"The treatment of nickel-copper concentrate in the new smelter at Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, Falconbridge, Ontario, is described. The concentrate in a slurry form is partially roasted in a fluid-bed roaster and the calcine is smelted in an electric furnace. The roaster gases are treated in an acid plant. IntroductionSmelting began at Falconbridge in 1930 with the first blast furnace treating high-grade ore containing 2-3% nickel. In 1933, the Falconbridge concentrator was built and started producing a bulk sulphide concentrate containing 4% nickel. A sinter plant was built to agglomerate and partially roast this concentrate. The sinter was smelted in blast furnaces along with high. grade magnetic ore. Matte from the furnaces was treated in Pierce-Smith converters to produce shipping matte which was refined at the company's plant in Norway."

Due to difficulties associated with gripping in direct tension, indirect methods are commonly used to measure rock tensile strength. In this work, we adopt an innovative indirect tensile test method: Semi-Circular Bend (SCB) to measure the tensile/flexural strength of Laurentian granite (LG). The static tests are carried out with a servo-controlled material testing machine and the dynamic tests are conduced with a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system. Pulse shaping technique is adopted to achieve dynamic force equilibrium in SHPB to facilitate data regression. Finite element method is used to relate the failure load to the tensile strength. Strong rate dependence of the tensile strength is observed. The flexural strength is higher than the tensile strength measured using Brazilian Disc (BD). This difference is rationalized using the non-local theory. To further validate the method, a coupled Finite element/Discrete element method (Fem/Dem) in conjunction with the smeared crack model is utilized to simulate the fracture process during dynamic SCB tests. The resulting fracture patterns are qualitatively consistent with those from recovered samples. Both the experimental and numerical methods have validated the results and this new method is readily to be used for other rocks and other brittle materials.

"Cracking is one of the most serious damages in tunnel linings, which is often observed by in-situ inspection to tunnel engineering. It is difficult to better characterise for the deformations from continua to discontinua by the traditional continuum mechanics due to emerging of crack initiation, crack propagation, and coalescence, at several scales. In this paper, the process of failure that was from micro damage to macro crack in concrete tunnel linings under experimental load conditions, was quantitatively simulated by the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM). Comparison of the simulating results with that obtained by the full-scale test of concrete lining under different loading conditions in the literature was respectively good agreed and shows that such FDEM technique is appropriate to model the continuousdiscontinuous problems. The present study indicates that the FDEM technique could be benefit to quantitatively evaluate the stability and damage level of tunnel lining system. INTRODUCTIONMost damage to tunnel linings is caused during the construction phase, which can emerge in a form of single macro cracks or even large-scale spalling. The cause of such damage is mostly the occurrence of, either impermissibly large contact stresses resulting from high thrust loads combined with production and installation tolerances in the segments resulting in a geometrical lack of fit (Maidl et al., 2012; Transportation Research Board, Basic Research and Emerging Technologies Related to Concrete Committee, 2006), or unallowable tensile/shear stresses appearing in the tunnel linings under complicated loading conditions (Ansell, 2010). Such a macro failure phenomenon may also be regarded to as a result of growth, coalescence, initiation of microcracks in tunnel linings due to the complicated loading action, and even potentially lead to an instability or collapse of the local or entire tunnel system. Much work has been devoted to investigate for the characters of micro and macro cracks, the influence factors of damage patterns, the settlement of a tunnel, the width, length and density of lining cracks, especially from classifiedly and qualitatively (Wang, 2010; Huang et al., 2013). However, the safety evaluation of tunnel is definitely required to not only inspect in situ, but further also quantify computing and analyzing for tunnel lining systems, so as to provide a global viewpoint of process of the tunnel deformation, which aims to help for subsequent decisions, e.g. controlling traffic flow or immediately repairing task. Additionally, the design of lining thickness and its structural analysis that is mostly determined by previous experience and similar construction examples is also needed to be improved."

This paper tells the story of the rapid commercial application of stirred milling technology at Anglo American Platinum?s many Concentrators. The first stirred mill ? a 10 000 litre IsaMillTM; the largest at the time, was commissioned in late 2003. The project development work was presented at SAG 2001. This operation was ?proof of concept? and vindicated the decision to scale up the technology; allowing a rapid and extensive roll-out of mainstream regrind mills as well as several further flotation concentrate regrind mills, over the next six years. Currently 23 stirred mills are in operation with 64 MW of installed drive capacity ? this paper describes the projects? roll-out and the significant results achieved to date. Many operational problems have been solved along the way, some of these will be described. The introduction of the technology has seen a step change in metallurgical results and progressively decreasing operating costs.

"The mechanics of crushing and grinding operations in mining and excavation processes has been investigated in a laboratory simulation study. It employs a multi-particle bedded rock target, which is subjected to multiple impacts. The impact set-up consists of a Hopkinson pressure bar and a Piston-holder system. The apparatus, employing a 38 mm diameter pressure bar, was used to apply varying but calibrated dynamic loading force on the rock particles. The energy consumed by the sample during fragmentation was determined by considering the energy carried by the incident wave and the reflected wave. The Pistonholder system is used to hold rock samples and to recycle fragments after each test for particle size analysis, for single as well as multiple impacts. The feed size selected was in the range of 9.5 to 12.7 mm for all rock samples, and the impact velocity was set at 14 m/s. Two strong granitic rocks and a relatively weak limestone were the target rocks. The resulting particle size distribution after each set of impacts, ranging from single to 10 consecutive impacts, were analyzed, and various size distribution functions (i.e. Rosin- Rammler, Swebrec, Grady and Gilvarry functions) were fitted to compare their suitability in predicting the fragment size distribution for each rock type. INTRODUCTIONCrushers are widely used in the mining industry all over the world. Understanding fragmentation behaviour of rock under crushing process is fundamental to improved productivity and efficiency in mining operations. This is particularly so as all subsequent size reduction processes such as crushing and grinding are far more energy intensive than the initial blasting process employed in breaking of in situ rock. A considerable body of experimental studies exists on the behaviour of rock crushers for specific rock types in order to aid in the design of various types of crushers. However, these studies are mainly site specific, that is, the results are largely empirical, and the fundamentals of fracture process that lead to size reduction have not been dealt with adequately. Most such studies have attempted to link the input parameters, such as feed size and crusher parameters, with output particle size, and global energy expended in the process. However the physical mechanism of crushing process is still not well understood. First of all, the energy consumed by the rock sample is hard to calculate during standard crushing or grinding tests; secondly, multi-particle test is hard to perform in the laboratory due to irregular shape of the subject rock sample. In This paper, describes a laboratory crushing apparatus for multi-particle rock samples, with sufficient control of the energy expended in the process, with a view to relate creation of new fracture surfaces in the size reduction process."

"Access to the outside world is supplied by the Alaska Highway to continental Canada and the United States, the Haines Highway, and by the White Pass & Yukon Route to Skagway and Vancouver. Communities and mining developments located along the Alaska Highway are supplied daily by truck transport with commodities originating in Whitehorse, Edmonton, and Vancouver.The average payload on the Alaska and Mayo Highway is in the order of 16 to 25 tons and is subject to government regulations. Highway haulage distances to railhead at Whitehorse vary as does the direction. The Clinton Creek asbestos development is located 395 road miles north-west of Whitehorse whereas the United Keno Hill operation is 287 miles to the north. Cassiar Asbestos is located in Northern British Columbia at a distance of 357 miles south-east of railhead at Whitehorse. In order to service these various mines multipurpose highway vehicles have been designed to allow maximum backhaul of petroleum products. The White Pass & Yukon Route was established as an integrated transportation system from 1955 when it became apparent that three non-integrated systems (ship, rail and truck), with the various paper work and rising costs, could not continue to serve the needs of Yukon. Integration became the company policy and a system was developed. A special container ship (Clifford J. Rogers) was designed and built. This was the first specially built container ship in the world. The northern container integrated system was operational in 1955.In 1965 over 8.5 million dollars were spent in upgrading the container facility and the construction of a tanker-container ship designed specifically to serve Yukon and Northern B.C. "The recycling of wastepaper has become an important and common process worldwide. Techniques similar to those used in the mineral processing industry are used to produce high quality recycled fibres for use in newsprint. The mineral processing group at McGill University, in conjunction with the Pulp and Paper industry (Mechanical and Chemi-mechanical Wood Pulp Network), has adapted one of these techniques, column flotation, for the purpose of deinking wastepaper. This article describes the typical process of recycling wastepaper from a mineral processing point of view. It also presents results from McGill University’s flotation column test work at a Québec wastepaper recycling facility. IntroductionThe recycling of wastepaper has become an important and common process worldwide, including Canada which is now the world’s largest importer of wastepaper (CPPA, 1996). Much of the current drive to increase the utilization rate of recovered paper is a reaction to the solid-waste disposal problem that faces many Canadian and United States municipalities. The real problem in the disposal of solid waste is not the absolute amount of garbage that must be disposed of each year, but this amount in relation to available disposal capacity.Environmental restrictions on the creation of new landfill sites and incinerators (the two main options for disposal of municipal solid waste) have tightened the demand/supply balance in the solid waste disposal market. This shrinking availability of waste disposal sites in the face of increasing population with greater disposal requirements defines the Developed World’s solid waste crisis. Not only are there fewer disposal sites available, but the costs of using them is skyrocketing. These factors have increased government regulations mandating recycled paper content in newsprint. Conservation and environmental issues make the current drive for wastepaper recycling a real issue and business opportunity."

This paper presents a case study where Cenozoic age detritals and an ancient buried landslide have been modelled in the final walls of an iron ore pit. Orebody 25 is located in Western Australia’s Pilbara region and is an operating pit where a redesign of the final wall cutback was required. The existing slope design utilised a simplistic geological model of mixed conglomeratic, calcretic and clay –dominated detritals overlying deformed bedrock sequences. This simplicity resulted in a conservative design that was not reflective of the slopes performance to that point. Further field investigation was carried out with the results assessed in conjunction with historic drilling, mapping and laboratory testing. A detailed geotechnical model was developed including three conglomerate and two clay dominated units and laterstage calcrete overprinting. The clay units were of significant importance to the stability assessment and resulting slope design due to the thickness and poor strength conditions indicated by the laboratory and field testing. However, the drilling investigation shed only limited understanding as to the origin of the clays and thereby how they should be treated as a component in the stability analysis. A comparison of the ratio of various geochemical elements measured by assay was made between the clays and 1) shale bedrock and 2) clays of known detrital origin from other nearby sites. This indicated the clays had a strong affinity with weathered bedrock. This and other textural features resulted in the interpretation that the clay units were relic debris preserved following ancient landslides in bedrock shale. Using laboratory testing data and calibration of results for a landslide origin, stability analyses were run, resulting in a steeper slope design being implemented. Excavation of the final cutback is now in progress with the model confirmed as appropriate.

"SGS implemented two rules-based fuzzy logic expert applications on two grinding circuits operated by Peñoles Group in Mexico. Both expert systems are based on control strategies that push against process constraints to improve throughput. Based on proven methodologies, the projects also required some new approaches that led to permanent changes to the mill control strategy.This paper provides descriptions of the implementation, operation and performance of both expert systems. It also reviews how improved production rates were achieved through the use of a common set of expert technology tools. An overview of the resulting control strategies implemented on the two circuits is presented. The paper also discusses the identification of the process constraints within each circuit and how these constraints are used within the expert systems.INTRODUCTIONMexico-based mining company Peñoles Group and the Advanced Systems group at SGS, formally known as MinnovEX Technologies Inc., collaborated on the implementation of two expert systems in two grinding plants, both located in Northern Mexico.The primary objective of the expert systems was to increase throughput whilst still maintaining the cyclone overflow product size within an acceptable range. The secondary objective was to achieve a high level of utilisation of the expert technology.In order to achieve these objectives, SGS proposed a proven methodology which leveraged the existing operating and technical expertise at site through the client’s involvement in the design and implementation stages. The in-house operating and technical expertise of SGS was also brought to the project and implemented with the client’s approval at all stages. At both sites the final acceptance was defined upon meeting both process and utilization parameters.The development and deployment of rules-based fuzzy logic applications has matured as a technology and consequently, clear definition of process states and their place in the logic structure to control a given circuit are now transferable. The key to the robustness of the control logic depends on selection and tuning rules for maintaining stability and optimizing a given circuit. Application integrators need to have a standardized approach for timely integration and deployment; a critical component to avoid the common critiques that expert applications are idiosyncratic and difficult to maintain."

Acid mine drainage (AMD) from mine wastes is one of the most challenging environmental problems currently facing the mining industry. When mining wastes have the potential to produce AMD, the effluents produced have to be managed to meet existing regulations on water quality. The LTA impoundment (property of Barrick Gold Corp.) located near Malartic, Quebec, contains sulphide tailings that have the potential to generate an acidic leachate. The closure option selected by Barrick was to construct a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE), in which the moisture- retaining layer is made of non-acid-generating tailings. Since its construction in 1996, the cover has been monitored to evaluate its performance. For that purpose, various parameters have been measured, including the volumetric water content and matric suction in the different layers of the cover. This paper presents some of the main results from the monitoring program that started eight years ago. The results show that the cover is able to maintain a high degree of saturation in its moisture- retaining layer, acting as an oxygen barrier. The actual performance of the CCBE on the flat surface of the 60 ha site is better than expected at the design stage. The only concern with the LTA cover is the effect of slopes that can reduce the performance of the CCBE during dry periods. However, these effects appear only for short periods of time, and are limited to very localized areas, so that they do not significantly affect the overall performance of the CCBE and its ability to limit the production of AMD.

"IntroductionTWO METHODS of mucking have been used in sinking C shaft, the five-compartment production shaft of the Yellowknife property of Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited:(a) Band mucking during the original sinking in 1949 and 1950 (l); and(b) Mechanical mucking with the Cryderman shaft mucker during the recent deepening in 1954.This paper briefly describes the recent deepening and compares the performance figures of the two sinking operations.PlanningProduction planning in 1952 showed that it would be advisable to deepen C shaft in 1954 to provide for three new production levels and the installation of an underground crusher. To complete the required shaft work it would be necessary for a shaft crew to deepen the shaft about 500 feet, to partly excavate three level stations and a crusher station, and to cut a station for the loading pocket. Figure 1, a vertical section of the lower part of the shaft, shows the details of the deepening programme.During the planning period, Giant had a rather small supervisory staff and at the same time was experiencing a heavy labour turnover. As it was obvious that production would suffer if the sinking crew were recruited at the mine, it was decided that the merits of contracting-the shaft sinking to an independent contractor should be investigated."

"Slurry «viscosity» has been recognised for several decades as a variable that significantly influences the operation of grinding mills. This paper describes an instrument that can be used in a laboratory or a plant to measure and monitor the flow properties of mineral slurries. Laboratory results obtained for two different ore samples are consistent with results obtained during a full scale trial. The results provide a basis for analysing the effect of the solids concentration and particle size distribution on the slurry flow properties. Grinding tests were also conducted in an attempt to link the grinding efficiency to the rheological properties of mineral slurries.INTRODUCTIONThe flow properties, or incorrectly called «viscosity», of a slurry influence the operation of mineral processing devices. Work has been conducted for instance to assess the effect of this variable on the operation of hydrocyclones (Kawatra et al. 1996; Klimpel, 1982a) and dense media separators for coal (Napier-Munn, 1996). However, most of the research effort has been oriented toward the grinding processes which is still the most energy demanding operation for ore dressing (Fuerstenau et al., 1995).Results of investigations of the influence of slurry flow properties upon grinding performances are presented regularly in the literature since 1950. In the 70's, most of the research work was conducted with the aim of using slurry flow properties for the control of grinding mill and to analyze the effect of that variable upon the population balance model breakage and rate functions (Austin et al., 1984; Hemmings et Boyes, 1977). In the 80's, most of the litterature dealing with slurry rheology was devoted to the use of viscosity modifiers to adjust the slurry flow properties, allowing an increase of grinding mill throughputs (Klimpel, 1982b; Fuerstenau et al., 1985). Although laboratory and pilot plant results show the benefits of adding these modifiers to the slurry, few plants have published results concerning the advantages of such addition (Fuerstenau et al., 1985). It is felt that the use of these modifiers introduce operating difficulties with the concentration circuits, especially flotation (Kawatra et Eisele, 1988)."

"Highmont, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teck Corporation, operates a 25,000 ton/day mine and concentrator located in the Highland Valley of British Columbia. Construction of the plant commenced in the spring of 1979, and production from one grinding line began in late December 1980. The second grinding line began production in March 1980.The ore body consists of two main zones, the east and west pits, containing 134 million tons of ore, averaging 0.26% Cu and 0.27% Mo. Mineralization consists mainly of chalcopyrite (2/3), bornite (1/3), and molybdenite.The concentrator design incorporates an A-B-C grinding circuit (auto mill ball mill - crusher), followed by bulk flotation, copper-moly separation and leaching for moly concentrates. The two grinding and bulk flotation circuits are parallel and independent. Concentrate storage is provided between bulk flotation and copper¬moly separation and also ahead of molybdenite leaching. The plant design has been previously described in some detail. (""THE HIGHMONT CONCENTRATOR"" by C. V. Sibbald, CIMM Bulletin, March 1981).This paper will outline some of the problems associated with the construction, startup and early operation phases of the concentrator. "The Oil sands-Equipment Interactions Program (OsEIP) is a collaborative research venture between Syncrude Canada Ltd., James Progithin International Ltd. (JPi), the University of Alberta, P&H MinePro, and Caterpillar Inc. The objective is to better understand the behaviour of oil sands as it interacts with mining equipment, in particular, large trucks and shovels. With a move to ever larger equipment, mining oil sands of highly variable bitumen content, ground stability comes into question. This paper outlines this aspect of OsEIP and provides some insight into how some of the findings enable an improved understanding of oil sands behaviour that may impact large equipment design, operational and maintenance strategies. IntroductionThe mechanical behaviour of oil sands in the underfoot and in the face yields some of the harshest stability and digging conditions of any mining environment. High maintenance costs from truck and shovel fatigue failures predominate as a result of ground stability issues. Wear rates of shovel and dozer ground engaging tools (GET), rollers, roller paths and crusher screens result in costly and frequent replacement, or even more frequent and costly sacrificial wear zone building. From the shovel face to the crushers and screens, dry oil sands mechanics affects the degree of fragmentation and, ultimately, bitumen production.An increased knowledge of the behaviour of oil sands with respect to stability, fragmentation and abrasion, etc. would enhance the long-term equipment design process at the vendor level, and provide the end user with improved short-term operational guidelines and long-term strategies for future purchases and operation. Truck vendors recognize that the interaction between operator, seat, frame, suspension, tires and oil sands is unclear, and must be better understood before proceeding to next generation designs. Similarly for shovel manufacturers, the relationship between bucket/dipper motion, carbody, side frame, rollers, track and oil sands follow in the same vein."

The economic evolution from an agrarian society to an industrial and service-oriented economy is apparent to most students of history. The long-term trend is almost taken for granted, it does not require explanation — it is accepted as the nature of man to improve his standard of living. However, there are fluctuations around this trend line which have provoked a great deal of thought. The ability to understand and control these fluctuations would yield many benefits, it would eliminate economic waste and public hardship, and would no doubt make a few fortunes. I f it is not possible to control or eliminate these fluctuations, then a reasonable forecast of the tinting, rate of change and magnitude of the fluctuations would be invaluable to industry and government.

Gold is one of the most widely used substrate materials for self-assembly. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) prepared from alkanethiols and their derivatives on gold are the most reliable and well-studied systems to date, which have attracted much attention because of interest in two-dimensional molecular assemblies, and of their potential applications in molecular devices, sensors, and functionalized interfaces. Gold electrodes are also very important in microelectronics and electroanalytical chemistry. This work reports the characterization of a new type of gold substrates for self-assembly. The gold substrates are constructed from recordable compact disks (R-CDs) with simple and straightforward wet-chemical treatment, and can be made at desired sizes and shapes that satisfy different experimental needs. In particular, an easy, inexpensive, and reproducible method to prepare self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on CD-R gold substrates after removing the protective polymer films with concentrated nitric acid was described.

The extraction of cobalt from synthetic pressure acid leach solutions of nickel laterite ores by the direct solvent extraction route using ESPLIM is reported. It first explored the use of gaseous ammonia as pH modifier and then the variables that affect the dispersion of the aqueous phase in the organic phase such as ionic strength, viscosity of the phases, initial droplet size, etc. were explored so that phase hold-up and thus extraction can be effectively controlled. The results show that the technique allows better control of phase dispersion circumventing one of the main weaknesses of conventional solvent extraction.

"Chemical and limited biological monitoring of mine and mill effluents are being used by regulatory agencies to monitor and control discharges to the environment. Amendments to the Federal Fisheries Act may make it mandatory for mines to conduct Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) which will change the emphasis from monitoring effluents to monitoring impacts on receiving waters. The EEM amendments may expand the scope of present environmental studies to include: effluent mixing zone delineation; inventory and classification of resource, habitat, and historical receiving environment; effluent quality determination; chronic and acute bioassay testing; tissue analysis; benthic invertebrate monitoring; fish population surveying; fish tainting evaluation; and the evaluation of impacts on fish habitat, invertebrate communities and fisheries resources. The requirements for EEM have not yet been worked out by the mining industry and the government committee. Experience at Lakefield Research in conducting biological monitoring studies for the mining industry has shown that biological monitoring may be useful for assessing environmental impacts only if programs are planned and executed to collect relevant data, thus minimizing costs and maximizing effectiveness.IntroductionThe chemical monitoring of effluents and water bodies receiving effluents is common practice in the Canadian mining industry and has been used routinely by regulatory agencies to control discharges to the environment. Biological monitoring has also been used on a limited basis, primarily to augment chemical data collected. A number of regulatory bodies, primarily in Canada and the United States, have been incorporating biological monitoring into environmental regulations.Various forms of biological monitoring techniques have been used in Canada and the United States to help assess the impact of mining operations and effluents on the environment. Biological monitoring includes a wide range of activities, from monitoring metal uptake in individual organisms to examining the population dynamics in ecosystems. The most commonly employed biological monitoring techniques are the chronic lethality toxicity tests. Also becoming widely used are in situ and chronic toxicity tests."

"In the flotation of fine particles, there are two difficulties in general: low recovery of valuable minerals and high recovery of gangue minerals. The low recovery of fine valuable minerals is attributed to low bubble-particle collision and attachment efficiencies, while high recovery of fine gangue minerals is attributed to mechanical entrainment through water films between gas bubbles. Over the last five years COREM has been actively developing fine particle flotation techniques with the objective of improving fine particle flotation separation efficiencies.The fine particle flotation techniques with both generation of micro bubbles and enlargement of sizes of fine particles have been developed to increase bubble-particle collision efficiency. For oxidized fine sulphide minerals, both physical and chemical techniques have been developed to modify the hydrophilic surfaces and therefore increase bubble-particle attachment efficiency. To reduce mechanical entrainment of fine gangue minerals, a new approach, polymeric depression and flocculation, has been developed. By selecting the high molecular weight polymeric depressants to make fine gangue minerals hydrophilic and also enlarge their sizes, entrainment can be minimized. By combining these techniques, we are able to improve both flotation recovery and selectivity in some fine ore flotation systems.INTRODUCTIONWith depleting mineral resources and their declining grades, ores leaving grinding circuit for froth flotation are becoming increasingly finer to achieve mineral liberation. Together with the increasing demand for minerals, ever-increasing tonnages of fines are being produced. Therefore, flotation of fine particles is an immense challenge to be tackled by researchers all over the world today."
