This Bureau of Mines publication contains analyses and related source data for 349 natural gas samples from 26 States and 2 foreign countries. The 3 samples from foreign countries and 339 of the U.S. samples were collected during calendar year 1983. The remaining seven samples were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1983. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by the mass spectrometer and chromatograph. The results of these investigations are published annually to make the information available to the petroleum industry and the general public. Twenty-seven publications have presented the results of 13,332 gas analyses made prior to 1983. The first three bulletins (1-3)3 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960; these bulletins have been supplemented annually by information circulars (4-17, 19-24, 26-27) containing 8,104 analyses of sam¬ples collected since 1960.

"INTRODUCTION The Blue Bell fluorite deposits were examined in August and November 1944 by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines, and an underground project was set up. The Bureau of Mines began development of fluorite here February 10, 1945, and completed its survey on June 21, 1946.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Heliopore process is essentially an arrangement that uses the waste heat in the exhaust gas of an internal - combustion engine to carbonize coal (noncaking ) or lignite . The gases distilled from the coal furnish fuel for the internal - combustion engine , which drives an electric generator . Thus the main products of the plant are electricity and char . A flow diagram illustrating the principles of operation of the Heliopore process is given in figure 1. The primary equipment consists of a carbonizing retort , gas cooling and scrubbing equipment, a gas storage holder, and an engine to burn the gaseous carbonization products . Coal is charged into the top of the retort while the hot gases from the engine travel upward through special ducts in the retort countercurrent to the coal flow . The hot gases never come into direct contact with the coal . Char is discharged at the bottom of the retort and hot gases at the top . The gaseous products resulting from carbonization of the coal are drawn off by an exhauster through the condensing and scrubbing equipment to take out tar and liquor , then to a gas holder , and finally are burned in a gas engine . The gas engine drives an electric generator and the engine exhaust gases are returned to the retort to carbonize coal . The entire process was intended to be continuous and self - sustaining, and to use coal as the only fuel . The plant may be said to be a large - scale pilot plant in that , although it is of full commercial size , its main purpose is to provide data for the design of others of its type . The installation tested had a daily throughput of about 4 tons of coal . Figures 2 , 3 , and 4 picture some details of the plant and equipment used in the experimental testing . Further details of the equipment and engineering drawings of the castings are shown in figures 8 to 22 in the Appendix .

This report presents the results of calculations of the equilibrium composition of the products of combustion with air of six different mixtures of octane CgH18, plus PbEt4 and halogen-bearing scavengers at three air-fuel ratios, at pressures of 5 and 30 atm., and at temperatures of 350°, 1,000°, 1,800°, and 2,000° K. The air-fuel weight ratio has the values 12, 15:12, and 18. The concentration of PbEt4, M, in milliliters per gallon of iso-octane, has the value 1 or 3. During the past 15 years the Bureau of Mines has made and published several hundred analyses of typical petroleums and has developed a system of interpreting the analyses and of classifying crude oils. In describing crude petroleum frequent reference is made to the "base" of the oil, a usage the petroleum industry has found convenient. As part of its general study of the characteristics of crude oils, therefore, the Bureau of Mines has developed a system of classifying them according to "base." This system as first published in 1927 was limited to four classes and in its original form is no longer considered adequate. Since the system was first published the Bureau has analyzed a large number of crude oil, including representative samples from nearly every important producing field in the world, and has found that the system of classification could be revised and amplified to advantage. The revised system is presented herein.

This Bureau of Mines report evaluates audio dosimeters, 3 sample units from each of 10 currently marketed brands. Each dosimeter was treated as a "black box" with the acoustic stimulus as the input and the accumulated dosage as the output. The dosimeter microphones were exposed to a sound field gener¬ated in an anechoic chamber. Characteristics evaluated include frequency response (100 to 8,000 Hz), level-time trade-off rate (88 to 117 db), status of calibration, crest-handling capability, and power consumption rate. Experi¬mental errors revealed by replication of the tests were found to be generally much smaller than variations in performance among the samples of any brand, and possibilities of further reducing the magnitude of these errors are discussed.

This digest, based upon a translation" of certain portions of the 1930 law, covers the pertinent points of what has been termed "The New Mining Law of Luxemburg," the Grand Ducal Order (Arrêté) of April 26, 1930, concerning the exploitation of "mines, minières, and carrières, 4 and abrogating the order of January 2, 1891, concerning the same subject." The Duchy of Luxemburg, which between 1735 and 1815 was French, adopted as its basic mining law the French Law of April 21, 1810, and an Imperial Decree of January 3, 1813. The Luxemburg Government later supplemented and modified this legislation by the laws of June 12, 1874, April 30, 1890, and May 10, 1898, which, with article 36 of the Constitution, are to be taken into consideration in a complete survey of mining legislation. The Technology Transfer Seminar on Mine Communications held on March 21-77, 1973, at the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center, Bruceton, Pa., presented information about recently developed equipment, instruments, and techniques for use in mine communications systems. All of the basic ideas presented in the fine seminar are operational in the Bureau of Mines Safety Research Mine in Bruceton.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine the relation-ship between geologic features and linears. Cleats, kettlebottoms, and roof rolls were mapped and superimposed on the linear plots for a coal mine in West Virginia. No clear relationships were evident. This may be due, in part, to the mining practice of leaving head coal, which obscures geologic features that may exist in the roof. Future studies should concentrate on mines where roof is extensively exposed.

"INTRODUCTION During the war period the Bureau of Mines expanded its investigations on western coals principally in connection with Investigations of raw material resources for western steel production. Owing to the expansion of the steel industry, there was some concern regarding the availability of suitable coking coals; end because of the potential steel shortage, the production of sponge iron, using the lower-rank fuels, was considered. Work was conducted by the Bureau of Mines on exploration projects and on testing of coals both at the Central Experiment. Station at Pittsburgh, Pa., and at the Bureau of Mines Station at Golden, Cole.The results of these investigations are being published by the Bureau in several reports of investigations and technical papers. In making this resume of coal investigations, the work done by the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh in the Mining and Coal Carbonization Sections will be discussed and the investigations at Golden described in greater detail.INVESTIGATIONS OF WESTERN COALSThe Mining and Coal Carbonization Sections of the Coal Division, Bureau of Mines, under the supervision of A. L. Teeny es and J. D. Davis, respec¬tively, conducted many field investigations to locate and evaluate new sources of coking coals. Drilling explorations were made in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, and Washington and revealed two important new reserves of coking coal. The first one studied was the Willow Creek bed at Kemmerer, Wyo., which was reported in 1945.3/ A recoverable reserve estimated at 11,200,000 tons was blocked out, and samples of coal were extracted for coking tests. The coking properties of the coal were not quite equal to those of Sunnyside coal, but it was indicated that a 50-percent blend of the Willow Creek with Lower Sunnyside will produce a satisfactory metallurgical coke based on Columbia steel standards."

This paper is one of a series on mining methods and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. In April 19.74 the St. Joseph Lead Co., at Atlanta, Elmore County, Idaho, was mining and milling about 225 tons of gold ore daily with a total force of 150 men. The mine, which comprises the old Boise-Rochester and Monarch properties, is at an elevation of about 6,000 feet. Snow lies on the ground about 5 months each year but does net interfere greatly with local operations. However, the road to Mountain Home, the shipping point 80 miles distant, passes over a high range and usually is closed by snow from about November 15 to June 15. Heavy supplies are brought in and concentrates trucked out during the summer. In winter the district is served by a biweekly mail plane and a passenger and express plane making 4 to 6 trips weekly. Mine timber is cut locally. A plentiful supply of water is obtained from a stream brought to the property through 7,500 feet of plume.

West Virginia ranks second in the nation in coal production, surpassed only by Wyoming, and usually accounts for 15 to 20percent of the nation's total annual production. Cod occurs in seams of minable thickness in all but nine of the state's 55 counties. There are two coal- producing regions, the northern field and the southern field. West Virginia coal is mined by both underground and surface methods. Underground mines in West Virginia account for a major portion of its coal production. Surface mines are generally contour operations and, especially in the southern field, are in steep slope areas, with slopes greater than 20 degrees. Many of the surface mines remove multiple seams. Recoverable reserves in West Virginia total in excess of 55 billion tons of bituminous coal. West Virginia's regulatory program was conditionally approved on January 19, 198 1. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 23,198 1, with emergency authority granted on August 26,1988.

The Bureau of Mines has used colloidal solutions of magnetite in a magnetic field to segregate nonmagnetic materials such as nonferrous scrap metals and to concentrate precious minerals. Conventional magnetic separation relies on the inherent magnetic susceptibility of the material to be separated and may be designated as magnetic separation of the first kind the medium of separation rather than the separated particles are made magnetizable, a new system of gravity separation results. In this new magnetic separation of the second kind, a magnetic fluid rather than air or water acts as the separation medium. The same force that attracts magnetic objects in separations of the first kind also attracts the entire separation medium in separations of the second kind, thereby creating a reactionary force of equal magnitude in the opposite direction. This force, sometimes called the levitation force, can be made to segregate nonmagnetic particles in a flowing stream according to their specific gravity. The technique has been applied to segregate nonferrous metals from automobile and appliance shredders and mixed scraps. The system has also been used to upgrade diamondiferous jig concentrates from certain river gravels in order to facilitate the sorting and recovery of their diamond content.

In 2006, a total of 4,573 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Stone mines comprised 30.7% of all mining operations. ? Mines producing the primary commodity of limestone (crushed and broken) comprised the largest number of operations (n=2,042; 44.7%). ? Stone mining operations were located in all states and territories except Delaware and North Dakota. ? Pennsylvania had the most stone mines (n=368; 8.0%), followed by Texas (n=342; 7.5%).

[Stimulative methods of production, whereby the total recovery of oil from natural reservoirs is increased, have come into considerable prominence during the past 15 years. In many oil-producing areas properties considered ready for abandonment by ordinary producing methods have responded to some form of stimulation, and their economic lives have been extended. The stimulative method having widest application is the injection of air or gas into the reservoir formations through selected input wells and is commonly referred to as the ?gas drive." As a result of the many successful "gas-drive" operations operators are depending more and more upon this method for increasing the ulti¬mate recovery of oil from their properties. A number of factors influence the efficiency of different gases as propulsive agents in recovering oil from sands. Gases of high density and viscosity shrew a tendency toward a slightly higher efficiency than those of lower density and viscosity. The solubility of the gas in the oil also affects the efficiency of oil recovery. Not only does dissolved gas decrease the viscosity of the oil, but dissolved gas that expands from solution in the oil tends to increase the effectiveness of a "gas drive." Interfacial tension between the oil and the gas and its effect upon the recovery of oil by gas injection are factors of which little is known. Dr. A. G. Loomis5 expressed the opinion that interfacial tension probably plays a minor role in the recovery of oil, except under conditions that produce a gas-oil foam. In connection with the above physical properties that influence the action of a pressure medium, control of the injected volume of the pressure medium is perhaps the major factor. The rate ofg;as injection determines to a great extent the amount of slippage and the resulting efficiency of the operation. The importance of volume control is realized when one considers that frequently it is the only factor that is under complete control of the operator.]

Carbon reduction of rutile and ilmenite in nitrogen and ammonia atmospheres was studied as a method of preparing titanium nitride . Ammonia was a better nitriding agent than nitrogen . The contact between the solid reactants , carbon and rutile , was a prime factor in nitrogen atmospheres and was of lesser import in dissociated ammonia . The reduction process for conversion of rutile to the nitride required carbon . The nitriding of ilmenite- carbon mixtures produced titanium nitride and elemental iron .

As deeper seams are continually mined, methane liberation will continue to increase and must be monitored effectively. To effectively monitor and develop appropriate control technology, methane-liberation patterns must be known. The Bureau of Mines recently completed a study to identify specific patterns of face methane liberation during long- wall mining. Both of the longwall faces surveyed had high methane liberation rates. At one longwall face, most of the methane was liberated during cutting of coal by the shearer mining machine. At the second face, a significant portion of methane was emitted from the face and floor. An effective methane-monitoring system would be different for each longwall panel because of the differences in how the gas is released along the face.

Thirty-seven blasts have been monitored using either three or four seismographs, at four coal strip mines and at a limestone quarry. Statistical analysis of the data shows that square-root, cube-root, and site-specific scaling methods predict peak particle velocities with about the same (low) degree of reliability. Some mines have peak particle velocities that are significantly lower or higher than the U.S. Bureau of Mines averages (Siskind et al., 1980). This suggests that the option provided by the proposed regulations (Office of Surface Mining, 1983), to adjust blast designs based on site-specific measurements could be highly beneficial both to operators and to the public. The frequency spectra reveal that the predominant frequencies were generally less than 50 Hz but several blasts had a significant amount of energy up to 125 Hz. In some cases the vibration energy was concentrated at frequencies corresponding to the delay intervals.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of significant coalbeds in Kanawha County , W. Va . It is one in a series of Federal Bureau of Mines reports planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke , either as mined or after beneficiation . Almost 9.4 million tons of coal was produced in Kanawha County , W. Va . , in 1959 , of which about 67 percent was cleaned mechanically in 10 cleaning plants . It has been estimated that more than 5,505 million tons remain in the county . Samples were collected from Pittsburgh , Stockton - Lewiston , Winifrede , Cedar Grove , Peerless , Upper Kittanning , Coalburg , Powellton , Eagle A , No. 2 Gas , and the Lower Kittanning beds . These beds were selected by the Bureau based on current production rates and estimated minable reserves . Float - and - sink tests of the samples collected from Eagle A , Peerless , Cedar Grove , Winifrede , and No. 2 Gas beds show that these coals at one location each are suitable for metallurgical use without washing . Lower Kittanning bed at four locations ; Pittsburgh , Stockton - Lewiston , and No. 2 Gas beds at two locations each ; and Coalburg , Powellton , Winifrede , Peerless , Upper Kittanning , and Cedar Grove beds at one location each can be upgraded to metallurgical quality by mechanical cleaning . Crushing the samples to 3/ 8- inch top size increased yields substantially at 1.30 specific gravity of Pittsburgh ( 17.5 percentage points ) and Upper Kittanning ( 13.0 percentage points ) beds and increased yield for the other beds sampled to a lesser amount . At this specific gravity , finer crushing caused In the 1.58 specific gravity float a general decrease in ash and sulfur . fractions of the other samples tested , most of the yields , and ash and sulfur contents , were lowered slightly by finer crushing .

The introduction and use of synthetic materials in various applications may lead to potential hazards from toxic, gaseous, decomposition products if these materials are subjected to conditions abnormal to their intended use, such as high temperatures or burning from accidental causes. This report covers an investigation of such possible hazards from toxic gases produced by the burning or thermal decomposition of some low-density, expanded, synthetic materials, three of which consisted of polyvinylchloride and one of acrylonitrile. In the production of certain expanded plastic materials, Chemical blowing agents frequently are used to produce a cellular structure. One of these blowing or foaming agents contains azo-bis-isobutyronitrile, which is designated in this report as PN. Information indicates that a product of decomposition of this blowing agent, formed in the blowing operation, is tetra-methyl-succino-nitrile, designated as TSN, Which is significantly toxic. Decomposition of the blowing agent, with release of its azo nitrogen, is represented by the following reaction:
