The flooding of open strip coal mines in the Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley Coalfields of Eastern Australia has the potential to soften the spoil and floor materials to produce “mud”. This mud can act as a slip plane or weak zone when spoil is dumped into it, resulting in geotechnical instabilities. Once mud has formed, typical handling techniques include its costly removal by mechanical means, or its isolation and capping.There are little data available on the moisture state and shear strength of the capped mud. To investigate the effectiveness of isolation and capping, research has been conducted using a large slurry consolidometer (150 mm in diameter by up to 410 mm in height) to simulate capping in situ. Once consolidated, the mud was subjected to shear strength testing in a direct shear box measuring 60 mm by 60 mm by about 20 mm high. The shear strength of the consolidated mud was compared to that of competent, fresh spoil, a mixture of spoil and mud, and to completely degraded spoil (mud alone).These results have been used as inputs in stability calculations using the commercial computer program Slide 7.0, which demonstrates the strong influence of consolidation of the mud on overall low wall slope stability. The use of rock bolts as permanent support has been prohibited by client specifications in several recent large tunnel projects in Australia. The justification for this appears to lie in concerns with proper and verifiable installation procedures rather than concerns with the intrinsic durability of the corrosion protection systems. However, in civil tunnels, preventing the use of permanent rock bolts for long-term support results in the use of cast in place concrete lining which in some instances would otherwise be unnecessary.

THE de-silverizing of base bullion at the Port Pirie works is carried out in accordance with the principles of the well-known Parkes process. The base bullion produced by the blast furnace department carries (apart from silver values) impurities, the chief of which are copper, antimony, and arsenic. In order to more clearly indicate the grade of the base bullion, the following analysis, representative of a half-year's production of base bullion, is submitted...Before proceeding with the actual operation of de-silverizing, it is necessary that the impurities, copper, antimony, and arsenic, should be eliminated. "This paper discusses the successful use of bituminous geomembranes (BGMs) in mining applications since their development in 1974. It explains and illustrates the structure of a BGM composite, which is a geomembrane manufactured by impregnating a polyester geotextile with a compound of bitumen, elastomer and filler. Examples of applications of BGMs in the mining industry are also presented in the following contexts.Storage of solid waste: storage of mining waste at mines in Canada heap leach pads in France, Peru, Chile and Turkey at the base of a mining waste landfill in Brazil capping of solid mining waste in Chile and Canada temporary capping of mining stockpiles in Australia (with possible reuse of the BGM for other works).Examples of the application of BGMs for the storage of liquid waste in mining containment reservoirs in Canada, Guatemala and Peru will also be given.For each example given, reasons are supplied that supported the choice of BGMs by the clients and consultants, drawn from the following advantages of the BGM:BGMs have excellent puncture strength, due to the internal polyester reinforcement, as well as excellent ultraviolet resistance. This often eliminates the need for a cushion geotextile or cover soil over the BGM.BGMs have a very long life expectancy, in excess of 300 years, in subsoil conditions (Breul et al, 2004).BGMs can be installed in very harsh climatic conditions. They are suitable for high wind environments as their heavy mass per square metre makes them resistant to wind uplift. The low coefficient of thermal expansion means that BGMs are suitable for installation in mines where very low or very high temperatures are expected. This reduces construction delays and allows for a quicker use of the mining facility.The fact that the BGM can be installed by the mine’s own workforce, after appropriate training from the BGM manufacturer, allows for a more flexible construction sequence on the mine.Ability of the BGM to connect to other materials such as concrete, steel, rock and other geomembranes that may be on the mine site.The technical advantages of a BGM enabled the engineering consultants to prepare solutions for their mining clients that had a lower environmental risk, had a faster completion schedule and were overall a cheaper option than with a polymeric geomembrane.CITATION:Breul, B and McIlwraith, R, 2015. At the WMC Resources Phosphate Hill operation, monitoring the quality of the ore delivered by the mine to the beneficiation plant is of prime importance to ensure the fertilizer is produced cost-effectively through the various stages of production and meets customer quality requirements. P2O5 and Fe2O3 are among the critical-to-quality elements. Fe2O3 is a key performance driver as it is an impurity that adversely impacts some of the chemical processes. The ore is supplied to the plant on a conveyor belt that is equipped with an automatic sampler. Increments are taken off the flowing ore stream at regular time intervals. A variographic experiment was conducted to investigate sampling strategies capable of estimating ore properties over a 12-hour shift to a nominated level of precision. The combination of individual increments into a shift composite was included among the strategies that were assessed. The experiment involved collecting data at regular time intervals and preparing variograms to characterise the feed-grade variability on the conveyor belt. Duplicates were also collected to assist in quantifying the precision of the subsampling stages of the sampling protocol and assay accuracy was monitored with matrix-matched standards. Various sampling schemes were evaluated by combining geostatistical techniques and the sampling theory of Pierre Gy. The following parameters were varied: the number of increments, the increment-size reduction leading to the composite, the masses of the subsequent sampling stages and the number of analytical determinations. This paper describes the planning of the variogram experiment, the various phases of data collection and the methodology used to process the data. It discusses the development of some of the sampling schemes that were considered.

Springvale Colliery is an underground longwall mine situated approximately 10 km north-west of Lithgow in the western coalfields of New South Wales. Following a full-scale review of the mineÆs ventilation system in mid-2010, it was clear that the mine by early 2013 would become ventilation constrained as a result of the increasing size of the mine workings, the predicted worsening tailgate conditions and plans to introduce a fourth continuous miner unit. This realisation led Springvale to embark on a major upgrade of the mine ventilation system that would meet short-term and life-of-mine (LOM) requirements.Included in the upgrade project was the installation of a new high pressure centrifugal main exhaust fan that is capable of overcoming the high resistances imposed frequently on the circuit by restrictions in the tailgate airway. The new fan featuring a 2.5 MW motor is designed to be capable of operating at a quantity of 250 m3/s at a pressure of 7.9 kPa, a substantial improvement over the previous system, which had an operating duty of approximately 145 m3/s at 1.9 kPa. The new fan is of a centre hung design and features a backup diesel motor to maintain ventilation in the event of a power outage.Structural engineering analysis determined that under the operation of the new main fan the existing standard of ventilation control devices (VCDs) at Springvale would not be adequate to withstand the increase in differential pressures. As such, an upgrade of critical VCDs was undertaken utilising a novel high flexural strength (9 MPa) shotcrete and thin spray-on liner, which help serve to safeguard the structural integrity of the appliances and prevent increased leakage as roadway conditions at VCD sites deteriorate over time (a serious problem in many areas of the workings at Springvale).In addition to the main ventilation system upgrade, a separate upgrade focusing on improving development face ventilation was also undertaken. This upgrade included the purchase of two high capacity (22 m3/s) variable inlet vane (VIV) auxiliary fans to facilitate comfortable development face ventilation.The upgrade of the mine ventilation system at Springvale has been three years in the making, but has removed a major business risk in that it has afforded mine planning and operational flexibility (a fourth unit can now be introduced) for the LOM, and importantly provided unprecedented levels of comfort to operators at the working faces where previously ventilation and heat issues were frequently reported. THE absence of any locality maps of the district of Morobe has been seriously felt by mining engineers engaged on the goldfields, and as it was evident at the beginning of operations that the administration would be unable to make good this deficiency, ascheme for making rapid traverses was worked out, and in all subsequent travelling the necessary records were kept for the construction of a reliable reconnaissance map of the Bulolo goldfield and its approaches (see Plate 1.). Since all the field work had tobe carried out without encroaching on primary duties, the compilation of sufficient data was a somewhat lengthy business. It was found that in this r;ough country a pedometer was useless, as it was impossible to calibrate it for the variation in length ofpace between climbing semi-precipices and walking over level country. Further, the native tracks "meander" so excessively that the only method of calculating air-line distance is by timing, and a knowledge of what the timing represents, and until a 10kg experience had been gained in the time taken to cover known distances in various types of-country, one could not feel competent to estimate sufficiently accurately. It was found that reliability could be attained only when walking at nearly top pace. Inregard to aeroplane traverses, results were reliable only when the air was fairly still.BEARINGSIn arriving at the bearing between main traverse points, the method used was to keep a "boy" about two chains- behind when marching and sight back on him, standing, at about two-chain intervals. "Problematic issues in materials handling applications are often amplified in the iron ore industry due to the relatively high density of the ore as well as the abrasive nature of the product. One of the main issues arising from the handling of iron ore is excessive wear, with two applications typically suffering accelerated wear issues being transfer chutes and conveyor belts. These wear issues are problematic due to additional capital costs, but mainly due to the associated downtimes resulting in the accelerated wear. WMC has mined the Perseverance disseminated orebody exclusively by SLC (sublevel cave) methods. Deteriorating ground conditions in the vicinity of an orebody inflection forced a re-evaluation of future mining at Perseverance and a strategy to drop down below the inflection zone and recommence the cave was implemented. This strategy has led to increased production at higher grades, resulting in lower costs and better mill recoveries. This paper describes the evolution of mine planning, development, support and production strategies through the successful process of implementing the ædrop-downÆ and re-establishing the SLC.

The Doc Run Company and its predecessors have been mining for over 130 years utilising the room and pillar mining method. This method has left approximately 20 per cent of the orebody in the remaining pillars. The original design and planning for the mines did not include extensive pillar extraction. This paper summarises the introduction of the pillar extraction and backfill techniques which have been implemented since 1991. These techniques include the use of low cost fill walls up to 20 in in height and the use of stinger trucks for topping off the fill. In conjunction with these accomplishments, much experience and confidence has been gained in the use of numerical modelling as a method of predicting pillar stability as the mining of pillars progresses. These advances have led to pillar extraction hecoming a major portion of the overall production and have added to the mine life of Doe Run's six operating mines.

"Evolution Mining is the sole owner of the Mt Rawdon open cut operation, located 75 km south-west of Bundaberg in Queensland, Australia (Figure 1). It is a massive, volcanically hosted, low-grade gold deposit that exhibits excellent characteristics conducive to low cost mining and treatment.In 2014, Mt Rawdon began investigating initiatives to deliver higher mill throughputs without any significant capital expenditure or modifications to the existing processing plant. Various studies have shown throughput increases are possible by applying more blast energy, essentially by reducing feed size through blasting and leaving less work for the comminution circuits (Brent et al, 2013; Ziemski, 2011; Workman and Eloranta, 2003).Given that 53 per cent of energy used on a mine site is consumed by the comminution circuit, with only two per cent being consumed by drill and blast (Smith, 2013), it makes logical sense for a mining operation to align their drill and blast with their processing plant. The term commonly used when exploring this relationship is a ‘Mine to Mill’ program.Over nearly 12 months, various blasting options and Mine to Mill methodologies were tested at Mt Rawdon. Throughout the journey, it was abundantly clear that the Mine to Mill initiative is not as simple as making one technical or physical change and expecting an improvement. Rather, true sustainable improvements demand a paradigm shift across both the mining and processing cultures, where all departments are aligned and working towards the one outcome. This true overarching Mine to Mill mentality, enabled by Vistis™ 250 high energy bulk explosive, ultimately led to a sustained increase in throughput and profitability of the Mt Rawdon operation.Citation:Wallace, G and Morton, D, 2016. A search for the keyword nano reveals that it has not made a significant entry into the mineral processing research literature. In contrast, the terms micelle, colloid, interface, and monolayer are well established there. By considering nanoscience as colloid and interface science at the nanoscale, it is claimed that several previous and current investigations in the broad field of mineral processing fall under the umbrella of nanoscience. Several examples from hydrometallurgical processing systems (invisible gold and activated carbon in gold extraction; monolayers, reverse micelles, and microemulsions in solvent extraction; nanobiofilms and nanoparticles in biohydrometallurgy) are highlighted in support of this view.

The Ambuklao and Binga Rehabilitation Project is a 175 MW hydro power project currently under construction across dual sites in the north region of Luzon Island, Philippines. When it was built in 1956, the Ambuklao Dam harnessed the second largest hydro-electric reservoir in Asia. However, due to landslide erosion and prolonged silt infiltration caused by an earthquake in 1990, the power plant has been rendered inoperable since 1999.To bring the power generating facility back to life, the project scope entails the rehabilitation and construction of civil structures, shafts and tunnels. A major component of these works is the decommissioning of a section of the seven metre diameter headrace tunnel by installing a concrete plug. The headrace tunnel is part of a closed waterway system that connects the dam via a shaft, exhibiting a hydrostatic pressure of 13 bar (1300 kPa) at the location of the new tunnel plug. In addition, the power station ball valves have seized ajar and the damaged intake riser is unsafe toaccess thereby requiring the plugging operation to be carried out under live flowing conditions.Working under hydrostatic pressure and live conditions, the headrace plug will be an underwater tremie pour operation that includes drilling and concrete injection through blow out preventer caissons installed in the floor of an underground chamber above the tunnel. The purpose of this paper is to describe the key engineering and planning components involved in this operation including pre- and post-grouting, chamber crane, sonar, local water compensation, jet flushing, drilling, caisson installation, and concrete design, production, delivery and placement. The success of this task rests on the strategic preparation and operational management of risk and safety in a challenging rural environment.

The mining sector, a notably energy-intensive industry worldwide, is a major consumer of fossil fuels, leading to significant carbon emissions globally. The move towards electrification, coupled with advancements in battery technology, has redirected focus from traditional diesel-powered solutions to battery-powered alternatives. This paper introduces a novel mining haulage system, termed the Battery Trolley system, and examines its theoretical foundations, configurations, and operational processes. It offers a comprehensive analysis of the system’s characteristics and limitations. Through a hypothetical road simulation, the study analyses various battery mining trucks, calculating energy consumption based on force parameters and tailoring battery sizes to contemporary materials and technology. When assessing various battery truck alternatives—considering aspects such as battery size, effective payload, duty cycle, energy efficiency, productivity, and single-shift production—a range of performance outcomes and characters become apparent within the mining context. The findings indicate that Battery Trolley configurations, requiring smaller battery capacities, entail lesser compromises on effective payload. Consequently, these configurations achieve a higher duty cycle, reduced energy consumption per tonne, heightened productivity, and enhanced singleshift production capabilities compared to Battery-only alternatives. The comparative analysis of Battery Trolley with stationary charging (BT-S) and Battery Trolley – dynamic charging (BT-D) underlines that battery Trolley systems are capable of overcoming the challenges associated with battery size, thus successfully fulfilling the production demands of large truck applications in mining. This positions Battery Trolley systems as a more advantageous option for the decarbonisation of mining fleets, underscoring their potential in contributing to the sector’s sustainable evolution.

Resource estimates are the corner stone of technical and investment decision-making. Prior to mining, resource estimation uncertainty has the greatest potential to lead to poor investment decisions, despite a significant component of resource estimation uncertainty being unknowable at this critical stage in the mining cycle. This presents a conundrum to the resource geologist in terms of risk evaluation and resource classification. Ahead of mining, there is normally considerable focus on drill hole spacing analysis to determine the ‘optimal’ drill hole spacing, taking grade and geological continuity into account; cost-benefit analyses balance improved resource definition against cost; the law of diminishing returns and the exponential cost increases acting together as spacing is reduced. Typically, a lower limit to the drill hole spacing is identified. After completing the resource drilling to an agreed spacing, resource estimation is then undertaken. At this point it is common to attempt to bracket the resource estimation uncertainty. In many cases conditional simulation is used, based on a modelled, but largely assumed, variogram model. It is also assumed that the histogram of the available drill hole sample data is representative of the in-ground mineralisation. The purpose of this paper is not to diminish the importance of drill hole spacing and simulation studies, but rather to illuminate an important aspect of estimation uncertainty that, although previously recognised, is typically overlooked – the question of how representative the available data set is in characterising the true (but unknown) distribution of mineralisation. To do this, we lift the lid on one of OceanaGold’s former operations, the mined-out Globe Progress Mine, by resurrecting a high quality, close-spaced, reverse circulation (RC) grade control data set. The Globe Progress Mine is within the West Coast Region of New Zealand, it was closed and transitioned to rehabilitation in 2016 and is now known as the Reefton Restoration Project. The exhaustive Globe Progress grade control data was used to repeatedly ‘redrill’ the deposit by extracting 35 m × 35 m spaced subsets from the original 5 m × 5 m spaced grade control data. Utilising closely spaced grade control data removed the need for assumptions regarding short range continuity, which are necessary with forward-looking analyses that are based upon broader spaced resource drilling. The extraction process used a nearest neighbourhood algorithm, repeatedly moving the origin in 5 mE, or 5 mN increments. Individual resource estimates were then completed for each of the extracted drill hole data sets (49 in total) as well as a grade control estimate based upon the exhaustive data set. Whilst the data unpinning each of the 49 estimates changed, the geological assumptions, variography, and modelling parameters remained constant. This approach was taken to isolate the impact of changing the input data. The 49 estimates were then compared against each other and the grade control estimate. The mean of all 49 sensitivity estimates was close to that of the grade control estimate in terms of contained gold, tonnes and grade. Whilst it is acknowledged that the grade control estimate itself is subject to some degree of estimation uncertainty, the close match between the average of the 49 estimates and the grade control estimate suggests that the resource estimation methodology is reasonable and appropriate. Whilst this comparison is important, the focus of this study is on the component of estimation uncertainty related to the underlying data, and this is reflected in the spread across the estimates. The spread across the 49 global estimates (highest to lowest) for this particular Mineral Resource Estimation Conference 2023 | Perth, Australia | 24–25 May 2023 142 case study was found to be significant (approximately 20 per cent in grade and metal) and that is attributable solely to the underlying data. This exercise quantifies a component of the estimation uncertainty that is inherent to all drill hole data and is distinct from the uncertainties associated with modelling methodology choices, sample and subsample quality and drill hole spacing-related interpolation uncertainty. Importantly, this uncertainty is unknowable prior to mining; we can only directly compare the resource drill hole data against grade control data after mining has taken place. For the case study, approximately 65 per cent of the estimates fell within 5 per cent of the grade control estimate for contained-gold, suggesting that for many projects the histogram of drill hole data is unlikely to differ noticeably from that of the in-ground resource. However, about 15 per cent of the estimates in this study differed by more than 7.5 per cent, suggesting that a not-insignificant proportion of estimates will be materially compromised. Whether or not the available drill hole data is representative comes down to the ‘luck of the draw’ and cannot be known at the time of resource estimation. Given the challenge of attempting to evaluate forward-looking estimation uncertainty, a component of which that can only be quantified retrospectively, what should we do as resource geologists? What are the implications for risk evaluation, resource classification and reconciliation? Furthermore, without rigorous post-mining data checks, resource geologists may conflate suboptimal modelling with the shortcomings of the underlying data. An example of this problem is discussed in the following section.

Achieving quick underground access after the completion of an open pit mine can be critical to maintaining project value and ensuring regular ore feed to the mill. This paper outlines the design and construction for two portals in an active open pit to commence underground development quickly whilst installing appropriate ground control to maintain long term access in an uncertain setting. Implementation of the portal designs was complicated by the change in underground design from hangingwall access to footwall access late in the life of the open pit due to preferable ground conditions. The portal locations did not have easy access for ground support installation integrated into the pit design due to the timing of the underground design changes. Practical implementation of the ground support systems subsequently became a key part of the project. Intact rock strength, rock mass characteristics, gradational weathering / alteration profile and structural information were modelled against pit displacement monitoring as the basis from which the portals were located and ground support schemes designed. Conditions around one of the portals necessitated numerical modelling to estimate the appropriate level of ground control for long term stability. The design was completed whilst the open pit was actively on-going and the portal areas not entirely exposed. The rock mass assessment and analysis for the two portals indicated different ground support scheme capacities would be required. The expected level of control for one of the portals also necessitated the use of monitoring with extensometers and load cells to ensure the rock mass response and ground support scheme performed as planned. Construction of the portals demonstrates the benefit of a considered design process, a plan which allows practical installation of ground support schemes where access is limited, the benefit of ongoing monitoring to ensure performance remains within design limits and the challenges involved working within an active pit with limited floor space.

The drive to maximise performance, reduce maintenance times, improve safety of operation and maintenance on mining equipment while keeping both operational and capital costs down has provided good nourishment to the creative thinking of designers of skip loading facilities for hoisting systems. Early systems were as simple as manual loading which evolved into a surge bin feeding a skip through a chute finally maturing into a measuring flask discharging into a chute to feed the skip and more recently high capacity skip feed conveyors. This paper will compare the concepts of the skip loading flask and the skip loading conveyor systems over a range of winding distances and hoisted tonnages. The comparison will draw on actual installations and review operational, maintenance and safety. An order of magnitude capital cost estimate will be used to complete the financial comparison. This will enable the reader to understand the concepts and costs and assist in selecting the appropriate skip loading system.

Black Rock Cave (BRC) is a sublevel cave which was developed in 2018–2020 and has been in production since November 2020. BRC is part of the Mount Isa Mines complex and extracts a leached orebody comprising of high-grade chalcocite ore, situated below the historic Black Rock Open Cut workings. The mine is owned by Mount Isa Mines and operated under contract with PYBAR Mining Services. In 2021 a number of rockfalls occurred throughout the mine and were increasing in frequency. This culminated in a major rockfall on the decline in June 2021, after which the decision was made to withdraw all persons from the mine, initiate rehabilitation and conduct further investigations to deduce a safe method to provide long-term support. The rockfall investigations have shown that the corrosive nature of the highly leached rock mass can consume a split set in less than 18 months. A review of potential corrosion resistant ground support methods concluded that steel split sets have a safe lifespan of six months at BRC, and that all workings must have corrosion resistant support installed prior to exceeding the safe life of the friction bolts. The review recommended the use of 4 m cable bolts as the most suitable method of corrosion resistant support. This new support system, and the requirement to rehabilitate all mine workings within the leached orebody, had an impact to the schedule and an effect on both equipment and manning levels at BRC. Accelerated jumbo rehab allowed access to the production levels within two months of the rockfall. Cable bolting then followed the jumbo bolting in all leached areas. The direct impact has been ten months of reduced production, due to night shift closures of the decline to enable cable bolting. The impact to the mine has been minimised by the small flexible team that enabled the mine plan to change rapidly and often to accommodate the challenging conditions. In less than two months from the rockfall event, production had resumed. Within ten months of concluding that the mine required; full rehabilitation, a new support system and a full re-schedule, normal mining operations had restarted, with pre-event productions rates being achieved.

Evaluating the resources and reserves in a mineral deposit requires many interdependent subjective decisions. The decision of stationarity is arguably the most important. This decision includes: the choice of domains that subset the entire deposit, modelling the boundaries of each domain, and understanding and considering the nature of the contacts between domains. Reasonable choices are made in consideration of the geological context, the available data, the goals of the study and the available resources for the study. This paper reviews aspects of the decision of stationarity in modern resource assessment with a focus on quantifying uncertainty and using numerical/statistical tools to help the geomodeller. The use of volume/distance functions to quantify uncertainty in domain limits is particularly important and is presented in detail. The use of contact plots provides help with the continuity of grades across domain boundaries. Realisations are not assembled as a branching combinatorial of all possibilities, but as a set of realisations that provide a measure of uncertainty. This paper amounts to a definition of stationarity for modern resource assessment.

Large metallurgical complexes are substantial users of energy, water and assets. To improve the effectiveness of energy and assets the quality of the data and events become paramount for real-time operational management. A lack of resources at the local operations and at the enterprise makes it impossible to process the sea of information and many projects have failed. As such, a novel approach for implementation of continuous improvements at the local level and innovations at the strategic level was implemented at all operating plants at Anglo American Platinum. Sixteen concentrators, three smelters and two refinery process systems were integrated to scale the information for manufacturing services at the local and enterprise level. The new capability of an enterprise real-time monitoring and diagnosis software infrastructure was available to implement many business strategies in tandem. Mineral and metallurgical processing knowledge is used to simplify the implementation of the data model. As such, asset monitoring, energy, production and process control management were implemented in an integrated approach reusing the same data but with different context and time horizons to have a standard methodology for local root cause analysis. This paper will highlight a sustainability management approach to change and empower the local and strategic team to collaborate using a new approach for adaptive reporting and condition-based event management and notifications. The results based on the integrated and collaborative team efforts will be presented.
