The process of refurbishment is not a precisely defined one. It is under- stood to mean an upgrading of a plant which is normally performed only once. The application of refurbishment in the field of materials hand- ling equipment poses particular problems because complex plants con- sist of individual components having quite different remaining service lives. For this reason, a systematic, proven procedure is proposed for the refurbishment of large materials handling equipment, designed to ensure economic implementation in accordance with the company goals. Rheinbraun2 has been using materials handling equipment since 1900, the largest units today being bucket-wheel excavators with a daily capacity of 240,000 bank cubic metres of overburden and a service weight of up to 13,500 t (metric tons). Since 1975, more than 50 large-scale refurbish- ment projects have been carried out in the company. In the process, refur- bishment has turned out to be the proven alternative to replacement of large materials handling equipment. Rheinbraun Engineering,3 a Rhein- braun subsidiary, carries out planning, consulting, and supervising work in the implementation of refurbishment projects in Germany and abroad. The most recent example is the refurbishment of Dredger 11 of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria in cooperation with Krupp-Australia, Melbourne.

The Hedong Gold Mine is located in the Yantai area, Shandong province, China. It is an underground mine with an annual gold output of some 700 000 grams. The orebody is located on the edge of the Wanger Shan metamorphism zone, and the hangingwall of orebodies is thus defined by a prominent set of fractures. The proximity of the metamorphism zone and the inclusion of the fracture set ensure that both the orebody and the country rocks are unstable. The main orebodies dip at an angle of between 40 to 45¦, with a strike length of 160 metres and a horizontal width of 50 metres. Surface subsidence in the area is not permitted. Cut and fill mining is usually practiced. As the mining operation proceeds to greater depths, the ore grade is diminishing and it is necessary to find a more efficient stoping method. Sublevel open stoping with sequential extraction and filling of each sublevel has been designed and applied in situ. This new mining method is called æsublevel open and fill stoping methodÆ in the mine. Experience to-date is that new mining method is satisfactory.

Reconciliation of the ore reserve has been an integral part of mine planning since Bougainville Copper Ltd. commenced mining operations at Panguna in 1972. Confidence in the ore reserve is considered essential, both for long term planning of the deposit, and for fair and accurate reporting of the mining resource to shareholders. Recoverable, proven reserves are published annually. Although the ore reserve quoted is based only on diamond drill hole (DDH) information on a 122 metre by 122 metre grid, predictions are regularly reviewed against production. Concentrator results are taken to be the best estimate of grade and tonnage. Surveyed mined perimeters and average blasthole grades are reconciled at the end of each month against the concentrator figures. Predictions of the in-pit reserve are made using an orebody model. DDH and blasthole (BH) sample grades are used to make predictions for both long and short term planning. This paper describes how reconciliations are used to validate ore reserves at Panguna. Development of the orebody model is described, and some of the difficulties encountered in doing reconciliations are addressed.

Outokumpu has developed a new chloride leach process, called HydroCopper«, to treat copper concentrates. Chalcopyrite is quite refractory in leaching and in sulfate milieu an autoclave of high temperature and pressure is required. However, in the HydroCopper«-process copper sulfides can effectively be leached in atmospheric pressure using strong, aggressive chloride solution and copper (II) ions as oxidant. Copper is precipitated from the purified pregnant leach solution as copper (I) oxide, which is filtered and reduced by hydrogen gas to metallic copper powder, which is melted and cast into copper product. Sodium chloride formed in precipitation is decomposed in a chlor-alkali electrolyser, the products of which are circulated back to the process: sodium hydroxide to copper (I) oxide precipitation, chlorine gas to leaching and hydrogen gas to the reduction of copper (I) oxide. During 2003 - 2004 the performance of the HydroCopper«-process was confirmed in a demonstration plant processing one tonne of copper per day. It has been found to be applicable for different kinds of concentrates and can also tolerate a wide range of impurities. A significant advantage of the process is that gold can be leached as a chloro-complex and recovered with active carbon. HydroCopper« can economically recover copper from concentrates and process to a cast copper product. The best utilisation of the process is in most cases achieved when the plant is situated at the mine site. Higher recoveries are attained by the optimisation of the whole operation chain from the mine and the concentrator to the HydroCopper« plant.

At the second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress held in 1927, the Empire Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions was formed and it was proposed that the Council take steps to prepare a "Review of the Mineral Resources and Industries of the Empire." At the third congress in 1930, it was resolved that the proposal to institute the review should be submitted to the Imperial Conference held in 1930. This was done, and the Minerals Committee, of the Imperial Economic Committee compiled, an interimreport which was based on statistics of imports and exports, and did not consider resources and consumption.In 1942 the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, wrote to the Empire Council and stated that it was desirable that the Council should be in a position to take part in decisions affecting the future of the mining and metallurgical industries. The Council communicated with the constituent Institutions regarding the nominations of two members then in England. Subsequently the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical ,Institute of India prepared a review of the mineral resources and industries of India and their post-war development, and the Empire Council forwarded a copy to the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and asked if that Institute would submit a review on simjIar lines for Australia. The geotechnical and environmental aspects of heap leaching are very closely tied during design, operations and closure. Potential environmental impacts from heap leaching are mostly due to land disturbance and water quality issues, including both groundwater and surface water. Water quality issues are mostly related to containment design, which is primarily a function of proper sizing of the facilities and site specific liner design. Geotechnical analyses is the dominant discipline in providing cost efficient, operationally effective and environmentally sound heap leach facility designs. Much has been published on geotechnical aspects of heap leach design, for example Van Zyl, Hutchison and Kiel (1988) and Van Zyl (1987). This paper will emphasize a few specific aspects related to the geotechnical and environmental consideration for heap leach projects. These aspects are: ò site investigation; ò containment design; ò slope stability; ò heap flow dynamics; and ò closure design. Design of a heap leach project must consider not only the operating life but also closure and post-closure considerations. As a matter of standard practice, designing for closure is an extremely important concept. Not only is it important for environmental aspects, but experience also shows that projects designed for closure will be overall more economical for the total life cycle of the project. Closure considerations are also important during project feasibility evaluations to ensure that total life cycle costs are evaluated.

When ore is being selected from a regularised block model, a common procedure is to accept as ore any block whose iron content exceeds a cut-off value, and whose content in each contaminant analyte is below an appropriate cut-off value. This method defines a quadrant within the multidimensional analyte space, such that any block lying within the quadrant is accepted as ore and any block lying outside the quadrant is rejected as waste. The cut-off levels can be adjusted to maximise ore tonnage at a target grade (or analyte vector). When the method is applied to a project comprising multiple pits with systematically differing grades, it is found that ore tonnage at target grade is maximised if different cut-off quadrants are used for the different pits. This is apparently illogical, because it implies that an ore block from one pit may be accepted as ore, but an identical block from another pit is rejected as waste, even when ore from both pits is to be blended into the same product and there are no production cost differences between the pits. The paradox is an example of the ætheory of the second bestÆ: if there are multiple conditions for optimality and one condition is broken, then obeying the other conditions may not be the best policy. The problem lies with the quadrant cut-off method, which is shown to be inconsistent even for selecting ore from a single pit. A criterion that is inconsistent cannot be optimal. It is shown that a linear composite cut-off function provides maximum ore tonnage, and that a single composite cut-off criterion is consistent and optimal over multiple pits. Further, it is shown that a composite cut-off function not only maximises ore tonnage at a specified composition, but also can be used to select ore so as to maximise project value, if marginal costs and values are available.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2013. Spatial continuity as described by a variogram is a reflection of the underlying mineralisation/geology. Modelling of the spatial continuity (variogram) must account for both the quantitative data (ie sample grades), on which the variogram calculations are based, and the qualitative information as provided by the geological interpretation. An understanding of the geology and the variogram interpretation tie together the sample values and allow us to go beyond the actual data (Journel, 1995). Variography makes geology transportable and allows the geological interpolations to be channelled downstream into mine planning, ultimately affecting the economic decisions surrounding a deposit. As such the process of variography and resource modelling is critical. Thus consistent expert decisions need to be made which force geologists to have a closer look at the available information and the geological interpretations. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the latest developments in visualising variography and to demonstrate their usefulness in decisions regarding the spatial continuity of mineralisation. New ideas concerning potential future developments in visualising and modelling spatial continuity through variography are introduced.

A number of theoretical papers have been published outlining the use of electronic detonators to limit peak particle vibrations levels, but few empirical studies have been undertaken and even fewer examples have been published of the use of such technology in the aggregates industry. This paper gives a summary of the research work carried out at two limestone quarries in the North of England, where a series of blasts were used to compare and contrast the use of electronic and non-electric detonators. The majority of blasts were carried out using the same burden, spacing and decked charge weight loadings. A methodology was established that could be used to reduce the peak particle velocities (PPVs) at two or more specific locations by using single-hole blast vibration signatures in conjunction with specific electronic detonator timing intervals. The initial study concluded that this was only possible if single-hole signature blasts were periodically recorded to establish the shape of the correct vibration envelopes as properties were approached. These wave envelopes could then be used as the basis for choosing the specific electronic detonator timing intervals to give the lowest PPV for the properties or locations concerned. This methodology was then used in the second study to access a large volume of aggregates adjacent to a working railway tunnel. The financial benefit for the company was to convert these additional tonnages of rock from being a resource to an exploitable reserve. The project involved careful blast design and the instrumentation of a number of boreholes to enable the results of blast monitoring exercises to be compared with predicted PPV results. The iterative process involved the vibration results being uploaded into æBlast LogÆ (an expert blasting database system developed by the Blasting and Environmental Research Group at the University of Leeds) and analysed to produce predictions ready for the next blast.

Many misunderstandings and poten- tially unsafe practices are discussed as well as variations between requirements of various Mines Departments. Various methods to improve safety are suggested and the formation of an industry committee to review present practice and foster development of improved safety and economy is also suggested.

The Cumnock Open Cut Mine (COCM) is located in the Hunter coalfield in New South Wales. Five coal seams are being mined, mostly by drilling and blasting, loaders and excavators, and trucks. The annual production of coal is 1.3 million tonnes. Overburden and interburdens consist mostly of siltstones and medium to thickly bedded sandstones. The strata dip to the south-east at approximately four degrees. There are no major faults in the rock mass.

Subsequent to large scale trials in 1987, the installation of a submerged lance Sirosmelt furnace system was approved in late-1988 for the cupellation of retort bullion to dore silver. Commissioning work commenced in June 1990. During the process air is lanced into a molten slag bath contained in a cylindrical vessel to rapidly oxidise the granulated feed bullion from 15 - 25 per cent silver to rough dore grade. The process is now an integral part of the Precious Metals operation replacing the first stage reverberatory cupellation furnaces to achieve productivity improvements, lower silver inventory and increased silver Recovery.

The optimisation of capital in the total planning context has broadly two components: ò maximising the efficient utilisation of capital against competing capital demands; and ò maximising the efficiency with which the industry's capital requirements are sourced. This paper focuses on the latter of these two concepts, as I wish to highlight that within the coal industry the inefficient sourcing of capital has resulted in the inefficient utilisation of capital. In discussing the optimisation of capital within the coal industry I would like to outline three fundamental issues which currently impact the industry and its application of capital: Initially, from the perspective of an independent investor, the perceived risk associated with investing in a volatile industry cycle has not permitted appropriate funding structures to be created thus leading to an inefficient utilisation of capital. Secondly, investors seeking out a windfall gain have established a practice of trading in the assets rather than encouraging recapitalisation. And lastly the mismatch of supply and demand leading to the establishment of new projects which include a percentage of offshore investment has fostered an environment of lower returns and subsequently a dilution of capital.

In eastern China, most of the copper skarn deposits occur in folded troughs which are controlled by the EW-trending faulted fold systems (the Pal-Asian geotectonic domain), and the NNE-trending rift or fault zones (the Marginal-Pacific geotectonic domain), particularly the later. From the north to the south, there are four troughs hosting the main copper skarn deposits in eastern China: the Yanliao Trough, the Yangzi River Trough, The Qiantang-Yuanshui Trough and the Zichen Trough. There are more than 30 copper skarn deposits in eastern China, and ore reserves of each deposit are between 30 to 100 Mt with average grades over 1 % Cu.

The operation of a one tonne submerged combustion pilot plant for the recovery of copper from anode furnace and converter slags is described and the effects of variables discussed. Using coal as reductant, copper levels of anode furnace slag were lowered to 1% or less, with batch times of approximately 120 minutes. Fluxing with limestone was required to produce a fluid slag at temperatures of 1200 - 1300¦C. For converter slags, reduction to 0.5% Cu or less was achieved in batch times of 35 minutes. The chemistry of the pyrometallurg- ical recovery of copper is briefly reviewed in relation.to copper recovery methods.

The tendency of the concentrate to ignite was studied using four techniques, namely, laminar flow furnace, fluid bed, thermal analysis and boat-in-furnace. Exothermic activity occurred at two temperatures: minor activity in the vicinity of 200¦C, major activity at 330-350¦C. The low temperature reaction was due to the ignition of a small amount of free sulphur while the major activity was associated with the ignition of the sulphide minerals, notably pyrite. To avoid ignition of the sulphide minerals, the gas temperature should not exceed 300¦C and the oxygen content of the gas phase should be as low as possible. It was shown that little of the arsenic in the concentrate entered the gas phase during drying.

This paper presents an economic study comparing two gold recovery processes, zinc precipitation (Merrill-Crowe) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). Capital, operating, and gold losses costs from an actual CIP plant study are compared to costs developed from a hypothetical Merrill-Crowe process flowsheet. ' Results indicate an overall economic advantage to CIP over Merrill-Crowe for plants processing slurries within the range of the five gold solution grades selected for this study.

This paper describes the use of modelling and simulation techniques in the analysis of the heavy medium plant at the Lead/Zinc Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited. The objective of the study is to determine how to increase heavy medium plant recovery at a higher than current rejection rate in order to achieve the desired throughput through the grinding and flotation sections of the concentrator. Three options were considered: 1. Install smaller aperture preparation on screen to enable the cyclones to be fed finer materials. Install smaller diameter cyclones. 3. Maintain low viscosity medium.

Longwall advance mining is still the predaninant system of coal extraction in the U.K., contribiiting to sane 70 % of underground coal production. Gate roadways providing access to a longwall advancing coal face are maintained adjacent to a rib pillar under high strata abutment pressures and the caving rock mass. It is very difficult to realistically model such access roadways using mathematical or numerical techniques and hence, predict roadway closure. For the past 15 years, a research group in Nottingham University has been engaged in the study of longwall gate roadway stability using observation methods. Gate roadway deformations have been measured in 224 gate roadways and a comprehensive data base has been established. The paper describes the statistical analysis of this database and presents sane. predictive equations which will enable a forecast of the gate roadway closure to he made. Further field work to validate these equations. is described together with an error analysis. The results are very promising and indicate that it is possible to predict gate roadway closure in the U.K. within practical limits of Accuracy.
