Sixty new ternary equiatomic compounds are reported with a hexagonal crystal structure that is isostructural with or very similar to Fe2P, D3h-P62m. HoNiAl is a typical example, with a, = 6.9893 ± 0.0003Å, C, = 3.8204 ± 0.003Å, and c/a = 0.54 7. Three holmium atoms occupy (g): x,0,1/2 three aluminum atoms occupy (f): x,0,0; one nickel atom occupies (b): 0,0,1/2; and two nickel atoms occupy (c): 4, + , 0. The nonequivalent 1(b) and 2(c) sites give rise to two sets of unequal interatornic distances (i.e., Ho-Ni and Al-NL in the case above), which account for the prevalence of Fe2P-type tertmry compounds and the scarcity of binary examples. Unit-cell constants are presented for the sixty compounds and density measurements on the compounds HoNiAl and UFeGa confirm that three formula weights are present per unit cell. Neutron and X-ray powder diffraction intensity measurements were made on CeNiAl and HoNiAl, respectively. The atomic posiLiotml parameters in CeNiAl were determined from neutron data to be x = 0.580 5 0.001 for cerium and 0.219 5 0.001 for aluminum. An investigation of the quasibinary section between the binary compounds CeNi2 and CeA12 revealed a new ternary compound CeNiAl. The compound has a hexagonal structure and is isostructural with the prototype compound Fe2P. Additional examples discovered or confirmed in this investigation provide a total of sixty ternary compounds that are isostructural with or closely related to Fe2P. Previous investigators1'2 reported the unit-cell constants for the hexagonal compounds UFeA1, UCoAl, UIrA1, ZrNiAl, ZrNiGa, HfNiAl, and HfNiGa and the present investigation has confirmed that the compounds are isostructural with Fe2P. Independently, Steeb and petzow3 reported the same structure type for UCoAl, UIrA1, and UNiA1. However, the present results suggest a different atomic site occupancy for the component atoms in the three compounds. A detailed investigation of the relative positions of the three kinds of atoms in the compounds CeNiAl and HoNiAl will be discussed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The equiatomic alloys were prepared from elements of 99.9+ pct purity by arc melting under a helium-argon atmosphere. After homogenization at temperatures from 700" to 900' C, a metallographic examination was performed by conventional methods, and density measurements were carried out by the immersion method in CCl4. A powder sample was prepared for diffraction studies by crushing a portion of the annealed button. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained with a Debye-Scherrer camera, in which the annealed powder was glued to a quartz filament, and indexed with the aid of a Bunn chart. Unit-cell constants were calculated from the computer program of Mueller, Heaton, and Miller4 and d spacings were obtained by the program of Mueller, Meyer, and Simonsen.5 The intensity values were calculated from the relation I, ~ (m)(L.P.)F2 by a computer program written by Busing, Martin, and Levy.6 The absorption and temperature correction factors were neglected. An X-ray study of HoNiAl was carried out to take advantage of: large differences in atomic scattering factors for holmium and aluminum, X-ray patters free of background darkening, negligible oxidation at room temperature, and negligible weight loss in the preparation of this alloy. The neutron diffraction studies were made on a powder sample of CeNiAl contained in a -in. diam V tube and a pattern was obtained with neutrons of wavelength The neutron scattering factors employed (x 10-12 cm). In contrast to the scattering amplitude for X-rays, cesium does not have the largest cross section, however, there is a sufficient difference in the neutron scattering amplitudes to distinguish between the atomic species. The neutron transmission was high, 86 pct; therefore, absorption corrections were not necessary for the cylindrical sample. Most reflections could not be observed individually, because of the relatively large unit cell (a = 6.9756 and c = 4.0206Å) and relatively short neutron wavelength; therefore, the intensity of grouped reflections was considered. The Kennicott modification7 of the Busing-Martin-Levy program6 was employed to determine the identity of the atoms at the various lattice sites and the positional parameters. RESULTS A structure for the prototype compound Fe2P was first reported by Hendricks and Kosting;8 however, the structure was in error. The correct structure, as reported by Rundqvist and Jellinek,9 is as follows. The unit-cell constants and volumes per formula weight (V/M) are given in Table I for the sixty compounds examined in this investigation and classified as Fe2P-type compounds. The structure type was determined initially from a comparison of the unit-cell constants of HoNiAl with other known examples of this structure type1' and from the density of HoNiAl, given in Table 11. The density indicated that three formula weights comprised a unit cell, as in the prototype compound Fe2P. The assignment of the three species to lattice sites was made initially on the basis of atomic size. The behavior of the reverse-combustion process in a linear adiabatic system is theoretically investigated by means of an idealized physical model. T his model is described by a pair of non-linear equations involving heat and mass transfer which are coupled by a concentration-dependent reaction-rate function of the Ar-rhenius type. The differential equations governing the quasi steady-state temperature and concentration distributions are approximately solved by using either physical or mathematical simplifications. It is shown that the reverse -combustion process can be mechanistically described by simple physical models whose behavior equations can be solved formally. It is further demonstrated that the derived reverse-combustion equations can be solved numerically within the error limits for the experimental data. The theoretically predicted peak temperature-flux-velocity relationship exhibits reasonable agreement with experimental data obtained from Athabasca tar sand. The principal contribution of this work lies in its usefulness as a starting point for developing a more comprehensive theory. A description of the vaporization-coking process must be obtained; then, the theory must be extended to three dimensions to include geometrical effects and heat losses. INTRODUCTION In another paper,'" he physical processes visualized as occurring during reverse combustion have been described. In this paper, the extent to which an elementary theory can account for experimental observations is determined. Theoretical results that can be used to estimate some of the behavior characteristics of importance to this process are also presented. Since it is not possible to include all the features of the combustion mechanism of which we are currently aware, the mathematical formulation refers to the highly idealized system developed herein. This simplified physical model is based on the simultaneous transfer of mass and heat accompanied by a chemical reaction: it is described mathematically by a pair of coupled, nonlinear differential equations. Similar sets of equations have been studied extensively in the field of flame propagation; an excellent review of these investigations has been published by Evans.1 FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM It will be recalled that the experiments are performed with a thin-walled cylindrical tube that is uniformly packed with sand and oil. The system is maintained substantially adiabatic by means of heat supplied externally in such a way that the radial temperature gradient in any plane normal to the axis of the tube approaches zero. Initially, the tube is at ambient temperature, except at one end where it is rapidly heated to a predetermined temperature. When the prescribed temperature is achieved, air is caused to flow into the cold end of the tube. As the oxygen in the air stream contacts the hot oil, a localized exothermic reaction takes place. The generated heat is conducted and convected away from the reaction zone so that definite temperature and concentration profiles are rapidly established and move uniformly in a direction opposite to that of the air flow (Fig. 1). As a consequence of this mode of oxidation, all of the oxygen in the air is consumed; then, the remaining nitrogen and the gaseous combustion products sweep out all vaporized hydrocarbons and leave an immobile hydrocarbon-coke on the sand.

WHAT are known as insulating firebrick are lightweight firebrick with low thermal conductivity designed primarily for use in direct contact with furnace gases. These are a recent development in the refractories industry, and are really an outgrowth of the type of insulating brick suitable for use behind refractory walls developed by the insulation manufacturers. To differentiate between these two types of brick, the manufacturers have recently agreed upon the use of the term "Insulating Firebrick" to apply to the type of brick suited for use in direct contact with furnace gases, and the term "Insulating Brick" for the type suitable for use behind refractory walls. Insulation was applied to steam pipes as far back as 1900. This was a low-temperature insulation, the most common type being magnesia blocks. The next development was applying insulation to the outside of furnace walls, a service which necessitated an insulating material of higher temperature resistance. Natural diatomaceous earth, both in the powdered and brick form, was used; this was efficient and is still used extensively for backing up refractory walls where the inner surface temperature of the insulation does not exceed 1600° F.

The analysis of Kikuchi pattersns of exct ovientalions from single cryslals and paired Kikuchi lines from single and overlapping crystals is shown to be useful and quanlitalve and is applied to Phase transfovnzcitions including ordering, spinodals, mavten-silic, and nuclealion and growth pyocesses. 112 pinciple, the analysis of exacl orientations enables the crystal system and the Bravais lattice of a crystal to he determined. The advantages of the davk-field imaging technigure for detecting vevy small precipitates are also described. ALTHOUGH Kikuchi electron-diffraction patterns were first observed nearly 40 years ago,' little systematic application seems to have been made of them, until fairly recently during electron microscopy, when their usefulness in contrast experimen and for determining exact orientations8'9 has been pointed out. With the availability of gonio-metric specimen tilting stages it has now become possible to make much wider use of diffraction patterns, particularly the Kikuchi pattern, which is the main subject of this paper. The treatment presented here is not exhaustive but it is hoped that it will stimulate more use of Kikuchi patterns during electron-microscopy investigations. The Kikuchi pattern is formed as a result of Bragg diffraction of the inelastically scattered electrons produced during the interaction of the beam and thick specimens, The important feature of these patterns is that they give an accurate representation of the symmetry of the crystal being investigated, so that it is possible to identify crystal systems and even the Bravais lattice. This means that new structures, e.g., formed in phase transformations, may be identified during normal electron microscopy, so that Kikuchi-pattern analyses considerably extend the uses of the electron microscope. Recent work has also shown that dark-field images are more informative than bright-field images, particularly, for observing small precipitates. The second part of this paper discusses some applications and advantages of dark-field imaging in studies of two-phase systems. 1) DIFFRACTION PATTERNS 1.1) Spot Patterns. Electron-diffraction spot patterns have their limitations because of the importance of the form factor on the intensities and shape of the reciprocal lattice points. Because of the extension of these points into relrods, reflections are possible over a large angular range (+5 deg) and the patterns from thin regions can be complicated because second-layer relrods intersect the reflecting sphere. Spot patterns can thus give only an approximate idea of the crystallography unless the foil is tilted into exact orientation. In this case the spot pattern is symmetrical, with equal numbers of spots on the positive and negative zone directions about the origin. Such cases are necessary for structural analyses and have been used recently to determine the crystal structure of the ordered Ta64C phase." Exact orientation means that the plane of the reciprocal lattice lies exactly normal to the incident beam as shown in Fig. 1(b). It should be noted that in exact orientations the angle of reflection is less than the exact Bragg angle 9 so that the reciprocal lattice points lie to the outside of the sphere, Fig. 1(b). This deviation is denoted by the parameter s and in the usual convention4 s is negative for exact orientations and, of course, zero at the exact reflecting position shown in Fig. l(a). In order to avoid secondary reflections from thickness relrods it is advantageous to work in thicker regions of foils. Diffraction from thick regions may also produce Kikuchi patterns and as dis-

The morphological stability of the planar solid-liquid interface in dilute ternary alloys, undergoing steady-state unidirectional solidification, is analyzed in terms of both the constitutional supercooling principle and the perturbation methods recently developed by Mullins and Sekerka. First, various steady-state solutions for the two solute distributions ahead of a planar interface are examined. The nature of the solutions depends on the size and concentration dependence of the off-diagonal diffusion coefficients. W~thin the framework of the constitutional supercooling principle, a cumulative contribution to instability frorn the two solutes is found to exist in the absence of diffusional interaction. It is shown that the latter can produce a further enhancement of instability or can have a stabilizing influence, depending on the form of the liquidus surface and on the sign of the solute-solute interaction. A perturbation analysis, which ignores diffusional interaction, verifies the cumulative influence of lhe solute fields and demonstrates that the Mullins-Sekerka stability criterion for binary systems (with capillarity accounted for) can be readily extended for application to ternary systems. SOME time ago, Tiller et al.' calculated the solute concentration distribution ahead of the planar solid-liquid interface of binary alloys undergoing steady-state unidirectional solidification. An earlier qualitative proposal that the transition from planar to nonplanar growth morphologies is associated solely with the onset of constitutional supercooling in the liquid layer ahead of the moving interface2 was used in conjunction with this calculation to put the now well-known constitutional supercooling (C-S) stability criterion into quantitative terms. Mullins and Sekerka,3 in a recent and very elegant analysis, established a more complete criterion (hereafter referred to as the M-S criterion). Interfacial stability was investigated by determining the time derivative of the amplitude of a sinusoidal perturbation of infinitesimal amplitude which had been introduced into the originally planar shape of the moving interface. Of particular importance is the fact that capillarity was included in the boundary conditions of their calculation. The purpose of the present paper is to extend all of this earlier work on dilute binary systems for application to dilute ternary alloy solidification. The analysis is divided into three sections. In the first the two solute distributions ahead of a moving planar interface are considered. Mathematical solutions are de- termined for situations in which: a) diffusional interaction is negligible, 6) diffusional interaction must be considered but circumstances permit use of constant diffusion coefficients, and c) the concentration dependence of off-diagonal diffusion coefficients can be described by first-order dilute solution approximations. In the next section, a stability criterion analogous to the C-S criterion is developed and the influence of diffusional interaction on interface stability is analyzed. Finally, the perturbation formalism of Mullins and Sekerka, with capillarity included in the boundary conditions, is extended for analysis of ternary systems in which diffusional interaction is negligible. The study of interface stability in binary systems usually commences with the assumption that the equilibrium distribution coefficient and the slope of the liquidus line are constant at values corresponding to infinite dilution. Similar assumptions have not been introduced into the present treatment; that is, we do not assume planar solidus and liquidus surfaces joined by tie lines which yield constant distribution coefficients. The latter involves the assumption of no ther-modynamic interaction between solute species in both the solid and liquid. We consider a ternary phase diagram for which the solidus and liquidus surfaces are, in general, nonplanar and of course pass through the corresponding binary solidus and liquidus lines. These lines are not assumed to have constant slope. In the dilute regions we are concerned with, the following assumptions are made: i) The solidus and liquidus surfaces are of a form such that both the solidus and liquidus temperatures are monotonically varying functions of each solute concentration. ii) The tie lines are such that the equilibrium distribution coefficient of a given solute is greater than unity for every point on the solidus (or liquidus) surface or it is less than unity for every point. STEADY-STATE SOLUTE DISTRIBUTIONS IN THE LIQUID As will be demonstrated in the next section, a knowledge of the steady-state solute profiles is not a necessary prerequisite for the formulation of a ternary C-S stability criterion. However, in that details, such as the complete description of the equilibrium liquidus temperature profile, require an evaluation of the solute distributions, the overall treatment is enhanced if these distributions are determined. Consider a ternary system (solvent plus solutes 1 and 2) for which a planar solid-liquid interface is in unidirectional motion at constant velocity V. At this stage it is unnecessary to limit ourselves to dilute solutions. For a stationary frame of reference the generalized forms of Fick's equations are:

DURING the last year or so, with higher prices for gold and silver, many old properties in the West have come back to life. Almost every profitable producer in the old days has been considered, and the reasons for its shut-down investigated. If it seems likely that modern ore-finding, mining, and metallurgical methods, and S35 gold can again put the property on a profitable basis, someone can usually be found to back the venture. Methods of rejuvenation vary with the property, of course, but the following outline of what has been done with one group of mines in Idaho is fairly typical and may be suggestive to others. The Golden Chariot gold-silver properties, near Silver City, consist of seven old mines, working a vein system striking north and south, which had a productive length of some 3500 ft. The vein is a quartz-filled fissure with granite walls. Gold occurs in native, and with silver in the form of electrum which is the natural alloy of the two metals. Silver also occurs in a variety of sulfides. From 1064 to 1876, these old properties were worked intensively to an average depth of about 700 ft., through seven shafts which range in

Fires in mines are so serious in their consequences and of such frequent occurrence, that their causes and the means of extinguishing them are certainly questions of the greatest interest to a large part of the engineering profession. We have already, in this country, many mines which have been burning for years, and though our hard anthracite is so difficult to ignite that for a quarter of a century after it was first discovered it mas not known how to burn it except with the aid of an artificial blast, yet most of the fires which have occurred underground have been in anthracite mines, and in the coal itself. The injury which these fires have caused to properties in various parts of the anthracite regions, and the cost of extinguishing them, would amount to many millions of dollars, and they have also occasioned the loss of many valuable lives. It is not surprising, therefore, that the subject has already attracted much attention, and the exercise of great ingenuity; and the present communication is made less with the expectation of announcing anything new, than with the object of putting upon record the present state of our knowledge on this subject, or, in other words, of indicating how defective are the present means of combating underground conflagrations. Causes of Mine Fires.—Even upon the surface, fire is a terrible foe to contend with, and there is probably no other which inspires such thorough and well-founded alarm. With what feelings, then, must we look upon this destructive element, when its field is in the narrow galleries of a mine, where the poisonous products of combustion, spreading in every direction, protect, in the most effectual manner, the fire itself from the attacks of extinguishers, while, if the face of attack be ventilated so as to enable then] to approach the seat of the fire, the air current simply increases the extent and violence of the conflagration. Fires underground originate in as various ways as those on the surface, and it is scarcely necessary to say that, except in the rare cases where they are the result of design, they are invariably classed as " accidents," and most generally as " unavoidable accidents." Laboratory model flow tests have been made to simulate field conditions of partial pressure rnaintenance by dispersed gas drive on rocks having sandstone-type porosity. In this production method there is a significant saturation gradient between injection and production wells. A means of calculating relative permeability characteristics. from partial pressure rnaintenance flow tests has been developed. This method takes into account the saturation gradient. These kg/ko characteristics are identical to those for solution and external gas drives. This method of calculation, which has been proved experimentally, has limitations; however, it is valid for cases likely to be encountered in field prediction of partial pressure maintenance performance. The production performance of a hypothetical reservoir has been calculated for several different injection programs, involving both full and partial pressure maintenance. Results indicate that the maxinum oil recovery by these gas injection programs is obtained by full pressure mainte- nance at the original bubble point. Correspondingly lower oil recoveries are obtained by postponing gas injection and/or by reducing the degree of pressure maintenance. INTRODUCTION Dispersed gas injection is an important method of recovering additional oil beyond that obtainable by pressure depletion alone. The injected gas acts as a source of additional energy to displace oil from the rock formation as well as to retard oil shrinkage in the reservoir. In practice, gas injection is usually started after the reservoir pressure has fallen below the original bubble point. For various reasons sufficient gas is generally not injected to completely maintain the pressure in the reservoir. So, injecting gas at a declining reservoir pressure results in a combined external and solution gas drive. These two oil displacement processes are characterized by different gross saturation distributions in the reservoir. The external gas drive, like all frontal drive processes, inherently results in an oil saturation which increases from the injection wells to the producing wells. In the solution gas drive there is essentially a uniform oil saturation throughout the reservoir, provided the field is being depleted uniformly. It has been customary to predict oil recovery performance under partial pressure maintenance by a method which does not take into account the saturation gradient1. It has been shown2 that neglecting the presence of a saturation gradient can cause considerable error. It is the purpose of this paper to develop and present an improved method of predicting partial pressure maintenance performance of reservoirs including, where necessary. the effects of well arrangement. From the laboratory standpoint, this problem involves the measurement of the basic flow behavior (relative permeability characteristics) under partial pressure maintenance conditions. Recent research- as shown that for rocks having sandstone-type porosity, the relative permeability characteristics are identical for solution gas drive and complete pressure maintenance external gas drives. The importance of magnesium alloys in the manufacture of aircraft engines has been realized for many years. A concentrated effort has been exerted in the laboratories of the Dow Chemical Co. to develop magnesium-base alloys with improved properties at elevated temperatures whereby greater advantage can be taken of the inherent lightness of these materials. In an earlier publication, attention was called to the superior tensile properties and resistance to creep of cerium-containing magnesium alloys at temperatures up to 700°F. More recently, additional data on magnesium-cerium alloys have been furnished by Murphy and Payne. The present paper deals with the mechanical properties of sand-cast magnesium alloys containing zinc, at temperatures up to 500°F. The study includes binary Mg-Znt alloys containing up to 10 pct zinc and several ternary and some polynary alloys based on the Mg-~Zn,f Mg-jZn, Mg-4.4211, Mg-6Zn, and Mg-roZn binaries. The compositional variation in the tensile properties, hardness, and creep at room and elevated temperatures, and in the electrical conductivity at room temperature has been determined. The results of these tests show that many zinc-containing magnesium alloys exhibit resistance to creep at elevated temperatures significantly higher than that of present commercial magnesium alloys, but lower than that of alloys of the magnesium-cerium type. In addition, they have high tensile properties at room and elevated temperatures and high conductivity. This combination of mechanical properties and conductivity indicates that these alloys should be given serious consideration for commercial applications involving exposure to temperatures higher than those to which present commercial magnesium alloys can be taken safely. Literature The properties of sand-cast magnesium alloys containing zinc as a principal alloying element have not been investigated very extensively, especially at elevated temperatures. The following remarks, which are confined to sand-cast alloys, will serve as a summary of the most important references on this phase of magnesium metallurgy. The first recorded determination of the tensile strength of binary Mg-Zn alloys as a function of zinc content was reported by Aitchison. Similar studies, including the measurement of elongation and hardness, have been performed by Gann and Winston,' Dumas and Rockaert, Haugh-ton and Prytherch,6 and by Spitaler, the last being reported by Beck.' A slight superiority in the tensile strength of chill-cent Mg + 8 es alloy Over the sand-cast alloy was noted by Maybrey.8 That alloys of magnesium containing 5 to 12 pct zinc

(Continuing the discussion of the paper of James Johnston, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 85, January, 1914, pp. 107 to 133.) This paper cannot fail of being of great interest and value to all who are interested in the cyanide process, on account of the important developments which it records. Mr. Johnston is to be commended for the large amount of detail which he gives, and the company and its management for permitting the publication of data of this character, which while of great value to others could well be considered private property. It might be discussed from a number of standpoints: First, as an example of recent practice in mill and cyanide plant construction; second, the mill practice; third, the cyanide practice; and fourth, the new features in cyanide treatment involved. Perhaps a more vivid way of expressing it would be : First, the equipment or tools with which the various operations are carried on, are they the best and most efficient which could have been selected for their respective uses; and, second, is the best use in every case made of these tools? It may be well inquired is the highest possible recovery of silver made at the lowest cost per ounce recovered? For after all, the making of the greatest ultimate profit is inseparably associated with successful metallurgical practice; there must therefore be at all times a careful balance maintained between recovery and cost of obtaining it. I wish to call attention in a very general way to the equipment used and to an anticipation of questions which are bound to arise in this connection. However, the. bulk of my discussion will be confined to the presentation of certain additional data, together with a more or less general discussion showing the line of development which leads up to the present practice and .the applicability of certain features of it to similar problems elsewhere. There are a number of vital points of broad general interest involved in Nipissing low-grade practice upon which metallurgists will by no means be agreed to which I wish to call particular attention in the hope that it will lead to the presentation of data y others of practice in other districts which will' assist in reconciling this divergence of opinion.

THERE is a constant reiteration in some quarters that technical societies are autocratic and that democracy is utterly lacking and that members would welcome democratic societies in which they had full, control of affairs. While we may not speak for other societies, than our own, in so far as th's Institute is concerned such charges- can only come from people uninformed as to the circumstances. It. is no curtailment of the democratic privileges of the members that a -slate is prepared by the Nominating Committee to be voted on at the annual meeting. The Constitution of the, institute stipulates how the nominating committee shall; be chosen and who shall compose it, which prevents anything like- a- clique controlling- the situation. The Constitution further provides how the nominees shall be distributed geographically and the by-laws specify geographical boundaries: for-these nomination districts. ThE formation of the (100) [001) texture in 3-1/4 pct Si-Fe strip was first reported by Assmus ef a1.l in 1957. Since then much experimental work has been carried out with a view to establishing the mechanism involved. The papers cited above state that the (100) [001] texture was developed in strip rolled from material melted and cast in vacuum. (The impurity content of the ingot is reported as 0.005 pct.) The present note records that similar results can be obtained in material processed by powder metallurgy. A processing schedule is described.which enables the texture to be formed in strip up to 0.010 in. thick, but there seems no reason why this should not be achieved in thicker strip, provided that large grains are developed after sintering. The materials were prepared from Carbonyl Iron Powder Grade MCP (particle size 5 to 30 p) of the International Nickel Co. (Mond) Ltd. The powder contains about 0.15 pct 0, 0.01 pct C, 0.004 pct N, <0.002 pct S, $0.005 pct Mg and Si, and 0.4 pct Ni— that is, it is substantially free from metallic impurities other than nickel, which is thought to be unimportant in the present work. The silicon powder was 99.9 pct purity, or material of transistor quality (ground in pestle and mortar). The mixed powders (3-1/4 pct Si to 96-3/4 pct Fe) are heated in hydrogen at 350" and 650°C to deoxidize the iron before sintering loose at temperatures between 1350" and 1460°C (depending upon the ultimate thickness of strip required) for up to 24 hr. The object of the high-temperature sinter is to develop a large grain size at this stage. Alternatively, the loose sintering can be done at a lower temperature followed by rolling or pressing and then annealing at temperatures between 1350" and 1460°C. Both methods produce large grains, which remain large throughout the process. The compact is then hot-rolled to approximately 1/8 in. with high-temperature interstage anneals if necessary. This step is taken to avoid intercrystalline cracking which would occur if the material of such large grain size were cold-worked. The bar is then annealed at 1050°C and reduced to its final thickness by approximately 50-pct reductions and 1050°C interstage anneals. Throughout the process the dew point of the hydrogen furnace atmosphere is maintained at about -40°C. Samples were annealed in hydrogen at various temperatures and times. Secondary recrystalliza-tion to (100) [001] was developed on the thinner material (i.e., up to 0.002 in.) by annealing in hydrogen at 1050" to 1200°C with a dew point of - 40°C or in vacuum (10-5 Torr) at 1050°C. With the thicker materials (i.e., up to 0.010 in.) the best results were obtained by annealing in hydrogen at 1200°C with a dew point of - 55°C. Complete secondary recrystal-lization to (100) [001] textures was obtained. Above these temperatures secondary recrystallization to (110) [001] tended to develop. The final annealing of samples was normally carried out with the samples placed between recrystal-lized alumina plates, but some experiments were performed with the samples suspended so that their surfaces were not in contact with anything except hydrogen, and these were equally successful in developing secondary crystals. An approximate determination of the proportion of material (before secondary recrystallization took place) having crystals with the (100) or (110) planes in or near the rolling plane showed that 11 pct of the sample had (100) and 16 pct (110). The method used for the determination is described below. A sample was annealed at a temperature just below the secondary recrystallization temperature and etched to reveal the (100) planes. The approximate area covered by crystals having (100) or (110) in or very near the surface was measured on the screen of a Vickers projection microscope. This was repeated for twenty positions chosen at random and a mean of the results calculated. The main hindrance to developing the secondary crystals in the thicker materials was the difficulty of obtaining a large enough initial primary grain size before secondary recrystallization. This was overcome by increasing the particle size of the silicon powder used. During the course of the work, it had been observed that the larger the grain size after sintering the more likely it was that the material would be successful in developing secondary crystals at a later stage. An experiment was therefore carried out to determine whether the material with the larger grain was more successful in developing secondary crystals due to the large grain produced at the sintering state per se or whether it was due to the greater reduction of silica brought about when the sintering temperature was raised in order to increase the grain size. A comparison was made between two compacts, one of which was made with silicon powder of 60 to 100 mesh, the other with silicon powder which was finer than 200 mesh. F?r this experiment, use was made of a phenomenon previously observed that the larger the particle size of the silicon powder employed in making a compact, the larger is the grain size of the compact. The tensile behavior of bcc ordered P&apos; AuZn single crystals (CsCl structure) has been investigated under varying conditions of temperature, composition, and orientation. Between -0.2 and 0.4 T, multi-stage hardening occurs fm stoichiometric and nonstoichio-metric crystals oriented near the middle of the primary stereographic triangle. At higher and lower temperatures, parabolic type hardening occurs, followed by work - softening at the higher temperatwes. Deviations from stoichiometry give rise to increased flow stresses. Multi-stage hardening was observed for most orientations, except along the [loll-[lll] boundary and near the [001] corner of the stereo -graphic triangle, where parabolic type hardening occurs. Along two slip systems, (hk0)[001] and (, operate simultaneously while in the [001] comer, slip occurs mainly on the system. Electron microscopy of deformed crystals revealed bundles of edge dislocations forming walls approximately Perpendicular to the glide plane. In general the plasticity of 4&apos; AuZn closely resembles the plasticity of bcc crystals. In recent years, considerable interest has arisen concerning the mechanical properties of the CsCl type intermetallic compounds Ag Mg,&apos;- Fe co,&apos; and Ni Al.&apos;-&apos; The compound P&apos;AuZn is structurally similar. It has a low and congruent melting point of 725"~,&apos;" remains ordered up to the melting point,16 and pos-esses a range of solid solubility from 47.5 to 52.0 at. pct Au at room temperature.15 The present paper reports the results of an investigation on the general tensile behavior of material in single crystal form. Some dislocation configurations characteristic of the deformed state are also reported. The results of a detailed study of the slip geometry in AuZn are presented in a separate paper.17 PROCEDURE Alloy preparation, crystal growing techniques, and the procedure followed in selecting specimens of minimum composition variation are reported elsewhere.17 Dumb-bell shaped tensile specimens were prepared by carefully machining single crystals in a jewellers&apos; lathe to a gage length of 0.80 in. and diam of 0.090 in. Back-reflection Laue X-ray patterns and room temperature tensile tests revealed that machining damage could be eliminated by electrochemically polishing 0.005 in. from the machined surface followed by annealing at 300°C for 1 hr. Specimens were polished in fresh 5 pct KCN solution (40°C, 12 v). Experiments were performed by gripping specimens in a self-aligning pin-chuck and threaded collet system, then straining in a floor model Instron tensile machine. All tests were performed in duplicate. Experimental variables included temperature, composition, and orientation. Unless otherwise stated the strain rate was 2.5 x 10"3 per sec. Liquid testing environments included nitrogen (WOK), nitrogen cooled petroleum ether (133" to 293"K), and silicone oil (293" to 488°K). Resolved shear stress-shear strain curves were electronically computed from autographically recorded load-elongation curves. Stress and strain were resolved on the macroscopic noncrystallographic (hkO) [001] system operative under the specific test conditions of temperature, strain rate, and orientation reported earlier.17 RESULTS The temperature dependence of the work-hardening curves is shown in Fig. 1 for gold-rich crystals of 51.0 at. pct Au oriented near the center of the stereo-graphic triangle. Over the range of intermediate temperatures from -200" to 400°K, they are very similar to those classically observed for fcc metals (reviewed by Nabarro et al.).&apos;&apos; The beginning of deformation is characterized by a region of decreasing hardening rate, stage 0, which is followed by a region of low linear hardening, stage I, and then a region of higher linear hardening, stage 11. At the higher temperatures, stage 111 is observed, a region of decreasing hardening rate. Over the intermediate temperature range, the extent of stage 0 and of the slow transition between stages I and I1 decreases with increasing temperature. Total ductility is large, often greater than 300 pct shear. As the temperature is either increased or decreased, the extent of stage I is decreased, giving rise to parabolic type flow and reduced ductility. Similar temperature effects have been reported for bcc ~r~stals.~~-~~ Below -14O°K, hardening is terminated in brittle fracture while above -400°K. initial hardening is followed first by work-softening and then by chisel-edge type ductile fracture. Stoichiometric (50.0 at. pct Au) and Zn-rich (51.0 at. pct Zn) crystals were also tested from 77" to -500°K. The effect of composition on the flow behavior is illus-

Photogrammetrists are studying with new interest the problems of mine mapping and mining engineers are beginning to see what photogrammetry can do for them. Administrators in a number of European and U. S. mines have tried photogram- metric methods and are finding that better maps and data, needed for mine development, can be produced with savings of time, men, and money. In addition to wide use in small scale mapping projects, photogrammetric methods are now used for producing large scale plans and maps in German coal and lignite mines, in some U. S. open pit mines, to inventory TVA coal stock piles, and to compute highway excavation volumes. In each case surveying and map compilation has been made more efficient and accurate by photogrammetry and at significant savings over ground methods.

THE purpose of this paper is to present a method of designing safe and economical arch structures that are to be constructed of concrete or directly of original earth materials. The experimental data used to illustrate the design method are taken from Bucky and Fentress,1,2 and the application of the ideas presented by them is extended by obtaining an additional set of curves from which arch structures may be designed. This design method is based upon the following principles of similitude: A scalar model made of the same material as that of the full sized structure will behave similarly to its prototype if the density of the model is increased in the same proportion as its linear scale is decreased. Let R represent the scale or model ratio, namely, the ratio of a prototype linear dimension to the corresponding model linear dimension. The effect of increased density may be obtained by rotating the model in a centrifuge at a speed such that the centrifugal field exerts on the model an accelerative force R times the accelerative force of gravity. Under these conditions; (I) model unit stresses are equal to corresponding prototype unit stresses, (2) the ratio of the prototype deformation at a given point to the model deformation at a similar point is equal to the scale ratio, R, and (3) the model and the prototype will behave similarly within and beyond the elastic limits of strain. According to the above relations, such models can be used to solve the following problems: I. The dimensions of the most economical safe arch structure for a given load. 2. The maximum safe roof span underground for given geologic conditions. The procedure is described briefly as follows. Tests are made by rotating in a centrifuge a number of models that repIesent a variety of prototype loads and dimensions. From the experimental data, curves are plotted to show the relations between these loads and dimensions. The curves are used to solve directly the problems stated above. Structural design is based upon the working (safe) stress of the material of construction, which is established by applying a factor of safety to the experimentally determined ultimate strength of the material. In conformity with this principle, each model is gradually loaded until failure occurs. A safety factor is then applied to the results. If a safety factor of 4 is used, a given model at failure represents a safe prototype, the linear dimensions of which are equal to one-fourth the model ratio at failure times the corresponding model dimensions. A formulation is given for radiant heat loss from the surface of molten steel held in a ladle and numerical solutions are presented for the resultant integrodif-ferential equations. The results are shown on plots of the net rate of heat loss against time, with the geometlry, emissivities, thermal properties of the walls, and Preheat as parameters. It was found that the rate of the vadiant heat loss from the exposed metal surface was comparable to the conductive losses from the Portion of the metal in direct contact with the walls. The radiant heat loss was markedly affected by the geometry and by the thermal properties of the walls the net radiant heat loss from the steel could be drastically reduced by providing a top cover and also by the provision of preheat. The results of this work are thought to be relevant to heat loss calculatious concerned with vacuum degassing and with operatzons in which molten metals are held in ladles. WhEN molten steel is held or transferred in ladles heat losses inevitably occur. The accurate assessment of these heat losses is of importance in process design considerations, as the temperature of the metal may have to meet rigid specifications in certain stages of the processing sequence. As shown in Fig. 1, the principal mechanisms responsible for heat loss are: i) Conduction into the walls and ii) Thermal radation from the top metal surface (possibly augmented by natural convection) The conductive heat loss may be readily calculated as much information is available in the literature on both the general theory1&apos;&apos; and on its particular applications to ladle heat loss calculations. Evaluation of the radiant component of the heat loss is less straight-forward. In two recent papers it has been shown that the presence of a slag layer 2 to 3 in. thick would prevent any significant heat loss for periods up to an hour,5&apos;" however, should bare metal be exposed, constituting the radiant surface, substantial heat losses could occur. This latter case is of considerable practical interest in various degassing operations and in the vacuum processing of certain specialty steels, where the top surface of the metal is not covered by a protective slag layer. Under these conditions a substantial radiant flux is emitted by the top metal surface; part of this flux leaves the system, part of it falls in the ladle walls. The radiant flux incident on the ladle walls is in part absorbed and conducted away, and in part reflected and re radiated. The purpose of the paper is to present a general formulation of the problem, the resultant solution of which should enable computation of the net radiant heat loss from the metal surface. The principal variables, the effect of which will be investigated, include initial metal temperature, geometry, thermal and radiative properties of the wall, and various modes of preheat. FORMULATION Consider a cylindrical enclosure, shown in Fig. 2, with a diameter D, height H, and wall thickness W, the cover at the top of the cylinder having a wall thickness L. If the temperature of the base (representing the top surface of the metal) is kept constant, say, Tb, the problem is to calculate the net rate of heat loss from the base as a function of time, geometry, the initial temperature distribution, and the thermal properties of the system. As customary, the formulation will consist of the mathematical statement of the conservation of thermal energy within the system.

In the course of a study of the electronic and thermodynamic properties of Pb-Se alloys it was found necessary to have an accurate knowledge of the phase diagram. However, the literature is in disagreement as to whether or not a monotectic reaction occurs in the lead rich portion of the phase diagram. Pelabonl reported only a two-phase region consisting of lead-rich liquid and solid PbSe extending from almost pure lead to the compound PbSe, and gave the melting point of PbSe as 1065°C. The data of Friedrich and Leroux2 are in general agreement with this type of diagram, with the melting point of the compound being 1088°C. However, Nozato and Igaki by inverse rate thermal analysis observed a monotectic reaction isotherm exlacing at 860°C with a monotectic composition of 20.5 at. pct Se. The miscibility gap in the liquid state extends from 7.5 to 20.5 at. pct Se. Hansen and Anderko4 accepted Nozato and Igaki&apos;s phase diagram in the region of the lead-rich monotectic. To reinvestigate this portion of the phase diagram, both thermal analysis and metallographic examination of various compositions were performed. The thermal analysis apparatus was constructed according to the specifications of the National Bureau of Standards. A t/t-l pct Rh thermocouple was calibrated against the melting point of copper (NBS), zinc (NBS), and antimony (A. D. Mackay), the emf being measured with a Rubicon Type B potentiometer sensitive to lpv. The absolute accuracy of the thermal analysis obtainable with this system is ± 0.5oC. Starting materials were semiconductor grade lead and selenium purchased from the American Smelting and Refining Co. Both elements were 99.999 pct pure with only trace impurities detected upon spectroscopic examination. One hundred galloys were sealed in quartz crucibles with a central thermocouple well under a vacuum of less than 1 p. This procedure prevented any composition change due to vaporization during the run. Cooling curves were obtained on the alloys listed in Table I. Data was taken by the direct method at cooling rates ranging between 1/2 to 2°C per min. The alloys were heated well above the liquidus and shaken vigorously to insure homogeneity. No evidence of an arrest indicative of the monotectic reaction was observed, and the two-phase region reported by Pelabonl and Friedrich and Leroux? was confirmed in general, although our data give higher liquidus temperatures than Friedrich and Leroux. The melting point of stoichiomet-ric PbSe determined for two different samples was 1080.7 0.5oC. The results of this investigation are compared with Nozato and Igaki&apos;s data in Fig. 1. To Complement the thermal analysis data, an 86 at. pct Pb specimen was examined microscopically. This composition was in the center of the miscibility gap reported by Nozato and Igaki.3 The alloy was heated to 1000°C, held for 1/2 hr, and water quenched. The specimen was polished using standard metallographic techniques for lead. The alloy was etched with an acetic-nitric acid etchant for 10 min at 45°C. Microscopic examination did not indicate the existence of two separate layers or solidified droplets imbedded in a matrix, as would be expected if a miscibility gap were present. The mi-crostructure shown in Fig. 2 consists of uniformly dispersed, dendritic PbSe in a lead-rich matrix.

FROM the primary gyratory crushing plant, described in MacLeod&apos;s article, ore is delivered to a large storage or surge bin from which it is carried by two transverse conveyors to the secondary crushing plant. The bin has a useful drawoff of about 13,000 tons, this being slightly over one half of the initial daily capacity of the Morenci Reduction Works. This arrangement provides sufficient storage to permit intermittent operation of the primary and secondary crushing plants without too close a coordination between the two.

The ore bodies of the Butte district1 are found in many different vein systems having many different structural characteristics; some are narrow with self-supporting ore but with weak walls; some are wide with weak or strong ore and weak walls; some of the veins dip steeply and others do not; some have well defined walls, and others, in the "horsetail" area, are mined to sample limits. Consequently, many types of stoping methods are used in mining these ores. The stoping methods used in the Anaconda Copper Mining Company&apos;s properties are the square-set and cut-and-fill. The square-set method is the principal stoping method used because, generally speaking, the ore and walls are weak, the ore is high grade, and good extraction is required. These square-set stopes may be classified as conventional, vertical slice, slot, timber rill, and Mitchell slice types. The conventional type square sets are those of various shapes and sizes, mined by horizontal slicing to the boundaries of the stopes. The rock is slid to the chute and the filling is moved by gravity. The ore and waste may be handled with a scraper when local conditions require it. The vertical-slice square-set system is the type used in narrow veins that are mined in vertical panels. The slot stopes are stopes in wide veins that employ a slot across the vein instead of a con- ventional chute to handle the ore. The timber rill is a type of square set in which the ore is mined as in inclined cut and fill but the square-set timber is used. The Mitchell slice is the type used for some broken or heavy ore blocks, or for pillar extraction between two converging slot stopes. The cut-and-fill method is used where the ore will stand without much support although the walls may be weak. The principal type of this method is the horizontal cut-and-fill, with mechanical scraping. The inclined cut-and-fill, or rill, stopes are used in some veins too narrow for scraping. The production from the various methods in use for the second six months of 1944 are shown in Table I. This paper deals mainly with the vertical slice and slot types of square-set stoping, because of their effect on production locally and their potential possibilities here and in other districts, with sufficient reference to conventional square-setting for comparison.
