"Industrias Peñoles S.A. de C.V. (Peñoles) is a private enterprise and is the main silver producer in Mexico. Peñoles is a Mexican Company, and since 1887 ranks as one of Mexico's main natural resources industrial groups.Peñoles Mining Group includes six operating Companies producing mainly gold, silver, lead, and zinc. All mines are underground operations, and the ore is milled in ten concentrator plants near the mine sites. Plant throughputs range from 150,000 to 810,000 tonnes per year.This paper gives a general view of the Peñoles Mining Group, their type of deposits, mining methods, and mineral processing work practices.The paper also discusses some of Peñoles work philosophies and measures being adopted to become more competitive. Due to the small size of the deposits, the mining methods used and size of the concentrator plants are somehow different to those typically seen in large deposits. Brought into production in late 1969, the plant treats an average of 30,000 tons per day of an ore that contains 0.130% copper and 0.030% molybdenum.The operation is divided into six areas of responsibility, namely the mine, mill, plant, accounting, industrial relations and purchasing /stores departments.The purchasing and warehousing area handled in excess of 11,000 items valued at $31,000,000 in 198J. Over and above this, the warehousing area issued in excess of 74,000 line items valued at $15,000,000 during that same period.Materials Management- DefinitionWhat is meant by the term ""Materials Management""? Reference to the dictionary will reveal that a material is ""that of which anything is composed or may be constructed; the tools, instruments, implements', etc. for doing something"". Management is defined as ""the act, or manner of managing; the skillful use of means to accomplish a purpose"". Presumably combining these words defines materials management.Of greater importance are the materials managers who will carry out the function. At Brenda Mines Ltd., all employees and suppliers contribute to the materials management function. Each has a specialized knowledge of the materials used in his field. Each has a different view concerning the use and description of the same material. The key is to focus this knowledge so as to make the materials management system useful to everyone."

"The original grinding circuit at East Malartic consisted of two 8 by 8 C.A.C. mills in closed circuit with two 72 inch Akins Classifiers and an 8 by 10 secondary mill in closed circuit with two 48 inch duplex classifiers. With this circuit, we experienced a drastic drop in tonnage from one month to another, due to variations in the hardness of the ore. The first step to overcome this difficulty was made by increasing the critical speeds of the mills from 78% to 82%. This resulted in an increase in the secondary mill throughput; but, when the change was made on the primary mills no increase was obtained.The drastic drops in tonnage were still experienced and through working with Allis Chalmers the 8 by 10 mill was converted to a rod mill and the two 8 by 8 n1ills to secondary mills. This change eliminated the two 72 inch Atkins classifiers and the scoops on all the mills, since the 48 inch Akins classifiers sands could then be fed by gravity to the secondary mills through feed pipes.The rod mill and secondary mill discharges were fed to a common pump box using 5 by 5 S.R.L.'s running at 1085 R.P.M. with a twenty-five foot head. When this was done the pumping costs jumped from $105. 00 for 6 months to $1050. 00 in one month, or from 0. 0004 to 2. 75 cents a ton milled. Failure to meet quality objectives during the execution of any industrial project has lasting negative impacts on facility life cycle performance. Cost overruns, schedule delays, and rework are characteristics of project quality issues that arise during the project. Commissioning and start-up problems, low production, production bottlenecks, breakdowns and the necessity for operational work-arounds are characteristics of project quality issues that appear after project completion. Risks such as production facility downtime, shortened equipment life, and potential HSE violations must be clearly identified and addressed during project planning phases. Appropriate Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) focus must be placed on identified high-risk areas. In order to be effective, quality systems must be flexible, non-confrontational, consistent, and adaptable to projects of any size ? from capital mega-projects to small maintenance projects. All project participants must be aligned in how they are approaching quality and the difference between QA and QC must be clear to everyone on the project. Emphasis must be placed on QA activities to minimize project cost, reduce rework, manage change, and reduce the production facility operational risk. QA is focused on the work processes used to generate the design and confirming that the processes are present and being followed. Issues in the work processes guarantee that the output drawings and specifications will be less than optimal. The identification and monitoring of quality-critical processes provides a focus for QA activities. QC activities are then used to generate proof that the project was implemented correctly and become a key part of the turnover.

Light metals, most commonly aluminum, magnesium and titanium, and alloys containing them, are used in many industrial applications where lightness, hardness, ductility and resistance to corrosion are needed. However, these metals and their alloys can be potential ignition sources in underground coal mines. There have been documented cases in the past where coal mine explosions have been attributed to firedamp/coal dust ignitions involving light metals or their alloys. When light metals and their alloys are brought into contact with oxygen bearing material, such as iron oxide (rust) in the presence of heat, then a "thermite" reaction can occur. This source of heat can be generated from frictional contact or from merely a glancing blow. This paper outlines the hazards associated with light alloys, how to address the hazard and regulatory aspects.

"A critical element, as the term has come to be used, provides essential properties to a modern engineered material and is subject to supply risk. The rare-earth elements became perhaps the most prominent of the critical elements in recent years because of their important uses in permanent magnets, advanced lighting, and military materials; the geographic concentration of production in China; and the dramatic run-up in prices in 2010-2011 followed by price collapse between 2011 and 2016. Yet criticality extends beyond the rare earths. What is critical depends on your perspective – who and where you are, and when you ask. This paper reviews the many perspectives on, or faces of, critical elements. It compares and contrasts perspectives of industry (General Electric), national or regional manufacturing sectors (Japan, European Union), emerging energy technologies (as seen by U.S. Department of Energy and, separately, Joint Research Centre of the European Commission) and the world as a whole (as evaluated by academics). This comparison reveals a diversity of not only perspectives but also methodologies and time frames of concern.INTRODUCTIONRare-earth elements appeared prominently in the news in 2010 and 2011 because of the dramatic increase in their prices; their important uses in permanent magnets, advanced lighting, and military materials combined with the geographic concentration of production in China, which reduced export quotas significantly. Rare earths became the most prominent of what have become known as critical elements or materials – that is, those that provide essential properties to modern engineered materials and yet are subject to supply risks.Yet criticality, the state of being both essential and subject to supply risks, extends beyond rare earths. What is critical depends on your perspective. This paper begins by reviewing a little history and presenting a general conceptual framework from which to think about critical materials. It then reviews the many perspectives on, or faces of, critical elements – corporate, national, and global, as well several that focus on emerging energy technologies. The paper concludes with thoughts on what to do to mitigate the potentially negative effects of the supply risks associated with criticality."

"The fluidized bed at Division Ministro Hales (DMH) division of Codelco in Calama, Chile is currently the largest operating roaster for partial roasting of arsenic rich copper concentrates. The roaster converts the Mina Ministro Hales (MMH) enargite rich (Cu3AsS4) copper concentrates into calcine with a low arsenic content that is suitable for mixing with other copper concentrates feeding a flash furnace. The plant sets a new standard for the processing of arsenic rich concentrates, both from the quality of the calcine as well as the environmental performances. The process technology and expertise are based on the solid practical experience of treating arsenic rich concentrates from both the Boliden smelter and Outotec.The partial roasting process is located next to the mine and concentrator and includes a sulphuric acid plant with auxiliary equipment. The produced calcine has an arsenic content significantly below target and the residual sulphur meets the requirement of the flash furnace. The plant operates with high efficiency cyclones resulting in a low amount of calcine passing to the hot electrostatic precipitator (HESP). The small flow of HESP calcine dust can be combined with the low arsenic calcine and still meet the flash furnace feed arsenic requirements.SO2 formed during roasting is converted into sulphuric acid, while volatized arsenic is recovered in the wet gas cleaning section of the acid plant along with a large proportion of antimony present in the MMH concentrate. Arsenic is stabilized as calcium arsenate and sent to disposal at a specially prepared site.The present production rate (September/October 2015) is close to or higher than the original maximum design capacity of the plant.INTRODUCTIONMineralogyThe mineralogy of an ore and concentrate is important, since there is a direct link between roasting performance and concentrate mineralogy. The MMH concentrate has a good combination of minerals that makes the roasting process efficient and flexible. The main minerals are pyrite, enargite and chalcocite (Figure 1). The inert content is about 15% and consists mainly of silicate and alumina based minerals. The lead content is very low and this is desirable, since the presence of even a small amount of lead will cause a substantial increase of sintering during roasting."

"Girth welding operations represent the rate-limiting step in pipeline construction. A joint industry-university program was set up to establish the field welding characteristics of large-diameter, high-strength line pipe.Theoretical work carried out at the University of Waterloo showed that pipe wall thickness and joint misalignment prior to welding has a marked influence on the lifting stresses acting on the root pass of girth welds. Pipe diameter and pipe ovality had negligible effects. Super-position of lifting and residual stress (caused by the fusion welding operation) highlighted regions of the weld bead most susceptible to hydrogen-induced cracking.The field welding characteristics of 1219-mm-diameter, 13.72-mm-wt Grade 483 line pipe were evaluated using a specially designed test rig. The principal test variables were lift height, delay time after root pass deposition, preheat temperature, pipe composition and joint misalignment prior to welding. For any given life, preheat and joint misalignment prior to welding had the most significant effect on cracking tendency.The output of this program has industrial significance and illustrates the beneficial features of university-industry collaboration.IntroductionField welding operations comprise the rate-limiting step during pipeline construction. Crack-free girth welds must be made in a wide range of weather conditions and consequently the field weldability of line pipe compositions directly affects pipeline integrity and construction economics.Pipe-laying practice comprises root bead deposition followed by a skidding operation involving lifting (or lowering) the pipe length onto skid s so that the next pipe length can be aligned prior to welding. Consider pipeline construction using 24.4-m lengths of 1219-mm-diameter , 13.72-mm-wt Grade 483 pipe weighing approximately 10,000 kg. Skidding involves loading a 3-mm-thick root bead by moving the free end of the pipe through vertical distances of up to 700 mm . The likelihood of cracking in these circumstances depends on the inherent crack susceptibility of the pipe composition employed, on the hydrogen content of the deposited weld metal and on how well the joint handles the external stressing caused byskidding."

"Since its startup in 1975, the Rabbit Lake mill has been modified (0 process both increased tonnage and higher grade ore. Ore initially came from the Rabbit Lake pit . In 1985, a major mill expansion was commissioned to allow treatment of B-zone pit ore, which is mineralogically and metallurgically different fromRabbit Lake pit ore.Mill modifications, and the changing ore characteristics and processing targets which made them necessary, are described. Mill LocationThe mill complex, shown in Figure I, comprised of milling facilities, acid plant, power generation , warehouse and administration offices, is located approximately 1.5 Ian south of the Rabbit Lake pit, and about 8 Ian southwest of the B-zone open pit mine.Original Milling CircuitOre feed to the mill commenced June 10, 1975. The mill was designed to process 1500 tonnes per day , 483 000 tonnes per year with an average grade of O.44OJo Ups and an annual production of 2000 tonnes UPs' Run-of-mine ore was dumped directly onto a 60 em square opening grizzly. Oversize was broken with an Ingersoll-Rand hydrauli c rock breaker. Minus 60 cm ore was fed to a 6 m diameter by 1.8 m long Hardinge semi-autogenous (SAG) grate discharge mill. Mill discharge was screened over a Tyler double-deck vibrating screen, with screen oversize returned to the SAG mill feed chute via conveyor belt. Screen undersize (minus 2.4 mm) was pumped to 51 cm diameter Krebs cyclones in closed circuit with the SAG mill. Cyclone overflow (about 50% minus 74 micron) was thickened to 55% solids in a 30 m diameter neutral thickener .Thickened pulp was stored in two mechanically-agitated wood stave tanks (5.5 m diameter by 6 m high), to which sulphuric acid was added to obtain a pH range of 1.5 to 2.0. The fmalleaching was carried out in five more identical tanks. Sulphuric acid and sodium chlorate were used to maintain a pH of 1.5 and a terminal emf of -450 to -500 mV. Steam sparge was utilized to obtain a temperature of 45°C."

"The flotation of fine minerals less than 10 µm in size is an age old challenge spanning both the precious metal and industrial mineral sectors across a range of commodities. This problem has been brought into sharper focus by the emergence of the practice of fine grinding of flotation feed to effect better liberation of the targeted minerals. However, the ability of conventional flotation cells to effectively float the liberated fines remains questionable. In order to overcome this problem, Gold Ore postulates the “Bringing the Mountain to Mohamed” hypothesis which comprises the steps of gas nucleation on particle surfaces, aggregation of particles and levitation of aggregates. Testing of this hypothesis at Mintek, South Africa, showed a ~180% increase in the Kelsall kfast factor coupled with a projected recovery improvement of ~4 % for the Mach Reactor case coupled with a final concentrate grade of ~2 times that of conventional flotation. These fundamentals were then extrapolated to plant scale with Mach Reactors installed on the flotation feed at Platmin’s Tailings Scavenger Plant (TSP) with the objective of scavenging the fine minerals lost to tailings by the main plant. This paper details the theory, pilot plant results as well as key aspects of the full scale plant design supplemented by operational plant observations after commissioning. This game changing application is regarded as being pivotal to future flotation plant design whilst providing the technology leverage required for the survival of mineral operations in an economically unfriendly environment.INTRODUCTION - THE CONUNDRUM OF FINE PARTICLE FLOTATION“If the mountain won't come to Mohamed then Mohamed must go to the mountain” is an age old saying written into the book of proverbs in 1670. Legend has it that Mohamed promised his people that he would summon a mountain to come over to him so that he could offer up his prayers from its summit. After numerous attempts at moving the mountain went in vain, Mohamed, quite unabashed, said “Well if the mountain will not come to Mohamed, then Mohamed will go to the Mountain.” In this analogy, Mohamed is a fine particle <10 µm and the mountain is a bubble within a flotation system. The age old challenge is how to bring these two together to achieve attachment?"

"Sample drops were evaporated on Lexan disks on which fission tracks were etched and counted after neutron irradiation. [U] = 0.01 ppb could be measured. This method is rapid, cheap, simple and accurate when sufficient control and checking is possible, but several types of error were encountered in its use, the natures and sources of which were investigated but not always determined. The most troublesome were ""annealing"" processes which sometimes altered the fission tracks so that they were not fully revealed, or acquired varying appearances, after etching. Several different annealing processes seemed to exist and seemed to be produced by alteration of the Lexan surface by dissolved components in the solutions and, perhaps, by radiation and local heating during neutron irradiation. The appearances of the etched tracks varied with the natures of the droplet solutions even when annealing appeared to be absent, and for this reason, standards are best prepared by additions of known amounts of U to sample solutions. Contamination of sample droplets by U-containing dust from the air is best avoided by preparing the disks away from areas where other U-analysis is being carried out.IntroductionFission tracks are regions of radiation dam age produced in solids by the fission of atoms such as 235U. They can be enlarged to sizes visible through optical microscopes by etching surfaces through which they pass with solvents in which the solids are slightly soluble. A sample to be analyzed for U may be placed against a film of a solid of negligible uranium concentration (the track detector) and irradiated with thermal neutrons in a nuclear reactor to fission 235U. The track detector is then etched and the number of tracks per unit area, ?, which is proportional to the uranium concentration of the sample, c, and the neutron do se, n, is found by counting through a microscope. Uranium in solutions ha s been measured by evaporating drops on track detectors, irradiating, etching and determining the number of tracks per drop, T(2,3,4,5). Extensive test s of this method are reported here."

Originally the focus of Deak Resources Corporation Business Plan was to establish a method for treating small gold and possibly base metal mineral deposits located in the Kirkland Lake - Noranda area of Northeastern Ontario, Northwestern Quebec at a central treatment facility. Since the establishment of this original business plan in 1988 other processing options have availed themselves for handling the base metal ores off site at a central facility which may preclude their processing at Deak.The site selected for the Deak processing plant was Kerr Addison's Virginiatown operation. At the time this property was acquired from the Receiver following Golden Shield Resources' Bankruptcy in 1989 the mill had been processing in the order of 1, 100 SDT per calendar day through one processing module; a module originally designed to process 1,500 SDT/day of a free milling gold ore. This tonnage level however had not been achieved since 1966 when an average throughput of 1481 SDT per calendar day was recorded.In order to realize Deak's overall Business Plan it would be necessary to expand the mills processing capabilities to provide:(1) A 2200 SOT per day circuit capable of processing a free milling, medium work index gold ore;(2) a 1 ,000 SDT per day flotation and/or cyanidation circuit capable of processing refractory gold bearing materials containing refractory minerals (i.e. copper) that should be removed prior to cyanidation; and possibly(3) a 1200 to 1500 SDT/day base metal circuit capable of processing the broad range of Deaks' Base Metal Property ores. If this circuit were introduced it would be completed in two tonnage phases.Further, it was recognized when operations resumed under Deak in 1990 that the existing tailings dam was suitable for, and had sufficient capacity for additional gold tailings with necessary physical modifications and changes in disposal techniques (including the construction of containment storage cells) that would allow storage for an additional 3.4 million tons of gold ore tailings approximately 1.0 million of which has been deposited since 1990. The focus of Deak's long term tailings disposal strategy is to acquire the Barber Lake Basin which is currently adjoined to our main tailings system which will provide an additional 10 million tons of storage capacity.

"To reduce concentrate dewatering and drying costs, the Concentrator Division at Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. investigated available filtration technologies. Numerous methods were explored, including: drum, disk, belt, pressure, hyperbaric, and ceramic media filtration. An economic evaluation of the individual filtration technologies indicated the advantages of ceramic media filtration for Morenci concentrates. This paper discusses the technological development culminating in the first full scale application of ceramic media disk filters in North America. Low moisture contents are obtained at high production rates and greatly reduced operating costs.INTRODUCTIONPhelps Dodge commissioned the Morenci Concentrator Filter Plant in 1942 with four 8'6"" Dorr-Oliver cloth disk filters. That year, the filter plant processed 265,537 tons of concentrate grading 20.5% Cu. The filter cake production averaged 9.3% moisture. In 1944, the Extension Filter Plant commenced operation with three additional 8'6"" Dorr-Oliver cloth disk filters. This coincided with the expansion of the concentrator. Production that year totaled 451,567 tons of concentrate grading 23.8% Cu. Moisture averaged 9.4%.Through the years additional filter units have been added in response to increased concentrate production. An Eimco drum filter was installed on the extension side and an additional Dorr-Oliver disk filter was installed on the original side in the 1950's. In 1961, two 8'6"" Peterson disk filters were installed, one on each side to replace two worn-out DorrOlivers. The installation of four 10xl2 foot Peterson drum filters was completed in 1974, coinciding with the Metcalf Concentrator startup. An Eimco belt filter was installed later.The greatest change to concentrate dewatering at Morenci occurred in 1963 with the addition of a 10x60 foot rotary gas fired dryer. The installation also included a number of conveyors to deliver filter cake from both plants to and from the dryers. Other ancillary systems included dust scrubbers and their slurry pumps. The commencement of drying was undertaken due to the rapid increase in cake moisture as a result of the LPF process and the recycling of acid plant scrubber dust slurry from the smelter. In 1972, a second dryer system was installed to increase capacity."

In the last 30 years numerous mining plants have been developed in North America but only a handful of these have required freezing the area where the shaft was sunk. The most recent mine shaft to be sunk using this technique is located on an island off the coast of Louisiana. The project required the input and skills of numerous people in several companies, including the owner, engineers and contractors. The Cote Blanche installation is one of several mines in the area which extract salt from a dome which extends under the Gulf of Mexico. The geology of this area is, however, markedly different from others in the region because there is approximately 460 ft of water logged soil above the salt dome. Because it is not possible to sink a shaft in ground that is this soft, the overburden where the shaft is located must be frozen before excavation can take place. The Cote Blanche mine is a producing facility which was built in 1958 by the Carey Salt Company. The original facility included a 14 ft diameter production shaft and a 7 ft-8 in diameter service/ventilation/escape shaft. This system was installed by The Cementation Company. In 1996 the owner decided to improve both the mine ventilation and production hoisting system by installing a third shaft. This shaft would be designed to extract 650 tons per hour from a depth of 1600 ft and provide 500,000 cfm of ventilation to the mine at a maxium design pressure of 4 in WG. These parameters resulted in a requirement for a 16 ft finished inside diameter concrete lined shaft and a headframe designed as a pressure bulkhead. Because the mine would operate from one level only, the most efficient hoisting system for the application was determined to be a ground mounted koepe running on rope guides. With these criteria fixed Cote Blanche embarked on a program which would see construction start in June 1998 with the first salt produced in February 2001 at a cost of $US18M. The major players in the design and construction were G.L. Tiley & Associates Ltd., BLM Bharti Engineering, Freezewall Inc., Phillips Mining, Geotechnical and Grouting Inc., Don Hart Consulting and Dynatec International.

"Eastern Canadian thermal coal mined at Minto, New Brunswick, and in western Cape Breton at St. Rose, Inverness County, Nova Scotia, contains 6-8 per cent sulphur. Both coals are high volatile bituminous. types. The Minto coal averages 18 per cent ash, 7 per cent sulphur and has a Btu rating of 11,900 per lb. Pyritic sulphur accounts for 75 per cent of the total sulphur and the remainder is largely organic; the amount of sulphate sulphur is negligible. This means that in a 7 per cent sulphur coal, 2 per cent is organic and 5 per cent pyritic sulphur. Pit-head St. Rose coal contains approximately 10 per cent ash, 7 per cent sulphur and 11 ,800 Btu/lb. The distribution of sulphur is different to that of Minto coal because about 12 per cent sulphate sulphur is present. Thus, a 7 per cent sulphur coal would contain 4 per cent pyritic, 2 per cent organic and 1 per cent sulphate sulphur.The iron sulphides, pyrite and, to a lesser extent, marcassite occur over a wide size range from large sulphur balls to crack fillings, lenses, and individual crystals and framboids. Coarse-grained pyrite and sulphur balls are easily separated during washing. It is the fine grain sizes, intimately mixed with the coal constituents, that are difficult to separate. Quantimet analyses of the fine grains in coal from both localities showed that about 50 per cent were smaller than 30 micron(1).No efforts have been made to wash the Inverness coal of Nova Scotia and in 1980 washing ceased in New Brunswick. Previously, the Minto coal was processed in an antiquated jig circuit which reduced ash from the strip operation run-of-mine value of more than 20 per cent to less than 18. More effective removal of ash and sulphur could clearly be obtained. Laboratory tests on both Minto and St. Rose coal have shown that ash rejection rates of 40 to 50 per cent at yields of 70-80 per cent were possible(2), Little information on sulphur removal was available."

New deposits are often characterized as low-grade and complex ore bodies. To date, processing of fine grained ore deposits implies complex processing routes with high energy consumption. For that reason, the investigation of dry grinding, e.g. with vertical roller mills (VRM), is an approach to save energy reserves. It is already proven that dry grinding can influence subsequent processing steps. In terms of flotation, the surface characteristics of the minerals are crucial for a successful flotation process, e.g. the sufficient adhesion of mineral particles and air bubbles. Wet grinding results in different surface properties of the product entering the conditioning stage than dry grinding, which has direct influences on the subsequent flotation process. To investigate the consequences for flotation, processing of a copper sulfide ore containing chalcopyrite and bornite was investigated, including grinding and rougher flotation. The effects of wet tumbling mill and dry VRM grinding on the degree of liberation of valuable minerals are characterized using mineral liberation analysis by scanning electron microscopy. The obtained flotation results, as well as the recorded flotation parameters such as dissolved oxygen, oxidation reduction potential and conductivity are presented and discussed. INTRODUCTION Copper production is mainly connected to porphyry copper deposits as main source for copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite and bornite. State-of-the-art processing of these deposits is already established worldwide for decades, combining crushing, fine grinding and subsequent flotation with rougher, cleaner and scavenger stages (del Villar, Desbiens, & Maldonado, Bouchard, 2010). While the demand for copper is increasing, copper grades of the deposits are decreasing and the remaining ore bodies have more complex mineralogy and finer particle size distribution. This implies processing routes with high water and – due to the liberation of fine grained valuable minerals – high energy consumption by fine grinding. One of the main energy consumers in processing plants is the grinding section, which accounts for more than 50% of the energy consumption in processing plants and even 4% of the worldwide energy consumption (Jeswiet, & Szekeres, 2016). Therefore, dry fine grinding alternatives are applied to enhance the overall energy consumption of mineral processing plants: high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and vertical roller mills (VRM).

Over half of the total concentrate treated originates from the Red Dog Mine in Alaska. During the summer, concentrate is shipped from Alaska to Vancouver where it is loaded into rail cars and hauled inland, transferred to trucks and delivered to Trail. The remainder of the roaster feed is made up of Sullivan concentrate and various custom concentrates. These arrive either by train or by truck.There are three roasters available for roasting the concentrate. The two major roasters are Lurgi fluid bed units. Each Lurgi roaster can process concentrate at about 1:7 tonnes per hour (tlb). A smaller Cominco suspension roaster with a capacity of 10 tlb is also used. The flowsheet for the high temperature section of the fluid bed circuit is shown in Figure 1.Concentrates fed to fluid bed roasting are conditioned with 7 1/min water to give 8% moisture in feed. Two slinger belts throw the mixture into the fluidized bed. The fluid bed roasters are 10.4 m in diameter with a bed depth of 1 m. Grate area is 84 m2• Normal operating conditions include bed temperatures of 930°C to 950°C, fluidizing air at 750 Nm3/min and a wind box pressure of 2000 mm H2O."

"The Ainsworth mining camp is on the west side of Kootenay lake; British Columbia; 14 miles south of the town of Kaslo. It is in one of the oldest mining districts in central British Columbia; for mining started there in 1888. Its principal production was between 1905 and 1920. Activity since then has been sporadic. According to available records; some 222; 000 tons of ore had been produced from the camp up to 1942.GENERAL GEOLOGY Bedrock in the district consists of a succession of quartzite, quartz-mica schist, hornblende schist, and limestone of Late Precambrian, Carboniferous, and Triassic age. Most of the hornblende schists are of volcanic origin but some formed from related intrusions. The Nelson granodiorite batholith of Jurassic age borders the camp on the west. There is also a series of basic dykes of much later age."

"For many years the training of mill operators was an informal process which involved senior operators training junior operators on an as-needed basis. Recognizing the needs and benefits of better training some companies, and even some provinces through legislation, have moved to ensure that a formalized training program exists in the plants. These programs tend to focus on basic safety and operations. Much remains to be done. With the more rapid incorporation of new processing and information technologies, and the goal to keep labour costs to a minimum by doing more with less, operator training has become a critical issue. This paper briefly examines the evolution of training programs, provides some measure of their effectiveness, and explores some recent developments which could have a very significant impact on the industry.PreambleOne can draw an analogy between operator training and the mechanical support of production equipment. When we buy a piece of process equipment it is critical that the mechanical installation be done properly to ensure that the device will operate at peak performance on start-up. Once the equipment is running, some form of preventive maintenance is required to ensure continued efficient operation. The operators and the equipment are both elements of the processing system, yet the former do not seem to get the same ""start-up"" or ""operating"" support. Are they not seen as critical to efficient operation? Why is this so? What impact does it have? How can we improve?These are all very logical and important questions, although the answers are not nearly so obvious. In the mineral processing industry, progress in operator training over the past thirty years has been limited and quite variable. To address the perceived need for a more coherent and consistent approach, some provinces have moved to incorporate basic training requirements in their legislation. Some plants have gone a few steps further by building integrated training programs into their operating culture. One conclusion which can be easily reached is that there are no standards, and that the range of training activity is great. In other words, a flotation operator is not a flotation operator is not a flotation operator. Their knowledge and skills are very much a function of training and experience, which are clearly corporate and site specific."

MR. R. V. NEILY stated that he had at one time operated at Goldenville. The practice and results are much the same now as in the olden days. Inside plates were then found to be a source of trouble and had been removed. At the Libbey mine, Queen&apos;s county, the sulphides carried considerable gold, and $45.00 to $60.00 per ton had been recovered from the concentrates by roasting and chlorinating. Later, concentrates were treated with bromocyanide. Following that practice, a cyanide leaching plant was installed, which did not require concentration of the tailings. Cyanidation brought a recovery of around 95 per cent, with but $300 worth of plant. In Nova Scotia, the ore of each locality presents an individual problem of its own as to treatment required. Ma. W. B. Timm stated that, in the majority of Nova Scotia gold ores, more than 75 per cent of the gold content is free-milling and, naturally, stamps are most efficient for collecting and amalgamating this gold. In Ontario and the West, they had got away from stamps, and perhaps the main reason was that the supply of battery-men, who came from Nova Scotia, had died off. Ball-mills had been installed, which required smaller space and handled large tonnage, even though, as far as amalgamation goes, the stamps were probably more efficient. If concentration is to be done, ore from stamps is usually in better shape for recovery in passing over the tables, as there is no slime. With the ball-mill, flotation is necessary. The better practice, undoubtedly, is to take out what gold is possible before it is all smashed up, as in the ball-mill, though recent developments in the ball-mill make it possible to trap and take coarse gold directly from the mill. In this way, cyanidation is speeded-up, due to saving of the time the coarse gold would take before going into solution. PROFESSOR A. E. FLYNN found it unusual in these days to read anything in favour of the stamp mill, and thanked Mr. Henderson for the excellent paper in which he upholds the stamps and backs his opinion with facts from actual operations. For the typical Nova Scotia ore, containing coarse gold, stamps are un¬excelled. It used to be said that the virtue of stamps is that they brighten the gold for amalgamation. Although this saying is almost classical, it is not true, for gold is never brighter than in the native, untouched state. Any hammering that gold gets makes it more difficult to amalgamate.
