The demolition of an old power plant boiler house in Parsons, Kansas calls for the use of some linear shaped charges. The steel is thick and the structure is heavy but gravity can be a blaster’s best friend. This entry did not win in a very competitive category. We thought it was worthy of coverage in the Journal of Explosives Engineering.

Simple bulk energy rating of explosives obscures the realities of how these deliver their energy, and diverts attention from the key question of controlling blasting results. Explosive performance is directly related to the pressure pulse impacting on the blasthole wall. This is helpfully visualised by comparing the adiabatic expansion plots for explosives of interest on the right scales and axes. The simple comparison of a pure emulsion with pure ANFO illustrates the practical significance of the intrinsic behaviour of these opposed formulations, showing that the emulsion can be expected to work more by softening rock, while ANFO will tend more to crack it. The explanation for these differences lies in the high shock, low sustained pressure of the former relative to the latter. The technique is readily applied, if a good detonation code is available and able to swap data into a spreadsheet. Any differences between codes will emerge most strongly in comparing the gamma plots.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been studying the problem of why explosives detonate weakly or misfire during blasting in underground coal mines. Cross-borehole shock wave interaction has been identified as a predominant mechanism causing explosives to function improperly (1)(Underline numbers in parenthesis refer to items in the list of references at the end of this report.). Cross-borehole shock wave interaction can be simulated in a laboratory setting, making possible the replication of tests in sufficient numbers to understand and quantify some of its effects on permissible explosives (2). The work presented here investigates the capacity of explosives to partially recover from the desensitizing influence of the shock wave. The recovery trend of different explosives can indicate optimum blasting patterns useful for minimizing borehole charge malfunctions.

As farms decrease and subdivisions increase there is a continuing demand for easy and safe silo removal. A few years ago I attended one of the Omni istribution explosive classes and was impressed by a product designed by Omni owner Bill Nixon called the Omni Breach. Its original purpose and main current use is law enforcement; specifically door breaching and tactical operations, with most of the force coming from water using a minimal amount of explosive component. I experimented with various charge strengths on concrete and found that it can be easily shattered with little flyrock or airblast. A neighbor of mine had an old silo within a foot of a barn that he was rebuilding and inquired about its removal. His property was sandwiched between an elementary school and Interstate 40, so I told him that I would do some test shots and if the results proved satisfactory, I would take the job for free to test the following theory.

A study was conducted to measure underwater pressures associated with confined borehole shooting used to remove rock for The Kill Van Kull Deepening Project, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District. A major natural-resource-agency concern was the potential for fish mortality during explosive rock removal. Currently, fish mortality models are based on testing programs that exposed captured organisms to open-water blasts. Natural resource agencies, without in-house explosive engineering expertise, generally are not familiar with the physical properties of blasting underwater. Confined shots are most often used for demolition and rock removal underwater. Pressure amplitudes from confined blasts are significantly reduced as compared to open-water blasts that, are commonly used for fish testing The duties of natural resource agencies are made even more difficult by the lack of published data on pressures associated with confined blasting. As a result, explosive weights for confined shots mistakenly have been used to run mortality models that were developed using open-water blast pressure data. This study was conducted to collect pressure measurements during rock removal for the KVK deepening project and compare those data with computed peak pressures for open-water explosions.

Delay detonators that are damaged by cross-hole wave interactions degrade blasting work and raise the risk of incidents. Damaged detonators impose risk, because they can retain sensitive explosives that respond to stray energy during recovery, inspection or disposal. Laboratory techniques were developed to rank the ruggedness of delay detonators under replicated field-shooting conditions. The hazards are tremendously magnified if trial detonators are installed directly in secondary explosives to rank initiation strength. Therefore indirect ranking techniques were sought that mitigate the risks without compromising the worthiness of the method. Four types of hardware fixtures, referred to as simulators, were developed to yield distinct forms of transient compression. The shock and rift versions generate compression pulses representative of in situ waveform components. The waiting time, until the trial detonator functions, duplicates typical delay periods. The trial detonator is mounted within water, which has a density and inertial resistance comparable to most blasting explosives. The work output from the trial detonator explosion is registered as fixture wall-expansion. This work output determines malfunction results, regardless of which type of simulator is used.

In the center of Helsinki - capital of Finland - extensive blasting operations were carried out during the years 1982 - 84. At the corner of the streets Mannerheimintie and Simonkatu - in the Forum block - about 125,000 cu.m. of rock were blasted to give place for a new modern shopping centre (Fig. 1). Added to this amount of rock another 10,000 cu.m. were blasted for a transport tunnel to an adjacent underground bombshelter (Fig.2) which is to be used as a parking place in peace-time. The blasting work was demanding and difficult to carry out due to old buildings surrounding the work-site as well as computers and other sensitive equipment installed in some of them.

This paper includes research and investigation into blast design and blast optimization for vibration control in municipal and tight blasting situations, where specifications were extremely stringent. The paper is written for the field blaster to understand and develop blast plans based on field conditions. The paper includes blast design considerations, utilizing seismograph arrays to check and predict vibration results, and problems encountered in vibration monitoring in extremely tight situations (0-20 feet). Blast vibration frequency, acceleration, peak particle velocities, and relative displacement are discussed with effects in the near and far fields and blast designs utilized to stay under limits. The paper also discusses using the latest in technology for blast design to control vibration. Equipment includes 2D and 3D laser profiling systems, digital video, fragmentation analysis, seismograph arrays, and borehole tracking devices. Other topics are discussed such as public relations, working with regulatory personnel, unions, and other project consultants, and the problems associated with municipal blasting situations, such as, flyrock and proximity of other personnel and equipment on the project.

Limited void volume blasting (LVVB) occurs when rock is blasted into a volume that is not sufficient to let the rock expand to its free-bulking value. The freebulking value is obtained when the rock particles have enough space to separate, tumble and rotate to produce the maximum amount of void possible between the fragments when they finally come to rest. Although bulking value depends on particle size distribution and shape, a typical free-bulking value for uniform, finely broken shale is about 1.67. LVVB occurs in almost every type of blasting used in both surface and underground mining operations. For example, in multiple-row bench blasting for surface mining, the final delays that are designed to fragment the rock furthest from the free-face are generally confined by previously blasted rock which results in a LVVB situation. In underground mining, the blasting is automatically confined and is commonly done intentionally to limited void volume to reduce mining cost and improve safety. LVVB primarily affects rubble bulking and thus the excavation of the broken rock which is related to the productivity and economics of a mining operation.

Sinkhole development in karst terrains is a serious problem and risk to facilities built in these areas. The potential for sinkholes are a function of many things including the chemistry of the underlying rock, the location of water conductive fractures and fissures in the rock, the natural fluctuation of the ground water table, vibrations from various sources and surface regrading activities. When sinkhole open near quarry operations the occurrence of these features is occasionally attributed to vibrations from quarry blasting. The purpose of this paper is to review the evidence regarding the development of sinkholes as a result of quarry blasting. In general, it has been found that sinkholes result from collapse or piping of overburden soils into cavities or caverns developed within underlying carbonate rocks that have been in existence for many thousands of years. The overburden soils in karst areas are typically clayey and as a result are not subject to densification or liquefaction as a result of vibrations. The primary cause of an increased rate of sinkhole development can be attributed to changes in the ground water table or local surface water drainage. These changes may be caused by seasonal fluctuations, ground water level lowering in drought periods, dewatering of excavations or quarries, or local changes in surface drainage resulting from grading activities.

Toxic fume concentrations from industrial mining explosives depend somewhat upon the type of rock (or other strata) confinement. Though traditional detonation theory disregards this influence, the work principal from thermodynamics reveals it, when the violent interactions that transpire within the rock blast are taken into proper account. Resolution of the work principle technique requires total thermodynamic equilibrium under constraint, so the nonequilibrium dynamics is rendered in that way, using an old trick from theoretical mechanics that revises the representation of forces. The rock pressure reduces to a four-component sum: the rock compressive strength and natural atmospheric pressure, as reckoned quasi-statically, and the gravitational influence and reversed inertial resistance, as reckoned dynamically. Tabulated specie concentrations and graphical trends reveal the dependency upon rock pressure, rock temperature and the fuel-oil percentage in ammonium nitrate mixtures (ANFO), used to illustrate the model. Rigid-wall test chambers have notable ullage (residual space), where rapid expansion influences the reaction quenching, yielding a fume spectrum unlike that for rock confinement; reported rock tests are therefore used for comparisons. For the thermodynamic regime where quenching occurs, seven concentrations are resolved, including carbon monoxide (CO) and total nitrogen oxides (NOX). Their trends yield inferences regarding the way unwanted charge desensitization from transitory hole-to-hole wave impact in conjunction with reduced rock pressure can yield nasty toxic fumes, the dark rusty cloud phenomenon!

Generally in Japan, since ANFO has easy handling and low-price, it is most used as industrial explosives. However, ANFO is very easy to dissolve in water, it is difficult to use under existence of water and the consumer have desired water-resistant ANFO which has perfect water resistance. Then, we have developed the Water-Resistant Granular Explosive (It is written as following WRGE.) in which the surface of the explosive was covered by waterproof film, so that WRGE is able to use in hole with water. We ran various performance tests about the WRGE developed in the laboratory. Consequently, WRGE has water resistance of over 6 hours, and it has been checked that a performance and handleability were equivalent to the conventional ANFO. Then, we carried out the field test in the consumption site, and did performance evaluation on an on-site level. As compared with ANFO, fragmentation (size and volume) and handleability are almost equivalent. However, some problems which the WRGE is not settled out smoothly in hole with water and need more time for loading were also clarified. We are going to continue some advanced improvements through field tests.

A series of small-scale explosive experiments were conducted in a perlite mine near Socorro, New Mexico. These experiments were a joint effort between Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico Institute Of Mining and Technology, Southern Methodist University, and Defense Nuclear Agency. The purpose of these tests was to measure the changes in the shock wave and seismic coupling as a function of depth of burial and structural setting. The size of the explosive charges ranged from 1 to 68 kg. Over 1150 measurements of velocity and acceleration were made on thirteen experiments using three component sensors. The sensors were placed to maximize the azimuthal coverage as well as to provide data at a variety of ranges from ~1 to 130 m A few far field measurements were made at ranges of ~2Êkm. While the bulk of the measurements were made on the surface, high g accelerometers were placed in one instrumentation borehole to provide some free-field measurements. Preliminary results indicate that significant differences in the amplitudes of signals can occur when the location of the explosive charges are changed by only meters. Part of the observed difference is attributed to variations in the rock immediately adjacent to the charge affecting the shock coupling; and part to the effects of the site characteristics.

The emulsion explosives show non- ideal detonation behavior, and its detonation velocity can be controled by selecting the size and adjusting the quantity of voids involved. To establish the technology to control the detonation characteristics of the emulsion explosives, some experiments have been carried out using resin balloons of five different sizes ranged from O.OSmm to 2.42mm in the average diameter. Detonation velocities of the emulsion explosives containing resin balloons of different size and quantity were determined for the charge diameter of 20-50mm. The detonation velocity at infinite charge diameter was compared with calculated ideal detonation velocity. The emulsion explosives containing large (0.5mm or larger) balloons showed big discrepancy between the measured and calculated detonation velocities, and the fraction of ammonium nitrate reacted in the reaction zone was estimated to be significantly low. It was shown that the reaction zone length was proportional to the size of voids involved. The critical charge diameter was determined for the emulsion explosives containing different resin balloons at the various explosive densities. It is large for the emulsion explosives containing large voids, and it was shown that the critical diameter is proportional to the distance between the void surfaces, not to the void spacing, the distance between the centers of the voids. The reaction rate of the bulk emulsion matrix seems to be the major factor that affects the critical diameter than the specific surface of voids. Good relationship between the critical diameter and the reaction zone length was observed.

In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s substantial resources were devoted to research focused on producing oil from the vast oil shale reserves in the western United States. Since the oil is solidified in the pore space of the shale, extracting it in production level quantities presented monumental technical challenges. Major advances were made in the methods used to extract oil from the shale in large quantities. Extraction methods evolved to culminate in the underground in-situ retorting process. In-situ retorting relied on explosive blasting of the shale to fragment the rock and induce sufficient porosity and permeability for a burn front to propagate through the oil shale. That burn front consumes some of the oil and liberates a substantial portion of it (~30%) for collection and further processing. Oil shale retorting is a blasting intensive process where the entire retort is rubblized in one very large, delay timed blast. Retort 7 in Western Colorado consumed 540,857 lb of slurry explosive to rubblized 348,940 tons of oil shale. Current rock blasting fragmentation predictive capabilities have evolved substantially since these retorts were designed and tested. It is the purpose of this study to simulate the explosively induced fragmentation of oil shale using state-of-the-art computer codes and material models and to infer retort design implications for future development.

Recently, tunnel blasting works near the residential area and existing building are increasing and environmental problems caused by vibration have become serious public concern. In order to solve these problems, blasting works have been conducted with segmented blasting and reduce advance per round. However, with these blasting, work efficiency is not obtained, and regrettably the cost and risk of accident tend to increase. We developed a new controlled tunnel blasting technique with electronic delay detonator. Electronic delay detonator can supply extremely large range of delay period which could not be achieved with conventional pyrotechnical delay detonators. We utilized advantages in initiating hole by hole over entire tunnel face at the same round. Much seismic data obtained from tunnel blasting with conventional detonator was statistically analyzed in order to find average duration time of vibration caused by a single hole initiation. Numerical simulation using sample waves from a single hole initiation was carried out in order to find an optimum delay time which can separate vibration in each hole initiation and without decreasing blast performance. Trial blasting was conducted to examine the correctness of optimum delay time obtained from numerical simulation. This blasting technique was applied to an actual tunnel construction. This tunnel is 2 lane automobile tunnel with a total length of 659 meters and internal cross section of 70 square meters. The purpose of the use of blasting technique on occasion, was the protection of fresh water reservoirs directly above the tunnel, and to keep the effect on local private houses to a minimum. The vibration level against this station was limited under 20 mm/see P.V.V. With this blasting, the tunnel construction was completed without exceeding the limited vibration level, with minimum cost and construction time.

Description of Project: Tamar Group’s civil division was awarded a contract to implode the Sun Hotel, an abandoned 14-story building located along Bat Yam’s coastline, roughly two kilometers south of Tel Aviv, Israel. On Nov. 6, 2012, Tamar Group’s experts positioned explosives in strategic locations of the building, targeting its central pillars, which then caused the building to collapse within seconds. Tamar Group used a relatively small amount of explosives in order to generate a well-controlled blast. This is the largest scale demolition carried out in Israel to date.

The use of explosives to safely fell structures can be traced back over 300 years. Since then, dozens of chemists, inventors, blasters and demolition experts worldwide have played prominent roles in the evolution of what has become the modern-day explosive demolition industry. In America, one of the earliest applications of explosive demolition occurred in response to the great fires of San Francisco, where homes and businesses were blasted with gunpowder in a desperate attempt to create firewalls. Later in the 19th century, inventions such as nitroglycerine, dynamite and blasting caps made structural blasting a safe, efficient alternative to conventional demolition methods. The 20th century brought the first experiments in shaped charge technology, and this, combined with developments in portable seismology and non-electric delay systems, allowed an ever-expanding variety of structures to be explosively felled by demolition experts throughout the country. The 1950s and .60s brought a new wave of commercial structural-blasting entrepreneurs (several of whom are still active today), and their efforts towards improving adjacent-structure protection and public relations beget the felling of large commercial buildings in dense urban environments. By the late 1980s, publicity-driven motives were gaining greater influence in the decision to .implode. various structures, and the transformation of blasting operations into promotional spectator events played a role in several injuries and fatalities. Since that time, however, a renewed sense of responsibility practiced by most blasting firms and project officials has resulted in the safe, successful completion of hundreds of recent endeavors. In sum, what appears today as an efficient, economical - and visually spectacular - way to demolish structures has its roots in developments of the past several centuries

The Army Corps of Engineers completed the Charleroi Lock and Dam in 1932. It is located on the Monongahela river approximately 22 miles (35k) south of Pittsburgh in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. It is comprised of a 420-foot (128m) gated dam, and a 720-foot (219m) by 56-foot (17m) land side lock, which provides for a 16.6 foot (5m) vertical lift.
