THE ideal fuel for burning ceramic wares is the one that, among other characteristics, has little or no sulfur. For that reason wood was long considered the most desirable fuel but its high cost has practically eliminated its used except in regions where it is very abundant or other circumstances warrant its choice. The fuels commonly employed are natural and producer gas, oil, and coal. The last named is undoubtedly the most important, not only in this country but abroad. Occasionally anthracite is used but the larger part is bituminous. The quality of the coal used depends on the kind and the value of the products being manufactured. For some materials, such as common brick, hollow block, etc., the quality of the coal is of less importance than in the manufacture of polychrome terra cotta, pottery, porcelain, etc. It is obvious that in burning clays that contain notable amounts of pyrite, marcasite or gypsum, as is the case with many common clays, the sulfur content of the fuel is of much less importance. The permissible amount of sulfur in the coal used will depend on the kind of product being manufactured. THE principle of sliding or graduation in royalties is accomplished either by the block, period, cumulative, or class method. The block method calls for a very low royalty rate on all oil produced up to. a certain amount. This amount would normally be that which is believed to suffice to repay the cost of the well. A higher rate would be charged after the well is making a profit. This method, common in many industries, is peculiarly inadaptable to any industry such as this where the productivity per day of the units gradually and inevitably decreases. This, for reasons given later, is because it forces an early abandonment of the well and so offends against conservation. In the period method, the royalty rate is changed by some definite amount when the well produces less than a specified quantity per day or other given unit of time. While simple to explain, it operates badly because a great deal is made to depend upon a small reduction in production, whereas the reduction as a matter of fact declines rather erratically owing to the exigency of lease management, connecting of tankage, and vagaries of the gaugers. These disadvantages are obviated by the cumulative method. In this method, all the production less than a certain amount per week has one rate of royalty, or none at all, and the oil produced in excess of that amount pays an additional rate of royalty. In the long run the calculation is probably no greater than with the period method, for simple tables will be published and printed in the oil papers that can be cut out, enabling quick readings to be made. Even without the table the calculation is easy with the few royalty rates, two or three, which would be used. In this method, the amount paid in royalty declines gradually, rather than suddenly as in the period method.

The latest revised edition of Mr. C. A. stetefeldt's book on the Lixiviation of Silver-Ores, which appeared very recently, contains no mention of the volatilization of silver in chloridizing-roasting—an omission which is the more remarkable in view of the fact that in former editions of the work this important subject was noticed. Moreover, Mr. Stetefeldt has discussed it to some extent in his paper on " The Stetefeldt Furnace," * in which he criticised certain statements made by me before the Colorado Scientific Society in May, 1893, in a paper entitled " A Review of the Russell Process;" ? and Mr. Morse, in his paper on " The Lixiviation of Silver-Ores by the Russell Process at Aspen, Colorado," $ has given statistics showing the loss of silver by volatilization (including the dustloss, which Mr. Morse estimates at not more than 1 per cent.) on more than 30,000 tons of ore roasted, to have been 9.16 per cent. The matter must certainly be deemed important enough to warrant me in returning to it, and offering, with the aid of the figures made public since my first paper, a reply to the criticisms of Mr. Stetefeldt. Recrystallization of aluminum single crystals after plastic extension is carefully studied in relation to the structure of the deformed matrix. The shapes of the new grains are analyzed with regard to slip planes and to the presence or absence of deformation bands. A mechanism by which the orientations of the grains are related to the parent lattice is described. EXPERIMENTS previously reported&apos; have been extended to develop some of the characteristics of the new crystals which are formed on annealing axially strained crystals whose deformational characteristics had been documented with special care. Thus, the presence of deformation bands affects the growth contours of the crystals, some of the strained crystals produced single crystals anew, and some, polycrystals, on annealing, while others merely "recovered" or "polygonalized" after the 600°C annealing treatment generally adopted in these tests. In the matter of orientational relationships between new crystals and the strained matrix, the present experiments have added little to previous experience, which had demonstrated great variety in the range of orientations encountered and no simple theory or correlation. For example, there has been ample evidence for the predominance in various face-centered cubic metals of a favored orientational relationship; viz., a rotation of 30° to 40° around a <1ll> axis, between grains growing in a matrix with a strong single orientation texture and the matrix itself.&apos;-&apos; This reorientation has been interpreted by various investigators in support of both the "oriented nucleation" and the "oriented growth" hypothesis. In the case of axially extended single crystals of aluminum, no general relationship, such as the one stated above, can be used to correlate the orientations of the recrystallized grains with that of the original crystal. Thus, Carpenter and Elama and Burgers and Basart7 were content to assume that the orientational relationships so developed were random in nature. Mathewson, however, in the Campbell Lecture of 1943 "rgued on the basis of <112> slip that a complex strain, chiefly characterized by rotation around a variable axis in the slip plane combined with a principal rotation around the pole of the slip plane, could be responsible for such devious relationships. Nevertheless, owing to the limited data now available dealing with orientational relationships between new grains and the single crystals strained in tension from which they have recrystallized, no adequate examination of the above generalization could be made. Here, there is the disturbing preliminary condition that any desired orientational relationship may be expressed by means of two rotations about mutually perpendicular axes, so the process lacks a certain critical flavor and any successful choice of axes meeting certain theoretical requirements could be replaced by another differently selected pair. With this reservation clearly in mind the process of double rotations, as previously indicated, was used to relate the orientations of the single crystals which grew out of the strained single crystalline matrix and was construed as certain evidence in favor of the theory of incongruent shearing action proposed by Mathewsons as a necessary element in the (111) slip process with close-packed metals. A Discussion of Mr. Hall&apos;s paper, read at the Washington Meeting, February, 1905. R. H. SWEETSER, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. (communication to the Secretary*) :-The recent work of furnace No. 1 of The Algoma Steel Co., at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, using for fuel, first all charcoal, then a mixture of charcoal and coke, and finally all coke, upsets the estimates given by Mr. Hall in the last two paragraphs of his interesting paper. Furnace No. 1 was built for a charcoal-furnace, and it was run on charcoal fuel from March 6 until July 9, 1905; then, for a week, a mix¬ture of charcoal and coke was used, and, since then, coke alone has been the only fuel. It is to be regretted that at no time, during the run on charcoal, was there enough charcoal on hand and " in sight&apos;" to warrant blowing the furnace as hard as it should have been blown. During April and May the supply of charcoal limited the amount of blast to about 8,000 cu. ft. of air per min.; in June, to about 8,900 cubic feet. For a few days in July about 10,000 cu. ft. were blown, and then the maximum daily output, 173 tons (2,240 1b.), was reached. At all times the quality of the charcoal was poor, having been made from wood cut from three to four years before. Doubtless this furnace could have produced .200 tons of iron per day, even with this quality of charcoal, provided the supply had been sufficient; and with good charcoal I see no reason why it could not make as much iron per day as it has made with coke. During the one week of using a mixture of charcoal and coke, the changes in quantity of blast and composition of the slag followed each other so closely that no single condition could last long on the furnace. Secretary E. H. Benjamin, of the California Miners&apos; Association, has proposed and begun, in co-operation with the testing laboratory of the University of California, at Berkeley, a series of tests which should prove of great interest and practical use to all persons making extensive application of steel wire cables, and especially to miners who run them in deep mines. Mr. Benjamin is endeavoring to obtain pieces of cable both new, and old and worn, from every deep mine of importance on the Pacific Coast, together with all the data obtainable concerning their manufacture and particular use. Pieces from each sample will be broken ill the laboratory before mentioned: and as far as possible the effects of winding around drums or pulleys ; of sudden starting and stopping when loaded; of heavy shocks, and of the general wear and tear of the cables, will be ascertained by these tests. The Olsen testing-machine of 200,000 pounds capacity will be used to break the cables, and the rupturing force, in different instances, will be applied slowly and also rapidly, in order to make the tests comparable as far as possible with the practical use of the cables themselves. All information and data available should be obtained for each specimen sent to the laboratory, the name of the manufacturer, the date of making, strength of cable when new and unrusted, as well as the circumstances and conditions of the practical use of the cable. Having this information before us, we shall be able to tell, approximately at least, the effects of age, rust, wear and tear, shocks, etc.; and perhaps be enabled to draw the line of limitation beyond which it would be no longer safe to use a cable of known manufacture. Moreover, by means of such tests we may, perhaps, he able to recommend worn cables for other uses, less severe in character, thereby prolonging the life of their effective usefulness. The development and use of short-lived radioactive tracer methods for the onstream determination of residence time distributions in large-scale ball mills is described. Tests are reported on a pilot-plant ball mill with 0.43 m diameter and 0.86 m length and on an industrial mill with 1.83 m diameter and 2.74 m length. Tests with different tracer feed sizes indicate that the residence time distributions on both mills are independent of charge particle size. Similar tests are planned for a large ball mill of 4.57 m diameter and 9.30 m length. No safety problems were encountered in these tests and none are anticipated in tests of the larger mill.

ThE deterioration of the magnetic properties of silicon-steel core materials during service (magnetic aging) is quite undesirable. Although some information about the effects of impurity elements on magnetic properties is available, 1,2 magnetic aging that occurs at low temperatures has not been extensively studied. Moreover, the microscopic techniques used by earlier workers were not suitable for study of fine metastable phases that are precipitated at relatively low temperatures. Recently, several investigators3,4 successfully used transmission electron microscopy in the study of low-temperature precipitation in Fe-C, Fe-N, and Fe-Mn-C alloys. IN the first section of- this article, published- Feb. 4, the author reviewed the his¬tory of iron ore mining in New Jersey, listed the reserves and possible markets of this ore, and discussed the role of Lake Superior and foreign ores in domestic steel production. This concluding section of the article emphasizes the metal¬lurgical value, future markets and mining coats of Jersey ores. Mr. Roche&apos;s thesis is that industry can profit both metallurgically and econom¬ically through a greater use of Jersey ores --that these orebodies are as yet prac¬tically unexploited, and con¬stitute a valuable national re¬serve fully worthy of careful consideration by Mid-West¬ern steel makers.

Gentlemen:-I herewith present a report on some of the more important activities of the Institute for the year 1921. The present incumbent took. over the active management of the Secretary&apos;s office on the first of July and his, work was facilitated, while becoming acquainted with the routine of the office, by the constant and., kindly assistance of the former, Secretary, Mr. Stoughton, during the following three months, and that no interruption occurred inn its regular and smooth operation is due to him and to the Assistant Secretary, who has always been ready to give the benefit of his experience and assistance. MINING AND METALLURGY Through the efforts of President Ludlow and the generous assistance of one of our members, coupled with the excellent work of Major Barbour, MINING AND METALLURGY has, during recent months, shown constant improvement, which could not have taken place, however, had it not been, for the support given by a number of our contributing members. We have every reason to feel encouraged with respect to the quality of the publication and its cost of production. For the year 1921, the net cost of MINING AND METALLURGY was about fifty cents per member, per annum. Occasional letters are received criticizing the Board for producing this publication, but they are more than offset by letters of approval. When the, full purpose of the publication is appreciated, criticism ceases. The elimination of MINING AND METALLURGY and reversion to free distribution of all papers to all members, whether desired or not, would mean such a heavy additional expense that the number of papers would have to be much curtailed. The generous cooperation of members in sending for only such papers as they particularly desired has saved, the Institute thousands of dollars. A plan is being worked out that will materially assist in securing a prompt distribution to members of all pamphlets dealing with subjects in which they are especially interested.

In 1951 the first ton of iron was shipped from West Africa; ten years later the total export exceeded 4 million tons, and an optimistic forecast for 1970 indicates a production capacity of something around 40 to 50 million tons. The quality of the ore varies from normal hematitic concentrates, through naturally enriched hematitic direct shipping ores with comparatively high content of ore fines, to dense, hard, rich lump ores of magmatic character. West Africa is largely composed of folded Pre-cambrian rocks trending generally northeast to southwest. They are exposed over about one third of West Africa and are part of the vast continental plateau which has an average elevation of about 1300 ft in this area.

Annealed Fe-Al alloys do not react readily to form AlN when held at 500ºC in NH3-H2 gas mixtures, but do so upon the introduction of dislocatims. Nuclea-tion of the nitride phase occurs on dislocation sites. In turn, the growth of the aluminum nitride particles causes the ferrite phase to yield plastically, generating more dislocations for the nucleation process. The nitride phase extracted from an Fe-2 pct A1 alloy nitrogenated at 500°C was identified as stoichio-metric aluminum nitride with a hexagonal crystal lattice. THIS investigation reveals the role that dislocations play in initiating and sustaining the nitriding reaction in Fe-A1 alloys. As early as 1931 the work of Meyer and Hobrock1 suggested that the initiation of the nitriding reaction could involve a nucleation controlled process. Recently Bohnenka2 depicted the gas-phase nitriding process below 600°C as one of mixed control limited by nitrogen penetration through the surface, by nitrogen diffusion, by aluminum diffusion, and by nucleation of the nitride phase, Fig. l(a). In our research in a comparable alloy (0.57 pct Al) at 575ºC, we have observed a nitrogenation which we feel is better described by Fig. l(b). In the case of a 2 pct-A1 alloy partially nitrided at 500°C we propose the profiles shown in Fig. l(c). For a complete and accurate description of the process, a concentration profile of the dislocation density in the test specimen would be needed. EXPERIMENTAL Nitrogenization was conducted between 500" and 575°C in a variety of NH3-H2 gas mixtures on three Fe-A1 alloys: 1) zone-refined iron + 0.16 i 0.2 pct Al—levita-tion melt, 2) zone-refined iron + 0.57 0.02 pct Al— levitation melt, 3) plastiron + 2 pct Al—melted by induction heating. To demonstrate the effect of dislocations on reactivity, both cold-worked and annealed samples were investigated. All nitrogenation rate studies were conducted gravimetrically with a gold-plated invar balance4 contained in a gas-flow system. To avoid contamination of the specimens in the reaction zone of the system, the reaction chamber was constructed of high-purity dense alumina. The activity of nitrogen was fixed by specific NH3-H2 gas mixtures whose compositions were continually monitored by calibrated thermal conductivity gages and checked by chemical analysis. Variations of ± 0.1 pct NH3 could easily be detected by both methods. Throughout this paper the activity of nitrogen is defined as PN3 /PH23/2 , where PNH3, and Ph2 are partial pressures in atmospheres. Electron transmission, density measurements, and chemical analyses were made on specimens before and after nitrogenating in order to reveal structural and chemical changes. Similar studies as well as X-ray diffraction studies were conducted on nitride extractions from the nitrogenated 2 pct-A1 alloy. These extractions were obtained by the use of an anhydrous bromine-methyl acetate solution which dissolves the iron and leaves the insoluble nitrides as a residue. Hardness profiles were obtained on cross-sections of partially nitrided specimens to demonstrate the extent of nitriding through the thickness of the specimens. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The nitrogen activity in the NH3-H2, atmospheres was never allowed to reach a level capable of producing iron nitride (Fe4N). Hence, the term nitriding as used in this paper refers only to the formation of aluminum nitride whereas nitrogenation refers to the total uptake of nitrogen regardless of how it is distributed throughout the alloy. The weight increases observed during the initial stage of a nitrogenating treatment are due primarily to the solution of nitrogen in the ferrite phase, particularly when starting with annealed specimens. Because this initial nitrogenation rate in the case of the 0.57 pct A1 alloy, see Figs. 2 and 3(a), was most rapid the weight change that occurred thereafter might be attributed to the nitriding reaction with the exception of a small weight increment due to the irreversible pickup of oxygen by aluminum. The oxygen (<70 ppm) came from traces of H2O and 0, in the hydrogen and ammonia gases. On the basis of discrepancies between total weight increase and the increase in the nitrogen content of the sample as determined by chemical analysis, it was estimated and later established by activation analysis, that as much as 200 ppm of oxygen were taken up by a fully nitrided Fe-0.57 pct A1 specimen at 575°C. Most of the oxygen could have been picked up from the nitriding atmosphere on the surface of the samples during cooling to room temperature. Under existing economic conditions, the treatment of gold ores occupies an outstanding position in metallurgical activity. The increased price of gold has automatically brought about a reclassification of old dumps and low-grade orebodies, and many that formerly were considered valueless are now being vigorously investigated and worked. This situation has developed problems that have taxed the ingenuity and ability of metallurgists to the utmost. Some gold ores give a high extraction of gold by standardized methods of treatment; other ores of apparently similar character yield but a relatively small percentage of their gold when treated by the same processes. Surface Contamination The experience gained by microscopic study of numerous gold ores and tailings has shown that there are pronounced differences in the physical characteristics of the minerals composing them, more especially of the gold. Repeated studies of tailings from flotation and cyanidation of gold ores has established the fact that surface contaminations on gold particles are often directly responsible for high gold losses; comparison of gold particles isolated from flotation concentrates and the resulting tailings have showed that the clean gold has been recovered and the tarnished or contaminated gold invariably lost in the tailing. Obviously, it is not possible to make such a comparison of gold ores treated by cyanidation, as the clean gold has been taken into solution; but when the gold found in cyanide tailing has a tarnished or coated surface, one may infer, with a reasonable degree of certainty, that the clean gold has been extracted. This premise is supported by experimental evidence obtained by isolating particles of tarnished gold and exposing them to cyanide solution in small parting cups. In one such experiment, tarnished gold particles picked from a cyanide tailing showed but slight evidence 01 dissolving at the end of 27 days. We have studied the effect of adsorbed sulfur on the surface self-diffusion of copper using eight diflerent surface orientations and the grain boundary grooving method. The eight orientations studied were the four lying near the low-index surfaces—(loo), (Ill), and two directions in the (110)-plus four higher-index surfaces. Surface-diffusion measurements were made over a range of HZS concentrations (in Hz) from 3 to 1500 ppm between 830°and 1050°C. The results can be divided into two groups—Group 1 contains the two (110) surfaces while Group 2 contains the remaining six surfaces. In Group 1, increasing the temperature increases the effect of Hz S on DS for the Hz S range 5700 ppvn. Qs and Do increase with increasing H2S concentration in this Hz S range. Beyond this range, increasing the temperature decreases this effect on D,; also Q, and Do decrease. In Group 2, increasing the telnperature decreases the effect of H2 S on D, for the H2S range studied, and Qs and Do decrease with increasing Hz S concentration. In any study of surface phenomena, there invariably arises the question of the possible presence of and effect of adsorbed impurities. Such questions are well-founded since the presence of adsorbed atoms can sometimes produce marked changes in the kinetics of surface-energy-driven processes. In the last few years, values of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, D,, have been determined on a variety of metals by studying the decay of scratches or the growth of grain boundary grooves.L~3-L0~L3 Yet there has been relatively little work done in which the concentration of an adsorbed impurity was systematically varied and the effects observed. Work of this sort would provide some basis in fact for the assertions often made about the ro1.e of adsorbed impurities in the differences between the results of different workers in different atmospheres and on different metals. It also is relevant to those cases in which surface monolayers produce profound effects in commercially important processes. The most marked example of such effects is the ability of nickel or palladium to increase the sintering rate of tungsten by many orders of magnitude.&apos; The aim of this work was to study the effect of sulfur partial pressures on the surface self-diffusion of copper. It was felt that this in conjunction with a study of the degree of adsorption and type of active sites involvedL8 would provide a wide range of data for one system and hopefully lead to some insight into the mechanism by which sulfur adsorption influences copper diffusion. The main reasons for choosing the Cu-S system were, first, faceting was reported not to accompany the adsorption of sulfur. This is required if our experimental technique is to work. Second, Oudar has determined a high temperature adsorption isotherm for this system, an event which puts the Cu-S system almost in a class by itself.I4 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Initially, we considered studying the effect of an adsorbed impurity on surface self-diffusion of copper using isolated (or single) scratch smoothing as the technique and oxygen as the impurity. Copper was chosen as the material because the effects of orientation and anisotropy of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, D,, of copper in a dry hydrogen atmosphere had been studied extensively by Gjostein&apos; and by Shewmon and ~hoi.~,~ The isolated scratch technique was chosen because both the effects of surface orientation and anisotropy of D, in a given surface could be easily studied with this method.~ Oxygen was tried as the impurity because Robertson and Shewmon""~ had studied its adsorption on copper at 1000°C over the range of oxygen partial pressures of 10"22 to 10-l3 atm. After several preliminary runs, it became evident that neither the scratch technique nor the impurity oxygen would be satisfactory for this work. Scratching deforms an annealed surface so that the region near the scratches recrystallizes, thereby disrupting the scratch profiles. One can avoid this by deforming the specimen sufficiently before scratching to give complete recrystallization on subsequent heating.4 However, as a result of Gjostein&apos;s success in scratching and annealing undeformed gold single crystals without local recrystallization,13 we attempted something similar with copper single crystals using a 0.7-mil diamond phonograph needle mounted in a Tukon hardness tester. All specimens recrystallized upon being annealed. Also, some copper specimens were sent to Gjostein to be scratched using his technique. The results were the same. As a result, the scratch technique was dropped in favor of the grooving of symmetric grain boundaries. Preliminary work using oxygen showed that faceting began to occur before oxygen adsorption had any measurable effect on D, at 938°C (at Pbo/P, = 0.12). Since heavy faceting would interfere with the measurement, we decided to use a sulfur-containing atmosphere (H2S/H2). Work by Oudar and Benard&apos; and Robertson" showed that sulfur absorbed on copper and that faceting was not observed.

AN equipment manufacturer swallows a bitter pill when he sees his machinery improperly in- stalled and not used to the full potential. This frequently happens with vibrating screens. Screens can be classified according to the path of vibration imparted to the screen surface. On this basis there are: 1) vertical circle or modified circle throw, 2) horizontal circle or modified circle throw, 3) vertical linear reciprocation, 4) tilted linear reciprocation, and 5) horizontal linear reciprocation. The most versatile vibration for medium to coarse sizing is generally conceded to be the vertical circle produced by an eccentric or unbalanced shaft, but other types of vibration may be more suitable for certain screening operations, particularly in the finer sizes.

Recent publicationsl.2 establishing the presence of cross-slip in strained metallic single crystals oriented wholly within the area of single slip as predicted from the generalizations of Taylor and Elam3 described these markings as they appeared during the initial stages of the deformation process. At that time, the plane having a common glide direction with the primary slipping plane was reported as the cross-slip plane although the specific direction was not confirmed. Consequently, in continuation of the research, it seemed advisable to investigate the micro-graphic appearance of cross-slip together with the Laue back-reflection X ray analysis and stress-strain data during the later stages of the deformation process. Accordingly, a single crystal of brass (72.75 pct Cu, 0.01 pct Fe, 0.01 pct Pb, 27.23 pct Zn) was polished mechanically and repolished electrolytically after the manner described in the earlier paper.&apos; Three pairs of flat surfaces, parallel to the specimen axis, and (1) perpendicular to the plane containing the pole of the primary glide plane and the specimen axis, (2) perpendicular to the plane containing the pole of the cross-slip plane and the specimen axis, and (3) perpendicular to the plane containing the slip direction and the specimen axis, were polished mechanically and repolished electrolytically, resulting in a final minimum gauge diameter of 0.4864 in. in a gauge length of 3.36 in. The specimen was elongated in tension and load-extension readings were taken following the method described in the initial investigation.&apos; Observed reorientations were obtained from a series of Laue back-reflection photograms at the center and ends of the gauge length and at various positions around the circumference of the specimen. These were interpreted after the manner of A. B. Greninger.4 Cross-slip (Fig 1 and 2) was found with the first appearance of the primary slip clusters and usually joined members of these clusters. In addition, a third set of entirely different markings (Fig 3) could be noted. The displacement of this third set by the primary slip lines was measured as 8300 at. diam (3.04 microns). Since the specimen was carefully observed at high magnifications before any deformation and no markings of any type could be noted, it would appear that this third set was formed during the deformation process prior to the initiation of classical primary slip. Additional extensions produced no unusual change in the appearance of either cross-slip or the third set of markings. The number of lines increased with increasing elongation and appeared, generally, in areas where earlier markings were present. The continuity of the clusters of cross-slip lines in Fig 4, 5 and 6 illustrates that they are neither noticeably displaced by nor do they displace the primary lines at this stage. In Fig 7, cross-slip appears in a long narrow localized band approximately 45 degrees from the stress axis. This somewhat resembles a twin band except for the lack of a sharp boundary. After a shear of 0.257, suffcient additional glide occurred on the cross-slip plane to displace the primary slip lines (Fig 8). Generally, where a large number of cross-slip lines could be observed in an area on one flat surface, few cross-slip lines appeared on the diametrically opposite position on the parallel flat (Fig 9). These, of course, were not matched observations on the same glide ellipses. It was extremely difficult to make such comparisons. The third set of markings (Fig 10) was extensively displaced by glide on the primary slip planes. A plot of the width of primary slip clusters versus their displacement of the third set of lines is shown in Fig 11. The slope and the linearity of the plot suggest that each primary glide plane slips to a constant maximum value of shear before further slip is transferred to another plane. A shear value of 0.28 was determined in this case. Heidenreich5 has presented a similar schematic representation of glide for aluminum. After the specimen had attained an elongation of 51.8 pct, corresponding to a shear of 0.973, cross-slip appeared very prominently in certain areas as shown in Fig 12, yet at diametrically opposite positions very little cross-slip could be noted, Fig 13. Classical conjugate slip was found at this advanced stage in the deformation, Fig 14, which corresponds to the axial location shown at 12 in Fig 15. It should be noted that cross-slip occurs within the conjugate slip clusters and on the same plane as the cross-slip associated with the closely spaced primary lines which constitute a background in less distinct focus. The changes of line position and integral line breadth in the X-ray diffraction pattern of a polycvys-talline Cu-30Zn tensile test piece, incrementally loaded (and unloaded) up to fracture, have been an-alyzed in detail. The stacking-fault probahility, cv, increased linearly with increasing strain, E, wheveas the effective domain size, De(hkl), decreased with decreasing E-1 Over the greater part of the stress-strain curve the rate of work hardening was essentially constant (about 86 kg per sq mwz), and could be correlated with the slope of stage II of the single-crystal stress-strain curve. Consequently the theories of work hal-dening (particularly those parts relating to stage 11) as developed by Mott and Hivsch and others could be applied to the observations made on the polycrystalline brass. A relationship of the form Aa = Aao - MhklEhkl between the change, Aa, in the extrapolated lattice pararneter and the rvns strain, Ehkl, was derived and found to fit the results acceptably well. From this and other relationships developed in the papev it was estimated that the equilibrium stacking-fault energy of Cu-30Zn was between 8.4 and 12.5 ergs per sq cm, in fuirly close agreement with the (corvected) value obtained by Howie and Swann (1961)43 using transmission electron microscopy. The theory of work hardening in the jorm developed and recently presented by Hirsch (1964)3 successfully described all the pvesent observations. In order to test certain aspects of the theories of work hardening, as developed by Mott,1 Hirsch,2,3 Seeger et el,4-7 and others (for review see Nabarro, Basinski, and Holt8), several recent investigations have been concerned with relating the dislocation density, p, with the shear stress, 7 (and strain, y), applied to the specimen. The results of these investigations have shown that the square root of the dislocation density appears to be linearly related to the applied shear (or flow) stress for fcc as well as bcc metals and alloys. Furthermore, the relationship appeared to apply not only to the deformation of poly-crystalline specimens, but also to stages I and I1 of the deformation of single crystals. An expression of the form has thus come into wide use. Here b is the Burgers vector for a total dislocation, G is the shear modulus, and 70 and q are constants. A review9 of available values of q shows it to have values (at room temperature) in general between 0.3 and 0.6. Forms of Eq. [1] can be deduced from, or predicted by, the current theories, and the various constants adjusted so that they are compatible with the experimentally found value of q . No unique relationship has yet been found between the dislocation density and the applied shear strain. There are several serious objections to the use of Eq. 11]. In the first place, it relates the shear stress to the density of the dislocations without regard to their arrangement, type, or distribution; the significance of the relation may therefore be justly questioned.5 In the second place, the values of the experimental quantities usually substituted into Eq. [11 are those of the applied shear stress and the total dislocation density measured after unloaditzg. The dislocation density value that should in fact be used is that for the mobile dislocations present in the specimen when under the applied load.* Finally, in cases where the values used for p, the dislocation density, are those obtained by electron microscopy, p is subject to considerable error,&apos; both systematic and random. The corrections to be applied are still controversial. Dislocation densities can also be measured by etch-pit and other techniques,&apos;&apos; each having their specific limitations. An objective of the present investigation has been to obtain information about the dislocation configyration and distribution by analyzing the changes in the position and shape of X-ray diffraction profiles as a function of deformation. The X-ray techniques employed, also open to criticism, have certain advantages, however. Thus, although the X-rays diffract only from the surface layers to an effective depth of about 20 p, the measurements can be made while the specimen is under load. The value of the dislocation density obtained by the X-ray method is also subject to errors, which are different from those of the electron microscope. Though a considerably larger volume of material is sampled by the X-rays, thereby reducing some of the statistical errors inherent in the electron microscope data, the information obtained is less detailed and is dependent on the method of analysis used to obtain a value for the dislocation density. Nevertheless, important observations can be made because the aforementioned advantages outweigh some of the limitations. In the present paper the X-ray method is briefly described and applied to a brass specimens deformed in tension. The results are then discussed in terms of some of the current concepts of work hardening. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Details have already been extensively published elsewhere11-14 and therefore will only be dealt with briefly here. 1.1) Materials and Specimen Preparation.
