The wear behavior of metal matrix composites differs from that of the monolithic metallic counterparts because composite materials have multiple constituents in their structures and these constituents wear at different rates. It was observed that under low wear stresses, abrasive wear prevailed. As the wear stress increases, pullout of reinforcement occurs and both abrasive wear and wear due to pullout contribute to the overall composite wear. A model of wear taking into account both types of wear has been developed. A critical pullout wear stress was suggested for each composite. Below the critical wear stress, no pullout of reinforcement occurs. It turns out that the critical wear stress simply equals to the ratio of the interfacial strength between the matrix and the reinforcement to the friction coefficient between the reinforcement and the wear counter surface. The critical wear stress is independent of the particle size of the reinforcement. From data on wear of 53% WC composites, the equation of wear for 32% WC composites was obtained. Experimental results agreed well with the predicted wear rate of this composites. This provides an excellent verification of the wear model developed by Lin and Deshpande. Wear data from Modi et al. in the literature were also perfectly fitted with the model.

In recent years, as the price of oil soars upward, scientists have started to focus on other energy sources, such as hydrogen. As magnesium can be used for hydrogen storage by forming MgH2, industry will see a growing demand for the hydride. In hydrogen storage and release cycles using magnesium, hydrogen is released from magnesium hydride through hydrolysis and magnesium hydroxide is produced. Therefore, recycling magnesium hydroxide back to magnesium becomes important. The solid oxide membrane (SOM) process is an emerging technology for this process. In the SOM process, MgF2-CaF2-MgO flux is contained in a stainless steel crucible, which works as the cathode. An ionic-conducting YSZ membrane, connected to a liquid metal anode, is partially immersed in the flux. During electrolysis, when the voltage between anode and cathode is higher than the dissociation potential of magnesium oxide, magnesium ions move toward the cathode and are reduced into magnesium vapor. The oxygen ions move toward the anode, passing through the YSZ membrane. They are then oxidized, forming pure oxygen, CO/CO2 or steam (by reaction with hydrogen). The magnesium vapor, generated at the cathode, is collected in the condenser as high purity magnesium. SOM experiments have been conducted with different liquid metal anodes and without reductants. The SOM technique is a highly energy efficient process and with by-products being oxygen or steam, it is also an environmentally friendly green process. A 2-D electrostatics mathematical model was developed as an initial step towards optimizing the design for a three-tube scale-up SOM electrolysis cell. Several possible geometries were examined to develop the scale-up model and convergence of the model was achieved.

Covellite resulting from an original 0.5 % Cu(tot) chalcocite ore has been leached in columns at different temperatures, in the lower range of 10 - 20 °C, under acid - ferric bacterial leaching conditions. Dissolution of copper from covellite depends on the rate and extent of sulphide oxidation by ferric ion. While it is recognised that the dissolution of sulphide minerals is electrochemical in nature, an apparent chemically controlled dissolution pattern was measured with activation energy of 78.09 kJ/mol (18.66 kcal/mol). Ferric iron is the main oxidant and its production and availability will depend on the bacterial activity developed in the system. This activity is characterised by the population size and by the specific oxidation rate of the bacteria. Bacterial growth was followed directly by the number of bacteria appearing in the column effluent solutions and indirectly by the generation of ferric iron or by the total oxidation observed in the columns. These results have been interpreted by using the heap oxidative capacity parameter, which indicates an equivalent ferric production of about 0.07 - 0.15 kg Fe +3/t/day at 20°C. Although bacterial activity decreases to about 0.03 kg Fe +3/t/day with decreasing temperature, a significant bacterial oxidation is still observed at 10 °C. However, extended lag times are observed, which delay the start of bacterial growth to times concurring with covellite leaching. Under these conditions, bacterial activity is displayed through a population controlled by the rate at which- ferrous iron is released from the reducing covellite surface. These results suggest the potential benefit of including some kind of inoculation when operating at lower temperatures. Also, heat loss control and/or heat addition to the heaps should be considered during process design and operation of ferric bacterial heap leaching of secondary copper sulphide ores at temperatures lower than 20°C.

Laboratory trials were performed in an induction furnace to study droplet formation during lance blowing. Compressed air was blown on a molten iron bath consisting of iron alloyed with carbon and silicon. Steel droplets were collected using a specially designed sampler. The average steel droplet composition and the oxide layer thickness were determined using scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersed spectroscopy. In addition, the concentration gradient of elements was determined using a microprobe. It should be noted that a special technique had to be developed in order to prepare the droplet sample. The size distribution and composition of the droplets was also determined using the microprobe. It was found that the carbon content in the droplets was lower than the carbon content in the bulk.

The Brockman rare-metals and rare earth resource is located within volcanic and volcanogenic sediments of the later Proterozoic Halls Creek Group in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. Exploration including surface trenching, percussion and diamond drilling has defined a major resource of rare-metals and heavy rare earth elements. The host&apos; is a steeply dipping ash-flow tuff, described informally as the Niobium Tuff, enriched in zirconium, hafnium, yttrium, niobium, tantalum, rare earth elements, gallium and beryllium. The mineralization is fine- grained (<20 micrometres) and is the result of alteration and re- mobilization of comparatively simple precursor minerals such as columbite and zircon by fluorine-rich deuteric solutions that were retained in the tuff following eruption. The ultra fine-grained structure of the tuff precludes mineral liberation and separation by physical methods. However, values can be converted to water soluble sulphates by reacting with concentrated sulphuric acid at 250°C. The solution containing aluminium, niobium, tantalum, zirconium, hafnium, yttrium, rare earths and gallium can then be processed to pure products in a sequence of solvent extraction and ion-exchange steps. As a result of these processing techniques, the commercial products obtainable from the resource include mixed rare earth and yttrium concentrates, zirconium-hafnium concentrate, niobium-tantalum concentrate and ceramic grade alumina. Further separation could result in high purity products suitable for ceramic and electronic applications.

Mineralogical studies were carried out on nodulated copper cathodes from three primary refineries to characterize the nodular growths and to elucidate the causes of the nodulation. Nodulation is often initiated at the surface of the starter sheet or the stainless steel plating blank, although a layer of smooth copper sometimes is deposited before nodulation commences. In some instances, the "roots" of the nodules exhibit a pronounced dendritic texture that is associated with an abundance of cavities. Slimes particles are not usually associated with these growth features which lead to a globular surface deposit. The globules sometimes develop into larger nodules, and this type of nodulation is likely caused by improper addition agent concentrations. The nodules on most cathodes, however, exhibit "roots" at the contact with the substrate that are associated with microcavities and large clusters (>40 µm) of slimes particles. The slimes constituents are commonly Ag powder, PbSO4 and Cu2(Se,Te) but not AgCu(Se,Te) or Ag,(Se,Te). The size of the slimes clusters, rather than their composition, appears to be the important factor causing the copper to grow into nodules. Tiny individual slimes particles themselves do not appear to cause cathode nodulation.

"Atlantic Copper is one of the largest copper producers in Europe. Its production facilities, including a primary copper smelter and an electrolytic refinery, are located in Huelva, on the southwest coast of Spain. These installations enable the smelting of over 1 million tpy concentrates to produce up to 260,000 tons per year of cathodes and 900 ktpy of sulphuric acid.Since 1970, several improvements have been made at the Converters Area such as modifications of primary hoods, operations with an OPC system, installation of scrap chargers, the recent installation of the secondary hoods and other environmental projects. All these modifications have been aimed at increasing the capacity of our smelter while keeping our continuous environmental commitment.This paper describes the modifications and improvements carried out at the converters area and our proposals for future developments."

It covers the scientific fields, processing routes and investigation techniques in which Prof. Sohn has worked during his career and is based in the equally important three topical areas: Principles, Technologies, and Industrial practice. Professor Sohn was General Chair of the very first TMS Fall Extraction and Processing Symposium in 1983 in San Francisco which led to the Annual such symposia as this International symposium. Furthermore, the theme of that symposium was sulfide smelting, which is also included in this symposium. [ ] Professor Sohn was born in a beautiful dynastic capital Kaesung, Korea on August 21, 1941. He received his B.S. degree in 1962 from Seoul National University, M.Sc. in 1966 from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, N.B., Canada, and his Ph.D. degree in 1970 from theUniversity of California at Berkeley all in Chemical Engineering. After working as a Research Associate at the State University of New York at Buffalo and as a Research Engineer at Du Pont?s Engineering Technology Laboratory, Dr. Sohn joined the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Utah in 1974 and currently holds the ranks of Professor of Metallurgical Engineering and Adjunct Professor of Chemical Engineering.

Effect of four polyols, namely ethylene glycol (EGL), glycerol (GCL), propanediol (PDL), butanediol (BDL) and three organic acids, namely oxalic acid (OA), malonic acid (MA) and succinic acid (SA) on the current efficiency (CE) and the cell voltage during zinc electrowinning was studied. Galvanostatic polarization was conducted in a supporting electrolyte (SE) containing 180 g dm-³ H2SO4, 60 g dm-³ Zn2+ and 8 g dm-³ Mn2+ at 38°C with magnetic stirring. The imposed current density was 50 mA cm-². The anodes were made of a Pb-Ag alloy and the cathodes were made of an aluminum alloy. The results showed that all the polyols tested in this study decreased the current efficiency and the cell voltage, but the decrease of the cell voltage was not important. Oxalic and succinic acids decreased the current efficiency to a less extent than the polyols, but did not decrease the cell voltage much. The only compound that increased the current efficiency was malonic acid, and its capacity of decreasing the cell voltage was the highest within the seven tested organic compounds.

Hydrometallurgical zinc recovery from EAF dust has several advantages compared to pyrometallurgical alternatives in terms of low temperature operation, lower energy consumption and higher flexibility. Many hydrometallurgical processes have been suggested and tested over the years without success. The main reasons are: -Low leaching yield of zinc due to the fact that a high fraction of ZnO in the EAF dust exists in the zinc ferrite structure which makes selective leaching of ZnO not possible -Many of the proposals could not handle the halide in the EAF dust To eliminate these two disadvantages, two zinc ferrite elimination concepts have been tested and developed in the REZIN project of the EU 5th Framework Programme. The two concepts for zinc ferrite elimination could be shortly described by the following chemical reactions: A. ZnOFe2O3 + 2CaO = Ca2Fe2O5 + ZnOfree B. ZnOFe2O3 + C = Femet + CO/CO2 + ZnOfree These two concepts were investigated in details in combination with a subsequent leaching step using the novel EZINC process for recovery of zinc from EAF dust. Leaching of pretreated samples has shown great increases of a zinc recovery yield. A zinc recovery of over 90 % could be reached, as compared to about 50 % for no-pretreated samples. This paper will describe the two concepts in details.

EU legislation imposes ambitious recycling targets for various consumer goods. End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs), scrap iron and various proportions of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) are processed by shredding plants which recover most of the metals but produce Shredder Residues (SR) which are landfilled. They represent 20 to 25 wt.% of the shredder input. Energy issues for the coarse fraction of SR are now largely studied. However, below 2 mm, the calorific value falls off drastically. These Fine Shredder Residues (FSR) represent up to 55 wt.% of the total SR. To meet European objectives other alternatives to landfilling must be considered for the FSR. The present paper describes a study carried out to characterise the FSR and investigates ways to process them and produce marketable products. Applying Gy&apos;s theory, a sampling procedure was conducted over two years to statistically quantify the variability of the physical and chemical properties of FSR produced by a Belgian post-shredding treatment plant. Macroscopic characterisation has led to the identification of four material categories which could be separated according to their physical properties: ferrous metals (more or less oxidised), non-ferrous metals, an organic fraction (plastics, rubber, textiles, foams, wood) and a minerals fraction (glass, ceramic, concrete). The entrainment of small metallic particles within the pores of organic fragments will affect the quality of the separations.

A high-power sound which can transmit through any continuous elastic medium with less attenuation, particularly in liquid allows us to externally control the system of concern by using the acoustic radiation force or the cavitation phenomena. These functions may eliminate gravitational and/or atmospheric constraints which are often encountered in conventional operations for producing clean and advanced materials. This paper outlines the recent development in the field of sonoprocessing of materials. Cold model experiments in some vessels have been performed to simulate ultrasonic operations such as inclusion removal from liquid, degassing of melt, emulsification of two liquid phases, solidification processing, and decomposition of chemical species in waste water. High speed visual imaging is carried out for better understanding of the cavitation phenomena as well as the followed microjets during the processing. The radiation force acting on fine suspending objects in a fluid can be utilized for eliminating or rearranging/orienting the objects in the fluid. Acoustically induced cavitation phenomena in liquid can be utilized as an effective dynamic means to control interfacial phenomena as well as micro- and macro-mixing of liquid. Sonochemical and thermal effects in cavitation multi-bubble can be also useful in a waste water treatment.

Selenium, which is a 6A group element of the periodic table, constitutes about 7x10-5 % of the earth?s crust. Even though selenium is a dispersed element with respect to its commercial exploitation, it is capable of forming number of minerals and nearly forty selenium minerals have been identified, out of which the copper ores are the richest sources of selenium. Electronics industries and glass industries are the major consumers of selenium, while pharma grade selenium used as micronutrient for humans and animals. Various methods have been developed to recover selenium as a by-product from copper anode slime during copper refining. Selenium being amphoteric in nature, it is soluble in both acid and alkali. While acid roast process is widely used, considerable work has been carried out in Russia for recovering selenium through alkali route. This paper enlightens the process developed at Central Research and Development Laboratory, for recovering selenium from decopperised slime through alkali pressure leaching. The decopperised slime is pressure leached with alkali under oxidizing conditions by which almost all the selenium present is converted to alkali selenate, which is easily separable from the rest of the decopperised slime. The solution so obtained is neutralized, during which, most of the impurities are precipitated out. Then selenium is precipitated in its elemental form upon purging sulphur-di-oxide under warm acidic medium. The purity of the selenium obtained by this process is higher than that of the selenium from acid roast process. Moreover selenium can be crystallized as sodium selenate and it can be marketed. The acidic content of the effluent is recovered and it is recycled back to the process. The sodium content of the effluent is converted into high purity sodium sulphate, which is marketable. The hazardous waste containing arsenic is precipitated as its sulphide and can be disposed off as landfill.

"Furnace resistance is a function of the complex interrelationship between many factors including: operating practice, slag conductivity, temperature, power intensity, and geometry (electrode shape, diameter, spacing, immersion, slag depth, etc.).Accurate prediction of resistance is critical for success of the overall furnace design. The sizing of electrodes, columns, bus-bars, and transformers are all impacted. Estimation of minimum and maximum resistance or maximum operational current, as well as the maximum operating voltage are of fundamental importance.Various mathematical tools have been developed to assist designers with the selection of furnace dimensions and the prediction of resistance. Elkem found the methods of Downing and Urban 1965 and Westly 1975, to be particularly useful.In the current paper, comparisons are drawn between data from spent aluminum pot lining (SPL) demonstration testing at Elkem Bjolvefossen and predictions based on these classical tools and 3D finite element modeling (FEM) with COMSOL.®"

The lateritic nickel ore sample subjected to this experimental study was taken from Çalda ore deposit (Turkey) and contains 1.43% Ni and 0.105% Co. Mineralogical investigations showed that the ore sample contains asbolane, chromite, limonite, hematite, goethite, lepidocrocite, magnetite, serpentine, and clay type minerals together with chalcedon, quartz, calcite, and chlorite. In the acidic leaching experiments, the effects of temperature, acid (H2SO4) concentration, and leaching time on nickel leaching recoveries were investigated. Leaching recovery versus time curves showed a parabolic trend and increasing the temperature shifted that curves to the higher values. The dissolution of nickel from lateritic ore can be explained by a shrinking core model and the apparent activation energy was found as 47.34 kJ/mol in the range given by the literature. The highest Ni and Co leaching efficiencies as 90.2% and 96.8% respectively were obtained at 80°C temperature, 200 g/L H2SO4 concentration, and 8 hours of leaching time.

"During excavations of submerged arc furnaces producing silicomanganese, silicon carbide (SiC) has been found. Contributing to the size of the inactive area of the furnace, the active area of the furnace where reactions occur will decrease, thus reducing the potential for pre-reduction in the furnace.This work studied the formation of SiC from the liquid-solid reaction between slag, metal, and metallurgical coke. Slags and metals with different levels of silica (S1O2) and silicon (Si) have been studied. The slag and metal has been heated together with coke, and the samples investigated by microprobe. The results show that SiC was formed on the coke particle through reactions with both slag and metal. For the metal, the carbon most likely diffused through the SiC to react with Si in the alloy. SiC formation with slag is likely to go through the reduction of Si02 to Si.IntroductionToday, Silicomanganese (SiMn) is produced in submerged arc furnaces (SAF) by reduction of S1O2 and manganese oxides, mainly with metallurgical cokes. Typically, the tapped metal has a silicon content of 17 - 20 wt.%. To achieve higher levels of Si, the metal can be refined by adding off-grade silicon metal, yielding low carbon SiMn. [1]. What is believed to be SiC that has been found during dig-outs of SiMn furnaces producing high silicon alloy. It is possible that excess amounts of SiC in the furnace cause operational problems, since SiC will occupy furnace volume. As SiC accumulates, the active volume of the furnace will decrease, increasing the flow of material and gas in the active areas of the furnace. Formation of SiC is inevitable, so it is desired to keep the formation as low as possible. To be able to control the formation of SiC, one has to understand the basic mechanisms."

"Electric field emission properties from CVD diamond fabricated using pulse-modulated microwave plasma CVD were studied. Diamond was synthesized by microwave plasma CVD apparatus equipped with a pulse-modulated microwave power supply. Pulse conditions were varied from 1 to 10 seconds for pulse periods and from 0.1 to lHz for pulse frequency either. Surface morphologies of the deposits were differed by pulse frequency and duty cycle. As a result, FE properties prepared by different pulse duty cycle were different from continuous film which synthesized using continuous microwave significantly. Highest current density was obtained from the uneven morphology diamond film prepared at 17.5% pulse duty cycle.FE properties of the CVD diamond were depended on surface morphologies that related to the pulse conditions.1. IntroductionDiamond has excellent physical and chemical properties as an industrial material. Especially, hydrogen terminated diamond had the negative electron affinity (NEA) 1) and CVD diamond has this NEA property either as deposited 2). So the electron emission source to the FED is expected as one of this application of CVD diamond as cold cathode of electric devices. We studied on FE properties of various CVD diamond, pulse microwave plasma CVD diamond showed better property than those of other CVD diamond 3).This report studied on· the effect of the duty-cycle of pulse modulate microwave condition on FE properties of the diamond fabricated by pulse modulated microwave plasma CVD."

"2-substituted benzimidazole-zinc and 2-substituted benzimidazole-copper complexes were main components of organic solderability preservative (OSP) in PCB producing process and affect the thermal stability of OSP film. So these four complexes were prepared by 2-substitutedbenzimidazole reacting with zinc ion and copper ion, the complexes crystals were determined by IR, its thermal stabilities were studied by TG method. The results indicated that the thermal stability of 2-substituted benzimidazole-zinc is higher than the 2-substituted benzimidazole copper,and the thermal decomposition mechanism was presentedIntroductionImidazole compounds which is an important heterocyclic compound shows the important value and outstanding prospects[I-3l in field of biological engineering, medicine, and high-performance composites. It's said that imidazole compounds is an excellent new metal surface treatment[4] agent, because it has good reaction activity with metals and can form a chemical layer on the metal surface. The complexes of imidazole were main components of organic solderability preservative (OSP) in PCB producing process and affect the thermal stability of OSP film. The mechanism of imodazole combined with metal and film deposited has been reported, but the opinions about thermal stability of film have bifurcation, let alone the thermal decomposition mechanism of film at high temperature. The complexes were prepared by combining of 2- substituted-benzimidazole with zinc and copper iron, which were studied by IR and TG method, in order to get thermal stability of different complexes."

Equipment and continuous casting technology for the production of small diameter copper rods and tubes are described. Industrial copper wastes, such as scrap and shavings, were used as the charge. An electron-beam installation for rod and tube production includes a crucible with an electromagnetic stirring system and a pouring hole in its bottom, a bottomless mold, .and a special cooling system, which includes an oil and water cooling devices. For the first time in the electron-beam technology, rods of 8 mm and 14 mm diameter mm tubes of 14 mm external diameter and 7 mm internal diameter were produced through continuous casting by pulling them out of the vacuum chamder into the atmosphere with depressurizing the vacuum chamber. The production capacity of a single strand continuous casting machine was 200 mm/tnin for rod casting and 150 mm/min for tube casting.
