Cyanidation tailings which are disposed in a surface impoundment experience a loss of cyanide due to natural degradation, frequently reducing the cyanide concentration to very low levels. Quantifying cyanide losses in terms of pond geometry, local weather conditions and feed solution chemistry has been largely empirical though in many cases mining operations rely on surface impoundments to reduce cyanide to below an internally regulated concentration or an effluent limitation. To permit a more quantitative evaluation of cyanide losses in an impoundment, a computer simulation was developed to estimate the losses of free, WAD and total cyanide due to dissociation, photolysis and volatilization. Results of the model are compared against data collected for a North American tailings impoundment during 1998.

The application of cutoffs during and after pit optimization is examined for a lower-grade multi-metallic copper deposit. Pit optimization requires calculation of the net revenue associated with each mining block, incorporating parameters such as metal prices, grades and expected recoveries, mining and processing costs, smelting and refining charges, and penalty element and royalty charges. Sensitivity analysis during pit optimization reveals which of these parameters have a significant effect on the total contained resource tonnage and total contained non-discounted revenue in the optimized pit. The cumulative effect of changing several of the more significant parameters is investigated. Application of a copper cutoff grade to a block inside the optimized pit could result in the less than optimal extraction of the resource. A block with copper grade below the applied cutoff could be economic due to the presence of other metals. Conversely, a higher copper grade block may be sub-economic. The relative merits of applying a copper grade cutoff, "equivalent grade" cutoff and dollar value per ton cutoff to blocks inside the optimum pit are discussed.

The responses of calcite, feldspar, and quartz minerals In a laboratory free fall electrostatic separator, before and after tribocharging with stainless steel, PVC, and copper plates, have been investigated. The effect of H3BO3 and BaCl2 chemicals pre-treatment on the electrical properties of the minerals is examined. The changes in the electrical properties are discussed with the determined charge, dielectric constant, and electrical conductivity of the mineral samples. Electrical properties of the minerals and their responses to the electrical field during separation, after tribocharging and chemical pre-treatment, are explored for the need to characterize the electrical behaviour of the minerals.

"In current tunneling practice, finite element simulations have become an integral element of the planning and design process. These models are most often manually generated using 2D CAD drawings, which is a laborious and time consuming process. In this paper, we propose a BIM based approach, in which the 3D FE-model is automatically generated through a set of compatible geometries of individual components, i.e. the geology, alignment, lining and the TBM. The BIM model also includes all relevant model parameters of the tunneling project that can then be incorporated into subsequent analysis to be performed during the tunnel drive. The setup and the execution of the FE-analysis are performed automatically utilizing all required data from BIM. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed strategies is demonstrated by means of project data from the Wehrhahn-line metro project in Düsseldorf, Germany. Both the design as well as the construction stage is considered. INTRODUCTIONIt is recommend to employ Finite Element (FE) simulations in order to ensure a high degree of safety and quality for any given project (Guglielmetti et al. 2012). As such, FE models form an integral part in the design and planning stages of modern tunneling projects. These models are often time consuming to construct and require data from many different sources. This data is most often not centrally stored and therefore not easily accessible. Additionally, the formats in which project data are stored are typically not compatible with the formats required by an FE program. This is especially true in the case of geometrical data, such as CAD drawings. Although existing design drawings are most often used as the basis for a FE model, a direct import into a FE program is most often not successful as the imported data generates a geometry that does not fulfill the requirements of a FEM model, such as model connectivity. Even if a geometry is successfully imported, other necessary aspects of an FE model, such as boundary conditions and material properties, must be applied manually. These incompatibilities inevitably result in the creation of a new model, which, especially in the case of complex 3D models, is a time consuming process."

As an advanced method of rock engineering construction safety monitoring, microseismic monitoring technology can monitor the micro-fracture of rock masses within an effective range, and then perform forecast analysis of rockburst, cracking, falling blocks and other disasters. Although the application of microseismic monitoring technology has become more mature, how to improve its application efficiency remains to be further studied. At present, artificial intelligence has been extensively developed, and the use of intelligent algorithms to improve the efficiency of rockburst forecast can provide a valuable reference for the safe construction of underground engineering. To this end, this paper proposes a microseismic multi-parameter rockburst early warning model based on dynamic Bayesian networks. First, the sensitivity of microseismic source parameters to rockburst forecast is analyzed based on microseismic monitoring data and actual rockburst information of a hydropower station. Second, the main seismic source parameters and their data are selected and imported into a dynamic Bayesian network for learning to obtain the rockburst forecast model. The model is confirmed in its self-validation and K times cross-validation, and the receiver operating characteristic curve of the model is also analyzed, it is found that the area under the curve is close to 1, indicating that the model has good accuracy. Finally, the analysis of the influence strength of the parent and child nodes in the model reveals that the moment magnitude and source scale are the most sensitive parameters, which can be used as an important reference for rockburst forecast.

So that you will not have been misled entirely we will devote our considerations to a far more important art and if I may, I should like to begin by quoting Vincent Van Gogh. According to a literal translation the artist in describing one of his famous paintings said "these peasants are eating their potatoes with those very hands that dug them from the earth' and put them in the dish". Vincent Van Gogh may not have realized at that time, that he could likewise have been describing what is probably one of the oldest of all arts - the art of Material Handling - an art that man with the aid of science has tried to improve since the beginning of time.

The United States is being invaded... by foreign capital: marks, francs, pounds, yen, lire, riyals, you name it: On almost any given day the Wall Street Journal will contain a new report on a department store, newspaper, bank, hotel, agricultural land, supermarket chain, et a1 being bought into by overseas investment. Xenophobic reaction to this revised national condition has begun to set in. Several farming states have and are introducing legislation to monitor foreign land buying. In Congress a mandatory reporting requirement for foreign purchasing is currently under study. In a relatively short period the country has reverted from world leader- ship in overseas acquisition and involvement to become itself one of the prime investment opportunities in existence. Interestingly enough, one of the industries where this changed status has become most apparent and pronounced is within that small/regional/segmented/low value-to-weight bulk commodity enterprise ranked as the backbone of the nation's construction activity. U.S. cement making is not only undergoing internationalization in its ownership, but also in its product, equipment, and engineering expertise.

Based on the mechanical essence that large-scale plastic failure zone appears in all or part of surrounding rock in soft rock roadway, the numerical simulation method is used to study the rectangular roadway in layered rock strata. It is clarified necessary conditions must be met for soft rock: firstly, the strength condition is that the maximum confining pressure is greater than the uniaxial compressive strength of rock strata. Secondly, the stress environment condition is that the ratio of maximum confining pressure to minimum confining pressure is greater than 3. Thirdly, the angle condition is that The direction of principal stress action enables the plastic zone of weak rock layers to fully develop. At the same time, the quantitative description method of soft rock is given, and the soft rock roadway is redefined. Soft rock roadway refers to the roadway that meets the strength conditions, stress environment conditions, and rock structure angle conditions under certain surrounding rock conditions and in-situ stress environment conditions. After the excavation of the roadway, a large-scale plastic failure can be formed, that is, a butterfly-shaped plastic zone is formed, and the conventional support cannot be adapted. It is difficult to support in engineering. It provides a theoretical basis and engineering analysis method for the identification of soft rock roadway, and the research results have engineering value Soft rock tunnel engineering in coal mines constitutes a vital aspect of soft rock engineering. This field broadly encompasses rock engi- neering concerning large plastic deformations, e.g., soft rock slope engineering and soft rock tunnel engineering. The intricate geological conditions encountered in soft rock tunnel engineering present a significant challenge to support, which has harmed coal production in China. China leads global raw coal production with the annual output of 4.6 billion tons. Annual tunnel excavation supporting this production spans approximately 11,000 km, with over 10% of these tunnels classified as soft rock formations. Soft rock is commonly associated with soft rock tunnels due to their prevalence in engineering projects. However, reaching a consensus on the definition of soft rock has long been an enduring challenge for scholars and engineers. Numerous definitions have been proposed, includ- ing descriptive, index, and engineering definitions. For instance, the International Society for Rock Mechanics defines soft rock based on its uniaxial compressive strength σ ranging from 0.5 to 25 MPa. China's Engineering Rock Body Standards, established in 1994 (GB 50218-94), take a qualitative and quantitative approach to classifying rocks. Rocks are categorized as hard or soft based on criteria such as hammering sound, fragmentation, water immersion effects, and weath- ering degree. Additionally, the integrity of rock bodies is assessed across five categories intact, relatively intact, soft fractured, fractured, and extremely fractured. This classification considers factors like the number and spacing of structural planes, their combination, and the types of structures. Descriptive and index-based definitions fall under the category of geological soft rocks, providing a comprehensive geological perspective on the surface features or strength characteristics. However, these definitions have limitations in engineering practice, which leads to contradic- tions. For instance, rocks with uniaxial compressive strength less than 25 MPa may not exhibit soft rock characteristics if the tunnel is shal- low with low horizontal stress levels. Conversely, rocks with compressive strength exceeding 25 MPa at sufficient depth and high horizontal stress may exhibit soft rock characteristics. Definitions originating from engineering practice have emerged after realizing the inadequacy of discussing soft rocks without considering engineering. For instance, Dong's loose circle theory defines soft rocks as rocks with a loose circle thickness exceeding 1.5 m, which chal- lenges conventional supports. This intuitive definition, widely accepted by engineering professionals, emphasizes the difficulty in supporting tunnels due to extensive damage. However, various tunnel damage poses a challenge in relying solely on the loose circle thickness of tunnels for determining soft rocks. He introduced the concept of engineering soft rocks, which are defined as rock formations exhibiting significant plastic deformations under applied engineering force. Two fundamental mechanical properties of soft rocks are identified the critical softening load and critical soft- ening depth. "Most engineers are bright, hard-working, reliable, and prefer to avoid conflict. An engineering curriculum tends to self-select these characteristics. By most standards, you would expect workers exhibiting these traits to require minimal supervision. But is this true? Is this how most current engineering managers lead? Looking at some current theories on leadership combined with personal anecdotes, this presentation will look at some common misconceptions about leading engineers. INTRODUCTION Engineers are different. There, I said it. From cartoons to movies to television shows and more, there is a reason stereotypes of engineers resonate. Yes, you can find a lot individual variation among specific engineers that you may know, but they do not detract from some of the overarching commonalities that engineers are known for. CLASH OF CULTURES What distinguishes a professional? Raelin (1985), in his book Clash of Cultures, describes professionals as having superior intellectual training, maintaining their own standards of excellence, and being supported by associations that maintain the quality of the profession. Engineers obviously fit all three of these ideas: an engineering degree is still regarded as one of the most difficult to attain; we maintain our own standards both through peer-review and in academia through ABET accreditation; and through professional associations like SME to promote the discipline and foster technical growth. Six characteristics representing professional status are described by Raelin (1985, p. 9): Expertise—prolonged specialized training in a body of abstract knowledge. Autonomy—the freedom to choose the means to solving a problem. Commitment—Primary interest is in pursuing the practice of one’s own chosen specialty. Identification—identifying with the profession and with fellow professionals, both through formal associations and through peers external to the organization. Ethics—providing service without concern for oneself or without becoming emotionally involved with the client. Standards—committed to help in policing the conduct of fellow professionals. Engineers are smart—in the vast majority of cases they are hired specifically for their expertise. At a typical mine the ventilation engineer knows more about mine ventilation than anyone else on site; the same is true for the rock mechanics engineer, the explosives engineer, the planning engineer who uses sophisticated computer software—each is the expert for their particular area at the mine, that is why they have that responsibility. This can present a dilemma for the manager for each (sometimes all) of these engineers. The manager needs to keep everyone on task and focused on the objectives of the organization. Because they have reached their position by following the norms and expectations of the organization, managers tend to have a certain amount of loyalty to that organization. Engineers, on the other hand, tend to have mixed loyalties, having as much loyalty and affinity for their profession as they do for the particular company they happen to be working for at any given time. This dynamic can often lead to power struggles between the managers, based on their positional authority in the organization, and the engineers, based on their specialized knowledge (Camm, 2013)."

"The deposits of the east end of the Mesabi Range cover very large areas, and consist of the same taconite that produces the hematite of the central and western Mesabi. It is not deeply covered with drift, but outcrops boldly in large masses. It is not concentrated locally into enriched bodies separated by leaner areas, but is all a fairly uniform, hard, banded, unaltered chert, carrying about 25 to 30 per cent iron as magnetite.The Mesabi Iron Company, organized by Hayden, Stone & Co., and under the direction of D. C. Jackling, has taken over these deposits and is building a Concentrating plant at the new town of Babbitt, about fourteen miles east of Mesaba, Minn. This plant is to have a capacity of 2,000 to 3,000 tons per day, and is based on the application to this low grade material of the methods which have made the so-called porphyry copper properties so successful.In 1916, an experimental mill was built in Duluth; containing full sized machinery and capable of handling from 100 to 200 tons daily. A considerable tonnage of material was concentrated here during 1916, 1917 and 1918. The work showed that the resulting product could be varied, almost at will, between 60 per cent and 70 per cent iron and .006 per cent to .030 per' cent phosphorus, and that this could be made on a large scale well within the limits of cost set by iron trade conditions. A small special cargo was sent down the lakes, late in 1918, assaying 63.27 per cent iron (natural and dry) and .008 per cent phosphorus; but it is assumed that large scale shipments will normally be of a Bessemer' grade carrying about 63 per cent iron and .020 per cent to .030 per cent phosphorus. This material is a sinter, carrying only traces of sulphur and titanium, with silica between 6 per cent and 10 , per cent, and alumina, lime, magnesia, and manganese, each below 1 per cent. Some of the iron in this sinter is hematite and some is magnetite, the percentages varying according to the treatment given on the sintering machine. Like the analyses, this hematite percentage is within reasonable control. Sinter made from finely ground magnetite has much the structure of coke, being firm yet porous, and gives good account of itself in the blast furnace."

In Roman and earlier civilizations the term cement was applied only to mixtures of lime, pozzolana, sand, water, etc., used as a mortar to bind larger stones. Today, portland cement, the subject of this section, can be briefly defined as follows: The product obtained by finely grinding clinker produced by calcining to incipient fusion (i.e., sintering) an intimate and properly proportioned mixture of argillaceous and calcareous materials. History The Egyptians were probably the first to join building stones with a mixture of sand and a cementitious material (i.e., having the property of or acting like cement). It is generally accepted that the cement used by the Egyptians on such structures as the Great Pyramid was calcined gypsum, Later the Greeks began to calcine limestone for use as a mortar with sand and water. Still later, broken brick and tile were added to the mortar to make the first concrete. The Greeks and Romans found that some sands produced mortars that were especially resistant to the action of water. Hydraulic (i.e., underwater-hardening) cements formed by combining slaked lime, water, and finely divided siliceous materials (e.g., pozzolana) possess superior strength and are capable of resisting the destructive action of water. They were used on the Pantheon, Colosseum, and other structures, some of which are still standing. In 1756 an English engineer, John Smeaton, found that an argillaceous limestone (i.e., containing an appreciable amount of clay as an impurity) produced a cement with greater resistance to the action of water. Despite Smeaton's findings, the use of the old mixture of lime and pozzolana long retained its popularity. Significant contributions in cement technology from England, Swe¬den, France, and Holland were made in the next 68 years. However, the invention of portland cement is generally credited to Joseph Aspdin, an Englishman, who in 1824 patented "portland cement." The name was selected because, on hardening, it resembled the natural building stone from the Isle of Portland, England. The patent features mixing ground limestone and argillaceous materials in appropriate proportions and calcining (i.e., expelling CO2 by roasting) the mixture. This superseded the existing practice of calcining naturally occurring argillaceous limestone. In about 1845 Isaac Johnson, also English, conducted experiments on proportioning the components and calcining them at higher tem¬peratures. His accomplishments are accepted as the beginning of the present-day portland cement industry. The U.S. cement industry originated with the demand for good hydraulic cement for building structures such as the Erie Canal, which was started in 1817. The first discovery of cement rock (i.e., naturally occurring argillaceous limestone with near-optimum ratios of calcium carbonate, alumina, and silica) near Fayetteville, N.Y., was made by C. White. In 1818, White secured a patent for the manufacture of natural cement from that deposit. Subsequently, several natural cement plants were built in 1830-1840 at Rosendale, N.Y., and in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. David Saylor, who participated in establishing a natural cement plant at Coplay, Pa., in 1850 discovered that a superior cement could be produced by calcining the rock at higher temperatures than hith¬erto. In 1871, Saylor obtained a patent and commenced the manufac¬ture of portland cement. By 1890, there were 17 portland cement plants in the United States with a combined annual output of 62,300 tons. At the end of 1970, the number of plants producing portland cement in the United States (including Puerto Rico) was 169, down from a maximum of 185 in 1967, with total annual shipments of 73.4 million tons valued at $1,298 million. (Fig. 1). In 1970, annual world production of hydraulic cement (which includes pozzolanic materials, hydraulic limes, natural cement, alumina cement, and portland cement, all of which are in current use in various parts of the world) reached 630 million tons (Table 1). Flowsheets of typical U.S. cement plants are shown in Chapter 13. Introduction Soda ash is known chemically as sodium carbonate, an important inorganic chemical. It has been produced for several centuries by processing certain vegetation and minerals. The US soda ash industry has evolved from several small sodium carbonate mining operations in the West. Now, a nucleus of six companies produce about one-fourth of the world's annual soda ash output US producers currently dominate the world market. But certain international events are occurring that will reshape the domestic soda ash industry in the next decade. Historical perspective Soda ash is used mainly in the manufacture of glass, soap, dyes and pigments, textiles, and other chemical preparations. All of these are the first basic consumer products produced by developing societies. About 3500 BC, the Egyptians became the first society to use crude soda ash. The soda ash was used to make glass containers. It was most likely obtained from dried mineral incrustations around alkaline lakes. Soda deposits were virtually nonexistent in western Europe. So people resorted to burning seaweed to obtain the ashes. The ashes were then leached with hot water and the solute was recovered after evaporating the solution to dryness. The solute, a crude "soda ash" was impure. But, it could be used to make glass and soap. These two products and industries were important to the population and economic growth of the region. About 11.5 t (13 st) of seaweed ash was required to produce about 0.9 t (1 st) of soda ash. Along the coasts of England, France, and Spain, seaweeds with varying alkali contents became important items of commerce and sources of soda ash before the 18th century. The LeBlanc process used salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. It became the major method of production from about 1823 to 1885. In the early 1860s, Ernest and Alfred Solvay, two Belgian brothers, successfully commercialized an ammonia-soda process to synthesize soda ash. It used salt, coke, limestone, and ammonia. The Solvay process produced a better quality product than the LeBlanc method. In 1879, Oswald J. Heinrich presented to the Baltimore meeting of AIME, a paper entitled "The manufacture of soda by the ammonia process." The paper compared the two processes and foretold the demise of the LeBlanc technique. World production of soda ash in 1880 was 680 kt (750,000 st). Of that, 544 kt (600,000 st) was produced by the LeBlanc process. Of the 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st) of soda ash produced worldwide in 1913, only about 50 kt (55,000 st) was by the LeBlanc method. The LeBlanc process was never used successfully in the US, except for a brief period from July 1884 to January 1885 in Laramie, WY. Previously, soda ash had been produced by burning certain plants, as exemplified by the early Jamestown colonists, or by recovering small quantities of natural sodium carbonate found in alkaline lakes, such as those found near Fallon, NV, and Independence Rock, WY. Before the 1884 startup of the first synthetic soda ash plant in the US at Syracuse, NY, most of the domestic soda ash demand in the East was met by imports, primarily from England. Large-scale commercial production of natural soda ash began in California in 1887 from surface crystalline material at Owens Lake. Production from sodium carbonate-bearing brines at Searles Lake began in 1927 (Fig. 1). In 1938, during exploration for oil and gas in southwestern Wyoming, a massive buried trona deposit, presumably the world's largest, was accidentally discovered. Recent mineral resource evaluation by the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines indicates that the Wyoming trona deposit contains 86 Gt (93 billion st) of identified trona resource in beds 1.2 m (4 ft) thick or greater. Additionally, there is about 61 Gt (67 billion st) of reserve base trona. Of this 36 Gt (40 billion st) is in halite-free trona beds and 24 Gt (27 billion st) is in mixed trona and halite beds. In 1953, the Food Machinery and Chemical Corp. (later shortened to FMC Corp.) became the first company to mine trona in Wyoming. Soda ash demand increased.

INTRODUCTION TO COAL MINE PRACTICES To illustrate the trends and the proportions of the various methods used to mine coal underground, Fig. 1 is useful. However, of all the underground coal mining practices in the US, room-and-pillar mining still accounts for 96.5%. This percentage is divided as follows: conventional, machine cut-33.0%; conventional, hand cut -1.7% : and continuous mining-61 .8%. As was stated in Sec. 1, Chap. 7, the term "development" means different things to a coal miner and a metal miner. Though some of the ideas and concepts presented in the first two chapters of this section are valid for all types of mines, they apply particularly to mines using noncoal methods. In coal mines (and many other mines using coal mining systems) development refers to that phase of the mining cycle which advances several entries through the virgin seam, forming pillars by cross- cutting between the parallel entries. Because in the past, coal seams (as well as seams of potash, trona, oil shales, gilsonite, salt, and some uranium) have been much more uniform in their thickness, continuity, and quality, and because they often cover large areas, it has been possible to develop the room-and-pillar mine completely from a preplanned, systematic approach with a minimum of surface drilling information. As the better coal seams of the midwest and east are being depleted (or eliminated because of high sulfur), seams of poor quality and continuity will have to be mined. Also, seams that are not nearly so well known at greater depth will have to be taken as well as some of the steeply pitching and folded seams of the west. The American coal miner is only now feeling the need to do a much more complete job of prospecting the geology of the coal seams than he has ever done before. This is the only way that the risk of unknown rock conditions can be minimized. In many ways, surprises in the rock or coal seams are much more of a disaster to the coal miner developing a room-and- pillar mine than to his metal mining counterpart. Be- cause of the multiple entries, the complex set of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety regulations, and the totally dedicated design of coal mining equipment, coal mining systems do not have the flexibility to easily overcome changes in the seams mined or the rocks around them. Thus, if a wide parting of rock shows up unexpectedly in the middle of a coal seam entry being milled away by a continuous miner, it will either have to slowly "chew" through it, convert to a conventional mining system, or stop that particular entry. Likewise, if suddenly the coal disappears completely and in its place are the remains of an old creek bed, the "want" or "wash out" as it's called will usually have to be mined right along with the coal, by the same methods and with the same soft rock equipment, or the entry will have to be abandoned. For reasons such as these, coal seams today should be drilled from the surface just as thoroughly as the ore bodies in metal mines. Having once determined a more precise location of where the coal seams are located and which are suitable for mining, the engineer must still take a systematic approach to planning the mine as completely as possible. The initial series of entries must be planned to be driven either from the side hill portal or from the bottom of the shaft or slope. In either case, they should usually intersect the area close to the midpoint of the mass to be mined.

Introduction Over the last five years, a large number of small- to medium-sized carbon-in-pulp treatment plants have been built in Australia, most designed to treat between 250,000 t/a and 1.5 Mt/a of ore. Because of the limited capital resources and tight cash-flow positions of these relatively small mining companies, the primary requirement was often to get a plant built and operating in a short period of time and at minimal capital cost. Therefore, since the inclusion of both pre-leach and tailings thickeners represents an obvious and significant capital cost, most of these plants were built without thickeners or even detailed, cost-benefit analyses on their inclusion. In some cases, the increasing use of High Rate Thickeners (HRTs) in the mineral processing industries has, however, resulted in a reassessment, because of their considerably lower cost. This reassessment was triggered primarily by the need to conserve water in arid mining areas where borefields are costly to install and water is limited. With the startup and operation of these installations, the resulting significant savings in cyanide consumption has been recognized, in many situations, as a primary justification for the installation of HRTs. Solution balances Degradation of cyanide occurs in the tailings water discharge to slime dams. The degree of degradation (cyanide loss) in the water recovered depends on a number of factors, but it is usually assumed to be about 90%. The most important mechanisms of CN loss are through HCN losses and oxidation by oxygen in the air, which also assists in the hydrolysis of CN. These mechanisms are supported by the large dam surface area and the long retention time of the tailings water in the dam. By thickening the CIP tailings at the plant and recovering as much tailings water as immediately possible, these losses are avoided. The retention time in an HRT is less than three hours, and the surface area is relatively small. Therefore, CN losses are negligible, which is not necessarily the case in conventionally-sized thickeners. Fig. I shows a block diagram of a 100-t/h gold plant without a thickener. In this example, 50% of the tailings water pumped to the tailings dam is recovered, and the CN concentration of the returned water is 10% of the tailings CN concentration of 150 ppm. Fig. 2 represents a plant with an HRT on tailings, thickening to 55% w/w solids. In this case, the thickened tailings are pumped to the dam, and 25% of the contained water is recovered. The recovered water and the mill make-up water are not sent directly to the mill; instead, they are added to the thickener feed and mixed with it prior to thickening. By doing this, the tailings are effectively washed, and the additional cyanide is recovered. Solution balances over these two circuits show cyanide recoveries of 5% and 65%, respectively. Thus, the thickener use increases cyanide recovery by 60%. Fig. 3 shows a two-stage HRT circuit in a countercurrent decantation (CCD) configuration. In this example, an additional 13% of cyanide is recovered through the use of the second-stage unit. This configuration can be justified when residual cyanide levels are high. Prior to 1971, there were several clinical trials to evaluate programs for early detection of lung cancer. Among these, the Philadelphia Pulmonary Neoplasm Research Project,(3) the Veterans Administration Study published by Lilienfeld,(7) and the controlled trial of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan showed an overall five year survival rate of 8% for newly detected cases (the same as the national statistic for unscreened patients). In 1971, the National Cancer Institute initiated three randomized, controlled mortality studies using lung cancer screening of persons at high risk (male smokers over 45 years old). The studies are being conducted at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The studies have slightly different designs in the combination of sputum cytology and chest x-rays. At the Mayo Clinic the study group is offered screening with sputum cytology and chest x-rays every four months, whereas the control group is advised to have an x-ray and cytology every year. No reminders are sent, and it is believed that only about 20% of the control group is screened. At Johns Hopkins and Memorial, both experimental and control groups are offered annual chest x-rays. The experimental group is additionally offered sputum cytology every four months.(5) At present all of the programs show that screening can detect cancers that are undetectible by other means. However, at this time mortality rates in the control and experimental groups are not significantly different in any of the three studies. OUR PROGRAM Our clinic is located in Grants, New Mexico and we provide most of the pre-employment physical examinations for the mines operating in the Grants area (Kerr McGee Nuclear, Homestake Mining, United Nuclear, Western Nuclear, and Ranchers). In the examinations, we obtain the previous mining history of the worker, a chest x-ray, a sample of sputum for cytological examination, and a blood sample. We also provide routine annual physical examinations of the workers, with special interest in the detection of bronchogenic carcinoma. In the early seventies, we did not have a definite surveillance program. We did not know whether we should have a program like the one started at Memorial or like the one started at the Mayo Clinic. After long consideration, we decided to have a program that does not demand a sputum cytology and chest x-ray every four months, but that allows as many chest x-rays and sputum cytologies as needed to diagnose lung cancer as early as possible. We believe that, if a screening method for cancer is to be optimally effective, it must detect the process at stages early enough for curative therapy. We order a test depending on the age of the miner, the race, the mining history, the smoking history, the radiation exposure levels, and the results of the previous chest x-ray and sputum cytology. With the help of the computer, we have a list of all the miners who should be watched closely because of age, race, mining history, smoking history, radiation exposure, etc. Examination of the miners is performed at our clinic, where all the records are kept. The sputum is collected there but examined in Grand Junction, Colorado, by Dr. Geno Saccomanno. There are two ways to collect sputum. The best way is to collect three consecutive morning samples. For this, we need the cooperation of the miners. They have to follow these instructions and mail the bottle containing the sample to Grand Junction. "Instructions for obtaining a good cough specimen" The enclosed plastic bottle contains a preservative solution, so do not empty out the liquid in it. When you go to bed, place the plastic bottle at your bedside where it will be handy in the morning. When you first get up in the morning (before breakfast) try to cough up some "phlegm" from deep in your chest, and spit it into the liquid in the bottle. Try coughing several times. If you have difficulty coughing, try inhaling deeply the steam from a teakettle (or home-type inhalator). Keep the amount of saliva (ordinary spit) that you put into the bottle along with the cough specimen as small as possible. Do not collect the "phlegm" or mucous that comes from the back of your nose. Put the cap back on the bottle, and shake it vigorously for two minutes. If the amount of material you have coughed up is quite small, then keep the bottle at your bedside for three or four days, and each morning try to add another cough specimen. After obtaining your cough specimen, repack the bottle in the mailing container, and attach the enclosed mailing label. It does not require any postage stamps. Unfortunately, some miners "forget" to mail the sample and end up with an incomplete physical examination. To avoid this some companies, like Homestake, request that we obtain the sample in our clinic by forcing cough and expectorant with a nebulizer machine. This method does not give as good a sputum sample as the previous one, but we do get a sputum sample for every miner. Introduction As the US and world population increases, so does the problem of supplying expanding energy needs. Early requirements worldwide were mostly met by abundant forest vegetation. Man's large scale use of minerals-energy resources is a fairly recent development. It occurred only during the past 200 years. Coal was the first mineral fuel to be used extensively. It was not a large factor in US energy production until the beginning of the 19th century. Petroleum and natural gas use is about 125-years-old. Electricity generation by falling water is about a century old. Atomic energy is only about 30-years-old. Extensive use of it is still in the future. Solar energy is in its infancy. Other energy sources such as wind, peat, and geothermal energy are minor and primarily of local importance. There were three main features of the fuel supply picture during the past 125 years. By 1900 coal replaced wood as the principal energy source. Since 1900, oil and gas have captured many coal markets. And after the mid-1970s, there was a resurgence of coal usage. (Figs. 1 and 2). Wood Until the advent of mineral fuels for energy, the major global energy source was wood. But populations increased and became centered in towns and cities. The problem of a sufficient energy supply first developed as nearby, easily obtained wood was exhausted. This problem became more acute as industries such as shipbuilding, smelting, and pottery making, became more widespread. Results of wood use as an energy source and building material are starkly evident in areas of the world where civilization is oldest. Entire forests were consumed and have never been replaced. In the US, wood supplied 90% of all fuel requirements until about 1850; and more than 50% until after 1880. By 1900, wood still supplied 20% of all energy uses. In the mid-1970s, energy costs increased, due largely to the oil embargo. This increase resulted in an increased wood demand for domestic heating. While large quantities of wood were being used, its share of the total energy market was still less than 3%. By 1983, wood was becoming increasingly scarce and more costly near most large US cities. Wind Wind powered ocean vessels for many centuries. Sailing ships were still common in 1900. Windmills provided an early, cheap energy source and continue to be used today on farms. Design and development of windmills for electricity generation is being conducted. Interest in wind power is growing worldwide where availability of wind currents warrants the investment. Also, US regulation requires power companies to "buy back" electricity generated by windpower in excess of that used by the windmill owner. Coal By the 1600s, England was producing, 900 kt/a (1 million stpy) of coal for heating and other uses. The first coal-fired blast furnace for iron smelting was developed in 1621. Coke-making was developed in 1755, and Watt invented the steam engine in 1769. Illuminating gas made from coal was introduced in London in 1800. During this same 200-year period, France and Germany developed coal production, but on a smaller scale than England. US, bituminous coal was mined near Richmond, VA, as early as 1748. Major bituminous coal-producing states in the early period were Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, and Maryland. West Virginia replaced Virginia as a major producer, when that state was formed in 1863. As the US expanded west, new coal deposits were found and exploited. Indiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Washington, Colorado, Wyoming, Arkansas, Oklahoma (Indian Territory), Montana, New Mexico, and Texas had significant coal mining operations by 1900. Today the eight major coal producing states are Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, Wyoming, and Montana. These states accounted for about 80% of all coal (lignite, bituminous, and anthracite) produced in the US during the past several years.

Coal and rock pillar design is critical not only for mineral extraction but also for the safety of the mine operators. Pillar strength can be estimated through numerous empirical formulas that are available in the literature, which are typically based on a statistical analysis of case study data. The limitation of most of these equations is that they only considered the width to height ratio and in situ rock or coal strength for pillars in horizontal seams. The adoption of such equations to estimate pillar strength in inclined seams may overestimate the pillar strength and ultimately lead to a poor pillar design. This paper will discuss different techniques that can be used to estimate pillar strength in inclined seams as well as present preliminary modeling results for stress redistribution around inclined pillars. Factors in the parametric analysis include pillar shapes, geometry, and seam inclination.

Longwall mining is the preferred method for removing underground coal since a larger amount of coal can be removed faster and with less waste when compared to the room-and pillar type mining. Thus, the coal tonnage removed each year by longwall mining methods has increased dramatically. However, a high extraction rate results in surface subsidence which has adverse effects on the environment and on surface structures. Predictions of structural damage are dependent on the magnitude of the expected horizontal strains. Three methods for predicting subsidence characteristics are considered in this paper: the graphical method, the profile method, and the finite element method. All three methods can be used to predict ground movements and horizontal strains. However, the finite element method, which takes into account the structural properties of the stratigraphy and equilibrium of the overburden, is theoretically the more logical choice for use in subsidence prediction.

Potash was first discovered in Saskatchewan in 1943 but its continuous extraction did not begin until 1962. In the years since then, potash has played an important role in the economic and political life of the province. And, as is well-known, the most eventful time in the life of the industry occurred in 1975 when the Government of Saskatchewan decided to become a major participant in potash production. To understand that decision, however, requires an understanding of the economic development of Saskatchewan and of relations between the industry and the government prior to 1975. This year, Saskatchewan celebrates its 75th year as a province. For most of those years, we have been an agrarian economy and society, dependent on exports of cereal grains, mostly wheat, for a livelihood. Even today, agriculture accounts for about 25% of the province's Gross Domestic Product (Economic Review, 1979, p. 7) and difficulties in agriculture spread rapidly to the rest of the provincial economy. The difficulties and risks that go hand in hand with being a "one crop" economy were known as long ago as 1920 but were not fully appreciated until the combination of depression and drought in the 1930's turned the prairie grain- belt into a dustbowl. Some idea of the severity of the depression is revealed by the following data: in 1928, Saskatchewan produced 321 million bushels of wheat. By 1931, the total fell to 132 million bushels and, in 1937, to a mere 37 million bushels. The value of agricultural products sold off farms fell from $273,000,000 in 1928 to a meagre $51,000,000 in 1937. The impact of such a fall of agricultural incomes was catastrophic since about 70% of the population of some 921,000 persons lived in rural, agriculture-dependent areas (Britnel.1, 1939, p. 14).

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Since the beginning of operations, with the exception of a small tonnage mined by slushing, ore extraction has been by full gravity caving. Formerly, a checkerboard sequence of block undercutting was followed with the even-numbered blocks in one panel and the odd¬numbered blocks in the adjacent panel being mined. As these blocks were depleted, the intermediate or pillar blocks were mined (Fig. 1). Following this checker¬board, the mining sequence went through a number of changes, finally evolving into diagonal retreat panel cav¬ing by blocks (Fig. 2). The numbers in Fig. 2 indicate the sequence in which blocks were undercut. Gaps in the numbering sequence indicate undercutting on the level outside the illustrated area. Geology The ore body is a low-grade deposit of chalcopyrite mineralization disseminated throughout structurally weak, highly fractured, strongly altered granitic host rocks. It takes the shape of a gently dipping elliptical cylinder consisting of an ore shell of variable thickness surrounding an interior waste core. Major and minor axes of the mineralized cylinder are 1524 m (5000 ft) and 762 m (2500 ft), respectively, and length approximates 2438 m (8000 ft). Ore is sufficiently fractured to break readily into medium-coarse size. The igneous rock complex containing the ore body is covered by a wedge-shaped blanket of Tertiary con¬glomerate which was brought into place by faulting along the major regional structure of the San Manuel fault. Thickness of the conglomerate cap varies from only 9 m (30 ft) at the east end of the ore body to more than 610 m (2000 ft) at the west. Structurally, the con¬glomerate is much more competent than the igneous host rocks and, when caving, it breaks into massive chunks. Conglomerate boulders seen in drawpoints underground are very coarse. The total rock column over the initial mining area of the 1415 grizzly level was 354 m (1160 ft) of which 122 m (400 ft) was ore, 79 m (260 ft) was leached igneous capping, and 152 m (500 ft) was conglomerate above the San Manuel fault. Diamond Drilling: From 4572 to 7620 m (15,000 to 25,000 ft) are drilled annually from underground workings to delineate the ore body. MINE DEVELOPMENT Haulage Level In the south or main ore body (see Figs. 3-6), with the exception of the draw and transfer raises, all the extraction openings are concreted (Seaney and Tobie, 1965). The haulage panel drifts, which are 18 m (60 ft) below the grizzly drifts, are first driven with pre¬concrete ground support. The drift, which has an arched section, then is concreted using mobile collapsible steel tunnel forms. The haulage drifts leading from the pan¬els to the hoisting shafts are not concreted. After the panel drifts have been concreted, the raise stations from which transfer raises will be driven are constructed and the raise-station ore-drawing chute is installed. The chute is prefabricated of A-36 steel with undercut guillo¬tine gates made of abrasion-resistant 2.5-cm (1-in.) steel plate powered by 20-cm (8-in.) air cylinder installed on each side of the raise station. Transfer Raises The transfer raises are lined with 15 x 20-cm (6 x 8-in.) cribbing and are 1.22 m (4 ft) in the clear. Each cribbing is protected from wear by a high carbon steel angle which is nailed onto the cribbing. The transfer raises are driven from each side of the raise station on an angle of 1.1 rad (63°). Each raise con¬sists of a main and a backover branch. The transfer¬raise driving crew consists of two men working one shift only. Grizzly Drifts After the transfer raise reaches the grizzly level, the grizzly drift can be driven. The grizzly drifts are spaced at 10.6-m (35-ft) centers and are driven parallel to the long axis of the ore body (see Fig. 2). This drift is driven by a two-man crew working on one or more drifts at a time using feed-leg machines. The eight grizzlies in the 42.7-m (140-ft) long drift are spaced at 5.3-m
