The objective of the programme is to establish and maintain a nationally consistent geochemical drainage database. Towards this end systematic surveys have been conducted since 1973. To date more than 200 surveys have been completed to the required standards, representing 180 000 sites and covering about 2 100 000 km2 throughout Canada

In coal-fired power stations coal is ground to a fine powder and then transported pneumatically at 25-30 m/s velocity to remote burners. Wear of the conveying pipework is a well recognised problem and traditional lining materials are Nihard and basalt. In many cases these are being replaced by alumina tiles in order to improve life and reduce the frequency of replacement. A programme of laboratory testing of candidate aluminas with AIO, contents between 85% and 99-5% has been undertaken and the results compared with field experience. This gives confidence in the erosion tests, which were designed to replicate most of the field conditions. However, it has not proved possible to draw correlations between the laboratory erosion rates and any of the materials’ bulk properties. SEM, TEM and microanalysis studies have therefore been made in order to look for microstructural aspects that could be influencing erosion rates and it has been shown that intercrystalline cohesion, the matrix phase and porosity appear to have most influence on wear performance. It is necessary to quantify these microstructural parameters if reliable erosion performance is to be obtained. Wheal Jane, situated between Truro and the Carnmenellis granite, is under development by Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., as a tin producer. The main or B lode comprises a complex cassiterite-sulphide ore located in shear zones along the footwall of the lowest of a series of porphyry dykes (elvans) which strike ENE and dip 35° north. Minor mineralisation follows other elvan contacts and sets of later steeply dipping fractures. The localisation and overall geometry of the deposit is explained in terms of the complex structural geology of the Lower Palaeozoic metasediments and the shape and manner of emplacement of the invading Hercynian granite of Cornwall. Variations in the thickness and grade of the orebody, and in the nature of the mineralisation, are shown to be structurally controlled by undulations of the footwall contact of the B elvan. "Geological controls and constraints in space and time define the milieu of the nickel deposits of Southern Africa. Primary, magmatic deposits are of two types, e.g. synvolcanic or syntectonic deposits confined to certain orogenic domains, and those related to intracratonic, post-orogenic magmatism, e.g. the Great Dyke, the Bushveld Complex and the Insizwa intrusion. Epigenetic and supergene deposits form a separate, unrelated group and are of minor economic importance.The metallogenic evolution of syntectonic nickel deposits is particularly well illustrated in the Zimbabwean Province, where the relationships between Archaean greenstone development and nickel mineralization are best illustrated. Volumetrically subordinate, nickel-poor greenstones in the 3500 m.y. old Sebakwian Group are followed by more common komatiite development in the Lower Greenstones (3000 m.y.), and, finally, by very significant komatiites with important nickel mineralization in the 2700 m.y. old Upper Greenstones of the Bulawayan Group. Comparable nickel mineralization is not known in the Raapvaal Province, in spite of ubiquitous komatiitic magmatism of the Onverwacht Group (3500 m.y.) and other greenstone sequences. No komatiitic rocks younger than about 3200 m.y. are known in this region, orogenic activity in the Kaapvaal tectonic province having ceased at about 3100 m.y., whereas the Zimbabwe Province remained tectonically active until at least 2600 m.y.The tectonic environment, host-rock petrology and mode of emplacement, as well as some details of the nickel mineralization, are the parameters employed to classify the Southern African magmatic nickel deposits. A rating of the deposits is introduced that reflects the original resources of the deposit, its average nickel content, its mining history and potential to facilitate ready comparison with and assessment of the nickel deposits listed in the classification, as well as some important nickel deposits worldwide."

Stream-sediment sampling undertaken to define the regional geochemistry of northern Scotland is described with particular reference to the errors involved. The region is underlain essentially by Moine schists, Caledonian granites and Old Red Sandstone sediments, which are generally characterized by low geochemical relief. Factors in the secondary environment obscure the relationship between trace-metal concentrations in stream sediments and bedrock geology. Investigation of sampling and sample preparation methods indicates that the -100-mesh material is the optimum size fraction for the regional survey of this area: it provides adequate geochemical contrast: it reduced the incidence of spurious high values in the samples investigated and it is available in amounts which are adequate for all the analyses required. Grinding samples improves precision and reduces the preferential volatilisation of metals coprecipitated with hydrous manganese and iron oxides for the optical emission spectroscopic method used initially. A study of the dispersion of metals in the drainage system of an area of Pb-Ba-Mo mineralisation and an area of U-Pb mineralisation, respectively, indicates that a sampling interval of 1 per 2 km2 based on second- or third-order streams is adequate to define anomalous metal concentrations. Regional variation can also be represented on the same interval. Modifications to the sampling procedure to reduce the effects of the secondary environment are complicated by the primary association of Mn and Fe with mineralisation in the area. The ratio of analytical and sampling error to regional variance shows that procedural precision is adequate to prepare regional geochemical maps of northern Scotland, with the exception of Cr, Cu at low concentrations and Pb.

The options for designing slopes in complex geological conditions are reviewed. It is shown that modelling, especially numerical modelling, allows a degree of analysis that cannot otherwise be achieved. Examples are presented of how numerical modelling can be used to investigate fundamental aspects of rock mass behaviour. It is demonstrated that an important consequence of change in scale is that the mechanisms of failure also change. The complex failure of the footwall slope at Aznalcollar, a large open-pit mine in southern Spain, is discussed. Numerical modelling with UDEC (universal distinct-element code) has allowed the realistic simulation of displacements measured in the field

Thermodynamical data of importance in connection with copper smelting have been reviewed and a collection of the most reliable information is presented in Tables XXV-XXVIII and Figs. 67 and 6 8 (folding plate). The data given in these figures and tables consists of (i) graphs and equations showing the variations in the temperature range 0-2000°C. of the standard free energies of formation of most of the oxides and sulphides met with in copper smelting (Table XXV and Fig. 67); (ii) equations showing the temperature variation of the free energy of formation of iron silicates (Table XXVI); (iii) graphs showing the variation with temperature in the range 1000°-1600°C. of the standard free energies of the principal reactions occurring in the smelter (Fig. 6 8 ); (iv) the standard heats of formation at 1200°C. of the main iron and copper compounds and gases reacting in the smelter (Table XXVII); (v) the standard heats of reaction at 1200°C. of a few of the reactions for which the free energy relationships were given in Fig. 6 8 (Table XXVIII). The data presented are discussed in more detail.

A comparison was made of three methods for determining the contributions of true flotation and entrainment during batch flotation tests. In the first method size-by-size recoveries are measured in both the presence and the absence of a collector, a frother being present in both tests. In the second method the mass of solids and water recovered after a chosen time of flotation is varied by changing the rate of froth removal and the depth of the froth. The third method uses a transfer factor to describe the classification of solids and water, and hence the changes in the composition of the pulp, during a single flotation test. Batch flotation tests were carried out with artificial mixtures of pyrite and gangue, the amount of floated material recovered being calculated according to each of the three methods. The discrepancies betweeen the calculated amounts are analysed in terms of the assumptions that are made for the various methods and the most suitable conditions for the application of each method are identified

A comparative study was made of an untreated and a heated haematite ore and a sinter produced from a feed consisting of 100% ore, to study the influence on reduction behaviour of sinter bonding phases such as SFCA (silico-ferrite of calcium and alumina). Under low-temperature reduction conditions the order of increasing reducibility followed that of increasing porosity and surface area but under similar conditions at 900 degrees C the sinter exhibited higher reducibility than the ores even though the total porosity and chemical reducibility of the individual phases were lower. This behaviour can be explained in terms of the higher total porosity of the natural ore at low temperatures and the higher level of fine pores in the sinter at high temperatures due to the presence of SFCA, which acts to support the fine (c.0.1 micrometre) pores created by the reduction process. This leads to the conclusion that the main role of SFCA in sinter during high-temperature reduction is to maintain a high level of fine porosity. Some implications of this work for granule design and sintering practice are discussed

Discussion by A.C. Fitzgerald of the paper, published in Trans. IMM A, vol.104, 1995, p.B121-B135, is presented together with the authors' response. Fitzgerald points out a number of problems with the idea of mineralising fluids leaving no trace in the large volumes of rock traversed before depositing all minerals of value in a particular horizon or rock type with which the required isobaric or isothermic surface also coincides. He suggested that in the case of the Rooiberg tin deposits, the Lebowa Granites may be batholiths that reached the surface and were capped by sheets of their own volcanics. The authors agree that they had considered a possible syngenetic origin for the stratabound deposits, explain that no conclusive evidence for this could be found, discuss the relative ages of the sediments and volcanics of the Rooiberg Fragment and explain the role of its low-intensity deformation and flat dip in the coincidence of an isobaric-isothermic surface with the lithological stratification

Before regulations governing the work on the mines, it was not uncommon in the Rand for a miner to die within a period of 2-3 years as the result of exposure to dust. This paper considers mine and tunnel conditions promoting silicosis and measures to avoid dust exposure in the Rand, South Africa.The relationship between blasting and lung lesions is explored. Evidence is presented that improved working conditions and lowered dust levels reduce the incidence of silicosis.

Almost all the presently viable nickel reserves in the Yilgarn Block contain nickel in a sulphide phase. Both volcanic peridotite- associated (VPA) deposits and intrusive dunite-associated (IDA) deposits are characterized by massive, matrix and disseminated sulphides (typically, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, magnetite and other spinels), though in the IDA deposits the volume of disseminated sulphides is far greater than that in the VPA deposits. Potentially all geophysical techniques have application in the direct detection of these deposits'gravity for the detection of the dense massive and matrix ore; magnetics for the detection of magnetite and pyrrhotite in the ores; electromagnetics for the detection of the massive and matrix ore; and induced polarization for the detection of disseminated and to some extent matrix and massive ore. In practice the application of geophysical techniques is limited to a varying extent by (1) the relatively small size of an economic accumulation of sulphides, particularly the VPA deposits, (2) the extreme depth of weathering and lack of outcrop on the Yilgarn Block and (3) the abundance of geological noise or anomalous responses caused by sources other than economic mineralization.

Respect for mining in Botswana is long-standing. This article looks at Africa's most transparent mining regime and some of its ambitious plans. Botswana's mining industry value is forecast to average 5.2% growth from 2014-2018 with solid growth for the diamond sector and acceleration of coal production. Respect for the country's mining regime is maintained in the Fraser Institute 2014 annual survey where Botswana occupies the 26th position of 122 administrations. The compositions of olivine, pyroxene and chromite from the Proterozoic ultramafic complex are analagous to those of cumulate ultramafic rocks of tholeiitic origin, suggesting that the parent magma may have been tholeiitic rather than komatiitic. The complex contains economically significant Ni-Cu sulphide mineralisation. The high sulphide/silicate ratio is best explained in terms of the segregation of sulphides from a large volume of magma, of which all but the ultramafic cumulate fraction has since been eroded. Platinum-group minerals that have been identified include sperrylite, moncheite, native platinum, froodite, merenskyite, michenerite and Pd-rich pentlandite lamellae exsolved from pyrrhotite. They are characteristically found in close association with chalcopyrite, either along the contacts between hydrosilicate and sulphide grains or in cracks within pentlandite and chalcopyrite, which may also be intergrown with galena. Crystallisation from a Cu-rich residual magmatic liquid also enriched in Pt, Pd, As, Sb, Bi, Te, Zn and Pb is postulated.

The fixed-time locked-cycle grinding test is employed to simulate the industrial closed grinding circuit on the laboratory scale. A mathematical algorithm for 'cyclewise' computer simulation of the locked-cycle test has been derived and used to study an idealised laboratory-scale model of a closed ball-mill circuit. Since the various new techniques of automation and computing have enabled vast numbers of mineralogical observations of relatively small samples to be made cheaply and rapidly, the statistical assessment of these measurements has become of vital importance. Much of the theory and most of the procedures of sampling that are used in the mineral industry are based on Gaussian statistics, but modern measuring techniques show that many mineralogical parameters do not necessarily follow the Gaussian distribution function. Consequently, it has become necessary to examine the application of other, more suitable statistical methods in order to derive the maximum amount of useful information from the examination of mineralogical samples. Some of the errors that can be introduced by the use of incorrect distribution functions are discussed and the value of determining the function that is appropriate to the particular parameter that is being measured is shown. Examples are provided of non-Gaussian distribution functions in mineralogical materials that were encountered during prospecting and during mineral treatment operations: a Canadian uranium ore, a Thai tin ore, and gold ore tailings.

Equations for calculating the parameters of controlled blasting (burden and spacing of boreholes and weight of the bottom charge) are derived and analysed on the basis of empirical values and made more precise through incorporation of the properties of the rock being blasted and explosive applied. For the success of controlled blasting the correct choice of the blasthole diameter/charge diameter ratio is critical. This relation is defined as the coefficient of radial decoupling of the charge; it is recommended that it is chosen to be between 3 and 3.5. Analysis of smooth blasting, cushion blasting and presplitting indicates that cushion blasting is a less destructive alternative to smooth blasting, but it has a slightly higher blasthole consumption and limited possibilities of use. There are definite economic advantages to controlled blasting, especially in rock masses of low and medium strength
