The Cliffs and Associates Limited (CAL) 500,000 tpy HBI plant located in Trinidad was commissioned after modifications in early 2001. This plant employs the novel Lurgi Circored® process to reduce iron ore fines using a combination of circulating fluidized bed and conventional fluidized bed reactors in a hydrogen based. This paper will review the advantages offered by working in the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, the Circored® processes, and plant start-up experience.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Block caving is a distinct caving method applied mostly to large, massive, ore bodies because of its in¬herent low cost and high production capabilities. Areas of sufficient size are removed by undercutting so that the mass above will cave naturally. Drawing of the caved ore at the bottom of the ore column causes the caving action to continue upward until all of the ore above the undercut level is broken into sizes suitable for handling. When properly applied, block caving results in a lower mining cost per ton than any other under¬ground method. There are three distinct forms: (1) dividing the horizontal area into rectangular or preferably square or nearly square blocks, drawing evenly over the entire area to maintain an approximately horizontal plane of con¬tact between broken ore and caved capping; (2) divid¬ing the horizontal area into panels across the ore body, retreating by undercutting manageable areas from one end of the panel to the other and maintaining an in¬clined plane of contact between the broken ore and caved capping (thus the name panel caving); and (3) no division of horizontal area of the ore body into defi¬nite blocks or panels (this is termed mass caving). Undercutting may be from wall to wall, retreating from one end of the ore body to the other, maintaining an inclined plane of contact between the broken ore and caved capping. The total active caved area is deter¬mined by the size of block that will not produce undue stress on workings below the undercutting level and by total production requirements. This type of operation is also referred to as panel caving at some properties. SUITABLE ORE BODIES Block caving in its various forms is applicable to deposits of various shapes and ores of various strengths. Its success is governed by rigid requirements and limi¬tations. In unsuitable deposits or where improperly em¬ployed, the loss of ore may exceed that of any other mining method. Good planning, systematic work pro¬cedures, careful supervision, and good judgment con¬tribute to its success. Ore Characteristics Included as a necessary characteristic in an ore body suited to a successful block-caving operation is a proper fracture pattern. Ore hardness should be another gov¬erning factor, and the toughness or softness of the ore should be considered. There must be sufficient horizon¬tal area available for expansion of the undercut, if neces¬sary, to start the caving process. Large, massive, ore bodies usually meet these conditions. Veinlike deposits must be wide and dip rather steeply to conform to the block-caving limitations. The capping must be of such a nature as to cave when the underlying ore is being removed since the weight of the overburden aids in crushing the ore. The most favorable capping character¬istic is that it breaks into coarse pieces and resists attrition as the block is drawn. Soft capping, by breaking into fine pieces and sifting into the ore or channeling through the ore to the drawpoints, can seriously dilute the ore and hinder the extraction of clean ore from the blocks. Types of Ore In block caving, a fairly uniform distribution of val¬ues in the ore is necessary. Grade values may range from low grade to high grade, but most often the sys¬tem is applied to low-grade ores. Wide veins, thick beds, or massive deposits of homogeneous ore overlain by ground which will cave constitute suitable ore bodies. The ore must be such that it can be supported while blocks are being developed and undercut but breaks up readily when caved. Some applications include porphyry copper, disseminated molybdenite, hematite in the Lake Superior iron district, limonite deposits in northern Spain, the diamond mines of South Africa, asbestos and nickel in Canada, and massive magnetite in Pennsylvania. Size and Shape Outline of the ore body should be fairly regular, and the sides of the ore body should dip steeply. It may not be economical to mine small portions of ore extending into the walls of the deposit, and low-grade inclusions in the ore cannot be left unmined. Some dilution of the ore, as mining progresses, by low-grade or barren cap¬ping is inevitable and, unavoidably, some clean ore is left between drawpoints. Determining Cavability The use of rock mechanics is sometimes advantageous in helping to determine the cavability of an ore deposit. The US Bureau of Mines has information and testing ability which can assist in determining the cavability of ore types. Several competent consulting orga¬nizations knowledgeable in rock mechanics can also as¬sist in evaluating the cavability of an ore body. Some recent work has been done to better define the cavability index of various ore bodies; an example of how this was determined is discussed by McMahon and Kendrick (1969). The intensity of the fracture pattern is a critical parameter to be analyzed. The question to be answered is, "How intense must the fracture pattern be?" Table 1 is a tabulation of the size of rock fragments that appear at the drawpoint of various block-cave mines around the world. These are indicative of the fracture-pattern spac¬ing and, as can be seen, they vary substantially from the almost sandy material at the Mather mine to fairly sizable blocks at the Grace mine. Several sets of fractures are essential to promote good caving. Ideally, two vertical sets at nearly right angles to each other and a third set nearly horizontal are required to insure a good caving ore body. The Pyrometallurgical refining stage of ferronickel manufacturing produces a slag rich in iron and nickel, which is usually further processed for metal recovery. The recovered material is returned to the refining or smelting stages, depending on the amount of impurities. A series of tests was carried out on the Mineração Morro Azul refining slags, aiming at the recovery of the metallic particles through physical processing. Minor changes in the process showed improved results. This paper compares the textures of these slags after being cooled at ambient temperature and granulated under water at high pressure and flow. It concludes that the cooling process is intimately connected to the work index of such slags, thus resulting in direct impact in operating costs.

Advances in inexpensive computer automation led to the development and use of a computerized ore control system at the Cyprus Copperstone Gold Mine near Parker, AZ. These new ore control practices improved accuracy, performance and productivity of the ore control effort. An automated system for data collection, including bar coding of blasthole samples, laboratory analysis, data management, grade estimation, cut delineation and ore zone stake out, plays a major role in ore control practices. This is of particular interest because of the large amount of blasthole information being processed, analyzed and reported daily. Copperstone Gold management has been progressive toward new, efficient methods regarding ore reserve estimation, long-term mine planning, short-term mine planning, ore control and surveying. Technological advances, including powerful personal computers, applicable mine planning software and surveying instrumentation, have become readily available and affordable. The computerized ore control procedures used at Copperstone include sample data collection, laboratory automation and computerized data management. These have reduced the time to complete ore control on a blast pattern by 50% to 75%. The final product - ore control - is generated in a more timely and accurate manner.

This report describes Koppelman's work to develop the K-Fuel® Series C Process used to dry and stabilize Powder River Basin coal. It also contains summaries of the results of bench-scale and pilot plant tests conducted to prove the Series C Process. The process is being used by the KFx-Thermo Ecotek partnership for a 500,000 ton per year commercial plant that has been constructed near Gillette, Wyoming. The plant is presently undergoing shakedown.

And they are willing to spend the necessary funds on those systems, provided they are affordable, environ-mentally friendly and sustainable. From June 20-23, professionals in the tunneling and underground construction industry from around the world gathered in Portland, OR to learn new ways of providing those systems using the latest technology available. The North American Tunneling (NAT) conference attracted 803 attendees and 108 exhibiting suppliers of equipment and services.

Increased TBM performance is leading the way for resurgence in tunneling activity in NYC. Tunnels will be excavated in the same geologic formations as previously excavated D&B tunnels whose construction records are providing valuable insight into the prediction of rock mass behavior. This report compares an eight mile stretch of NYC Water Tunnel #2 with the recently excavated eleven mile stretch of the TBM driven Water Tunnel #3. Comparisons of the type and amount of rock support installed as well as water inflows and grout quantities are made. Rock mass characteristics specific to TBM performance are also evaluated.

The 32nd annual short course ?Grouting Fundamentals and Current Practice? was held at the Colorado School of Mines, June 13-17, 2011. The field demonstration portion of the course was conducted June 16 at Baski Inc.?s yard in Denver, CO. The full-scale field demonstration presents many types of drilling and grouting equipment in operation as well as numerous grouting methods per-formed under various field conditions. As part of the field demonstration, the class was shown the proportioning, mixing, testing and injection of various cement grout mixes into sand columns under controlled and recorded conditions. These sand column demonstrations have been conducted under controlled and measured conditions each year since 1999 as part of the short course. The sand column demonstrations were conducted prior to 1999, but with less quality control and minimal record keeping of the proportioning, mixing, testing, injection pressures and the final permeation results.

An increase in the importance of low-grade materials as sources of gold and silver has led to the need for improved analytical methods on leach solutions, ores and various effluents, residues, and in-process streams. These are required by plant operators as guides to process control and for accounting pldrposes. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and AAS preceded by pre- concentration have been applied successfully to resolve many such problems. However, AAS is no panacea and imprecision or loss of accuracy can result if adequate precautions are not taken to prevent losses and eliminate interferences. The recent methods are discussed together with methods for overcoming difficulties. Comparisons with more classical analytical techniques are also given.

The two candidates in the upcoming presidential election in the United States each say that they have their own solution to the nation?s energy problems - solutions that will increase the amount of energy available, lessen the nation?s dependence on foreign sources and reduce the amount of pollution released to the atmosphere. Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama and Republican candidate Sen. John McCain both advocate research funding for coal-to-liquids and clean coal technologies. McCain also supports increased oil and gas drilling offshore. And Obama has even made some noises in that direction, although his plan leans heavily on the increased use of renewable energy sources. The energy debate is not new to this election. Congress and whichever party is in the White House has for years been trying to craft a comprehensive energy policy. One difference in this latest debate is that the increased use of nuclear energy has gained more attention. Current President George W. Bush has said he favors the increased use of nuclear power as part of the nation?s energy package. And McCain said he supports the building of more nuclear power plants. Obama has not said much about that. The American public is also showing signs of changing its stance on nuclear energy. To be sure, images of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl are still alive in some minds. However, the American public has said it wants cheaper energy and they want it produced more cleanly. With nuclear, the nation can have both. In the United States, nuclear accounts for slightly less than 20 percent of the electrical power used (see interview with Gary Steele of Energy Fuels on page 27). Globally, that figure is about 15 percent. And there are several nations that derive better than half of their power from nuclear sources. Add to that the world?s increasing need for more energy and the future of nuclear is bright.

INTRODUCTION Underground blasting with perimeter damage control can reduce the requirement for loose rock scaling and reduce the risk of ground-fall injury. In previous work Johnson and associates (2010) from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a rock blasting perimeter damage and control design method included in the DRIFT software tool (NIOSH, 2018). This blast design software tool utilizes current methods of perimeter blasting with the added design element of a buffer row coordinated with the perimeter row to reduce perimeter damage. The coordination is in applying one of several blast damage models to calculate the damage extent for each production, buffer, and perimeter blast hole in the design. The calculated damage is then applied to the spacing between the blast holes. The basis of the buffer row design is the practical damage limit and is supported in this paper with computer models of signature blasts and full blast rounds using PFC2D (Itasca Consulting Group, Inc., 2018). Practical damage limit The practical damage radius (Rd) is not to be confused with burden. The practical damage extends toward the burden side and inward into the rock mass. For all practical purposes, the practical damage radius equals one half the burden (Hustrulid, 1999). The maximum extent of radial crack damage around a blast hole (Rcrack) and the maximum extent of radial crushing damage (Rcrush) are illustrated in Figure 1. A “practical” radius of damage (Rd) lies between the crushing limit and the cracking limit. The “practical” damage means that if the rock mass lying outside of the practical damage circle were removed, the rock remaining within the circle would easily break apart. Blast pressure and strain Work by Johnson (2010) and associates included signature blast tests in large concrete blocks. A signature blast test in concrete as exampled by strain data in Figure 2 was designed to monitor the dynamic strain at incremental distances from a single fully coupled blast hole, measure crushing and radial cracking extent by wire-sawing to expose the damage, and relate the damage to overbreak that is common in underground blasting. The initial slope or rising strain as the stress wave passes by the strain gages shows very high strain and strain rates close to the single blast hole. Since the derivative of strain versus time is strain rate, a line tangent to each of the strain curves at the maximum strain rate is drawn and the strain rates identified. The high strain rates were then plotted on a semi-log in Figure 3 to show a linear trend. The strain rate is greater than 100 s-1 within 20 cm from the blast hole for the signature blast experiment. The strain rate at the blast hole wall is projected to be 300 s-1. Figure 4 illustrates the damage in the NIOSH block exposed by a wire saw cut.

This is a new era for the minerals industry. Never before has there been more need for effective communication. So said Robert Anderson, chairman and chief executive officer of Hanna Mining Co. He was speaking to the American Mining Congress's Communication Workshop. The question is whether there is enough industry concern to meet the challenge. Anderson observed that increased workshop attendance, in continuing tough times, reflects the industry's concern for communication. But, why were students, faculty, engineers, supervisors, and managers not at the conference? Communication applies to every manager, Anderson said. But he was the only operating manager present. And only one company sent operating supervisors. The remaining conference participants were public relations personnel, generally with nonmining backgrounds. And the program dealt mostly with public relations issues. Role of Communication in the Minerals Industry. It is well known that the minerals industry faces economic, political, and social problems. Economic shifts and foreign competition have created an international minerals industry and an international marketplace. This, in turn, calls for worldwide communication. Other factors effecting communication are: • Governmental protectionism as well as regulatory reforms call for increased interaction with governing officials. • Changing social values have created environmental issues and anti-industry attitudes. This intensifies the need for improved public relations. • Traditional work values are shifting towards self-actualization and humanistic movements. The work force is better educated and more informed. Employees demand more satisfaction, equality, and job autonomy. • The mining industry's task of managing its human resources is complicated by layoffs, job uncertainties, and bleak outlooks concerning employee morale and motivation. Technology and Information for a New Era As noted, this is a new communications era, one propelled by technology and information. Technology has led to reduced demand for raw materials by developing substitutes. Copper demand, for example, will never fully recover. Copper cables are replaced by fiberoptics; copper transmission lines, with aluminum. Technology has shifted the US from traditional to high tech and service industries. The speed, frequency, and scope of information transmission have greatly increased. But the most significant characteristic of this information is not the pace of advancing technology. It is the dramatic increase in the importance and frequency of our personal transactions. Knowledge has replaced raw materials and capital as the strategic resource. Information has replaced energy as the transforming resource. And the game against nature has become an interpersonal game (D. Bell, Post-industrial society, Physics Today, '76). In Megatrends, John Naisbitt says that information will soon double every 20 months. So, professionals will become "information workers." And communication will be the life channel of the information age. Thomas Wolfe said you can't go home again. Hanna Anderson said we are, indeed, facing a new day. It will never again be "business as usual." We must move into the information age with the rest of society. We cannot trust that the world will continue to rely on our products. Nor can we place the responsibility and control for problems and solutions outside the minerals industry. Improved communication is not a panacea. But, Anderson said, it is critical to the minerals industry. What is Communication? The word communication is overused. It is applied to every aspect of our lives. Satirist Tom Lehrer got sick of hearing about the need to communicate. He said, "It seems to me that if someone is having all that trouble communicating, the very least he can do is shut up!" Obviously, we cannot follow that advice (though we might wish that some others would do so). Communication is always going on. It is inevitable. Yet we have many misconceptions about com-

High Pressure Water Jet Assisted Tunneling The high pressure water jet assisted tunneling project was conducted in a granite quarry near Skykomish, Washington, approximately 90 miles east of Seattle. A 7-ft diam tunnel boring machine was modified and equipped with high pressure water jets. The concept that tunneling rates can be improved by using high pressure water jets was validated, with an average increased advance rate of 50% to 60%. For some tests, the advance rate was more than doubled. A comprehensive economic analysis has shown that very significant savings are possible. At a 50% increase in advance rate, cost savings of 14% and 24% were projected for 10-ft and 20-ft diam tunnels respectively. These benefits were seen to be relatively insensitive to water jet equipment costs.

INTRODUCTION A 100 ft long, 20 ft high and 18 ft wide NATM tunnel was excavated through grouted clean sands beneath a busy city street, including a variety of existing utility lines. The new tunnel associated with a hospital expansion will serve as a pedestrian tunnel connecting a parking structure with a new hospital facility. Tunnel construction started on December 15, 2005 when drilling for the grouting program started and was completed on May 26, 2006 when the tunnel final lining was completed. The tunnel was constructed by Kiewit Construction Company as a tunnel subcontractor to The Christman Company who is constructing the hospital facility for Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan. URS was the project designer. GallZeidler Consultants, LLC were the contractor’s NATM consultant. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Michigan Street Pedestrian Tunnel is a component of the Michigan Street Development located along the north side of Michigan Street NE between Coit Avenue NE and North Division Avenue in the downtown area of the Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Michigan Street Development includes a parking deck and four new towers to be constructed over the proposed parking deck. The tower planned furthest east is being developed by Spectrum Health as the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavillion. The purpose of the pedestrian tunnel is to connect the proposed Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavillion with the future Spectrum building to be located on the south side of Michigan Street NE. The southern end of the tunnel was constructed with a bulkhead until the future Spectrum building is constructed at which time interconnection will be required. The tunnel site plan and profile are shown in Figure 1, Site Plan, and Figure 2, Tunnel Profile. Several challenges were faced during the design and construction of the Michigan Street Pedestrian Tunnel. These challenges included compressed design and construction schedule, maintenance of traffic and protection of old underground utilities. The tunnel was being constructed as part of the Michigan Street Development and coordination with other concurrent construction activities was required. The tunnel was constructed within a specified window of time to allow other associated construction activities to take place without compromising the overall project schedule. The design started in June 2005 and construction was completed by June 2006.

At LKAB's plants in Lappland, Sweden, sintered pellets are manu-factured according to three different industrial processes, viz. shaft furnace at Malmberget, straight-grate at Kiruna and grate-kiln at Svappavaara. At present the total annual capacity amounts to 4.7 million tons. However, since it has been decided to erect a new straight-grate plant (2.5 million tons) at Malmberget, and because of the decision to extend and rebuild the existing plants, it is estimated that the annual capacity will be increased to somewhat over 8 million tons by 1973. The great majority of the pellets produced is exported. They are thus reloaded several times and generally speaking roughly handled, resulting in larger or smaller product losses on arrival at the point of use. It is there-fore of great economical interest to have a good control over the transport strength of the pellets by appropriate quality testing at the point of production. In addition to good transport strength, further demands are ob-viously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The blast furnace burden must maintain a good permeability for the gas. The pellets must thus have a favourable size distribution and must not be so weakened by reduction that they disintegrate under the stresses and clog the blast furnace shaft. Furthermore, the burden must have good reducibility. An increase of the rate of reduction can obviously mean increased blast furnace capacity and reduced coke consumption. In order to optimise the properties of the pellets in these respects, the producer must also be thoroughly familiar with their behaviour during reduction, particularly as the customer's interest in the reduction properties of the pellets' has increased over the last few years. Up to now the only quality demands the customer has made have generally had to do with the cold strength and the screen analysis. Thus a quality control of in addition to good transport strength, further demands are obviously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The identification of the major subsidence areas in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field has been made to distinguish the subsidence phenomena on the basis of geographical location. Further, this identification process is based upon selected critical geological, topographical, and mining features in the coal fields. The proposed identification of the regions is derived from a comparison of the subsidence potential in a particular area. The most likely severe subsidence areas are compared to those with the probable low subsidence severity. The combination of certain geological and mining parameters involved allows for the derivation of a classification of the subsidence potential.

The exploitation of the underground is currently undergoing a major transformation process. Besides mining, alternative ways of utilization are playing an increasingly important role. These alternative utilizations include the storage of gases, the disposal of radioactive wastes and the implementation of geothermal storage facilities. In addition, more and more mining operations are being shut down, like the German hard coal mining industry in 2018. But the integrity of closed mines must be ensured in the post-mining phase.

Rroundtable 2009, a Knight Piésold and Co.-hosted roundtable discussion on mine closure and cover design was held at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV on Feb. 12, 2009. Knight Piésold?s Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce, as well as Knight Piésold representatives Cynthia Parnow and Corey Conrad from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from the Tucson, AZ office were on hand to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to approximately three-dozen attendees from four states. Attendees included personnel from seven mining properties and attendees from corporate offices. The majority of attendees were people directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Other attendees were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus. The purpose of Roundtable 2009 was to exchange ideas and information pertaining to mine closure and cover design associated with almost any aspect of a mining operation. This type of forum provides a less inhibited format for discussion, when compared with traditional conferences and symposia. In the roundtable format, lively discussions are encouraged. This discussion was the fourth in the series of Elko Roundtable events. Previous roundtables pertained to heap leach pad design, construction and operation; design, construction and operation of tailings storage facilities and site-wide water considerations. The ability of companies and countries to mine copper and other mineral commodities competitively and in the process to generate new wealth depends on their mineral endowment. Chile, for example, produces and exports copper because it is well endowed with high-quality, low-cost deposits. This production creates wealth that benefits mining companies and their stockholders, the government, local communities, as well as copper consumers around the world. The widespread perception that mineral endowment must largely determine competitiveness, or what economists call comparative advantage, must be true at any particularly moment. Countries with abundant reserves must be competitive. This follows from the definition of reserves — the quantity of a mineral commodity found in discovered deposits that are profitable to exploit under current conditions. As a result, it is a tautology and not particularly interesting. The important question is what causes reserves to change over time, producing in the process new wealth and shifts in competitiveness?
