gravity Material coals crushed to -3.0+0.5 mm gave an ash reduction of up to 19.5 percent with the new design i.e., from a feed ash of 34.5 percent to 15.06 percent in clean coal with an appreciable yield of 45 percent in one stage.

According to the unique properties and many applications of nano silver powder, it was prepared from acid leaching tail solution. The low value residual gold and silver ions were occurred with fellow heavy metals as pollutants (Fe2+, Cu 2+and Zn2+) in acid leaching tail solution in Mouteh gold mine in Iran. Preparation of nano silver particles was achieved in two steps: first, by addition of ammonia as separation step and second by using different reagents as precipitation and extraction steps. Different controlled parameters were including pH, residence time and temperature, mixing time, and reducing reagents to metals molar ratio. Acid leaching process was carried out with sulphuric and nitric acid via suitable reductants. In order to remove copper, zinc, and silver ions from solution, all of the conditions were controlled. The optimum conditions for preparation of nano silver powder with less than 90 nm were pH 10.5, hydrazine/methanol to silver molar ratio of 3 to 4, and reduction time of 5 min in 45 °C. The results were evaluated via SEM, A.A and UV- Vis spectroscopy analytical methods.

The purity of rectorite is only about 70% after preliminary mineral processing, which has limited its application. In this research, different pulp densities, different dispersants, different dispersing methods and purification flow sheets were used to purify rectorite. The results show that it is possible to obtain high pure rectorite clay with the purity above 90% and concentrate yield between 24.9% and 29.4% by the purification process with composite dispersants, stirred mill grinding dispersion and so on. The obtained high pure rectorite can be further used in rectorite nanocomposites.

Oxiana Sepon?s mineral processing facility in south central Laos produces copper cathode using leach-autoclave-SX/EW flotation technology. Pyrite recovery in the flotation circuit is critical to the operation, as it is used to generate acid for the leach circuit. However, low pyrite recovery has been an ongoing challenge in the flotation circuit. Tailings characterization work done by Ian Wark Research Institute showed that the pyrite losses to the tail are made up of a combination of coarse liberated particles and finer particles that have been coated by clay fines. In December of 2005, a joint Cytec-Oxiana technical program was initiated to address the pyrite recovery issue. A series of diagnostic tests were performed in the Cytec Stamford Research Facility using synthetic plant water showing that the collector was precipitating as a metal salt, and was un-available for mineral attachment. The tests also identified several collector chemistries that would likely be robust in the Sepon low pH, high dissolved metal ion environment, and will not complex with ferric, ferrous, or copper in solution. With the support of the Sepon on-site engineers, an extensive, successful laboratory program was completed, which then was followed by on plant testing that showed a step wise improvement in pyrite recovery.
