The theory of sampling (TOS), and therefore representative sampling, is based on three fundamental principles: sample correctness, which handles the search for non-bias; segregation, the effects of which must be eliminated or minimised; and variance control to help achieve the desired reproducibility. After briefly reviewing these very few, albeit essential first principles of Gy’s TOS, the state-of-the-art in TOS is examined through the prism of these principles and the prospects for the future are explored, with suggestions for further research where relevant. Regarding segregation, which is currently the focus of much research, new orientations are proposed. For correctness, which takes on a major importance when it comes to sampling devices, some new, important principles that have been put forth by recent research, are described in details.CITATION:François-Bongarçon, D, 2014. The last decade has seen a very rapid development in TBM tunnelling. Some trends are purely technical or economical and others relate more to preferences of different interests. Power levels have more than doubled and thrust levels too. Shield machines are developed to be able to handle harder rock and the open TBMs are made more feasible for `difficult' rock. What is right and what is wrong is more a matter of opinion, but one thing is certain: TBMs now are a useful tool and no longer an experimental work-shop for the enthusiasts.This paper highlights some recent developments and indicates some probable future ones. A few features that have increased the open TBMs' ability to cope with ever harder rock and also to overcome problems with poor rock are discussed in detail, using the Atlas Copco JARVA Mk 27 -the most powerful TBM built so far - as a reference.

Major cities are not only the focal point for AustralianÆs work, leisure and homes, they also are the focal point for the flow of resources into the built environment, motor cars and transportation and urban consumables. The steady increases in æstockÆ and waste generation, in line with GDP growth, means that cities will become the mine sites of the future if the inherent value is recovered from these materials at end of life. The urban waste stream can be characterised as containing approximately nine per cent hydrocarbon-based materials; 57 per cent biomass-based material; 28 per cent fully mineralised materials that are inert, five per cent metals and less than one per cent of problematic materials that are potentially hazardous and toxic. In order to convert these wastes into value added inputs into the economy, a number of technological interventions are required. These æurban waste mining techniquesÆ revolve around source separation and material streaming. One issue that needs to be overcome when determining which mining technique to implement, is identifying the option that will deliver optimal value, both from a financial and a sustainability perspective. The difference between embodied energy and calorific value is a case in point. Highest net resource value (HNRV) is a concept that can assist in choosing between different resource recovery options. The assessment can be done at a strategic level, or can be used to work out material specific issues. For example, used tyres can be recovered for their energy content at an approximate cost of $120 per tonne, whereas mechanical processing of used tyres can deliver a net benefit of $192.

The prediction of acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) from mine waste materials is critically important during all stages of the mine value chain. However, to determine such geoenvironmental characteristics static and kinetic testing of individual waste units must be performed on representative samples. The importance of sample selection cannot be underestimated; it is the single most critical aspect of any geoenvironmental investigation. Poor sampling techniques and inadequate sample selection will contribute to excessive variance, difficulties in interpretation and incorrect assessment. By undertaking mesotextural characterisation based on hyperspectral mineralogical data (with sulfur assay data if available), opportunities to improve sampling strategies are presented. Such data will inform the selection of samples for low-cost total sulfur, paste pH and geoenvironmental logging, which collectively will allow for accurate AMD forecasting and improved sampling practices to be achieved. Once sampled, robust quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) protocols must be developed where the use of international certified reference standards become obligatory. This is currently not practised, resulting in inter-laboratory discrepancies when undertaking waste classification. Further improvements in geoenvironmental characterisation testing lies in the adoption of blended static testing protocols, whereby blends of waste materials can be efficiently tested so as to give an early forecast as to whether they will produce acidic or metal-laden drainage. Such information is integral in developing a waste schedule that will allow for a non-acid forming waste landform to be constructed right from the start of the operational phase. Ultimately, improvements in this discipline lie in technological innovations with regards to mineralogical characterisation, and by offering geoscience and minerals engineering students a competent education in the discipline. Collectively, this will empower a step-change in AMD prediction and waste handling, and will make the realisation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals a reality, rather than a dream.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A and Dominy, S C, 2017. This iron ore mine site, located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, commenced operations in 1998, with ore derived by mining of open-cut pits in Channel Iron Deposits (CIDs). A portion of the ore extracted at the mine is processed at wet processing plants that produce both ore saleable product and waste fines (i.e. tailings) slurry. The waste fines produced at the wet plants are presently stored within Waste Fines Cells (WFCs).Waste fines cells A (WFCA) and B (WFCB) are located within an Autonomous Haul System (AHS) area and consist of embankments that span the width of the pit in east-west alignments. Technical studies and design analyses were carried out to support embankment raises and ongoing development of the WFCs. During operation and development of the WFCs, a multitude of simultaneous activities took place to the immediate north and south of WFCA respectively. These activities included the construction of the embankment raises using the AHS fleet, mining of the CID to not only mine the ore but to also create future deposition space for WFCB, blasting next to the WFC embankments as part of the mining activities, seepage collection and dewatering of the pit in the vicinity of the WFC.This paper discusses the material characteristics, design approach, construction staging and equipment requirements, blasting near embankments, water management, facility consequence category and closure concept.CITATION:Boshoff, J J, 2018. "The mandate of the 2005 VALMIN Code to provide ‘(all) reliable, thorough, understandable material information required by investors and their advisers when making investment decisions’ requires that due diligence for tenure be full and thorough. Yet a published due diligence would often appear to be simply a list of tenures allegedly held without any commitment as to the standing of the tenure as safe and secure or otherwise.The value of due diligence for tenure, as mandated in the 2012 JORC Code and the 2005 VALMIN Code, must focus on compliance rather than simply on ‘vital statistics’. Enforcement in every jurisdiction in Australia focuses on penalties (some more harsh than others) for non-compliance, which, in turn and most importantly, reflects directly on security of tenure. Some 22 Acts (on average) impinge on security of tenure and fundamentally underpin the security of any mineral asset.This paper will outline regulatory processes to demonstrate how tenure compliance is achieved and argue that the rigorous application of good practices in tenure evaluation will lead to more of this information being made available on a regular basis.The paper will then focus on further practical examples of tenure compliance failures, the application of these to the requirements of the JORC and VALMIN Codes and due diligence that failed to fulfil the mandate. Examples will be given that alerted other professionals using the JORC Code to complex geological and mining situations of which they were unaware in their valuations.Finally, the author will make a personal plea for tenure to be considered at the commencement of any reporting process.CITATION:Evans-Wheeler, J, 2016. The nickel deposits within the Honeymoon Well project area (26¦ 40'S, 120¦ 25'E), located 45 km south of Wiluna, occur in the northern part of the Agnew-Wiluna belt (Figure 1; Hill et at, 1990). The project area is covered by up to 50 m of transported material which greatly hampers both exploration and an understanding of the bedrock geology. Since 1990 intensive exploration has increased the resource from 10 Mt at one per cent Ni to 134 Mt at 0.76 per cent Ni in five deposits (0.4 per cent Ni cut-off, resources above 300 m depth, December 1994). This includes a massive sulphide resource of 2.5 Mt at 3.4 per cent Ni.

"The Chesney deposit, located 4 km south-east of Cobar consists of three copper-gold rich shoots that lie within a larger, copper dominant lode. A fourth gold rich shoot is located adjacent to the main deposit. The deposit exhibits a strong structural control on mineralisation, as brittle deformation during subvertical extension provided the requisite structural traps to precipitate sulfides from solution. It is postulated that the Great Chesney Fault acted as a fluid conduit, conveying fluids to the site of orebody formation. The continual supply of fluids resulted in cyclic brittle deformation when the fluid pressure exceeded the lithostatic pressure and the tensile strength of the Great Cobar Slate.Evidence supports the hypothesis that ore deposit formation was controlled by: a supply of mineralised fluids transported along the Great Chesney Faulta suitable location for the mineralised fluids to accumulate, accommodated by vertical extension and dilation in certain locationsthe creation of suitable structural traps to capture the sulfides. These traps formed as a result of fault-valve behaviour. A method for the determination of the gas content of coal seams is presented which improves upon existing methods. The method makes use of a gravitational technique for measurement of the gas desorbed. The amount of lost gas is estimated by determining an empirical relationship relating the desorption of gas with time for each sample separately. This is to replace the assumption that desorp- tion follows a square root law with time. Laboratory investigations have been conducted which indicate that the square root desorption law does not hold good for carbon dioxide. Results of investigations on various factors influencing the technique are presented. It is shown that co-efficients of the empirical equation are dependent upon the elapsed time and the period of observation. Data about gas pressure measurements is presented and it is concluded that gas pressure can be approxi- mated to 0.6 times the pressure below a column of water equal to the depth of cover. Mining in Western Australia places significant economic and environmental responsibility on Government and the mining industry. Groundwater abstraction is regulated by the Department of Water. The Department has recently issued a guideline for Pilbara mines, and this paper focuses on the Pilbara for its examples and studies. The guideline is intended to form the basis for developing a statewide policy, consistent with reporting and assessment policy.With rapid expansion of the mining industry between 2005 and 2008, the groundwater resources in the Pilbara region of the State are under increasing pressure. Significant new management and regulatory issues arising recently include: cumulative impact assessment; disposal of dewatering excess by discharge, sharing or reinjection; life-of-mine approvals and closure planning; closure water quality including metals concentration in pit lakes; and in situ leaching mining methods and their impacts on regional water resources (and change of State Government Policy with respect to uranium mining).

The Project Hobson tunnel excavation was the first use in New Zealand of an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM). The tunnelling on the project was very successful and break-through was achieved three weeks ahead of program, demonstrating that tunnelling can be undertaken in Auckland with a high degree of cost certainty.Project Hobson involved the replacement of an existing 90 year old above ground sewer that crosses Hobson Bay in Auckland, New Zealand, and which had reached the end of its economic life, with a 3 km long, 3.7 m internal diameter segmentally lined bored tunnel. The NZD$ 118 M project has provided several environmental benefi ts to the Owner, Watercare Services Ltd and the local community:· provide capacity to meet projected growth in the region,· virtually eliminate wastewater overflows into Hobson Bay and the Waitemata Harbour, and· remove an obtrusive visual feature and open up the bay for recreational purposes.Auckland’s bedrock is a weak sandstone/siltstone (East Coast Bays Formation), subject to infilled paleovalleys. The geology in the region has been significantly influenced by volcanic activity; 49 volcanoes are present within 20 km of the city centre.The paper describes the design and construction challenges for the projects, including TBM performance, ‘sticky spoil’ management, and risks associated with basalt lava flows and two paleovalleys. The paper also highlights the reasons for the success of the project, including a rigorous approach to risk management during design, and effective planning during construction. Other useful data such as the effect on the watertable caused by closed face tunnelling, and ‘faceloss’ estimates derived from settlement arrays are included in the paper.Project Hobson also saw the successful implementation of a Geotechnical Baseline Report – one of the first uses of this type of document in Australasia.

The variability of gold mineralization in the Warrego Gold Pod is described by classical statistical techniques using sample distrib- utions and analysis of variance; and by the use of geostatistical variogram analysis to define the spatial variability and anisotropy of the mineralization. Comparison is made between declared mine production from the Nineteen Stope and a series of ore reserve estimates derived by manual, numerical and disjunctive kriging methods.

The treatment of mixed lead carbonate and lead sulphide concentrates at Mount Isa presents a problem which is unique ,in the lead smelting world; a problem whose solution is far from simple, and is not yet complete. Two years of study under plant conditions have definitely proved, however, that a most satisfactory sinter can be made in a single-pass roast.The object of this paper is to present a brief record of the development of the single-pass roast and a resume of current practice in the smelting plant. The sintering operation is discussed in greater detail, as it is upon this phase of the work that every item in the smelter operating programme depends.The smelter, to-day, presents a very much simplified layout, equipped for economical, straightforward operation, requiring, however, very careful and constant supervision, due to the extreme delicacy of the sintering operation and to the rapid and wide variati9n in the nature of the concentrates which are to be handled.

A technique is presented for the integrated forward modelling of the three-dimensional structure and the geophysical response of multiply deformed terrains. This technique allows information collected by field geologists and geophysicist to be reconciled by the development of a simplified kinematic structural history of the area. The structural modelling simulates the deformation history of the area in terms of a succession of structural events, such as folds, shear zones and intrusions. The interaction of these events with a starting stratigraphy results in the prediction of the geometry of the structures. By specifying geophysical rock properties for the units in the initial stratigraphy predictions are possible for the potential field anomalies for gravity and magnetics. This approach is suited to a range of applications, and its uses in the modelling of regional structures, testing of geophysical data processing, volume balancing, multiply constrained inversion and training are discussed.

In this study, a systematic examination of the scale and variety of micro-structures in coal using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) has been carried out, using coal samples of differing stages of coalification from the Bowen Basin and New Zealand. SEM provides detail of various micro-structural features and shows that a variety of micron-sized fractures and cavities are present in coals. These are differentiated into three pore types: fracture porosity, phyteral porosity and matrix porosity. Fracture porosity is generally associated with bright coals (although it has been shown that micro-fractures are present in maceral fragments from the dull coal layers). Characteristically the macro- and micro- fractures form a continuous structural fabric through the bright coal layers and thus make a significant contribution to overall permeability. The macro- and micro-fractures appear to have been formed during the process of coalification rather than being formed due to shrinkage during methane extraction, as most of them are infilled with secondary minerals. In contrast, phyteral and matrix porosity is associated with the dull coal layers that are composed of plant fragments or a heterogeneous mixture of macerals. Like the macro- and micro-fractures, the continuity of the observed cavities suggest that these too are a significant contribution to overall permeability, and therefore play a major role in the transmissibility of methane at a level between diffusion at the micropore level and laminar flow at the macro-fracture level. Due to different spacing, orientation and persistence of individual fractures and cavities, the rate of methane transmissibility through a coalseam will vary according to coal rank, coal type and the organic precursors from which the coal was derived. This is important as a knowledge of the micro-structure system and its relationship to coal type and coal rank, plays an important consideration in: a) gas drainage modelling, b) enhancing permeability by inducing fractures and c) predicting the occurrence of outbursts.

With so many offers on the table and companies outbidding each other to attract the best talent, many new professionals are being lured in by the big money, sometimes at the expense of a satisfying career and a sustainable lifestyle. What should we consider when accepting a new position? What are our values, and how do these drive our decision making? This paper examines our core values as people and makes some observations about what it takes to really succeed in the mining industry.

As students progress further into a degree, the decision of vocation selection, and even more importantly û securing employment in a particular industry sector, can become quite daunting. However, with a little initiative, students can overcome these issues by not only researching what employment opportunities exist, but by applying for summer vacation employment. Undergraduate vacation employment, especially with a world-leading hydrometallurgy research organisation such as the Parker Centre, can dramatically alter a studentÆs perspective of particular industries and possibly even alter their selection of vocation pursuits upon graduating. Students can also use vacation employment to enhance their networking capabilities, technical skills and knowledge by dealing with challenging new topics such as sulfur dioxide leaching, which is also discussed in this article.

This paper has been written collaboratively by members of the International Mining VR Group. It is the first of a series of papers. Mining in the 21st century is a high technology industry that strives to reduce risk and improve safety through the use of improved processes and procedures. This risk reduction process is aligned with the innovative use of technologies often developed for other industries. Computer-based visualisation systems and their content are such innovative technologies, in particular the use of virtual environment systems and mixed reality. A primary objective of developing virtual environment systems and the mixed reality content displayed in them for the mining industry is to allow mine workers and operators to practice mine processes and demonstrate competency in tasks that will be encountered in day-to-day mining operations at mine sites. It is anticipated that providing easy access to virtual environment systems will facilitate the avoidance of high-risk situations through improved knowledge, skills, understanding and decision making. Via virtual environment systems mine workers will also be able to practice infrequent or emergency events and maintain preparedness for such events. Day-to-day mining practices can also be evaluated. The rapid pace of technology innovation and the decreasing cost of simulation hardware and software present a plethora of technology to the uninitiated. This can be confusing. In this paper taxonomy is presented that classifies hardware, what it can display and also content that can be included or displayed on the various computer-based visualisation systems. The taxonomy provides insight into where technology can and may be implemented in the future as virtual environments are a dynamic and evolving technology. The taxonomy should also assist in the decision making process when scoping or selecting technology for a particular purpose.
