One of the most important factors leading to the success of a cement plant is its location. A multicriteria decision-making method is used to rank alternative plant locations. The set of criteria is established and corresponding criteria should be established for each case study, although this multicriteria decision-making approach has broader applicability. In this paper, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with 5 criteria is used to develop a location evaluation hierarchy for an alumina?cement plant in East Azerbaijan province of Iran. Five alternatives for the plant location are evaluated. The main criteria are transportation, water supply, power supply, fuel supply and land. Other criteria have the same importance as these five alternatives. The alternatives are ranked by a multicriteria method and the best site is proposed. Several Rockmass classification systems have been developed and used in Civil Engineering design and for underground mining operations. Some of these rockmass classification systems have been modified and used in the South African coal mining industry to quantify descriptive geological information for use in coal mine design and roof support selection. The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) system developed in the USA has been investigated in detail as part of the study. Advantages and disadvantages of the system have been identified by means of underground and surface borehole testing. Investigations into the rating systems in South Africa found that most of the rating systems used in the South African coal mining industry are for planning purposes, and are conducted on borehole cores. This study also highlighted that the rating systems being used are based on geology, and that the human factor plays a major role in the rating systems. To overcome these problems, all the classification systems used in South African coal mines have been benchmarked against impact splitting technique and documented. The best elements of these systems are combined into a new standard system that will be easily used by all mine geologists and rock mechanics engineers. Certains de ces systèmes de classification de la masse rocheuse ont été modifiés et utilisés dans l'industrie minière sud-africaine pour quantifier l'information géologique descriptive utilisée dans la conception de mines de charbon et la sélection de soutènement du toit. Le système d'Evaluation de Toit de Mine de Charbon (CMRR) développé aux USA a été examiné en détail, comme part de l'étude présente. Tests en surface de trous de mine ont permis d'identifier les avantages et inconvénients du système. Une étude des systèmes d'évaluation en Afrique du Sud a révélé que la plupart des systèmes d'évaluation utilisés dans l'industrie minière sud-africaine sont utilisés pour la planification, et sont menés sur les carottes de trous de mine. L'étude présente a aussi souligné que les systèmes d'évaluation utilisés sont basés sur la géologie, et que le facteur humain joue un rôle majeur dans les systèmes d'évaluation. Pour surmonter ces problèmes, tous les systèmes de classification utilisés en Afrique du Sud ont été référencés en termes de technique de fissuration sur choc, et documentés. Les meilleurs éléments de ces systèmes sont combinés dans un nouveau système standard qui sera utilisé aisément par tous les géologues de mine et les ingénieurs miniers. Verschiedene Gesteinsmassenklassifikationssysteme wurden entwickelt und kamen im Design für Hoch- und Tiefbau und Untertageabbau zum Einsatz. Einige dieser Gesteinsmassen-klassifikationssysteme wurden modifiziert und sind in der südafrikanischen Kohlebergbauindustrie in Verwendung, um beschreibende geologische Informationen für die Anwendung im Design von Kohlebergwerken und der Firstabstützungsauswahl quantitativ zu beschreiben. Das in den USA entwickelte Kohlengrubenfirstbewertungssystem (CMRR) wurde als Teil der Studie im Detail untersucht. Vorteile und Nachteile des Systems sind mittels der Untergrund- und Oberflächenbohrlochprüfung gekennzeichnet worden. Prüfungen der Bewertungssysteme in Südafrika ergaben, daß die meisten Bewertungssysteme die in der südafrikanischen Kohlebergbauindustrie benutzt werden, Planungszwecken dienen und werden anhand von Bohrlochkernen durchgeführt. Diese Studie hob auch hervor, daß die verwendeten Bewertungssysteme auf Geologie basieren und daß der menschliche Faktor eine Hauptrolle in den Bewertungssystemen spielt. Um diese Probleme zu überwinden, wurden alle in südafrikanischen Kohlengruben benutzte Klassifizierungssysteme vergleichsweise in Hinblick auf Spaltschlagtechnik überprüft und dokumentiert. Die besten Elemente dieser Systeme werden in ein neues Standardsystem kombiniert, das leicht von allen Grubengeologen und von Gebirgsmechanikingenieuren benutzt werden kann.

Conventional stoping in hard rock mining is largely considered an operational environment. This paper suggests that stoping falls within the realm of a project management environment typified by uncertainty, variation, and large numbers of interdependencies. Stoping was then equated to a micro-project with many simultaneous activities that had to be executed accurately using finite resources within limited shift durations in order to reach specific goals. Critical chain project management (CCPM) principles were applied to the stoping activities, and the results showed that the number of blasts per panel can be significantly increased by successfully moving the distribution of work as close as possible to the start of shift. Critical chain principles also assisted in facilitating re-focusing and teamwork among stoping crews as well as between day- and night-shift crews. The main recorded success was in managing inherent protective capacities/local contingencies/fat/buffers that are found in all projects. The impact on mine health and safety (MHS) was significant as individual operators and crews became convinced that they could perform all stoping tasks (activities) without compromising accuracy or speed.

The optimum cut-off grade policy maximizes the net present value (NPV) of an open pit mining operation subject to the mining, processing, and refining capacity constraints. The traditional approaches to cut-off grade determination ignore the escalation of the economic parameters such as metal price and operating costs during life of an operation, and consequently lead to unrealistically higher values of the objective function. Further, the NPV of a mining operation declines due to the depletion of the available reserves, causing a decline in the optimum cut-off grade, i.e. higher cut-off grades in the early years of an operation and lower cut-off grades during the later years. Hence, low grade material mined in the earlier years may be stockpiled for processing during later years to offset the effect of escalating economic parameters on NPV. This paper demonstrates the combined impact of introducing economic parameters, escalation and stockpiling options into the cut-off grade optimization model. The model promises an enhancement in NPV as illustrated in a case study incorporating practical aspects of an open pit mining operation.

"SynopsisGibb Consulting Services was contracted by Eskom Line Engineering Services to conduct an investigation to determine the absolute displacement to date and infer the current rate of displacement of unsurveyed colliery backfill.At the test site, where a 400 kV power line is to be constructed, neither the surface nor the backfill material had been monitored and it was not possible to state whether the surface will be subject to future settlement that may compromise surface infrastructure. Therefore indirect methods of estimating current and future displacements needed to be found to act as a proxy for a comprehensive long-term settlement monitoring exercise and provide a reasonable estimate for the settlement that has occurred in the decades of mining.The innovative solution was to recover essentially undisturbed core from backfill using a sonic drill rig and use the measured dry density values from the samples as a proxy for the rate and absolute displacement in the backfill.The success in obtaining an essentially undisturbed backfill core and the clear relationship of the backfill density with age and depth allowed the conclusion to be issued that the power line infrastructure can be constructed over the backfill; with a warning that once the water table recovers after mining ceases some collapse settlement may occur.With this method, the amount of settlement can be predicted and, if proven conclusively, provides a way to confidently release huge areas of currently waste ground for future surface infrastructural development.IntroductionIn coal mining, it is normal mining practice to backfill the newly mined-out voids with the excavated waste rock and soils. As there is no requirement for the mining companies to uniformly compact the spoil or accurately monitor surface or inter-backfill displacement, these backfilled voids are prone to differential compaction and consolidation settlement. They are therefore avoided as sites for future surface infrastructure work, especially for linear structures such as roads, railways, and power lines."

Eutectic freeze crystallization (EFC) is a novel technique for the recovery of pure salt and pure water from hypersaline waste brines. It is therefore a promising technology for the treatment of industrial waste waters. The impurities caused by crystallizing salt out of multi-component brines by EFC have not yet been investigated, however. To these ends, the selenium impurity found in sodium sulphate, produced from the waste brine of a platinum operation, was investigated. It was believed that the similarity between sulphate and selenate ions allowed isomorphous substitution of selenate ions into the sodium sulphate crystals, which was the likely cause of impurity uptake. It was found that the presence of sodium chloride in the industrial brine promotes the uptake of selenium, while ionic strength of the brine and mass deposition rate of sodium sulphate did not have a significant effect on the selenium uptake. Isomorphous substitution is predicted to be the most significant mechanism by which all impurities will be taken up when applying EFC to other industrial waste brines.

Derelict and ownerless (D&O) mines in South Africa have been an ongoing concern for over a decade. While some progress has been made to rehabilitate D&O asbestos sites, significant work remains, exacerbated by the growth in illegal mining. There are concerns regarding the accuracy and transparency of the D&O database, lack of oversight, and constrained funding, and the government is increasingly looking to the private sector to fund rehabilitation. Given these challenges, a new, sustainable approach to D&O sites in South Africa is needed to bring clarity and transparency to the process, recognise responsibilities and promote partnerships, and explore economic opportunities at D&O sites to reduce the financial liability and respond to the growing demand for critical minerals. This article has three components: i) reviews of international D&O good practices; ii) it analyses South Africa’s current approach and the D&O sites; and iii) proposes a D&O framework that addresses data, risk ratings, responsibilities and rehabilitation, economic opportunities, and stakeholder engagement. The study finds that the majority of the 6,100 so-called abandoned D&O mines are quarries and mine site features, 16% are operational, at least 11% have owners, and only 752 (12%) require rehabilitation. The framework aims to bring clarity and fairness to decision-making and to assign risk and responsibility for rehabilitation and seeks to incorporate economic opportunities to reduce the financial burden of rehabilitation, create jobs for local communities, and respond to the growing demand for critical minerals for the clean energy transition.

Copper sulphate solutions are produced during the pressure leaching of first-stage leach residue in a typical base metal refinery process. Apart from impurities such as selenium and tellurium, this leach solution also contains other precious metals (Rh, Ru, and it) due to dissolution in the pressure leaching stage. Selenium and tellurium are removed from the leach solution by precipitation with sulphurous acid, since these elements negatively affect electrowinning. This study investigates the feasibility of modifying the Se/Te precipitation process step to achieve significant rhodium precipitation in addition to selenium and tellurium precipitation, in order to reduce the rhodium inventory of the process. Thiourea, S02, formaldehyde, formic acid, and sodium thiosulphate were evaluated to determine which of these reagents would achieve the highest Rh precipitation. Based on these screening tests, SO2 and thiourea were selected to be used as precipitation reagents in optimization tests. During these optimization tests, the operating temperature (80 to 150°C) and the amount of reagent added (80 to 140 per cent excess) were varied to evaluate the effects that these operating conditions have on the precipitation behaviour of Rh as well as Se, Te, Cu, and Ni, and to propose appropriate operating conditions. It was found that thiourea resulted in good Rh and Se precipitation (typically in excess of 90 per cent), but precipitated noticeably more copper and nickel from the solution than when SO2 was used. In addition, thiourea had poor Te removal characteristics. SO2 achieved a maximum of 70 per cent precipitation of the rhodium. Faster kinetics and a larger extent of Te precipitation were, however, observed when using SO2 compared to thiourea.

Laser coatings are used for a wide variety of applications. TiB2/Ni intermetallic matrix composite coatings were fabricated on Al-substrate by a high power Rofin Sinar Nd: YAG solid-state laser. The characterization of the coatings was carried out by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Electrochemical study of the laser coatings in 3.65 per cent NaCl at room temperature revealed that with very high weight proportion of nickel the corrosion resistance of the coatings deteriorated due the presence of AlB10 phase. 50 wt per cent TiB2+50 wt per cent Ni laser coatings exhibited the highest corrosion resistance in test solution. The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are two distinct, shallow-dipping stratiform tabular orebodies which strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 300 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely employed to support the open stopes. In the deeper levels, in-stope pillars are required to fail in a stable manner soon after being cut, and the residual pillar strength is used to stabilize the hanging wall. These pillars are commonly known as crush pillars. Little work has been done in the past to determine pillar peak and residual strengths, and pillars have been designed using experience and formulae developed for other hard-rock mines. This has led to over and undersize pillars with consequential loss of ore, pillar bursts and potential collapses. This paper describes a crush pillar design methodology, and provides design charts. Three mining environments were incorporated in the investigations, which included underground and laboratory measurements, analytical solutions, numerical model sand back analyses. The results of the study are suitable for the areas where the research was carried out, and may also be applied with caution in other similar environments.

In this paper a genetic algorithm is used in a heavily jointed rock mass in order to investigate the critical circular slip surface and modification of slope surface. This method was applied to the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine. The mine is the largest bauxite deposit in Iran, located to the northeast of the town of Jajarm in the Khorasan province. Estimated reserve of bauxite in this deposit is about 160 million tonnes. Field and laboratory investigations were conducted in order to determine rock mass behaviour. A genetic algorithm code that uses the Simplified Bishop method as an objective function was developed for findingt he safety factor of circular slip surfaces. Sensitivity analysis was applied to determine the optimum values of the genetic algorithm variables, such as population size, selection method, crossover and mutation rates. After finding the critical circular slip surface, slope modification is carried out by removing unstable sections from marked critical slip surfaces, and this process is repeated until the last unsafe section is removed. Based on this code, modification occurred during 7 steps, by reaching a safety factor of 1.3 in the last step. Finally, the modified slope angle of the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine was determined to be 48.44 degrees. Horizontal rotating mills are being used all over the world associated with different mineral and power generation industries. David Brown South Africa, with over 140 years of experience in gear manufacture and design, has been supplying these industries with innovative designs at exceptional quality. The gearing systems associated with these industries are challenged daily with operating conditions with are not always fully understood. Failures are therefore experienced, over time in the industry, which can therefore not always be fully explained. David Brown South Africa has developed a gear monitoring system, the Intelligent Gearing System, in association with Transmission Dynamics (UK), in order to monitor and analyze these operating conditions in real time. The system has been designed on the principles of Six Sigma, incorporating Design for Six Sigma. The purpose with this system design is to monitor the operating conditions on the pinion, record the information and analyze the data in relation to the rate of fatigue damage to the girth gear and pinion. This is done in real time and unattended. The output from the Intelligent Gearing System can be fed back into the operating system of the mill user, in order to display an alarm for operating conditions exceeding the design criteria as well as information on the rate of fatigue damage due to these operating conditions. When the mill operating conditions are better understood, and the effect on the fatigue life of the mill gearing components, mill users can forecast critical spare holding levels with an increased accuracy. The Intelligent Gearing System also allows early actions to remove reasons for system overloads.

GIS documents are of great interest for a quick and low-cost determination of areas endangered by rockfalls. They allow (i) the detection of potential instabilities from steep slopes and cliff areas, and (ii) the preliminary estimation of potential run-out areas by means of a so-called cone method. After the presentation of the tools used to compute these areas, the paper focuses on two methods developed for a preliminary hazard mapping, one at regional scale and the other at local scale. Nach der Vorstellung der zur Berechnung der bedrohten Gebiete benötigten Hilfsmittel stellt der Artikel zwei Methoden zur vorläufigen Gefahrenkartierung in lokalem und regionalem Maßstab vor. Les SIG sont très intéressants pour une détermination rapide et peu onéreuse des zones affectées par des chutes de blocs. Ils permettent une détection des zones potentiellement instables et une estimation sommaire des zones de propagation des blocs par une méthode dite des cônes. Après la description des outils utilisés pour définir ces zones, l’article expose deux méthodologies élaborées pour un zonage préliminaire du danger, l’une à l’échelle régionale et l’autre à l’échelle locale.

Mineralogy, traditionally associated with concentrator studies, is being increasingly applied to problems in pyrometallurgy. Such investigations commonly make use of a number of techniques, and the results are combined for a meaningful interpretation, which can lead to a successful solution for the problem. Mineralogical techniques are described for various pyrometallurgical operations. Examples are given of studies and investigations involving mineralogy in chemical-looping combustion, feed monitoring to platinum-smelting furnaces, and losses to slag in base metal and platinum smelting.

The 2101 lean duplex stainless steel has wide potential application in storage, heat exchangers, and in the oil and gas industries. This work investigates the electrochemical behaviour of 2101 duplex stainless steel with an addition of 0.15 wt% ruthenium, using potentiodynamic techniques in 1M H2SO4 at 25º, 40º, 60º, and 80ºC. The microstructures of samples were characterized using optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the ruthenium addition moved the corrosion potential of alloy 2101 to a more positive potential. All samples containing ruthenium displayed longer passive regions at 25°C and 80°C compared to those without ruthenium. Alloys without ruthenium had higher critical current density (icrit) values when compared to the alloys with ruthenium. Ruthenium additions decreased the passive current densities and inhibited anodic dissolution. At room temperature the corrosion rate of alloys with ruthenium was lower than these without ruthenium.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Phd.(Process Engineering) degree Process modelling is an essential element in the development of advanced (model-based) process control systems, accounting for up to 80% of the cost of development. Often, models based on historic process data are the only viable option when dealing with processes that cannot be modeled cost-effectively from first principles. Despite major advances that have recently been made in the field of nonlinear process modeling, some basic idea of the dynamic behaviour of a process system is important prior to system identification. While many process systems seem unlikely to be linear, the possible nonlinear aspects of their dynamics are not necessarily supported by the data. This may have significant implications for subsequent system identification or interpretation of the data. For example, it is quite possible that an underlying nonlinear deterministic signal may be obscured by a high degree of measurement or process noise, to the extent that it may be critical in the choice of model to fit to the data. The method of surrogate data analysis has recently been proposed as a means to classify the underlying dynamics of complex systems, and in this paper the use of Fourier transform surrogates to classify process systems is explored. An effective prototype face support system to minimize rockfalls in rockfall-prone mines was developed and patented during a project sponsored by the Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC). An experimental development model (XDM) roof support unit was developed and evaluated. Mines with rockfall problems in the face areas can use the roof support system to reduce fatalities and injuries in the face area of stopes. The roof support system consists of two similar support units connected to each other via two crank mechanisms. Each unit consists of a headboard supported by a ?wishbone? structure (top and bottom leg). In the first design a threaded bar with struts similar to a scissors jack keeps the legs apart. (In the final version that was field trialed, the threaded bar mechanism was replaced with a hydraulic cylinder). All the components are manufactured from steel. To move the system forward the first support unit is collapsed, the second remaining in the loaded position. The first unit then hangs from the second unit to which it is connected. The first collapsed unit is then manually cranked forward and prestressed. If the required position is still not achieved, the other unit is released and moved forward. The specification for the system was determined and presented at a workshop with industry participants. Different concepts were developed and evaluated against the system specifications. A technology demonstrator was then developed and tested on surface. The technology demonstrator development process included detail design, building and testing of components and subsystems, design reviews and the building and commissioning of the technology demonstrator. The testing of the technology demonstrator was done in a 500-ton hydraulic press, in a mock-up stope and underground. A risk analysis, in which technical, logistical and economic aspects were assessed, was done to determine the critical areas of the system. During the next phase of the project working prototypes were developed for underground tests and evaluation. This process indicated that it was necessary to adjust the system specifications and a redesign was called for. In an iterative process test units were built for purposes of evaluation, specification verification and field trialing. After the successful conclusion of the trials the equipping of a complete production stope started for purposes of integrating the system into the current mining process.

Merensky Reef is mined extensively within the Bushveld Complex. In previously mined-out areas on the Merensky Reef horizon there are pillars, potholes and remnants that have not been mined. These unmined blocks of ground on the Merensky Reef horizon can influence the mining of the underlying UG2 Reef. The extent of the influence will depend on the size of unmined ground and the middling between the two reef horizons. This paper quantifies the influence of partially extracted Merensky Reef on mining of the UG2 Reef, and aims to provide recommendations for mining strategies, as well as regional and local support to achieve efficient and safe extraction of the UG2 Reef, for various middlings beneath the Merensky Reef horizon. In some cases it was found that relatively shallow UG2 Reef mining could encounter conditions similar to those experienced in deep and ultra-deep mining environments.
