This study demonstrates the ability of high-order, shock-capturing methods to simulate detonation wave propagation in right circular cylinders of non-ideal explosives. 2-D axisymmetric, reactive Euler equations were solved for the detonation of the highly non-ideal explosive ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) using a simple pressure-dependent rate law and perfect gas equation of state. The fractional step method was applied to the convection and reaction operators using a 2nd-order Strang splitting. The flow solver consisted of a finite difference scheme where the flux is reconstructed by a modified fifth-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO5-Z) with local characteristic decomposition and local Lax-Friedrichs (LLF) flux splitting. Time integration was performed by a third order total variation diminishing (TVD) Runge-Kutta time discretization method, also known as the strong stability preserving (SSP) method

An engineering study of 2,250 blasting damage claims from 1999 to 2008 in Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Nevada, California, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Arizona and Utah were investigated over the last decade and these investigations determine that blasting ground vibrations damage claims are valid less than 1.3 percent of the time. This study determined that valid blasting damage occurred as a result of impact damage associated with fly rock, air concussion stressing, instantaneous reverse stressing associated with ground vibration and crater zone soil shifting related stressing.

"Comminution (crushing and grinding) of rock materials is energy-intensive and expensive. Mucheffort has been directed to improve the efficiency of conventional milling practice, but relatively littleattention has been given to the potential benefits of blast-induced damage on comminution processes. To help assess this effect, research has been conducted at the IRECO Laboratory and the Generic Center for Comminution at the University of Utah. The objective of this research is to investigate the effect of shockinduced “crack-like” damage on rock properties and subsequent breakage efficiency for three petrologically different rock materials under laboratory conditions. In order to evaluate the effect of shockinduced damage, a quantitative measure of rock damage is needed. For this purpose, a scalar variable (0) is proposed."

The following is a detailed description of the blasting procedures used in the successful demolition of the Stave River bridge, Mission, British Columbia, Canada. This highway bridge spans a highly sensitive salmon-spawning river. Demolition of the bridge took place in a high liability situation in close proximity to sensitive structures. The new highway bridge carrying an exposed 150mm diameter gas line was located only 1.5 meters away. The bridge piers were blasted only seven meters from overhead power lines. Control of blast vibration, flyrock, and underwater overpressure was critical to the success of the operation. Electrical sequential blasting was used to ensure that blast vibration on the new bridge structure was kept below 50mm per second.

As a result of thisdeviation, 60 kilogram (165 millimetre diameter) and 103 kilogram (203 millimetre diameter) explosive charges are routinely detonated beyond ore/waste contact zones. Consequently, there follows a reduction in finished stope wall stability and an increase in ore dilution."

The paper presents the vibration and sound emission measurement campaigns carried out in 2007 in preparation for the Ceneri-Basistunnel construction. We also present the vibration measurement campaign conducted during the construction of the Zimmerberg-Basistunnel. Both tunnels form an integral part of the Swiss Federal Railway Company Neue Eisenbahn Alpentransversale project (NEAT). This strategic project comprised the construction of several new tunnels. Its aim is the improvement of the existing infrastructure. The improved infrastructure will be able to accommodate a larger volume of railway traffic that is also crossing the Alps at higher speeds. The construction of the Ceneri-Basistunnel commenced in 2006. Both the Zimmerberg-Basistunnel and the Ceneri- Basistunnel are located underneath densely populated areas. Therefore, noise and vibration emissions have to be kept to a minimum and must not exceed applicable codes of practice. In order to identify the most appropriate blasting strategy for the yet to be constructed Ceneri-Basistunnel, blasting trials were conducted. The paper presents the findings of these trials and identifies ways to reduce both noise and vibration emissions from blasting. The construction of the first phase of the Zimmerberg-Basistunnel took place between 1999 and 2003. While the first phase is already in operation, the construction of the second phase has been postponed (commencement originally due in 2007). The Zimmerberg-Basistunnel connects the outskirts of Zürich with the city centre. As the tunnel site was not located close to the surface near populated grounds, no special measures were needed to reduce the noise emissions from blasting. However during the construction of the tunnel, the vibration emissions from blasting were monitored on more than 50 locations on the surface. The paper presents the analysis of some of the data. An emphasis is placed on the appropriate synopsis and presentation of data for documentation purposes.

Over the past few years, our laboratory has been investigating the loading on vehicles due to the detonation of buried explosives. We have been using target plates to represent the bottom of the vehicles that were being subject to the forces from the detonating explosives. Parameters shown to be important in the blast loading were type of soil, stand off distance (distance from the surface of the soil to the bottom of the target plate), and depth of burial (distance of the charge center of gravity to the sand surface). We conducted over the first year of our work a large number of tests which looked at the impulse being applied to the plates as a function of depth of burial, stand off distance, and type of soil. Of the three parameters we found stand off distance to be most important, depth of burial to be the next most important parameter, with type of soil least important. We also found that impulse could be scaled with explosive size quite accurately and that results (for impulse) were quite repeatable from one test to the next.

To effectively evaluate property damage that is claimed to have been caused by blasting activities and in order to lay the proper foundation to build the best legal defense, identification of the actual causation for the damages are necessary. For the past twenty years, engineering personnel from VCE, Inc. (previously Vibration Control Engineering, Inc.) have been evaluating claimed blasting damages with pre and post blast inspections, with analysis of seismic levels, blasting amounts at given distances, and with other engineering considerations. In addition to these evaluations, they have also documented other causes for damages which are of the types that are often claimed as blasting damage.

This paper describes several applications of quantitative risk assessment in the management of commercial explosives operations. The Institute of Makers of Explosives’ (IME) quantitative risk assessment software modeling program IMESAFR was used for this analysis. Modeled activities include the unloading of a ship at port, locating a safe haven, and dealing with encroachment on a manufacturing facility. The layout of actual explosives sites were used for the analysis. The risk of fatality is analyzed and shown it can be used to make informed operational decisions for each activity. A study of the risks to individuals from activities involving commercial explosives compared to individual risks from other daily activities or exposures is also presented.

"Commercial explosives being a heterogeneous mixture of many chemical compounds in prefixed proportion, their velocity of detonation (VOD) may vary from batch to batch, due to variations in the proportion of the chemical composition and process parameters even within their tolerance limits. Inherent limitations of measuring methods and human variations during measurement also add to the variation in VOD values determined practically. Therefore, it is customary to define a range of VOD values rather than a fixed value of VOD for a particular explosive.Variations in VOD values of four commercial permitted explosives in India were evaluated under open unconfined condition using Dautriche method and a resistance wire method based continuous VOD meter. Comparative evaluation of VOD values of selected explosives were aimed to check the relative effectiveness of continuous VOD measurement of small diameter cartridged permitted explosives using cheaper co-axial wire instead of recommended costly VOD rods along with the continuous VOD meter. Results of evaluation revealed that continuous VOD of commercial small diameter cartridged explosives could be determined using cheaper co-axial resistance cable with comparatively better accuracy than the most commonly used Dautriche method."

The King George V (KGV) Shaft forms part of MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL) Works Contract 703 extension of the underground West Island Line on Hong Kong Island. The Shaft and the associated adit was the sole access to excavate the running tunnels. Originally during the Detailed Design stage, it was concluded that blasting was not feasible at the KGV Shaft due to the close proximity of sensitive receivers in the form of residential buildings, electrical cables and hospitals. As a result, the Contractor planned to excavate the Shaft using mechanical means with a programme time of seven months. The Contractor appointed a Sub-contractor to analyse the feasibility of excavating the Shaft by blasting. The Sub-contractor reviewed the proposal and recommended the use of an innovative blasting technique that had never been previously employed in Hong Kong. The Sub-contractor recommended the Shaft be blasted using DetNet electronic delay detonator technology, manufactured by AEL Mining Services in South Africa, with an initial 1.5m depth of water ballast covering the blast face. The electronic delay detonators provided initiation accuracy to ensure there would be no overlap between sequentially detonating blastholes. The water ballast makes use of the effect of energy lost through the shock front causing the water to break up into droplets creating a spray dome resulting in the attenuation of the energy imparted into the surrounding rock mass. Various tests have demonstrated that both the maximum overpressure and impulse density are significantly reduced when water of a minimum depth is in direct contact with detonating explosives. This innovative blasting technique reduced the excavation programme by three months, saved HK$5 million in direct costs and totally mitigated the impacts on the public and other stakeholders nearby the KGV Shaft. Peak Particle Velocities (vibrations) rarely exceeded 2-3mm/sec (0.08-0.12in/sec) at a distance of 30-40m (98-131ft) from the blast location and air overpressure levels were reduced below the Hong Kong target level of 120dBL. In total, 24 blasts were fired with an average advance of 1.6m (5.25ft) with an average powder factor of 2.03kg/m3 (0.127lb/ft3) to 1.84 kg/m3 (0.114lb/ft3). The initiation pattern had 5ms between sequentially detonating blastholes and 20ms between adjoining rings.

WipFrag systems I, II and III have become the world standard in photoanalysis systems to measure particle sizes. Mines, quarries and excavating contractors can now easily measure blast results and track the progress of optimization efforts. This technology was developed and evolved ~to allow automatic measurements of the size distribution of particles on moving conveyors, in truck boxesand on crusher feeds. Production machinery can now be controlled by photoanalysis results and multiple cameras allow various locations to be monitored by a single system. Blast designs can, be monitored on a shot by shot basis. Changes in delay times, explosives, patterns and hole sizes can be quickly evaluated. Along with this measurement capability has come a heightened awareness of the importance of “optimum size” and uniformity of particles for lowest cost production and material handling efficiency. In the past, savings in the “drill / blast” cycle of the operation were sometimes overshadowed by downstream production costs related to fragmentation. Now total production costs can be compared with fragmentation sizes, which will immediately show the trend towards optimum size for economical production. No cost reduction program can be complete without this critical information.

When blasting complaints come, as an industry we often immediately look to the ground vibration as the source of the trouble. Often times we overlook or place less emphasis on the collected air overpressure data. Air blast like ground vibration is an undesirable side effect of blasting and can produce considerable structural response.

This research was performed on the quarry that will be opened to produce aggregates and rock filling material at Catalagzi region at Zonguldak providence. Excavations will be done by drilling and blasting. However, there are some structures which can be adversely affected by blasting at the quarry. These structures are a methane exploration drill hole and a house at the distances of 340 m and 390 m, respectively. The one of the main goals of this study is to perform a preliminary assessment of possible damage effect of ground vibrations induced by blasting on these structures by risk analysis based on ground vibration measurements.
